The Leviathans are loose in the world, and no place is safe. And yet one man must fight against all odds to set the wrong he did right.

The Leviathans have escaped the eternal hell into which they were banished by the Creator. The visions that the shamans receive are ambiguous but show that the world wouldn't be a safe place now that the leviathans roam in it. And yet, the Council of Magical Species doesn't want to do anything until they are sure of the facts. Magician Cole and Mira, the shaman, set out for China to discover the truth behind the visions. Murder. Lies. Dark magic. Betrayal and deceit. It's only when Cole loses Mira that he realizes that he has been set up, and in order to undo the wrong, he needs to retrace his steps and seek help from unexpected friends.

A thrilling page-turner By Kristine This is a race against time book that will leave you on the edge of your seat page after page, rated at FOUR STARS.Schwartz SynopsisThe world as we know it is in danger and only the great can save us. Hidden among us humans is a far more superior race of legends; magicians, vampires, shifters, shamans, and more. When the shamans have an unusual vision, the race against evil begins and only one man is brave enough to embark on this terrifying mission. Will he stop the Leviathan’s from escaping their God made prison? Or will the evil twists consume us all?Schwartz ThoughtsThis is the second novel that I have read from this author and again, I loved it. The beginning of his novel has a punch that pulls in the reader, and Maldonado has a gift of hooking his readers at the end of each chapter, making you unable to put the book down. His characters are really well written, believable, and loveable. The main character, Cole, is a magician on a race against time for the good of all. And this book just keeps you guessing until the very last pages. It took my emotions on a few rides. I wouldn’t say I was brought to tears, but my heart beat a little harder at a few parts. The conflicts were great. Maldonado’s detailing abilities are superb. The development of the characters was spot on. There was even a small romance tucked in all this chaotic plot. And to be honest, if you can successfully tuck in a romance in a horror filled battle against evil, well that is saying something. All in all, it was a great read. The RecommendationHorror readers, action readers, and supernatural/paranormal readers would enjoy this page turner.

Skirmisher: The Life, Times, and Political Career of James B. Weaver tells the story of a 19th-century politician whose two campaigns for the White House helped change the course of American politics. Weaver served three terms in Congress and ran twice for president, once as the nominee of the Greenback-Labor Party in 1880 and again as the Populist nominee in 1892, when he carried four states. He supported government ownership of the railroads, changes in monetary policy, a graduated income tax, and the direct election of senators. Deeply held religious principles guided Weaver s approach to politics, which he saw as a means of putting the principles of the Galilean in motion among men. This book, the first full-length biography of Weaver in almost 90 years, offers the reader a panoramic view of some of the great events of the 19th century the California Gold Rush, the Civil War, and presidential politics from the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 to the rise of William Jennings Bryan in 1896. Skirmisher also sheds new light on the role of religion in American politics and the influence of third parties in presidential elections. Winner of the 2009 Benjamin F. Shambaugh Award from the State Historical Society of Iowa. This annual award recognizes the book judged as the most significant book on Iowa history for the year.

Weaver, a proud son of Iowa who managed to play a critical but largely overlooked role in many political reform movements of the late 19th century. The real delight of this book is not so much in discovering Weaver himself, who, truth be told, seems to have been rather a self-righteous (albeit utterly sincere) prig, but in the vast tawdry panorama of Gilded Age politics. Mitchell clearly loves the period, and his concise and engaging prose displays his mastery of all its sordid details. As we follow Weaver's political evolution from Democrat to Republican to Greenbacker to Populist (and partly back to the Democrats), we encounter themes that still resonate today, such as the malleable ideologies of the major parties, the pervasiveness of corruption, the shifting politics of race relations, and the excesses of financial capitalism. While only a few kooks still care about temperance or free silver, others of Weaver's highly-principled crusades seem sadly familiar, and the reformers' touching faith in the power of the federal government to promote the welfare of the common man is striking. Readers of the investing class may delight in General Weaver's many failures and scorn the simplicity of his beliefs, but there is a new reformer on the scene who got his start in Iowa . . .

