What started as a baseball season like any other became the most thrilling sports story of 2015Canada’s team began the season with as many losses as wins, but things changed rapidly. With inspired moves by management at the trade deadline, and a bullpen rally not seen since the back-to-back championships of 1992 and 1993, they were back on top.   The boys in blue went on to score 891 runs—127 runs more than the next best team—and finished with a superb record from the trade deadline onward. When they clinched a play-off spot, Toronto was ecstatic. When they took the division title, beating their long-time AL East rivals in New York, fans everywhere cheered with excitement and support. And, in their first post-season appearance in 22 years, the entire country erupted in celebration.   Here, in this special commemorative book, relive the entire spectacular 2015 run—from the outlook at training camp and the struggle of the early season, to the brilliant trades, to the stellar run to the post-season. And, yes, the game five drama against Texas. Beautifully illustrated with action and candid photographs, and with exclusive content from the Toronto Star, this is the must-have book for every fan.   Content previously published by the Toronto Star.

Excerpt from The Supply at Saint Agatha'sAt the crossing of the old avenue with the stream of present traffic, in a city which, for obvious reasons, will not be identified by the writer of these pages, there stood - and still stands - the Church of Saint Agatha's.The church is not without a history, chiefly such as fashion and sect combine to record. It is an eminent church, with a stately date upon its foundation stone, and a pew-list unsurpassed for certain qualities among the worshipers of the Eastern States. Saint Agatha's has long been distinguished for three things, its money, its music, and its soundness. When the tax-list of the town is printed in the daily papers once a year, the wardens and the leading parishioners of Saint Agatha's stand far upwards in the score, and their names are traced by slow, grimy fingers of mechanics and strikers and socialists laboriously reading on Saturday nights.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Otherwise Engaged, by Eileen Goudge

From Booklist There is something seductive about spinning out elaborate fantasies around the age-old question, "What if?" Glamorous new lies replace unsatisfying old ones, all problems magically find solutions, and the success that had been elusive falls easily into place. For best friends Jessie and Erin, the question gets asked--and answered--in earnest when Erin's husband leaves her and Jessie's new romance suddenly cools off. What if, asks Jessie, a freelance writer struggling to make it in Manhattan, I'd never left Arizona? What if, wonders Erin, an innkeeper still living in Willow Creek, I'd gone to New York and become a chef? When Jessie proposes they trade places for six months, their unconventional escape allows both women to find out if the proverbial grass really is greener. Creating strong, resourceful heroines is what Goudge does best, and both loyal fans and new readers alike will be thoroughly captivated by the unique adventure Jessie and Erin embark upon, and what they discover by journey's end. 10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Dare to Ask: What if??? By Lisa Pools How many times have you wanted something your best friend had? Or thought, "If I had her life..."? In Eileen Goudge's wonderful Otherwise Engaged, NY journalist Jessie Holland gets to live out these fantasies-- and learn a lot about life, love, and herself in the process. Jessie is a great chracter-- she is dynamic and interesting, and I really couldn't help but root for her throughout the book. Jessie is given an assignment from her magazine, "Can you go home again?" and, as such, she starts thinking about her own home in rural Arizona. At the same time, Jessie's long time best friend, Erin, who runs a bed and breakfast in their hometown, is facing marital problems. Jessie and Erin then develop a plan that permits them the opportunity to do what so many sisters and best friends before them have dreamed of: they switch places. For six months, Erin comes to live in Jessie's New York apartment while she sorts through her marriage. In turn, Jessie works on her assignment in Arizona while returning to her roots and embarking on quite a few adventures. The book is just so well-written-- Eileen Goudge writes really detailed, descriptive passages that bring you right into the action of the story and make you feel like you've known her characters forever. I won't give away the rest of the story, but I would recommend that anyone who loves a good story with great characters pick up a copy of Otherwise Engaged.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Missing something? By Little D I agree with what this reviewer, DlynB, said "While this book was entertaining it lacked depth. There was so much going on, the main characters swapping lives, possible divorce and family problems with Erin, Jesse's past coming back to haunt her, the Navajo culture and then the water company destroying Willow Creek. With so many problems the author was left with little time to go into real depth concerning any of them. Throughout the entire book I was left wanting to know more."I wish the author DID write more about the two women exchanging lives rather than going into details about other things that don't really go in this story. There should have been more depth, like the person I quoted said. This book would have been a lot more enjoyable if it had more about Jessie and Erin in the everyday daily activities. I would have liked to have been there when Jessie almost birned down the Inn. Things like that should have been included rather than being mentioned.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Started out good, but... By K. Weirich I was really into this book for the first 100 pages or so, but then it started to get extremely confusing jumping back and forth between the two characters. I also found the story line very redundant. How many times were Erin and Skip going to almost fix their differences and then fall apart? I, too, found myself skipping through some of the descriptions further into the story; the wedding Jess went to with Hunter. I only gave it three stars because the premise of the story was a good one and it did start out alright, but then it just fell apart.

