At the First Baptist Church of Maeby, Arkansas, the sins of the child belonged to the parents until the child turned thirteen. Sarah Jones was only eight years old in the summer of 1964, but with her mother Esther Mae on eight prayer lists and flipping around town with the generally mistrusted civil rights organizers, Sarah believed it was time to get baptized and take responsibility for her own sins. That would mean sitting on the mourner’s bench come revival, waiting for her sign, and then testifying in front of the whole church. But first, Sarah would need to navigate the growing tensions of small-town Arkansas in the 1960s. Both smarter and more serious than her years (a “fifty-year-old mind in an eight-year-old body,” according to Esther), Sarah was torn between the traditions, religion, and work ethic of her community and the progressive civil rights and feminist politics of her mother, who had recently returned from art school in Chicago. When organizers from the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) came to town just as the revival was beginning, Sarah couldn’t help but be caught up in the turmoil. Most folks just wanted to keep the peace, and Reverend Jefferson called the SNCC organizers “the evil among us.” But her mother, along with local civil rights activist Carrie Dilworth, the SNCC organizers, Daisy Bates, attorney John Walker, and indeed most of the country, seemed determined to push Maeby toward integration. With characters as vibrant and evocative as their setting, Mourner’s Bench is the story of a young girl coming to terms with religion, racism, and feminism while also navigating the terrain of early adolescence and trying to settle into her place in her family and community.

Mourner's Bench: A Novel, by Sanderia Faye

Review

“Mourner’s Bench takes us to a significant social crossroads yet avoids racial polarization through characters of equal complexity, with flaws and fine points and all-too-human motivations. All told, the novel offers a sure sense of its place and people, and a closer look at those who truly lived through the civil rights movement—a chapter in American history that still seems to be writing itself.”

—Foreword Reviews

“[A]n absorbing meditation on the meaning of religion in a small town as well as a keen-eyed perspective on the way one African-American community encountered the civil rights movement. An astute coming-of-age tale set against an all-too-relevant background.”

—Kirkus

“It’s Freedom Summer, 1964, in tiny Maeby, Arkansas, and three SNCC volunteers have come to town determined to integrate the public library and all-white school. They’re joined in their efforts by eight year old Sarah’s unconventional, hot pants–wearing mother. The efforts to introduce change divide the black community as many are determined to preserve the old order. Sarah finds herself caught in the middle of all this, first siding with her conservative grandmother and then, gradually, coming to see her mother’s point of view. Throughout she is guided by her wise great-grandmother, an early civil rights pioneer. Change is further visited on Sarah’s life when she determines to be baptized against her worldly mother’s wishes. Slurs, insults, and harassment from the local authorities threaten the movement, as do two disastrous fires. And then Sarah’s mother decides to run for city council. Faye’s novel is far too long and detailed as she seems determined to include every possible aspect of the civil rights movement on a local scale. Too, Sarah seems older—far older—than her years. Nevertheless, the book succeeds at dramatizing an essential era in American history and is a welcome addition to civil rights literature.”

— Michael Cart, Booklist

“Faye’s writing is detailed and descriptive, depicting moments that richly capture life in a small segregated and impoverished town. … Mourner’s Bench is a well-researched and commendable debut effort that expands and complicates the body of literature written about the Civil Rights movement by asking readers to lend equal consideration and weight to the roles age, gender, and religion played.”

—The Rumpus

From the Inside Flap

“With Mourner’s Bench, Sanderia Faye announces herself as a bold, at times intoxicating, original voice in American fiction. This is a stunning debut.” —Dennis Lehane, author of Gone Baby Gone, Mystic River, and Shutter Island

“Chapter by chapter, without ever seeming to struggle, Mourner’s Bench completely immerses us in small-town 1960’s Arkansas, a time and place of racial turmoil and social conflict that very much speaks to our own. Perhaps the greatest of the book’s many successes is the richness of its young protagonist, Sarah Jones, whose voice is so candid and whose difficulties are so involving that it’s impossible not to sympathize with her. As a result, your stance on the civil rights battle in which she finds herself embroiled evolves right along with hers, taking on unexpected nuances and complexities. Reading her story, no matter what you believe history might have taught us since, you feel as if the questions of racial justice are not only unresolved but barely yet asked.” —Kevin Brockmeier, author of The Brief History of the Dead

