In 1962, with a Canadian friend, Andy Larson embarked on a journey driving across colonial Africa in a wartime jeep. Sleeping on the ground, the pair encountered civil wars, riots, and wild animals while seeing the continents fascinating scenery and meeting its interesting peoples. In June 2010 Andy Larson embarked on another journey, this time sailing a 36 foot sailboat alone from Vancouver to Mexico, and then across the Pacific Ocean to Sydney Australia. Alone at sea, he encountered whales and dolphins, endured solitude and loneliness, fought through storms, battled breakdowns, and sat for days becalmed in the heat of the doldrums. This is the story of how, in his late 70's, against the wishes of his friends and family, he embarked on a journey that would test his skills and his endurance, and convince him to set out on an even more dangerous and far reaching journey.

From the award-winning author of The Palace of the Snow Queen comes a novel about love and independence in 19th century Denmark. Inspired by the relationship between the composer Carl Nielsen and the artist and ethnographer Emilie Demant Hatt, Fossil Island tells the story of two sisters: Nik is a fourteen-year-old tomboy who spends her time fossilizing on the nearby island of Fur. Her older sister Maj is studying to be a teacher, along with her best friend, the fiery Eva Sandström. During the summer of 1887, their Aunt Marie introduces into the family a handsome young musician of twenty-two. Flirtation turns to a secret romance between Nik and Carl, as Maj weighs an engagement over her intense friendship with Eva. The following year in Copenhagen brings the sisters' lives to the crisis point as they juggle passion, jealousy, and violent events. Fossil Island is the first of two novels about Nik and Maj: its sequel, The Former World, continues their story.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful Story By A reader in Olympia This is a wonderful book. The writing is superb, the characters memorable, and the story fun but also important in terms of the themes addressed. I read Fossil Island with keen interest and attachment to the characters, especially Nik, the 14-year-old girl whose experiences growing up in 19th century Selde, Denmark, take us along the exhilarating, and also challenging, path of adolescence. From the very beginning, when Nik meets the young Carl Nielsen (later to become Denmark's most famous composer), I felt captivated by the story, which includes such distinct adventures for Nik as fossil collecting with her friends, as well as learning about classical music from the young, musical genius. Nik has just finished her basic schooling and she is wondering a bit about what to do with her life, but she is also simply experiencing her life, a lovely thing for an older reader (me) to live through once again. I think the author does such a beautiful job at describing people and creating dialogue, much of it based on true conversations for most of the characters were real people, that I felt happy to reread many passages over again.Yet, one aspect I liked even more about Fossil Island was the very important issues it addresses, all within the umbrella of great storytelling. There is the topic of women's rights in 19th century Europe and obtaining the vote and changing attitudes about what opportunities should be made available to women. There's also the emergence of the Rational Dress Society and what this means for both women and men as women begin to determine how they will see themselves, and be seen, in the world. Very importantly too is the idea of what it means to be an artist, an idea that is very much in the mind of the 22-year-old Carl Nielsen, but also in Nik's, as she begins to draw and paint and learn to really see the world she lives in. As the relationship between Nik and Carl deepens, she struggles with his affection (while also loving it--ah, that wonderful push-pull of first loves!) and a potential marriage to him that may not allow her the freedom she holds so dear.I was very sorry to come to the end of this book, but also relieved to know there is a sequel, The Former World, which I am reading, and loving, right now.

By featherlashes Midnight Bites is an audiobook which contains two novellas from Chloe Neill's urban fantasy series titled: Chicagoland Vampires. I have listed the novellas below and provided an individual review for each. If you follow this series and haven't already read these short-stories then check them out!#8.5 Howling For You★★★★★Howling For You is a novella (#8.5) in author Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampires series. This less-than-100-page story was a wonderful addition to the series. It focuses on the shifter community, specifically the North American Central Pack and the Keene family. Jeff Christopher plays a significant role in this story as well, and many readers will love how he is included in this story. We see another side to him; he's not just a nerdy, IT genius. He's a fighter, a romantic, and a lover. “Sweet and geeky Jeff, lover of games, knew how to move.” I just loved him in this book! The lead character is Fallon Keene, the first female to be next in line for pack leadership. The mystery element was fairly simple and easily solved but this is not a complaint since it's such a short book. Neither Merit nor the Cadogan House are involved; the story really is all about the shifters. This novella was written in a way that any reader new to the series could read it as a standalone novel and enjoy it as such. I am a loyal reader of the Chicagoland Vampires series and I would be loyal to a spinoff featuring these characters as well. Hint Hint Chloe Neill...spinoff please!!!!!!!!!!!!#10.5 Lucky Break★★★★☆Lucky Break is a novella (#10.5) in author Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampires series. Merit and Ethan desperately need some time away from their duties and just when they begin a romantic vacation, wouldn't you know it...yep, work calls. This mystery heavily involves the shifter community which was a nice addition. This series never gets old, and even though I would have thoroughly enjoyed reading a fun Ethan and Merit love-fest, I certainly didn't mind this mystery-filled quickie.

