The fallout from what Davis dubs “the debacle” is extreme. She is vilified by the climbing community and the authorities, dropped by her top sponsors, and her marriage hits the rocks. Davis takes a break from her climbing career and explores a new pursuit of skydiving and, eventually, BASE jumping. Along the way, Davis finds a new sense of self and new love. Multiple photographs are interspersed throughout the text, and while its interesting to see Davis climbing, diving, and jumping, many of the images, at least in galley proof, run off the page or are too dark to be clearly understood. Davis’ heavy focus on her travails becomes somewhat exhausting, and the other characters remain two-dimensional. In addition, she devotes many pages to detailing her various jumps and climbs; this level of detail will appeal to fellow rock climbers and skydivers, but more casual memoir readers will have a harder time connecting to the content. --Eve Gaus

And though her particular situation might not be one everyone can identify with, her general quandary is: "Whatever might happen in life," Steph Davis writes, "whether I liked it or didn't like it, I could know one thing for sure: it would change. There was absolute certainty in uncertainty."Davis writes in a spare style, which you might expect from a woman who quit law school to pursue the ascetic, living-out-of-a-trunk lifestyle of a climber. She also writes with a refreshingly clean voice. Unlike many contemporary memoirs, you'll find nothing off-color within these pages. It's not a tell-all. She doesn't even mention her ex-husband's first name into well into her story. On the contrary, Davis is unfailingly modest about herself and kind about others.She includes more detail about climbing, wingsuits, skydiving and base jumping that most of us will ever need to know. But she also writes so poignantly about her beloved pooch, Fletcher, that it made me teary at times. "Fletch had a spirit so strong it put me to shame. I watched her closely...because she was showing me yet again the right way to live-never giving up, doing the best she could, with a smile on her face....She loved the moments of her life."All in all, Learning to Fly is a provocative, thoughtful memoir about finding the courage to name our fears, to face them down, and to always, always be willing to try something new.Thanks to Touchstone/Simon & Schuster for providing me a copy to review. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This book changed my life By Rick I was in a bad spot, rock bottom is over used but it's the only way to describe it. S***ty job that barely paid my rent, cheating girlfriend, morbidly obese, raging alcoholic. That was me, after reading this book it helped me realize that overcoming those problems was my way to happiness and I had no one to blame for my extreme depression and anger but myself. You can't control other people's actions, but you can control being around them or having them in your life and how you respond to adversity. This isn't just about skydiving (although once I lost the weight I tried it, AMAZING!!!!) it's about learning to be who you are and enjoy all that life has to offer. The ups and downs of your journey are just as important as where you end up. Fantastic read from start to finish.

Once you turn the last page, you just keep wishing for more By upthatrock After reading High Infatuation I was really looking forward to the next part of Steph Davis' adventures but didn't expect Learning to Fly to be as amazing as it is. Frankly, High Infatuation is a great read for a climber (and as a climber I totally loved it) but Learning to Fly is a great read for anyone. The book tells a story of growing as a person, at the same time being a proof of Davis' growing as a writer.Warning! Learning to Fly will make any dog lover weep for at least half an hour. It happened to me on a plane and it was quite embarrassing. Fletch is definitely my favourite character and I wish to one day meet a dog as wise as she was!Zofupthatrock.wordpress.com
