NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTUREThe harrowing, true account from the brave men on the ground who fought back during the Battle of Benghazi.13 HOURS presents, for the first time ever, the true account of the events of September 11, 2012, when terrorists attacked the US State Department Special Mission Compound and a nearby CIA station called the Annex in Benghazi, Libya. A team of six American security operators fought to repel the attackers and protect the Americans stationed there. Those men went beyond the call of duty, performing extraordinary acts of courage and heroism, to avert tragedy on a much larger scale. This is their personal account, never before told, of what happened during the thirteen hours of that now-infamous attack. 13 HOURS sets the record straight on what happened during a night that has been shrouded in mystery and controversy. Written by New York Times bestselling author Mitchell Zuckoff, this riveting book takes readers into the action-packed story of heroes who laid their lives on the line for one another, for their countrymen, and for their country. 13 HOURS is a stunning, eye-opening, and intense book--but most importantly, it is the truth. The story of what happened to these men--and what they accomplished--is unforgettable.

By Margaret M Hemmer I loved the background of Benghazi's history in the beginning and how it transitioned to the events of 2012. The fast paced, down to earth account given by the survivors made me swell with pride that there are good guys out there, willing to take on evil to protect others and what we should all hold dear. I would recommend this book to anyone who is on the fence about what happened that horrible day and hope they would see how everything they see in 1 minute sound bytes is not always the whole story.

It is the account of what happened during the attack on our diplomatic outpost and CIA annex by the heroic defenders of the compounds. The book describes what the State Department's security team experienced during the attack. The book contains little of the political back and forth just the facts of what happened during the attack. The book reads like a great thriller novel. The story shows heroes still exist in this world of ambivalence.

The brave surviving defenders who largely relate this sad event clearly want it this way By Newt Salamander Factual account of the desperate fight the defenders of our Benghazi outposts undertook. I bought this book 9/10 at Costco and finished early this morning 9/12. The author makes it quite clear this is purely a factual account - no politics. And there shouldn't be any. The brave surviving defenders who largely relate this sad event clearly want it this way.Kudos to the author. And Bravo Zulu to the defenders.

“The Hare on the Stare: An Easter Tale” (annotated version) is one of S.P. Getty’s proudest accomplishments. Getty uses his whimsical words to carry the imaginations of readers and listeners through an incredible adventure where Getty reveals there is more to the Easter story than what people may truly know or believe. We know from centuries-old tradition that, on Easter eve, the Easter Bunny visits homes to reward well-behaved children with special gifts, such as colored eggs, candy, and toys. In the “Easter Tale”, Getty expands on Easter Bunny folklore with an inspiring tale that explains how those lovable little Pixie Hares find the Passion and the will to travel both near and far to visit happy homes in days leading up to Easter. A wish from the Easter Bunny is that, on their journey, Pixie Hares witness and inspire acts of kindness, generosity, and integrity, and foster many lasting friendships through fun and play. Getty’s “Easter Tale” demonstrates that going great distances to find the good in everyone, including ourselves, is a noble path to follow. It also shows that sometimes you have to take a break from it all in order to discover or come back to what is most important. Time, however, doesn’t stand still. The Pixie Hare, even while keeping a constant watch over things, knows that it must return to the burrow before Easter, but not before making a promise to come again. The final message in Getty’s “Easter Tale” is one of faith, and one that pays homage to the real Easter story. But every time you read this divinely layered story, you are bound to have leaps of fun as more motivating lessons are likely to jump from each page only to land deep in your heart. “The Hare on the Stare: An Easter Tale” is something that families and teachers will share for years to come. Excerpts “Near the holiday, and this might seem a bit funny, Pixie Hares hop to each house BEFORE the Easter Bunny.” p. 7 “When it looks safe to go, I hop on my way, with small voices behind me cheering “Hop, Hop, Hurray!” p. 11 “Ever hear of hide-and-seek? It’s my favorite thing to play.” p. 21 “You can show me more games, even show me you’re a good helper.” p. 24 When to Read: Before Easter; For devotion or inspiration; To reinforce good behavior; Before playing games; Anytime just for fun! Written and Illustrated for: Play and Listener Participation (e.g., staring contest, seek and find, name game) Patterns and Repetition Identification Rhyme and Sound Recognition (funny/bunny, hare/stare) Teaching Morals and Lessons (e.g., faith, family, courage, kindness, friendship, forgiveness)

He always tries to come up with a different name for the Pixie Hare, each time we read this book. He has a ton of books to choose from for bedtime stories (we usually read 3-4). This book is in the rotation a few times each week. He never gets tired of the story and loves looking at the pictures by himself to make up his own version. This is definitely a must have for any child's bookshelf, and I cannot wait to get the other stories.