In 2007, Dr. Martin MacNeill-a doctor, lawyer, and Mormon bishop-discovered his wife of thirty years dead in the bathtub of their Pleasant Grove, Utah, home, her face bearing the scars of a facelift he had persuaded her to undergo just a week prior. At first the death of fifty-year-old Michele MacNeill, a former beauty queen and mother of eight, appeared natural. But days after the funeral, when Dr. MacNeill moved his much younger mistress into the family home, his children grew suspicious. Conducting their own investigation into their mother's death, the MacNeill daughters uncovered their father's multiple marital affairs, past criminal record, and falsified college transcripts he used to con his way into medical school. It would take six long years to solve the mystery of Michele's murder and secure a first-degree murder conviction against the once prominent doctor. New York Times bestselling author Shanna Hogan delves into the high-profile case, unmasking the monster beneath the doctor's carefully concocted facade.

I liked another book this author wrote so decided just to go for it and I'm glad I did. It was very much worth it,I got interested in this trial near the end. This book filled in all of the holes and gave me the complete background on the case.I love Hogan's style of writing. No filler just the facts but put together in a way that's interesting and almost novelish.I was totally sucked in to this book...read it in two days.I recommend it highly.

By Bookreporter When 20-year-old Michele Somers met Martin MacNeill at a singles event at her Mormon church in Mission Viejo, California, in 1977, she was drawn in by his confident manner and stunning good looks. Little did she know that she'd just taken the first step on the path that would lead to her death some 30 years later. While her family members entertained significant misgivings about the former cheerleader and homecoming queen's relationship with and impending marriage to the man who was a physician and also held a law degree, they opted not to rain on Michele's parade by expressing their suspicions. After all, Michele appeared so in love that they doubted she'd heed their warnings.Michele grew up in a warm, loving family that provided her with a fairy tale childhood. Martin, however, was raised on the other side of the country in Camden, New Jersey, where crime, substance abuse and physical abuse were commonplace. While Michele's upbringing conditioned her to trust others, Martin's childhood experiences taught him that to get what he wanted, he must lie and behave in the most cunning ways possible. In other words, Michele was the perfect victim upon whom Martin could use his skills of manipulation to get what he wanted.Throughout the years, Martin and Michele had four biological children. Once they were grown and out of the house, the couple adopted four additional daughters to fill their home. Before the girls could reach adulthood, however, Michele would be dead.Always one to have extramarital affairs of which his wife was blissfully unaware, Martin finally met the woman who made him want to rid himself of Michele forever. The woman, a young nurse named Gypsy Willis, had one divorce behind her and a child born out of wedlock who was being raised by her strict Mormon parents. To her, Martin seemed like he finally might be the man to make her dreams come true.Tired of being married to Michele, Martin wasn't one who wanted to lose any part of his financial portfolio or possessions to an ex-wife. Subsequently, he simply would have to dispatch Michele to the great beyond before her time.Part of his plan involved plying her with a barrage of medications that she would take after extensive facial plastic surgery that he demanded she have. While he presented it as a gift from a loving husband to his wife, in reality, the surgery gave the doctor the perfect excuse to ply his wife with medication that would render her helpless in his hands. On the day of her death, Michele was found with her head and upper body submerged in a bathtub full of water. Martin's halfhearted resuscitation efforts, as described by neighbors who witnessed them, failed to revive his wife. When the medical examiner found nothing untoward, Michele's death was attributed to previously undiscovered heart problems.Although Martin seemed to be off the hook, his daughter, Alexis, couldn't shake the belief that he'd murdered her mother. When he moved Gypsy into his home as a nanny to care for the children who remained at home, Alexis decided to do whatever it took to reveal her father as the man who killed her mother.THE STRANGER SHE LOVED is a chilling tale that reminds us that in some circumstances, trusting our nearest and dearest may be the worst mistake we ever make. Even though Michele had begun to see through Martin's lies, she didn't take the proper steps to remove herself from his sphere of control and ended up paying the ultimate price. Fans of true crime stories will revel in the details that journalist Shanna Hogan provides to give them an accurate picture of a cold-blooded killer who showed no hesitation when he wanted to discard his loyal wife in favor of his mistress.Reviewed by Amie Taylor.

