Spiritual Story By Debra VanHoose This story is centered around an old coal camp bunkhouse that served as the home of the coal mine's foremen and at times miners in need of a place to stay. Eventually the Graves family came to own the mountain home and kept the tradition alive by welcoming visitors and any in need of a warm bed and meal. The most important part of this story is the spiritual message. Clayton Graves is the person we should strive to emulate. and a reminder of how God works and how the faithful are rewarded. The last five chapters are riveting. I couldn't put the book down and the ending evokes powerful emotions.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I don't recall what drew me to this book, but once I started reading it, I was hooked! By Wuzzgal I don't recall what drew me to this book, but once I started reading it, I was hooked! It's a book about Clayton Graves, a man who practices what he has learned as a Christian. He is not a rich man as far as personal possessions go, but we learn that he is a man with many riches waiting for him in heaven. He lives in an old mine cabin which has a bunkhouse attached. With him lives the last of his family, his grand-daughter, Elizabeth. Lost travelers, friends, people who have lost their homes to natural disasters, etc. are all welcome for as long as they want or need to stay. We meet the many people who enjoy his hospitality and follow along with the bumps in the roads Clayton has traveled. The characters are so clear you feel you have met them all, and you become involved in their lives. Through all that he encounters, Clayton maintains his faith. The book was riveting. I hated to put it down. This was definitely an inspirational book. We should all strive to be like Clayton.I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A great read with a lasting impact! By mrcdenver The centerpiece of this book is the old coal mine bunkhouse that was originally used by the miners of the coal mine. When the mine shut down the owners, the Graves family become owner/caretakers of the bunkhouse. Although Clayton Graves is the owner of the property he looks at it as God's bunkhouse and it is open to all who need a place to stay. This book starts out slowly but then becomes something that I was almost unable to put down! The main character's in the bunkhouse are Clayton and his beloved young granddaughter Elizabeth. They are all that is left in the Graves family. There are many other people that come into play in this book that all are helped by Clayton. When Clayton is in need of help there were many of these people who were there for him. Many of the things that happen in this book would definitely be called God things. This books message will stay with you long after you finish it! I was provided a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

Familiar Evil goes inside an investigation that sent shockwaves from Louisiana to London. When a young British businessman coincidentally connects with an American public relations consultant, the two end up working with authorities on an international criminal case that builds to an explosive conclusion. -- With raw honesty and unparalleled access, Familiar Evil tells the story of one man's international search for a child predator–how perseverance, courage, and the enduring belief in good over evil prove the power of one. Twenty years before this story begins, a hung jury in England allowed Scott Rogers, principal at the performing arts academy, to avoid prison on charges of sexual assault against a young student and quietly slip out of the country. Ethan, a successful businessman, husband, father, and former academy student, always knew the jury got it wrong. He knew his classmates had told the truth, and he knew Rogers would continue to abuse until somebody stopped him. For 13 years, Ethan searched for Rogers. His efforts finally paid off when he found Rogers’ name in an online search, referenced in the letter to the editor of a daily newspaper in Louisiana. He took a bold step. He emailed its author, public relations consultant Rannah Gray. This is their story. For the next 365 days, Ethan and Rannah worked to expose the truth, becoming confidential informant to a federal investigation that uncovered how Rogers had used deceit and fraud to gain U.S. citizenship. With colorful criminal defense attorney Nathan Fisher and gutsy paralegal Mary Jane Marcantel, the foursome discovered that Rogers had brought several teenagers to the U.S., exploiting some as sex slaves. Claiming friendships with a powerful federal judge, The head of State Police, and the local Sheriff, Rogers became increasingly brazen. As law enforcement agencies in two countries were working to stop him, he was surreptitiously moving to adopt more young boys into his home from state custody. Familiar Evil reveals never-before-told details of the hunt for Rogers. Along the way, licensed clinical social worker Leslie Todd provides chilling insight into the minds of sexual predators who seek power and control over their victims. This is a story that sent shockwaves across two continents– the story that can be told only by those inside the investigation and the heroic British survivors of Scott Rogers’ abuse. Acclaim: Rannah Gray’s book is fascinating, well written, and meticulously researched. But most important, it helps spread the message that there is a secret, worldwide epidemic of child abuse… nurtured in the darkness of denial, shame, and perversion. And protecting our children agains “Stranger Danger” is not enough. — Dr. Sandra Harley Carey Author, Deviant Behavior: Crime, Conflict and Interest Groups Former board member, Children’s Advocacy Center of Comal County, Texas