Mitchell. Mitchell is fascinated with the underdog fighting ahead of his time on issues that will come, ultimately, to define the 20th Century and beyond in American politics. He is also keen on reviving our knowledge and the reputation of a great "almost was," James B. Weaver, civil war hero, congressman and third-party presidential candidate in an era of notorious corruption (Grant's presidency; the stealing of the election of 1876). A primogenitor and mentor to William Jennings Bryan, it was Weaver who devoted his career to fighting the gold standard and the cabal of robber baron bankers and their political lackeys who enabled them to starve development among farmers, merchants and the working classes with their dominion over credit. The misbehavior of banks echoes loudly and ironically today; the lesson is clear--greed and corruption will find a way. Mitchell's pure skill as a writer brings the elements of biography and history to vivid life. He shares the fruits of his nonpariel research in lucid, colorful sentences that betray his delight in the now-quaint sensibilities of the Progressive Era, where Temperance was a major issue and the viciousness of personal attacks in the political arena make today's campaigns seem tame. We owe a debt to Mitchell for rekindling our awareness of this seminal figure in such an engaging and pertinent book.

Iowa Statesman By Janice This is a highly readable, enjoyable, biography about James Baird Weaver, 1833-1912, a statesman from Iowa who always spoke his mind and had some before-his-time ideas about government. He was a member of Congress in the times when debate would get wild and wooly and he went to the point of fisticuffs when another member began hurling personal insult. An editorial by the Des Moines Register about the incident stated that if there was another such incident, General Weaver need not return to Iowa....unless he soundly thrashes the other Congressman! Mitchell's book is the first researched biography written about Weaver since 1919 and he presents scholarly research in a highly readable way. The gold vs silver controversy makes sense to me after reading this book.

The 2014 Royals fell just 90 feet short of tying the game against the San Francisco Giants in Game 7 of the World Series, so it was quite a feat to come all the way back from that in 2015 and have the goal of finishing with a World Series win-- and then actually do it. Taking the Crown details not only several of the key moves for the Kansas City Royals, but also takes us through many of the key parts of the 2015 season in general, most importantly the moments that really signified an epic season. What I liked about the book is how it explored the many ups and downs just within the postseason. The book also does a good job of detailing the character of the Royals, and their "never quit" attitude, and their motto "Keep the line moving." . A great read for any Royals fan!

Nine thousand suns ago, a race of immortal warriors came from the stars through a rare alignment and stepped onto the world of Math, a world much like their own, a perfect place for a backwater outpost from which to fight their ancient war. The realm they claimed came to be known as Dyrregin, Gateway of the Gods. They call themselves the Fylking. Unseen by all save those sensitive to the Otherworld, the Fylking taught seers to build and ward over the Gate, an interdimensional portal spanning the realm like a sigil shining on the surface of the world. The Fylking’s enemies, pitiless beings who think nothing of annihilating a world to gain even a small advantage, are bent on destroying it. They succeeded once, leaving Dyrregin in abandoned desolation for a thousand suns. Twelve centuries have passed since the Fylking returned. Dyrregin is at war. Seers are disappearing and their immortal guardians are blind, deceived by their own kind. A Gate warden with a tormented past discovers a warlock using Fylking magic to gather an army of warriors that cannot die. A King’s ranger who defends the wilds of the realm is snared in a political trap that forces him to choose between love and honor. And a knitter touched by the gods catches the eye of a dark immortal with no name and the power to summon storms. Forced to find allies in unlikely places, these three mortals are drawn into a maelstrom of murder, treachery, sorcery and war, fertile ground for both their personal demons and those of their immortal masters, who cast long shadows indeed. When they uncover the source of the rising darkness, they must rally to protect the Gate against a plot that will violate the balance of cosmos, destroy the Fylking and leave the world of Math in ruins. The god they serve is as fickle as a crow.

