As his world was torn further apart, David's only wish was to escape--to walk away--but how could he? How would he ever find the peace he so desperately needed? On a golf course in Ireland, the answer came. Thus began a ten-year quest, taking David to 290 courses throughout the British Isles. As he was about to leave on his final trip, he looked out the windshield of his car and realized where he would find his peace.A Long Walk with Sally will touch golfers, parents, and anyone who has faced the loss of a child. By asetts “A Long Walk with Sally”Written by David Clark, JRA Loving Family, Golf, and a tragic life changing event all come together in David Clark Jr’s personal story of golf and the loss of his 19 year old daughter Sally, the sweet “sunshine” of his life.As a Father of a daughter, an avid golfer and traveler to the British Isles, I could not wait to open this book. I have read many golf and travel books including the Jim Dodson story,” Final Rounds: A Father, A Son, The Golf Journey Of A Lifetime,” an experience overseas he shares with his Dad prior to his death. Yet, the thought of a man traveling overseas to walk great courses in search of peace with his daughter’s tragic death would be a perspective that I was not at all prepared for. With that understatement, I could not fight back the tears in several chapters as Mr. Clark shared his most intimate feelings and deepest hurts. Many golfers, including myself, have stood on the 18th tee at Lahinch and tried to ignore the left side of that hole, despite it being the shorter way home. No one has ever stood on that tee after 71 other very meaningful holes, on four trying golf courses and could feel the pressure Mr. Clark was feeling on that final tee box. I kept hearing the voice in my head say over and over, “FIND IT DAVID, FIND IT!” The emotional pendulum was heavy and in constant motion.Throughout the book, Mr. Clark shares his family’s struggles and his personal wishes for both his family and himself in a style convincing you that he has it covered and that he will “figure it out” with Jo and the others. The others in his life played significant roles at key times and as Mr. Clark realized on his long walk, he truly was not alone! The golf course list was very impressive and well explained in the book. Mr. Clark didn’t just rely on the “experts” and the popular two or three guide books; he literally went everywhere he felt he needed to go in his quest. I wish the two closing chapters of photos were captioned, especially the golf trip photos. Some of these shots looked familiar or enticing and some screamed out “great story” and maybe someday I will have a chance to walk in to Mr. Clark’s life and he will share one or two of them. Thank you again David for sharing this story.

Most importantly, David Clark's story of the tragic loss of his daughter Sally is a well-written and compelling account of how he and his wife Jo dealt with the sudden death of his daughter at the hands of a drunk driver. As others who have experienced the death of a child can attest, such a death is about the hardest to deal with, particularly when the death seems so senseless. David acknowledges that his faith in Christ was instrumental in pulling him through his darkest hours. At the same time, he found a unique way of working through the emotions over a period of several years. An avid and accomplished golfer, David, who had always loved playing the links courses in the British Isles, set out to play every links course in Great Britain and Ireland. This task took him several years, made more difficult in part by the continued discovery of new link course as well as by questions as to what exactly counts as a link course. When he finally achieved his goal, David had played close to 300 courses, some of them in heavy rain. Sensing that he has Sally with him every step of the way, he finally reconciles himself to Sally's death and to God's purpose in taking her.David Clark's story should prove fascinating for everyone, particularly for those who have experienced the loss of a child. Although having a love of golf is an added benefit, you don't have to be a golfer to appreciate the book.

