He is a prodigy who underwent many struggles-from being exploited to becoming a criminal genius to coming out clean. Dying in Indian Country is the true story of a father who, recognizing how current tribal and federal government policies were destroying his family, embarked on a bold journey of change. The names of children who are perishing daily within Indian Country never make it into the media. Abuse is rampant on reservations because the US government system allows exploitation to go on unchecked and without repercussion. Yet genuine hope is available! While multitudes of tribal members are dying from alcoholism, drug abuse, suicide, and violence, personal responsibility and non-governmental solutions can bring real change to Native Americans. Author Lisa Morris reveals the anguishing reality of how the current reservation system played out in of her own family. After a life-changing experience, her husband, Roland, a member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe, rejected the mantle of victimhood and blame, became personally accountable, and led their family in a new direction. The greater story within her story is one of spiritual transformation and healing. Readers will gain a deep understanding of the plight of Americans living throughout Indian Country, while experiencing one family’s real-life journey away from decades of trauma, toward hope and victory in Jesus Christ.

Dying in Indian Country: Revised Edition, by Elizabeth Morris

Review · "Whether you are interested in federal Indian policy, social justice, or a good love story, you will find this book gripping." Congressman Kevin Cramer, North Dakota.· "...This very readable book is Lisa Morris's brutally honest telling of her family's life and experiences on reservations, including direct personal experience with the Indian Child Welfare Act, and tribal government jurisdiction over her husband and children..." Rick Jore, Former Montana Representative, House District 73.· "Roland truly has encouraged many people...the last trip to D.C. was a testimony to God's faithfulness." Rev. Robert Guthrie, B.Th. M.A. - Professor, Vanguard College, AB.· "'Dying in Indian Country' is a compassionate and honest portrayal...I highly recommend it to you!" Reed Elley, former Member of Parliament, Canada; Chief Critic for Indian Affairs in 2000; Baptist Pastor, father of four native and metis children.· "He was a magnificent warrior who put himself on the line for the good of all.... I can think of no-one at this time in this dark period of Indian history who is able to speak as Roland has." Arlene, tribal member.· "...hope emerging from despair... This is a story about an amazing life journey." Darrel Smith. Writer, Rancher, South Dakota.· "...truly gripping, with a good pace."  Dr. William B. Allen, - Emeritus Professor, Political Science, MSU and former Chair of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights (1989).