A Catalog of Child Molesters and Pedophiles in Baptist Churches. The Big Book of Bad Baptist Preachers is evidence of the epidemic of child molesting in conservative Baptist churches. It's a catalog of 100 cases of preachers and churches involved in these sad and horrific cases. In none of these cases was the child molester rebuked, defrocked, or excommunicated. Each case gets a 1-3 page synopsis of events, including criminal charges, investigation findings, plea agreements, sentencing, church response. Each case includes a short table that synopsizes the bare facts.

  • Read about the church spokesman whose first concern after the pastor was arrested for child molesting was the church's attendance levels.
  • Read about church after church that rallied around the perpetrator, even after the criminal case was proved, rather than the child victim.
  • Read about the church whose pastor allowed the congregation to drive the victim to suicide.
  • Read about the pastor who put a 15 year old rape victim before the church for church discipline as an adulteress.
From the pastor who tied up little boys in the basement and photographed them, to the pastor whose deacons allowed him to prey on children for twenty years, this book proves that child molesting is part and parcel of conservative Baptist church culture. It's undeniable.

The Big Book of Bad Baptist Preachers: 100 Cases of Sex Abuse of Children and Exploitation of the Innocent, by Jeri Massi

Review "The Big Book of Bad Baptist Preachers challenges the notion that sexual abuse by clergy is just 'a Catholic problem.'" - Bob Allen, Baptist News Global"Thanks to Jeri Massi for this powerful contribution to documenting Baptists' unholy patterns of do-nothingness with respect to child-molesting ministers. Sadly, the stories in Massi's book are not outliers or "bad apples." With its methodical organization, Massi's book unites the stories so as to illuminate the institutionally entrenched denial that allows clergy child molesters to move so easily through the porous sieve of Baptist churches." - Christa Brown, Stop Baptist Predators"If you are looking for a summary of the notable sex scandals that have rocked the Southern Baptist Convention and IFB church movement over the past two decades, The Big Book of Bad Baptist Preachers is the book for you." - Bruce Gerencser, The Life and Times of Bruce Gerencser "I'd recommend that any Baptist church out there grab a copy of this andcompare the names to the people who may be attending their conferences, running camps their kids attend, or (God forbid) teaching or preachingat their own church." - Darrel Dow, Stuff Fundies Like

From the Author The depravity of the 100 cases in this book is shocking. What is even more shocking is that Baptist churches continue to refuse to address this issue, declining to create a database of sexual offenders, declining to revoke the ordination of child molesting preachers, declining to expel dangerous felons from fellowship. Not one church in this catalog did any of the above. These conservative churches will unite to keep women out of the pulpit. They will unite to keep adult gay men and women out of their pews. But they claim that they cannot unite to expel child molesters from the ministry or from their churches.

From the Back Cover This encylopedic catalog narrates cases, provides news media references, and identifies pastors and churches who protected clergy that abused children. It is an A-Z reference on bad and dangerous Baptist clergy, and the churches that have supported and covered for child molesters and pedophiles in the ministry in conservative Baptist churches.