“Brilliantly written, Mourner’s Bench takes the reader back to 1960s small-town Arkansas and tells a story about the public and private ways that black and white people worked for or resisted change. A powerful, brilliant book.” —Vivienne Schiffer, author of Camp Nine

“Faye’s clear-eyed yet tender vision imbues this story of our difficult past with ringing hope for the future. This is a novel that lingers in your spirit like the bittersweet chords of a favorite song.” —Tayari Jones, author of Silver Sparrow and Leaving Atlanta

“A quiet tour de force, a story of innocence and coming of age, beautifully told and brimming with life.” —Rosalyn Story, author of Wading Home and More Than You Know

“Sanderia Faye’s portrait of life in a black community in rural Arkansas during the era of segregation is well-drawn, and her characters are unforgettable. The book is well-written and well-researched. It should be required reading for anyone seeking to understand a little-known chapter of civil rights history. This compelling novel will appeal to literary enthusiasts and history buffs alike.” —Jennifer Jensen Wallach, coeditor of Arsnick: The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in Arkansas

About the Author Sanderia Faye is a PhD candidate at the University of Texas, Dallas. She received an MFA from Arizona State University and a BS from the University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff. She is co-founder of Kimbilio Fiction, a Community of Writers of the African Diaspora. Mourner’s Bench is her first novel.

Highly recommend this engaging novel By Laura Mourner's Bench is a moving, beautifully written and constructed story about growing up in a small rural Arkansas town in the 1960's when powerful winds of change are swirling around the black community. It is told through the voice of unforgettable young Sarah Jones. Her struggles to make her own choices in the midst of the turmoil that divides her family and community will make you cry, laugh and stand up and cheer for her. She, and the other complex characters (particularly the women, who are the heart of the story), will stay with you long after you finish reading. I highly recommend it.Laura Foner

Griffin Dennis Lehan's words couldn't be more true about Sanderia Faye's Mourner's Bench... a stunning debut. Beautiful prose transports you back in time to small-town Arkansas to a time many would like to forget or believe never existed. Mourner's Bench provides a reader vivid contrasts between religion and the civil rights movement; matriarchs, pastors and city hall; etc. A beautiful coming of age story which should be noteworthy by anyone with any interest in southern history, the civil rights movement, and the influence of religion in politics.

From the Back Cover Excerpt from Enchanted Circles"I prepared myself for a restless night of obsessive thinking, but the opposite was true. I was about to slip under the spell of sleep when a soft rattle at the window jarred me awake. I sat up quickly and stared at the pane of glass a few feet away, and a strange thing happened. It started to move like liquid in its casement. At first, I didn't comprehend what was happening and thought I was dreaming, but when I refocused my eyes, I saw that the glass in the window was churning like a whirlpool, ever so slowly. I couldn't look away. With each ticking second, its movement became faster and more violent. I frantically scooted backward, until my back hit the wall. Next, a brilliant blue light flooded into the room like a raging river and washed away the shadows, leaving everything looking flat and lifeless. That's when I saw it. Out of  the center of the whirlpool, a child's face, obscured in a liquid mist, began to materialize and stared right into my eyes."Praise for Enchanted Circles"Medina has created a manuscript steeped in high fantasy and adventure. It harkens back to a time when there was a kind of innocence and magic in children's literature... He has written a story that is timeless and more importantly, on time. Enchanted Circles marks a milestone in Medina's journey..."   ~   Nathan Lee, OKC.net"Medina's freshman outing is clearly a labor of love. Even if this is not your favorite genre, you may just find yourself spellbound by Medina's passion for his characters, the divinity of his truth and the pure joy and wonder that is childhood adventure. Be a smart 'cookie' and get this one...then read it to the kids and grandkids!"  ~   J. Alexander Greenwood, author of the acclaimed John Pilate Mystery Series

