About the Author J.K.Huysmans (1847-1907) began writing as a naturalist in the style of Zola. .He changed from being an obscure author and art critic to one of the most famous authors of his day with the publication of A Rebours (Against Nature) in 1884. His novel about Satanism, La-Bas (1891)is the cult novel of the nineteenth century.

Beautiful book By A Customer Anyone who has read "La Bas" (the novel Huysmans wrote before this one) needs to read "En Route", since the former plumbs the depths of evil, and this one scales the heights of Catholic devotion. It is really the story of a soul struggling to believe, and marked the turning point in Huysmans' life as he embraced Christianity. The scene where he meditates on a large crucifix as it is reflected in the water of a pond is a masterpiece of religious introspection.

En Route is a beautiful, compelling case study of religious (re)conversion By Subterranean Subterfuge En Route is a beautiful, compelling case study of religious (re)conversion, only Dostoyevsky has matched Huysmans in capturing religious experience, in portraying a man's relationship to the Sacred having passed through the "fires of doubt," of Schopenhauerian disenchantment of existence, a weariness with life, and miraculous return to, in this case, to Catholicism, the "hospital for the soul."