Outpost (The Fylking Book 1), by F.T. McKinstry

Review "The strongest aspect of Outpost is unquestionably its writing.  The prose is polished and knowledgeable. McKinstry's excellent description is both fluid and elegantly simple, and it paints an effective picture of settings, events, and characters. All in all, McKinstry's book proves to be one of the best independently published fantasy novels of the past year. Tense, gritty, exciting, and romantic, Outpost is a tale avid fantasy readers won't want to miss." - Self-Publishing Review "This is a novel that will get your heart racing and make you bite your nails. The tension was palpable, the dialogues were crisp and the characters were real, despite having powers. They had human flaws that made them approachable and understanding." - Rabia Tanveer, Readers' Favorite "Outpost is a richly described fantasy world that I could immediately envision. McKinstry does an excellent job of describing the characters and the landscape with such detail that I felt as if I was immersed in the world. I was amazed at the skill needed to keep the characters' stories separate and unique. I enjoyed this story thoroughly." - Anna Smith, Readers' Favorite "Outpost (The Fylking Book 1) by F.T. McKinstry is an entertaining epic fantasy novel with a unique and distinctly new world sure to entertain anyone who is a fan of the genre. Great story, I really enjoyed it! I'm looking forward to reading more books in this series." Ryan Jordan, Readers' Favorite

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Full of creatures! By L. K. Evans This is a really hard book to summarize. I’d have to lamely say it’s about some new bad guys that pop up and our good guys try to figure out who/what they are. I mean, that’s really bad. There’s a lot going on in this book, a lot of character growth, a lot of character confusion and mystery.I have to start by saying if I had a map, I might have loved this a bit more. My problem is that our group travels to, or talks about, lots of places. Because I’m visual, I had one hell of a time imagining where they were at any given time, which hindered my understanding of certain timelines and events. To make matters worse, there’s a lot of terms thrown out very early on in this book, and if you don’t pay attention you’ll be lost. If I had felt more grounded in the story, I could have easily loved this book. As it was, I found myself lost one too many times.Normally those negatives would end up lowering my rating farther, but I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the world. There’s ghouls and Fylking and elves and goblins and so many other things that I can’t remember them all. The world has as much going on as the story; tons of nuances and a wide range of creatures. There’s gates that lead to other worlds and, if broken, allow in a variety of creatures. Wardens protect them, along with their Fylking guardians. Those creatures were very interesting indeed. As for characters, I liked them all, which is rare for me. Millie was a free-spirited woman living in a village where one of the gateways I mentioned earlier exists. She’s got a power we don’t initially understand, but it was delightful and frightening to see it grow. Archmael was my favorite character, probably because the poor guy kept getting pushed into a direction he didn’t want to go, no matter how much he fought it. Forced to a life as a warden, it was easy for me to relate to his battle between his love of solitude and his need for companionship. Othin was a ranger; your typical good looking, womanizing hero. He does have a love who owns his heart, regardless of his frivolous sex life. I think the reason I liked him was because his scenes had the most action.Pacing was okay in this book. I’d have liked some of the explanations to be spread out, delivered at more pertinent times. A few info dumps had me glazing over, which probably explains why it took effort for me to grasp all that was happening. There was a lot of imagery in this book, and sometimes it slowed things down for me. Regardless, I did enjoy the writing.Overall, I’d say anyone who likes a plethora of creatures should definitely pick this up. I highly suggest paying attention in the beginning—no matter how arduous it is to you—so the rest of the book makes sense. I certainly wish I had taken my time with it.EDIT: I just looked at the author's website and there is a map available. Rather beautiful too. I really wish it would have been in the book. Smith Outpost, Book One of The Fylking, the author’s meticulously crafted new fantasy series, is a truly masterful achievement. The Fylking are powerful, otherworldy beings who use the planet Math as a portal to numerous planes of existence where they battle the mysterious and deadly Niflsekt. While respected and feared among the people of Math, the Fylking are also distant and abstract, and the novel creates a wondrous sense of human beings battered by unknown forces beyond their comprehension, playing out their own conflicts with a disturbing yet fully accepted belief that godlike beings always have the final say and may be manipulating humans to their own ends.Book One focuses on three excellently drawn main characters, who anchor and make concrete the novel’s world-building: Arcmael, a warden tasked with being an intermediary between humans of Math and the Fylking; Melisande, a knitter who begins to understand that the “pattern sense” she weaves is actually ancient magic with more power than she ever suspected; and Othin, Melisande’s lover, a warrior and King’s ranger who becomes a renegade to escape a dreary political marriage with his boss’s manipulative daughter.Constantly encountering serious trouble against the background of coming war, each of these characters has limitations and powers which they must face up to during their adventures. These aren’t just stereotypical fantasy characters or superheroes who always know exactly what to do. Their past defines them but they are open to vast future change. They learn about themselves and discover new strengths even as conflicts erupt many levels above their understanding. The three are multi-layered personalities, products of their culture, subject to its traditions and with their own psychic shadows. The novel has a sensuous, visceral, you-are-there feel. The settings and plot are well-wrought but never overdone. As you suffuse yourself in the complex characters, the background of the coming of war and the history of Fylking involvement on this planet unfold effortlessly. The bad characters are also very real, again not overdone, acting from ambition and power impulses not so different from what we encounter in real life, so that when they oppose our main characters, their actions are all ring true.I have no idea what lies in store for the second book, but the thoroughly satisfying ending does beg for more investigation of the Fylking. There is an epic structural sense about this series already apparent in Book One. The Fylking have been demonstrated to be central to this book, but in many ways they’ve been backstage during the narrative; thus we look forward to further revelations in Book Two, and we sense it won’t be a mere sequel, that the author has much more to unfold about this intriguing planet and its uncanny gateways to other worlds.Review by Michael D. Smith