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. This book was certainly intelligently written, telling the tragic story of the MacNeil ... By Ladybug's Landlady This book was certainly intelligently written, telling the tragic story of the MacNeil family in a way that wasn't overly-dramatic or cheesy. It had solid research, decent background information, and moved along at a fair pace. It was interesting reading, although not riveting, but the story was competently told. I don't think we got a truly universal look at the victim, Michele MacNeil, but more of what her family and friends thought of her - which seemed shallow at times (for example, when discussing the adopted Ukrainian child Noelle - that was promptly given back - and Giselle, who was abused by Martin and seemingly hushed up by Michele when the child reported the sexual assault to her). That part was a bit confusing to me, as it portrayed Michele in a very poor light and in turn, it was never really clarified (as to her potential internal motivations or conflicts in treating her adopted daughters so badly). The reason I gave this book three stars was that, although effectively told, it wasn't riveting. It wasn't on any level as good as "Fatal Vision", which I feel is a true crime book that truly deserves a very high price. If this book had been $7.99, I would've given it four stars. But at $16, the value just wasn't there. It was a fairly short book, straight-forward, not overly-dramatized. It was just...a decently-told true crime book. And that's it. Interesting story and since there isn't anything else out there to choose from (no other books about this particular crime), perhaps it's worth paying a bit more for it. Just not quite THIS much.

A fun read By Mana G This is a fun read- I pick up books like this for when the trailers roll in the movie theater or me and the kids go on a road trip- it’s something to talk about while being educational as well. Granted, we burn through these books quite quickly but I thought I’d take a moment to write how much we enjoyed this one.Everything was well organized, which unfortunately isn’t always the case with Kindle books, and easy to navigate through. Instead of waiting until the end (and consequently flipping back and forth between the end and the beginning) the answers are given every set of ten questions, saving you from those annoying page turns. The trivia itself was quite fun too- we really enjoyed ourselves!

We made up a pretty good drinking quiz game out of this quiz book, and I realize how little I know about Real Madrid... which unfortunately meant I got a pretty bad hangover the next day... However it was still a great quiz book! And I recommend you use it for a soccer drinking quiz game!

Twelve extraordinary tales of crime and punishment: a collection of true crime writing by New Zealand's award-winning master of non-fiction.

A court is a chamber of questions. Who, when, why, what happened and exactly how - these are issues of psychology and the soul, they're general to the human condition, with its infinite capacity to cause pain.

A brutal murder of a wife and daughter ... A meth-fuelled Samurai sword attack ... A banker tangled in a hit-and-run scandal ... A top cop accused of rape ... A murder in the Outback ... A beloved entertainer's fall from grace ...

In the hands of award-winning journalist and author Steve Braunias these and other extraordinary cases become more than just courtroom dramas and sensational headlines. They become a window onto another world - the one where things go badly wrong, where once invisible lives become horrifyingly visible, where the strangeness just beneath the surface is revealed.

Acutely observed, brilliantly written, and with the Mark Lundy case as its riveting centrepiece, this collection from the courts and criminal files of the recent past depicts a place we rarely enter, but which exists all around us.

The Mark Lundy case is front and center By Christopher Halkides The Scene of the Crime gives vivid accounts of a number of murders interspersed with brief, though evocative, glimpses of New Zealand. The author spends much time on the Mark Lundy case, in which Mr. Lundy has now been convicted twice of killing his wife and daughter. The forensic science in this case is complex and contentious, yet the jury seemed to focus on Mr. Lundy's final interview with the police prior to his arrest and Mr. Lundy's reaction to it in court. Perhaps the jury was looking for clues in Mr. Lundy's body language (they would have been better advised to mark the indirect and inadvertent admission of tunnel vision that the police made during its course). Yet Mr. Braunias's retelling of this crucial detail reinforces the notion that juries are fickle and unpredictable.

