Ever dream of quitting the corporate life? The key is to lose the lock. “Annie Dike knows what it is like to escape.” -- Bob Bitchin, Cruising Outpost Magazine “Where are you going? What are you going to do? Annie, aren’t you afraid?” These are the questions they asked of me, that I asked of myself. And my answer? Not enough to let it stop me. We are all afraid to disrupt our lives, to disappoint people with our changing desires. Fear persuades us to maintain security but, for me, the monotony of my life felt like a prison of my own making. When I looked through the hole I'd chipped in my cell, I saw myself--tan, toned, bracing the bow of our boat as it crashed through crystal waves. My God I looked good! I’ll bet if I sneezed confetti would poof out. I was challenged, fulfilled, finally living, feeling and breathing in each moment. That’s when I knew I had to break out, tear my entire life to the ground and start anew.

Keys to the Kingdom: A rising young lawyer who found the key by losing the lock, by Annie Dike

About the Author I was a lawyer until I quit. Six years in the practice taught me two very important things -- 1) I love to write (while it was motions, briefs, and arguments then, I still knew I had uncovered my passion in the written word), but 2) I don't like to do it in an office. Something told me I needed to get away, to travel, to sail, to live a different day every day and write about all of it. I now write full-time and spend the majority of my days cruising our 35-foot Niagara sailboat around Florida's west coast, the ongoing adventures of which I chronicle on my sailing blog, www.havewindwilltravel.com, and sailing books available on Amazon. I hope you lose yourself in my stories, find yourself in my characters and relish every page. I will keep writing and sailing regardless. It beats the practice at least. Enjoy!

A great book for anyone who wants to change their life By Jonathan I am a sailor some some experience, and like the author I left a successful corporate life to sail. This book is an easy read, and she writes well. "Acknowledging my unhappiness was the easy part. The actual doing of something to change it was where I got stuck". Now there is more in this book than going sailing. It is about the pursuit of happiness, and the costs and rewards.

Nate This is the second book by Annie Dike I have in my Kindle. While I have not completed Keys to the Kingdom yet, I'm sure to have it finished over the Christmas holidays.Annie's writing style easily pulls you in to the story as if you were actually there.I highly recommend Keys to the Kingdom to anyone, even sailors. ;-)

McDonough As an avid sailor and reader of anything on the topic, I was disappointed that this tale had less on the topic and way too much on her disenchantment with the practice of law. I'm thrilled she finally saw beyond her own illusions, jumped off the hamster wheel, and realized happiness comes from pursing the heart's desire more than chasing the expectations of others. But did we have to give birth to this revelation every other chapter? And with her purported love of writing, it was hard to get past the endlessly consistent grammatical errors with every attempt at utilizing the pronouns "me" and "I" or the use of malapropisms like "all intense and purpose." Alas, she did learn to guard the halyard-or keep it clipped at all times. Otherwise t'was a humbly humorous tale depicting the best kind of adventure.

After raising three husbands and a son, a hard-charging divorcee flees the suburban confines of Washington, D.C., for sunny Provence, where she falls in love with the local wines, a younger man and la vie boheme. Marcia Muir Mitchell tells all in "French Toast," a nakedly honest, sumptuously descriptive memoir about her often humorous, sometimes heart-breaking struggles to build a new life for herself in a picturesque village split between the old world and the new. Mitchell's affection for the arts inspired the move along with her love for an artist. Although she falls for his work before they meet, he more than meets her expectations. The relationship, however, alternates between rocky and sublime, as does Mitchell's on-going effort to adapt to the demands of a May-December romance. Though she spends time at her easel, Mitchell primarily paints with words. French cuisine, architecture, scenery–whatever meets her eye–come to vivid life as do the panoply of characters who dwell in this quaint corner of Southern France. Ultimately “French Toast” is much more than a memoir. It's also a love story, a travelogue and a cautionary reminder that one must suffer for one's art.

