MY DEAR FREDA, Because you are fond of fairy-tales, and have been ill, I have made you a story all for yourself—a new one that nobody has read before. And the queerest thing about it is—that I heard it in Gloucestershire, and that it is true—at least about the tailor, the waistcoat, and the "No more twist!" Christmas, 1901

About the Author British author and artist Beatrix Potter (1866 1943) wrote and illustrated many children's books in the late nineteenth century. She is best known for her enchanting tales and endearing drawings of woodland creatures in human clothes, most notably Peter Rabbit.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. In the time of swords and periwigs and full-skirted coats with flowered lappets - when gentlemen wore ruffles, and gold-laced waistcoats of paduasoy and taffeta - there lived a tailor in Gloucester. He sat in the window of a little shop in Westgate Street, cross-legged on a table, from morning till dark.

It's ideal for a slightly older child. A very sweet story of a tailor, his cat, and a group of mice who save his business when he is too ill to work.

A clean house and a dirty toad By Darien Summers The Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse is yet another example of Beatrix Potter's brilliance in creating a fun and entertaining story for children with the use of animals.Mrs. Tittlemouse is a very tidy mouse who loathes guests that are dirty and drop by unannounced. The later happens quite often due to the many sandy passages leading to her house that attract bugs. Mrs. Tittlemouse spends the first half of the story shuing out unwelcome guests, and then in the second half her most dreaded surprise guest shows up: Mr. Jackson, a pesky honey loving frog that never wipes his feet. A long day follows. After Mrs. Tittlemouse's frustrating day, she begins cleaning for a fortnight. Mr. Jackson does end up coming by again. He is given the honey that he desires, but not granted access to the house.I believe this tale teaches children the importance of being neat, especially in somebody else's home. Also, the fact that Mr. Jackson was given honey in the end adds a nice touch to the tale. It doesn't push revenge, and gently preaches kindness for even the most disagreeable of house guests.Darien Summers, author of The Mischievous Hare, a children's book. The Mischievous Hare

Sure this version of the story for Kindle is not illustrated, so I read the story to my kids at bed time and told them to close their eyes and use their imagination. There is another version of the story for Kindle that you can get for around $6, but the free version works just fine. I am a Christian mommy who is very picky at what I let my kids read/hear/watch and this is a very appropriate book for our standards.(By the way, my little ones are 4 yrs, and 2 yrs in case you were curious what age group I was reading to)

When he passed away he left a gaping wound in our heart. He was such a loving and compassionate person - and his book reflected him to a T. I bought the book yesterday and couldn't put it down (downloaded to my Kindle so I'll have it forever!!). It was as if Marion was there - narrating it. I could hear his voice. I laughed. I cried. I clapped my hands. This book is 100% MARION BARKER and those who purchase it - especially those who knew him - will NOT be disappointed. He was down home southern, ever the gentleman, totally immersed in his family, his friends and his music. He was an accomplished musician, but more than that, he was my friend. Read the book. You'll be glad you took the time to do it. You'll have about every emotion possible while reading it and you'll learn what made Marion who he was. I miss you my friend. Special Note: Marion passed away before his book was complete and ready for publication so his wife Bettina and his daughter Olivia finished the book for him. They knew him so well that their edits and additions are barely perceptible. Marion would love their efforts and he would be so proud!!

In This Is All a Dream We Dreamed, two of the most well-respected chroniclers of the Dead, Blair Jackson and David Gans, reveal the band’s story through the words of its members, their creative collaborators and peers, and a number of diverse fans, stitching together a multitude of voices into a seamless oral tapestry. Capturing the ebullient spirit at the group’s core, Jackson and Gans weave together a musical saga that examines the music and subculture that developed into its own economy, touching fans from all walks of life, from penniless hippies to celebrities, and at least one U.S. vice president.

