On December 28, 1958, the New York Giants and Baltimore Colts met under the lights of Yankee Stadium for that season's NFL Championship game. Football, growing in popularity amid America's post-war economic boom, was still greatly over-shadowed by the country's favored pastime - baseball - but the 1958 championship proved to be the turning point for pro football.

On the field and roaming the sidelines were 17 future Hall of Famers, including Colts stars Johnny Unitas, Raymond Berry, and Gino Marchetti, and Giants greats Frank Gifford, Sam Huff, and assistant coaches Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry.

Played on a freezing Sunday evening in front of 64,000 fans and an estimated 45 million television viewers around the country - at that time the largest crowd to have ever watched a football game - the championship would become the first sudden-death contest in NFL history. With two minutes left in regulation, Baltimore had possession deep in its own territory, and the ball in the hands of the still unproven quarterback Johnny Unitas.

The Best Game Ever is a brilliant portrait of how a single game changed the history of American sports. Published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the championship, it is destined to be a sports classic.

The Best Game Ever is his best book ever. He makes the 1958 NFL title game come alive. I have memories as a high school senior of watching this game on television. The game's black-and-white starkness is imbedded in my memory. Mr. Bowden makes this memory come alive in all its vivid character. His lively style is more that of an analytical journalist than an academic historian, and he offers insights that I have not read elsewhere. The photos of this cold-weather game offered in the book made me want to bundle up in spite of the fact that it is 90 degrees in San Antonio (my home) today. Every football fan should be grateful for this book.

That's the date the Baltimore Colts defeated the New York Giants in sudden death overtime to win the NFL title as 45 million fans watched on television. It marked the birth of the modern NFL as football began to step out of the shadows of baseball. The match up featured the greatest concentration of football talent for one game as 17 future Hall of Famers were involved. It pitted a team of self-made men and the league's best offense (Colts) versus a team of glamour boys and the best defense (Giants).Author Mark Bowden tells the story of the 1958 championship game through a handful of players and coaches such as Raymond Berry, Weeb Ewbank, Sam Huff, Tom Landry (Giants' defensive coordinator) and Vince Lombardi (Giants' offensive coordinator). Bowden's exceptional study of Berry is the cornerstone of the book.Bowden recounts how Johnny Unitas and Berry teamed up to take the Colts 86 yards in two minutes to tie the game. And, how Unitas engineered the 13-play drive in overtime to secure the thrilling victory. Unitas' greatness and leadership in the game elevated him to the highest echelon of NFL quarterbacks.Interestingly, many of the players didn't realize that the game would continue into sudden death overtime after it was tied in regulation. As a writer, Bowden makes the reader feel like he's in the middle of the game. He makes you wish you had been able to witness this great game. You envy those who did. NFL Commissioner Bert Bell called the Colts-Giants sudden death overtime game, "The greatest day in the history of professional football."While I thoroughly enjoyed the book, it's definitely a lightweight treatment of the subject. The book is 239, easy-to-read pages. When I finished the book, I wanted to read more about the game and its impact. I suspect many other readers will feel the same way.

"Who cares about the Giants and Colts? Well," we'd think, "Raymond Berry played in the 1958 championship game, and he later coached the New England Patriots. Maybe I'll read it."The beauty of Bowden's treatment of the game - of course debatable as to its superlative (American publishing marketing working overtime) - is that it allows the football purist to read all the way through cheering for neither side in particular, but for the game and the sport itself. I wasn't alive when the game was played, and didn't have a rooting interest when I picked up the book. I just wanted a good read on a favored topic, and got just that.

The author manages to move seamlessly from our world, to those she has created. Unlike with so many fantasy books, at no point did I feel that she had taken a step too far. She handles the balance between believability, and outright fantasy, with all the skill of a tightrope Walker. At no point does she topple into the cliché, or the over trodden paths of others. The characters in this book are well formed and completely compelling. Doella, the main character, is a good example of this. I could totally see her in my mind's eye, and I wasn't always sure that I liked what I saw. That's one of the things I liked about this book. Too often characters are black or white. For me, Doella was a kind of gray,as are many people in the real world. Nobody is perfect, least of all, a flawed God. I highly recommend this book to lovers of both fantasy and sci-fi. The rest of you will love it too; I know I did. Five stars.I purchased this book on Smashwords, but I wanted to leave a review here too.