A Fascinating Tale By Fantasy Book Lane War is lurking and evil is brewing, and three unlikely allies must come together to stop it.This is a fascinating tale, full of creatures one doesn’t encounter every day. My personal favorite were the draugrs, an underused Norse version of zombies. But these guys are way cooler than zombies. They’re tough and evil, and something to be feared, awakened by the hand of an evil sorcerer, my absolute favorite type of villain.Melisande was definitely my favorite of the characters. She is self-sufficient, smart, and finding her way around the magic she didn’t quite know she could use. With her ability, she’s able to knit spells into clothing, something straight out of a fairy tale. I have no idea if that has been used before, but I can’t recall reading anything like it. For me, it was new and fresh and definitely unexpected.Arcmael comes second on my list of the three main characters. He’s genuinely likable and relatable, being forced into his profession by an overbearing father. He doesn’t quite fit his role as a warden, but he has begrudgingly accepted it. He was real to me and very believable. He gained several notches for me when he made a personal sacrifice to save a friend whom he hadn’t known long. It showed what kind of a person he is, that he’s willing to do what it takes to put things right, and I liked that about him.Othin was all right, but not my favorite. His early chapters have too much about his womanizing, boobs, and hookers. That’s all well and good and served to show what kind of man he is. It just didn’t make me like him. Though his dedication to Millie is admirable. He grew on me a little as the story went.Rich and beautiful descriptions of the landscape and characters really stood out in this story. I could picture myself there. I love it when I’m allowed to live in a fantasy world, even one as messed up as this place becomes. The action moves a little slow at first, but toward the end it’s very hard to put this book down.I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is the remarkable true story of a young German boy, born in Werschetz, Yugoslavia, who narrowly escaped capture by the Russians; his courageous fight for survival during and after WWII in a refugee school camp, and his incredible journey to freedom, immigration, and the opportunity to live the American Dream. With the Russian front closing in, the order they hoped would never come was given: Evacuate! Evacuate! On the morning of October 1, 1944, Rudy Seamayer, along with hundreds of other children ranging in age from eight to fourteen, accompanied by a few teachers, waved goodbye to their families and friends as the train slowly pulled out of the Werschetz station. Parents stayed behind willing to sacrifice their own lives to save the lives of their children. The train had only been gone a short time when relative calm turned to complete chaos and fear. With the deafening sound of the whistle and screeching brakes, the train finally came to a frightening abrupt stop just at the edge of the mighty Danube River. The Bridge! The Danube River Bridge near Belgrade had been destroyed. They were left with no other choice but to abandon the train with all their food and supplies onboard, and somehow, get across safely to the other side of the traitorous Danube. This was only a prelude to the many struggles for survival they’d face during and after the war. After the war, there was no food, no one knew where their parents or families were or even if they had survived and there was no one to turn to for help. That’s when occupying US troops stepped in to save countless children from starvation and neglect. Rudy, at fourteen years old, made his mind up there and then he'd someday go to America and become a US soldier. Each step of his journey from then on; the search for his family, the continuation of his education and going through the long immigration process brought him closer to living his dream.