This definitive book traces the Dead’s evolution from its humble beginnings as a folk/bluegrass band playing small venues in Palo Alto to the feral psychedelic warriors and stadium-filling Americana jam band that blazed all the way through to the 90s. Along the way, we hear from many who were touched by the Dead—from David Crosby and Miles Davis, to Ken Kesey, Carolyn “Mountain Girl” Garcia, and a host of Merry Pranksters, to legendary concert promoter Bill Graham, and others.

Throughout their journey the Dead broke (and sometimes rewrote) just about every rule of the music business, defying conventional wisdom and charting their own often unusual course, in the process creating a business model unlike any seen before. Musically, too, they were pioneers, fusing inspired ideas and techniques with intuition and fearlessness to craft an utterly unique and instantly recognizable sound. Their music centered on collective improvisation, spiritual and social democracy, trust, generosity, and fun. They believed that you can make something real, spontaneous, and compelling happen with other musicians if you trust and encourage each other, and jam as if your life depended on it. And when it worked, there was nothing else like it.

Whether you’re part of the new generation of Deadheads who are just discovering their music or a devoted fan who has traded Dead tapes for decades, you will want to listen in on the irresistible conversations and anecdotes shared in these pages. You’ll hear stories you haven’t heard before, possibly from voices that may be unfamiliar to you, and the tales that unfold will shed a whole new light on a long and inspiring musical odyssey.

This Is All a Dream We Dreamed: An Oral History of the Grateful Dead, by Blair Jackson, David Gans

Review

"This Is All A Dream We Dreamed is an epic jam." ―Vanity Fair

"You could hardly ask for a more ideal configuration for a retelling of the Grateful Dead's story than an oral history, which is, after all, the jam band of biographical formats.... [T]he editors have pulled off the pretty neat hat trick of filling in plenty of cracks for the hard core while providing a basic education for novices. Best of all, they've provided a celebration that never feels remotely like hagiography. Even a nominal fan has to appreciate the wonder and unlikeliness of how the band sustained that first quarter-century or so of magic." ―San Francisco Chronicle

“Despite its title, what makes this book different from all other books on the Grateful Dead is that it is anything but dreamlike. It is down-to-earth, plainspoken, without special pleading or arguments for differing levels of awareness. You didn't have to be there. On many pages, this could be the story of any band-the story as it emerges here carries no pretensions-and elsewhere it is the story of people doing their work. And it is so full of the intensity and repetitions of ordinary life that it throws the work that was done into a new light.” ―Greil Marcus, rock critic

“This epic oral history of the 50-year-old band… is a solid, engaging chronicle.” ―Publishers Weekly

“[Jackson and Gans] know as much as nearly anyone alive about the storied band…. There’s plenty of peace and love here and lots of smoke and psychedelia, as well as the usual Altamont regrets, all voiced by people in and close to the band. Worthy of Studs Terkel and an essential addition to the books of the Dead.” ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“The Grateful Dead, when they were making music together, may have sometimes seemed ‘more than human,’ but they were always the first to admit that they were less than perfect. Here they are, in all their cockeyed glory. Gans and Jackson have orchestrated a shrewd, essential account of the band members’ lives and times, a tale as polyphonic as the ‘electronic Dixieland’ they unperfected through the years, to our (and their) enduring delight and awe.” ―Nick Paumgarten, staff writer, The New Yorker

“Jerry, Kesey, Bobby, Billy, Bear―this amazing book speaks to me out loud, inside my head, in all the voices of the Grateful Dead! It’s an audio illumination of family, fans, and friends, and the long, strange trip. It leaps straight out of the tree-flesh to dance in our dreams.” ―Wavy Gravy

“[A] high-demand backstory...lively oral history.” ―Booklist

"Readers will quickly become absorbed into the Dead's world and will feel that everyone is speaking directly to them.... There may currently be no better introduction to the Grateful Dead than this superior tome." ―Derek Sanderson, Library Journal, starred review

