When three generations of Mahoney women converge from various points in the United States to travel together to Newfoundland it’s to trace their roots at the request of the family matriarch, Gran. It should be the trip of a lifetime for this extended family totaling six. Except the youngest member of the entourage, Gwen, starts the journey with knots in her stomach at the thought of spending two weeks with her controlling, disapproving mother, Maude. She isn’t making much of a success of adult life and decides the only safe topics of conversation with her mother are religion and politics. Gwen arrives in Canada armed with guide books, ready to serve as guide. As a perpetual student, research is her strength. Only Gran seems hell-bent on avoiding any notable tourist attractions. It’s like Gran is on a quest of her own, unwilling to reveal her true intent and frustrating her family as she drags them to the Hall of Records and then to every backwater town on the island. Starting from day one, Gwen is intrigued by the handsome stranger who shows up at their every stop along the way. Her connection to him hits her like a physical pain. He’s mysterious, and she can’t get a read on him. At each encounter her impression of him shifts like sands on a beach. Against the backdrop of family dynamics, sibling rivalry, the rules of attraction, and long-buried family secrets, Patrick III is a tale told in the quest story tradition. All the characters are on a quest, though some don’t know it until they actually find what they’ve been looking for.

Patrick III: A Quest Tale, by Patti Sherry-Crews

About the Author Patti Sherry-Crews lives in Evanston, Illinois, a town she is proud to say both sides of her family have lived in for generations. Her first novel, Smoke Damage, is a memoir, which is in part about the experience of raising children in the same town she grew up in in a post 9/11 world. Patti has a BA in anthropology from Grinnell College. A junior year spent at the University of North Wales studying archaeology was a pivotal year for her as she fell in love with the British Isles. After graduating from college she opened an Irish and British Import store for the main purpose of giving her an excuse to go back across the pond. After 15 years she closed the door on that shop when she and her husband decided to increase their family from four to five. Since getting out of retail, Patti has gone back to her day job of caning and rushing chairs, a craft she learned from her mother. She reserves the afternoons for writing. Under the name Cherie Grinnell, she has written a series of steamy romances, which she tongue in cheek calls American chicks hooking up with Brits and Micks. What she tries to do in all her books is to make her characters compelling people who are smart, funny, and who have interesting stories to tell. She also likes to throw in a little armchair travel in her books. Her Selkie Series is set in Dublin and Pairings is in set in Wales. Patrick III is set in Newfoundland.

Romance in Newfoundland By Susan in Houston I really enjoyed this book which the author made more substantial than the usual romance novel with great detail about Newfoundland, a place I have always wanted to visit, and by juxtaposing past history with the present to propel the narrative forward. I had fun discussing aspects of the culture gleaned from the book with a Newfie friend who confirmed their veracity and plans to read the book herself. The author's bio describes her as putting an element of the armchair traveler into all of her books: She definitely succeeds with this one, which made me feel like I was on a weekend jaunt in Newfoundland for a fraction of the cost of the plane ticket I would have had to buy to actually go there!

By LTS68 I really enjoyed this book -- a lighthearted family saga with a bit of romance thrown in for good measure. Loved the quirky characters, humorous family dynamics, the chemistry between the two main characters, and the setting in Newfoundland was very captivating. The connection between the family's search for their ancestors and their present-day adventures makes for an entertaining and engaging read. I look forward to reading more from this author!

The characters are fascinating and the "crazy family" scenes really ring true. There are terrific historic and travelogue elements I really enjoyed and the basic story is fast and fun.

Excerpt from En RouteIt is seldom fair to an author, nor does it raise the value of literature to imagine too readily that a writer is himself depicted in his works. We rob Sir Walter Scott of much of his creative power if we assert that in Redgauntlet are exact portraits of himself and his father, nor is it just criticism to declare that Shakespeare left a likeness of himself in Hamlet. No one can of course create any fictitious character unless he have in himself undeveloped possibilities, some of which he sketches in his books, and, at times, he may have prophesied his own future course in the events under which he has brought the characters in his narrative. It would be intrusive and impertinent to declare that M. Huysmans has written an analysis of himself or a full description of his own conversion under the name of Durtal, because - though it is quite needless for the understanding of "En Route" - Durtal is also the hero of a former book, "La-Bas," wherein experience is made of Satanism, "Black Masses" and other forms of detestable impiety, known in France, and at this moment under investigation in the law courts, but, so far as we are aware, unknown in England.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 31 of 31 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful book By A Customer Anyone who has read "La Bas" (the novel Huysmans wrote before this one) needs to read "En Route", since the former plumbs the depths of evil, and this one scales the heights of Catholic devotion. It is really the story of a soul struggling to believe, and marked the turning point in Huysmans' life as he embraced Christianity. The scene where he meditates on a large crucifix as it is reflected in the water of a pond is a masterpiece of religious introspection.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Religious journey By Shirley Musich To someone raised in the Catholic faith, this book is familiar territory. To those not familiar with stories of mytical experiences and presence of evil in the world, the book may be enlightening.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. En Route is a beautiful, compelling case study of religious (re)conversion By Subterranean Subterfuge En Route is a beautiful, compelling case study of religious (re)conversion, only Dostoyevsky has matched Huysmans in capturing religious experience, in portraying a man's relationship to the Sacred having passed through the "fires of doubt," of Schopenhauerian disenchantment of existence, a weariness with life, and miraculous return to, in this case, to Catholicism, the "hospital for the soul."