So interesting to hear Hayes talk about Coach after he left the public spotlight! Great read with stories that will make you laugh, touch your heart, and feel inspired by Coach's wisdom. Adding this to my Wooden collection!

This is a book that brings to mind over and over again the truth that it's wise to savor the small things, because one day we all look back and realize that they were indeed the big things! The author relates wonderful and funny anecdotes that focus on building relationships, overcoming obstacles of all types, remembering the fundamentals. Coach Hayes has captured the essence of Coach Wooden so well - genuine, humble, loyal, loving, powerfully influential.

Wooden Life Lessons By J & S Excellent read, as a former camper, it took me back to 9th grade and provided wonderful memories of the time I spent at Cal Lutheran training with Coach Wooden. The book takes you through a "week" of camp and paints a wonderful picture of what the Coaches, Counselors, and Campers experienced and the wonderful lessons learned from Coach Wooden.

Waking up knee-deep in the San Francisco Bay with no understanding of how she got there, thirty-nine-year-old Lucie Walker discovers she has no memories of her past or her loving fiancé, Grady. After being diagnosed with a rare form of amnesia, Lucie returns to her previous life with Grady in Seattle only to find evidence of the “old” Lucie―an insecure and shallow personality she no longer recognizes, or wants to. Like a detective, the new Lucie attempts to find the path from past to present, only to remember shocking pieces of a dark childhood that tempt her to run away from everything all over again. To complicate matters more, she finds herself falling in love with her fiancé and his big close-knit clan of a family just as he seems to be falling out of love with her. But as Lucie begins to open up to the world around her, she realizes that she can build a future as the woman she wants to be, rather than the one her past dictated.

Love Water Memory, by Jennie Shortridge

From Booklist In the opening scene of Shortridge’s fifth novel, a Seattle woman is found standing knee-deep in the San Francisco Bay, dressed in a designer suit, her memory wiped clean. She soon learns that she is Lucie Walker—smart, organized, a bit of an ice queen, and engaged to marry Grady Goodall on her fortieth birthday. The new Lucie must rediscover the old one—not an easy task when she’s kept any details of her childhood from Grady, including how her parents died and why she no longer speaks to her aunt Helen. Shortridge skillfully crafts evocative settings, from the gardens of Seattle’s neighborhoods to the clean lines of Lucie’s furniture, and the complexities of a relationship mending itself amid so much mystery. Chapters alternate between Lucie, Grady, and Aunt Helen, who is the least frequent but strongest of the narrators, odd and off-putting but with a wonderful hint of humanity under her bitter, aging shell. The piecing together of the lives and secrets of Shortridge’s characters makes for a thoroughly satisfying read. --Annie Tully

Review "Intriguing, resonant, and deeply satisfying, "Love Water Memory" takes us into the mystery of one woman's past and her attempts to reclaim both herself and the love she left behind." --Erica Bauermeister, author of "The School of Essential Ingredients"

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Another great read from Jennie Shortridge By Emmaclaire I had the pleasure of attending a book launch party for Love Water Memory at Elliott Bay Book Company in Seattle. When Jennie read the opening scene about poor Lucie, up to her knees in San Francisco Bay, I was totally hooked. We bought 3 copies of the book - 2 for gifts for other Jennie fans - and, although I was in the middle of another novel, I didn't even hesitate to set it aside until I could find out what happened with Lucie and Grady. The main characters are very believable and the the supporting characters are interesting as well. The story moves along very smoothly with a pace that took me from beginning to end in 2 days. It's great to see Jennie's talents evolve with this latest addition to her collection. I'll always be partial to "Love and Biology at the Center of the Universe" and "Riding With the Queen", but I think this one is her best so far. Thanks for the great read, Jennie!