French Toast, by Marcia Muir MItchell

About the Author Marcia Muir Mitchell, an independent writer and creative director, traded a successful career in advertising for the life of an artist—sometimes a starving one—in the south of France. Her memoir, French Toast revisits her exploits, both romantic and enterprising, in the ancient Provencal village of Saignon. Marcia grew up in Atlanta and went to Brenau College for Women in Gainesville, Ga. She was reared to be a Southern Belle, but her parents’ stories and pictures of their French travels caught her fancy and after three husbands and seven jobs, she closed her business in Washington, D.C., and opened a new chapter in her life. Fourteen years later, Marcia returned to the U.S. with her cat, Raoul, and settled in Los Angeles near her son Ben Feldman, an actor. She adopted a rescue dog, Zoe. Though Zoe and Raoul speak different languages, they have no trouble understanding each other.

French Toast brought back good and funny memories of that time and fills in the gap since visiting with Marcia in her Potomac, Md. home. As I would expect, French Toast is well written. It is worth the read even if you don't know Marcia personally. I plan to give the book as gifts to two friends.

Full disclosure, I actually know Marcia & stayed in the village and setting where most of the book takes place. She has rendered events, environs and people with a sharp, honest, literary eye and every word she writes is true; I witnessed it firsthand. If you are nurturing a dream of life in a lovely Provencal village, read this first!

In the tradition of Native Speaker and The Family Fang, Matthew Salesses weaves together the tangled threads of identity, love, growing up, and relationships in his stunning first novel, The Hundred-Year Flood. This beautiful and dreamlike debut follows 22-year-old Tee as he escapes to Prague in the wake of his uncle's suicide and the aftermath of 9/11. Tee tries to convince himself that living in a new place will mean a new identity and a chance to shed the parallels between him and his adopted father. His life intertwines with Pavel Picasso, a painter famous for revolution; Katka, his equally alluring wife; and Picasso's partner - a giant of a man with an American name. In the shadow of a looming flood that comes every one hundred years, Tee contemplates his own place in life as both mixed and adopted and as an American in a strange land full of heroes, myths, and ghosts.

61 of 63 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful Prose, Disjointed Timeline By Carol Scarr The Hundred-Year Flood tells the story of a young man, Tee, who was born to a Korean mother and an American father. In late December, 2001, a few weeks after his uncle commits suicide, Tee moves from Boston to Prague. On New Year's Eve, he meets an artist and his wife, Pavel and Katka, and they invite him to come to their house so the artist can paint him.Throughout the story, Tee reflects on fitting in, on belonging. He's one of the few Asians in Prague. Over the course of weeks, he grows closer to Katka. Eventually he learns the truth about his adoption and gains insight into the relationships between his parents, aunt, and uncle. The prose is finely crafted, and contains many surprising, yet apt descriptions, such as "merciless appetites." One of my favorite passages is the explanation for why Tee chooses Prague:"He chose Prague for its resistance. A city where, for thousands of years, private lives had withstood the oppression of empires."The story is told with a disjointed timeline, starting with Tee in Massachusetts General Hospital having suffered a serious head wound. We gradually learn what happened to him and the events around the devastating flood that wiped out parts of Prague, but if you like your tales told in chronological order, this one may not be for you. Also, the e-book is "not yet enabled for searching," so if that feature is important to you, you may want to wait.

The story of being a stranger in Prague brought back strong memories of my time living in Basel, Switzerland and always feeling out of place. The flood seemed more of a dream than real; yet the story of the seal is stuck in my head.I chose this book as part of the free Amazon book of the month. It's not a book I would've ever chosen on my own but I appreciate the opportunity to be exposed to new authors.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I enjoyed it By Pam Hayes The complexity of the cultural threads was impressive. I found that the story telling was almost too elusive. I was often confused about whether we were in the actual story, a flashback, or an imagining. I would suggest being a bit more straightforward and not quite as clever. I was particularly appreciative of how the relationships were resolved and finally woven together clearly.

This is the story of my reincarnation. The year was 1933, sometime in May, and I was entering into this new birth. I had made my contract, and now I was back on my way in. I had to decide where I was going to be born. I decided that the United States would be a good place, because what I was looking for was total freedom, which I hadn't had in many previous lifetimes. So I was looking for a mother or father who would provide this opportunity. That was my greatest desire. The rest would follow.