7 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Documentation of Baptists' unholy patterns By Christa Brown Thanks to Jeri Massi for this powerful contribution to documenting Baptists' unholy patterns of do-nothingness with respect to child-molesting ministers. Sadly, the stories in Massi's book are not outliers or "bad apples." With its methodical organization, Massi's book unites the stories so as to illuminate the institutionally entrenched denial that allows clergy child molesters to move so easily through the porous sieve of Baptist churches. And lest you delude yourself into thinking the kids are safe now that the perpetrators are named in a book, realize that, although it's a "big book," it presents only a small time-slice of cases that, for the most part, involved criminal charges and convictions. Since experts generally agree that less than ten percent of child molesters wind up in the criminal justice system, this means that the stories in Massi's book are just the tip of the iceberg. But unlike other major faith groups, most Baptist groups have shown themselves content to simply ignore the rest of the iceberg because, as Massi points out, they have refused to keep any sort of systematic denominational records on abuse reports against Baptist clergy. Since Southern Baptists are the largest Protestant denomination in the land, this institutional failure leaves many thousands of kids at undue risk for the soul-searing harm of clergy sex abuse.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Compendium of Baptist Scandals By Bruce Jeri Massi recently asked me if I would do a write-up for her latest book, The Big Book of Bad Baptist Preachers. I am delighted to do so. While Jeri and I are philosophically as far apart as two people can possibly be, we both share a desire to expose predators and child abusers who just so happen to be Baptist preachers. Thanks to an ecclesiology that turns pastors into rulers, potentates, and kings, many abusive Southern Baptist and Independent Fundamentalist Baptist (IFB) preachers have ready access to potential victims. Accountable only to themselves, these predator pastors assault others with impunity. Church members are conditioned to not question the man of God’s behavior, out of fear of God’s judgment if they do.Often, acts of abuse are quietly swept under the rug. The offending pastors, under no ecclesiastical authority but their own, leave, move down the road to a new church, and start over. In many instances, the new church is not aware of past misconduct. This is especially true when the predator pastor starts a new church. Since there is no central database for checking whether a pastor has committed crimes or been fired for alleged misconduct, church members are often unaware of their pastor’s checkered past. And sometimes they know, but like sheep to the slaughter, they consider their pastor’s past “sins” as “under the blood of Jesus” and forgiven. Sadly, this allows these pastors to continue to abuse. The Big Book of Bad Baptist Preachers is a compendium of 100 pastors who were accused and/or convicted of misconduct. Each pastor’s crimes are listed, along the outcome, if any, with regard to their predatory behavior. If you are looking for a summary of the notable scandals that have rocked the Southern Baptist Convention and IFB church movement over the past two decades, The Big Book of Bad Baptist Preachers is the book for you.Jeri plans to update the book next year. One thing is for certain: the abuse will continue until churches and denominations decide to aggressively expose abusive pastors and make sure they can never preach again. And this means Jeri will have more sordid stories to add to The Big Book of Bad Baptist Preachers.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Important Document for Today's Sex Abuse Scandals in the Church By Rebekah Palmer In this resource, Jeri Massi documents the glaring need in southern baptist and independent baptist churches for a victims assistance program. She prefaces the book with what the Scriptures address in regards to what Biblical discipline is all about: ridding the flock of perversion regardless of position in the ministry. Any pastor or ministry leader truly concerned with the safety and souls of the children and women in the church should have a copy of this valid research on his desk.

I was in country at the time of these happenings and the Operations of Coral and Balmoral were on every bodies minds Ask yourself why was a CIA agent planted in a very small Australian out post. Why just after the TET offensive was the Australian Task Force moved out of Phuoc Thuy, leaving the VC/NVA to move as they pleased. Some interesting questions indeed. When the writer asked for Artillery support to engage the enemy was he told to let them pass or the Artillery may be directed to his position. This book goes a long way to explaining all this and should deserve some answers from the big boys upstairs

Review Mysterious and masterfully crafted, Smoky Trudeau Zeidel's The Cabin draws the reader into a world in which reality swims, and truth is a thread of love through time. When protagonist James-Cyrus Hoffman inherits his grandfather's farm, he discovers he has inherited more than land, his lineage bearing the passions, transgressions, and scars of his ancestors. A thoughtful, provocative, satisfying story that challenges not only the protagonist's sense of time and place but the reader's as well. --Patricia Damery, author of Snakes, and Farming Soul: A Tale of InitiationSmoky Trudeau Zeidel brings to this magical and compelling historical fantasy an obvious and highly detailed love of plants and animals, mountains, dreams, and the old wisdom of one attuned to the mysteries of the natural world. --Malcolm R. Campbell, Campbell Editorial, author of The Sun Singer and SarabandeA breathtaking journey back and forth through time, through dream-space, and through magical realms. A celebration of the power of love and reverence for life that knows no limits or bounds. --Donna Henes, author of The Queen of My Self

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Smoky Zeidel does it again By Joey Madia Smoky Zeidel is a writer who, when they produce something new, leads us to drop everything, get a firm hold of their book, and carve out ample time to dive deeply beneath the waters of their words for as long as the capacity of our mental lungs to hold our breath allows. I cannot tell you much about the story told in The Cabin. Or, more accurately, I choose not to. Because almost anything I would tell beyond the broad strokes in the next paragraph would ruin your experience. Muddy the waters into which you have to dive. And it’s harder to hold your breath with the silt of story give-aways floating about.I can tell you that The Cabin’s characters are primarily a family who has lived in the same geographical area—the Allegheny Mountains of (West) Virginia for many generations—who have seen the best and worst of humankind through the American Civil War, slavery, and the changes that came with the new century. I can tell you that the story involves fairy stones, and the Power of Belief to defy all temporal–spatial barriers. And I can tell you that it involves, as my title gives away, Time Travel. What I should have named the review is “Time Travel Made (to Look) Easy,” although that does not exactly roll off the tongue, which would be a particular disservice to Zeidel, because she truly is a Technician: her sentences move like the rivers and winds she often writes about in her poetry and prose. And I say that it is Made (to Look) Easy because, true to her strengths as a Technician, the complex plot, moving as it does between time and space, never carries the thornier burdens of that trope, as it often does with the stories told by, for instance, J. J. Abrams or James Cameron (each of whom are masterful Storyteller-Technicians). I think that is because, in The Cabin, it is not science fiction; it not a clever device employed for jazzy storytelling. It is an inherent, crucial part of the tale Zeidel tells, and, like the audience who brings Tinkerbell back to life in stagings of Peter Pan through the Power of Belief, we as readers must contribute to making the magic happen. Yes, of course, it ends how it ends, but how much we invest is up to us.I invested deeply, which speaks to Zeidel’s ability as a Storyteller. She blends her thorough, far-ranging research (once again, the Technician) with exquisitely drawn characters, a beautiful way of describing geography, and a knack for bleeding things down to core emotional values that puts her writing on a mythological level. I felt it in The Storyteller’s Bracelet, in her recent book of poetry, and here in The Cabin. You cannot teach that. It begins as a natural gift, coupled with tens of thousands of hours with pen in hand or fingers on a keyboard. In a world where jazzy tropes like CGI and gravity-defying fights are the new standard for what passes as storytelling, books like The Cabin and writers like Smoky Zeidel remind us that there is much, much more, if only we know where to look.