Sally's Memory By Veronica Arnold David and Jo:When I received your book "A Long Walk With Sally", I started that afternoon reading it and could hardly put it down. Truly my heart beats with rushing sounds as I made my way through your book. At times, I would cry...well okay, many times. Losing a child could be one of the hardest things in life. We don't understand it, but God does and He does not make mistakes. Your book brought clarity to my mind that many mothers and fathers who have lost a child should get your book. I personally think it would help them with their struggles, perhaps even change their lives in a way that would glorify our Lord the way it did with the author, David Clark, Jr., who wrote this book about losing his daughter Sally, and his niece Grace, in a horrible car accident in April of 2004 due to (none other than a drunk driver). Much time and thought was given to the book and I admire David and Jo for their courage to write their life story of losing their daughter. Our hearts will forever be broken...but, God says he binds up the wounds and heals the broken-hearted, (Psalm 147:3) so with that, I have read the book and know that David and Jo have put their trust in Him along with the two ponds they build in memory of these two sweet girls and "Sallys Y", where people can go and exercise and forget their troubles of life that encamps each of us every day. Thanks for my signed copy and I will cherish it for a lifetime. I never will loan it out to anyone, because it was signed by David to me and for that alone, I appreciate it more. I give this book a 5-Star...because I went to high school with Sally's father and mother. What a special treasure that I have!!!God bless David and Jo and their two sons as they navigate through life now and for their obedience to The Lord, He will honor them with a beautiful granddaughter to love. She would never take the place of Sally...but it sure is close. I know because I have two granddaughters and are not allowed to see them. So you see, I have a broken heart too.

Long ago in ancient China, there were old masters who had miraculous skills. Even in their old age, their bodies were like iron. When they struck back, it only took one hit and the enemy was dead. Now many centuries later we no longer see these skills. The basic martial skills once taught are ignored and more “modern” day training is used instead. If these new methods are better, then why does the modern martial artist not exhibit the same skills of the old masters? The answer is simple, they have no chi skills. In this book is a 100 day plan to increase your internal strikes using the methods used by Shaolin and Wudang.

Murderers Still Loose: With Important Life and Safety Lessons (Ghastly Unsolved Murders Book 1), by Everett Walsh

About the Author During the 30 years that Everett Walsh worked as an undercover detective, he witnessed far too many crime scenes where people transformed into monsters, ravaging and killing their victims by the most heinous methods. In 2015 Everett took early retirement to follow his passion: writing. This is his first unsolved murder novella, containing ten stories of 33+ victims, some who suffered the most hideous deaths that most human minds can’t even conceive.

This could have been a book that you have read before but the author has made the stories very interesting with information I have not seen before.Additionally, the author provides advice without being preachy about how things could have gone differently in each case if people would have been more aware and careful in there action. I found this to be interesting and well though out. There are a total of ten cases that cover time periods from the late 1800s to the 2000s. I find the older stories, and there are plenty, to be interesting because in many cases I am not familiar with them. This book has some well know cases like Natalie Holloway and the Benders and some lesser known though interesting cases like Ken Mex Rex McElroy and the Keddie murders. If you are looking for a true crime book that is written a bit differently, in a positive way, then I would check this book out.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Interesting and useful at the same time By Tomislav Within this book, Everett Walsh provides us with ten enthralling stories of unsolved cases. They are all quite varied - they span a few centuries, have different victims and overall bring many distinct cases to the table. I personally liked the format of this book. It has a norm for how the cases are presented and it doesn’t stray away from it. We are always introduced properly into the case, given background information and then the author continues to follow the case with detail. At the end of the cases, there are also “What we learnt” reminders that not only remind us of mistakes we or our close ones should avoid making, but also provide help with sorting out the story in our heads for all who are interested in the stories themselves.“Murderers Still Loose: With Important Life and Safety Lessons” is a worthy read, in my opinion, so I strongly suggest it to anyone in search for stories like this or tips to leading a safer life.

Celebrated nineteenth-century photographer -- and writer, actor, caricaturist, inventor, and balloonist -- Félix Nadar published this memoir of his photographic life in 1900 at the age of eighty. Composed as a series of vignettes (we might view them as a series of "written photographs"), this intelligent and witty book offers stories of Nadar's experiences in the early years of photography, memorable character sketches, and meditations on history. It is a classic work, cited by writers from Walter Benjamin to Rosalind Krauss. This is its first and only complete English translation.