By Patrica L Kuhn I am an older American who recently married and moved to England. I taught English Lit. and quite a bit of history with it in Texas for 23 years, but when I moved here, I found I knew only a small bit of how it was for Europeans during the war--until now, the stories were just stories I had read or heard and lived from afar during my early childhood. Between my husband, who is 83 now, and this book by the Seamayers, and the accurate, but little-known history included to remind me of the timing, I am becoming increasingly aware of the terrible destruction of the human spirit, as well as the waste of life and treasure, were the World Wars in the early 20th Century from a distinctly more personal view--it is seeping into my blood and bones. As Rudi gives his account of what happened to him as a German child taken from his family in his horrific escape from Yugoslavia, he just seems to take it all in his stride, while showing a normal boyhood proclivity for finding ways to have a spot of slightly naughty boyhood fun with his companions, and an ability to recognize and be thankful for the good things people did for him. Because of this extraordinary ability and his grateful heart (along with self-discipline and hard work) he made his idea of the American Dream a reality. No place in his story did he descend into self-pity. Perhaps the most beautiful thing about the book is the strength and joy that he found even in times of terrible fear and running just ahead of Stalin's Russians in a war that no young person (or any person, for that matter) should have to face in life!

By Amazon Customer Astounding ability of a generation of German children to emerge from debilitating circumstances as sane and productive human beings.Enjoy your read of a teenager thinking he was leaving on a short trip, only to be faced with the perils of war. All things, during this time, worked together to create his destiny. Enjoyed the book.

It's a page turner for sure and very easy to read. I knew that I loved my country before, but now I've deep gratitude for her welcoming Mr. Rudi Seemayer all those years ago. Because of Rudi's dreams and determination I have one of my dearest and longest friends Karen Seamayer Ross. Was it so riveting to me because I know the family? I doubt it, as this story has left me thirsty for more, surely 134 pages isn't enough to tell it all. Thank you to Kay and Rudy for this history book, how grateful your children and grands must be to have it. I highly recommend this book which is available on amazon. My only other hope is that Mr. Rudy will sign my copy some day soon.

A perfectly guided intro By Ilya J Lovell This guide is easily digestible but with a level of depth that doesn't leave you trying to fill in the gaps. Covering essential theory through to progressively challenging practical exercises, you really get a grasp of how everything ticks. You get started with a grounding in the physics before giving you a handle on all the different drone terminology and components to get you started. The practical exercises to master flight control and safety are really well thought out - by the end of it, you'll know your stuff, and have the skills to match. The companion mobile app is pretty cool too!

Scott Guy was a good man, a great dad, a salt-of-the-earth farmer who was gunned down at his front gate for no conceivable reason. His death enthralled us, partly because it was so inexplicable, but also because there were no obvious suspects. When police finally arrested someone, public fascination soared - because the person they claimed killed Scott Guy was his brother-in-law, colleague and former mate, Ewen Macdonald. While on the surface a hardworking husband and father of four, it gradually emerged Macdonald had an alter-ego and alternative life of violence and retribution. The police case against him seemed so logical: Ewen Macdonald was aggrieved, anxious and angry - and secretly hated the person who'd been best man at his wedding, Scott Guy. So Macdonald meticulously planned to get rid of Scott and shot him as he headed to work. But despite enormous media coverage, the reality is that most of us still know very little about the case. To understand what really happened and why it happened, you need to set aside what you think you know and start over again, from the beginning, from that first dark midwinter morning.Who Killed Scott Guy? takes you inside the investigation, into the courtroom and tells the real story behind Ewen Macdonald's defence, led by Greg King. By the end you'll know everything the jury did - and much more.