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. You will never want to put this book down! By Juan C. Pisani This book is so juicy! I can't put it down. I have never read a book this big before "Familiar Evil". EVER!But this book is so good that it feels the smallest of books. I am actually getting sad the thought that I am almost done since it has been my companion for the last 2 weeks everywhere I went. I would take it with me to work all the time, knowing it was there for me just in case I wanted to hide a read more pages. I'm I never got caught. The story of this book is very real and very sad. I, myself, am a victim of sexual abuse when I was very young. It is very easy to read because of the short chapters and very well written. I hope this book gets picked up for a movie or even a short series format. Congratulations to Rannah Gray for bringing this story forward and your persistence in getting all the facts right. I will buy more copies so I can send to all my friends and family.

I didn't know everything that happened and I wanted more details. I could not believe I knew some of the people duped by Scott Rogers in this thriller. My daughter worked at The Silver Sun during this time and she was directly affected financially. I couldn't understand how a fellow from the UK had a show on tv early Sunday mornings! It's quite a page turner and it's so hard to believe we local people knew who most of those who are in her book. Scott Rogers was evil and Rannah made sure she did the right thing and kept him from hurting other children. It started by writing one letter to the editor and naming Scott Rogers. The rest is history... Excellent read, and I highly recommend it!

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A really interesting book By TeeCee Familiar Evil is a captivating read written by one of the people who helped expose a pedophile predator who masqueraded as an upstanding citizen of Baton Rouge. The number of prominent people who were fooled by Scott Rogers is totally amazing. This should be lesson to us all.

‘A lovely, romantic and historical read’ – Linda’s Book Bag

June 1963, Clematis Cottage, Stoke St. Mary, Herefordshire

I am really not sure why I am writing this. A foolish whim by a foolish old lady and it will probably sit in a box unread and decay much like its writer when Death makes his careless decision.

But perhaps someone will find it. Someone will care enough to read and somehow I know that will happen.

April 2000, Clematis Cottage, Stoke St. Mary, Herefordshire

Tired of her life in London, freelance illustrator Rachel buys the beautiful but dilapidated Clematis Cottage and sets about creating the home of her dreams. But tucked away behind the water tank in the attic and left to gather dust for decades is an old biscuit tin containing letters, postcards and a diary. So much more than old scraps of paper, these are precious memories that tell the story of Henrietta Trenchard-Lewis, the love she lost in the Great War and the girl who was left behind.

‘A really interesting book – full of history and romance – and missed opportunities’ – Annie’s Book Corner

About the Author

I used to live in London, where I worked in the theatre. Then I got the bizarre job of teaching road safety to the U.S. navy – in Marble Arch!A few years ago, I did an ‘Escape to the Country’. I now live in a tiny Herefordshire village, where I scandalise the neighbours by not keeping ‘country hours’ and being unable to make a decent pot of plum jam. Home is a converted oast house, which I share with my two beloved spaniels, husband (also beloved) and a ghost called Zoe.I’ve been lucky enough to travel widely, though prefer to set my novels closer to home. Perhaps more research is needed? I’ve always wanted to base a book in the Caribbean!I am addicted to Belgian chocolate, Jane Austen and, most of all, Strictly Come Dancing. Keep dancing, everyone!

By Ali - The Dragon Slayer This is such a pleasant book .. it sucks you in gently & keeps the reader entranced with the beautifully descriptive writing.I would love to be in Clematis cottage, how delightful does that sound!?Its ‘slips’ between two time periods but does so seamlessly, I often find this style confusing but the beauty of this is the letters found by Rachel transport her back to Hetty’s life. It’s full of emotion & is essentially a love story .. I have to say my favourite character was probably Piglet but I’m a sucker for a cute puppy!Easy to read & it made a welcome change to be set in the British countryside for a change .. I seem to have read a glut of books set in varying countries recently & this made me realise there is nothing quite so relaxing as local talent & to feel as if I was there. Thanks to the author, publisher & Brook Cottage Books for the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest opinion.

