“The Other Side of Me” is a true story about a Marine who served three tours of duty in Vietnam during the years of 1966-1970, D.L. ‘Tex’ Swafford. Tex, as his comrades called him, was not the same man he once was upon returning home from Nam. No, that man died over there with thousands of other soldiers. He was a casualty of war, sent home with a broken mind and invisible wounds that were impossible to mend. “The Other Side of Me” is his story of both strength and struggle during the war and after his return home. It’s a look inside a man, a war veteran who suffered from extreme PTSD for many decades, for the remainder of his life. The hope is that his memoir will give insight and hope to current and future generations of combat veterans. Semper Fidelis.

By Scott Overton When he isn't writing horror fiction, Costello can write thrillers with the best of them. As often as all of us have wondered "what if" about winning a lottery, "what if" you were on the way to collect your winnings and your trip to dreamland turned into a nightmare? Sean Costello has imagined it for you.One of my favorite things about Finders Keepers is that it's not about massive global confrontations, nuclear weapons, and politics. It's about ordinary people in extraordinary trouble--the kind of frightening situation that can come out of the regular elements of life gone horribly wrong. So you really identify with the characters and get caught up in the story. Read and enjoy!

32 of 34 people found the following review helpful. Ok story By Twostory Follow the lottery ticket as it moves from winner to thief, to thief. There were a lot of extreme and nutty characters. Most of the cops were crooked killers. A bit of a quick ending. And what happened to the lottery security official (Tasker) that had such a large part early on - then completely disappeared from the story? If this was a movie it would probably be rated hard R for language.

The Dream Becomes a Nightmare By Nyssa When retiree Keith Whipple realizes that the lottery numbers that he's been playing for years finally have come up for a ten million dollar jackpot, he immediately rushes out to start purchasing presents for his extended family. Next thing on the to-do list is to head down to the main Lottery Commission office located four hours drive away to cash in the ticket and make everything official. Keith and his daughter Kate head to the big city in a hired limo loaded down with the many purchased gifts to do just that. Slick roads and an out-of-control tanker truck conspire against that plan as they find themselves not only crashed by the side of the snowy road, but robbed by a passerby who unknowingly takes a wallet worth $10million.First off, I loved the main characters in this book. Keith the movie-loving and doting dad, Kate his movie-loving daughter, and Steve the young policeman who was a first responder to the accident scene, all were likable people who the reader could relate to and cheer on. There were bad guys a-plenty as well, as the lucky lottery ticket passed from one set of unscrupulous hands to another. The variety of the bad guys brings things over to the seamy side of life. The reactions of each one as they realize what they are holding and their schemes to try to cash the ticket in without being caught out as a thief run through the range of cruel to comedic.A subplot in the book dealt with several policemen, most of them trying to do an honest job and one in particular who wasn't. But can even the squeeky cleanest cop resist the prize of a lottery jackpot?Highly recommended.

An intimate, powerful portrait of Louise Bourgeois in the final years of her life

From 2008 to 2010 Louise Bourgeois allowed Alex Van Gelder into her private world―her studio and home―and indulged his lens, while she worked, rested, waited―mischievous, or lost in thought, weary of decrepitude, raging, defiant to the end. She fills the camera with her presence. It is a profound portrait of an artist of the utmost consequence and a piercing study of extreme age. Louise Bourgeois was one of the last surviving artists of the high modernist era, and her early work anticipated what would come in the late modern and postmodern eras, including minimalism, installation art, and body art. However, she did not achieve fame until after her seventieth year, discovered and heralded by a new generation. Once discovered, her reputation grew in the 1980s, ’90s, and 2000s with an array of major international exhibitions and a burst of creativity. Throughout, her art is confessional, psychological, and fraught with fear, anger, and sexuality. Van Gelder’s collaborative portrait is in many ways a message from Bourgeois to the world, her chosen epitaph, scrawled in her own way by gesture, expression, and posture. Despite the frailty and decrepitude of her near one hundred years, she defies her vulnerability. 81 color photographs