Wonderfully written, but I wanted more By Sophia In "Water, Love, Memory," author Jennie Shortridge (of When She Flew fame, among others), opens the story with an intriguing premise. Lucie Walker, an almost-40 something finds herself knee-deep in cold water in the San Francisco Bay with no memory of who she is or how she got there. Admitted to the local psych ward, she is diagnosed with a traumatic memory loss - she can perform everyday tasks, like drive, dress herself and use a computer - but has no idea who she is.When a handsome man arrives at the hospital claiming to be her fiancé, Grady, she goes with him to their home in Seattle, hoping that it will trigger her recollection, but it doesn't. Lucie discovers that she really doesn't like her former persona very much, is at a loss to understand her, and grapples with some darker, underlying issues. Grady, also, struggles with a traumatic event that occurred earlier in his life, as well as with the strain of living with a stranger who is essentially inhabiting his fiancee's body. This is an excellently written book with superb flow. It really sucked me in from the start, and it was hard to put down. I found both Lucie and Grady to be sympathetic and believable, flaws and all, although Lucie's character was stronger than his. I was very much rooting for them to achieve a happy ending. Also, the climax packs a massive punch, especially in a book this short. Wow.If I have any slight criticisms, one would be that I wanted more. The book focused almost entirely on Lucie and Grady and all other characters are just foils to them. Also, the resolutions and coincidences seemed a little too pat. Lucie's career, for instance, was allowed to just dwindle away, as she is a sole proprietor. It also seemed unrealistic that she would have virtually NO friends - not even a gym buddy, or something to get manicures with? It seemed as though anything that might interfere with the story of the two protagonists was just conveniently eliminated. It is an excellent, well-written book, though, and one I enjoyed very much, these small issues notwithstanding. Strongly recommended.

Elsner Lucie Walker, the protagonist of this intriguing novel, finds herself knee deep in the cold water of San Francisco Bay with no memory of who she is or how she got there. Taken to a psych ward, she is eventually recognized and claimed by a handsome man claiming to be her fiance.Lucie remembers how to use a computer and a cellphone; she can drive and shop and can function in the world. She knows history and politics -- but she has no memory of Grady, the man she lives with, or of the rest of her history. She doesn't know who she is, or rather who she was. And the new Lucie that begins to emerge is not the same as the one who disappeared along with her memory. She behaves very differently from the driven, ultra-controlling person she used to be. She's friendlier, more relaxed, less fixated on shopping and clothes and personal fitness. In many ways, she's a huge improvement. The more we learn about the former Lucie, the less likable she seems. As the book progresses, Lucie learns more about her former self and starts to come closer to the big traumatic and long-repressed secret in her childhood that caused her psychological break. Grady tries to protect her from some unpleasant facts but this is a book about how corrosive secrets can be in a person's life. The truth shall set us free. Will it set Lucie and Grady free or will it destroy them? The biggest problem with this generally satisfying novel was the silly title. Grady was a little less convincing as a character than Lucie. The minor characters, including Lucie's aunt Helen, were lightly sketched for the most part. But the premise is intriguing enough and the execution skillful enough to make this a book worth reading.

Excerpt from The Wire CuttersMrs. Hilliard met the messenger at her front gate. She had seen him from an upper window, coming along the plantation road, his open buggy almost overtopped by the tall cane on either side. She felt sure that the coatless person in blue linen trousers and panama hat, who approached in a leisurely fashion warranted by the heat of the September afternoon, was the bearer of the long-expected decision. She turned, trembling, from the window, seized by an almost irresistible impulse to rush into an inner room, close and lock the door, and so at least postpone the inevitable revelation. The next moment she had caught up a garden hat and was descending the broad stairway, pale but composed, at least in outward appearance. She waved back the negro lad who had started on a run to open the gate, and passed swiftly along the shaded carriage-drive.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Wire Cutters (Classic Reprint), by M. E. M. Davis

From the Back Cover The first novel to portray seriously nineteenth-century cowboy life, The Wire-Cutters was Mollie E. Moore Davis's tour de force inspired by Texas' Fence Cutting Wars fought by competing cattlemen and ranchers. First published in 1899, the novel introduced readers to a new kind of storytelling that prefigured an entire American literary genre - the Western - and predated Owen Wister's The Virginian (1902) and Andy Adams's Log of a cowboy (1903), two novels widely regarded as the first Westerns by many unfamiliar with Davis's groundbreaking work. Centered around the destructive fence-cutting war waged against ranchers by cattlemen whose herds were cut off from water, The Wire-Cutters recreates the colorful vernacular and often quirky personalities of the cowboys, the rich folk culture of the region, and the particulars of daily life on the Western frontier. Now, with an introduction by Lou Halsell Rodenberger which delineates the historical and literary significance of this important but forgotten novel, The Wire-Cutters is available for the first time since its initial publication to literary and cultural scholars and historians, as well as to aficionados of Westerns and Texana.

