The Climb tells the extraordinary story of Chris Froome's journey from a young boy in Kenya, riding through townships and past wild animals, and with few opportunities for an aspiring cyclist, to his unforgettable yellow jersey victory in the 2013 Tour de France. A journey unlike any other in the history of cycling, Froome has crossed continents, overcome the death of his mother and conquered debilitating illness to follow his dreams and represent Team GB and Team Sky. He has experienced soaring triumphs, humbling defeats, a public rivalry with Bradley Wiggins and, most recently, the pressures of Lance Armstrong's legacy. Extraordinary, revealing and life-affirming, The Climb is a story of determination, hardship and unimaginable success.

The Climb: The Autobiography, by Chris Froome

Review "In this engaging memoir, Froome recalls his childhood in Nairobi, gives a vividly evoked account of his victory and doesn't attempt to gloss over the rivalry between the two Team Sky riders" —Mail on Sunday, Books of the Year"Hard to beat for a top pro's perspective" —Financial Times"Froome's story is an intriguing one." —Richard Williams, Guardian"A brutally tough upbringing." —Paul Kimmage, journalist"The key to (Chris's) success is his mental resilience. He might look like an unlikely strong man at first glance, but I wouldn't let that fool you. Beneath the surface there is a real fighter. He's a tough guy." —Sir Dave Brailsford, British cycling coach"Chris Froome is an absolutely phenominal athlete. It blows my mind how incredible his performances have been." —Victoria Pendleton, Olympic cyclist"Even though we don't see each other so much anymore he has lived in my dreams. He (was) wearing the yellow jersey every day and I almost felt I was wearing it myself." —David Kinjah, Chris Froome’s former cycling mentor and coach"Just a few years ago we did not have anyone who could podium, but now we have two cyclists who can win the Tour in consecutive years. It is a phenomenal achievement and what Chris has done is phenomenal." —Sir Chris Hoy, Olympic cyclist

Was not a huge Froome fan before (didn't dislike him either, just indifferent) but after reading his story it's hard not too root for the guy. He had such an interesting childhood and for the reviewer who did not like those sections, I found them to be the meat and potatoes of the story. Hearing what exactly was going on in the tour with Wiggins was also very interesting. I want to read Wiggins account now so I can compare them although I'd be inclined to believe Froome's account. Also, the insight to how Team Sky operates is very interesting. I have no trouble believing that they would be very "plan oriented" and by design unable to switch up if things do not go according to plan. All in all, one of the better books on cycling to come out in the last year or so. Although he did take a few shots at Armstrong it was refreshing to read a cycling book that was not page after page after page of Armstrong bashing.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. lots of padding By N. Brown I love reading about how the top pro's got to where they are and I've read Wiggo's, Cav's, Hoy's, Lizzie Armitstead and Micheal Hutchinson's works but this book bored me. If you want to understand that Chris liked keeping snakes and fighting turkeys then this book might be for you - the first four chapters cover his schooling in Kenya and then his err schooling in South Africa and then of course there are pages and pages on how to keep a python. I found myself skipping pages and pages of uninteresting detail of Mr Froome's childhood. Although he is undoubtedly one of the greatest cyclists the UK/Africa has ever produced an exciting read this is not.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. An amazing story By Daniel J. Connelly When I reviewed Bradley Wiggins "My Time", which was really an excellent book, I gave it only 4 out of the Amazon maximum 5 stars because while I really enjoyed it, it was perhaps missing that little bit which would make it truly at the top of the genre. If I was teaching a class in bicycling literature, for example, I don't think it would make the short list. That cannot be said of Froome's book, written primarily by David Walsh, which is really remarkable. The description of Froome's history, from Kenya to South Africa to Italy to Monaco (racing for a UK team) is an absolutelhy remarkable one. There's no way, simply no way, he should have been expected to have had the opportunity to become a pro cyclist. Yet a combination of crazy determination, miraculously good fortune, and incredibly hard work combined to make it actually happen.A common reaction to Froome is "how did he come out of nowhere to win the Tour de France?" This book describes that. It was perhaps the most consistently addictive biography I've read. 5 stars for this one is no-brainer.