By K Hayton This was a selection of crime stories from Steve's career in journalism, which demonstrated his fascination with the court system. Some of these cases were familiar to me while others were completely unheard of. Steve focuses in on the different participants in the drama of a trial and has revealing and emotional interviews with the main players.I found the repeat examinations of the Lundy murders the most compelling with an insight into the issues that many New Zealanders have struggled with in regards to this case over the years. Reading this at the same time as watching the Netflix 'Making a Murderer' was a particularly eye-opening experience as so many of the errors and ambiguities highlighted in Steve Avery's case were present at the Lundy trial. The thought that a man has been and will remain imprisoned for years because he appears distasteful is a harrowing thought designed to keep readers awake at night considering their own culpability in what may in time be revealed as another judicial error. The most emotionally touching of the cases for me involved a long-ago mass murder including the deaths of two policeman. Steve's interviews with the widow of one of the officers, both conducted long after his death, revealed a portrait of a strong woman in mourning who has retained her faith in life by visiting prison inmates and acting as a much needed friend and listener. Through her experience of these prisoners it showed me a different side of the men labelled and dismissed as monsters.Throughout the different tales there are haunting descriptions of the New Zealand locations where these crimes took place. Steve ably captures the mood of the people in these communities and the mood of the landscape in which they live.Steve captures a side of the justice system that is not often revealed to the public and bundles it together with beautiful language and phrasing. Highly recommended.

Growing up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, his family’s humorous antics covered deeply-buried secrets—and his Catholic school upbringing, promising spiritual guidance, instead results in a fractured soul.

For young Michael R. McSorley, these confusing double standards are much more than a source of angst and isolation—they are the catalyst that sends his life down a reckless path—a futile attempt to fill the emptiness inside.

In his new memoir, We’ll See, McSorley explores the journey that turned him from altar boy to career criminal overnight—from weathering multiple prison stays starting in his early teens, to eventually finding himself homeless and hunted down by drug dealers in the badlands of North Philadelphia.

As he’s pulled back into the streets time and time again, ravaged by the effects of addiction, he eventually knows his future has come down to a single choice: either come face-to-face with his personal demons or perish.

In this candid personal memoir, you’ll see how McSorley manages to beat the odds and reform his life, the role of spirituality in his recovery, and how he uses his experiences to help others with similar issues today.

Michael McSorley is both a fighter and a gentle soul. I marveled at his ability to think quickly on his feet, while in the midst of some terrifying situations. I felt deep sadness when he revealed the inner struggles of his childhood wounds. He made me laugh throughout the book with his dry humor. It is both a comedy and a tragedy. This book takes you through his many deaths and resurrections. I was truly rooting for the young boy that was taking coffee orders from the sheet metal workers on the construction site. I bought this book for my adult nephews for Christmas. I wanted to convey the message to them that when we fall in life it is about the lessons learned. And then we stand up and begin again......

Excerpt from The Truce of GodNow the day of the birth of our Lord dawned that year grey and dreary, and a Saturday. But, despite the weather, in the town at the foot of the hill there was rejoicing, as befitted so great a festival. The day before a fat steer had been driven to the public square and there dressed and trussed for the roasting.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This is a short story, not a full novel By Ruth Pawlak This short story is essentially a Christmas fable, which tells the story of a selfish nobleman who eventually learns to love his estranged wife as the result of his little daughter's efforts to find a Christmas miracle. The title refers to the period of peace dictated by the church for Christmas. It is very sweet and old-fashioned in tone, but still worth reading.