A Must-Read for Any Deadhead Who Wants the Real Skinny By Steve Silberman If you ever wished you could sit around a campfire and talk for hours about the real history of the Grateful Dead with the bandmembers, the extended Dead family, and Deadheads gifted with the ability to put words to hard-to-describe feelings, this is the book for you. I've read most of the major books written on the band, and while most of them were enjoyable reads, this book really gives you the sense of being on the inside, watching historical events unfold from the perspective of the people who made those events happen. Even for the seasoned fan who has a shelf of books on the subject, "This is All a Dream We Dreamed" provides an "Aha! *That's why they did that*!" moment on almost every page. The quotes gathered here are highly illuminating on subjects ranging from the Haight-Ashbury as a funky bohemian neighborhood before the Summer of Love hype set in; the glory and excess of the tours in the early 70s; the problems created for the band as the size of its audience grew exponentially; the challenges they faced as trusted insiders like Lenny Hart ripped them off; the bandmembers' commitment to their craft and to creating musical forms that were open to mystery, spontaneity, and adventure; and the problems faced by a band that had always been very committed to its fans as things grew dark in the early '90s, following the death of Brent Mydland. (Even for a longtime fan like me, the events that culminated in the hiring of Vince Welnick were fascinating and disturbing to read). No punches are pulled here; Blair and David are clearly experts at getting their interview subjects to open up and spill the real story. I was only sad when I reached the end of this book -- I could have read hundreds of more pages. [Disclaimer: I'm quoted in several places in the book, but believe me, I'm only recommending this book because I love it.]

By Stuart Jefferson First off, I'm biased when it comes to the Grateful Dead (GD) so my rating may be a bit high for some--to each his own. And (in case you're wondering) I was lucky enough to read an advance copy of the book several days before it's general release."The music is central to the Grateful Dead culture, but the culture created itself around that music in a number of ways, which in turn affected the music.""If you understand it, if you vibrated with it, it was just incredibly attractive.""We're just playing, getting off, out to have a good time and giving it all a chance to happen." Jerry Garcia."Playing is in fact the best high that I know." Jerry Garcia. This is an oral history of one of the most iconic bands to ever come out of the sixties. Is everything included here new? No. Some things (like the band's formation) you've probably read previously, but the viewpoints all blend together into a good picture of the band and the scene around them, as seen by a number of disparate viewpoints. Intelligently laid out, and written straightforwardly, the many viewpoints are from people who were there at the time--sometimes with a different view of what went down. But that's what gives this book it's appeal--as if you're listening to an anecdote from someone in front of you. And someone else may tell it slightly differently. But there's an authentic feel to these observations that's refreshing--none of this "I heard...", "Someone told me...", etc. This isn't a book filled with second-hand reporting, and that's it's real value. As time slips by, those times way back then seem to cloud over, so it's a good thing that the authors, Blair Jackson and David Gans, have collected and collated enough information before it's really too late. There's probably not two other writers who are such authorities on the GD, and can weave a story like this together using the oral biography approach."A long time ago, we were sort of incidental music at the celebration of life. Which was super cool. Now, however, we're in the position of being rock 'n' roll stars, which is not anywhere near as cool." Jerry Garcia.Included (because the thrust of the book is an oral biography) is a list of people in the book, a list of sources used, a bibliography, and an index of "speakers" and names. There's also eight "Codas", written by different people about various parts of the GD scene which are interesting each in their own way. There's a b&w photo at each chapter heading, that's it."With our scene here, we've managed to employ just about everyone we know in some capacity, because everybody has something they can do." Jerry Garcia."The streets got really, really dirty. It was just insane." Rosie McGee, Grateful Dead family member/insider on the Summer of Love."So, Jerry, you have a record in the Top Ten." "It's not my fault." Jerry Garcia answering Allan Arkush. The book traces not just the band, but gets us closer to the sub-cultrure that grew up around the band that was fully part of the scene back then. But besides the music (and how good the acid was) the band was (rightly) concerned with how their music was marketed by a bunch of "straights in suits". You'll hear from people like Bill Graham, Mountain Girl, John Cutler, Owsley Stanley, John Cippolina, John "Marmaduke" Dawson (late member of one of my favorite bands, NRPS), Wavy Garvy (Merry Prankster), David Crosby, Rosie McGee, Betty Cantor-Jackson, Peter Tork (yes, of The Monkees), members of the band, and a number of others, both well and lesser known, from people in the GD orbit."Right here, I want the sound of thick air." Bob Weir to producer Dave Hassinger, who walked out of the studio."Back in the old days when we were taking acid and stuff, I learned some of my most important musical lessons." Jerry Garcia. With the use of both newer and archival interviews, both published and unpublished, the book traces the story of the GD from their country /bluegrass/blues/rock beginnings, to psychedelic rangers, to a band that found mass appeal relatively late in their careers. The insightful comments and observations really do bring that whole era into a better focus--even if you were lucky enough to be there back then. In this period of the band's big 50th Anniversary, there's a number of books being published about the band. This book is one of the better books that deserves to be on your GD bookshelf."This'll never be the same again. It'll always be something else. It's just a whole different thing." Jerry Garcia on Pigpen's death."To me, psychedelics are a gift of nature that bring tribalism to people." Owsley Stanley."With this rock band I can rule the world!" Jerry Garcia on Owsley Stanley when he first heard the band at the Acid Test."I don't think anybody--still--knows what went on or what happened, or what the true repercussions of the sixties will be." Paul Kantner."My last memories of Jerry are sitting with him backstage going through the sculpture books of Andy Goldsworthy page by page." Wavy Gravy. And two other pretty cool books are "Grateful Memories; Ten Years on the Road Taping the Dead", by Jim Daley, which is his personal account of taping the band from '79-'89. It's a nice look at the scene back then no matter if you were there, or you just want to get an idea of what it was like. The other book is "California Dreams The Art of Stanley Mouse", a collection of Mouse's artwork both in and out of the concert scene. This large size book has very nice reproductions of many of his art pieces including his car-art and his poster work in S.F. Plus, with Blair Jackson's help, Mouse tells the story of his life and times. Check out his piece titled "Need A New Brain", 1993, on page 158. Hmmm.