Review “This collaboration serves as a primal and poignant extension of Bourgeois’s art. Her theatrical spirit seems to defy the incredible frailty of her frame. These photographs are a record of one of our great modern artists, fading in body, still inventing with fervor while she can.” (The New Yorker Photo Booth)

Anthropophagy - humans eating their fellow-humans - creates a curious blend of revulsion and fascination in the ‘civilised’ Western world. When the perpetrator is a murderer - most commonly a sadistic serial killer - the crime not only shocks but it causes bewilderment. With this 2015 update of her comprehensive 1993 study of cannibalistic killers, Moira Martingale expands her original research about the making of such monsters. Cannibal Killers tracked the phenomenon from five hundred years ago with the notorious Sawney Bean to those whose names became a byword for horror as the twentieth century waned, such as Jeffrey Dahmer. In this updated version, we see that in the twenty-first century cannibals who thirst for human flesh and blood are still around, and alarmingly, they have moved online. Moira Martingale is an author and a former journalist and columnist for national and regional newspapers. Cannibal Killers has been translated into several languages and is widely used as a research tool by criminology degree students. The author’s interest in humanity’s dark underbelly stems from her studies of clinical and abnormal psychology during her first degree. She also has a doctorate in Gothic Literature.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Very well put together By A Customer I disagree with the negative reviews (except about the "harrowing" pictures promise on the cover being bogus, but that is not the author's fault.)I found her discussion of cannibalism in general to be interesting and enlightening. The psychology is not boring, but engaging. True, if you want in depth on each killer's story, this is not the book for you (it is only about 300 pages), but as an overview, it rules. Also, I love her(?) [Moira] theory on the origins of vampires and werewolves.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Gives False Info By C. Stesen I'm about half way through this book and some of the info is incorrect and is leaving me thinking "maybe i shouldn't finish it because of the false info". I caught most of it the Ed Gein Chapter. Ed Gein has explained quite a few times that he was not a Cannibal. He explained he liked to wear the skin and use the bones to make items but said he never ate any of the bodies from the graves he dug up or the recently killed ones. Also The book says His father died, than his mother, than his brother in a forest fire. I've read almost everywhere else that his father died, than his brother in a barn fire that Ed may have caused. This put a strain on his mother and she died a year later. Then he boarded up her room and most of the house. Its just little facts like this that make me think the author may have written the book just so she could release a book. It doesnt seem like her heart was in it like the other books i've read about cannibals and serial killers. I would say spend the extra money to get a book that goes more into detail and gives facts instead of guesses...

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. It was disturbing yet held my attention throughout the end. By A Customer The book described in detail about Dahmer, Gein and others. It was extremely graphic but the need for that was apparent. It was not glorifing what was done. It was scaring you to death. Things like this could happen to anyone anywhere. I can't say it was an enjoyable book. Nothing of that matter can be "enjoyable" but it did hold my interest. I could not put it down. When I did it was minutes later I'd pick it back up,

Spectacular photos of America's finest collectable firearms By ABH457 For those who do not own an 1866 Winchester or its predesessor, the Henry, this book comes as close to putting one in your hands as paper and print can. The cool of blued steel and the balance in a fine walnut stock are to be felt on every page. This book is an emblem for the art of still life photography today and for printers' skills. The images are stunning throughout. And pread after spread of exceptional Winchesters from collections around the world confirm that innovation and fine craft make collectables, whether from industry or the fine art studio. The text is useful but leaves one wanting more detail. For the beginner or aspiring collector, for example, a clearer way of differentiating one model and the next would be useful.