The title of this book is what drew me in and I must say, it is very befitting for the story. I loved it! The Author does a great job of blending fantasy and sci-fi, in my opinion. I enjoyed the way she weaves readers in and out of the different worlds, seamlessly. The plot was fantastic and unique as were the characters. Even those who seemed robotic at times, were likable. The story was very well written and gives the reader a lot to think about... It certainly put a few thoughts in mind. I'd give it (6) Stars if I could. That being said, I really have to give the Author props on originality as well as holding the readers interest. Doella's story was compelling and had my undivided attention from start to finish as the plot neatly unfolded. I can't wait for the next one!

Mortimer (Flawed Gods Series Book One)I'm not even certain in what genre I should put this book. It has elements of Science Fiction and Fantasy with a healthy dose of fantasy. Then it has elements of Romance, but more on the end of explicit sex though I have seen worse. Finally I came to the conclusion that the main character Doella is a female version of a Lothario. It's similar to taking The Memoirs of Jacques Casanova de Seingalt and inserting a female in his place. This is a good read with some interesting ideas and occasionally touching the boundaries of the comfort zone. One problem I had with it is that just as with Casanova I had a great difficulty feeling anything helpful or hopeful for Doella. Well it's not quite true because I did feel for her at the beginning; since she seemed to be mourning the death of Paul. Of course as the story unfolds that compassion is lost quite quickly.Doella is masquerading as a human named Louise Baker. We find that she is really an anthropologist for a race of beings living on Varos. They have been tweaking and accelerating mans development not just on Earth but on Earth of several parallel dimensions. She and her people have bracelets that enhance the power they have to travel through these dimensions. Doella is a hands on anthropologist in the worst sense and she has been going native more than she probably should. To lighten things up we discover that the world of Varos is conducive to promiscuity in the early years of development. Conversely when they marry they marry for life, but they seem to be encouraged to play the field. To this end Doella has been experimenting with love with some of her co-workers and apparently a large number of the subjects of her study. Enough that one character seemed to rightly suggest she couldn't give an accurate number. And it seems that even though she a number of times marvels at the possibility that she might be so beautiful that men would fight over she also somehow seems to have the same attitude as Casanova in that she seems to think she is gods gift to man.She is engaged to Takos but despite efforts, Simune has rebuked her efforts; while she has engaged in a relationship with Carnos. Carnos has been imprisoned by the Varos in the interlamina, which seems to be the area they travel through between worlds and dimensions. Carnos may have been guilty of causing the humans to become more aggressive, possibly causing most of the current strife on the Earth planets. We later find that his confinement is not being handled quite as everyone thinks. When they discover that Carnos might have slipped from his cage Doella begins to wonder if he might be responsible for the deaths of many of her lovers on Earth. I mention all of this because there are some questionable things that occur that made me feel uncomfortable with the character of Doella.Carnos escapes into the dimensions or parallel worlds and lures Doella, because he loves her, and he traps her with him. He takes away her bracelet, which is something that is very important to her as it protects her and gives her the power to go where she wants to go. Somehow she seems alright with this for way too long even though she constantly moans about the loss of the bracelet to herself she doesn't confront Carnos. She does still love him, but this is like kidnapping and with her powers taken away it makes it that much more heinous. Eventually she seems happy to go along with him rather than question his tactics. When they meet Sark a member of a race of Hyclos she has already attempted relationships with several other men and decides to include Sark. In many cases as this progresses she regains and loses her power bracelet. Since it protects her when she has it, the only feelings and concerns I've had for her is that somewhere along the line she's bound to get a nasty venereal disease. There finally comes a time with one character where things push Doella too far and she realizes, for at least a while, the error of her ways. Almost coming to a point of redeeming herself. But truly as with Casanova there is no help for her.Despite the dalliances and promiscuity the story has a plot and it's a fairly good one. I'm not all that sure about the resolution of the main plot, but it does fit the character and the story, so there is that. Though Doella does not come off very likable she is a unique character and a very interesting female protagonist. Now for the caveats; for those a bit particular about Grammar issues. There are some style issues and grammar problems with long sentences and punctuation and lack of or wrong punctuation. Those are also my own week spot, so if I notice them it usually means something. There are several missing words or in some cases extra words that don't seem to belong (enough of these to go beyond my usual threshold). This could have used another edit and I would give it a five star. This is an okay romance for mature adults and a good Fantasy for SFF fans who can tolerate the style choices. It is definitely not hard science fiction. J.L. Dobias