"One could do worse than be a swinger of birches." ~ Robert Frost ~ Frost wrote about it, but I never knew that until I was in graduate school. As a rider of saplings during my boyhood I had no idea that this simple pleasure had been immortalized in “Birches”. Frost wrote of the look of the trees. I remember how they feel. I can’t be certain if someone showed me how to ride a sapling or if I discovered it while playing alone, like Frost’s birch rider, “Some small boy too far from town to learn baseball, whose only play was what he found himself, summer or winter, and could play alone”. Perhaps a cousin or a neighbor my age taught me the game. Maybe some athletic impulse caused me to climb a sapling, kick my feet free from a supportive limb and throw myself out into space for the swift swing to earth. What fun! And it was so available in the woods around the farm where we were sharecroppers. My stories describe a lifestyle that has all but disappeared from American culture. My hope is that the reader will enjoy learning about the work and play of a large family living on a tenant farm without electricity, running water or indoor plumbing--but on Washing day there was a washing machine that had been dreamt about for years! A luxury we could hardly afford. We heated our homes with wood and coal and cooked with propane, and I remember doing homework by the light of kerosene lamps. But most importantly, I want to share the complicated relationship between father and son, which is timeless and universal.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Beautifully Written with Amazing Detail By Cyndi Maxey This is one fabulous true account of a sharecropper 's child growing up in poverty with a strict father. Short chapters each depict a scene that draws the reader in to the tastes, smells, and feel of the moment. The writing is detailed and in spite of the often very difficult and painful situations, often very funny too. There are sweet scenes from a childhood crush, a one-room school, and washing day! And there are poignant scenes around food and survival. I hope that author Dick Meadows speaks about this book as often as possible; go hear him if he does and I would suggest reading the book first. I read it in two nights. Thank you, Dick ,for this elegant work and also for this education: I stand informed and respectful of all who lived the sharecropper's life in those days;

By Bill Kenneweg In ¨Washing Days and Other Sharecropper's Stories," Dick Meadows gives us a compelling portrait of growing up on a farm in rural Illinois in the late 1940s. The stories remind us of how difficult life could be in that era before modernization simplified so many tasks we take for granted. Nevertheless, they show how well people coped with the challenges set before them. In his characters we encounter a blending of sadness and joy, grace and moralism and pride and humility which made them so memorable in his reliving of those days. His earthly humor from life on the farm pervades all of these tales and makes their reading so pleasurable. I commend the author for at last publishing these stories in a book and making them more available to family, friends and others!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great Read By Amazon Customer I have just now finished reading Dick Meadows book. I loved it! While I am somewhat aware of his early years on the farm, I was, nonetheless, enraptured by his accounting of those times. Most enjoyable and insightful. Thanks for writing it, Dick. About the Story: The story of a very brave dog that saved the life of a young wounded veteran and how she saved his. Both are scarred and damaged... but together -- woman and dog -- find love, trust and peace. The very things they dreamed and wished for but thought they'd never have. Hannah is a combat wounded veteran; the left-side of her face is disfigured and she lost her left leg. Chief is a dog that escaped from a dogfighting ring that she adopted (against others advice because of his breed) as part of Wounded Warrior project to help veterans. While traveling in Colorado, at a rest area, Hannah is attacked by a serial killer and rapist. Chief defends her. But the police take Chief from her (permissible under Denver/Colorado law) and plan to put him down. Hannah fights to save his life. Within this entertaining, sometimes heart-wrenching, tale, is a goal to raise empathy, compassion for animals and awareness about animal cruelty. How dogs that have experienced it can be saved and rehabilitated and in turn can be a benefit to a human... sometimes even saving them with their love. About the Author: After South Vietnam was delivered to the evil North in April 1975, Duyen Nguyen after many failed attempts, finally escaped and came to the U.S. in November 1984. Mr. Nguyen was one of the almost 800,000 refugees known as, "boat people," half of which settled in the United States. He now practices law in San Jose, California. Mr. Nguyen is currently working on the re-publication of "Behind The Smoke Curtain", a novel about the Vietnam war and is also working on its sequel.