Both books are exquisite, coffee table size--eight and a half inches by eleven inches (landscape)--and each are over 400 pages, almost every page filled with extremely high quality color photographs.R.L. Wilson, in addition to being a collector and well-known author in the firearms field, is a historical consultant to Colt's Firearms Division. The subtitle on the first page says, "The official history of Winchester firearms and ammunition from 1849 to the present," which pretty much covers the entire history of the Winchester Firearms Company (now known as U.S. Repeating Arms, since a bankruptcy and change of ownership.)If you are a Winchester aficionado, or just a Western history buff, with an interest in "The Gun That Won the West," this is a book you will want in your library. It is one of my favorite books. It will probably be one of yours, also.Joseph Pierre, Author of THE ROAD TO DAMASCUS: Our Journey Through Eternity

Wow...A Great Coffee Table Book for Any Firearms History Buff By Karl Just the pictures in this huge volume are enough to make it worth thumbing through, but the written information is tremendous and the author manages to cover all connections to Winchesters' Fathers, including John M Browning, my personal hero (other than my Father, Uncle, Grandfather and all other veterans of WWII and Korea). Probably not all the information on Winchester firearms and ammo history but all that I can absorb and still have a social life.

The single most intimate look at Muhammad Ali’s life after boxing, told through the story of an unexpected friendship.

On Easter weekend 1988, then struggling writer and movie store clerk Davis Miller drove to Muhammad Ali's mother's modest house in Louisville, knocked on the front door, and waited for an answer. It had been over two decades since he’d first glimpsed The Champ on a black-and-white television―when Miller was an eleven-year-old boy, shattered by the unexpected loss of his mother―and he felt the time had come for him to personally thank the man whose fearlessness, grace, and tenacity gave him the power to overcome a near-paralyzing depression. When the door finally opened, Miller would not only get to meet his “spiritual constant” but also begin a surprising and tender new friendship that would forever transform his life.

Today, more than twenty-five years later, the two still share an uncommon bond, the sort that can be fashioned only in serendipitous ways and fortified through shared experiences. Miller now draws from those remarkable moments to give us a quietly startling portrait of a great man physically ravaged but spiritually young. Beginning with a series of three interconnected anecdotes about Miller's first meeting with the champ―which formed the basis of "My Dinner with Ali," a legendary piece of sports journalism that was anthologized in The Best American Sports Writing of the Century―Approaching Ali continues as a historic tribute, composed of linked vignettes spread out over decades, that is unlike anything else that has been written about one of the world's most famous and loved men.

As readers will discover in these pages, Miller is the Everyman, Ali the Superman in physical decline. Commingled together, the two voices form the all-time most intimate portrait of Ali's day-by-day life in his postboxing career. Through Miller’s eyes, we witness the aging and ailing Ali playing mischievous tricks on unsuspecting guests, performing sleight of hand for any willing audience, and walking over ten miles each day to enjoy an ice cream sundae and talk with strangers. Miller goes on to reveal a side of the boxing legend we never knew was there, whether it be Ali handing out hundred-dollar bills at a Los Angeles bus stop, showing a group of inner-city children the ocean for the very first time, or unexpectedly cracking jokes with the distinctly insightful words he is still able to summon.

Following in the grand contemporary literary tradition of writers such as Gay Talese, Tom Wolfe, and Nick Hornby, Miller gives us a series of extraordinary insights into a man that he has been approaching nearly his entire life. The result is both a new introduction to the human side of a boxing legend as well as a loving and beautifully written reclamation of Muhammad Ali’s life after the ring.