As a bodybuilder of nearly 50 years, I really could not get enough of the author's stories concerning the early days of bodybuilding. Names like Marvin Eder, Steve Reeves, Dick Dubois and Reg Park literally jump off the pages in the author's first-hand accounts. His anecdotes about working with Mae West add another layer to the incredible life that Dominick Juliano has led. These stories alone are worth the price of admission! The additional stories throughout the book are frosting on the cake. The author's quest for spiritual enlightenment was very moving and incredibly inspirational. Do yourself and favor and get this book!

Beautiful Book By Stacey Similar to seeing a Pixar movie that engages both children and adults, this book can be read solely for the entertainment of a fascinating, adventurous life or more importantly for the wisdom and teachings that are provided. Many of these chapters should be read and reread again. This is a very powerful book that not only entertains but most importantly encourages awareness and consciousness.

Free PDF Ebook Bleeding Orange: Fifty Years of Blind Referees, Screaming Fans, Beasts of the East, and Syracuse Basketball, by Jim Boeheim, Jack McCallum

In this candid autobiography, Syracuse head coach and long time college basketball fixture Jim Boeheim reflects on his life, his teachers, and the game he loves.

Jim Boeheim walked onto the Syracuse campus as a freshman in 1963 . . . and never walked off. A man who has been written off at various stages of his career and criticized for being disagreeable, Boeheim has experienced it all—triumph, despair, redemption; controversy, heartbreak, and scandal; championships, epic disappointments, colorful personalities, NCAA investigations.

His combative personality helped ignite what was arguably the most competitive college basketball conference ever: the Big East of the 1980s, when he and Syracuse battled with Big John Thompson of Georgetown, roly-poly Rollie Massimino of Villanova, feisty Jim Calhoun of Connecticut, and beloved Looie Carnesecca of St. John’s, turning the Big East into a Coaches Conference and the Best Show in College Basketball. Boeheim talks about those days and the coming battles with powerhouses North Carolina and Duke, now that Syracuse has joined the Atlantic Coast Conference.

From his association with Syracuse greats Dave Bing (a college teammate), Pearl Washington, and Derrick Coleman, to the Olympics—where he coached players such as LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and Kevin Durant—Boeheim has learned many lessons that have helped his team and continue to encourage him now as he nears seventy.

His unprecedented fifty-year career as a player, assistant, head coach and icon has given him unique insight into coaching and the college game, knowledge he now shares.

Bleeding Orange: Fifty Years of Blind Referees, Screaming Fans, Beasts of the East, and Syracuse Basketball, by Jim Boeheim, Jack McCallum

From the Back Cover

In six decades as a player, assistant coach, and the head man on the bench for Syracuse University's basketball program, Jim Boeheim is synonymous with the blood and thunder of East Coast hoops. In Bleeding Orange, Boeheim recounts for the first time all the pleasures and perils of a career spent battling the "Beasts of the Big East," the NCAA, and his own fear of failure.

Coach Boeheim has always been full of life, and his combative nature helped ignite what was arguably the most fascinating and competitive college basketball conference ever—the Big East of the 1980s. Boeheim's battles with fellow coaches turned the Big East into the best show in college basketball.

Combining a real-time, inside-the-program account of the 2013–14 season—Syracuse's first in the ACC—with a narrative of his most cherished memories of coming-of-age on the Syracuse campus and of coaching two Olympic gold medal–winning teams, Bleeding Orange is a must-read both for Syracuse fans and anyone who calls himself or herself an aficionado of college basketball history.

About the Author

Jim Boeheim is the second-winningest coach in college basketball history behind Mike Krzyzewski. He has been elected to the coaches wing of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and has been the head coach of the Syracuse Orangemen for nearly forty years.

Jack McCallum is the author of ten books, including the New York Times bestseller Dream Team. He is a recipient of the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for excellence in basketball writing.