In a time before computers, Gps, the Internet, and other technological advances, reliance on blood, sweat, tears, and an old-fashioned work ethic were often the only tools people had to survive. And for an infantryman in the early days of Vietnam, helicopter rides into hot landing zones, coping with leeches, enemy combatants, difficult orders, and surviving in the jungle took all the grit and determination necessary both to endure and to approach victory. In Storm in the Jungle, a soldier chronicles his life caught seemingly in the middle of nowhere between a strange land and culture, as he is sent to war in a troop ship and tasked to set up base camps, engage in search and destroy missions, and manage tense relations with his fellow brothers in arms. As he sees the tragedy of death unfold before him for the first time-and many other times thereafter-he and the other men around him cannot help but be changed forever. Personally facing the enemy in combat and battling his way through the physical, mental, and psychological turmoil of the Vietnam War, discover how for this young infantryman the tolls of war are paid with his blood, sweat, and tears-and almost a chance at coming home.

Hardship, Suspense, and Horror: A First-Hand Story of a Young Infantry Soldier in Vietnam By Sally L What a compelling description of infantry life during the early stages of the War in Vietnam. It was a real page-turner, suspenseful and dire. I felt like I was there, in the scorchingly hot, scary jungles of Vietnam, where injury and death lurked around every corner. Dr. Allen's descriptions kept me enthralled. I didn't want the story to end. In fact, the book needs a Part 2. Private Allen went into the Army as a green, young, virginal, innocent, idealistic boy. After a year, he turned into a hardened, angry, tough as nails old man. He witnessed horrors no one should ever see and lived a nightmare. Early on and throughout, it made me proud of American boys and men. They are truly "a cut above." I couldn't put the book down.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. a must have book in your collection of classics By P. de Greyt The Lion of Flanders is one of the great novels out there, based on historical facts with some artistic licence on the facts and people, this novel will sweep you away the times of yore to the beginning of the 14th century filled with great battles,Knights and their fair ladies, although a translation of book is never as good as the original, the spirit of the book is still there. I must note that this book moved the hearts and spirits of many generations of my people including myself, though I feel that it's messages of freedom and defiance against tyranny will speak to all that read this great book. Hendrik Conscience is one of Flanders great authors who was able to capture the spirit of his people that yearn of freedom in book, that even today holds a prominent place in the heart of the Flemish people. I know that when you will read this book you will be swept away by the story and you will gain a love for adventure, a taste of freedom, and love for a people that stood up against tyranny and said "no, we will never give up and disappear quietly in the night" .

What was it about Wallis Simpson that made Edward VIII give up his throne? The twice-married Southern Belle was neither rich nor beautiful. Yet somehow, she managed to capture the heart of a British king. Was Wallis just a proud and wildly ambitious manipulator, willing to use the men she loved as stepping stones to riches and success? Or was she a courageous and sympathetic survivor, bravely struggling for self-esteem and the world’s respect? More than anything Wallis, Duchess of Windsor, was an unforgettable heroine. Marriage at eighteen, as a vivacious Southern belle, taught her what it is to be an abused wife; her second marriage, to the oh-so-English Ernest Simpson, saved her from her extraordinary past and led her to an even more extraordinary future. But the Baltimore Belle has a battle ahead of her. Not only does Wallis have to contend with the icy reception of some of the prince’s inner circle and the increasing press frenzy, but she has to win the trust of the British people in a society where divorce is frowned upon. And when George V dies and the prince becomes King, the love that the young monarch feels for Wallis creates a constitutional crisis, urging him to make a decision which will change the course of British history. Far more than a portrait, more telling than a biography, ‘Wallis: The Novel’ brings Wallis Warfield Spencer Simpson, Duchess of Windsor, vividly to life. A gripping work of historical fiction of an enigmatic and mysterious American woman breaking into the British limelight. Praise for Anne Edwards: ‘Perceptive and well researched, Wallis is a compelling and fascinating read about the controversial woman who rocked the throne of England.’ — Barbara Taylor Bradford. Wallis is Anne Edwards's seventh novel, her first in over fifteen years during which time she has been acclaimed all over the world for her biographies, including 'Matriarch: Queen Mary', 'House of Windsor' and 'Royal Sisters: Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret'. Wallis: A Novel, by Anne Edwards