Review "In deeply personal fashion, Lisa Morris takes you inside her family to illustrate the plight of native people. Lisa and Roland’s story is like too many families’ stories in Indian country. She masterfully weaves individual accounts of addiction, abuse, and permanent dependency, as part of the larger history of widespread corruption among tribal leaders, while exposing serious flaws in national policy. Morris dares say what many people believe but lack the fortitude to risk reputation, and even life, to tell the truth about. Dying in Indian Country serves as testimony to the harm caused by apathy, and as a call for public servants willing to lead where most fear to go. Whether you are interested in federal Indian policy, social justice, or a good love story, you will find this book gripping. It will take you on an emotional roller-coaster ride that runs from Minnesota to Montana to Washington DC. One need not agree with every political conclusion of the author to admire her courage for exposing obvious shortcomings in national and tribal policies that serve more to keep people down than lift them up. I encourage you to read this book with an open mind, challenge its conclusions if you like, and search your heart and mind for how you will respond to Dying in Indian Country. -Congressman Kevin Cramer, North Dakota, At Large "Truly gripping, with good pace. The emergence of the 'public' of political significance, as opposed to the autobiography, is gradual but effective. -W. B. Allen, Dean Emeritus, James Madison College; Emeritus Professor of Political Science, Michigan State University; former Chair of the US Commission on Civil Rights (1989) "Lisa Morris pours out her heart in Dying in Indian Country, as she chronicles the life of just one family caught in the tragic web of history. Having worked with native people in Canada and having three native children in our family, I know that what she writes is all too true and commonplace. I commend her book to you and pray that somehow through the telling of this story, you might be moved to help remedy this terrible scandal, which shames both our nations. Morris’s book is a compassionate and honest portrayal of one couple’s journey through hardship and pain, sorrow, and triumph. Lisa Morris has her feet in both worlds, native and non native; because of that, she has unique insights. The whole issue she addresses in the book, the caring for native children has become so politicized, it hardly seems that much bureaucracy does is in the best interest of the child. Her strong faith in God comes through loud and clear as the one constant, sustaining factor. She has dedicated her life to make the lot of native children better. I highly recommend it."  -Reed Elley Former member of the parliament, Vancouver Island, British Columbia; former Chief Critic for Indian Affairs and Northern Development, Official Opposition, Canada; Baptist pastor, and father of four native and Metis children "Everyone should read this. I’ve had personal experience with a Native American tribe, and sadly I see why what happened, happened to me and my family. It was wrong. What is being done to Native American people, by their own government as well as by our government, is wrong too, and it’s not helping or making amends for the past. People don’t believe or know what is really going on. Today, the average person only sees reservations with casinos. There is so much more happening. We can be a voice, and this book is a great way to start. Thank you, Lisa Morris, for putting your heart on the line to share your family’s story." -Jodi A. "As a third-generation reservation resident, I’m often asked why I am concerned about Indian reservations. Lisa Morris provides the clearest explanation available to date. Short of living there, reading this book will give you the best feel you’re likely to find for what it’s like to live on a modern American Indian reservation. At times, you will feel confused, discouraged, hopeless, depressed, and angry. Welcome to the rez. Many people have their aspirations destroyed here. Too many have their lives and health damaged. More than a few lives end prematurely here. What is exciting about this book is that it doesn’t end there. Lisa and her family find hope emerging from despair. They are finding solutions, both for their own lives and for those around them. This is a story about an amazing life journey. Read it and weep. Read it and rejoice." -Darrel Smith, writer; rancher, South Dakota "Those of us who have lived our lives among American Indians within the reservation system have seen firsthand the disastrous consequences of socialism and paternalism perpetrated on Indian tribes by the federal government. This very readable book is Lisa Morris’s brutally honest telling of her family’s life and experience on reservations, including direct personal experience with the Indian Child Welfare Act, and tribal government jurisdiction over her husband and children―even though they have no vote in that government. The reader who is not hopelessly entrenched in political correctness and the politics of guilt and pity will find this book a tremendous resource and compelling argument for drastic change to federal Indian policy, away from paternalism to freedom and dignity for the individual Indian citizen." -Rick Jore, former Montana representative, House District 73 "The ending had me putting the book down and saying, 'Wow!'” -Ann Ubelis, radio talk show host, South Carolina

From the Inside Flap "In deeply personal fashion, Lisa Morris takes you inside her family to illustrate the plight of Native people. Lisa and Roland's story is like too many families' stories in Indian Country. She masterfully weaves individual accounts of addiction, abuse and permanent dependency as part of the larger history of wide spread corruption among Tribal Leaders while exposing serious flaws in national policy.Morris dares say what many people believe but lack the fortitude to risk reputation and even life to tell the truth about. By TundraBee A paid ad kept showing up in my Facebook newsfeed for this book -ostensibly about life on the Rez and in Indian Country. So, I bought it and commenced reading. Wow. It claims to be about my home rez. I do not know this family about whom the author claims to speak. I came back to Amazon to check it out. Lo and behold, this is a "revised" edition of a previous edition authored by "Beth Ward" who must have taken Carrie Underwood's "I don't even know my last name" song to heart. Maybe it's Hallelujah Michele Bachmann writing under a pen name.Yes, there are problems here on the rez - but not as widespread as whoever the heck the author(s?) are would have the reader believe in order to spew anti-native propaganda, venom, lies and BS so as to abrogate all sacred Treaty Rights. See, e.g. http://nativeamericannetroots.net/diary/954Skip this book. Read Rez Life instead.Miigwitch.

By Marilyn Hudson This book identifies many of the social ills which plague Indian reservations today such as alcoholism, drug addiction, child neglect, etc. Until tribal governments stabilize at some point in the future to deal with this issues, Dying in Indian Country will have many more chapters to be written.

By Mexicrow The author advocates doing away with reservations and programs that help Native Americans. This is not something I can agree with. These rights are legally binding agreements with the US government. Also it is written from a non-native, white privilege perspective. The more I read that angrier I became. Instead of trying to change things on a reservation not home to her spouse, why not do it on his home reservation. I lived for 40 years on an Indian Reservation in Montana also, there is abuse by tribal governments on all reservations, just as there is abuse in all areas of government in this country. I am afraid I just could not past the whining tone, which appear to be somewhat vindictive and related to her husband's years of active alcoholism. From that to extreme religious fundamentalism.... it was too much.

