Buckley My one and only complaint with Greig Beck's debut, "Beneath The Dark Ice," was that his characters were given insufficient time to explore the strange world the protagonists discovered miles beneath the Antarctic ice. Of course, they were being pursued by a monstrous cephalopod at the time, so I guess that can be excused.However, in this long-awaited sequel to that novel, Beck more than rectifies that situation, giving readers (and his super solder Alex Hunter) plenty of time to appreciate the mysterious primordial world beneath the ice caps. Of course, they're still having to deal with the aforementioned monstrous cephalopod, but hey I'll take what I can get!On a more serious note, this is another exciting installment in Beck's "Arcadian' series. In this novel, Hunter, a Special Forces operative granted nearly super-human powers through a strange series of events, is once again thrust into a precarious situation. Scientists in Antartica have picked up signals from an experimental U.S. submarine that disappeared in 2008. However, Chinese forces also pick up the signal, and thus begins a race to reclaim the lost sub. As Hunter and his crew find themselves back in the world beneath the dark ice, they must deal with not only with the predatory nemesis from the first novel, but also a team of genetically enhanced Chinese super soldiers determined to find the sub before the Americans. Above ground, cold war tensions threaten to go hot as leaders from both sides await the results of the subterranean struggle.Beck is firing on all literary cylinders in this novel. There is plenty of interesting character development (particularly in respect to the Arcadian), and also plenty of exciting glimpses of the Pellucidarian world beneath the ice. Add in generous amounts of pulse-pounding action, and you have yet another noteworthy installment in this series. Beck continues to serve as a reliable brand name for fast-paced adventure, combining all the best elements of military fiction, horror, and sci-fi into one easily digestible package. Now I can't wait for the seventh book in this fun series!

Well, after ripping through it in one sitting (and annoying my wife by keeping my bedside light on until the early hours of the morning) I can safely say the following.Kraken Rising is Beck's best work yet.. and the Arcadian is back.HELL YEAH!!!I loved absolutely everything in this book, from it's off the hook action sequences and spine tingling encounters right through to the moments of pure primordial terror. Kraken Rising not only hits all of the markers for a great action story, it also scares the living hell out of you as you read. One of Beck's greatest skills as a writer is his ability to explore our greatest fears and to build suspense. The further I got into Kraken Rising the higher the stakes got, and at one stage I had to put the book down for a minute just to take a breather from the insane and terrifying encounters with the monster (a gigantic and super intelligent cephalopod/orthocone with a taste for humans). Add to this mix the threat of nuclear war, and a showdown between the navies of the United States and China off Antartica, and you have the recipe for what is simply an amazing story. The military hardware and tech that was also explored in Kraken Rising blew my mind. Super soldiers, genetic engineering, body armour that would make Tony Stark jealous, advanced weaponry, and secret submarines all leap out from the pages as you read, and make Kraken Rising even more addictive and explosive (one particular scene where the monster assaults a Chinese naval vessel was just INSANE). What makes this book unforgettable however is Alex Hunter. The Arcadian. The original super soldier. The best. How Beck has handled his evolution over this series has been nothing short of impressive, and I adored the subtle nuances and layers to his character that have slowly started to appear and come to prominence throughout the last few books (having a child, dealing with the psychotic side of his mind, etc). His showdown with the monster reminded me of Brody taking on the shark in Jaws, or Dutch facing off against the Predator. It had that same level of excitement, tension, and awesomeness. All in all this story gripped me from the opening page and just refused to let go. And now, days afterwards, I'm still googling about things Beck mentions throughout the book (sightings of giant squids, fossils, boats and planes going missing with no trace, strange sounds heard from the depths, etc). That's how much of an impact it had.Kraken Rising is military horror at its absolute finest, and I would recommended it to anyone with a heartbeat and a functioning brain!5 out of 5 stars.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent, but still the third best Alex Hunter book! By Doc Beck has had a winner in the Alex Hunter franchise for years. First, you must read him. Second, read the Hunter books in order. Third, let me know if you diasgree that Beneath the Ice and Black Mountain edge this book out for best in the series. Beck again shows the ability to make your skin crawl, to astound you with science that appears to support his books and providing terrifying battle sequences, along with unforgettable characters, both good and evil. This book ends with a natural seque to book 7 and I want to see it ASAP! Long live Beck and Alex Hunter!

