0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. One of the great books about the theater By Music Man "Dressing Room Stories" has the excitement of a great short story collection. It strikes me as a must-read for anyone interested in the theater--or anyone interested in the cultural history of America. Epstein is not only one of America's finest actors, but he has led an extraordinary life--as a soldier in World War II, as a student in Paris alongside Marcel Marceau, as a performer in the very earliest days of the Israeli state (speaking Hebrew for the first time in his life), as co-star to Orson Welles and Bert Lahr, as student of Martha Graham. He has fascinating (and sometimes hilarious) stories to tell about his life on- and offstage, and Jonathan Fried has finally captured some of them in this wonderful book; he has also preserved Epstein's disarming voice.The insights Epstein offers on "King Lear" and "Waiting for Godot" are revelatory (I think I may finally have a grasp on those difficult works, which have eluded me for decades). But I was mesmerized from beginning to end. "Dressing Room Stories" lifts the reader into Epstein's extraordinary life and allows one to see the world through his eyes. I've loved his work for many decades, and even been privy to some of these stories first-hand. Jonathan Fried has organized them masterfully. Can we please have Volume Two?

What a gift this book is- the stories are poignant, funny illuminating, and uplifting. Anyone who is interested in theater, art or in life itself should read this delightful book.