About the Author Moved from Alabama to San Marcos, Texas, as a child, Mollie E. Moore Davis (1847?–1909) began her career as a newspaperwomen in Tyler, Houston, and Galveston and was initially recognized for her poetry. After marrying, she moved to New Orleans and began her work as a novelist, returning in the summers to Comanche, Texas, where she gathered the material for The Wire-Cutters.

3 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Movie appearance By D. Moore I first became curious about this book when I saw its front cover jump out at me in the movie "The Big Sleep" - starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. In the scene where Bogey is in the bookstore with Dorothy Malone, passing the time of day while waiting out the rain, the only book title that can be read clearly is that of "The Wire Cutters". I haven't tracked the booko down yet so I can actually read it, but just seeing it in the movie made me want to find out more about it.There very well may be a niche wherein people collect books that have made appearances in movies; this certainly is one of those.

A butcher knife whistled and crackled through gristle and bone as grandma cut through rabbits and squirrels. Browned, crisped, and mixed with a gravy made from milk, flour, and meat drippings, this was served as the daily feast.

That was 1939 in Depression-era Alton, Illinois, when Ernest R. House was born. So begins Cherry Street Alley, his memoir of a childhood filled with adventures, mishaps, and family sagas.

House endures poverty and a rotating cast of guardians. Born into an extended family, he and his sister are sent to live with relatives after his father dies suddenly and his mother remarries. He recounts stories of coming-of-age in a rough neighborhood of Alton, a former riverboat town along the Mississippi River. Many remembrances are dotted with humor—such as growing up next to a whorehouse and having people mistake your home for it.

There’s violence in House’s outlines of his relatives, including his father’s loving—but criminal—personality. There’s also compassion in a memoir about a family’s struggles to survive.

Told in the style of popular childhood memoirs Angela's Ashes and This Boy's Life, Cherry Street Alley is a book you won’t soon forget.

Thier Reading this book is just like the cover--you sit with a box full of old photos that remind Mr House of snapshots of him past and he reminisces about the ones he selects. Some descriptions are short and unemotional while others are longer and filled with very personal feelings. The author pulls us back to a time and place familiar to the author and, through his telling, closer to us, the readers.

But his freedom comes with a price: each night Jaykun must still suffer-his body burning from the inside out. One early morning, recovering from his torment, he encounters a beautiful stranger on the beach. Naked from her midnight-black hair to her sandy toes, she approaches him with starry-eyed innocence and the unmistakably full body of a woman. Soon Jaykun is swept up with the force of a comet, his desire for this woman hotter than any sun. His brothers fear he is blinded by her radiant beauty, and that she has been sent by their enemies to seduce and destroy him. Jileana is indeed from another world-one Jaykun cannot begin to imagine. But will their passion burn brightly enough to light the way through the darkness that threatens to consume all in its path?