A mother's love transcends time By Sherri Morris Corrine finds a beautiful stone that although she was raised to acknowledge the magic of the mountains, she fails to realize their magic. ~30 years later in a time realm not her own, she finally understands. Is it in time to save her daughter? And will her granddaughter understand 13 years later?I was given this title for free with my agreement to write a review. It has been my pleasure to read this tale and I wish Miss Zeidel a long and successful career.

By Amazon Customer A Ship of Many Oars---This debut collection of nine short stories by a refreshingly imaginative writer is a laugh riot. Following a wide array of genres, very different from each other and ranging across varied and contrasting scenarios, from dust laden villages to celestial courts where ever humanesque Gods dwell on the fate of lesser mortals, from the decadent palaces of the Nawabs of yore, to the tropical, death-riddled battlefields of Burma, the stories are diverse, yet uncomplicated, each tale reflective of the author’s penchant for “all that is imperial, ceremonial, martial and simply ludicrous”. Written in decisive and riveting prose there is however a gentle old fashioned courtesy and charm about his work, so reflective of his own personality. For a debutant novelist his ouvre is amazingly diverse, his writing style inventive, inspired and seriously funny. A must have on one’s book shelf to chase away the megrims !

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. interesting read!! By Amazon Customer A "Ship of Many Oars" very aptly compiles a series of stories borne out of the author's figment of imagination and experience. It is a beautiful blend of stark reality and a make-believe world. As a reader, one finds it an engrossing experience no matter which story you read or flick through. Crisp anecdotes are laced with humour in some stories (The Wondrous Star) while the others are a testimony to the past(The Hermit),taking the reader through a journey of mixed thought and emotion. The lucid and simple style of narration makes an easy navigation all through for the readers. As a maiden attempt, the author has made a very good effort to kick-start his new passion-writing.

The Mike Huckabee Story

An Intimate Look

For the first time, the former governor of Arkansas opens up the vault to friend and biographer W. Scott Lamb (Pujols: More Than the Game, 2011) to tell his life story. In this thoroughly unique biography of one of the most likeable, influential leaders in America, Lamb covers the entire scope of Mike Huckabee’s life and career. With full, unfettered access to Governor Huckabee’s personal library, files, and family records, fans will finally get the definitive account of one humble man’s rise to political prominence.

Readers are introduced to young Michael Dale Huckabee, son of a local fireman in Hope, Arkansas. Huckabee would soon share the same grade school teacher as Bill Clinton, who is nine years his senior. Huckabee’s collegiate aspirations took him to Ouachita Baptist University, where he graduated in two and a half years and met his future wife, Janet. Huckabee also honed his musical talents, becoming a bass player and forming the band Capitol Offense. Later he would also serve at the side of television personality James Robison during the early years of his television ministry. He hit his ministerial stride in the early 1980s, when he took the helm of Immanuel Baptist Church in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, from 1980 to 1986.

Most people, however, know Mike Huckabee as a politician. In 1994, he became lieutenant governor and faced the now infamous Whitewater scandal that sent then-governor Jim Guy Tucker into court to face felony charges of corruption and fraud. In the interim Huckabee decided to run for governor, but not before Tucker would change his mind at the eleventh hour and cause a statewide constitutional crisis that challenged Huckabee to the core. Huckabee’s courageous handling of the debacle endeared him to the hearts of many citizens, causing him to serve as the forty-fourth governor of Arkansas from 1996 until 2007.

