Mike has had a 35-year collegiate coaching career, along with national team and Olympic team experience. Great book for coaches who want to be better at what they do By Daniel Tudor Dr. Davenport is a great analyst when it comes to the jobs that any coach does. More specifically, he does a great job of bringing up points that most coaches don't think about as part of their coaching careers. He's a thinker, and the world of youth, high school, and college coaches needs more thinkers.The main "truths" he focuses on in this great ebook are that coaches are not fully prepared for what they need to do, they are under supported, and they are under-appreciated. As I thought about those three truths, it occurred to me that these three reasons are exactly why most coaches leave the profession. That's why I see this book as a little bit of "prevention" for coaches: It's a good shot across the bow of your career to get you focusing on these areas before you beed to in order to better plan for a long, successful and REWARDING career in coaching.There is a section in the book that talks about how modern sports came to be viewed and supported, and the effect on a coach. What is particularly helpful is how Coach Davenport lays out a plan to incorporate this knowledge into your coaching career. It's very practical, down to earth advice.I also felt like his advice and commentary on the importance of developing a daily ritual and "becoming a sponge" - continually learning ALL the aspects of your coaching career (not just the X's and O's).It's a great book for coaches at any stage of their career! I really enjoyed it.

Learning to coach and loving it By Nicole Stimpson The 3 Sinister Truths Of Coaching Sports is a great resource for the young coach just starting out or for the veteran coach who needs a refresher on why the heck they got into coaching all those years ago. I enjoyed Mike's candid approach which makes you feel as if his is in the same room talking to you. He tells you what you need to do, how to do it, and why.Dr. Davenport highlights that successful coaches are just like successful athletes (at any level). Just like strong athletes, being a strong coach requires daily practice, good habits, and discipline in order to succeed.For most, becoming a good coach takes trail and error, hopefully after reading this guide Dr. Davenport will help you eliminate some of the error from your coaching.
