Before that he wrote numerous articles about art and artists for Southwestern Art and The Handbook of Texas, until he decided he would rather make art than write about people who did. Always he attempted to pass along whatever he knew as soon as possible, and this book is a continuation of that impulse. He hopes you enjoy reading these stories, as much as he has enjoyed telling them, every time. Randle currently resides in Austin, Texas, with his wife Kathie and a tuxedo cat.

Fogler At the outset, this charming, word of mouth narrative, blending Fable and Allegory by a dedicated artist and teacher, appears to be heavy on whimsy and light on substance. Then, comes the realization, that patience and experience has created a work of "required reading" for students of life in this universe that binds us all no matter what we choose as our "key" in. No matter how we get to the portals of time or dimensions or dreams or reality, we need a guide and a road map. It is a quest to understand the life-force that runs through us and how it is linked to where it lives and how we bind to it. Whether the map is fashioned through art, science, athletics, creating, learning, repairing or healing, it calls to us and we follow and communicate with it by many techniques. Mallory Randle's gift, like a combination of Aesop and Thoreau (for me because of the natural influences of the dessert, the flora, the fauna), whether Bay Ridge or Bay Parkway or the Brooklyn Prep with it's bucolic campus and mixture of geese and ducks and rabbits and children is a perfect site for this journey of self-discovery. I am personally partial to Thoreau, also finding symbols within nature, that bridge the dimensions and the journey toward awareness. When it happens, like "a bolt from the blue" or as the French say so rhythmically and eloquently, "un coup de foudre", he like us will recognize our companions, whether owl or hummingbird or raven or crow or gila monster or coyote. Symbols within our nature, that were aware of things within ourselves ahead of time. As we mature and experience becomes apparent, the "coyote" points the way to cognitive life and the underlying oneness of it. All of our "enlightened symbols" leave a trail that we may follow or just as valid, follows us as long as we stay alert, remain aware and pay attention. Our guides may be Mentors or Shamans. The connection-the awareness of the life-force or the Revelation that binds us all no-matter if the portal is a variation of fauna or flora-the Mentor will guide and coach us. Once their influence takes it's place within, their presence will always be felt...always with you-eternal. Life is music, an inner song, a dance, the great Diapason of Being (the fundamental rhythm or thread) is the love of a creative principle-both the origin and the goal-energy and pulse that drives you to find yourself. It is inseparable from the life-force whether you call it spirit or soul or nature or god-Never Alone. Even if your Shaman or Mentor leaves the physical world, as did the author's in Ontario Canada, 10/8/2004, you will not be deserted. Like the "song" (Sondheim) says, when you are out there travelling through the woods, "Sometimes people leave you, half-way through the woods...But, you are not alone; No one is alone!" They are always with you, because of the connection, the rhythm, the thread, the love, the Diapason. Whether teacher, mentor or guide, Mallory Randle rose to his true purpose via his art in The Tale of the Owl and the Dragon Riddle. I am not a fan of "spoiler alerts" nor do I want you to avoid "the reveal" of this gem of a book for yourselves. The pleasure for a great teacher is accomplishing the living proof of education's definition by avoiding "stuffing" bits of information into their student's heads, rather than drawing it out of them. Thus, the mentor or guide or teacher, like the great potter, molds and directs the process of getting to the fundamental truth. In the end, it leads to the true identity by no matter which route, the great teacher allows you to find yourself and in so doing he is no longer needed. Molding, extracting, building, staying alert, being aware-and bringing you into the Light is Blair. Yes, Mallory Blair Randle, the inside/outside touch of his preferred name or his name of fundamental identification, rarely heard except in the company of close friends or relatives. Perhaps it is most appropriate that this journey of self-awareness and embedding the indelible sense of consciousness that links us all to the nature of life is "wrapped-up" by a graduation incident by the "Raven's Cousin and Meryl Streep", the Prep's most celebrated parent. Arguably our most versatile and gifted actress and a "force of nature" herself, was speaking at the graduation of her youngest daughter and shared a heartfelt "chuckle", with Mr. Randle simultaneously amused by The Crow's obvious message. With a "cawing" that pierced the quiet and emphasized the wisdom of the insight shared by all the living creatures present at this auspicious gathering, making yet another of life's transitions witnessed for all to see and share at a commencement ceremony. The Remarkable Universe of Coyote Wisdom By Bill Ardis There are several names for a person who is a deep life teacher: Shaman, guru, master, and Seer spring to mind. Rarely is that person also an artist and teacher who works in clay and sees animals in nature as sources of wisdom who can deepen his own comprehension. And, further, can tell stories that clarify routine, existential life choices. Mallory Blair Randle – “Blair” to his friends and family – is such a person. He has composed this book of linked stories in an ancient tradition: sharing experience in a way that others may be attuned to the value of simple incidents in their own lives. In this way, Blair helps us to welcome and enjoy the surprises that life offers at each moment. He calls this process of learning, for him, Coyote Wisdom. Among other facets of his book, Blair regularly communes with animals in nature (as well as his students and friends), showing them respect and attention in a way that deepens his own comprehension of the animal world – that is, the world we live in and share. As these conversations emerge, the reader becomes accustomed to Blair’s casual, respectful exchanges with the coyote, gila monster, raven, blue jay and others. Thus we become aware that English is not the language of choice here, but a bolder psychic communication which supersedes spoken, literal words, language so often ordinary. And psychic links, as we know, are far deeper than mere spoken language: the instinct for instantaneous communication, one living being to another. Thus, the teacher teaches. And we learn as he tells his stories, to us and to his students in life. Mallory Blair Randle’s book on Coyote Wisdom opens the doors of perception ever wider, in a remarkable, effortless way.