As a story about a 12 year old boy and a magical adventure, it's simple honest and true. It's been a long time since I was 12, but I could relate to Zachs anxieties, fears and his hope that everyone and everything would be OK. I thoroughly enjoyed all the characters (even the evil ones). I loved the fact that the characters had personal flaws, but were filled with hope. It made me want to know more about their background and the adventures to come. All in all grea book. Can't wait to read the next installment.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Very good memoir By Jennie Goutet Okay, this book was hard for me to read because I love fidelity as much as the author loves Paris. I'm the one who wants to celebrate her 70th wedding anniversary with her husband (married at 30? might be a bit ambitious, but you get the point). That was the only reason I knocked off a star - totally personal, nothing to do with the writing. But in reading the book, I understood the writer. I was able to walk in her shoes and understand her decisions - truly understand them - which is the essence of a good memoir. Sobanet's writing is lucid and poetic as she speaks both about the beauty and delights she's rediscovering in her favourite country, but also about her soul-wrenching pain. My favourite parts of the book were actually when she hit rock bottom because that was something I could identify with, one battered soul to another, and I really rooted for her to overcome. The book had good "character" evolution. (What do you call that when it's a memoir)? The evolution of her heart and mind is evident, and I cheered at the victory in the last chapter.I think this book might be freeing for someone who has gone through a divorce, and perhaps even more so for someone who lives with her wings clipped.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A passionate and emotional memoir of the author's search for happiness By FrenchVillageDiaries This memoir, from one of my favourite romance authors, is the true tale of a hopeless romantic addicted to writing, travel and France who found herself in a marriage where she had to be someone she wasn’t for everyday life to tick over nicely, despite loving a husband who also loved her. One day she spread her wings, took off to experience freedom and to find the passion she could only write about, divorcing her husband and having an affair that gave her great highs but deep lows too. She is a good example of the torment of the creative mind who needed to flee what she feared was slowing killing her inner soul, but the price of freedom was high. It was not an easy journey, there were some very dark days for her when loneliness and depression zapped her of her energy and threatened her life. There were times when I felt very sad, times when I felt she was selfish and times I wished she would just stop making the wrong decisions and get on a plane to France, which she does numerous times throughout the book.Ultimately this book is a journey of discovery and recovery, where Paris and Lyon try their best to soothe her troubled mind and help her move forward to a happier place. She just needs to work out where to find this happiness; is it in France, in her marriage, in the arms of her lover or is there something else? Her writing certainly became very important in her healing process and this led to an emotionally charged memoir that contains some strong language and scenes of a sexual nature. At the end of the book I found myself wondering how I felt. She has slightly deflated my dream of the typical life I expected a romance novelist like Juliette Sobanet to be living, but I can’t help but feel privileged she has shared her real life with her readers. Characters in a novel have ups and downs before finding their happily ever afters, real life is a different story altogether. She will always be Juliette to me and I can’t wait for her to feel ready to write another chocolate filled romance set in France.I was sent a copy of this book for an honest review.

Such highs... with the love affair and the steamy scenes and then such lows with the death of a dear friend, divorce, & depression. This book is real life. I admire you for writing your story and finding yourself, revealing the true you! This is a story that I think most can relate to. Best book yet... you hit it out of the park with this one. I hope Paris welcomes you with open arms and you are able to start fresh in a familiar place. What an extremely tough couple of years you have had. Keep your head up... this book will help many who have been in your shoes.Such a raw book written by an imperfect human... this is real life. Decisions are hard, things don't add up or make sense and most of the time there is no fairy tale ending. In the end you all you have is yourself, and that is the person you need to fill up, find, and just BE. Such a great story on finding ones TRUE self and the real life trials and tribulations that take you there... Can't wait for the book of Poems!