Battle with Demigods – A review of the novel ‘EL Diablo’ By MWB Review “The devil’s agents may be of flesh and blood, may they not?” - Arthur Conan DoyleAuthor Richard Dawes’ novel ‘EL Diablo,’ ninth book in the Tucson Kid Western series, has Tucson, the gun slinging hero of the story, taking on evil powers and dark forces in Mexico. Operating outside the law, yet doing so to bring down evil men, has been Tucson’s norm. But in El Diablo, he not only fights to overcome murderous thugs and bandits, but must also take on powerful dark Gods, and the black sorcerers who wage war and violence in the name of those Gods. Those readers who have followed Tucson’s exploits from book one (although the series is not a chronological representation of Tucson’s life), will have noticed the repeated telling of Tucson’s famed battle with the legendary outlaw, Augustine Baca. It has become a folk tale by which Tucson’s greatness and fighting prowess are measured and celebrated. But all that should change after his adventures in this edition and his epic fight with the powerful magician, EL Diablo. In previous stories, Tucson fought some of the most nefarious characters the old west had to offer. No matter how ruthless these fights were, however, the reader always knew that Tucson, with his superior fighting skills, would prevail in the end. But in this story, he has to fight an evil man who has supernatural powers attained through black magic and sorcery. Additionally, Tucson must go against a minion of EL Diablo - a vampire named Lilith able to suck the strength from her opponents. In this story, Richard Dawes has not only thrown the sink at Tucson, but the whole kitchen as well, as he faces his greatest enemies to date.It would be unfortunate if EL Diablo and Lilith were not given their own space. The author gave them great powers, and evil surrounds them at all times. Yet he provides insights into their minds by revealing their thoughts, which surprisingly strike the reader as human and mortal. Fear of failure and death looms large on their list of worries. This humanizes them and presents these characters, though highly evil, as real people with much to lose.In El Diablo, Tucson is in top form, and full credit must be given to the author for maintaining continuity in the character's persona through all nine stories. From the initial scenes where he is shown living an existential existence, through every step he takes as he strides through the story, the famed Tucson code of action is a prominent factor in the narrative. The action scenes, from the first one involving an outlaw called Jake, to picking off El Diablo’s men one by one, shows the finesse and expertise of the author in this genre. As always, nature plays an important role in the narrative, and is not merely used as background. The respect for it shows throughout.A definite read!

From 1947 until 1994, the Navy ran an officer training and commissioning program at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida. Outside the main academic building hung a wood sign with gold metal lettering. It read:"Through These Doors Walk The Future Of Naval Aviation"Between the covers of this book, A Marine Corps Drill Instructor presents a collection of stories, memories and recollections provided by now seasoned, U.S. Navy Officers. 240 stories are told with the same raw intensity as experienced decades earlier when the candidates were but young men and women trying to get past their Marine Drill Instructor to earn a commission that awaited them at the finish line. The insults, threats and even rare moments of enthusiastic support are all here. You won't find examples of political correctness, generalizations or pulling punches in this book, or any coddling of the candidates; future naval aviators were prepared here, it was the most intense officer candidate school in the military.

I travelled on a couple of long flights recently, and finally started reading the e-book...I was literally weeping on the flight, not from some kind of DI-induced PTSD trauma flashback, but from trying to suppress my laughter, chuckling and giggling uncontrollably. I had to stop reading several times to regain my composure. The passengers unfortunate enough to be seated next to me thought I was genuinely unbalanced or crazy.I'm not sure anyone who hasn't been through AOCS or some similar kind of military training will have the same reaction, but about halfway through the rich and colorful eyewitness accounts and memories of the AOCS experience, of Naval Aviation Officer Candidates trained by the best and toughest USMC Drill Instructors, whose mission was to separate those unsuited or unfit for the rigors of Naval Aviation flight training, I've come to the conclusion that author John Crouch knocked it out of the park--at least for those of us who experienced it. Reading others' stories, perspectives and perceptions have re-kindled a flood of memories in my own mind that I had forgotten. This was an extraordinary program, and John's collection is an important record of that now-gone training..I am glad the author, a USMC Drill Instructor in his own right, stuck with what must have been a 'labor of love' project, and his vision to collect these first-person accounts and put them on paper. The result is an important account of how several generations of Naval Aviators were trained, and at times, spectacularly funnily and moving.