Fascinating account, too one-sided in favour of Macdonald being innocent By Joan Burley Those of us living in New Zealand have been bombarded with newspaper articles about the murder of this young farmer. Mike White, a reporter for North and South magazine, gives a gripping and detailed account, but in the end no one can answer the question in the title, and he doesn't either. What he does do is excuse the behaviour of Ewen Macdonald, and make this cold blooded creature who battered young calves to death with a hammer, and who can lie convincingly to the police, seem to be an innocent victim. Whether Macdonald was guilty or not, he has psychopathic tendencies and he is not a sweet, gentle victim of the police. A fascinating book, but too one- sided in favour of Macdonald.

Very interesting analysis By Amazon Customer As the blurb puts it "Scott Guy was a good man, a great dad, a salt-of-the-earth farmer who was gunned down at his front gate for no conceivable reason." "His death enthralled us, partly because it was so inexplicable, but also because there were no obvious suspects."It's embarrassing that when a book like this comes along, you realise that for a case that gripped the nation of New Zealand, there's been little or no information about it in these parts. And that's particularly disappointing when you think of the forensic detail thrown at us from other parts of the world - I mean New Zealand is our nearest neighbour and this is such a very sad story.Handled with great delicacy, Mike White has written an analysis of the case, the death of Scott Guy, his life and the charging and acquittal of his brother-in-law Ewen Macdonald. He also provides glimpses into the devastation of the lives of everyone around Guy and Macdonald, and the mess that both families are left trying to negotiate. It also provides a telling portrayal of a defence team - in particular the barrister Greg King who successfully defended Macdonald, and the particularly devastating outcome for him. Must admit, this reviewer found herself genuinely distressed at the fate of Mr King. The blurb for this book finished with the line "By the end you'll know everything the jury did - and much more." Alas there still has been no successful prosecution over the death of Scott Guy, and WHO KILLED SCOTT GUY? provides the reader with a very clear picture of how that must feel for everyone involved. Highly recommended if for no other reason than this is an extremely well written, well researched, well told story.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Book is a shocker By AndrewSK The book laboriously covers why MacDonald can't be guilty from the defence viewpoint. However it misses coverage of critical prosecution evidence. For example it has one line near the end about a farm future plan that has Scott mentioned but not MacDonald. It does not explain or expand on this key line of evidence. When did MacDonald see the plan? Who saw his reaction etc. We are told nothing about this, yet the farm inheritance is of critical importance. The book is heavily biased and the evidence pointing to guilt is given light treatment. The book even concludes MacDonald had "moved on" and felt "remorse" for burning down the house and then vandalising the new one, killing the calves with a hammer, dumping thousands in milk and burning down a treasured family hunting shed. It follows King's brilliant defence, making him "look" like a normal guy. There is no evidence that MacDonald feels remorse - he certainly never fessed up. Actually at the end of the book we have the same line where MacDonald hopes he can meet up with the Guy family and laugh over the old times. This shows he actually lacks an understanding of human emotion. The author also nitpicks the police work, primarily by arguing that it was risky and difficult to commit the crime in the time available. The risk of burning down a house and smashing another up metres from your own house didn't bother MacDonald. Nor did killing the neighbours calves. These hugely risky crimes don't phase the author. The murder - that was too risky - he'd be caught.Don't buy this book!

Practical Atlatlry of the Four Corners is a guidebook for those interested in crafting their own Basketmaker style atlatl and dart sets. While the focus area of this book is the Four Corners region of the American Southwest, atlatls and darts of similar form were much more widespread, being found over much of western North America. Full of photographs, drawings, and tutorials, this book will assist in the creation of a Basketmaker style toolkit which will be tailored to the user, and if well treated will serve them for many years. A complete guide, this book contains instructions for all aspects of atlatl and dart construction, from dart shafts to field points, fingerloops to fetish bundles.