Excerpt from A Lost LeaderThe two men stood upon the top of a bank bordering the rough road which led to the sea. They were listening to the lark, which had risen fluttering from their feet a moment or so ago, and was circling now above their heads. Mannering, with a quiet smile, pointed upwards."There, my friend!" he exclaimed. "You can listen now to arguments more eloquent than any which I could ever frame. That little creature is singing the true, uncorrupted song of life. He sings of the sunshine, the buoyant air; the pure and simple joy of existence is beating in his little heart. The things which lie behind the hills will never sadden him. His kingdom is here, and he is content."Borrowdean's smile was a little cynical. He was essentially of that order of men who are dwellers in cities, and even the sting of the salt breeze blowing acress the marshes - marshes riven everywhere with long arms of the sea - could bring no colour to his pale cheeks.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Political and Romantic Thriller of Victorian England. By Dharma Mr Lawrence Mannering is a brilliant Liberal politician who has retired early to the country after his party lose power. He pursues the contemplative life, appreciating the joys of rural England, and writing occasionally for the journals. He meets and falls in love with a woman who has rented a cottage nearby for the summer. But Mannering is too charismatic to be left alone.Sir Leslie Borrowdean, an ambitious and crafty colleague, is sent to bring Mannering out of retirement, for the good of the party. "He had left London at a moment when he could ill be spared and had not travelled to this out-of-the-way corner of the kingdom to exchange purposeless platitudes with a man whose present attitude towards life...he heartily despised."Mannering has several reasons for his reticence to return. Not the least of which are his obligations to Mrs. Blanche Phillimore and her daughter. Mannering is indebted to her, in a manner which remains long undisclosed, and she impedes his advancement.Whether he will return to politics, how he resolves his obligations, and what happens to his love for the beautiful neighbor? These and other elements of Victorian morality, society, and politics are the substance of the novel. In the early 20th Century, the condition of the working class produced significant turmoil in the left leaning political parties. The Liberal party, which had enjoyed support of the working class, was under threat from the Labour party, and trade unionists, who were the leading edge of the socialist/communist movement. This novel shows considerable sympathy for the condition of the poorest workers, who have lost their jobs to automation, recession, and layoffs. The use of Tariffs (taxes on foreign trade) to protect British industry is the heart of the political question in this story.1907

Brooks This is a great political mystery that is timeless even though it is over 100 years old. Once you start with Oppenheim, you'll get hooked on his swift paced stories with fascinating characters. It's also fun to have a window into a world where people were polite to each other (even when a murder plot was afoot) and the language is family friendly

This man can write! With his superb plots and adept character development, it is no wonder that I am hooked.

The Writing Life By Angela Having been engaged in the writing practice as suggested in Julia Cameron's The Artist Way for more than 15 years, I am now a successful unblocked creative person. As a result I no problem participating in a writing workshop where was introduced to the writing practice of Natalie Goldberg and her book Wild Mind. Without realizing it I combined the practice of my writing the morning pages as suggested by Julia Cameron and throughout the day the 10 minute "Keep your hand moving" practice as suggested by Natalie Goldberg. My creative productivty moved in directions I would have never thought possible. I was so excited I when I came upon this CD in researching for my own writing workshop. Julia Cameron and Natalie Goldberg share their experience, beliefs and insight of the creative process that moves way beyound the mechanics of writing. This is a great CD for anyone looking for a jump start in their creative process. Highly recommended.

There are so many questions and doubts we have as writers. This narrative touches on issues we all have with our insecurities, as well as helping to get in better touch with what we have inside. This is spoken from the viewpoint of two very successful women writers, who share their self-discoveries through their writing and teaching. I am very happy to add this to my library and sure I will listen to it again and again.

It had some good thought in it.I think that if I'd read their books first, I would have gotten more out of it. I think that when you really love an author, you would take time to go sit in on one of their talks. This is two authors in a round table setting with a interviewer asking them both questions in kind of a conversation format. Where they talk back and forth to each other about their answers. If you are familiar with either of these women and have liked their books then I would recommend this book. But just as a writer looking for feedback, I would probably not recommend it unless I was friends with one of the authors. If you are a young writer, starting out it might be interesting. I'd click on the sample first.

“Bedazzled by a cloud of thick smoke and thousands of bright electric sparks, I instinctively knew I had to get as far away as possible from the immediate danger... I could hear the strange humming sound of high voltage. A sound I had heard before, walking past an electric installation. The sound, at that moment in time, made no sense to me. My eyes desperately searched the vicinity of the boat, hoping to find my brother and friends...” The triumphant true story written by Braam Louw, following double limb amputations in an accident in 1984 that grasped the attention of the public and the media, is carefully portrayed in this autobiography that will touch the heart and soul of the reader.