His unique perspective as perhaps one of the most, if not the most, loyal guys in sports, is not only entertaining but informative as well. The coach provides a very interesting look at not only his life as a player and coach at SU, but the his insights into sports, particularly college sports, the Olympics, education and teaching kids. If you're a fan of SU, a fan of college basketball, a fan of college sports, a fan of sports, or just a fan of a guy who, for all his life, has not only talked the talk but more importantly walked the walk you'll enjoy this book.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A must for any 'Cuse Nation fan!! By Sin City Shooter To read the behind the scenes stories of games and seasons you have watched and digested with complete fervor is a real treat. Coach Boeheim has emotionally and effectively pulled back the curtain just enough to give the armchair coach/lunatic Syracuse fans a look at all of the blood, sweat, and fears (that one's for you, coach) that a top tier College basketball program endures from season to season. The Big East stories were riveting, and the comparison to the ACC 'Gentleman's Club' seemed spot on. I am Syracuse class of '82, and my wife and I have been die hard SU fans before we met, and ever since. We watch every game, and read every story if it involves the Orange. We BLEED Orange, and always will. We wish the Coach continued amazing success, and will shed more than a tear when his final game is coached. Syracuse will be in excellent hands if Hop is selected next.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Just What I Was Waiting For By Lost Girl I couldn't wait for Jim Boeheim to release this memoir. Finally, basketball in his own words. Jim is not only an amazing coach, but a former player and a man. who lives and breathes the sport. Coaches always say that every moment he is not coaching, Jim Boeheim is watching a game. He loves the sport, and it shows in this book. I loved reading his stories about his former players, the rivalry between SU and Georgetown, and the dedication of Jim Boeheim Court. The only thing I felt was left out were details pertaining to his personal life. Of course, this book was meant to be about basketball, but I still wish there were more personal details. I would have loved to have read more about his children, as well as his relationships with the other coaches. There were a few stories, but I wish that there were more. However, overall the book was a great read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The only sad part is knowing that retirement may be looming. Like so many fans, I don't want to think about Syracuse Basketball without Jim Boeheim...

‘It’s incredible to think he came from a small village in the Czech Republic to appear on the world stage as an international footballer. The odds of that happening are astronomical. And that is what makes Pavel’s story such an interesting read.’ Alan Shearer The son of a woodcutter and middle child of five, Pavel had to overcome several challenging obstacles before finally proving his worth in life as a man and footballer on the domestic and international stage. This isn't a typical footballer’s tale of rags to riches; it covers life as a soldier in an Eastern Bloc state under Communist rule where he nearly shot his general and of tales involving the Mafia, guns, drugs and corruption. Life as a young professional at Newcastle was not without difficulty. Kevin Keegan tried to replace him with several others; never totally convinced by the keeper he inherited from Ossie Ardiles. Kenny Dalglish was even less convinced and the pair clashed violently prior to an FA Cup semi-final when the Scot went back on his word. His national side fell to a Golden Goal at Euro 96 and he clashed with Dutch superstars Edgar Davids and Dennis Bergkamp at Euro 2000. He was also involved in a fierce exchange with Belgium boss Robert Waseige and referee Anders Frisk as the Czech Republic were eliminated from World Cup in controversial circumstances in 2001. This is a unique and heart-warming account of one of football’s good guys: full of comedy, tragedy and heartache that will make the reader laugh and cry in equal measures. ‘His service to the toon was a great journey for him. Normally, you only get Geordie folk heroes, so for the fans to take him as one of their own must have been a great feeling… plus, he never let them down. Well done, Pav!’ Gazza

It does struggle a bit to go into any real depth or quality about the fantastic era being the 90s in Newcastle. Pav does come across as a bit of a victim and the reassurance of his being a worthy keeper is repetitive. Still great to get some blast from a great past.

Really sad he never got to fulfill his dream of coaching at Newcastle, but he won't be forgotten. The style is quite simple, but warm and with a real sense of humour and humility

I'm really impressed by how much Alex Pitt knows about the subject of survival. Throughout the book there are so many great tips that I would definitely use if I was ever stuck in the wilderness. I also love the format of the book and how easy he makes it to understand. If a second part was ever published I would definitely be interested in it, but this one alone covers so much information that there almost doesn't have to be any more.

Good intro to the essentials By Lucidity I lived in Maine for a few years, so it goes without saying that I have experienced my fair share of both camping and hiking trips. That being said, I still find it very important to always brush up on the essentials that, in my opinion, EVERY hiker and camper should be competent of – regardless of where they’re going or what kind of person they are. So, I did go into this book with plenty of prior survival knowledge with the intention of merely having a refresher, but was quite surprised to find that I learned a few tricks (the sections about the beehives and using ice to magnify was especially new info for me)In summary, it’s a pretty good intro for a beginners, but you should always continue expanding your knowledge (the author even states this). I do think that the book should be longer and some of the more essential survival tactics should be elaborated upon further. Maybe include environment-specific examples?