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. chapterONEJaykun felt the sword puncture the hard leather of his armored vest, the power of its wielder outstanding. The sword went through his vest and entered his heart, cleaving it nearly in two. The shock of it drove him to his knees. His enemy leaned in with snarling laughter and spit in Jaykun’s face.Jaykun lost his temper. He surged back up to his feet, startling the man looming over him. He reached for the abandoned hilt of the sword driven into his chest, and with a mighty heave, he yanked it out of his body. He knew he had only minutes before the trauma caught up to him, so he used those minutes wisely.Finding himself armed with a sword in each hand, he hurled himself at his enemy, who was now weaponless. With an ear-splitting battle cry, he plunged both swords under his enemy’s armor—one through the man’s neck, the other under his arm and, reciprocating the honor, through his heart. When this man fell, he did not get up again.Jaykun’s enemy was facedown in the mud and blood only seconds later, having drawn his last breath in this world.Jaykun threw down the inferior sword the man had used in an attempt to slay him and turned to look back toward the encampment. He began to walk toward it, the seconds ticking by with every pump of his damaged heart. He staggered, but he forced himself to remain on his feet. If he went down into the mud, he would be left there for hours, until the battle was over and one or both of his brothers came to retrieve his body.Instead he walked off the battlefield, managing somehow to avoid engaging another enemy combatant. He stumbled up the embankment—the high ground from where they had launched their offensive—and lurched toward the command tent. He reached it by sheer force of will, but only just. He stumbled inside, startling his elder brother Dethan, who had been poring over a map of the field and its outlying areas—as well as the prize that lay beyond the battle: the city of Kriza.“Jaykun!” Dethan cried out, dropping what was in his hands and hurrying to catch Jaykun before his face hit the ground full force. Dethan eased him down to the ground. “Tonkin! Where is my brother Garreth?” he demanded of his page.“I will fetch him from the battlefield!”“Have a care. I don’t want you injured as well!” Dethan said. He rolled Jaykun onto his back and watched as he gasped for breath and grew pale and cold. But he would not die. Only a god-made weapon that took off his head, or the gods themselves, could kill him. It had been an ordinary weapon that had pierced Jaykun’s chest; that much was obvious. But it had hurt just the same and would continue to do so until Jaykun began to heal.“It was four on one. I had them all . . . then a fifth came out of nowhere and plunged the bloody thing in!” Jaykun panted.“I will get the mem presently,” Dethan said, looking around for a priestess within sight of the tent, who could use her healing gift and hasten Jaykun’s healing processes. It would help alleviate the pain more quickly. But oddly enough, Jaykun wasn’t feeling any pain. Just cold. A bone-deep chill that had him shaking.“You would be better served to have Tonkin fetch a mem rather than Garreth,” Jaykun wheezed.“I was not thinking,” Dethan confessed. “I will find one at once.”“No.” Jaykun reached up and grabbed his brother by the armored brace on his forearm. The armor was god made, just as Dethan’s sword was—the sword that presently was clutched in Jaykun’s hand. He wanted to make himself release it. To force himself to relax. But he couldn’t seem to accomplish it. He was going numb slowly, which he supposed was better than dealing with pain. “I will be fine.”“Eventually,” Dethan bit out. “But that will take time and I will not have you suffer in the interim. Next time you are wearing my armor as well as taking my sword!”“No. I will not have you unprotected. Besides, you know I do not like to wear full armor. It slows me down.”“By the gods, you are a stubborn man,” Dethan hissed at him. “Will you not let anyone help you?”Jaykun didn’t reply to that. He loved his brothers, but he would not depend on them for anything. It was not that he didn’t trust them, but he would not burden them with the trials of his life. They were his to bear and no one else’s.“You! Mem! Come and help my brother!” Dethan called out suddenly to a mem passing by the opening of the tent. She was very young and fair-haired, and since she was a priestess of Weysa, the goddess of conflict and war, she wore armor. It was hardened leather like Jaykun’s was, meant to help protect but light enough to move in. Of course leather armor had its flaws, as was exhibited by Jaykun’s present condition, but overall it did its job.The young mem knelt beside Jaykun, her eyes widening when she saw the evidence of where the sword had entered. “Take off his armor,” she instructed Dethan as she drew a satchel from around her neck. She set it on the ground and rummaged inside it as Dethan quickly worked the straps of Jaykun’s armor. He pulled the vest away, making Jaykun grit his teeth from a fresh wash of pain, which reminded Jaykun he was indeed injured. Fresh blood pumped freely from the wound Dethan had exposed. The mem’s eyes widened again. It was not common knowledge that Jaykun was an immortal warrior. There were whispers and speculation, some soldiers having taken note of how quickly he healed from injury. Too quickly, even with the help of a mem. But no one knew for certain because the brothers had not wanted to spook their soldiers with talk of them being cursed. Now it was possible they would have little choice but to address the matter. Or they could swear the mem to silence. Most of the men and mems were more than a little intimidated by the strong and relentlessly war-hungry brothers. Still, the mem was a full witness to Jaykun being alive while wounded in a way that would have killed any other man. Depending on the nature of the mem’s personality, she was likely to tell someone eventually. People talked. They simply could not help themselves. It was just in their nature. The mem put together a poultice and spread it over his open wound. Then she laid hands on him, closed her eyes, and began to recite her healing prayers.About ten minutes into this healing process their youngest brother, Garreth, arrived at the tent. “What happened?” he asked breathlessly.Garreth was covered in blood, the red of it staining his god-made armor. There was an enameled picture of the wey flower, the flower of the goddess Weysa, in the center of his breastplate and it was smeared with the congealed fluid.Garreth was the shortest of the brothers, but he was still quite tall and not more than a hand shy of Dethan, who was by far the tallest of the three. He also had a leaner, more athletic build in comparison to his bigger brothers. All the brothers were green eyed, although each pair was shaded a bit differently. Each brother also had curly hair, but Dethan’s was a chestnut-brown, Garreth’s was as black as night, and Jaykun’s was a deep golden blond. Dethan was wearing his hair long these days, twisted into two thin braids at his temples with a single long braid down his back. Each braid was tipped with a flame-red feather, a gift from his fire mage wife, so that he might have something to remind him of her. Garreth’s hair was shorter and unadorned, curling just around his ears and the nape of his neck. Jaykun’s blond locks were of a similar length.Garreth knelt beside his brother and seemed to check his color.Jaykun swatted him away. “Stop fussing over me as though I were an old woman who has fallen over her own feet. I will be fine given time. Tell me, is the battle won?”“We fare very well,” Garreth told him.“Get back out there and see it through to the end. I want this city.”Garreth hesitated, not wanting to leave his brother. Oh, he knew Jaykun could not die any more than he could, but he also knew just how painful these injuries could be, immortal or no.“Do it!” Jaykun barked.Garreth rose to his feet. “Let’s get him into a bed. Give him a cup of wine. Maybe it will improve his disposition.”He helped Dethan lift their brother from the ground and they carried him over to one of the cots in the command tent. There were three beds in the tent, one for each brother—though they saw very little use when the army was in the thick of a battle. The men laid Jaykun out on the bed, and the mem returned to his side and began to pray again. Garreth fetched Jaykun a cup of wine, handed it to him, then moved to the open flap of the tent before Jaykun could lecture him to return to the battle once more. After their youngest sibling had gone, Jaykun looked to his elder brother. “What is our progress?”“That is not of your concern. You will focus on healing. Dusk comes soon and I—”“Do not talk of it!” Jaykun snapped sharply. He wanted to push the mem and his brother away, but he was too weak. He hated this. Hated being weak and incapacitated and at the mercy of whoever wanted to force conversation on him. But his brother should know better than to speak of dusk when others not in their circle were present.“I was not going to say anything. What do you take me for?” Dethan snapped back. “Drink your wine. Garreth is right; you need to improve your disposition.”Dethan pushed away from his brother and went back to the maps. On the maps were small figures of wood meant to represent troop locations, so he could follow where they had progressed and where they had fallen back. Kriza was a coastal city with a strong armada in its docks. An armada they wanted control of very badly. Fortunately for the brothers, an armada did a city no good on the land, and thus Kriza, for all its tremendous size and population, did not have a well-organized standing army. The men of Kriza were used to working ships in defense of their city. They were used to raids and battles that took place amongst the riggings of a vessel. But fighting in the rocky terrain that surrounded their home was another story.Jaykun’s army was a vast one. It was a compilation of warriors from many different cities—cities that the brothers had defeated and claimed as their own over the full turnings. Normally Dethan would not be in battle with them. Instead he would be making the rounds of the cities they had previously secured, making certain that the trusted men they had left behind to rule them were still securely in place and were supported if any type of discontent grew.