In When I Was a Photographer (Quand j'étais photographe), Nadar tells us about his descent into the sewers and catacombs of Paris, where he experimented with the use of artificial lighting, and his ascent into the skies over Paris in a hot air balloon, from which he took the first aerial photographs. He recounts his "postal photography" during the 1870-1871 Siege of Paris -- an amazing scheme involving micrographic images and carrier pigeons. He describes technical innovations and important figures in photography, and offers a thoughtful consideration of society and culture; but he also writes entertainingly about such matters as Balzac's terror of being photographed, the impact of a photograph on a celebrated murder case, and the difference between male and female clients. Nadar's memoir captures, as surely as his photographs, traces of a vanished era.

Review

A legendary book, imbued with the rogue personality of its author, finally appears in English, allowing us to wander with him through his memories of a key moment in our modernity. A vital contribution to our understanding of photography both then and now.

(Geoffrey Batchen, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand)

Eloquently nostalgic, discreetly ironic about nostalgia, these pages from another time tell us all kinds of witty, often oblique tales of photography -- from the air, underground, of the dead and the living, in and out of history. Nadar was many other things as well as a photographer but once he had started he never stopped being one, even when he wasn't using a camera. He hasn't stopped now. The deftly translated words of this book offer pictures that prove it.

(Michael Wood, Princeton University)

Nadar's book has finally been translated into English.... [M]any of the vignettes in When I Was a Photographer are infused with his rebellious zest.

(The Wall Street Journal)

This compact volume gives the sense of being present for the invention of photography…. [Nadar] writes engagingly of photographing a dead man and meeting a bee tamer, and we are charmed.

(San Francisco Chronicle)

When I Was a Photographer brims with Nadar's wisdom on a multitude of subjects and subtleties of creative work

(Brain Pickings)

By Melanie After reading When the Smoke Clears and When a Heart Stops, I was really anticipating When a Secret Kills - the conclusion to Lynette Eason's Deadly Reunion series. Let me say, it definitely met my expectations (which were really high) and When a Secret Kills just may be my favorite of the series.Jillian and Colton were great main characters. I liked them from the beginning and, as the story continued, my affection for them kept growing. :) I did get a little frustrated with Meg, though.I loved the romance story in When a Secret Kills. It was sweet and realistic. I liked how the couple already knew each other and had been in love, but circumstances separated them, so it wasn't an "instant" romance. When a Secret Kills also had a lot of surprises. There were some things in Jillian's story I just did not expect. Oh, and I loved the ending! It was cool how Lynette Eason wrapped things up.Overall, I loved When a Secret Kills. This book held my attention from the beginning on and I had a hard time putting it down. I recommend it if you enjoy romantic suspense books. I think you should probably read the series in order, though, as it'll definitely help with context. Wonderful read! :)*I received a complimentary copy of this book for my review. I was not required to give a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I've done. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*"Available May 2013 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group."

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Didn't see the end coming By Kindle Customer Talk about a twist from what I thought the ending was going to be! A suspenseful conclusion to a three book series that can has kept me on my toes.I have been waiting for Jillian's story for three novels now. She has been the reason and the driving forward behind what our killer has aimed for. It takes courage for her to come back and face the man who she believes to be after her life and the girl doesn't get much of a break! It seemed with this title, there needed to be an explosion or death threat every couple of chapters to keep the tension level high. After a bit this pace became a bit old, but the romance leveled in was a nice balancing act. As I mentioned above, the end had a fantastic twist that I didn't see coming for three books. I think it was a surprise for our would-be murderer too. Talk about depravity...but it was interesting and different. Made for a "did that really just happen??" moment.Contemporary suspense with a flair of romance and more than just a pinch of fast finger-flicking through the pages. A weekend read sure to keep you up late to find out "who did it".This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to the publishers for my copy to review.**Available May 2013 from Revell, a division of Baker Publishers**