From Publishers Weekly Writing with psychological acuity, in neatly controlled prose seasoned with a generous dash of spice, prolific biographer and novelist Edwards ( Royal Sisters ; Child of Night ) makes a sympathetic heroine of Wallis Warfield Spencer Simpson, the late duchess of Windsor. Born--too soon after her parents' marriage--into the aristocratic clan of Baltimore Warfields, Bessie Wallis finds that her dubious birth certificate (her real father's identity is later disclosed) and her beautiful mother's many indiscretions prove social barriers. In penurious circumstances she learns to get her way through fibbing and finagling. Though a sketchy finishing school education fits her for little more than the role of a social butterfly, she is determined to make Baltimore look up to her. Two bad marriages precede her whirlwind descent on London society, where her wit and verve as a stylish hostess enable her to stalk the popular, playboy prince of Wales. Edwards underscores her empathetic portrayal of the problematic Wallis with a clear indictment of the social order that privileged the male and punished the female for sexual transgressions. Culminating with the marriage of the duke and duchess, this entertaining, well-researched novel offers an interesting alternative to the spate of Wallis-bashing biographies of recent years. 2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Makes Me Appreciate the Simple Life By Barbarino I read somewhere about Edward VIII's abdication from the throne of England so that he could marry, American divorcee, Wallis Simpson back in the 1930s and I was curious to know more of their story, specifically his feelings about leaving the monarchy. This is a novelization, with ascribed motivations and dialogue and honestly a lot of it is really unflattering to Wallis Simpson. I'll be the first one to tell you that I'm pretty well out of touch with popular culture these days, I "un-plugged" when my daughter was born, nearly nine years ago, but I was never one to read People magazine or pay a whole lot of attention to the personal affairs of the rich and famous. So, quite a lot of this made me cringe. For some reason when I read about the affairs of Kings who are long since dead I don't think twice about whose business it is to know what happened in their private lives, it just doesn't seem to be an issue. But when the events are of a more current nature for some reason it feels different to me.I thought Wallis Simpson had a pretty interesting life before she ever met the Prince of Wales. I found her childhood and early years interesting and learning about her upbringing helped give some insight and perspective to her personality and behavior. I thought the relationship she had with her Uncle was particularly sad. Even so, she still comes off as a complete gold-digger and I wondered if she was ever satisfied with her life even after she married the King.I would have appreciated an author's note and a source or two for the various bombs that Anne Edwards drops in her version of this story. She makes very specific references to the Prince of Wales' anatomy, as well as his sexual difficulty and sterility. She also makes mention of a nanny who sexually abused him when he was two or three years old. I know it's a novelization and the author has poetic license but still I would have liked a note to say what was fabricated and what was based in fact.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. better known as Wallis Simpson By Martina @ Book Drunkard WALLIS: THE NOVEL by Anne Edwards was originally published in 1991 (re-released in November of 2015) and is the story of Bessie Wallis Warfield, better known as Wallis Simpson. The book begins with her childhood and takes the reader on an interesting journey until we ultimately see her become Duchess of Windsor. Unfortunately, that’s where the story ends. I was really looking forward to learning about her life after Edward – from what I understand it was a lonely period for her. Other than the disappointment with the ending, I enjoyed the book quite a lot. I’m not going to pretend I know it was completely factual because I don’t know a lot about Wallis or Edward. But, I was quite fascinated with the character of Wallis in this book. She knew what she wanted and went for it. More often than not, she got it, too. Despite the length of the book (Goodreads has it down at 432 pages), it was a quick and easy read. Anne Edwards usually writes biographies and I was worried that WALLIS may read like one, but I was pleasantly surprised. She captured the era and the woman perfectly, making the Duchess, I think, a sympathetic character. With romance and intrigue and a strong female character, I give , WALLIS: THE NOVEL, a fictionalized look at Wallis Simpson’s rise up the social ladder, 4 stars ****Link Text: Wallis: A Novel by Anne Edwards, review

I was very disappointed with this book By anastaciaknits Overall, I was very disappointed with this book.Wallis is written very one-sided - she's a shallow gold-digger and not much else. No one has just one side to them. The book isn't well-researched at all, there are a lot of historical inaccuracies (that I looked up just to make sure it wasn't me who was wrong, and I don't mean I did my research on the internet). There are some details in the book about Edward the III that are fascinating, but I'm pretty sure they are entirely made up, but who's to know because there is no author's note informing us of this fact - perhaps acceptable when this book was first published, but not in today's book world.I also found the book dragged throughout the first half - it was all I could do to read the long, long pages of Wallis' childhood and the drama she lived through. There is no doubt Wallis led an interesting life, but we aren't reviewing Wallis' life here, we are reviewing a historical fiction book that had too much imagination, not enough facts, and definitely was lacking in setting the scene so you felt like you were in another world.