Excerpt from Last Days of Marie Antoinette: An Historical SketchI propose writing an account of those last seventy-six days of a life once so bright, now brought to the lowest depth of moral and physical suffering. The Conciergerie is one of the most curious and interesting monuments of ancient Paris. A fortress in the days of Eude, Count of Paris, who here defied the Normans, it was enlarged by Robert the Pious, and from his time to that of Charles the Wise was the principal dwelling-place of the French kings. Later occupied by the Parliament, it became transformed into a State prison, although a portion of the building was still reserved for the use of the Parliament, the State Exchequer, and other judiciary bodies.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 4 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Marie-Antoinette did *not* say the line about the cake By Sjoerd Bakker Marie-Antoinette did *not* say the line about the cake... it was Maria Theresa, wife of Sun King Louis XIV who's supposed to have said something like: "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche". Furthermore, correspondence with her relatives indicates that Marie-Antoinette was not at all the frivolous, "wicked" queen as many picture her to be. On the contrary... she probably was rather on the prudish side, and noone has even found any proof supporting an affair with Fersen.

PDF Ebook One Flew over the Banyan Tree, by Alan Jansen

This delightful book follows the adventures of a young boy's memorable stay at his cantankerous Grandmothers house after his father loses a top job and abandons his young family. Amusing chapters takes the reader through a remarkable panorama of adventures featuring the unique palavers and adventures of the “Breakfast- eaters” at an illegal shanty restaurant (which for want of a signboard is dubbed the “Nameless”), the ruminations of a tree-climbing canine philosopher who despairs of the human race, a dastardly election campaign, an elixir for becoming young again, headless ghosts, dubious scholars at a private school, and plenty more lovable incidents and adventures.

The book paints a portrait of life in a specific district of a fictional former British colony in the early sixties.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I enjoyed Rohan! By Melissa Martin's Reading List Blog I thought this book was relatively funny. I thought the author did a great job with the writing even though some of the stuff I didn't quite get but I think that's just because I'm not used to some of the lingo in other languages. There are a lot of funny scenes in the book and some that were like oh no, are we talking about this! lol, the one I'm most thinking of is the dogs being stuck together and I think everyone knows what I'm talking about. There was a bit of a section on this as well. There were just other random things too. I can just picture the family going on about the different things.--->EXCERPT One Flew over the Banyan Tree, by Alan Jansen

Most people became interested in the State of Arizona v. Jodi Arias January 2, 2013, when opening statements were delivered. Over time that interest became a media sensation and a world-wide phenomenon. However, as her attorney I know that what you saw at trial is only part of the story. Have you ever wondered what happened before the trial began, what it was like to deal with Ms. Arias when the cameras were not rolling? In this book I detail for the reader what happened before the case began, what happened before the cameras were on. I detail the things that you do not know, things that will describe my reality, the reality that I was "Trapped with Ms. Arias."