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. exciting conclusion filled with twists and turns! By K. Ingerto I have loved Lynette Eason's Deadly Reunions series and I was looking forward to the conclusion to this series as soon as I finished book 2! In book 3, "When A Secret Kills," Jillian returns home after being away for ten years, ten years spent living under a different name, and constantly being on alert and looking over her shoulder. Jillian has changed; however her feelings for Colton have not and very quickly Colton learns his feelings for Jillian are the same as they were ten years ago. However, Jillian is sure that she saw Colton's uncle kill someone; is Colton someone Jillian can trust and will Colton want anything to do with her especially when he finds out another one of her secrets. As the group seeks the truth, they are continuing to be on high alert as they are finding their lives in danger and each time coming closer to death. This is such a fast-paced read and one that you will not want to or be able to put down until you reach the end! I was kept guessing throughout the book (really the whole series!) as to what exactly happened on graduation night ten years ago, who was involved and who knows what. This is an excellent series and one that I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys romantic suspense. This series is a must-read in order as each of the novels pick right up where the previous one ended. The Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico washes a cache of doomsday weapons onto a Mexican beach: bombs filled with VX nerve gas mixed with anthrax, invented by the Nazis during World War II and perfected by the United States to use in the Cold War. The bombs soon fall into the wrong hands and create an unstoppable opponent. Only one Chicago police detective has a chance of preventing those bombs from being used on American soil.

Reeling from the recent murder of her husband as well as allegations of police misconduct, Detective Superstition "Sue" Davis is thrown into an undercover assignment. She must infiltrate the Mexican narcotics cartel responsible for the death of her husband in order to get close to the cartel's sociopathic enforcer, Jiménez "Jimmy" Garcia.

But when the entire Garcia family is killed in Mexico by a US Special Forces raid gone wrong, Garcia will stop at nothing to get vengeance, including triggering newly acquired bombs on American soil. Superstition's assignment quickly becomes more dangerous than planned as the threat of a terrorist attack looms closer.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A story laced with explosions, murder, drug cartels and nuclear weapons that is sure to pack a punch with readers! By Jessica Higgins Reeling from the recent murder of her husband as well as allegations of police misconduct, Detective Superstition “Sue” Davis goes straight into an undercover assignment trying to infiltrate the Mexican narcotics cartel that caused her husband’s death. The leader is a sociopathic enforcer, Jimmy Garcia. When the U.S. Border Patrol finds drugs in the car of Jimmy’s sister they send her to prison. This becomes the perfect way for Sue to get close to the family and find a way to get her revenge on the man that took the life of her husband. There is a second part to her assignment, Garcia has found a large cache of doomsday weapons. Bombs filled with VX nerve gas mixed with anthrax, invented by the Nazis during World War 2 and perfected by the United States to use in the Cold War. When Garcia’s family is killed by a U.S. Special Forces raid gone wrong, he vows to get his vengeance using these weapons. There is so much story in this one book it is hard to know what to say about it. Parts of the story were great, full of tension that leapt off the page. Other parts seemed to drag the rest of the story down and bring it to a screeching halt. The main point of the story, Sue trying to get revenge for her husband’s death and stop Garcia from using the dirty bombs was done really well. The characters had depth to them and kept the story moving. Gericke did a very good job painting the picture of a cop that was grieving the loss of her family but found a release for the emotions by focusing on what needed to be done. At the turn of every page there was another threat that had to be dealt with bringing the story to a whole new level. The rest of the story focused on the bombs being made and the back and forth from the WW11 and Cold War era to present day didn’t work as well. It was hard to follow what was happening at these times that related to the rest of the story. I think these moments could have been condensed and kept the story going. Gericke weaved the story together for the most with the exception of these moments. That would be the main downfall for me with this novel.

