The Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico washes a cache of doomsday weapons onto a Mexican beach: bombs filled with VX nerve gas mixed with anthrax, invented by the Nazis during World War II and perfected by the United States to use in the Cold War. The bombs soon fall into the wrong hands and create an unstoppable opponent. Only one Chicago police detective has a chance of preventing those bombs from being used on American soil.

Reeling from the recent murder of her husband as well as allegations of police misconduct, Detective Superstition "Sue" Davis is thrown into an undercover assignment. She must infiltrate the Mexican narcotics cartel responsible for the death of her husband in order to get close to the cartel's sociopathic enforcer, Jiménez "Jimmy" Garcia.

But when the entire Garcia family is killed in Mexico by a US Special Forces raid gone wrong, Garcia will stop at nothing to get vengeance, including triggering newly acquired bombs on American soil. Superstition's assignment quickly becomes more dangerous than planned as the threat of a terrorist attack looms closer.

By Jessica Higgins Reeling from the recent murder of her husband as well as allegations of police misconduct, Detective Superstition “Sue” Davis goes straight into an undercover assignment trying to infiltrate the Mexican narcotics cartel that caused her husband’s death. The leader is a sociopathic enforcer, Jimmy Garcia. When the U.S. Border Patrol finds drugs in the car of Jimmy’s sister they send her to prison. This becomes the perfect way for Sue to get close to the family and find a way to get her revenge on the man that took the life of her husband. There is a second part to her assignment, Garcia has found a large cache of doomsday weapons. Bombs filled with VX nerve gas mixed with anthrax, invented by the Nazis during World War 2 and perfected by the United States to use in the Cold War. When Garcia’s family is killed by a U.S. Special Forces raid gone wrong, he vows to get his vengeance using these weapons. There is so much story in this one book it is hard to know what to say about it. Parts of the story were great, full of tension that leapt off the page. Other parts seemed to drag the rest of the story down and bring it to a screeching halt. The main point of the story, Sue trying to get revenge for her husband’s death and stop Garcia from using the dirty bombs was done really well. The characters had depth to them and kept the story moving. Gericke did a very good job painting the picture of a cop that was grieving the loss of her family but found a release for the emotions by focusing on what needed to be done. At the turn of every page there was another threat that had to be dealt with bringing the story to a whole new level. The rest of the story focused on the bombs being made and the back and forth from the WW11 and Cold War era to present day didn’t work as well. It was hard to follow what was happening at these times that related to the rest of the story. I think these moments could have been condensed and kept the story going. Gericke weaved the story together for the most with the exception of these moments. That would be the main downfall for me with this novel.

A cracking good thriller By Sharon Actual rating: 3.5 out of 5Information as to the key points of the storyline are in the synopsis so I won't add any more as I do not want to giveaway any more of the plot line.Plot wise though there is a lot going on, a heck of a lot from the opening scenes of an offshore platform disaster in the Gulf of Mexico to the trials and tribulations of the sociopathic drugs cartel leader Jimmy Garcia and his family, chiefly his sister; we flash back to WWII and Nazi Germany to witness the development, and then the experimentation of nerve gas agents on human guinea pigs by the Japanese. Then we are brought bang up to date again with Superstition's involvement as an undercover agent.I didn't have a problem keeping up with the multitude of threads in the story, but I did wonder how Gericke would plausibly mesh them together. There was never a dull moment and Gericke does an fantastic job of keeping the action and tension flowing in perfect symbiosis and tying up those lose threads.Particularly engrossing are the chapters concerning Suspicion 'Sue', initially of her devastation at losing her husband in a gun battle with drug traffickers and her resilience and sheer gutsy determination to bring the killer to justice. Oh, and in the process saving millions of American lives from an agonising death. The Fury is gritty, exciting and at times extremely violent. It's a fast, snappy paced thriller, one which I think would make a tremendously entertaining TV series.I'd definitely recommend The Fury to fans of Lee Child and anyone wanting a cracking good read.Disclaimer: A complimentary copy of The Fury was provided by TLC BOOK TOURS & Tantor Media Inc in exchange for an honest unbiased review.

Haugen Detective Superstition “Sue” Davis, central character in Shane Gericke's new thriller, is almost too beautiful, almost too sexy, almost too fierce, and almost too smart to believe. And yet author Gericke makes her real--grieving and vulnerable and all-too-human in her conflicted loyalties. Personal tragedy pitches Sue into an undercover assignment aimed at Mexican narcotics lord Jimenez "Jimmy" Garcia--a sociopath with a soft spot for family. Playing a disaffected version of herself, a disgraced and alienated cop eager to get back at those who "betrayed" her, Sue goes to prison so that she can cozy up to Garcia's sister, with whom she develops a genuine friendship complicated by the mission to take out Jimmy. Gericke weaves in a historical subplot that adds urgency to Sue's mission. It involves a cache of doomsday weapons left over from World War II and now fallen into the hands of the drug kingpin. Can this superwoman detective and her law enforcement allies stop him before he kills on a massive scale?