By Leopold Green This Is All a Dream We Dreamed: An Oral History of the Grateful DeadBoth Blair Jackson and David Gans have decades of love and knowledge of and for the Dead so it made perfect sense for them to write one of this years anniversary books - honestly they could have produced a book of anecdotes and selected articles from 'The Golden Road' and it would have been a fine book but instead they tried something slightly different: "An Oral History"... I assumed when I preordered the book back in the Spring that this meant a selection of interviews and I was both right and so far wrong. Yes obviously it is a collection of interviews since certain key members of the story are - ahem - Dead! But they have woven these stories together and brought in voices both from the immediate Dead circle like Rock Scully, Bear, Robert Hunter and from the wider circles too (like Paul Kantner, Keith "how can I ruin Terrapin Station" Olsen, Country Joe, etc.) and even in one of lovely little codas the Oade Brothers (if you are reading this review and know who they are and haven't bought this book then what are you waiting for!!!). The story that emerges is both well known but surprising in the details, particular some of self-criticism and uncertainties from Garcia and Lesh... some of it is truly tragic (the way they moved away from the dying Pigpen and the fate of Brent are never going to show anything other than a darker side) and yet all of this flows just as the music does to cover all the aspects of our life. This, along with the 50th Anniversary Deadbase are the two Dead related books you really should buy this year... and if you don't know much about the Dead then the stories in this book are fascinating but do yourself a favour and buy the Sunshine Daydream set (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E34A9FU?keywords=sunshine%20daydream%20dvd&qid=1448825463&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1) and you will be a fan for life