About the Author Lenaya Andersen has a BA in Secondary Education and an MA in English Literature. She currently teaches English composition at UNR and TMCC. She lives in Northern Nevada with her husband, Brian, and their four children. She enjoys the outdoors, camping, visiting Lake Tahoe, and hiking with her family. Larissa Cherpeski has a BS in Psychology from BYU and an MA in Clinical and Mental Health Counseling from Adams State University. Active in the LDS church all her life and six years older than Lenaya, she has lived through her sister’s addictions. She and her husband live in Oregon with their five children. She currently works part-time as a child and adolescent outpatient counselor.

By Amazon Customer I received my copy on Friday and every spare minute that life has allowed has been spent reading this book. I plan on sharing it with everyone near and dear to me with children, and then to others that I work with involved in drug court, restorative justice and beyond. The book is helping me to understand that even though I have always believed that addiction is a "choice" once you have gone down that path, it is not easily left. I would recommend this book to anyone to help them understand how addiction affects everyone, not just those using. Thank you to the authors for the courage to put this in print and open so much of your life for the world to see.

Two perspectives on substance abuse and addiction By KFM This account, written by two sisters, tells of how their family and close friends loved and supported their daughter, sister, and friend. Through the stories of their lives, it tells Lenaya's journey of getting addicted to drugs and alcohol – starting with ‘lesser’ substances and graduating to the hardcore drugs. I was shocked at how young Lenaya was introduced to drugs and alcohol, and how driven she was to find fun and claim it, no matter the cost or consequences. Her sister Larissa fills us in on the details of home life during those early years, on through Lenaya’s teen and college years. This book is also very spiritual. We see each sister grappling with her own weaknesses while going through unbearable losses, giving up, then deciding to hang on longer. Both sisters tell of many instances in their lives when prayer gave them answers and comfort. I felt the spirit of the Lord many times while reading this book. It is full of great examples of friends and family reaching out in love to someone who does not reciprocate that love. Very well written, with easy-to-read, down-to-earth language. Lenaya’s words paint a vivid picture of what drugs did to her mind and body. She is thoughtful and considerate of her audience and what they might want and need to know about her choices. Definitely a testament to the power of prayer, as Lenaya seemed to be completely supported by the prayers of family and friends during the many years of her drug addiction. The book winds up bringing us to the present day, where we get to see where each sister's decisions have brought them. There is hope; never give up hope.

Friberg The authors did an excellent job of creating a picture of their two different lives, their experiences and their journey. What touched me very deeply is that they both chose different paths but that doesn't mean the pathways can't converge and come back together again. There is always a way back home. I also appreciated the story of family and how the choices of one member of the family can have an effect on the whole picture. I've never been addicted to drugs, and I've never had an immediate family member face this either, but it was still completely relatable and there's something everyone can learn in these pages. We all have something we're addicted to, and reading this story helped me take an honest look at myself. Couldn't put it down. I will never forget this book.

I was not familiar with the original story, so I had no idea what to expect when I started this book. I was delighted from the first. The story begins quickly and though I like to try to figure out what's coming next, I was surprised time after time. I liked that the romantic element to the story was very pure and innocent, and I would happily share this with my 12-year-old daughter. I read the whole thing in two sittings. I was so enthralled with the characters and their plight that I kept having to turn one more page. I would highly recommend this story to others, and I look forward to reading more from Ms. Huchton!