Bar raising text on the topic By Amazon Customer Books on atlatl construction are somewhat difficult to rate and review, there are so few books covering the topic that doing a comparative analysis is almost impossible. Most of those texts are devoted to the modern sport side of the topic, they rarely touch on recreating traditional atlatls and when they do the supporying evidence is so scant that it's obvious that the author is doing little more than making wild guesses based off of personal gleaming gained from one or two photos found in an outdated book or text. This book, however, is a very well compiled text with a great amount of instructional information gained from first hand examination of actual artifacts as well as vast amounts of experimentation with exacting replicas of those artifacts. This is, without a doubt, the most comprehensive guide to creating Basketmaker style atlatls and darts, it is not without some issues though. While the drawings and written text are clear the photos could have used a bit of tweaking. It's obvious that the photos were taken in color and converted to grayscale for the book. Unfortunately they seem to recieved very little alteration after this and at times it is very difficult to make out details (this is especially so in regards to the instructions on making the finger loops). A touch of alteration to both brightness and contrast could have done wonders for many of the photos.I also felt that the dimensional information could have been laid out in an easier to digest way. Perhaps with the dimensions accompanying drawings of the artifacts, or photos of replicas, as opposed to all of the numbers simply being compiled into a table. The pages dealing with customizing size based on the maker/users personal dimensions were nice, yet they only touched on length and completely ignored any other dimension. It would have been nice to have seen this hypothesis carried out to its fullest to include measuring for both distal and proximal width. The section on dart construction and system tuning alone make this book worth the price. So few instructional guides thoroughly touch on this topic leaving the reader to experiment on their own and waste time with multiple dead ends and failures. All in all this book is without comparison and well worth the price. I will definitely be suggesting it to anyone interested in atlatls and "primitive" technology.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. i really liked this book By r. kretz i really liked this book. it is exactly what it advertises to be: a practically focussed introduction into the making and usage of atlatl equipment, rooted in archaeological practise, and exemplified by the style of basketmaker culture artefacts. the book teaches you the general working principles of atlatls (but without lengthy ruminations on the physics of it, let alone formulas etc.), how to make them (based on a selection of basketmaker artefacts), and how to use them. it does so in a very accessible way, easy to grasp for everyone coming at the subject with little or no previous knowledge. i also really like the author’s precision: there is never any doubt where a bit of information came from: studying artefacts, personal experience, modern atlatl practise, interpretation, or speculation – this is something a lot of authors would do well to emulate.i came at this book with some previous knowledge and experience in making wooden bows, and a general notion of what atlatls are and how they work. what i gained was a better general understanding of atlatls – good enough to feel oriented when looking up discussions on the internet –, a solid handful of ways to make myself a set of equipment, and the definite drive to do so ASAP. what more can i ask?the only thing i, personally, would have liked to read, is a bit of stylistic context of basketmaker atlatls vs other artefact sources – but not only is this slightly beyond the book’s scope (and the author is to be lauded for staying true to it so well!), it is also not that hard to research on my own, and i feel well-enough equipped to do so, thanks to the knowledge the book gave me.

Mr Garnett delivers, big time. The photos and descriptions of how to make Basketmaker style finger loops are worth the price of purchase, not even considering the rest of the book.I've been following Mr. Garnett's work online for years, and I'm happy to say that his first book continues his trend of careful research, creative experimentation, and well thought out conclusions based on practical use of his hand crafted tackle. This book should be in every primitive skills enthusiasts library. I intend to offer it as a supplementary text in my atlatl workshops.Although the book mainly covers the atlatls and darts of a specific cultural area, it is a great introduction to atlatlry for beginners, as well as a reference for experienced atlatl makers and users. If you aren't into primitive skills, but know someone who is, I highly recommend it as a gift. Using this book as a guide, anybody with minimal hand crafting skills should be able to make their own atlatl and darts, and start to learn to throw, troubleshoot problems, and enjoy the growing sport of atlatlry.

The prowess and loyalty of the great knight William Marshal have been rewarded by the hand in marriage of Isabelle de Clare. William has weathered the difficult years of King Richard’s absence on crusade and is currently serving him on campaign in Normandy. But the stability William and Isabelle have enjoyed comes crashing down as Richard dies and his brother John becomes king. Rebellion stirs throughout the Angevin domains, and William and Isabelle distance themselves in Ireland. As the situation escalates, William steers an increasingly precarious path that will lead him, eventually, to the rule of a country in desperate straits, with Isabelle walking with him every step of the way.