I feel connected to the story as if it’s mine. That’s her gift, and I’ll cherish it as long as she decides to write because her work makes me better. 'Bright Side' was one of the most emotional books I’ve ever read…f*** that, it was the most emotional book I’ve ever read and it made me question my life and choices more so than any other art piece has before. 'Gus' was the same. It didn’t strip me raw like 'Bright Side' did (thank Jesus, because I didn’t have anything left), but it impacted me just as deeply. It was emotionally charged, but it was truly the balm I needed for the gaping wound that 'Bright Side' left in my soul.'Gus' was my most anticipated read of the year. I’ve been waiting for his story since I closed 'Bright Side'. The way we left him…his anguish, the sheer devastation of his grief as he faced the horrible prospect of continuing life without his soul mate, his best friend, his bright sun, his everything. To say it was heartbreaking would be a gross understatement. He was a wreck, I was a wreck, it was a mess. It was amazing. So of course, I was dying for his story. I needed to see him whole again as I would a dear friend. I bonded with this character, and I ached for his happiness. His journey was a hard one, and I was in a state of constant anxiety as I watched him battle through his grief. In the beginning of 'Gus', I ached so much for him as he made some devastating choices in order to bear the pain. His actions were reckless, but they were honest. His grief was a living, breathing thing, and it consumed his whole being. Kim Holden portrayed the total devastation that someone feels when they lose someone they love perfectly. She didn’t hold back, but then she couldn’t hold back, because we knew how much Bright Side meant to Gus, so she had to honor her memory and show the great impact that she had on the people she left behind.Gus is an artist, so he’s a sensitive soul and he gives life everything he has, and when life hits him, every part of him is bruised. I must say, I loved this part of the story. No, I’m not into people’s pain, but c’mon, Gus is the epitome of the broken rock star, and unlike other rock star stories where you only get a hint of what they’ve been through, you know Gus’ full story, so you feel the full impact. Knowing who Gus really is makes his transformation from sweet, lovable rock star, to brooding, sexy rock god that much more amazing. Commence the swooning. While Gus battled to come from under his dark cloud, he also had to deal with Scout MacKenzie. The record label assigned her as Gus’ assistant, and Gus couldn't stand it. I. Loved. Scout. From the moment Gus laid eyes on her and nicknamed her Impatient, I knew that their story would be epic. He thought that she was cold and judgmental, and she thought that he was a spoiled rock star a******. I was grinning like a damned fool. Not because I was jonesing for Gus to fall in love (I still wasn’t ready to let go of Bright Side), but because I knew that what he needed was a friend who would tell him to his face that he needed to get his s*** together. With a mix of a lot humor and tolerable emotional angst (and smoking hot sexual tension!), Holden built a friendship between Gus and Scout. They were both dealing with heartbreak and, even though they didn’t know it, their reluctant friendship helped them heal. And isn’t that just exactly what it’s all about? Kim Holden showed me once again that what is important in life is building true and honest relationships with good people. Not with perfect people, since that’s not real, but with people who look at you and see you, and still love you. People who feel your hurt and cry for you. People who try with everything they have to make you smile.I think that Kim Holden is that kind of person. I believe that with her writing she’s acknowledging that she sees us all and she loves us. I think she knows that we hurt, and she hurts with us. I know that she tries to make us smile, even if in order to do that, she has to make us cry first. And yes, 'Gus' will make you smile. By the end of this story, I was smiling so big and so bright. She creates these stories with these characters that are so very identifiable, so that we’ll see ourselves when we read about them, and we’ll have the courage to live to be happy too. Some might call that cheesy, but do you know what I say? Cheese is delicious.Read 'Gus' and feel fulfilled. You don’t have to read 'Bright Side' first, because it can stand on its own, but why wouldn’t you want some Bright Side in your life? It just makes 'Gus' that much better. That’s it though, isn’t it? The pain makes the pleasure so much sweeter.