I have read the first two installments in this flipped fairy tale collection and absolutely could not wait to read this one. I can honestly say that this author wowed me again, because I really loved it; I loved it so much that I read it in two days! The story begins with a man named Lukas who has been assisting his mother around the house. When Lukas’ mother goes to collect their animal traps, she runs into an Elk. After Lukas goes in search of her, she informs her son that this is not just any Elk, but a magical creature that was sent to change his future. The Elk has been wounded, with its hoof stuck in a dangerous crevice. With no escape, Lukas knows that the wolves would surely kill the animal by nightfall if he and his mother do not provide aide. After the Elk is free, he is forced to make his mother a promise that could quite possibly bring him to his death. He is tasked with walking the Elk back up the mountain to where it can stay safe; this is where his adventure begins. When they come upon a door that is crested with dragons, he knows not what he has walked into. With dragons, one mysterious woman, a magical elk, and promises made in the dark—Lukas has never felt so hopelessly lost until it is all taken away with the wisps of a lighted candle.My favorite characters are Lukas, Erata and The Feathered Man. Lukas is so compassionate and brave, but he doesn’t fully understand the weight behind the promise that he has made to the woman in the dark. When he is asked to stay with her forever, even though he has never seen her face—he is leery and confused. He feels that it is the right thing to do, but doesn’t comprehend the importance of the shrouding darkness that surrounds them. Everyone and everything is vague, the only request that makes sense to Lukas is their insistence that he wait. In time, all answers will be revealed. Now, Erata is beautiful—but always fearful. Her desire to find love, to ride the wind and to escape the loneliness of the darkness that was originated by her own doing is so tragic, but her story makes her character that much more intriguing. I wanted to know the story; I couldn’t put the book down until I understood. Because this story is so unpredictable, the reader doesn’t actually find out what is going on until Lukas does. During his adventures, he discovers a little more with each quest. All of the other supporting characters that Lucas encounters are also enticing as well. Erata’s sisters are always wonderful and very helpful with Lukas and the three brothers provide him with objects to carry with him. Of the three brothers, The Feathered Man is the most mysterious and powerful. He commands the room with his presence and his shadow is most sought out for in the vast desert. His story is beautiful and majestic and I really loved reading about his part in this adventure.Overall, I rate this story with five stars because the content is high original and creative. This adventure is fascinating and exciting, all while unravelling before your eyes! The pace is quick and easy to follow with little or no errors in writing style. The words are fluid and the story is mesmerizing. The author does a superb job with character development and I was very impressed that all of my questions were answered by the end of this novel. In my opinion, the target audience for this story would be young adults interested in fairy tales and fantasy or mythological genres. This book can be read as a standalone, but it is interrelated with the other flipped fairy tales in this collection. I would definitely recommend this book to others and I look forward to reading the next installment in this series.

Oh, and before I go on, I received an ARC from the author for me to review!I have to admit some truths before I begin:Truth #1 -- while the concept of the Flipped Fairy Tales that Ms. Huchton writes have had me completely intrigued since I met her at UtopYa this year, this is in fact my first book by this author. And it won't be my last.Truth #2 -- I know NOTHING about the original fairy tale this book is based off of. About halfway through the book I became curious, and started to look it up, but I didn't want to ruin the story for myself, so I held off.Truth #3 -- this book is so totally out of my wheelhouse, that I'm actually surprised by my thorough enjoyment. What do I mean? I'm a modern setting/writing kind of girl. I tend to steer clear of historical books and high fantasy, and I prefer...I don't know how to describe it.... I just can get a bit lost and lose interest when the manner of speech and voice is more formal? maybe? I just end up sticking with contemporary settings, or if they're futuristic settings, then more casual or "normal". I'm probably bumbling this up, but please tell me you know what I'm talking about? So this book was a little bit outside of the norm for me. I think it's that usually I find it really hard to relate to the characters if I can't imagine myself in the story. So I'm desperately trying to figure out what made this story stand apart for me. B/C I couldn't really see myself in the story, but I was epically immersed all the same.I think my enchantment starts with the unique and captivating plot. I was telling my husband about the story and mentioned that it was a bit more fantasy like. But one thing that stands apart is that the hero doesn't have magical powers and this destiny to be a great hero. He's just a boy who holds strong convictions, has a beautiful heart, and suffers for the mistakes he makes. So he's kind of an everyman in some ways. He's so easy to empathize with, and you're given ample opportunity to get to know him in the first half of the book. And in that way you're invested in him as a character and so you root for him through the second half of the book. And I just realized I started this paragraph talking about plot and have somehow devolved into talking about my favourite part of a book -- characters. (Oops.) It's not that Lukas is without flaws. But he's endearing all the same. And the same goes for the Elk and Erata -- flawed characters, but with enough heart to make us love them. And it's not just the main characters that stand out. Lukas meets so many people along his journey, and they all had their own unique voice.The world building in this story was also strong -- we traveled to so many different places, and I could imagine each one. I even feel like I spotted the setting (and a character) for the next Flipped Fairy Tale, so I'm anxious to learn if I'm right about that.I have but one complaint -- and it's really more about my personal taste than anything. I could have used a smidge more in the romance department. What can I say, I'm a diehard romantic -- and I just felt more in the friendship chemistry department than in the romance one....either that or I just wanted MORE. But maybe it wouldn't have fit in with the story, what do I know?This was a solid YA adventure. If you're a fan of fairy tales AT ALL, I definitely recommend this read....you won't be disappointed, and if you're like me, you'll be looking to read the rest in the series to devour a bit more magical awesomeness.