Telling Tales is a short-story collection of entertaining, poignant, and sometimes humorous—tongue-in-cheek style—memoirs. It’s the author’s hope that his stories give a small reminder that all life experiences matter; even the bad ones. The fact is, we all have our bad days—and experiences. They are an intrinsic part of being human. To be able to reflect upon them and find humor within, is the key to a happy soul. He believes that being able dig out nuggets of a childhood long, long passed, or the years of life after—and examine it for all the good stuff—is the key to a happy future and a gold mind.

By Gatosqueak Normally I get irritated with multiple love triangles, but it just WORKS with the main character and the plot twists. Her conundrum in love interests and what choices to make regarding the future of her (or should be)kingdom and her powers makes a good read. Can't wait to continue the series. I love the fairy world the author has built and highly recommend the book for young adults and adults a like.

Alexia doesn't waste anytime once again capturing you and holding it til the very end.Her bind to Dylan remains and as time goes by her feelings for him grow, but are they real or only because of the bind that has been put on them because of Darren? Her travels bring her to someone she never expected to see again, an alliance to the queen, can she trust this new alliance or will they try to hurt her as they did before, or on the other hand are they truly there to help. Dylan is called away on a mission for the queen, she is left without him, but wait. There's Soap, standing in the wings as always. She just doesn't feel for him what she feels for Dylan, or does she? Should she give him a chance and open up her heart to him? Will evil prevail, will Dylan or Soap save the day? “One Asian Individual” follows Ruth Baja Williams's first memoir, “Detour Berlin,” which chronicles her experiences in Cold War Berlin. After returning to the United States, Ruth becomes an American citizen. She misquotes the words of the Pledge of Allegiance. She thinks “one nation indivisible” is “one Asian individual.” Ruth decides that what she thought she heard was accurate after all because the second half of her life is about discovering herself, her Asian self.

About the Author Although she was born in Manila, Ruth Baja Williams never lived in the Philippines. Leaving the land of her birth at age two, she was in California at the start of the Second World War. At the war's end, her father entered the Philippine Foreign Service. Now as the daughter of a Philippine diplomat, Ruth lived in Hong Kong, Djakarta, and Sydney. Undergraduate studies brought her to California, but Cupid lured her to Germany, where she spent twenty years. On returning to the United States, she realized she belonged everywhere and nowhere.

A memoir and love story By Tony Nino It’s hard to put Ruth Williams in a pigeonhole; in fact, to capture her, you’d need something more like a honeycomb. She was a citizen of the multicultural world long before multicultural was a word. The places she called home included Manila, Sydney, Augsburg, San Francisco, Hong Kong, Djakarta and Los Angeles, and that doesn’t even count her adventures in Berlin. This is her story – a story that began, and very nearly ended in the Philippines at the deadly onset of Japanese empire building. By luck, her Philippine diplomat dad was sent abroad to the safety of America, but the price Ruth paid for escaping the ravages of war, was a loss of any meaningful connection to any family. She grew up in a series of private boarding schools around the world.Hers is the story of a citizen of the world with no place to call home. However, rather than lament the loss of a traditional home and family, Ruth simply builds homes of her own using nothing but her imagination. Luckily for her readers, what she imagines is anything but simple. She didn’t just learn English, she learned two sets of accents and idioms – Australian and West Coast American – so well that when she spoke on the phone, listeners either pictured a sunny, tanned Sheila or a tall blonde Surfer Girl. And tall she was definitely not. “five foot and a half an inch (and don’t you dare forget that half inch).” She loved actually meeting those phone voices in person just to see the looks on their faces.Fiercely independent and essentially free of any family control, Ruth saw no reason not to fall in love and enter into an interracial marriage. However, in her family’s eyes, any marriage to any other race was a step down. And being darker, according to Philippine Folklore, meant that your race was the most inferior, because God had “burnt” those races in his heavenly oven. Charles was black.Naturally when it came to settling down, the first place that a black man and an “Asian” woman would pick would be Germany in the 50s. However, after the 2nd World War few Germans actually spoke openly about the politically incorrect “Arian Race,” because losing a war tempers ethnocentric nationalism. Of course white was still white and anything else was suspect… Except for the any member of the three Airlift nations that had kept Berliner families clothed and fed during the Russian Blockade. That love was especially true for Americans.Feeling welcomed, Ruth and Charles settled in “for a while” and experienced the post war history of Berlin: the building of the Berlin Wall, the machine gunning of East German Escapees, JFK’s “Ich Bin Ein Berliner” speech, Reagen’s “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!,” and eventually, the actual fall of the wall. In between the history, Charles became a stage and TV star, Ruth wrote and raised two children, and they both fell in love with a city surrounded by a wall with Russian forces on other side.Ruth weaves engrossing threads of heart, humanity and history. She lets us feel what she felt, so we can welcome both of the cities of Berlin, East and West, into our hearts as she did. She tells two love stories, of her life with Charles and her love of a city. She lets us listen in as she faces the unexpected people and events responsible for making a one- or two-year stay stretch into decades.Exciting, unnerving and at times unsettling, “One Asian Individual” invites us to join Ruth Williams on a journey to build the best family and home she could imagine.Enjoy her imagination at work.