The Scarlet Lion, by Elizabeth Chadwick

From Publishers Weekly William Marshal returns in this sequel to The Greatest Knight with the older and wiser William well settled with his wife, Isabelle de Clare, and their ever-growing brood. However, he is now in uneasy service to King John, who suspects William for his ties to John's late brother Richard I, but cannot openly despise the powerful earl's allegiance. Still, ever spiteful John systematically strips William of titles, power, honors, and even his son, Will, who the king demands as his squire. Then John dies suddenly, and William must take the rebellious kingdom in hand and assume the regency. Chadwick delivers another accomplished historical, albeit without the thrills of its predecessor. Like William, the story is too settled and comfortable to be as exciting as the story of the young knight on the rise, but the in-depth exploration of the intrigues of King John's court is riveting. Isabelle remains a powerful noblewoman and excellent match for William. This will be best appreciated by fans of Chadwick's other work or readers curious to learn more about medieval England. (Mar.) This novel opens in 1197 and depicts the turbulent times around the reigns of King Richard I and King John. While following the life of William and his wife Isabelle, we are treated to a finely depicted view of the politics, intrigue and events of medieval England and Ireland. The novel is multi-faceted: it enables us to relate to William and Isabelle as two human beings who needed to balance their own needs and those of their family with the code of honour and political constraints of the day. At the same time, the known historical facts are woven into the story in a way that breathes life into history and will have many readers wanting to know more about the actual events depicted. And while those readers are learning more about the history, I have been provided with another hero worthy of my admiration.Brava, Ms Chadwick! Few authors have ever made medieval history as interesting to me as you have.Highly recommended.Jennifer Cameron-Smith

By Tamela Mccann Unable to wait for the American release, I had to pick up Elizabeth Chadwick's newest novel, The Scarlet Lion, from Amazon.uk as soon as it was available. And I am so glad I did! This is one author who continues to give us quality historical fiction that will leave you breathless and eagerly awaiting her next venture.Elizabeth Chadwick has given us a gift---the sequel to her outstanding novel, The Greatest Knight. The Scarlet Lion picks up the life of William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke and eventual Regent of England in the early 1200s. To say that this man was more than a mere knight would be an understatement of the first order, and would be a disservice to the writing skills Ms. Chadwick displays so well.Where should I begin in describing this magnificent novel? Maybe I will start with William's accomplishments, all of which were almost unheard of for someone who had to make his own way in life. Or perhaps I should begin with the cast of characters who populate this tale, among them Richard the Lion Heart, King John of Magna Carta fame, and the young Henry III who was placed in the care of Marshal upon the death of his father. But starting with those would take away the heart of the novel: the uncommon relationship between William and his wife, Isabelle. William, in a time when women were basically chattel, cherished his wife and listened to her counsel. Ms. Chadwick has taken all of these historical facts and woven them into one grand tapestry that brings Marshal to life and inserts him into your heart, mind, and soul. Her research is impeccable, and her gift of phrase will make you want to slow down while reading so as to savor every word.To those who are lovers of good fiction, this is one of the best and truly deserving of a widespread audience. To those who are lovers of historical fiction, I can say with complete assurance that this will be a book you will treasure forever. Ms. Chadwick's skill in recreating the past pulls you into the story immediately, and won't let you go once you close the book. Highly, highly recommended.

This is a wonderful tale of one of the most honorable men to grace this earth, William Marshal and his true partner in all things, his wife Isabelle. The first novel, Greatest Knight, covered more of William Marshal's early life as a knight and courtier. This novel covers his life with Isabel and the dangers and terrors of living in the court of the King John, and then as regent for the young Henry III. I have to admit shedding more than a few tears at the last chapter, the end of William's life.I have read all of this author's works that I can get my hands on and I am amazed at how consistly she is improving (not that the earlier works were poorly written at all). As always with Chadwick's books, the way she brings the medieval period to life in such a graceful and effortless way, be it the sights, sounds, smells, food, clothes and battles is just awesome. As quoted on some of her book jackets, the next best thing to time travel. Five stars.