This book is a panoramic view of a source of empowerment that was not recognized initially during the actual moments. However, with more hindsight, the proper honor and respect is now given to a matriarch of our family, with better clarity and significance. To her, as well as to others from the Southern states, cornbread in buttermilk was considered as a delicacy, yet for the Buntyn family, Cornbread in Buttermilk symbolizes The Delicacies of Love and Sacrifice. Through the snapshots of life with our grandmother, Pappie, you will be inspired to recapture the fleeting values in our social structure: fear (reverence) of God, faith in family, and fundamental education.

By Daniel King I have had several classes with Pastor Paul Buntyn at Oral Roberts University and it has been a delight to get to know him. In one of our classes, he told us about this book. Pastor Paul has become a great man of God because of the influence and example of Emma Lee Buntyn whose story is told in this book. She managed to raise a family in New York City in the midst of difficult times. If you read this book, you will be inspired by her example to live an extraordinary life.

Best Ebook The Collective Presents: Darkness Over Neverland, by Drew Avera

The Collective Presents a new take on an old story, where things aren't always what they seem, and the truth is darker than fiction. Lexandera Areva is a scribe tethered to The God-Machine, forced to write history into existence as a slave. But embrosis ultimately leads to insanity which brings about a much different version of history than you or I could ever imagine. What once was truth is not necessarily true anymore, and what was fiction may have actually come to pass. Darkness Over Neverland is one such tale. In an upside down version of one of the most popular fairy tales of all time we see how some villains have been misjudged and some heroes were never really benevolent at all. In a world with airships and alternate dimensions, we get to experience Neverland in a way not yet pondered. This is a science fiction retelling of Peter Pan and Captain Hook. This is Darkness Over Neverland. Darkness Over Neverland is a short story.

Matthews I received this eBook free of charge in exchange for an honest and non-biased review. Drew Avera did an excellent job of writing Darkness Over Neverland. The story is a definite twist on what I remember in the original. Drew Avera took the story in a direction I never would have anticipated in a million years. The darkness of it isn't really my bailey-whick, but still very well thought out and written. It is a short story, so if I go into any kind of detail I may ruin it for the reader. So you'll just have to read it for yourself...

It is a short story and a different look at some old characters, like Pan, Capt Hook and Mr. Smee. The story unfolds with Pan chasing Capt. Hook in airships. What do you think happens to them in this story? Will Capt Hook escape after using his magic bean?I guess that you should read the book to find out because I'm not going to tell!

I really enjoyed this, even though I'm not a fan of Peter Pan or stories set in Neverland (fans may be pickier and certainly more familiar than I am about something like this). I am a fan of airships and steampunk, and this reminded me more of that than anything I've ever seen in the Neverland universe.

By Bob Wojcik My father passed away because of alcoholism and I could never understand why he couldn't just stop. It bothered me to see him as he slowly slipped away from us. We used to discover his not so cleverly hidden bottles and would throw them out only to have them replaced. Even went to the extent of having him committed because of it. Little did we know that he didn't want to quit and wasn't looking for help to do it. This book has helped me better understand what he was going through. It was very emotional for me while I was reading and relating it to my own experience with the disease. Highly recommend especially if you or a loved one has had a similar experience.

The Do Over is an amazing true story about overcoming odds, the courage to be better, and achieving greatness. What an inspiration Karlyn is to summon the strength to put pen to paper and relive the demons of her dysfunctional and addictive past. The book is beautifully written and one of those books that you won't be able to put down once you start.Having grown up with alcoholism in my own family, I could relate to many of the stories of survival and allowing the past, to be the past, but taking the knowledge to build us into the individuals we are today. This book gave me insight on the very difficult journey one must take to recovery, with the help of the 12 step program, a program that my own family member could not (or would not) do.Karlyn is a true testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit. This book shows her zest for life and is unbelievably motivating.

The fact that Karlyn got help, before the alcohol killed her....THEN she was able to have the strength, courage, and drive to get back into the water and train to be the world class swimmer that she is, is extraordinary. So many people give up, not Karlyn. That takes more courage than I know. Her story of a "Do Over" can apply to everyone in their life, no matter how big or small of a do over that they are taking on!! This story also applies to life in general, not just a substance addict. Great read! Thanks for sharing your bold story, Karlyn Pipes.