Huckabee also takes a good look at other difficult decisions he faced. In 2000 he granted clemency to prisoner Maurice Clemmons, who, while on parole, moved to Washington State and murdered four policemen in 2009. Huckabee was forced to field question after question about this case during his 2008 presidential bid—a race in which he finished second to John McCain.

Today, Mike Huckabee is known for his television program on the Fox News channel and as a potential contender for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016. His many fans will now have the opportunity to get to know the man behind the famous, reassuring smile.

Huckabee: The Authorized Biography, by Scott Lamb

From the Inside Flap This book will give a greater understanding of this good man to every reader. --Rex M. Horne, Former President of Ouachita Baptist University...provides an objective but sympathetic introduction to the colorful life of Governor Mike Huckabee. Lamb has caught the essence of the man, the essence of his character, and has revealed the gentle spirit of a great man. One may not agree with all of Lamb's conclusions, but what is important is that he has provided us with an accurate portrayal of a man whose Christianity has permeated the deepest levels of his life. This book is a great read for this year.--Paige Patterson, President of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary Scott Lamb brilliantly captures the remarkable journey of Mike Huckabee. --James Robison, Founder and President, LIFE Outreach International  You will feel your own spine stiffen with resolve as you read this enjoyable biography of Huckabee, written by our friend Scott Lamb." --David and Jason Benham  If you thought you knew the Governor before reading this book, think again!--Stu Epperson, Jr., President of The Truth Network