A cracking good thriller By Sharon Actual rating: 3.5 out of 5Information as to the key points of the storyline are in the synopsis so I won't add any more as I do not want to giveaway any more of the plot line.Plot wise though there is a lot going on, a heck of a lot from the opening scenes of an offshore platform disaster in the Gulf of Mexico to the trials and tribulations of the sociopathic drugs cartel leader Jimmy Garcia and his family, chiefly his sister; we flash back to WWII and Nazi Germany to witness the development, and then the experimentation of nerve gas agents on human guinea pigs by the Japanese. Then we are brought bang up to date again with Superstition's involvement as an undercover agent.I didn't have a problem keeping up with the multitude of threads in the story, but I did wonder how Gericke would plausibly mesh them together. There was never a dull moment and Gericke does an fantastic job of keeping the action and tension flowing in perfect symbiosis and tying up those lose threads.Particularly engrossing are the chapters concerning Suspicion 'Sue', initially of her devastation at losing her husband in a gun battle with drug traffickers and her resilience and sheer gutsy determination to bring the killer to justice. Oh, and in the process saving millions of American lives from an agonising death. The Fury is gritty, exciting and at times extremely violent. It's a fast, snappy paced thriller, one which I think would make a tremendously entertaining TV series.I'd definitely recommend The Fury to fans of Lee Child and anyone wanting a cracking good read.Disclaimer: A complimentary copy of The Fury was provided by TLC BOOK TOURS & Tantor Media Inc in exchange for an honest unbiased review.

Haugen Detective Superstition “Sue” Davis, central character in Shane Gericke's new thriller, is almost too beautiful, almost too sexy, almost too fierce, and almost too smart to believe. And yet author Gericke makes her real--grieving and vulnerable and all-too-human in her conflicted loyalties. Personal tragedy pitches Sue into an undercover assignment aimed at Mexican narcotics lord Jimenez "Jimmy" Garcia--a sociopath with a soft spot for family. Playing a disaffected version of herself, a disgraced and alienated cop eager to get back at those who "betrayed" her, Sue goes to prison so that she can cozy up to Garcia's sister, with whom she develops a genuine friendship complicated by the mission to take out Jimmy. Gericke weaves in a historical subplot that adds urgency to Sue's mission. It involves a cache of doomsday weapons left over from World War II and now fallen into the hands of the drug kingpin. Can this superwoman detective and her law enforcement allies stop him before he kills on a massive scale?

This young man’s tale of island adventure, cultural immersion, and friendship is incredibly entertaining. Although claimed to be a work of fiction, the writing in this novel is resounding and descriptive. I felt as if I was in the Galapagos alongside Erhenzeller for every horseback riding, surfing, and culinary escapade. Anyone with a sense of adventure should read this. "In Hebrew," Brenda Miller writes in these lyrical, lush personal essays, "the word for God means I am what I am becoming." In this linked collection, Miller takes us on a journey from the safety of a 1960s Jewish childhood through the hazards of a young womanhood populated by shamans and rough men, and down the lonely road home to wisdom. Confronting a drunken lover on a boat far from shore, hitchhiking the Bright Angel trail through the Grand Canyon alone, subsisting on dried fruit in the forests of Northern California—Miller becomes an Everywoman in these deeply meditative stories of danger, independence, and deliverance. Brenda Miller is the author of four essay collections, including Listening Against the Stone (Skinner House Books, 2012) and Season of the Body (Sarabande Books, 2002). She also coauthored Tell It Slant: Creating, Refining, and Publishing Creative Nonfiction (McGraw Hill, 2012) and The Pen and the Bell: Mindful Writing in a Busy World (Skinner House Books, 2012). Her work has received six Pushcart Prizes. She is a professor of English and director of graduate studies at Western Washington University and serves as editor-in-chief of the Bellingham Review. Who You Will Become, by Brenda Miller