Disappointed with some things...BUT By ARIEL First let me say I am happy Mr Nurmi was able to use his book as a form of therapeutic catharsis. With a client like Jodi Arias, he's entitled to all the catharsis in the world! But ...I was also disappointed. I really wanted redemption for Kirk too. But people tend to want people to be really honest, with everything, before absolving. And I'm NOT talking areas of Attorney Client privilege . I was disappointed that he largely stuck to the same story that failed during the trial. And I'm not talking about Arias' testimony, I'm talking solely about Nurmis argument and views he claims he had on what the evidence did or didn't tell him.Mr Nurmi believes that HE saved Jodis life. I get it. that's what he'd really like to believe. but given the 11-1 in favor of death, and what those of us know about the Jodi support website having "all the jurors names minutes after the verdict was announced", I tend to believe Jodis illegal actions in tampering with a juror via her supporters had more to do with it than any trial strategy employed by her lawyer. One thing I found amusing in book is when Kirk argues: "If you disagree with me" or "If you think I am wrong, if you can momentarily separate your hatred for Ms Arias for a minute...you will see I am right". Um. Come now Mr. Nurmi. The hubris doesn't suit you.Your 'take' was in fact often highly misleading or at best ...gullible. But again, I get it, you had to stand by the really ugly parts of your argument. But rest assured. The 'ugly parts' were not 'all Jodi. But I don't hold that against you. In the end, I'm glad you argued the way you did. Because Arias cannot say her lawyer didn't fight strong enough with her story. And you fought really hard for her. I don't think there's an appeals judge anywhere that wouldn't believe that. Just don't expect all of "us" to believe what you write as your reasoning for why you believed this or that. I believe you believed you could 'argue' something with a certain reasoning, but I don't believe in light of all the other evidence, that many of the things you said in your book was your true and honest opinion of certain pieces of evidence. We know you had access to the same things that Beth Karas released on her website that the state did not present in court. And because we know this, we know you know, that Jodis prosecution could have been much MUCH MUCH worse. You talk about all her jail phone calls. But there's so much more in her journals and texts that proved that Jodi was stalking Travis Alexander. Maybe women pick up on what she was doing much better than men. Whether you pretend to yourself that men can't be victims of emotional and psychosocial abuse or not- (and that abuse is part of the reasoning for why he continued to have sex with Jodi)- or that a guy cannot be conflicted and have opposing feelings about someone- "facts are stubborn things". And the facts are that Jodi is a very frightening individual. Travis was no saint but he was impressionable, very vulnerable and had no idea that messing around with someone like Jodi Arias was like playing with a ticking time bomb.Oh and by the way, can you explain why you believe it had to have been Travis that initiated the "second sex" on June 4? I get it helps the whole argument you have, but if you read all the texts you know Jodi Arias herself was the one in the weeks and last couple months leading up to his death - that was the one initiating sex talk and trying to get him in bed. And we know on several occasions it was Travis who rejected HER come ons. Telling HER to go to sleep. That she was not welcome in his bed. If you want redemption - don't seek to continually make him out to be someone using her only for sex and portraying him as an insatiable sex monster when you know that's simply not what the "evidence" shows.Or do you simply think that if there's a lot of sex going on that that means it HAS to be the guy initiating it? Personally I think this is a perfect example of you not being honest with the readers. I personally think in actuality you were surprised when the state failed to really rebut this kind of argument you made. I recall you specifically asking a question to Demarte about whether she doubted the veracity and intensity of their sexual relationship. I think you asked it because you were worried that a juror or two might have connected the fact that this relationship might NOT have been as frequent as your client testified it was. Or, that it was JA ...that was... in the end of his life the one desperately using sex as a tool of power over him.Aside from my disappointment for the above reasons, I also found your stories about Jodi Arias herself informative and confirming. I do enjoy the way you write. I just hope your next two books are written with a little more respect toward your audience. We know a LOT more about this trial, and the law than I believe you realize. And pretending as if we didn't watch the whole trial, or don't know better -when it comes to certain pieces of evidence, is more than a tad insulting.

Worth reading but not without its problems By CSPaula I appreciate that this book was written because we should study dangerous people but its not without its problems. First, the idea that Jodi Arias was sexually abused is ludicrous. The author repeats over and over that "facts are stubborn things" yet has absolutely no facts (and even says so) to support the idea of her sexual abuse. Having represented criminals who sexually abuse people does not make one qualified to diagnose sexual abuse. Sexual abuse survivors do not act the way Arias does and for many people it affects them not at all. There are other explanations for her behavior, not of which involve sexual abuse. Second, as many others have noted, the book is badly in need of an editor. Grammar errors and the like take away from the book. There are also times when the author trashes the victim. Yes, he more or less apologizes for it but it still happens and it seems unfair and without a strong basis of facts. Finally, I think all new information about the case could have fit into one book rather than three but I guess that ultimately remains to be seen.

I believe she always got her way with her parents and learned the fine arts of manipulation early By Lauri Ridley The book was interesting but I totally disagree on a few points. I don't believe the murderer was ever sexually abused. That is just what makes sense to Nurmi. I believe she always got her way with her parents and learned the fine arts of manipulation early. Let's face it when she didn't get her way all heck broke loose as Nurmi tells us. I don't agree that this was not premeditated. I believe she made sure the roommates were gone and gave him just one more chance or made sure that her pleasures were his last. Facts are a stubborn thing aren't they? The murder planned on trashing Travis if she did not get her deal and if Nurmi didn't play ball she would destroy him. Pattern going to any lengths to get what she wanted. So that sex tape was intentional and he probably thought what is wrong with her that she lets me get away with this but more important that fight about her betrayal could have been all around that tape. That is speculation but what makes sense to me.Finally the book confirmed for me that she is a manipulative self serving dangerous person. I was not surprised to read the hatred she used towards her Mom and then to see her fry about her Mom in an interview. She is a masterful liar that has lied for way too long and been believed. But her lies are all she has left and a few delusional supporters. Go bye Ms. Arias. You reminded us all that true evil does indeed exist.