This brought the reality it was time to stop blaming everyone for all the wrongs in my life and move forward. My new life moved into one with a life of recovery and a path to find a spiritual direction. You'll find inside these pages my path and struggles, through ups and downs... along the way, much less my almost loss of life because recovery didn't come as easily for me as it does for some.

Searching for Father By Don Thomas One of the most outstanding testimonies to the grace of God and the transformative power of the Christian gospel I have ever read! I know Mike and Michele Casey personally but didn't know the whole back story that led to their thriving ministry that continues to save lives today by the power of God. The true and uncensored story kept me gripped to my reading chair as it was hard to put down! I enjoyed the low-key and "straight from the heart" style. Mike is able to share the events of his life as well as his inner thoughts and feelings in a way that he "keeps it real" (and raw!). Knowing Mike now as a minister and pastor makes it hard to imagine he went through such family dysfunction and trauma. This story should be made into a movie! A must read for those seeking the Father-heart of God who may not have experienced a "normal" relationship with their earthly father. It shows how God has made Mike Casey the spiritual father he is today to many, despite his horrific family background and apparently hopeless chemical addiction.

By Joy Haven Well-written and scary, this biography will shake anyone's idea of what a good childhood is! I didn't mean to read it, but it draws you in, and I couldn't put it down. Mike has an amazing ability to recall facts and pour out remembrances. I want to protect every little kid after reading this traumatic story. I don't understand the title. The strain on the author is stressful, but his life-changes are so frequent, he can never become comfortably numb. I am still reading but I wanted to say WOW. This is a great book.

By nataliemarie71 So here it's football season, and my friends keep inviting me to their house to watch a game. Well, I usually have to make up some excuse as to why I can't go because I am too embarrassed to tell them I do not understand the game. Well now, I don't have to lie. I downloaded this book because I felt it would help me learn about the game, and it did!I had no idea how much time and effort these guys put in. Like I had no idea that the length of the field is 120 yards, and that their is a regulation football that must be used. What was really important to me was to know what each player's job is. I learned everything about the Center to the Safety.I only hope that I will be able to remember them all when I get invited to another party.Thanks Ace.

Harding I bought this book specifically to remember the rules of the game just so I could participate with friends when watching a game on tv. I feel like the valuable information inside was wasted on me because the book is great for the player. I would say that every young person that wants to play football needs to read this book to be well informed and know excactly what they are getting into.This book has everything you need to know about football. Some of the information was great for me because I learned about strategies, positions and basics of the game, but there is so much more. The book explains the gear and equipment you need to play football and gives excellent advice on to what to get. It tells players how to eat to get to optimum performance and what food and supplements can help keep your body strong and healthy so that you can keep playing. It gives several stretching exercises that help keep muscles and bones toned and ready to play. There is a whole chapter on strength training with programs, techniques and exercises to build the body. It doesn't stop there. It goes into the mental part of the game, like thinking you are good at playing, visualizations, affirmations and more to keep your mind keen and focused and concentration methods to keep you in the game. There is even a section that takes anything that can go wrong in a game and tells you what you can do about it so you are prepared if it happens.The beginning player will get a wealth of information from this book, but the varsity college or high school player can also get a great deal of good information from it.