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. In-depth, Informative, and overall a great read. Scott Lamb has written a great biography of a great man! By Kyle Robertson This is one of those books that I will buy and make my daughters read when they are older. Not only is it full of fascinating history, but it also shows how hard work, determination, strong moral character, and a solid faith in God can positively shape and impact your life. I am very thankful to Thomas Nelson – W Publishing for this free ARC on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I was interested in reading this book because I am both very interested and very familiar with the subject matter. I am good friends with Mike Huckabee’s son David. But that relationship does not bias my review, as I will speak about both Scott Lamb and the content of the book. This review will be somewhat longer than my normal reviews because it is a biography. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and Mr. Lamb’s writing style. I was fascinated by the history and stories throughout the book. I am also good friends with Dr. Lester Sitzes III, lifelong friend of Mike Huckabee that is mentioned and quoted throughout the book. Lester told me that Scott Lamb interviewed him and that he is a very nice guy. Each chapter of the book starts out with a memorable quote either from or about Mike Huckabee that is pulled directly from its respective chapter. I also noticed that the chapter names are unique, many named after famous songs or lyrics. The book is broken down into four different parts, each dealing with a specific time period in Huckabee’s life. Part One gives an extensive history of Hope, AR, and Texarkana TX/AR, the Huckabee family lineage, and a little bit about the Clinton family and how their lives paralleled and intersected at various points. Part One takes you up through age 5. I could tell that Lamb definitely performed hours of research just for this section alone, and you will appreciate the history as it provides a backdrop for the rest of the story.Part Two talks about Huckabee’s school years: little league sports, the start of his broadcasting career (at age 12), Nixon, desegregation, the start of his political career (junior high student council), charity work, bible studies, the start of his evangelistic career, and two (of four) major trips that would impact the trajectory of his life. Lamb draws from various classmates and community members to provide commentary for these years. My mother-in-law has told me stories of how she remembers a young Mike Huckabee giving student council campaign speeches that would knock your socks off. The two trips from this period that would impact his life were: 1) Representing Arkansas at a space seminar at Cape Canaveral Space Center in Florida, and 2) Attending Boys State, where he was elected “governor”.Somewhere around this point in the book I began to realize that the author jumps ahead a lot. For example, just when you think you have moved on to Huckabee’s college years, he takes you back to the beginning of his senior year in high school. It is somewhat confusing, but not terribly. The purpose is to show how one event leads to another down the road, then he goes back to where he was in the timeline.Part Three picks up directly after Boys State and finds Huckabee and Lester Sitzes hitting the road to Dallas to attend Explo ’72, hosted by Billy Graham and Bill Bright (founder of Campus Crusades for Christ), to join nearly 100,000 young Christians for a week of intense Bible study, prayer, music, and discipleship training. This was the third trip that shaped his life. After Boys State, many community and state leaders urged Huckabee, now 17, to pursue a career in law and politics. However, after Explo ’72, Huckabee veered away from the political world and began to turn to a different vocation. In his senior year, Huckabee was very active on the debate team, and he was voted “most outstanding senior” by the school faculty. After graduating he began to lead youth revival services at various local churches, and he worked as a writer for the Baptist Missionary Association. The fourth trip that impacts Huckabee’s life is a trip to Israel in the summer of 1973, just prior to entering college. This would be his first of more than forty trips since then to the Holy Land. Huckabee enrolled in college at Ouachita Baptist University (OBU) in Arkadelphia and plowed through the coursework to graduate magna cum laude three semesters early. He was the first male in his line to ever attend college. During his time at OBU Huckabee pastored a church, DJ’d for a local radio station, worked as a custodian, got married, and helped his new wife defeat spinal cancer. Mike Huckabee married Janet McCain, his high school sweetheart, in May of 1974. There is also a section here that provides a short history of the Southern Baptist Convention and the Arkansas Baptist State Convention. After graduating from OBU at age 20 Huckabee enrolled in Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth. During the first year Mike and Janet welcomed their first son, John Mark. While enrolled at the seminary, Huckabee took the advice of one of his professors to put seminary on hold to take an offer of a full-time job in evangelist broadcasting. This advice, Huckabee says, began a whole chain of events in his life that led him to the Arkansas governor’s office.Huckabee was one of the organizers of the Freedom Rally that was held at Dallas Reunion Arena. This rally was sparked by the removal of Huckabee’s boss, James Robison, from local station WFAA because of a sermon in which Robison denounced homosexuality. It was here that the Moral Majority was born, which gave the framework for the National Affairs Briefing. Ed McAteer, a member of Adrian Rogers’ church, formed a political caucus called the Religious Roundtable, with such members as Pat Robertson, Charles Stanley, and Jerry Fallwell. The Religious Roundtable convened at Reunion Arena in 1980 with more than 15,000 evangelicals in attendance. Special guest Ronald Reagan also attended and spoke, a move that helped him move into the White House. At this event, Mike Huckabee first witnessed the convergence of politics and religion, and how both could be used together for the good of the country. But instead of diving into politics after this event, Huckabee moved his family to Pine Bluff, AR, where he became pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church. The Huckabees welcomed their second son, David, in 1980, and a daughter, Sarah, in 1982. While in Pine Bluff Huckabee had to deal with racial tension and racial divides among church members, to which he stood a firm ground that Christians should be color-blind. In 1986, the family moved to Texarkana, AR. Beech Street First Baptist Church was in need of a pastor, and they called on Huckabee to join them and replicate the television ministry he had created in Pine Bluff. During his time here, Huckabee would be elected president of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention. In 1990, Mike and Janet read and studied the popular book “Experiencing God: Knowing and Doing the Will of God” by Henry Blackaby. Through their study of this book it became clear to them that God was leading Mike to resign his pastoral ministry to run for political office.Part Four begins with Huckabee’s first political campaign for U.S. Senate, which was a bold move. Not only did Huckabee not have any national political experience, but he would be up against a democratic incumbent in an election year where Bill Clinton (also a democrat) would likely win the White House. At this time, Arkansas was a blue state. What this meant is that Arkansans would likely show up in force at the polls to vote for Clinton, almost assuring that the senate seat would remain with the incumbent. Many close friends tried to talk Huckabee out of the idea, while others thought that running for that particular seat was a genius plan to actually put him in line for the governor’s mansion instead. Huckabee claims that there was no genius plan, instead he just believed that he could win the election. With his mind made up, Huckabee’s friends and supporters gathered together and swept through the state on a grassroots campaign. Huckabee lost that race, but it did put him in a good position to win a special election for lieutenant governor. Clinton was elected president, Jim Guy Tucker moved up to governor, and that left the lieutenant governor’s office vacant for a special election. So Huckabee, who had state recognition from his recent campaign, was primed to win the office. Then, in early 1996, Senator Mark Pryor announced that he would be vacating his seat. Huckabee jumped at the chance to run for senator again, but the campaign would only last a few months. In May 1996, Governor Tucker was convicted of fraud in a Whitewater-related case and had to resign his office. Huckabee withdrew from the senate race to move in to the governor’s office. Once he was secured in the governor’s office, Huckabee struggled to find common ground with both the House and the Senate because the democrats were in the majority. He initially faced harsh criticism for decisions he made from the media as well as the majority party. Later on in his tenure, the state of Arkansas would develop a website, and email would come along to provide his staff the means to streamline government processes (like vehicle registration and taxes) and push information out to citizens of the state. Huckabee next focused on creating ARKids First, a program to provide insurance for kids from lower-middle class homes. He then set initiatives to support programs affecting environment and conservation. Huckabee went on to easily win re-election in 1998, and he soon began to develop a plan to improve the poor highways of Arkansas. He also gained a better standing with the media during this time. In 2000, the Huckabees planned an extensive renovation of the governor’s mansion. You may remember the many jokes that came out of this period due to the fact that the family relocated to a triple-wide on the grounds. I have been inside that triple-wide home, and it was nothing to laugh about. In his third term, Huckabee set out to improve the educational infrastructure of the state. The Supreme Court of Arkansas called for education reform that would level the playing field for all schools in regards to state and federal funds. His first initiative was the consolidation of small school districts and to streamline the administration of the entire system. The second initiative was aimed at improving students’ math and reading skills. The third (and most controversial) initiative was to pass a bill affording educational opportunities to children of illegal immigrants. Though his staff and supporters pleaded with him that this would be political suicide, Huckabee stood his ground and charged forward. The bill, however, was ultimately defeated. Huckabee received national praise during his final term in office: 1) Named one of the Top 5 Governors of 2005 in “Time Magazine”; 2) Given the AARP Impact Award, which was awarded to those who have done something extraordinary to make the world a better place; and 3) Named Official of the Year by “Governing Magazine”. Of course he was not without criticism either. Some conservative groups attacked Huckabee for his state spending, calling him a liberal in disguise. To this day, these groups are active in funding campaigns against him. Also in 2005, Huckabee gained national attention with three different events: 1) He led a public ceremony of covenant marriage, putting a spotlight on the high divorce rate in Arkansas; 2) He ran a marathon and published a weight loss book highlighting a two year journey of improving his health; and 3) He earned praise in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina as 75,000 refugees flooded into Arkansas. In January of 2007, Huckabee officially declared his intentions to run for President of the United States. Ironically, one major downfall of this campaign was the lack of early evangelical support he garnered. Most evangelicals seemed to think along the lines that Huckabee was not a serious candidate and was unelectable. Despite his exceptional debate skills, and a few victories in key states, Huckabee eventually lost the GOP nomination. To be sure, Huckabee fought to the bitter end of his campaign. Everywhere he turned he came up against advisors, opponents, and even President Bush advising him to throw in the towel. I admire his drive to fight until he was defeated instead of simply quitting and handing the nomination to John McCain. Huckabee did not run again in 2012, citing “All the factors say go, but my heart says no.” Instead he focused on his popular FOX News TV show, his radio shows, and nationwide speaking engagements. He and Janet built a beachside home in Florida where they enjoy spending time together and with their three children and five grandchildren. Huckabee split his time between his new home and the TV studio in New York until January 2015, when he announced that he was leaving his FOX News show to explore the possibility of running for president again. In May of 2015, Huckabee returned to his hometown of Hope, AR, to formally announce his intentions to enter the presidential race. He hit the ground running and launched an aggressive social media campaign to rally the troops. Time will tell what will come of this campaign.

