By Wanda L Davie Okay, I love this series and this particular book made me cry in more than one of the chapters. Of course being a former Woman Marine and having a spouse in Vietnam at the same time really hit home. I know that many civilians can empathize with military families but I doubt they experience that visceral kick to the gut when hearing a loved one has become a “casualty”. I didn’t think the story of Vi and Joe would have the “punch” it did since neither was a favorite of mine in the first two books. Boy was I wrong! The chemistry is palpable from the start and you realize that these two love-damaged people would be insane to deny that it is more than that. Kate Aster has managed to combine her experience as a military spouse with the romance of a well-loved woman. I can’t wait to read Bess’s story!

I had not read your previous stories but will be sure to get them this afternoon on my Kindle! I took a chance with a new author and am thankful I did!I have always enjoyed books with good dialogues, always hoping to find a story that isn't just filler for a sexual marathon through the pages. Don't get me wrong, I liked to be titillated as much as the next romance reader, but I have found that the older I have become, that unless the characters are hanging upside down from the ceiling, slathered in Jello, and screaming a Gregorian monk chant, I would rather read about how the characters (secondary as well as primary) interact, tease, flirt, argue, deal with life's baggage, and everyday issues as well as the unusual or extraordinary such as our military families go through (with an occasional sexual romp!) .I have come late to the reading of military-based romances (huge romantic suspense reader - Roberts, Howard, Robards) and am glad to have found another author who treats our military with honor, integrity, and understanding. They are heroes, true, but also just men and women doing the job that they signed up to do without expecting recognition.Ms. Aster, keep the words flowing! You have a fan in Alabama!
6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. It's like watching love grow... By Chitown Reader This is a solid 4.5 stars for me but absolutely worthy of rounding up and not down. It loses a quarter star because Joe, the alpha hero, didn't use his awesome "alpha-ness" enough while at the press gala. There were opportunities abounding for him to step up and put Violet’s ex-husband in his place, but he held back. While it was great that Joe, resplendent in his dress uniform, was there for Violet our handsome hero was a bit understated when facing the jerk and I would have enjoyed him doing more. Maybe punching him in the face would have been too much, but Joe was way too subtle for me. Another quarter point is lost for the penultimate scene which took place at the airport. It wasn’t an awful scene, but one that has been overplayed in the genre.All of that said, do yourself a favor and READ THIS BOOK. Did I mention I loved it?? It will make you smile a lot and make you wish you were Vi a little. Joe and Vi are likeable people, each with a bit of baggage. When their first meeting—which happens before this book—is recounted, the circumstances are uncomfortable for Vi and funny for the reader. And that’s also where we begin to appreciate the man that Joe is. He is honorable with deep respect for those in his life and under his command. We’re treated to his hot body and bedroom skill at appropriate times in the book, and those parts will stay with you for a while. As much as I appreciated those scenes (and I truly did!) I was engaged throughout the entire book watching their relationship develop. I enjoyed the vulnerability they exposed to one another, they way they had each other's back, and the way they shared their feelings with one another over time. That was something they each had to grow into because of the baggage I mentioned before.There’s a back-story with Vi’s sister and brother-in-law. That gives the reader a peek into the sisters’ relationship and it also speaks to the emotional bond that exists among SEAL teammates.I read this in one night with a nice glass of wine and I was sad when it ended. Great story from the start. Loved the characters, loved the romance, loved the levity…and loved that they got their happily ever after. Well deserved! I'm now looking for another book from this author.