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very Cool Tips to Survival By Nneka Gunn I love hiking and camping, but I wouldn't say that I have ever been an expert at survival. I got this book to help me be more prepared when I'm out in the wild, especially after seeing the movie, The Edge.Alex Pitt covers everything from making a fire, creating rescue signals, forging for food, finding a water source, and even getting your bearings without a compass. One of my favorite tips in the book was building a fire from a lense of ice. I have seen it done in the movies, but I never knew that it really worked. Another handy tip was knowing that ants usually build their mounds on the south side of a tree, so you will know where south is and be able to navigate better. This really is a Dummies Guide to Survival and I feel better equipped to tackle the wild on my next trip.

It's my Cape Town, seen through the distortion of alcohol and the paranormal. I also loved the references to a more traditional local story.

And I've never come away from visiting with her without the sense that there's so much more to life than the daily ruts. We are all handicapped in one way or another, if we'll own it. Though Jobah has struggled with physical limitations that many cannot imagine, and has learned how to surmount many of them in amazing ways, her mind and her intellect excel. Not by accident, though. She's cultivated her intellect and strengthened her spirit by habitual effort. "By the grace of God and our own diligent effort" is the advice she so often cheerfully gives. In this book she shares stories from her life. She was born with a congenital form of osteoporosis that made her bones very fragile at a young age. She grew up with pain and the threat of limited mobility, and yet she learned how to get around and be active in spite of the risks. Her zest for life, avid curiosity, and downright courage are all shown in this book. She shares the influences that shaped her and some of the people along the way who impacted her life, or were impacted by her life. There are a lot more of the latter than she knows. She has truly made life an adventure. She also lets you into her heart, and how she's felt about appearing physically limited in a world where people take their physical abilities as matter of course. She is one of the world's truly beautiful people. The story of her life, in this book, is so engaging. She's had so many unique experiences. The energy, the positive-ness, the gift of her life is beyond question by anyone who knows her. As you read her story may you be inspired as well.

Yei Theodora Ozaki was an early 20th-century translator of Japanese short stories and fairy tales. Her translations were fairly liberal but have been popular, and were reprinted several times after her death.According to “A Biographical Sketch” by Mrs. Hugh Fraser, included in the introductory material to Warriors of old Japan, and other stories, Ozaki came from an unusual background. She was the daughter of Baron Ozaki, one of the first Japanese men to study in the West, and Bathia Catherine Morrison, daughter of William Morrison, one of their teachers. Her parents separated after five years of marriage, and her mother retained custody of their three daughters until they became teenagers. At that time, Yei was sent to live in Japan with her father, which she enjoyed. Later she refused an arranged marriage, left her father’s house, and became a teacher and secretary to earn money. Over the years, she traveled back and forth between Japan and Europe, as her employment and family duties took her, and lived in places as diverse as Italy and the drafty upper floor of a Buddhist temple. All this time, her letters were frequently misdelivered to the unrelated Japanese politician Yukio Ozaki, and his to her. In 1904, they finally met, and soon

A Child's Treasury of Japanese Fairy Tales By Zack Davisson Originally published in 1903, Yei Theodora Ozaki's translation of Sadanami Sanjin's collection of Japanese fairy tales has been the introduction of many a young child into the legends and fables of old Japan across the years. Definitely not a scholarly reference or valuable research tool for folktale researchers, Ozaki unabashedly re-crafted some of the stories, translating loosely and adding in elements of unrelated tales, in order to make them more enjoyable and understandable for Western children. She even gave Urashimataro a happy ending! There is something delightfully romantic about translations from this era, due to the unfamiliarity with Japanese culture at the time. Terms that would not be translated today, like "oni" and "samurai", are rendered as "ogre" and "knight" and other English equivalents. While unauthentic, this makes the stories more approachable by young children who have a mind for fantasy but haven't yet graduated to Japanese Studies. While far from a picture book, artist Kakuzo Fujiyama contributed 66 beautiful drawings to illustrate the 22 tales. Unfortunately, all the illustrations are reproduced in black-and-white, instead of the original color plates included in the original pressings. Many of the stories here are familiar with anyone even slightly interested in Japanese folklore. "Momotaro, or the Story of the Son of a Peach, "The Story of Urashima Taro, the Fisher Lad", "Kintaro the Golden Boy" and "The Ogre of Rashomon". Along with these, there are rarer tales that I haven't seen in any other Japanese fairy tale collection. "The Stones of Five Colors and the Empress Jokwa", "The Sagacious Monkey and the Boar" and "How and Old Man Lost his Wren" were all new to me.