An Angel of a Book By caz If you have a guardian angel or wish you did and wonder what they might get up to when not immediately present, this is definitely the book for you. An imaginative, well written story that is guaranteed to raise the spirits of even the most ardent non believer.

You will not want to keep this book unread for very long By amanda blount I was sent this book as a free gift from the author to provide an honest review. I only review one book or Indie movie per week and this week I chose to read “Catch the Moon, Mary,” by Wendy Waters.I’m the type of reader who reads an entire book. I read everything, from the front cover to the back. I read the publishing details, the “thank you” page, the back cover, and all pages in-between. I learn a lot from those pages. Please take the time to read those pages. Not reading them is like buying a book and skipping a chapter. There is so much information the writer offers on those extra pages, they are worth reading. One of the many items I learned about Wendy is, besides being an award winning author, she is also musically talented. She is not only a composer and a lyricist but, in 2011, she also volunteered for underprivileged musically talented children. I do think these children had their own Guardian Angel when Wendy devoted her talents to help them take the next steps to greatness. One of the first things I noticed about Wendy Waters is the amount of love she showed to the people who supported her on this journey. Many writers have a hard time with this, but Mrs. Waters handled this subject with grace and from a place of real respect for her team. She acknowledges how she struggled to edit and re-edit the book, so that she could bring a great product to the market. Obviously, there are many authors who rush to self-publish, not taking the time needed to provide a fantastic product for the public. Mrs. Waters did not rush this book to the public. She worked with a great team and developed a product worth purchasing and worth reading. You will not want to keep this book unread for very long. In a market, which is saturated with many unedited works, her time and patience to release this book is a breath of fresh air.Catch The Moon, Mary is a story based on a musically gifted child who is befriended by a Guardian Angel. So many questions touched my heart while reading this story. What would you dare promise for the one thing you love? What sacrifices would you be willing to accept to accomplish all your dreams? How far would you allow someone in your life to protect you? Would you allow someone to kill for you to protect you and your career? Would a mother or father kill for their children? How would a child view this arrangement? Where is the line between true love, protection of your loved ones, and a full mental illness? When does love become an abusive relationship?Always remember, when an angel appears in your life, angels come from many places and not all of them are good.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. love, and the transcendent powers of art By Marija Spirkovska In "Catch the Moon, Mary" Waters composes an extraordinary tale that intertwines a Faustian pact between a musical child-prodigy and a beguiling angel with the themes of family, love, and the transcendent powers of art. Waters’ style is lyrical, captivating, and rich, flowing melodiously through the original structure that comprises musical compositions and rhythms rather than conventional chapters. Thus, content and form complement each other in following a meandering narrative path which, for all of the novel’s magical realism, is tenaciously natural and greedily life-affirming. Indeed Jennifer, the motherly gardener, confirms this: ‘Nature travels in a cruel and twisted, but profoundly honest line’.On the other hand, the plight of the angel as a representative of divinity enables Waters to scrutinise religion in a subtly subversive way. She fills in biblical blanks all the way back to the Genesis, and exposes, ironically, the delusions of Christian devoutness against a far different reality. Thematically, therefore, the novel is layered and complex. The characters’ thoughts and intentions unfold clearly, while the evocative language triggers a strong synaesthetic response in both the characters and the reader. Mary’s growth from a girl to a mature woman is reminiscent of a Bildungsroman as she teeters precariously between life and death, sanity and madness. Yet, some of the other characters, such as Robert Goodman, could benefit from further development rather than being sacrificed for the sake of action. This, however, does not diminish the unique powers the novel wields in kindling and guiding the reader’s imagination.

A Life Well Fished isn't just about fishing... ...Sure, there are plenty of fishing tales, but it also chronicles a successful life journey--generously laced with wit and humor. ***No sparkly vampires or buff werewolves roam the "twilight" ... just ornery, toothy fish and a boogeyman or three. ***No fifty shades of grey here ... only one or two that tint a modular corporate cubicle. ***And no princesses with icy-glittering rhinestones ... only kidney stones and nagging "frozen" shoulders. The author swims boldly (wait, he can't swim at all...) into the minutia of Americana where few writers dare to cast a line: shopping for bacon; hooking himself instead of the trophy musky he's pursuing; and dealing with sweaty arm pits (that was the least of his problems) on a "dream date" gone awry. Oh, and on a grander level, join his humorous troll that seeks to hook the answer to the enigmatic "Meaning of Life" question. Hop aboard (make sure you're wearing a life vest!) and prepare to smile. This lighthearted portrait is sure to catch your imagination!