Approaching Ali: A Reclamation in Three Acts, by Davis Miller

Review “Each of Mr. Miller's Muhammad Ali tales is lyrical, important, and rigorously humanizing. There is music and truth in each sentence he writes. I can think of no higher praise for a writer or his work.” (Maya Angelou)"(Miller) recounts his 27-year bond with the champ, catching Ali's graceful decline and his influence. Thoughtful, emotive." (Sports Illustrated)“In clear, observant prose, Miller details how the most outspoken and graceful heavyweight of all time now struggles to knot a tie or make himself understood. Yet in the wreck of ‘the black Superman,’ Miller discovers and celebrates a spiritual Ali, a bodhisattva molded by the unlikely path of boxing and the Nation of Islam…. [Miller’s] engagement and journalistic integrity provide a unique perspective on a man he portrays as a hero for the world.” (Publishers Weekly)“In Approaching Ali: A Reclamation in Three Acts (Liveright), Miller weaves vignettes drawn from his time with the Champ―updates of published work combined with new recollections―to tell a deeply personal story of Ali’s post-career life. From Ali’s take on historic fights to his struggles with Parkinson’s to unguarded moments, as when the boxer performs magic tricks for kids on a South Carolina beach, Miller celebrates the one-two combo of charisma and power that made Ali both his lifelong muse and the most famous athlete on the planet.” (C.J. Lotz - Garden & Gun)“Not like anything else that I have read. What a strange encounter between this extraordinary man and his gifted troubadour. One has the feeling of absolute and radiant verisimilitude, which is exactly what one requires.” (Donald Hall, former poet laureate of the United States)“From Norman Mailer to George Plimpton to Hunter S. Thompson to Tom Wolfe, Muhammad Ali has inspired some of the best work by America’s best writers. But no one has written about him as well as Davis Miller. Approaching Ali is a book for the ages, a book to be treasured.” (Matthew Polly, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller American Shaolin)“I don't know of a better or more human biography of an iconic American than Davis Miller's magnificent portrait of Muhammad Ali. Approaching Ali is the best book about friendship I've read in years. Every sentence in the book is, in one way or another, revelatory, profound, sublime, graceful, naked, true, tender, and uncompromising. Davis is a genuinely great writer.” (Howard Frank Mosher)“There have been many books about Muhammad Ali, and there will be more, but . . . nobody is more qualified to write about Ali’s post-boxing life than Miller.” (Bill Littlefield - Only a Game, NPR)"Davis Miller’s obsession with Muhammad Ali has spanned from his childhood to the present day, and his book Approaching Ali: A Reclamation in Three Acts represents the culmination of that relationship. (Miller's book presents) “the all-time most intimate and quietly startling portrait of Ali’s day-by-day life, as well as the only deeply detailed look at his enormously rich years after boxing.” Ali, now 74 and courageously battling Parkinson’s disease, remains one of the great figures of 20th-century sports, and this profile finds the boxer’s playful good nature and magnanimous personal spirit intact."  (Martin Brady, BookPage)

About the Author Davis Miller's work has been published in many of the leading national magazines, including Men's Journal, GQ, and Esquire, among others. He is the internationally best-selling author of two previous books, including The Tao of Bruce Lee, and is co-librettist of the acclaimed chamber opera Approaching Ali, which is based on his story "My Dinner with Ali."