By Blackbeard's Ghost This book should be preserved as a part of our national history. It's a collection of stories from one of the most difficult commissioning schools in any military of any age. Most are hilarious. Many are hard to believe. Having attended AOCS myself, this will be a book that I treasure for the rest of my life, and if my great great grandchildren want to know what things were like "back in the day", hopefully they will be able to read this book and have a laugh for themselves. And a gasp.It is a collection of stories, so at times the writing isn't perfect. However, that's part of what makes it a great read. You are reading it as though you are sitting in Trader Jon's, having a beer with the guys who attended. The stories go WAY back to the '50s and go on into the '90s. If you love military history, you owe it to yourself to read this amazing book.

By Patrol Navigator I went through this officer candidate school in the late 1960's...and I was in the very last class that spent only 12 weeks in that amazing program; after that, it expanded to 16 weeks. Face it, the Marine Drill Instructors who ran this program (back then) had to change hippies into trainable warriors in three months. An impossible task? Nope....because Marines were in charge. The first day the DI said: "For the next three months I will be you mother, father, pastor, sister and brother. But I will not be your girlfriend, so do not even think about trying to f*ck with me!" I remember my time there at AOCS in Pensacola more vividly than just about any period of my life. Just about every single day was a new challenge, a new experience. I almost daily felt fear, trepidation, disappointment in my failures, pride in my accomplishments, excitement, being tired beyond belief and more fear. I made it through…many did not.1st SGT John Crouch (the author – and a Drill Instructor himself), did not try to fill these pages with his own memories, though some are there. Instead he spent years searching out those men (and later women) who attended this officer training program and asked them to put their memories to paper…to relive with us readers what it was like to attend arguably the toughest officer candidate training program in the world. Though slightly edited, these “stories” have been penned by many - with different writing styles and recollections. Some (of the writers) dropped out (DOR’ed) but still remember their time in AOCS, some were disqualified for physical or academic short comings but most made it through the program, follow on flight training and combat service in “the fleet.” That these writers can call with such vividness their time in AOCS and their recollection of their Drill Instructor is a testament to the impact that training and Marine leadership had on them.Reading the pages within, immediately took me back to that time and, while there is some drama, these recollections prove the theory that, mainly, you remember the fun times and the funny things…and that some things that were incredibly dramatic, scary and painful in real time are funny in later life. Can’t tell you how many times I stopped reading because I was laughing so hard. The first two photos included with this review give you a feel for the intensity of the training in the very beginning. The third photo is of a few candidates, in 1968, after they first started to get “squared away.”I ordered the ePub (digital) version which I read. I also ordered the hardcover version so that it can sit in pristine condition on the bookshelf in my office. Kudos to 1st SGT Crouch!!

By Becca's Books Afternoon Tea at the Sunflower Cafe is the second novel that I have read by the marvellous Milly Johnson, the first being The Teashop on the Corner which I read back in 2014 (you can read my review here). I am always, always, always hearing wonderful things about this author, and after reading Milly's latest novel I can completely understand why.Afternoon Tea at the Sunflower Cafe was absolutely wonderful in every sense of the word. Milly's characters, their circumstances, and how their lives eventually intertwine had me falling deeper and deeper in love with this story with every turn of a page. Milly has such a unique voice when it comes to storytelling, and despite her well-known and much-loved novels falling into the same genres as so many other fantastic authors, there's still something there that sets her completely apart. I don't know whether its her genuine, down-to-earth tone, or the gorgeous descriptions which she uses to bring her stories to life, but Milly Johnson has got that something, folks. She has got that something.I think what I loved the most about Afternoon Tea at the Sunflower Cafe was the normalcy of the plot. I mean, the majority of the women that the readers meet within this story are part of Diamond Shine, a cleaning company who attend to people's homes weekly, who natter away with the clients with a cup of tea after their duties of polishing, hoovering and dusting are done with. Some I warmed to instantly. Others? Not so much. There was such a brilliant, bright and varied collection of characters within this novel, even the not-so-nice ones, who well and truly brought the story to life with their unique voices and characteristics. Milly chose to focus the narrative spotlight on a few specific women, each with their very own special story to tell, and each with their own fate that would befall them before the novel had ended. I was on tenterhooks as I watched this story unfold, and began to put two and two together as different characters stepped forward into the limelight and their tales began to unwind and curl around the plot and it developed. It was riveting, exciting, hilarious witty and funny, and indescribably heart-warming too, everything I could hope for in an excellent read.Becca's Books is awarding Afternoon Tea at the Sunflower Cafe by Milly Johnson with FIVE SCRUMMY CUPCAKES! I cannot wait to read more by this author, whether that be previous titles or upcoming releases, I love this author's voice and look forward to being audience to it again and again!