Enchanting By Welsh Annie I really enjoyed this lovely book, every moment of it - and both threads of the story enchanted me to the same degree. The modern story of Rachel's life change, moving to Clematis Cottage, learning to live like someone from the country, over-run by workmen, making new friends (and more) is really well told. And when she's handed the Huntley and Palmer's biscuit tin filled with letters, the book becomes simply perfect as it moves quite seamlessly between Rachel's life and Hetty's letters and diary entries. We read Hetty's personal story, brought up by her maiden aunts with the occasional visits from her remote father, her first visit to Delamere House in 1903 and her entanglement with the Trenchard-Lewis family, through her growing up years then through the early years of the First World War. But the story abruptly ends in 1916, and Rachel sets about uncovering the rest of Hetty's story - I shared her fascination, however much there were others who felt it became an obsession. I also really liked the way that Hetty was a benevolent presence in the house, gently urging her on.It's quite difficult to convey someone's personality through letters and diary entries, but the author does it really well - she comes across quite clearly, likeable but also wilful and stubborn. The other personalities in her story are really well drawn too - Richard as a boisterous child and a damaged adult, the slightly more sketchy and less sympathetically drawn Edward, the teacher at the village school where she helps out. The story is - as the author describes it - the story of the affair of her body, the affair of her expectation and the affair of her soul, and it was heartbreaking, joyful and wonderful.Rachel has a great story too - what with Neil the estate agent, the suitor her mother would approve of with his solid reliability (and unfortunate obsession with triathlons), and Gabe the builder with his hidden gentle depths and rippling muscles. There are some equally perfectly drawn characters in her part of the story - I particularly loved her friendship with Ned the gardener in his string vest and with his liking for milky sweet instant coffee and appreciation of "owl frisky" living, and with Gabe's lovely mother Sheila. I laughed at her interactions with the less savoury members of the building team, and her London friend Tim is great fun (I just loved the birthday present...!). Even the less central characters leap into life - menopausal Rita at the village shop, Kit the vicar, Alan at the pub, and the ominous presence of Dawn the barmaid.Georgia Hill writes wonderful descriptions - the views from Clematis Cottage would have made me want to get my sketch book out and draw them too, and there are some lovely set pieces like the "morning washed clean" that prompts Rachel to don her wellingtons and slip out "into the magic". Clematis Cottage itself, and the garden being worked on by Ned, became totally real to me. She does ugliness well too - the modern story introduces the impact of the foot and mouth crisis on the countryside, and the images she conveys are vivid, real and upsetting. This was really excellent story telling, full of love, loss, sadness and joy, with perfectly judged gentle humour - I really enjoyed it very much. And the ending - simply perfect. If you enjoy dual time story telling as much as I do, I'd highly recommend this lovely read.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Sweet and lovely By DiL A delightful and sweet romantic novel with a parallel story via an old journal found in a country cottage. Rachel is an illustrator from London who moves to the country, hoping to jump start her life. Having bought an old country cottage that requires a lot of repair work, she meets a hot young contractor/handyman named Gabe. They find a hidden biscuit tin that contains an old journal, letters and pictures belonging to the lady that previously lived in the cottage. The novel is a progression of the romance between Rachel and Gabe as well as a parallel discovery of the life and loves of Hetty, the previous owner. There are of course the village characters who are thankfully, not written as kooky caricatures, but add to the village life. There's even a cute puppy named Piglet later in the story. Overall, a sweet story with an interesting look into the early 1900's and especially the devastation of the first World War.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. well done.... By Norma Slattery I love True crime and unsolved murders this one was great.. my only complaint is it was to short . I don't know much about the author but I hope to read more from them. There were cases I've never read and that's hard to find. Most books are the same cases all over again. Not this book....