I have been looking for a accurate guide that helps me to build a decent body shape in less time, and I came across this book that is a life saver for me. There are so many exercises, drills mentioned this book and one should be wise in choosing the excercise that fits him. I'm following this book from a week, and I have to say this has impressed me a lot.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. You are never to old to need a coach! By ncalphaxi88 I am the mom of tennis player who is in her senior year at a university in North Carolina. Senior years are always filled with trials and tribulations and sometimes it must feel that they are on the loosing end of a 0-6 0-5 match. There seams to be more calls home in their senior year than there was in the freshman year. Between calls home this week, I found this book, downloaded it and thought I would pick it up this weekend. This morning I picked it up and never put it down! The story line sucked me in like a tornado and I couldn't put it down until I was done. Not only did I learn more about the game of tennis but I had to laugh when some of the 9 life lessons where ones my daughter and I discussed this week. This book is not just for tennis players, college athletes, or seniors about to graduate, because truth be told, I needed to hear some of the same lessons. I stress to my children all the time chapters 4 and 5. I needed chapters 6 and 7. Good job Coach!

Well 2 hours later I am reading the last page and thinking wow what a story. I compare it to a nurse distracting a child with a toy or lolipop while the doctor gives him a shot. David has woven a tale that draws the reader in (even a non tennis player like me) so well that you don't realize that he is teaching you something too. "One push. Never stop." was haunting for me. I knew from David's first novel that he was a wonderful storyteller, but this practical use of those skills was a great surprise. Do yourself a favor and give this book a try...I'll wager that you won't be able to put it down either.

All the poems are truly heart touching, and I am not just saying this because she is my wife. I personally recall all the nights she would be up writing these poems, and readng them to me. And now to see them in print is truly wonderful. Janet has a true gift for writing, it is her passion. She has a way of saying from the heart what others are feeling deep down inside. I know when you read her poems you will find that special one that will touch your heart, and you will wonder how she knew what you were feeling and could say it so well. I know I have !

This is the story of one man's 36 year long journey through the California prison system, told through the defining lens of how Christmas is celebrated. It is a story of how the decades-long crackdown on prisoners' rights resulted in the virtual cancellation of the holiday, and of how prisoners banded together to save Christmas inside. It is, ultimately, a story of the power of hope and redemption triumphing over punishment for the sake of inflicting pain. Mass incarceration, the prison-industrial complex, the War on Crime, all of these terms are abstractions to those not directly involved in the prison system. Through this story, around the timeless theme of Christmas, in its Christian and secular aspects, the impact of the unprecedented expansion of imprisonment and the increasingly harsh conditions of American prisons is brought into the light of deeper understanding. If you want to know the truth of prison as its practiced in this country, read this story. If you want to feel what its like to have to fight to celebrate Christmas, read this story. If you simply want to enjoy a resonant piece of holiday writing, read this story. But, regardless of your reasons, you must read this story.

But if you're looking for inspiration or a reason to be thankful for what you have in life then I recommend this piece By Karl Lowa A description of one mans experiences of Christmas in various California prisons over the last 36 years. It's stark, bleak, moving, and inspirational. The human spirit endures despite the dehumanization of the prison system. You'll have to excuse the cliche; I'm no writer. But if you're looking for inspiration or a reason to be thankful for what you have in life then I recommend this piece. Sing it loud as hell this year Ken!

Beautiful, heartfelt and deeply moving By Tenzinsan Ken Hartman has been able to capture the feelings and experience of prison in a way few others have done. I am honored and privileged to know him and he is so amazing. His style of writing is poetic and engaging. The reader can't help but be deeply touched by Ken's account of his experience in prison. I couldn't stop crying while reading it, resonating on a very deep level. The hope is that in reading this book, more people will be informed about the horrors in prison and the unconscionable way prisoners are treated enough to advocate for a change in legislation. That is my deepest hope.

It moved me so much that I reached out to Ken, author, to thank him for sharing his story. It is a rare thing indeed that a piece strikes you so deeply that you have to rest your eyes in the void just to ingest all the emotion surging through you.Thank you, Ken, for sharing such a wonderful piece of literature... and of your life. This is something everyone should read. And especially around the holiday season.