32 of 33 people found the following review helpful. Another great book from Deanna Lynn Sletten By Gloria Antypowich I eagerly anticipated Maggie's Turn and it did not disappoint me. I became a Deanna Lynn Sletten fan months ago when I read Widow, Virgin, Whore; it was book based on a difficult subject, with a story line that has stayed in my mind as one of the most memorable books I have read. Sletten writes thought provoking stories, with characters so real that her readers relate to them and feel their emotions as they deal with difficult situations. The underlying theme in Maggie's Turn touches on the reality of many marriages in real life. For generations men have felt that their main role is to provide a good home and the necessities of life. The bigger the paycheck and the higher their position in the community, the more successful they feel. They justify their actions with the premise that all the hard work and long hours they spend gives their family the expensive things they want. Even when the wife works, she is often still responsible for the "women's work." These women become the glue that holds the family together, but in the process they sacrifice their individuality and end up feeling unappreciated.Maggie and Andrew Harrison were happy and very in love when they'd married twenty three years earlier, but their relationship had changed greatly as the years passed. Their worlds had slipped apart.Andrew became consumed by his job and his public image. He didn't communicate with his two teenage children and he had no idea or interest in what Maggie's everyday world entailed. In his mind it was insignificant in the big scheme of things. As a husband and a father he was a dropout.Maggie became the one who handled all the demands of keeping their household running smoothly with little or no appreciation expressed by her family. She didn't complain a lot; in fact she didn't consciously intend to change things but one day after she had taken her daughter to school, instead of going home, she spontaneously drove through the intersection and headed out of town. She wasn't planning to leave, she just wanted to indulge a few hours for herself. The miles sped by and the hours passed. Suddenly she realised that she had driven to far to return home, so she got a room intending to return the next day. But the next day she continued on, enjoying the freedom she'd missed for so long. She started on a journey of self-discovery.It was Maggie's Turn. After years of catering to everyone else's needs, Maggie took time out to reassess her life and discover what she wanted. At first Andrew was more angered by the fact that she wasn't there to keep the household running smoothly, than the fact that she was gone, because he simply didn't believe that she would leave. Why would she? When forced to deal with them as a parent, he finds that Kaia, their teenage daughter and Kyle, their nineteen year old son are virtually strangers who have little respect for him. He wants to blame Maggie, but gradually he has to face up to the things he has done and realise that those choices have created his families problems. As Maggie continues on her journey she has opportunity to reflect on the emptiness of the marriage and regain her sense of self. She meets people who see her for the beautiful person she is. Does she actually want to go back to her old life?Andrew is forced to look at what his self centred arrogance and the neglect of his family have cost him. Can he repair the damage or does he offer too little too late? Both Maggie and Andrew have to re-evaluate their relationship. Can it be restored? Are they both willing to try? Or have they drifted to far apart?Don't miss this great read. For me this was journey that both of them took and at times it was very painful and soul searching. It has depth and there are life lessons to learn in it. Deanna Lynn Sleten has done it again!

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Deanna Sletten has done it again! By Amazon Customer Maggie's Turn is delightful! Who hasn't thought of just driving away? Well, Maggie actually does it - without planning, without malice, just drives away. Once again, Ms. Sletten has taken a difficult issue and written an enjoyable, thoughtful story. Her well-developed characters are believable and I especially liked Kaia, Maggie's teen daughter - if you've ever been a teen girl or had a teen daughter, you'll identify with Kaia, as well. My favorite takeaway pearl is "You marry and look forward to all the possibilities together, then slowly come apart as those dreams become reality." So read Maggie's Turn and join her as she drives west in search of herself.

14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Love, love, love Maggie's Turn! By Susan Schleicher Love, love, love this book! I have now read 3 of Deanna's books and I think she just keeps getting better and better! I saved Maggie's Turn so that I could read and savor it while I was on vacation, I knew it would be that good. What a wonderful way to spend my time!Maggie's Turn spoke to me on so many levels. First of all, there's Maggie, as a wife and mother, going through the motions, feeling unfulfilled. Seriously, haven't all of us wives and mothers out there - 'been there, done that'? So I admired (and envied a little bit) the strength and courage of Maggie to just go! "Lately, she felt overwhelmed by it all - home, work, Andrew, and the kids, There never seemed to be a break in everyone's needs and wants." "She had no reason to leave him. As far as he was concerned, her life was perfect."Spoken like a man, albeit a clueless man! "And I lost me."I loved that she had the strength to realize that she was lost and the courage to go out and 'find' herself. I loved experiencing what she went through to realize her self-worth and to gain her self-esteem.Another connection I had to the storyline was the fact that as Maggie is leaving her home and family, she drives through South Dakota on her way west. And she spends a few days in Deadwood. I was reading Maggie's Turn as I was traveling across SD, and you guessed it, on my way to Deadwood. I loved that connection!And.... Maggie ends up buying a Mustang. Guess what? I have a 65 Mustang sitting in my garage! (Needs work, waiting on hubby, *insert sad face here*) I went down that road too; driving kids around, in a van, when what I really wanted was a sports car.Anyway, as I said, I loved Maggie's Turn and I am loving anything that Deanna's writes. She is definitely one of my 'must read' authors - her stories are always so wonderful!