Huckabee: A Remarkable Man from Hope, Arkansas By Amazon Customer I particularly appreciated the review by Kyle Robertson, because it was written by a friend of the Huckabee family, who can verify the accuracy of the biography and even add some interesting insights. Mike Huckabee is a far more remarkable man than you might think from what is presented through the news and popular media. Part of the reason he is often passed by is because of the humble attitude that Mike learned while growing up in a lower middle class family within a close, loving immediate family. His personality and upbringing make him more willing than most politicians to share the glory with others and to listen attentively even to those with very different beliefs and goals in government. He is loyal and honest, because he was taught to be that way as a boy. This biography gives much insight into how his faith and upbringing in the town of Hope, Arkansas, shaped the polite, hard-working and kind man we see today--an unusual example in the often cunning and crafty world of politics. I learned that Mike Huckabee was truly remarkable, even as a youth, and how his interest in politics was honed at Boy's State, where he was elected "governor" while running for the office almost as an afterthought. I learned to appreciate the way that his faith in Jesus Christ shaped and formed the direction of his life, as he detoured from what might have been an early political career into a calling into the pastorate and into Christian broadcasting and the rising evangelical movement of the seventies and eighties. I know Gov. Mike Huckabee as an outstanding man of great principle and character in a political world that is often slick and self-serving. But behind the man is the boy who seemed to accomplish everything "at the age of..." a number few can match. By the age of 20, he had already had a broadcasting career for eight years, graduated from Ouchita Baptist College three semesters early with a magna cum laude, and married his high school sweetheart, Janet McCain. His ability to debate is as good as anyone's. His ability to inspire crowds to enjoy the goodness of serving and loving this country and working with hope to make it better is unmatched. He contrasts, as shown in this biography, as a leader with a heart to serve others, and not the common conception of the attention-hungry politician who is in the race to elevate or enrich him or herself. I particularly like the style of Scott Lamb's writing and the fact that it is evident that he spent many hours researching the information, interviewing the main subject of the book--Gov. Mike Huckabee--as well as friends and other associates, to get an accurate picture of who this man is, how he got to where he is, and why he has perhaps the best ability of any of the candidates in the 2016 race to actually govern. This conclusion is based on his outstanding record of accomplishment outlined in the book, and based even more on his gentle but firm character, belief system, and strong intellect. Any who suppose that because Mike Huckabee came from the hill country of Arkansas that he would be a little less up to date on the world and its problems, or a little unequipped to be President are surely mistaken. As one reads the biography, one sees a most unusual man, equipped for political service, and we could even say, one who would probably make one of the most outstanding Presidents this nation has known. Yes, his honesty and hesitancy to ask people for money hurts the bottom line in running his campaign. But the fact that he refuses to go against his conscience for the sake of winning makes me respect this man all the more. This authorized biography deserves to be read by every voter in America, for it shines the light on the capabilities and preparation of a most outstanding man from Hope, Arkansas, who could again step into the office once vacated by Gov. and then President Bill Clinton. And Huckabee has all the qualities and the hard-work ethic to become a beloved President and statesman like Ronald Reagan, who would again bring back America's confidence, its jobs, and its respect in the world. And who would make us proud again to be called Americans.