By kegpiece I have absolutely no background in American football but my friends are all really into it and even play it in their spare time. I bought this guide as a gift to them really to help improve their play and also so they can understand the game better. I actually bought it as an audio book first off but thought the information was so helpful that it would be great to have it in written form. It is full of information to help improve your game, excellent warm up exercises to increase effectiveness and performance and key strategies.I found that as I read this book I learnt a lot about the game and started to understand a lot more about the player positions, strategy and techniques behind the game which puts me in a much better place to be able to converse with my friends about it better.Very good guide for complete beginners and for those more adept in the game!

An American is the prime suspect and Chief inspector George Trubell is in charge of a case that would rock London. Author Paul Hollis tells his tale of a terroristic plot that would cripple London and its community. Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips are targeted in a failed kidnapping plot. The authorities are on high alert. A senator is killed and the investigation has the search for the American in full alert. Little do the authorities know and the American is in the middle of this is trying to unravel the mystery him self. The Americans girl friend – Zita gets caught into the game. Another kidnapping and another senator is taken captive.Paul Hollis writes his story beautifully. His intricate plot will have you on the edge of your seat. His descriptions are so vivid He writes…The man ran down through a gully and scrambled up the other side. Undergrowth tangled his legs. He tripped and fell twice but didn’t stop. From Booklist In this editorial team's third anthology of original short fantasies based on traditional fairy tales, the writing is consistently of very high quality. Indeed, so high that it constitutes justification for the book all by itself. Readers should skip the introduction, though, in which Datlow and Windling grind their pet axes, and be aware that the stories are best read in small doses, for literate though they are, far too many of them struggle to make old tales fit the procrustean beds of modern psychology. The stories that avoid this, most notably Nancy Collins' "Billy Fearless," are substantially more readable. But the whole volume still will reward connoisseurs of superior literary fantasy prepared to slog through psychobabble and political agendas. Roland Green

Writing as Rich as Rubies, as Dark as Death By A Customer "Ruby Slippers, Golden Tears" is the third book in a series of short story volumes edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling, all inspired by classic fairy tales. The genre of fairy tales tends to be seen as literature for children, but Datlow and Windling point out that this is a modern view - the early versions of the tales were often dark, adult and brutal, and they have invited authors to reinvent the tales with an eye on their origins. The resulting stories cover a variety of styles and genres, from the humour of Roberta Lannes' "Roach in Loafers", to the disturbing horror of Anne Bishop's "Match Girl". This is very much an edition for adults, not to be mistaken for children's stories, and Match Girl (based on Hans Christian Andersen's "Little Match Girl") may be too much for some to stomach. Nevertheless, as the author points out, the instruments of torture described have all been invented and used by humankind. Some of my favourite stories in this volume are Joyce Carol Oates' haunting and moving "The Crossing"; Neil Gaiman's poem "The White Road" - "Mr. Fox" with a twist; and Tanith Lee's "The Beast", an unusual and erotic version of "Beauty and the Beast" with more than a touch of "Bluebeard". But the book is full of gems, some fantastical, some darkly disturbing. Lovers of fantasy should lap it up, and anyone who has enjoyed the previous volumes of the series will find more delights in store for them here.

Not my favorite By Kelly (Fantasy Literature) I didn't like this as much as _Black Thorn, White Rose_ or _Black Heart, Ivory Bones_, but it wasn't bad. Add a couple of stars for the stunning novella "The Fox Wife", set in Japan, and for the lush and horrible "The Beast," the dark tale of a beautiful man who is not what he seems. Subtract a few for a pair of stories I heartily disliked--"The Match Girl" which seemed an endless litany of pain and torture, and "The Masterpiece", which is well-written but will forever haunt me. I can't believe the heroine could have made the choice she did at the end of this take on "Rumplestiltskin." Yes, that's probably the point, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

This particular book is by far the best one I have read (and I've read them all, to date, Jan 2004). Ellen Steiber's "The Fox Wife" is the best short story I've read in awhile - well worth repeated readings, and even led me to seek out more oriental "fox" tales. Joyce Carol Oates, Neil Gaiman, and Jane Yolen are here, and the editors, for this one collection, have abandoned their informal trademark touch of including that one truly odious story. ALL the stories are of high quality, and if you are a devotee of this genre, you MUST read this one. It's really the best of the bunch! Five stars!