Not well formatted for the Kindle By Amazon Customer the stories are wonderful. a few of them match some of the stoies we heard while living in Okinawa with the military.HOWEVER, I cannot give the Kindle version a 5 star like I would like to, because the formatting is absolutely horrendous.

JAPANESE FAIRY TALES by Yei Theodora Ozaki By MOTU Review Japanese Fairy Tales, also known as The Japanese Fairy Book, is a 1908 collection of traditional fables and folktales compiled and translated by Yei Theodora Ozaki. As I understand it, this is a somewhat liberal translation; accuracy to the source material has obviously been sacrificed to a certain extent for the sake of accessibility. Interestingly, words that would not be translated today are translated here for the sake of the Western audience ("samurai," for example, is translated "knight"). Many of these stories are not concise - they tend to meander - and some end rather abruptly. Without substantial familiarity with the original material, it's difficult to determine how much of this is the stories themselves and how much is Ozaki's doing, but I suspect the latter is more responsible. These stories are, nevertheless, mostly quite enjoyable, and the differences and similarities with Western fairy tales are particularly interesting. (Wicked stepmothers, apparently, are a source of plot conflict the world over.)Many of these stories are grim and violent, of the degree of the original un-sanitized Grimm Brothers' tales. There are vicious revenge stories here, and the ones involving animals bring to mind Tom and Jerry (or, perhaps more accurately, Itchy and Scratchy, never mind Happy Tree Friends), even with some obvious sanitizing ("The Farmer and the Badger" is a notable example). Many stories do not have happy endings. They certainly aren't all for small children.Accuracy aside, Japanese Fairy Tales is a nice little collection of stories, and a decent introduction to Japanese folklore.

Mirsad reviews some very important tips like "The Offside Law", contesting every ball in play, overcoming physical limitations like strength, the art of playing deep in the back, the mechanics of tackling, adapting to changes in the field, positioning yourself optimally and much more.Mirsad presents the game in a folksy conversational style which is interesting and emulates real life situations. This is an important book to read if you intend to play the role of a soccer defender on the field of play!

His voice is very much a personal and open one.Two stories I found outstanding. One about the difficulty of trying to do political work in an unfamiliar country. The difficulty and gentle humour was well-combined. As he journeys to Ukraine, again for the work of an activist, yet one who has family there his insightful statement about the awkwardness of close ties yet living in different realities will resonate with many. Looking forward to more stories from East of the wall.

All children, except one, grow up. They soon know that they will grow up, and the way Wendy knew was this. One day when she was two years old she was playing in a garden, and she plucked another flower and ran with it to her mother. I suppose she must have looked rather delightful, for Mrs. Darling put her hand to her heart and cried, 'Oh, why can't you remain like this for ever!' This was all that passed between them on the subject, but henceforth Wendy knew that she must grow up. You always know after you are two. Two is the beginning of the end.