By Amazon Customer What really makes this book an enjoyable read is the spirit in which it is written – you will find yourself smiling and laughing out loud at the many predicaments, mishaps, and humorous observations told with a self-deprecating edgy wit. The author humorously chronicles a life journey experienced from the perspective of a fisherman: from a child’s wonder of discovery while pan fishing the local pond; to a teenager’s first experiences with the sights, smells and sounds of the Canadian wilderness; to a man’s savoring of decades of stories and camaraderie gained by sharing his adventures on the water with his closest friends and family. Between fishing pursuits, we are treated to vivid descriptions of growing up as a Chicago baby boomer and tales of school, work and play as a middle class husband/father who, all the while, is continually plotting his next trip to the lake. A fun read all around.

A Truly Believable Fish Story By Merrill H I have known the author for a number of years though mostly through phone conversations and taking care of his in his words" his nearest and dearest non human friend, his boat. His demeanor on the phone has been low key so I was pleasantly surprised by the humor, the candor and the truly lighthearted nature of the book. He brought back many of my own childhood memories and I was interested to learn just how much we have had in common. The book takes you through a range of emotions. It made me laugh and made me cry and many emotions in between. I recommend this book to anyone to likes to have those same emotions brought out in themselves. The best books aren't always about celebrities but about the true life experiences of people we know the best. Well done Ed. I hope there is another one in you. As Bob Hope would say. Thanks for the memories

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I was "hooked" and "reeled" in from the beginning until the end. By tnap This is an interesting story of a man obsessed with fishing from his birth until today. The book weaves through his life experiences, from early adventures as a youth, job experiences, recreational activities, and personal stories, all told in a framework of a fishing adventure. There are serious tales, but many more humorous chapters that delight the reader and create "laugh-out-loud" moments. As a member of the baby boom generation, I can relate to many of the same experiences as the author. If you ever fished before and want to relive those times, this book will transport you to your warmest memories of those hours spend on the water, casting your line. I certainly was "caught" by this book's "bait". I highly recommend it.

Excerpt from The Ivory TowerThe Ivory Tower, one of the two novels which Henry James left unfinished at his death, was designed to consist of ten books. Three only of these were written, with one chapter of the fourth, and except for the correction of a few obvious slips the fragment is here printed in full and without alteration. It was composed during the summer of 1914. The novel seems to have grown out of another which had been planned by Henry James in the winter of 1909-10. Of this the opening scenes had been sketched and a few pages written when it was interrupted by illness. On taking it up again, four years later, Henry James almost entirely recast his original scheme, retaining certain of the characters (notably the Bradham couple,) but otherwise giving an altogether fresh setting to the central motive. The new novel had reached the point where it breaks off by the beginning of August 1914. With the outbreak of war Henry James found he could no longer work upon a fiction supposed to represent contemporary or recent life. The completed chapters - which he had dictated to his secretary, in accordance with his regular habit for many years past - were revised and laid aside, not again to be resumed.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Ivory Tower (Classic Reprint), by Henry James

Review "Late, piercing, morally incisive look at the unscrupulous rich." —The Guardian"In The Ivory Tower, James was still experimenting with the impressions of his American tour….There is a vivid sense conveyed of the bright sea and summer air and the great, crazy, overdecorated “villas,” but the keenest impression is of the various people that the hero meets….The effect is as remarkable as anything that James ever achieved." —Louis Auchincloss"James’s last novel…denounced, with all the delicacy and subtlety of his style, the world he had seen, at Biltmore, at Lenox, in the great houses of New York and Newport. He had reclaimed his American heritage, but he seems to have felt it wasn’t worth reclaiming. “You seem all here so hideously rich,” says his hero. [The Ivory Tower is] a dense and powerfully conceived work." —Leon Edel