I've read quite a few of this authors books and all have been wonderful and this one is certainly no different. We meet an array of characters, some are really wonderful characters and there's a few not so nice ones also. My favourite ones had to be Connie, Della and Cheryl. They are the main characters but I loved all three of them for all different reasons. They are all fighting their own battles but they certainly don't let the problems define them. Della I think I was slightly scared of but she has a heart of gold underneath that cold exterior and Connie and Cheryl are just both the nicest characters you could imagine. I for one would love to be working alongside them all.Jimmy Diamond is quite the player and to start with I didn't really like him but for some reason even the not so nice characters I ended up feeling quite sorry for them. Not sure whether I was supposed to or not but then I have always been a bit of a softy.Brandon Locke, the master chocolatier, I may be slightly shallow but how can you not fall for someone that makes chocolate for a living? It would be my dream job, well to at least taste them which the lucky Connie gets to do. Chocolate does feature quite a lot in this book so don't be surprised if it doesn't leave you wanting to rush out to buy a big box of chocolates whilst reading it.I really enjoyed the storyline and after reading Afternoon Tea at the Sunflower Cafe I certainly have a new found respect for a lot of cleaners out there.Milly Johnson has created yet another fantastic read which will leave you feeling all warm and gooey inside. Loved it and can't recommend it highly enough.

By adam cooper As part of Team Milly, I was so excited when the postman delivered my pre-launch book. I loved the cover and couldn't wait to get started. As always, Afternoon Tea is so much more than a romance, or another "chick lit" book. Milly's characters are always deep and have stories to tell. I won't repeat the blurb - suffice to say this book is all about revenge being best served cold. Della and Connie make a great team under the disguise of Lady Muck (great name for a cleaning company!) The other characters all compliment each other well. Cheryl is a particularly sympathetic woman, and Astrid.......well, Astrid made me laugh out loud!I loved how Connie changed as the book went on and she grew in confidence. At the start you assume she is quite old, but as her character and confidence grow, you realise that isn't the case! The Sunflower Cafe features quite a lot as the safe haven for all the women. It is there they can talk freely and really get to know one another. As I said, I couldn't wait to get started but started reading more and more slowly because I didn't want it to end!Thank you, Milly, for another lovely, heart-warming book. And thank you for the Team Milly acknowledgement too!

The spoken teachings of Rumi's teacher, Shams of Tabriz, selected and edited by Camille Helminski. TRanslated by Camille Helminski & Refik Algan. Rumi's son wrote, "After meeting Shams, my father danced all day and sang all night. He had been a scholar; now he became a poet. He had been an ascetic, now he became drunk with Love." Shams of Tabriz was, indeed, Rumi's Sun, the one who caused him to radiate Divine Love. After almost 800 years the that light is spreading ore than ever to encompass the whole of the world. "Here is the dazzling stillness that Rumi spun around and around in his longing. ~Peter Kingsley "Look into the burning breast of Shams of Tabriz and you will see the Beloved looking back at you." ~Pir Zia Inayat-Khan Good translation By Berkeley Physics on March 13, 2013 Verified Purchase I'm enjoying this translation of the Maqalat-e Shams Tabrizi a lot! I'm not the biggest fan of the way they artificially split up the discourse, but it does add some structure to the content. How to develop more sincerity on the spiritual path. If he doesn't manage to get under your skin and push off the mask, then it is not for you. My softcover copy has survived a close encounter with a hard surface. Pay special attention then to who is his Master, after you make up. And note that there is a program for your instruction, should you care to follow it. If you don't fall in love with Sham after reading this book, then it is not for you. (And if this review is too cryptic, then it is not for you.)Here's an extended quote, an entry entitled 'Those who possess the Kernet' (which is followed by the entry "Ali and Muhammad').Begin quote:The universe of Truth is an infinitely wide expanse. According to some, it is extremely clear and simple. For some it is very difficult, while according to some it is very easy--yet because of this easiness the remain bewildered. Those who speak about such things, hesitate here.In the Hadith it has been said, "The Qur'an has seven levels of meaning of both the outer (zahir), the inner (batin), and the inner of the inner." Of these meanings, the scholars know the outer meanings, the saints know the inner meanings, and the prophets know the hidden meanings with the inner meanings, the fourth "none knows but God." So, how can the children of Adam benefit from this? There are many secrets within the hadith as there are in the Qur'an. As God Most High has said, "His heart did not deny what he saw .."[53.11]They also hesitate to speak about the meaning of the subtle point, "What no eye has seen and no ear has heard."End quote. (Let that serve as his own meta-review of this book.)This book is generously footnoted with highly informative content. A short introduction is followed by the main body of the text: a series of entries, ranging from short snippets to a few pages. It is clearly a labor of love, and a very valuable gift to the English reader. Many thanks to Refik Algan and Camille Adams Helsinki for their efforts. Highly recommended.