Review "Anything that spins has, paradoxically, at its core, something quite still," writes Brenda Miller in Who You Will Become, an elegant, unflinching meditation on desire and belonging. Essay by essay, section by mosaic section, in radiant, sensual prose, Miller gazes deep into a troubled past to reveal moments of grace within buttermilk donuts, spring water, and the shedding bark of a eucalyptus. Who You Will Become is a portrait of hard-won wisdom, a woman at peace with how far she has come and what it has taken to get there--a master essayist at the top of her game." --Harrison Candelaria Fletcher, author of Presentimiento: A Life In Dreams Miller's most compressed and artfully woven assemblage yet: three parts, twenty pieces, one inspired and oracular whole....."No straight line between here and there, between past and future; instead, many small rifts open between where you stand now and where you are trying to go."  In other words, this is how you make a life, and this is how you write a lyric essay, both at once.  Miller not only traces who she has become; she teaches by lyric example how to write "your way out, [how to] find the familiar stones, the ones that can lead you home." --Julie Marie Wade, author of Wishbone: A Memoir in Fractures and Small Fires: Essays "But appetites, I think, are boundless and wholly unruinable," Brenda Miller writes in her collection of short essays, Who You Will Become. Each slice of life and contemplation--from early childhood, adolescence, college years, and the present--is full of her unsatiable appetite for observation, honesty, and the body's knowledge.  --Sheila Bender, founder of writingitreal.com, author of A New Theology: Turning to Poetry in a Time of Grief.

About the Author Brenda Miller teaches in the MFA in Creative Writing and the MA in English Studies at Western Washington University. She is the author of four essay collections, including Listening Against the Stone, Blessing of the Animals, and Season of the Body She also co-authored Tell It Slant: Creating, Refining and Publishing Creative Nonfiction and The Pen and The Bell: Mindful Writing in a Busy World. By Nancoise Imagine the lyric essay as spin art: a burst of memory, a pinwheel of motion and grace, a collage of images twirled into figurative arabesques. In this collection of brief, poetic essays, Brenda Miller paints the exodus from childhood, the centrifugal force of yearning to become who we must become. Spinning swiftly through moments of solitude, separation, sadness, and the sacred, Who You Will Become accumulates, each bright drop part of a shining journey.

By Sara Stamey A powerful and meditative mosaic of life passages, small events that, assembled, create a moving portrait of the writer as a young woman moving into her adult self. Miller's prose, as always, is luminous and magical. I found pieces of myself here, too.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great book with lots to interest By Julie Haigh This is such a great idea for a book and just the sort of thing I love to read. I love all the photos included and I like the background info to the interviews rather than just the articles themselves. The author goes behind the scenes interviewing a few stars from radio/TV/personalities from the 70s. Photos are included, also photos of letters from the personality/agent/newspaper report etc. There are also a few amusing little quips thrown in. An interesting and entertaining little book. The interviewees are not just any Tom, Dick or Harry-not unknowns-there are mentions from big names such as Noel Edmonds, Tony Blackburn, Alan Freeman, Ann Aston, Esther Rantzen Gilbert O'Sullivan, Austin Mitchell-Calendar on ITV, Batley Variety Club-a place quite near me where my parents used to go every Saturday night to watch the stars of the day. Having really enjoyed Graham Higson's book ‘How Much for a Little Screw’ where he tells us many anecdotes from behind the counter in a hardware store-now Graham is going back in time and exchanging his smock for a 'cool' leather jacket and telling us what goes on behind the scenes with the celebrities. It makes excellent reading. A real treasure trove of interest for me! There's so much in it! Lots of fascinating facts and figures. On the amazon listing, there are ‘officially’ 84 pages. On a reasonably small text size I actually got 134 pages/turn overs on my Kindle Fire HDX so there was more material than I was expecting-lots of photos, letters, a nice touch getting their autograph in his autograph or visitor's book as he calls it and for him to show pics of every star's signing who he had interviewed. There are lots of snippets involving both the celebs interviewed and others who happened to be there. This is a very interesting piece put-together by Graham Higson, from his time as a freelance writer/reporter. It's taken from his audio tapes of celebrity interviews, letters, photos and magazine and newspaper articles he wrote at the time. A piece of history yet so many of these names will still be recognisable.