About the Author Henry James was an American author, essayist, and critic known for his contributions to both literary criticism and the realist movement, which focused on presenting everyday life as it actually was. In creating realistic portrayals of life and society, James often included elements of social and political commentary in his works, notably his depiction of the feminist movement in The Bostonians, and the exploration of culture clash between America and Europe in Daisy Miller. James s best known works also include The Portrait of a Lady, The Ambassadors, and the novella The Turn of the Screw. American by birth, James spent much of his time in England and eventually moved to London. He became a British subject just before his death in 1916.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. James' start on a novel about the effects of the capitalist system on a sensitive person, By T. M. Teale Set in a fabulously wealthy neighborhood in Newport, Rhode Island--in August of, say, 1911--the novel opens with Rosanna Gaw walking from her house to another nearby, where the wealthy Frank Betterman lies dying. Both Mr. Betterman and Rosanna are awaiting the arrival from Europe of the dying man's nephew, Graham Fielder, "Gray" to his intimates. As Rosanna anticipates Gray's arrival, it is intimated that Gray will inherit a colossal sum of money. All of Henry James' novels are about the effects of money--or the lack of it--on people, however, The Ivory Tower, barely half-finished, would have given us more: a long reflection on the getting and keeping and accumulating of money at the expense of others. It would seem that James intended a novel--told largely through Gray Fielder--about the vulgarity of capitalist accumulation, but he left it unfinished at his death in 1916. And what a paradox! The world of drawing room manners that he analyzed would come crashing down before World War I was over. (Reprinted at the end of the book is an indispensable essay on James' craft of writing by none other than the poet Ezra Pound.)Somewhere in his career, James remarked that he wanted to be a person on whom "nothing is lost," a person so perceptive that the subtlest movement of others would not pass him by, and here, Gray Fielder seems to be James' alter ego, the man on whom nothing is lost. Fielder is the kind of character James meant in his Preface to The Princess Casamassima: "the person capable of feeling in the given case more than another of what is to be felt for it [the subject of the novel], and so serving in the highest degree to record it dramatically ... is the only sort of person on whom we can count not to betray ... the value and beauty of the thing" (p. 67 in The Art of the Novel). Fielder has inherited such a huge sum of money that he has much to feel about it; he almost feels immoral. And, of course, some experienced money-maker will surely enter the novel to take the money off Gray's hands. Here--I must say--that James' prose is so densely-packed (some would say 'overwritten') that I lost track of the action (what little there was). Page after page is written from inside the mind of Fielder that there seems to be nothing left "to be felt for it."Had he lived, I think Henry James would have realized that his prose was too fine for his purpose: a different kind of writer would be needed to show that wealthy people appear "civilized" only because someone else does the vulgar labor, and that, indeed, a lot of swindling goes on behind the most genteel.

With out knowing why we do what we do, we judge, put down and even walk away from the other. This book puts a human face on the pain and the alienation of one young man from Ottawa, Canada and his travels as he runs away and then returns to self.

"Gift of Darkness" tells the story of a boy who, like Anne Frank, lived in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. Unlike Anne, he was not taken into early hiding, but was able to move around the city, even to help serve its Jewish community, and observe first-hand the ominous things that were happening. Robbert Van Santen lived each day not knowing how or when the war would end, not being sure that he would survive, not imagining that as an elder he would articulate his experiences to an American author. To put one of Mary Oliver's poetic phrases in a new context, his story is "a box full of darkness," but in the telling he offers the author and the reader the gift of stepping into his shoes and thus the satisfaction of coming to understand a teenager's challenging life. What did Robbert do afterward? He sought "to find joy in life despite what happened. Not instead of the memories, but as a response to them."