Approaching Ali highlights a unique relationship and points out the difference between fame and substance By Charles F. seaton It would be impossible to tally the number of words that have been written about Muhammad Ali over the past six decades. Many have come from the minds of the finest in the literary world and others have been penned by sportswriters and even professional intimates. What most of them have in common though is that they were either authored or based in the era when Ali was fighting. His ascension to the title, his decision not to lead other young men into the armed forces as the nation struggled against itself and Washington waged an unjust war, his loss to Joe Frazier and his title-winning effort over the powerful, unbeatable George Foreman. This has all been covered in abundance. Norman Mailer, David Remnick, Dr. Ferdie Pacheco and too many more to list. But what happened to Muhammad Ali after the lights dimmed, the crowds dwindled and the world moved on? What Davis Miller has given us in his book Approaching Ali A Reclamation In Three Acts, is an up-close and intimate look at Ali in his post ring years and it becomes strikingly evident that Ali was no less interesting after he heard the final bell. Miller’s relationship with Ali’s friends, family and his embrace of and enduring friendship with a talented sportswriter who just happens to be one of the biggest fans of “The Greatest of All Times.”His intimacy with the three-time former heavyweight champion gives the rest of us an opportunity to experience Ali’s interactions with his children, wife Lonnie and Brother Rahman. Miller spent time with Muhammad’s parents, Odessa and Cassius Clay, Sr., painting, short clear portraits of both. Ali is nothing if not an unconscious melding of his mother’s sweetness and the volatility of an African-American man denied his due as a fine artist in the Louisville, Ky. of the mid-twentieth century. There are two types of people to whom this book is highly recommended - fans of Muhammad Ali and those who came along in the wake of his career and know little of him. Both groups will come away knowing they have read something special, particularly the warm and long relationship between Ali and the author.Approaching Ali gives us a close personal look at the most famous athlete of all time and one of the most famous people in the world. Miller makes it clear that in no way is Muhammad Ali an anachronism, but he does hail from a time when people were famous for more than just being famous. It seems strange today, but during the peak of Ali’s fame back in the 1960s and 1970s you actually had to do something to be famous.I was a visitor to his Deer Lake, PA training camp for a period between 1972 and 1974 and having spent some time with the Champ myself, Miller’s longer and much deeper relationship rings especially true to me.To flesh out his picture of Ali, Miller also hit the road interviewing and visiting with the Champ in Louisville, Berrien Springs, MI, Las Vegas, NV. How was Miller able to get so close? There is little doubt that Ali recognized that the young writer had a genuine love and respect for him and that is what would be translated onto the page. The chapter where Miller writes of taking his young son on a thousand mile drive to meet Ali is especially poignant. That Muhammad Ali meant so much to him that he wanted to introduce him to his son goes a long way to pointing out the genuineness of this book. Who wouldn’t want to be part of a father-son bonding trip with the home of Muhammad Ali has the eventual destinationI am certainly past the stage where I take any of today’s celebrities seriously and so I know little of them beyond certain of their professional efforts. However, it is doubtful that anyone could stand up to the scrutiny or generate a similar level of interest so long after their relevance has faded from the mainstream.Despite his multi-millions, will anyone sit down, visit and write about Floyd decades after his retirement? It is doubtful. Relationships can be everything and Announcing Ali is about – above all – a relationship.

By Paul Marley I recommend this book very highly to any reader looking for engaging, touching and real stories of human interest. I have read Mr. Miller's other writings and the stories in this book that appeared in his other books have been beautifully polished and they shine ever more brightly now. The new stories bring an additional dimension to Mr. Miller's fascinating relationship with the the World's most famous Man. Mr. Miller's writing is a pleasure to read. His descriptive style is vibrant and full. He is able to make you feel that you are living these remarkable experiences right along with him. Even if you've never seen a boxing match you'll come away from this book an Ali fan and a Miller fan, too.

It does not major on the boxing or bouts that he had, but is mainly the story of two men who became friends. In many places there are just snilppets or short stories that Miller has written which bridge the time he is talking about with others. My only wish is that the story could have been told in a consistent manner from start to finish, but it obviously cannot necessarily be told that way. I very much appreciate getting to know the real Ali, his personality, his dealings with people, rather than just a summary of the boxers fights. Received this copy from the Goodreads Giveaways and am certainly happy that I got the opportunity to read this book.J. Robert Ewbank author "John Wesley, Natural Man, and the Isms" "Wesley's Wars" "To Whom It May Concern" and "Tell Me About the United Methodist Church"