When two sisters are exiled from their native land, they embark on a national epic into their mythological world of Ancient Canada. Using Lavender’s unique ability to see life and death, she and Marigold attempt to stay within the narrow margins of survival. Their journey sweeps through Svalbard, Jan Mayen Island, Thule (Greenland), and the Siberian peninsula. Ancient Canada is told by the various characters and creatures encountered along the way. Each revolving narrator shares their personal background, beliefs, and wisdom as they see fit. The nineteen chapters of the novel not only bring you the sisters’ story, but those of Prince Oslo of Svalbard, an orphan boy, a fugitive bog man, and a tremendous bird-warrior, among others. Ancient Canada is a mythological world for a Western nation without its Odyssey, Beowulf, or Canterbury Tales. It may be unlike anything you’ve read in a thousand years.

Ancient Canada, by Clinton Festa

About the Author Clinton Festa began his writing career as a ‘Lunatic,’ writing for the campus humor magazine the Cornell Lunatic. Since his undergraduate days, he has also been a cartoonist, a circulation editor, and written numerous online humor articles. On the serious side, Clinton has authored many technical courses to promote aviation safety. As a pilot with over 3,500 flight hours, his seminars have earned him the FAA’s ‘Representative of the Year’ award in 2010 for the Greensboro, North Carolina district. Clinton began writing his first novel, Ancient Canada, while working as both a corporate pilot and the chief pilot for an air cargo company. He drew on various sources, from ancient literature to conversations with his wife. The novel best classifies as fantasy fiction, specifically an epic drama, with a revolving narrator much like Canterbury Tales. But Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was Ancient Canada. Much like the characters’ journey through their known world, Clinton wrote his tale of mythology over several years as his aviation career took him to various states and Canadian provinces.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Must-Read Mythological Tale! By A Very Merry Shakespeare Philosophy, wisdom, history - fantasy, paranormal, entertainment - these are two groups of words that are never put together when speaking about the literary world. Novels are separated by invisible barriers, allowing them to fall expertly into the categories of romance, suspense, YA, etc. Although there have been crossovers, where a romance is set in the paranormal world, or the historical figure comes to present day to have a few laughs, literary genres are still very individualized. However, when Ancient Canada came along, a world was opened up where the fantastical, mystical, paranormal, dramatic, historical, and entertaining all came together in a perfect blend by the hand of author, Clinton Festa. There comes a time in every reviewer's life when they come up against a book that is so large - not in pages, mind you, but in the scope and depth of the actual story - that the reviewer finds themselves on a true journey, constantly riveted and wondering what the next chapter will bring. This amazing novel spoke to me on so many levels that to do a `write-up' in `so many words or less' is an impossibility. But this novel is so grand and so interesting, that I am desperate to do my best.In the simplest form...Lavender and Marigold are sisters who have no idea upon birth that they are about to take a journey that will lead them to the most amazing locations, meet the most fantastical creatures, and walk a path that will eventually bring them back to square one. In essence, their lives come full circle, with almost every chapter being told from another character's viewpoint that they meet along the way.Polaris is the leader of the people of Canada and its capital of York. He is the main villain in this story, which begins with a woman by the name of Heather who is traveling to see her beloved husband, Simon. Heather is the mother of Marigold, her first daughter who has remained at home while she takes her journey to Fort Alert. Heather is heavily pregnant with her second daughter and spends most of her time during her travels with her precious tollimore, an animal who takes care of her along the way. Heather first meets up with a green-eyed peddler who is more than happy to trade Heather her animals for supplies that Heather desperately needs in order to continue. The tollimore, however, will not be separated from Heather, and she and the peddler soon come to believe that this creature will always be there to `steer' Heather away from death.Upon arrival at the Fort to see her beloved husband, Heather gives birth to a child with lavender eyes and a power that no one else will ever understand. Unfortunately, her husband perishes, and Heather is returned to York so she can be tried for a crime. Heather avoids an executable charge and returns home with Lavender in her arms and a broken heart. As this child grows, it is soon seen by her family that she has a gift; Lavender can actually see the glow of a creature or a human and can tell if life or death is going to occur. (She first proves this skill when the tollimore is about to be killed by her grandfather, but she sees the bright red energy of the three babies in its stomach.)As time moves forward, Lavender and Marigold open up a business of sorts, called The Mystic Garden - a place where people can come so that Lavender can address their needs. Through a very interesting set of circumstances, the girls are placed into exile and ordered to leave York and never return. Thus, the duo travels the world compiling a book on The Aliments of Life and Death, regarding poisonous materials, cures, and all kinds of things that the world should know for their basic survival. From a stone beast named Brother Lichen to an orphan boy named Sam; from a commandant in the Canadian military whose story of a wooden sword is beyond fascinating, to a Prince who must find his bride - chapter after chapter tells the stories of each and every encounter that various characters have with these two amazing women. This author has done an extraordinary job of putting together a story that is impossible to even guess at the conclusion. Lessons are taught - from what heroism really means, to the treatment of others less fortunate, to the power of the heart, to the love of two sisters who try desperately to make things right in a world full of wrongs. The discoveries of new places, artifacts, people, poisons - it never ends. This book is almost a museum of curiosities where each page is something new and undiscovered by the reading public. A stunning book with charm, passion, thrills, characters that are truly fantastical and extraordinary, to say the least, and an all-out adventure that you won't soon forget!