Davis Ruth Baja Williams takes the reader on her personal journey as an Asian growing up and living in several countries, none of them the country of her birth. Her memoir is part travelogue, over time, from 1941 to 2015. It is not just her story as it holds a mirror to all those with whom she has interacted in that period. Her story is a timely contribution to writings on identity and self-discovery in this 21st century world when so many of its population are global citizens. The book raises questions for those of us secure in our national identities; those of us who have spent our lives in one country; those of us who have travelled the world and have always had a place to call home. National populations are changing rapidly through migration, through the willing or unwilling movements of people forced to relocate to foreign environments. Ruth Baja Williams’ incisive observations and honest reporting of her search for an identity serve as a reminder to all of us who have stayed home to expand our concepts of national identity; to put out the welcome mat, to look beyond a person’s physical appearance and accent, beyond their colour, sexual orientation, or whatever makes them different in our eyes.Thank you to Ruth for her willingness to share her sometimes painful experiences with honesty and a good dose of humour. Her skilful writing, vivid and lucid prose makes for a very good read.

It is a lyrically sensitive account of the author's continuing quest, during a lifetime spent in many diverse cultures and environments, to know who she truly is. The sense of place, so intrinsic in most of us, for her remains elusive. The reader travels with her in her search, which becomes a learning experience for both.

Four women create propaganda in WWII's darkest hour in this gripping fact-based debut novel for fans of The Night Watch and Charlotte Gray Buckinghamshire, 1942: in a gothic villa deep in woods near Bletchley Park, artist Vivienne Thayer paints "Black" propaganda to demoralize the enemy. Despite government restrictions, she enjoys her work—and finds time for a lover as well as her indulgent husband—but where do acts of subterfuge end? Meanwhile, in London, three women painters—Laura Knight, Faith Farr, and Cecily Browne—record wartime life. Instructed by the men in power, even Churchill himself, they must conjure up the bulldog spirit. But as the war's course turns and the lives of these artists collide, each must ask herself what truths and what lies they are prepared to tell, even to those closest to them.

Some wonderful artists By Ginny Although I really enjoyed this book I did find keeping track of the numerous characters -- some much more fully fleshed out than others who figure just as prominently -- difficult. Also, the plot which ties the various artists together is a bit far fetched. One fact that is really interesting is that besides the artists, several works of art (and their genesis) are briefly described. A British blogger has searched out paintings by some of the female artists who served as the models for the characters, and I've fallen in love with LAND GIRLS, PRUNING AT EAST MALLING by Evelyn Dunbar. One of her nephews has started a blog to fill in information and details of the latter part of her life. If you google Evelyn Dunbar you should find it.An appendix at the end detailing the actual paintings (even if just the names) and where they may be seen rather than just details of the artists would be really helpful. Also a cast of the characters or even a map of the Bletchly area would be useful as well. This first novel is a very good fictional account of a little known facet of WW II although the loosely strung plot is confusing. I would rate this book on the high side of 3 -- just slightly less than a 4.