FREE BONUS BOOK INSIDE: Get Dwayne Walker’s St. Clair's Defeat: The Indians Massacre of the American Army for FREE when you buy this true crime boxed set! Book 1 – Arnold Sodeman: The True Story of The Schoolgirl Strangler This Australian serial killer went on to kill several of young schoolgirls in the 1930s Australia. Arnold Sodeman murdered four young girls with little though of remorse. Without guilt, the evil serial killer strangled them to death with their own clothing and left their small bodies alone in the Australian brush, earning himself a chilling position in the annals of Australian crime and true crime stories that would last forever. Book 2 – Edmund Kemper: The True Story of The Co-ed Killer American serial killer Edmund Kemper III stalked co-eds in California at the height of the era of peace and free love, dismembering his victims and tossing their body parts in remote areas around Santa Cruz. A lust killer who savored the act of decapitating his victims - and often used their severed heads for sexual pleasure - Kemper’s story is particularly twisted among historical serial killers. This true crime story, a detailed biography of one of the most psychopathic serial killers of our time, shares some insight into the troubled childhood and awkward nature that led the American serial killer to take 10 lives, including those of six pretty co-eds, his paternal grandparents, his calculatingly cruel mother and his mother’s best friend. Book 3 – Charles Ray Hatcher: The True Story of Crazy Charlie’s Killing Spree This book gives the details of the life of this lust killer right from his dysfunctional childhood and petty crimes to the brutal murders and trial. True crime stories give the right insight about the crime, the criminal, and the victim. Most of the serial killers biography tends to border on sensationalism and trashy content. This book seeks to dispel this notion and brings to you the true facts about Charles Ray Hatcher, his trial and an analysis of his psychopathic crimes. Book 4 – Cary Stayner: The True Story of The Yosemite Park Killer While some would say that American serial killer Cary Stayner was influenced by family tragedy – his already-troubled family was shattered when his brother was abducted for seven years and held as a sex slave before his heroic return inspired the miniseries “I Know My First Name Is Steven” – in reality, Cary Stayner’s true crime story is much more ominous. The handsome, outdoorsy guy with a love for marijuana, nude beaches and the Sierra Nevada mountain range where he once spotted Bigfoot had been harboring fantasies of brutally killing women years before his brother’s abduction turned the Stayner family upside down. The biography of serial killer Cary Stayner and his psychopathic crime spree leaves spine-tingling chills, because as far as the outside world was concerned, he was a fairly normal guy who found himself uncontrollably compelled to kill. Stayner has been on death row in California’s famed San Quentin for more than 10 years, but for the families of his victims, no punishment is just enough to make up for the vibrant lives Stayner took, making him one of the most depraved American serial killers in contemporary history.

It was pretty in-depth and went into psychology and their childhood backgrounds By Anastacia Russell This is an interesting true crime collection of serial killers. All of whom I didn't know about previously. It was pretty in-depth and went into psychology and their childhood backgrounds. The problem is the editing. These books really need to be redone with a good editor. "Grizzly" for "grisly" actually made me laugh. "Grizzly murders." I just pictured a huge bear rampaging around California with a knife and a chloroform bottle. If you can look past the numerous mistakes, it is a decent read.I was given a free copy for an honest review.

They are all well written and well researched and compared to alot of books out there, these are written in a way that keeps the reader interested and wondering during the whole read. The book about Edmund Kemper is probably my favorite, he is such an interesting guy and not like most serial killers I've read about.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Sick Minds, Fascination Stories By Grady Harp Florida author Jack Rosewood inherited his fascination for heinous crimes from his father, a journalist covering major grim crimes, e.g. Ted Bundy. He is fascinated with serial killers – their development psychologically, their preparation for their life of crime, and the details of how they made their bloody black marks on the world. The movie star handsome Rosewood lives in Jupiter, Florida with his wife and two children. This is now a collection of his previously published books from his series Historical Serial Killers and Murderers and adds one of his collaborators, Dwayne Walker, books - St. Clair's Defeat: The Indians Massacre of the American Army as well as Bliss by B.A. Talarico.Jack’s writing style completely captures the essence of the serial killers he studies. His astute studies of the various serial killers about whom he is providing biographies is not only fascinating reading material, but also a probing investigation of the psychopathology of serial killers. In each installment of Jack’s series he seems to grow along with his expertise in reportage. There is complete information not only about the perpetrators background and the series of murders and assaults he committed, but also about the interplay between the press and the judiciary system and relatives of the victims that makes this one of Jack’s most successful books to date. The books included in this collection are Arnold Soderman: The True Story of The Schoolgirl Strangler, Edmund Kemper: The True Story of the Co-Ed Killer, Charles Ray Hatcher: The True Story of Crazy Charlie’s Killing Spree, and Carl Stayner: The True Story of the Yosemite Park Killer. Having read them all individually it is easy to recommend this collection of books to all those with a fascination for exploring the minds of serial killers. Grady Harp, December 15