Friedman Clinton Festa writes about his novel "The mythological world of Ancient Canada [...] may be unlike anything you've read in 1,000 years. Two sisters, Lavender and Marigold, are exiled into an epic journey of their alternate Arctic Circle. Lavender has the unique ability to see life and death in all its forms. Marigold has no unique gift, just the ability to support her sister at the right time and tell a joke at the wrong one."I have read several novels dealing with "Alternate History". This is not an easy genre to tackle, as the writer must have both a knowledge of the "real" location as well as a vivid imagination of the "Alternate" location, and the impressive writing skills to pull this knowledge all together. Happily, Clinton Festa has this ability in abundance and ANCIENT CANADA is a brilliant and most unique novel. The reader is literaly transported by the superb phrasiology and characterizations in this book to a land full of magic, myths and adventure. Mr. Festa's knowledge of Canada, and his ability to utilize what is common knowledge...the Arctic Circle ect..and transform this into an incredible, yet completely believable alternative is a teatament to a very promising writer. The two main protagonists, Lavender and Marigold are so finely word-sculpted by Clinton Festa that the reader is able to feel an attachment to each. This is no easy task in a novel of this genre.Lavender is gifted with an innate ability to truly see life and the world (again so finely created by Mr. Festa)around her in a way most of us can only hope for. Her sister, Marigold does well in the pivotal role of support for her most complex of sisters. There are so many twists and turns, tales and myths in ANCIENT CANADA, that the each page is chock full of tasty nuggets. As the sisters embark on a quest which brings them in contact with some very animated characters, to say the least, Mr Festa expertly creates a sense of tension and offsets it with a fine wit at just the right time (Though Marigold might dissagree!)This is a truly a book for those who like their stories unique and their time very well spent!AN JAMES MASON COMMUNITY BOOK CLUB MUST READRICK FRIEDMANFOUNDERTHE JAMES MASON COMMUNITY BOOK CLUB

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Ancient Alternative History By D. Burnworth Ancient Canada. Before we begin, I must give props to Mr. Festa for originality. Ancient Greece. Ancient Rome. Ancient Egypt. All of those are superb places, histories, titles and are chock full of possibilities. Ancient Canada stands alone because it is relatively unknown. It should not be unknown. Canada is a sleeping giant, perched above the noise of America and far from the rallies and cries of the rest of the world. It is both beautiful and inhospitable. Canada's ties to Russia and the Artic make it a very dangerous yet mysterious place. This is all before we dive into Festa's alternate history. For that, I applaud the author.Ancient Canada lets us into the world of two sisters, Lavender and Marigold. Lavender is born with remarkable, fantastical gifts while her sister's are more subdued. The writing is good in that you don't notice it. The story tells itself, and the characters are intriguing, likable, and memorable. I found myself comparing the girls to the March sisters. Little women is one of my all-time favorite books. Marigold is a writer, and the girls set out on a whirl-wind adventure as Lavender uses her special gifts of both life and death. Marigold's role isn't quite so glamorous, but she is funny and fascinating, and I could not help but be reminded of Jo March.Being a history buff and a literal geek has its moments, and reading Ancient Canada made a great impression upon me as a completely encompassing novel of historical, mythological, fantasy and literal fiction. Smart is always a fun read, this was smart as well as poignant and overall entertaining. It even made me want to read a little bit about Canada, our lovely neighbors to the north.