I just didn't enjoy it By Shauni Originally Reviewed For: Tea and BookBound by Sin is book three in the Immortal Brothers Series, I absolutely LOVED book 1, I had character issues with book 2 and book 3? Well,Jacquelyn Frank is an exceptional author, but let's face it she has been known to get lost in the stories sometimes. And Bound by Sin was a series of what ifs and maybes. I read a review earlier comparing this to The Little Mermaid, in the worst possible way, and sadly, I saw the reviewer's point.Jaykun is the third brother to have his story told, obviously since this is book three, sheesh, Anyway, Four brothers who believed they deserved to be Immortal, were found and punished by the gods. Jaykum was bound to a star for eternity or until the gods deemed otherwise. When his brothers were offered a chance to redeem themselves if they conquered and converted people to the "good" gods, they needed yet another brother. So Jaykum gets his chance. Of course there's a catch. He still has to accept his punishment. So every night he is forced to burn... but during the day he battles his enemies.Jileana wanted to learn more about the world, well the world above the water so she made a deal that basically gave her three weeks to check it out. During those three weeks she is supposed to observe NOT participate but she watches Jaykun burn and is intrigued. Naked and alone she approaches him and they form a friendship, then a relationship. But Jileana has her duties as well and return home she must.I just didn't connect with them as individuals, let alone as a couple. At times I was just plain bored and others, well I really enjoyed it. It's hard not to wonder at the creativity of an author when she creates an entire world underwater, with it's hierarchies and battles. There were things going on under the sea that I wanted to learn more about. I cared more about them than Jaykun and Jileana. We didn't interact a lot with the brothers but Garret, whom I adored in Cursed by Fire has just gotten worse. He spent most of his time whining about wanting to go home to his wife and family. Pointing out that he's the only brother who is no longer immortal so he should be able to spend more time with his family... gah.. someone shoot him, seriously..So, In my most honest opinion, this one was a bust.ShauniThis review is based on the ARC of Bound by Sin, provided by netgalley