Kim Holden takes us on a journey of grief, the road traveled by those left behind when a loved one leaves us. It's not pretty. But it's real. As a reader, I rolled through the pain with Gus, I felt it deep inside as if it were my own. I felt his torture. I hit rock bottom with him.But I also rose from the ashes with him.Is this book Bright Side? No, it isn't. It is the book that shows us what Bright Side meant...because doing epic isn't always easy. It's a choice. And Gus had to learn to choose...There are not enough wonderful things that I can say about this book. KH is just...gah. She's amazing. The characters are so well developed and the emotion she draws us unreal. I laughed and cried repeatedly throughout. There was so much love in this book. It is a must read!!!Don't miss out on this book. It is amazing!!!

By DonnaC GUS (Bright Side, #2) by Kim Holden5 stars!!“Grief. Anger. Grief. Anger. Grief...Anger.”After you have read something as perfect as Bright Side you are always going to be nervous reading the sequel, I mean, how can something so perfect ever be matched or even topped? Well, I needn’t have worried at all. As soon as GUS landed on my kindle I was all in from the first to last word. Kim Holden does Gus proud in this book and she has given us a story that was honest, real, emotional, intense and so heart-breakingly genuine that you just fell in love with these characters all over again. Kim Holden has once again touched my heart, I felt it all, the grief, the desolation, the turn around, that eureka moment and all the happy that follows. This book was perfectly balanced and I was so thankful that it rang true to life, losing someone that you are extremely close too is not something that you get over easily and it was never brushed aside, it was raw, but it was perfect.Gus as you could imagine really struggles in the beginning and this is where I felt Kim Holden really hit her stride. As I said above, I felt his pain, I felt his emotions, and I felt his devastation. Gus really struggles to find himself. Bright Side was his other half, his soul mate, how could someone possibly go on when one half of them is missing? I have to say I was really worried about Gus, I knew that this was going to hit him hard, but to see how vulnerable and broken he was, was soul crushing at times. I always knew that he would have to hit rock bottom before he could start his painful clamour to the surface and the way this book was written made that journey all the more honest, genuine and unequivocally believable.“Bright Side wasn’t only my best friend; she was like my other half...the other half of my brain, the other half of my conscience, the other half of my sense of humour, the other half of my creativity, the other half of my heart. How do you go back to doing what you did before, when half of you is gone forever.”Gus in the beginning was a shell of the man that we loved and knew, he couldn’t write, he couldn’t play, he just existed and even then that was up for debate at times. I wanted him to watch the DVD, I wanted him to see what and who he had become, Bright Side wouldn’t have wanted this, he needed to know, he needed to be told but he just wouldn’t listen. He needed to work through his pain and even Bright Side herself had anticipated it, it just went to show how bone deep their connection was, it was beautiful. Stunningly beautiful.“I don’t know to be Gus without her, dude. I’m effing lost as s***.”We finally get that little sliver of light in the form of Scout, I am not going to say too much about Scout but she was the wake-up call that Gus needed. He made her life hell, but she gave back as good as she got. The journey that these two went on was honest and real, no insta love, not even instant friendship but none the less a beautiful, sometimes hilarious read that will have your emotions all over the place. In the beginning these two were by no means perfect together, but they worked, they worked well, they were just what each other needed, they were there for each other, the right place at the right time. The way Kim Holden develops their relationship before your eyes was inspiring, that character connection resonates deep within and once again we have another character that you cannot help but love.“He doesn’t live life, he feels it. I’ve seen it. I’ve seen grief strangle him. And I’ve seen happiness make him glow with a brightness so intense it’s almost blinding. That’s what makes him so special. It’s not his talent or his looks. It’s how much he feels.”Once again though Bright Side is not forgotten, this book was a celebration of her life, how life became after Bright Side but no-one would ever forget, forever at the forefront of people’s thoughts and memories and forever uttering or thinking “what would Bright Side do”? Every time she was mentioned the tears came, I just couldn’t help it and my thoughts would wander back to that orange book that decimated me last year.It was great to catch up with all the characters, no-body was forgotten in this book, while this book is predominantly all about Gus, Gus’s journey would never be complete without his friends and they are all there as one big happy family, even Keller. This is what I loved, Kim Holden brought them all together, they were a unit, they may have lost the anchor that held them tethered together but those friendships were for life and life means life. This was one emotional journey, but it was a necessary evil, the good far outweighs the bad and the journey that Kim Holden takes you on to get there was well worth the tears and the tissues. You have to sit back and salute Kim Holden, the woman is a genius, Bright Side was EPIC, Gus was EPIC, this author is just EPIC. This woman knows how to nail character connection; she brings these people to life. She knows how to nail emotions, she makes me cry even when not intended but most of all you live and breathe it all and that is what I love in a book. I want it to be an experience and this is one experience I will never ever forget. I totally and utterly loved Bright Side but I can honestly say I loved Gus just as much.“Not good things...but epic things. And I’ve fallen in love with epic. It’s the only way to live.”Amazing job Kim Holden, you should be so proud, not only did you do Gus Hawthorne justice but us the reader too. You gave us a raw, emotional, yet uplifting story that will have mended many hearts. But I can’t reiterate enough how much I respect the honesty in this book, it made it for me. It was real, it was believable, dude...it was EPIC.