By Dr Trevor J Hawkeswood Book Review: Evil Women by John MarloweThis is a thick paperback of 384 pages also available as a kindle edition. Its a compact and highly readable introduction to the lives, murders and fates of quite a number of horrible females, mostly from the United States of America, although there are quite a few from England, Australia and other places. The following ladies (if I can call them that) receive a profile in this book:Jane AndrewsTracie AndrewsCeleste BeardSue BrassoBetty BroderickJoyce Cohen Adele CravenEvelyn DickNancy DossKathleen FolbriggTracey FrameRita Gluzman Marie HilleyKimberley HrickoElena KiejlichesNancy KisselKatherine KnightAnn Miller KontzShayne LoveraJessica McCordShelly MichaelSharee MillerShawna NelsonDorothea PuenteMargaret RudinPamela Smart Susan Smith Lynn Turner Rosemary West Lisa Whedbee Carl PanzramMary Carol Winkler Misty Witherspoon Susan WrightAileen WuornosMost of the women here outlined in this book murdered their husbands or close friends. Jane Andrews is a total monster who killed her husband by stabbing with a knife and by bashing with a cricket bat and was sentenced to life imprisonment. Tracie Andrews (no relation) is a lunatic who killed her husband alongside a UK highway by stabbing (30 times) him and slashing his throat! Kathleen Folbigg is another insane woman who killed her four young children and claimed they died of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)- she is Australia's first convicted female serial killer. She was sentenced to 30 years in the hard house. Rita Gluzman is a particularly nasty witch who killed her husband and chopped him up into 66 pieces which were stuffed into ten plastic garbage bags. She was eventually caught and sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole.Nancy Kissel poisoned her husband in Hong Kong with various painkillers and sedatives concealed in pink (strawberry) milkshakes. She received mandatory life imprisonment. The list of bad girls goes on and on. Some of those listed here in this book should have been caught and tried well before they were. It is an indictment on police everywhere for failing to apprehend these criminals sooner. This book is recommended as an introduction to criminality and the horrific murders that these criminals carried out. It is a gripping compendium with 8 b/w plates showing most of the criminals.Dr Trevor J. Hawkeswood

Always Ready – Coast Guard Sea Stories from the 1970’s chronicles the experiences and adventures of the author during his eight years of service in the U.S. Coast Guard. In his book, author Mark Holmes recounts fact-based tales of rescues at sea, liberty calls by energetic crew members, rowdy behavior and some raunchy antics by his shipmates, all with a unique perspective on the Coast Guard during the evolving 1970’s. You’ll read about life during boot camp, a daring rescue in mountainous seas, a miraculous recovery of a man overboard, and the inner struggles and successes of Mr. Holmes during the course of his two enlistments. Some dates and the some names of people, places, and institutions have been fictionalized, but the stories themselves are true.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Very entertaining stories of the 1970's Coast Guard! By C. Holmes Thoroughly enjoyed the journey the author took me on from boot camp through his exit from the service. Learned a lot about the resiliency, ingenuity and hilarity of the Coast Guard in the days of less than stellar equipment and funding. The author puts you in the action from daring rescues to very routine days on board the Courageous. Mixed in are several stories about the author's personal life that blends well with the antics of life in the service.Very engaging, short story format makes this a quick but enjoyable read.

I served with the author on the Cutter Courageous and can vouch for his veracity. Mr Holmes has created a book any veteran, but especially sea service veterans, will thoroughly enjoy. Bravo Zulu, Mr. Holmes.

From the mundane to stormy water rescues, this book will give you an extremely genuine look at being in the USCG. I served aboard the Courageous after Mark but the stories are all eerily similar. Great anecdotes and a great read.