It is part of the Immortal Brothers series but can be read as a standalone. You won’t be lost as you read because she does an excellent job of providing information to the reader. I enjoyed Jaykun and Jileana’s relationship. Jaykun has to burn every night as a punishment because of a wrong doing against the gods. During the day he has to campaign to spread the word of his goddess Weysa, while on a campaign against the city Kriza, he meets Jileana. He is at the cove where he decided to ‘burn’ for the night when he realizes that he is being watched. When he can see again, he finds himself being watched by Jileana. She is openly curious about the beauty of the man who burns like a star, that is until she realizes the pain he is in every time he must burn. As Jaykun and Jileana become closer, he finds out that she is not what she appears, but rather is a selkie. She lives on an island that is protected by storms so no one that is not invited can get on it. She invites Jaykun to the island and he accepts it in a diplomatic form, this way he can talk about the goddess Weysa while he is there. He becomes friends with the empress and helps her settle the problems that have been plaguing the selkies. While this book was good and the storyline was quite enjoyable, I found some areas to be rushed, while others seemed to drag. The interaction though between Jaykun and Jileana was very believable. The way the story was written made it seem like they had a lot of time to get to know each other, which is something I appreciated. While I enjoy the ‘insta’ love trope, sometimes it’s good to read about a pair that takes some time to really get to know each other.

Interesting series from a popular paranormal romance author By Ruckasaurus Rex "How funny humans are, that love is a sin." - Bound by Sin**advance reader copy received through NetGalley**Bound by Sin is the third book in Frank’s Immortal Brothers series, a series based on four brothers who stole immortality from the gods and are forced to take on immortal punishment as penance. This book focuses on the story of Jaykun, whose punishment was being chained to a star and burning eternally. Released to wage war and accrue followers for a goddess, Jaykun must continue to pay for his transgression each night. Suddenly a beautiful woman appears to lure Jaykun from his brothers and duties, but is she a threat or the promise of salvation? Jileana is definitely something special, and despite her blinding innocence she manages to prove herself several times over. In his worry over sucking her into his world of death and pain, Jaykun is sucked into Jileana’s strange life instead. Will Jaykun anger the goddess he serves and be condemned once more? Will Jileana manage to free herself from a life of abuse and torment? Once the dust clears, will the lovers find themselves serving opposing gods, or worse…will they pay with their lives?"Rewards?" He scoffed. He couldn't help himself. "Love brings no rewards. It is an illusory thing poets and bards made up to lure coin from a listener's pocket." - Bound by SinI think that fans of Jacquelyn Frank will enjoy the series, and as I jumped into the series with book three I can say it stands alone just fine. I really enjoy the writing style of this author, especially her Nightwalkers series. With integration of a pantheon of gods and goddesses, you might see similarities to other paranormal series available, but the author ensures her worldbuilding is quite unique. While I enjoyed the character of the male lead, I found his tendency to anger quickly with his brothers and yet allow certain insults in other areas a little off. I can tolerate some level of innocence in a female lead, but I found Jileana to be a little bit too innocent and a soft target for aggression. The story focuses on the couple initially, and then seems to disperse once the scene changes, focusing on a single character or interactions with characters other than the love interest. I will certainly be looking into the final book in this series to see how things wrap up with the last brother.

You the reader are able to follow the rekindling of love the started in the first novel. When Jack finally convinces Maeve that she's is his only love he'll ever have has you jumping with joy! I can't wait for Bess's story to be out, I'll be first in line to buy it.

Jack is to-die-for sexy and the scenes when Maeve and he finally get together absolutely took by breath away. It's got the wonderful friendships I liked in the first book, but a lot more focus on the romance part this time, which I really enjoyed. There were so many LOL moments, but I cried like a baby at other points. I've become addicted to these characters. I feel like they are old friends now. So glad Maeve got her story told. Please bring on the next one!

You feel like you are one of the group of friends, the humor and friendship are endearing. Jack and Maeve have to work through their issues, and their developing relationship is fun to read. Mick and Lacey and Bess are all characters you would want to spend time with. Enjoy this book, I'm off to read another by Kate Aster.

Together Forever is the heartwarming story of a couple—Arie and Rivka Ringelstein—born in Moldova before the Second World War, who braved great hardships to narrowly escape the country as the Nazis sent their friends, family, and neighbors to the Death Camps. Although they were born no more than 64 miles apart, they did not meet until one fateful day years later in Israel when Arie—dashing in his IDF officer’s uniform—rode up on his motorcycle to carry Rivka’s heart away, and to become partners for life. Together Forever proves that love has the power to pull two people together over great distances and time, and bind them tightly together—even beyond death.

Although they were both born in Moldova, less than 100 miles apart from each other -- events leading up to World War II and the Holocaust conspired to keep them apart. Each followed their separate path through Europe, and eventually to freedom. And each eventually found their way to the newly founded nation of Israel, where they became pioneers -- and eventually man and wife. Together Forever tells Arie and Rivka's stories in a riveting and inspiring way, and it also tells the historical backdrop that they and their families were so much a part of. I guarantee you will learn something interesting and new. Their story is heroic, and a must-read for anyone interested in the power of love to overcome even the most difficult of challenges. Highly recommended.