Gift of Darkness: Growing Up in Occupied Amsterdam, by Craig K. Comstock

Review Kirkus Review "A heart-rending biography of a [Jewish] teenager who lived under Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.... A moving, inspiring account of the indomitability of the human spirit." See the full review at: kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/craig-k-comstock/gift-of-darkness/ "Comstock has performed a valuable service in putting these vivid, close-up memories on the record. It is almost unimaginable that all of this happened, miraculous that this young eyewitness survived, and we can be grateful that the author encouraged him to tell the tale." - Adam Hochschild, author of Bury the Chains and To End All Wars, finalist for the National Book Award"A brilliant initiation into empathy, Gift of Darkness lets us slip into the shoes of a teenager witnessing the Nazi occupation of his country. Instead of simply learning about what happened, we share step by step the uncertainty of living when we don't know how things will turn out. Just like real life. Instead of sleep-walking, we get an opportunity to feel." -Liza Ingrasci, President, the Hoffman Institute"Comstock is one of those thoughtful moral voices we all need to hear. Early in his life he urged JFK to propose the idea that became the Peace Corps. He is also a powerful writer ... Gift of Darkness is a strong and moving portrait of how ordinary daily life interacts with extraordinary human brutality, and how people struggle to retain their moral core in circumstances that no human should have to face." - Paul Rogat Loeb, author of Soul of a Citizen and The Impossible Will Take a Little While: A Citizen's Guide to Hope in a Time of Fear"This book sensitively deals with heart-wrenching examples of what happens when people denigrate others. Through the real-life experiences of one Amsterdam teenager, Comstock brilliantly reveals the hidden costs of prejudice and how, by developing compassion, human beings can move in constructive directions."  -Sharon Tennison, pioneer citizen diplomat in Russia and author of The Power of Impossible Ideas:Ordinary Citizens' Extraordinary Efforts to Avert International Crises"The author has effectively (and poetically) captured the poignancy of a young, frightened human being facing the unthinkable, the unimaginable possibility of what Hannah Arendt called “the banality of evil,” and attempting to cope with the disjunction this creates in the psyche. Like the frog in the gradually hotter pan of eventually boiling water, the protagonist doesn’t fully realize what is happening and cannot respond “normally.” Isn’t this eerily true of so many of us during times of increasing violence, negation, and demonization? Gift of Darkness strikes me as a prescient wake-up call for our time."--Vicki Noble, Author of Motherpeace: A Way to the Goddess and Shakti Woman: Feeling Our Fire, Healing Our World"Tender, discerning, and beautifully told, Gift of Darkness describes the adolescence of a Jewish boy coming of age during the Nazi war. A great inspiration. I recommend this book." --Margot Anand, Author, The Art of Sexual Ecstasy"Before you know it, Comstock’s gripping book has slipped you into the slowly terrifying darkness of the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, told in large part through the adolescent eyes of Robbert." --Stuart Sovatsky, Ph.D., author, Advanced Spiritual Intimacy and Words From the Soul: Time, East/West Spirituality, and Psychotherapeutic Narrative

About the Author Craig K. Comstock has worked mainly with private clients as a “book creation coach” and also, for five years, as director of the Ark Foundation, seeking ways to end the Cold War. A graduate of Harvard College, he was the features editor of the Crimson and winner of the Frank Knox fellowship for study abroad. After graduate work at Stanford University on “social imagination,” he became co-director of the William James Center for Adult Development at the Wright Institute in Berkeley. Following a childhood in the New York City suburbs and an adulthood largely in the San Francisco Bay Area, he now lives with his wife in southern Oregon. The author or named editor of several books, Craig is now revising a draft about amazing people, some of whom he met in his forties and who illustrate the process of enlarging one’s comfort zone.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Tale of Two Stories By Karen W. I read Gift oif Darkness expecting a sort of nonfiction thriller or exciting piece of biography. The book delivered that, in the form of a vivid and suspenseful story of life for a teenage Jew during the Nazi occupation of his native city. Like the subject’s schoolmate Anne Frank, three-quarters of Jews in the Netherlands were killed. That was the “darkness” of the title. So what is the “gift”? The book tells about the friendship, half a century later, between the subject and a US writer working to take in an experience very different from his own world. The author not only pieces together a story of long ago, based on many interviews and on visits to Amsterdam, but also resists assuring the subject, “I know exactly how you felt.” Instead, he leads us through the process of dealing with the aftermath of trauma, a theme explored in the Foreword by Frances Weller, a psychotherapist and expert of grief. Readers who want to treat themselves to a thrilling story can focus on most of chapters 3-8 plus 10-11 and 13-15. Those who, like me, are fascinated by the process of getting the story can also welcome chapter 9, plus 1-2 and parts of others. The book invites us into two interwoven accounts, and I don’t know which is more valuable. By the way, the 1940s history is told in the present tense, as if we are there. The account of the occupation years is a tribute both to the subject and to the writer, who through his artistry, converts a mountain of facts into a narrative told with breath-taking immediacy in the present tense.

Dark memories, sensitively handled By Roger Mueller I felt ushered into a world of darkness by the author, Craig Comstock, whose sensitive and empathic interviewing of Robbert gradually led me into the sickness and horror that became routine during the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam. Comstock's inclusion of verbatim dialogue between him and Robbert gives a feeling of immediacy to the biography. I could picture the two of them in Amsterdam and in San Francisco, unwinding the tangled web of painful memories. Comstock's own reflections on the encounters with Robbert also helped me appreciate the relevance to our world today and its "dark stories."

This book is so much more than a thriller, though it is that as well. It is exquisitely crafted and creatively written in the present tense while presenting an eye-opening and to me a very different story of the Nazi occupation in Holland. It is a drama that unfolds through revelatory story the calculated destruction of a people and a boy that survives.