Many books have been written about the experiences of Europe's Jews during the Second World War, but few stand comparison with this account. Based on the author's own experience, as a teenage partisan interned in a concentration camp in his native Bulgaria, this book paints a vivid picture of the harsh realities of the daily routine. A varied cast of characters - ranging from sadistic paramilitaries to skeletal inmates engaged in a grotesque struggle for survival - is brought vividly to life. The style is terse, direct and uncompromising, making no concessions to sentimentality and eschewing conventional literary flourishes. Interspersed in the text there are quotations from various religious sources - Jewish, Christian, and mystical - underlining the author's belief in the survival of the human spirit in the face of adversity. "Athar" is a highly original, and worthwhile contribution to the literature of the Holocaust, a work of supreme authenticity and artistry. "An extremely original and well-written book." Juliet Annan, Penguin UK

True witness By Avi Shah, Athar, an historical testimony from an era that has tainted mankind history forever, told by a witness to horrifying deeds performed by humans towards humans. The late Shlomo Kalo, using his exceptional writing style, portrays a personal account of one among many, yet one who is still able to observe acutely and be aware to the highest level. The resulting record has an exceptional authenticity, and describes, contrary to other examples, the awakened faith and its strengthening within the Valley of the shadow of death.

A place of uttermost gloom and degradation produces brotherhood and love By Sharona Goren In this book the writer tells about a real place and time in his life, which can easily be seen as traumatic and dire, but to him it is worlds more than that! A place where he and his fellow men were stripped of their humanity and degraded lower than any creature.Only just a youth, he was confined to a prison camp, where the harsh reality of murder, terror, violence and abuse are an every day norm, he finds himself fighting a most acute and overwhelming hunger, fighting to not surrender to the physical demands for food and the overpowering bondage to the body and it’s physical needs. In this state, when all is stripped away, he finds the pure, even holy reality of himself and of those with him. The crude and saintly all come as one to reveal a saintly spirit in the confine of the prison camp and through his witness I found myself loving them all.In this most unlikely situation the narrator learns the most surprising lessons about himself, fundamental lessons causing him to leave that place and time wrapped and invigorated in love. The story is divided into memory segments of his personal experiences as well as observing other individuals around him in that special place and time. At the end of every segment the writer presents a quote of divine inspiration or a short depiction of history that sums up a lesson that he learned, lessons that become a foundation to his understanding. These quotes resonate with the stories the resonance of search for truth, the resonance of a pure spirit and it is so beautiful to see how a youth so starving and neglected turns to the spark of light within him and makes every effort to sustain it and struggles until he even sees it manifest in himself.I found this book exciting, as the lessons that were learned are profound and amazing! And all the men and woman that he encountered touch the heart through his witness. I was completely captured and moved by these stories and I recommend reading this book and seeing how all this happened. This book is profound. It introduces the highest height to the deepest pit. It cleans and purifies the atmosphere, is artistically written yet provides actual facts and eye witness accounts, I highly appreciate this book!