There follows the meeting of the couple and their life together for 50 years - a tale of love, hard work and devotion to each ot By mideast mother I found this book to be a fascinating and touching story about a couple's journey through life. It covers so many aspects of living. It begins with the lives of two normal Jewish families in Europe as antisemitism grew into the Holocaust. It brings home the horrors that happened to ordinary Jews of that time - not only the pervasive prejudice but barbaric acts of violence. It chronicles the courage of these people as they struggled against adversity day after day to get ahead and provide for their families in the build up to Nazism. The number of times they nearly died is extraordinary - they obviously had a purpose yet to fulfil. The challenges of living in the middle of the rages of war are clearly depicted - the impressions that this made on the young - the atrocities they witnessed. This book highlights the courage that both Arie and Rivka demonstrated on their long and separate journeys to Israel, unbeknown to each other, is profound. Arie travelled as an orphaned youth and Rivka with her parents escaping from Romania through a variety of camps and settlements - the journey taking them each a couple of years. We learn of Aries life in an early kibbutz and his career in the new Israeli army and of Rivka's education and the beginning of her career. There follows the meeting of the couple and their life together for 50 years - a tale of love, hard work and devotion to each other and to their families - it is a delight to read.

They are charming, kind, and loving individuals, and yet to read their story opens your eyes even further to the power, dignity, and grace of the human spirit. Meeting them, one would never have guessed the horrors they witnessed, the unthinkable trials they underwent being raised during the holocaust, hiding, losing loved ones, and leaving their homes and families, just to stay alive. The cheerful, beautiful souls I met would did not carry their painful memories as baggage but rather carried an inner light that exemplifies all that is good, beautiful, and true in our human hearts. To read this story is to read a piece of history from the perspective of those who lived it and found love to be a greater power than all the hatred and suffering they once witnessed. This book is a triumph of the human spirit and a testament to the beautiful truth that love is a force so powerful it transcends suffering, persecution, distance, and even the veils between this world and the next. Beautiful, inspiring work.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. How Life Can Continue . . . . By A. Z. Lewis This is a rather personal review, in that I am a small part of this story, and it details an extremely sad and stressful period of my life, albeit with a message that is uplifting and perhaps comforting. It can be viewed as an allegory since there is nothing as awesome and terrifyingly beautiful as the flames of a forest fire, the full fury of Nature sweeping its destructive scythe across the most beautiful landscape, and yet somehow, after the fury and horror of its effects, it is Man as a part of Nature who can emerge to continue working, and growing, building and loving, recovering from disaster, and affirming the possibilities and the beauties of Life. Melissa captures that duality in her narration, the devastation of loss, and the promise of rebirth that for me included the death of my mother, and the comfort of her memory in work that one must do to continue, to move positively in the pursuit of what is meaningful. The book is beautifully printed, with pictures, paper, typeface that mirrors the beauty of the story --- her life of Zen contemplation and work being suddenly interrupted by the power of a massive forest fire, threatening all of the mountain with complete destruction. She starts with her identity as a mother of two vibrant young girls and her relationship with leader of the Zen Center. And as quickly as one gets to feel her aspirations, you are interrupted by the reality of the Mountain Fire, a massive forest fire started by a malfunctioning well pump, and growing to one of the biggest in the history of the San Jacinto mountains where the Zen Center had been established over many years of careful and beautiful work. As she and all were evacuated, one senses the possibility of utter and complete loss, yet even as the fire rages, Melissa and her extended family move with a calm determination to do what can be done, to comfort each other, and prepare for what must be. And so, as all watch the possible destruction of the mountain, wait for the results of the battle by Man to direct or mitigate that destructive force . . . much as I watched my mother (Melissa's close friend) in the last days of her life of beauty, and then, after we were able to return to the mountain, note the efforts to recover and rebuild. The pictures that are in the book show the destruction and the beauty. The story establishes the truth that love and beauty can be recovered even in the face of utter loss. And the Zen Center is being rebuilt with the sureness that Life prevails, even after a massive forest fire. And the loss of a dear friend. The story is a love story, and how one must love the Life that can inspire us, in the rocks and trees, in the mud slides, and the heat of a fire, in the efforts and success that hard work can deliver, in the beauty of a painting or a beautiful structure, and even in the death that must claim us all. Thank you Melissa, for this book of Beauty and Love.