Peter and Wendy, by J. M. Barrie

Amazon.com Review "All children, except one, grow up." Thus begins a great classic of children's literature that we all remember as magical. What we tend to forget, because the tale of Peter Pan and Neverland has been so relentlessly boiled down, hashed up, and coated in saccharine, is that J.M. Barrie's original version is also witty, sophisticated, and delightfully odd. The Darling children, Wendy, John, and Michael, live a very proper middle-class life in Edwardian London, but they also happen to have a Newfoundland for a nurse. The text is full of such throwaway gems as "Mrs. Darling first heard of Peter Pan when she was tidying up her children's minds," and is peppered with deliberately obscure vocabulary including "embonpoint," "quietus," and "pluperfect." Lest we forget, it was written in 1904, a relatively innocent age in which a plot about abducted children must have seemed more safely fanciful. Also, perhaps, it was an age that expected more of its children's books, for Peter Pan has a suppleness, lightness, and intelligence that are "literary" in the best sense. In a typical exchange with the dastardly Captain Hook, Peter Pan describes himself as "youth... joy... a little bird that has broken out of the egg," and the author interjects: "This, of course, was nonsense; but it was proof to the unhappy Hook that Peter did not know in the least who or what he was, which is the very pinnacle of good form." A book for adult readers-aloud to revel in--and it just might teach young listeners to fly. (Ages 5 and older) --Richard Farr

From School Library Journal Grade 3-7-- A pleasure to view, read, and hold, this new edition of an old favorite deserves space in every collection. From jacket painting, to cover (with Tinker Bell embossed in gold), to endpapers (dark maps of Neverland), Gustafson's artwork opens doors to glimpses of old friends and to new interpretations. Fifty oil paintings reveal expressive, changing characters. Peter Pan is dewy-cheeked, spry, wicked. Maternal Wendy is tender, then stoic. Even Hook is at times downcast. The Indians, proud and handsome, avoid stereotype. Masterly composition and use of light create dramatic full-page illustrations, accompanied by cameos of ordinary objects (kite, bear, tea kettle). Compared to Hague's illustrations for Peter Pan (Holt, 1987), which were dark and surreal, these are light and vital. Handsome bookmaking, Barrie's text, and Gustafson's pictures combine to breathe new life into Peter Pan's old shadow. --Carolyn Noah, Central Mass. Regional Library System, Worcester, MACopyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews An unusually large, attractive, unabridged edition with dozens of full-page illustrations and smaller vignettes. In style, Gustafson's lusty oil paintings of the pirates are akin to N. C. Wyeth's, though they have more the flavor of compelling dramatic play than real menace. His slim, round-faced, rosy children and cozy interiors are closer to Wyeth's gifted student, Jessie Wilcox Smith, while the ethereal yet mischievous fairy folk recall Rackham. This is not to suggest that the result is merely derivative, in the manner of Michael Hague; Gustafson is a talented craftsman who skillfully melds his references to past greats to create an appropriately traditional style that has enough of a contemporary aura (especially in the characterizations) for broad popular appeal. An endpaper map of ``The Neverland'' and meticulous renditions of intriguing details add to the drama and fun. A perfect gift for a family that reads aloud. I cried at the end of happiness. A very deep book for children and much more education than most children books. It was also more touching and emotional . most books, even good books are not as worth buying as this one. I hope you have found this review useful and I would very highly recommend this book.

Burke Yes, there is darkness in Peter Pan - and in Alice, too, and in The Wizard of Oz - and certainly in Felix Salton's Bambi. These books, while written for young people, and which may be described as fantasy, have real plots and real characters who are not perfect. Peter Pan is selfish and stubborn as well as charming because children are not angels - they are little humans. Alice is highly critical of the adults in her dream world - adults who act very arbitrarily and often foolishly, as adults often do. Bambi is about the effects of human cruelty on animals; it deals with death and pain. One of the indications that these are good books, and not merely children's books, is that they can be read at different stages of life with new layers of understanding. You don't have to outgrow them, and they are better than many a book written for adults. The 'real' Pan and Alice and Bambi may not be suitable for the very youngest children, but please don't deprive your children culturally by never giving them anything but Disney's cutesy interpretations. For one thing, Barrie and Salton and Carroll were great writers who used words beautifully and had insightand feeling. Children deserve art as much as adults.