Snide & Catty By Barbarianz Who says women are catty; obviously liberals are, too.To start with the good - a much better picture is on the cover than what Amazon shows and the artwork is well done.As for the rest of my review, I will start by saying the story is really not about Palin, but about the author himself and how he tries to deal fairly with a strong woman figure who sees the world differently than he does. It is obvious that he does not understand the conservative mind, nor does he attempt to. Therefore, he is unable to give a fair portrayal of the type of person or accomplishments of his subject. Instead, he tries to turn every positive attribute into a negative, snide analysis.Unfortunately, what he misses is that some of us out here grew up much the same way as Sarah Palin did (except for the opportunity of moose hunting), and we value those small-town requirements of having to be accountable for our behaviors and works, which makes us work harder and stand firmer in our determination to maintain who we are. Maybe if he would actually go to the heart of America instead of just flying over it, he would see the millions of young, independent women who are growing up just like Sarah Palin, and who are still capable of throwing a good hip block in basketball or wiping out a second baseman to prevent a double-play in softball. Maybe then he could see women as capable of stepping into leadership with more than just the "acceptable" liberal degrees or words or political positions.I would not recommend this as reading material for young children as they would not understand the sarcasm the author attempts, nor would they find a story to pique their interest. It might be acceptable for high schoolers as a discussion tool, but they would probably not find it very interesting as a story.

The author clearly opposes everything conservatism stands for and does not even try to see life through different eyes. If you are looking to get a little insight of Sarah Palin I would NOT recommend this at all. Lazy and slanted.

By Amazon Customer The Female Force graphic novel series has covered influential women "who are shaping modern history and culture," So, I've talked about my obsession with educational comics here before. I love comics as an art form and a communication tool. And I love following Blue Water Comics' Female Force series, in which the biographies of famous women are told in words and pictures. The series really shines with its political figure titles, which offer a balanced look at their subject matter. And that has to do with the writer, who authored most of them. Aside from the Female Force titles, they're releasing other biographical series that make for interesting reading.

By Lynchburg Mama - Shelly Every once in a while, a book comes along that makes me think about my life – I mean, deep down, soul searching kind of thinking that leads me to make a positive life change. This book challenged me to think about my relationship with my husband and our marriage. Just like with Kris and Jake, every couple faces hardships but this couple is put to the test, brought to the end of recovery road and tested again. As an individual, this book really makes you think about what a true sacrifice for those whom you love means. I was challenged by thinking about what I would do in the situation and honestly, I can’t answer that with a satisfactory response.The vivid imagery made me pour buckets of tears one moment while smiling and rejoicing in the next. Even if you’re not a “spiritual” person, this book will take you on a spiritual journey like no other. I did not read the first book, White Night, so it was a little hard to follow for a bit but I quickly picked up on the story and was immersed to the point of no return. I couldn’t put it down until I turned the very last page. It touched me so deep that I immediately went to my soul and had a long, hard talk.I won’t go into any deep details but this is so much more than a romance book about a couple who faces a hardship. If it doesn’t move you, then I don’t know what would! My shortcomings came to light and I am doing what I can to make sure that my husband, my children and my friends all know how important they truly are to me.I received a free copy for reviewing purposes but that did NOT affect how I feel about this book. Seriously, GO READ IT!!!

Kathi Haacke Morehead challenges this concept in her book, Eternal Dawn. Kris and Jake are soul mates who are repeatedly tested. As they face each challenge head-on, they are forced to re-examine their own lives and beliefs. Lessons abound around every turn. It’s a gripping, emotional read that sucks you into their story, while also making you think. I challenge anyone to read this without starting to analyze their own lives. Just be sure you have a box of tissues with you as you do it.This book is a follow-up to White Night. The lessons actually begin in that first novel, so it is recommended that you start with it to reap the full benefits.I received a copy of the book for review purposes only, positive review was not required.

The book was very thought provoking but also very down to earth. I became part of the story and the characters became like family. I laughed with them, cried with them and felt their pain. It began as the perfect life/love story and quickly became everyone's worst fear! It is really about complete selfless love. Kathi Haacke Morehead certainly has a way with words. She held my interest with each page, and it never wavered. I look forward to more books from this exciting new author!