By Macon the Bacon An enjoyable and easy read that helps us understand some of the factors and experiences that helped shape one of the most refreshing politicians of our day. Even those who disagree with Mike Huckabee on particular issues have appreciated his sincerity, integrity, intelligence, and winsome approach to communication and practical implementation. While painting a biographical portrait of words and stories about the man, this volume does an admirable job of also providing those background brush-strokes, colorful and interesting flourishes that intersect with the wider historical and cultural setting. The timing of this release tips us off as to one of its purposes, namely, to sketch out the background, character, and job performance of a current Presidential candidate. However, by no means is it a propaganda piece directly advocating Huckabee's current campaign. Instead, what we find is a sympathetic portrait of a man who may simply be too honest, too un-beholden to special interest powers, and too committed to the American people to win in a corrupt system. But the question is asked and allowed to linger. Is it? Is he? We've heard the rhetoric before about being a uniter and working within a bi-partisan context for the good of our nation. But have we actually seen it? Huckabee's story shows that such can be accomplished......at least at a state level. Is Washington (and both sides of the aisle) too toxic for an honest patriot to work for the good of the whole country? I surely hope not. I've learned so much about Mike Huckabee through this biography, and it has given me a pinch of hope for American politics.

Bill Schenck is “one of the best-known practitioners of the western pop-art movement―which appeared in the 1960s hard on the heels of American pop's leading lights like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein," according to Southwest Art magazine. "Schenck in the 21st Century" is a comprehensive catalog raisonne and biography covering Schenck's paintings, photographs, serigraphs, and the other kinds of trouble he's been in since the turn of the millennium. Written by noted art historian, Amy Abrams, this is the most authoritative source on Schenck's current work and philosophy of life, art, and the way it ought to be. Schenck’s work can be found in numerous major collections throughout the world, including the Smithsonian Institution, Denver Art Museum, The Autry Museum of Western Heritage, Booth Western Art Museum, Tucson Museum of Art, and many more. Schenck's work has been the subject of four museum retrospectives, including The West as It Never Was, at the Albrecht Kemper Museum of Art. Schenck is a World Champion Ranch Sorting winner and the proprietor of the Double Standard Ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico, his home for the past two decades. "The painter Bill Schenck has been challenging the western myth for four decades through his paintings, prints, and photography. His works possess a deep understanding of design and a sophisticated sense of color that has only heightened in recent years with his brazenly bold canvases." ―Thomas Brent Smith – Director, Petrie Institute of Western American Art, Denver Art Museum

Review “What has remained constant throughout Schenck’s career is his individuality in dealing with the subject matter of the west. Using the artistic formula of classic western film direction and the photographically reliant systems of contemporary art, he has bridged two genres that resonate with the American experience. Schenck melds the real with the imagined, autobiography with fantasy.” ―Julie Sasse, Chief Curator and Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Tucson Museum of Art

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful Portrait of a larger than life talent By Dede S. Schmitt Without being pedantic, this wonderful book manages to provide a fascinating and comprehensive biographical overview of the life and works of Billy Schenck, while placing him clearly in historical, social perspective of art trends in the last 40-50 years. This is no mean feat as Schenck is a protean, serious living artist who continuously explores our American psyche and culture as he dances back and forth over the line separating iconic imagery, media, kitsch, satire, truth, genius, and originality. Visibly influenced by most of modern art's developments, Schenck's explorations and contributions of the American Southwest are ably captured and set in context by the author, Amy Abrams. So much of art writing is pompous, jargon-laden, and self-important - which this book isn't; it strikes me as a great match between author and subject.