Assumed Guilty: True Stories of People Found Guilty of Crimes They Did Not Commit

(previously published under the title Executed Unjustly)

Recounts the true criminal stories of people who were accused, convicted and executed for crimes. Some of them were later officially exonerated for the crime but for others the preponderance of evidence today shows they were not guilty and were executed wrongfully, though never officially found innocent.

The true crime cases occurred in the United States and it will be shown that our Judicial System doesn’t always result in a fair decision. It seems unimaginable to most of us that totally innocent people would actually lose their lives due to fear, social inequality, legal ineptitude and downright criminal acts. The real crime seems to have been perpetrated by those who promised to uphold the law.

Some of the cases included are:

  • Josefa Rodriguez< – the only woman legally hanged in Texas,
  • Joe Arridy– a man with the mind of a six year old,
  • Leo Alexander Jones– a series of blunders and errors signed his death warrant, and
  • Carlos DeLuna – a case of mistaken identity.

Be prepared to be shocked at the details of these criminal cases and the tragic reasons and ways the innocent died.

By Anee It is bad enough to be unjustly accused and executed on Friday the 13th but when they botch the hanging and even men had to turn away, as in the case of Josefa Rodriguez, it is heart wrenching. From the beginning to the end of this book are intriguing cases of unjust executions. It makes you question the human race as to why we are so willing to believe the unbelievable, jump to conclusions that don't make sense and put our fellow human beings to death so quickly. It seems know one wants to admit they are wrong and eat some humble pie.As you can see from my rant, this book is another must read from the extensive library of Mike Riley. Can't wait for the next one!

This is a book about several people who were charged with a crime, then tried, convicted ,and sentenced to death. After they were executed they were totally exonerated or widely believed to be innocent. The story of Josefa Rodriguez was so sad to me that I almost stopped reading it. But you must read it...and all the stories because they are very well written and powerful. To think that most, if not all, these people were actually innocent makes your heart very heavy with sorrow.

Amazing By Alexandra Thomas Well written and narrated, these stories are amazing cases that prove justice is not always right, in fact they could not be more wrong. Some of these cases were found innocent many years later and are accounts from many different parts of the world in different dates. Truly amazing research was put into this title revealing the flawed face of a justice system that even today proves to be ineffective in some cases.Highly recommended!

This is the story of a small town girl, a newspaper reporter, who marries a country school teacher who is the son of a well-to-do farmer. He bears his bride to her first home and the school he is to teach that year, deep in the swamps of Arkansas. She learns here that the love of the land burns in her new husband like a passion. She makes a valiant effort to cope with manners, customs and conditions that prevail, but when she is to have her first baby, she refuses to place herself under the care of the community vet. She returns instead to her hometown for that event. Trouble then ensues as she suffers at the hands of her in-laws. The ostracism, criticism, humiliation and animosity are more than she can bear. With her subsequent move back to her husband she refuses to live with his parents, taking instead a two room house kept for the transient labor, it being the only alternative. She then struggles to make a home. This sets the stage for interminable conflict and “overcoming.” This book deals, too, with this woman's very real problem when she realizes that, though baptized into the Baptist church at the tender age of twelve, she does not know God, cannot feel that he hears her when she cries out to him from the depths of her suffering and despair. When the grueling business of bringing her second child into the world is accomplished, she decides she will search for God until she finds Him.