"

On a cold November morning a fourteen year old paperboy was delivering his route when he saw a brightly wrapped package on the roof of a parked car. Curiosity got the best of him and when he picked it up it exploded, killing him instantly. This is the true story of the investigation of his murder and numerous other related murders which occurred over a fifteen year span. It shows how investigators were able to link the murders to one man, a motorcycle gang enforcer.

This story provides a comprehensive look into the criminal justice system and reveals not only it’s successes, but also it’s failures. From police officers to detectives to forensic experts to medical examiners to prosecuting attorneys to witnesses and even informants, everyone contributed. No one gave up!

It’s the story of how all the pieces were put together, the killer identified, and the case presented for prosecution. It also shows how one elected official became the biggest stumbling block to justice for all the victims.

And, being retired, he is willing to share stories about them and the people involved. After reading his book, I have to think that he is particularly willing to tell his story when he is really pissed off at how the legal system screwed one of cases right out of the water. "Justice Delayed" is one of those stories.I'm not going to spoil the story, which clearly deserves to be optioned by a major studio. I will, however, note that my reason for withholding the fifth star is the absolute shambles the editor made of the text. The author is a cop, and any editor worthy of that job description should know when to blue pencil exclamation marks. It's really criminal.Despite this flaw, Hinterthuer comes through with a truly first rate story. Highly recommended. For full disclosure, my mother suggested this book, and she lives near the author. She says he swears every word is true.

By Richard Farrow The story is factual, based on the experiences of a detective during his career of 29 years. It is down to earth, well written and a good read. The book seems to be a refreshingly honest account of the activities of some criminals and the efforts of the law enforcers to bring them to justice. True to life some investigations work out better than others. One unusual feature is the book is comprised of many short chapters, generally about 3 pages each. This does no harm to a book that I recommend as entertaining and easy to read. I read it over a week-end which is very unusual for me.The account leaves the reader with questions over the political aspects of the prosecution of criminals

By FJT I first became acquainted with the author some years ago at long distance (by E and phone) through a mutual friend we were assisting, and though we have never met, I felt that I knew something about him. However, after reading this, I can truly say that I learned a lot more than I had known or even suspected. When Roger first told me he was writing a memoir, I encouraged him to consider Kindle as I do most of my reading on E now. I am glad he took me up on it!First a few words about the author. Roger is, as noted, the "friend of a friend" and we have never met in person, though we have had a number of chats by E and phone over the years. At first acquaintance, he hardly seems to be the type to be a former hard-boiled detective who had worked on one of the longest and most difficult murder cases in his region. He is friendly, kind, and charitable, and is a musician who (as I learned from his book) originally had embarked on a musical career, playing and later teaching music - before embarking on a much grimmer career.I should also note that I am not usually a fan of police, detective, or mystery books or films, either fiction or non-fiction, and I read this book in spurts around my usual busy schedule. At first, I must admit that I started because of my personal knowledge of the author and a mild interest in his career. However, that soon turned to a deeper interest sparked by his plain, unadorned, and clearly factual recounting of one dedicated detective's attempts over a decade and a half (!) to solve a series of murders by a brazen killer, and his dogged determination not to let it go - even when his department and the system tried to get him to do so. Though the case often went cold and lay dormant, Roger never lost his desire to find, try, and convict a cold-blooded, ruthless, and utterly remorseless killer, who left a trail of bodies in his wake. After many years of stops, starts, and disappointments, and episodes and interactions of all kinds (both positive and negative) with local, state, and federal officers and officials (including incompetent, corrupt and downright criminal ones), Roger was finally able to collect enough "bits and pieces" of direct and peripheral evidence, testimony, and facts to mount an almost airtight case against the killer. What happened then was mind-blowing! While I won’t tell you the end, I will say it is well worth reading the whole story to get the entire picture.Roger left no stones unturned in telling the story to his readers, giving them “just the facts” (as his fictional predecessor, Sgt. Joe Friday used to say) - and he is obviously not afraid to let the chips fall where they may, while praising those who deserve it.This book is well worth a read, if only to remind us of the men and women across the nation who work long and hard to "serve and protect" - and to also remind us that while there are bad apples in almost every barrel, not all cops are bad or killers, and that many clearly, like Roger, take their oaths very seriously, and are honest, hard-working, and dedicated to trying to do a tough and often dirty and thankless job in a system that is often full of holes.