By Natti Ronel Athar is an extraordinary book that tells the personal account of an extraordinary person - the Late Shlomo Kalo, the author. In this autobiographic novel, we are exposed to both the lowest of human mind - that creates cruelty in an unbelievable heartless - but also to its heights - that inspires hope. Surprising at parts, shocking at others - Athar does not leave us at rest, but stimulates our human depth, the Spirit.

For Randall McLean, talking about baseball is as easy as breathing. He can have a casual conversation with anybody on any baseball-related topic. As a baseball aficionado and researcher, Randall (nicknamed "Bando") grew up around baseball, from playing Little League to coaching Little League. In "Baseball and New York: A Poetic Walk", Randall writes on a vast array of all things baseball and New York - from his trips to Cooperstown at the National Baseball Hall of Fame, to his adventurous first and subsequent trips to New York City, including his experience during 9/11. He not only walks you through written historical achievements, but also his own personal baseball stories, which is reflected through his poetry. From his insightful humor and personal viewpoints into baseball, his passion for the game shows through in his writings, not only for the experienced baseball fan, but for those who want to cherish and celebrate history. His love for the sport has inspired him to write "Baseball and New York: A Poetic Walk", his first written homage to the sport. Randall lives with his wife outside Vancouver, British Columbia. I did feel like I had a casual conversation with the author By Kim After reading "Baseball and New York: A Poetic Walk", I did feel like I had a casual conversation with the author, not just about baseball past and present, but also his own personal baseball stories. I must admit that I am not as knowledgeable about baseball, but I do have a better understanding and new found respect for this sport. I truly enjoyed his personal stories ("First Trip", "You Never Know", etc.) as well as reading about players I have never heard of like Jimmie Foxx ("Double X"), Curt Flood ("Opening Doors"), and the Waner brothers ("A Lethal Dose"). What struck me the most was that I also enjoyed reading the poetry which complements so well the chapter that precedes it. I'm not, by nature, a poetry lover, but ever since "Casey at the Bat", I felt like these poems were very intelligent and thoughtful. Read this book! You will enjoy it!PS: I noticed that the Blog (www.baseball-sayitaintso.blogspot.ca) that is found below the description of this book bears some attention. Again, like the book, there are some thought-provoking and intelligent topics that are very well written.

One may be a microcosm for the other though a fan may well be undecided on which one is the representation and which one is reality. When in the moment, sports’ importance can outstrip quotidian cares. When the game is over, the previous two or three hours may seem like a dream or nightmare. Often it is. (Did Buckner really miss that grounder? )In any case, this book by Randall McLean captures certain moments from varied episodes of baseball’s history. As a fan, former player and coach he offers his views from the vantage of the dedicated observer. Interspersed among his chapters on baseball , he includes episodes from his own life, particularly his visits to New York City, including his experiences on Sept. 11. In addition, he gives the reader an offering of his poetry. He presents us with stories and characters both familiar and perhaps slightly less so. The book is an extension of his baseball knowledge as is his baseball blog (see comments section). This book will make a fine addition to the baseball fan’s library.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Harrowing and Realistic, Extremely Moving By Andrew Thomas Horn This is a brutal and honest description of War, set in WWI Austria. The book consists of several different vignettes of various aspects of the war machine, from the trenches to the rearward command. Not just facts, but an deeply emotional investigation into the human cost of battle. The author did a wonderful and horrific job of conveying the fear, anger, injustice and sheer futility of it all.I haven't ever written a review before but felt bound to write something about this amazing piece of writing. Definitely worth reading, FIVE STARS!!!