FEATHERS IN A HIGH WIND, by Flossie Deane Craig

About the Author Flossie Deane Craig was born in 1891 and is a native of Paragould, Arkansas. She lived in Little Rock, Arkansas; Louisville, Kentucky; Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; Harms Ending at Shiloh, Hahira, Georgia; Clan's Harbor at Bethany, Hahira, Georgia; and spent the last 31 years of her life at Crestwood Farms in Valdosta, Georgia. She was a prolific writer--poet, novelist and journalist--at her typewriter almost daily, though always meeting her responsibilities as a homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. Her poetry and stories have appeared in many publications including: Kentucky Anthologists of Women's Poets (1928), American Lyric Poetry (1936), Louisville Courier Journal, Miami Herald, Hahira Gold Leaf, Valdosta Daily Times, Farm Journal, Progressive Farmer and Mind Digest. Once, after a fire that had destroyed what remained of her work (she had recently “cleansed” her work to start anew), she was haunted and beset by the ending of one such work: . . .were I seized in bondage, and cast into prison. . .by all else forsaken. . .. Words, words, my faithful, exuberant and friendly companions, I still would have with me. . . .and promptly sat down at her typewriter. She was spiritually attuned, well-read, an empathetic listener and a joy to talk with. So although we no longer have Flossie to converse with on this and that. . .we have boxes and boxes yet to go of her life's work. She lived and died courageously and at peace.

I wish there was a seque!.Not only does the author give the reader keen insight into life in the US in the early 1900's, but she tells her story in such a way that I found it hard to set the book aside. Through trials and suffering, her spirit remained intact. I've heard stories from grandparents about growing up in the 1920's and 1930's, but this book weaves those kinds of stories together in such a way that I would recommend it for everyone; it is an entertaining read which leaves much to think about.

23 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Not for Children By Beth Kristen Nehme I enjoyed this book. I liked the spunky strong heroine. I liked the romance. I even enjoyed the insight into the xenophobia that was extant in America between World War I and II, which lead to the interment of the Japanese in camps during the second World War. Nevertheless, I would not want any children or young adults exposed to the racism of the book. It's one thing for an adult to look back at a piece of literature in historical context and another for a young adult to read it as a guide to life. There is an EXTREME anti-Japanese sentiment, as well as a White Supemist theme in the book. I found it very surprising in an author who I ahd considered to be an open minded feminist. I guess being subject to prejudice yourself doesn't stop you from expressing it with regard to others.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. excellent story about a past American time, but be warned ... By HJS ... it's virulently racist, especially against the Japanese. Main character Linda, a high school junior in VERY different times, grows up in the absence of her nerve specialist father, who nonetheless shaped her. I reread this story every couple years in spite of its racism because it's such a pleasure to see Linda's strengths develop and her adult self emerge. Katy the family cook, fellow student Donald (HOW different high school was then), neighbor Marion, "sister" Eileen, and love interest/author/neighbor Peter are all very interesting characters.

If you know a little history and understand the times By Loraine Shepherd I've read the earlier reviews and have to agree that, in this day and age, they could be considered racist. However, if you know a little history and understand some of the feelings of people who actually lived during these years one can see how Mrs. Stratton-Porter was only expressing some of the frustations and views of this era.For instance, on Apr 5, 1920 Japanese forces landed in Vladivostok. Durning this time America was being bantered into joining the League of Nations, in fact England denounced America for being so slow to join.On Sep 16, 1920 A bomb exploded in front of the Morgan building at 23 Wall St. in NYC at noon on a busy Thursday. At least 33 (35) people were killed and hundreds wounded. A 16-foot stretch of the Tennessee-marble façade with pockmarks of the blast was retained as a memorial. Ron Chernow described the incident in his book "The House of Morgan." No one was charged but Prof. Paul Avrich, in his book "Sacco and Vanzetti: The Anarchist Background," later held that Mario Buda, an Italian immigrant, was the culprit. So Mrs. Stratton-Porter wasn't just expressing "racist" views, she was expressing the frustrating, unsettling emotions of the time.