There were once four children who spent their summer holidays in a white house, happily situated between a sandpit and a chalkpit. One day they had the good fortune to find in the sandpit a strange creature. Its eyes were on long horns like snail's eyes, and it could move them in and out like telescopes. It had ears like a bat's ears, and its tubby body was shaped like a spider's and covered with thick soft fur—and it had hands and feet like a monkey's. It told the children—whose names were Cyril, Robert, Anthea, and Jane—that it was a Psammead or sand-fairy. (Psammead is pronounced Sammy-ad.) It was old, old, old, and its birthday was almost at the very beginning of everything. And it had been buried in the sand for thousands of years. But it still kept its fairylikeness, and part of this fairylikeness was its power to give people whatever they wished for. You know fairies have always been able to do this. Cyril, Robert, Anthea, and Jane now found their wishes come true; but, somehow, they never could think of just the right things to wish for, and their wishes sometimes turned out very oddly indeed. In the end their unwise wishings landed them in what Robert called 'a very tight place indeed', and the Psammead consented to help them out of it in return for their promise never never to ask it to grant them any more wishes, and never to tell anyone about it, because it did not want to be bothered to give wishes to anyone ever any more. At the moment of parting Jane said politely—'I wish we were going to see you again some day.'And the Psammead, touched by this friendly thought, granted the wish.

Nesbit completed her best known trilogy of fantasy books with The story of the Amulet. It returns us to the lives of the brothers and sisters we met in Five Children and It and The Phoenix and the Carpet. But the tone is darker and the freedom from adult observation is due to lonelyness rather than holiday freedoms, as was the case in the earlier novels. The children's parents are in danger of their life, and they find themselves faced with the chance to help when they meet the iracible Psammiad again. It leads them to a time travelling amulet, which might have the power to grant them their hearts desire.Much of the charm of this book comes from the realism of the children's characters. No matter that they dress in the plus fours and petticoats of the Edwardian age, their bickering and wonder in the face of magical events makes them timeless.A marvelous book, and a farewell to a familier group of children hovering on the verge of adulthood.

I suggest that anyone interested start with Five Children and It, which is even better. I would recommend this book to anyone!

The children introduced in "The Five Children and It" and seen again in "The Pheonix and the Carpet" are back once more to finish the trio. As in "The Pheonix and the Carpet", this is a travelling book. However in this book the children travel in both time and space to search for the other half of an amulet that, when joined, will give the children their heart's desire. I removed a star for a few reasons. One, out of the five books by Nesbit that I have read, this is ranked 5th. That is not to say that this was a bad book. It's just that I thought the other ones were better. Two, I like the books where the characters are granted wishes best, as in "The Five Children and It". However, I would recommend this book to anyone who likes magical happenings, time travel, and those who liked other Edith Nesbit books.

A road trip about memory, mateship and mortality.

It was late afternoon and a few of us were sitting about in the sun having a drink on my birthday when the friend I've known the longest sat down opposite and looked at me like he was going to say something serious.

He was, and he got straight to it. He had health issues, he said, in a tone that put the issues word in ironic quotes. He'd been to see his doctor the previous day. He had maybe a year, he said. Maybe a bit more.

I was so shocked by what he told me that, after an initial gasp, I said the only thing that seemed to make any sense to me in the circumstances. We should go away for a road trip, I blurted out.

He nodded as if he knew I was going to say that. Back south, he said.

Yeah, I said back to him.

South meant Southland, where our story started, 46 years earlier. And that was the end of that conversation. Within weeks the trip was all booked and ready to roll. I felt nervous.

A road trip about memory, mateship and mortality, into the heartland of a New Zealand that still exists and still surprises.

I found myself tearing up over and over again at God's miraculous love and rescue from hopelessness. Every story and chapter inspired me to let go of my fears, my past, and to put complete trust in the Lord for my future.~ Susanne Johnson, Police Special Services Wendy's life journey reminds me of the Hebrews living in Egypt in the days of Moses. They underwent traumatic experiences as helpless slaves. As they cried to God for help, God heard their groaning and sent Moses to rescue and liberate them. He protected them and exposed them to His laws as He prepared them to enter the Promised Land. It seems that is what God has done in Wendy's life! He snatched her from bondage and mercifully revealed Himself to her through His living word.