I am an agnostic, but as such I think it is my duty to delve into and explore different faiths and spiritual traditions. (Saying you don't know doesn't mean you stop looking) This book made a "passing interest" into complete admiration for a spiritual tradition that is rich, witty, wild, exuberant, frustrating, insane, mystical, and Transcendent. I have heard Sufism called the zen Buddhism of the western tradition. I think that makes sense. But there is something about this book that speaks to me in a way that no other book has. I don't know why. But that's the way it goes.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Riveting story, interesting and plausable plot. By un While I have not finished the book yet, I am thoroughly drawn into it. It's a very realistic plot based on some factual history. If you enjoy the PAW fiction genre the is for you. While it is not Post Apocalyptic, it is a riveting story, well thought out and a great book for a new author. If you enjoyed the Going Home: A Novel (The Survivalist Series Book 1) series, One Second After and others you will probably enjoy this. The other does a fair job of explaining some of the more obtuse language used in Australia that leaves many of us scratching our heads. It is a bit pricey, probably due to the fact the Author hasn't got a strong publisher yet, but I suspect it won't be long before picked up. Worth the investment in my view.I will update my review after I complete the story.

June 23, 1935 - President Roosevelt is dead. As the nation mourns, the forces of darkness see their chance to bring the United States into the fascist fold. Plots are devised and conspiracies hatched. Led by Huey Long, Father Coughlin and J. Edgar Hoover, the United States begins to fall into tyranny. All that now stands between America and a fascist dictator is the U.S. military under General Douglas MacArthur...a man who would be king.

An interesting concept, but as it's a re-write of a major play which is much more original than this adaptation of another's work the concept is flawed. I really dislike these books written by authors who clutter their basement with map tables, unit markers, moving battle lines and expect the reader to keep it all in order as they read. Can't be done. I also dislike the over use of middle names, as if the reader might otherwise confuse Omar Bradley with some other Omar Bradley if he failed to add the middle name "Nelson" so we don't make that mistake. Johannes Eugen Erwin Rommel...so we don't confuse with some other German general named Rommel. Churchill, Eden, Dulles, Curtis LeMay Huey Pierce Long, General Mark Wayne Clark and a gigantic host of others get the same treatment. Ike David Eisenhower is there, David so we don't wonder which Ike Eisenhower he's referring to. And what's the deal with a plaza in Dallas? Couldn't find another place for an assasination? In two volumes you could cut out everything but the middle names and still have a minimum of 25 pages. As I said, the overall idea is reasonable. But simply re-writing a play and substituting well known people for the originals is not authorship.

Extraordinary Alternate History By Mallory Heart Reviews Review: CAESAR AMERICANUS: AN AMERICAN CIVIL WAR -INTO TYRANNY by John-Allen PriceOne of my special interests is alternative history. Since childhood I've been a "what if?" person. I am overjoyed to discover (thanks to NetGalley) the exceptional independent historian and author John-Allen Price. INTO TYRANNY is the first volume in an incredible alternate rendering of not just the U.S., but Europe, on the eve of World War II. [Socialist France! The U. S. on the verge of Fascism!]Mr. Price not only paints the broad landscape of politics and politicians, of war and peace, of the American economy post-Depression. He also delineates human emotions: greed and respect, aggression and compassion, ego and altruism, grief and surrender, vengeance and hope. His chapters on the American populace's grief at FDR's early and untimely death in 1939 made me weep; it was similar, for me, to the grieving at the assassination of JFK. Even the characters who loom larger than life are still clearly individualized: the late FDR and Hitler, MacArthur and Patton, Hoover, Father Coughlin, Huey Long.INTO TYRANNY is an incredible novel. The next volume of CAESAR ANERICANUS: AN AMERICAN CIVIL WAR, INTO FIRE, releases December 1.The author and publisher generously provided a digital ARC via NetGalley, for review purposes only, at no remuneration.

Congress approving a Vice Presidential nominee in 1935? That was not possible until passage of the 25th amendment in 1967. How can the work of an author making such a major mistake be taken seriously?