It has been passed down from generation to generation but it all started with one man, J. M. Barrie. When anyone tells the story of Peter Pan most adults don't think it is suitable for them. They think that it is simply a children's story and always will be. However, Barrie made sure that this story would be appropriate for all ages. Some of the language might be a bit difficult for the youngest range but the context helps to figure out a funny word or two. It appeals to the older range because of the layers it conceals. Behind each game they play is a message. Hidden under each smile Wendy gives to Peter is her hidden kiss. However, this story relates mostly to teenagers as they are going through the stage of growing up. Just days before I read Peter Pan I thought of how nice it would be to be free of homework and school. I thought how wonderful it would be to grow up and be independent. After reading this story, and seeing it exactly how Barrie told it, I don't want to grow up as much as Peter Pan and Wendy don't want to. I first heard the story, from seeing the movie, at a very young age, probably around the time I was 2 or 3. Disney tried hard to incorporate everything from the book but they didn't get every meaning or all the symbolism. For example, Mrs. Darling and Wendy Darling both have a hidden kiss. This kiss is hidden under the right hand corner of their mouths and only their true love can find it. Because Mr. Darling can't find Mrs. Darling's kiss, perhaps Barrie is trying to say that although she loves Mr. Darling dearly, he isn't her true love. Barrie fills his book with the perfect amount of detail and color. Children don't get bored because there is too much and adults don't need any more. At one point in the story, Barrie writes about the adventures at the lagoon. "If you shut your eyes and are a lucky one, you may see at times a shapeless pool of lovely pale colours suspended in the darkness; then if you squeeze your eyes tighter, the pool begins to take shape, and the colours become so vivid that with another squeeze they must go on fire." It is work like this that captures the reader and makes them never put the book down. The action and the drama are another reason such a wide age range is attached to this story. The lost boys go on countless raids and enticing adventures that children can only dream about. The love story between Peter and Wendy thickens throughout the entire book and we don't know till the end whether the Darlings will return home to England or stay in Neverland forever. Barrie does such an incredible job with the characters I felt I had met each one personally. John and Michael are as adorable as ever, Captain Hook as evil, Tinkerbell as envious, Peter as cocky and Wendy as in love. Though the title expresses that the story is about Peter Pan, I think one of Barrie's hidden messages was that it was really Wendy's story. Peter Pan can meet many more pirates and have many more adventures but Wendy only had that one time with him. She could only be his mother, or possibly his only love, once in her life. She was supposed to go back to Neverland every spring to do Peter's spring cleaning but he forgot almost every year. Barrie might have been trying to show how forgetful little boys are. He also might have been trying to show Peter's denial that Wendy might grow up. If Peter didn't go back then Wendy might not grow up. If he didn't go back he wouldn't be reminded that he lost the love of his life. Barrie did a phenomenal job with this story. His ideas make you wonder why we have to grow up and why none of us have ever been able to see Tink's glow, outside of our dreams. This book is suitable for all ages and the only thing that could make it even better were if we could be in the story ourselves.

A sad true short story By Valerie Caraotta Vincent Hope, Author and son, writes this true story which mainly depicts the happenings between his parents. Born in Lagos Nigeria, The reader will come to an understanding that Vincent has high regards for his mother who began as a devoted Catholic and later turned toward Pentecostalism where she would deepen her faith in Jesus Christ. He describes his dad is a hard worker that served in the Nigerian Air Force and always had a heart to support his family. He would also plow and cultivate land during farming season as well as raise animals for money. They would move to Kano where they lived in a compound consisting of several blocks of apartments with central kitchens and toilets on each floor. It was there that he would experience his parents often fighting due to complaints from in-laws, the affairs that would happen, and financial pressure. His father would announce unexpectedly to Vincent and his siblings that he and his wife are no longer married. Without much support his mother would move out of the house. This grieved Vincent very much and when he got older he eventually left home. His mother moved out because his father had another woman that would move in. This relationship did not last long and his mother would have to appeal to his dads relatives to come back and eventually did.Unfortunately his dad would get another woman pregnant and have her move in along with his current wife. "The entry of the strange woman as my mum will always call her, made life a living hell for my mum." Here in America it would seem unheard of for a man to bring two wives under the same roof but it did exist there and even today as Vincent concludes his book, his mom is much older but is still having to persevere with the other woman that now has two children from Vincent's father. This is a very short book and the heart of this author was to produce this work with any proceeds going towards his mother. It is written in simple language and can easily be read in one sitting. Because of its brevity and matter-of-fact plot I give it three stars. Had it of been more developed with more annotation of his parents or his upbringing with greater detail, I would then have been more apt to give it a higher rating.