By cyborg73 "How We Fight" is comparably one of the most powerful, yet inspirational, stories that one can take the time to read. The author, clearly a deep-rooted family man, starts us at the very beginning with his upbringing, detailing every event from childhood into adulthood, that shaped and molded him into the man he is today. No doubt, these events gave him the ability to handle and deal with the tragic events that take place at the end of the story. "How We Fight" is a roller coaster ride of a story that inspires, as well as teaches us how to cope with the death of a child. A story about the author meeting strangers, even doctors, who came together and became his family outside of family. Not a book to be missed!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. What an inspiring story! By Danny L Deaube' How We Fight, as the title suggests is a book about fighting, a story told from the father's perspective. The book is about Caitlyn Bagnato, the daughter of the author, who while diagnosed with cancer, and given chemo treatments, developed into Hepatic Encephalopathy, at the age of fourteen. A rare form of cancer called Fibrolamellar Hepatocellular Carcinoma that affects 200 people a year, worldwide. It is a story about family, and their epic battle to save Caitlyn's life. Caitlyn's persistence in fighting to conquer this dreaded disease is very inspirational and touching story. A determined teenager and fighter from the very beginning, fought with strength, courage, and hope, until she lost her final battle with cancer at the young age of 15. I say lost, but in my opinion, she was a winner all the way, and so was the family!Joe Bagnato's book takes place in New York, and includes the bombing of the World Trade Center. His extremely well written book begins from his early life beginning at birth through his youthful years, and progresses with his marriage to his wife Georgine, and subsequent birth of their youngest daughter Hailee, who was born deaf. After diagnosis of Caitlyn's cancer, she and her family begin the fight. The author, wife and friends begin their research to find out as much as possible about the disease. Much of the later part of the story takes place in doctors' offices, hospitals, emergency rooms, and toward the end at home on hospice, a battle fought gallantly to the very end. This is one of those books when you finish, you do not soon forget. This is an emotional story and an easy read. Unfortunately, books such as this often get little publicity and easily overlooked. Life is not always rainbows and butterflies, and neither is this book. This book is about life, it has no fairytale ending. Sometimes you have to deal with what you are dealt, and this family has done just that! It is a message of hope! Since I lost a daughter myself at an early age, I could certainly understand the turmoil and daily stress associated with such events. I congratulate Mr. Bagnato, a gifted writer, for writing with such zeal and compassion. It is a story all should read, and by doing so, perhaps readers will appreciate their family in a fresh new way!I did feel the first five chapters, dealing with the author, parent's backgrounds, and his growing up years, distracted from the storyline. The mentioning of in-laws, relatives, while interesting, was in my opinion, unnecessary. This book is very detailed, in some cases, maybe too detailed. I thought there were too many non-essential characters written into the story, which broke up the continuity and flow. While I can relate to the abundance of medical terminology and jargon used, to the average reader, it may pose a problem. With that being said, I would highly recommend How We Fight, to all who dare to be touched. A warm and heartfelt thanks to Joe, Georgine, and Hailee for such a touching tribute in memory of your beloved Caitlyn Bagnato! Never give up! F.I.G.H.T. Family Inspires Great Hope Together, How We Fight!Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. What would you do if told your child had cancer? By Sandra Hawthorn Without a doubt, this book is an inspirational accounting of a family's journey with a child fighting cancer through the eyes of the father. It shares the highs and lows of every step within this journey and the devistating loss of a child. How a family can be inspired to go on with their lives after a loss so big. The author leaves nothing to the imagination, he clearly spells out every aspect of the family's life. I am surely hoping there will be a book number two in this author's journey.