Asberry 03/13/16 - 03/13/16I chose this book because true crime and human behavior, thought processes, etc fascinate me. Don't freak out, I'm not psychotic. I like to read, study, and observe. What gets into These people? Why do they do what they do? Is it just funny to them? Did something go awry during the moral development phase? Lots of variables to consider; sadly though, it doesn't change the violence and pain they have caused others. This book, true to its name does discuss fifty (50) of the world's unsolved murder cases. Some summaries discuss the victim/s, and how the murderer/s was/were never found. Other summaries discuss the murderer, Zodiac for example and the fact that these cases all remain unsolved.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An honest, heartfelt read, from one of Ireland's most charming and talented female fiction writers. By bleachhouselibrary Georgina is starting a new phase of her life. Recently separated from her husband, she is learning to be a single mother and adjusting to being a single woman, instead of one half of a couple. One of her new experiences is becoming a carer to alzheimer's sufferer, Áine Quigley. The elderly lady has begun to deteriorate and her son has finally accepted that she needs help. Georgina and Áine take a while to find their rhythm, but pretty soon they bring out the best in each other. Áine's memories are fleeting and her carer helps her recall them, while all the while remaining cautious of their effects. The women help each other, without even realising it, and their friendship becomes more important than the disease. But are the memories safe to rekindle? Should the past be left forgotten? How much of Áine is still simmering behind the dementia? Georgina feels that Áine is still there, and is ready to support her, no matter what...This dual-time story flicks from 1960's UK and Italy, back to the present day. Áine and her sister, Charlotte are like chalk and cheese, with one escaping the mundane, pre-planned life while the other stays at home to keep the cogs turning at home. When tragedy strikes, Áine's life takes on new meaning and she sees herself in a very different role. Family attitudes and expectations are forever hovering on the peripheral, yet she aches to be loved for herself.Back in the present day, Georgina can see chinks of what she imagines is the real Áine, through the steady confusion of dementia. She knows that Áine is a woman of character and has her own distinctive story, but can also see how her past is being gradually eaten away by her disease. She knows that the job of carer has its limitations, and ignores recommended protocol and employment guidelines, instead focusing on befriending her client. Her own life is in limbo, so the two women have something different to offer each other.Claire Allan has a way of bringing her characters to life, in her own distinctive way. She avoids over-sentimentality and instead focuses on the narrative. There is a warmness within her words and an appreciation of the individuality of her character's stories. Áine is a charming example. While some would see alzheimer's patients with a broad-stroke view of dismissive indifference, the author added depth to the narrative. While some writers portray carers as slaves to martyrdom, this novel shows these workers as regular, everyday men and women who just want to earn a living, while helping others who can't help themselves. Georgina and Áine are an unlikely duo, but they need each other equally. They bring out the best in each other, while dodging days of confusion and despair, yet through it all, hold their dignity as much as possible. The extra characters are there to help balance the overall tale and the split time-frame is great. I did find myself wanting to read more and more about Áine's past and flicked through the book with great gusto. There are elements for those who love a good romance, but for me, this was a story of personality. The one we are born with, carry forward through our teenage years, into our adult lives and which makes us who we are. This is the story of what happens when that personality starts to lose its grip, and becomes muddled up, out of control. Will people remember that you are still you?An honest, heartfelt read, from one of Ireland's most charming and talented female fiction writers. Ideal for an evening by the fire, candle lit and the doors shut to the cold of winter...

This book continues through the author's life using personal stories to relate the principles of overcoming trials and living a life led by The Holy Spirit. Her book satisfies the reader with biographical interest, literary elements of allegory, and practical theological application. Dr. Robertson's stories are relatable, often humorous, and sometimes raw, giving the reader an honest look at the realities of healing, obedience, and spiritual warfare. The applications and extra resources are ideal for helping the reader recognize and deal with areas of spiritual hinderance. I would recommend reading both books of the series so far for maximum benefit from the applications and fullest understanding of the author's journey.

Master swindler George Graham Rice operated at the zenith of America's golden age of con artistry with plenty of illicit competition, but he stood apart from all others thanks to the sheer audacity, pure nerve and nefarious brilliance of his scams. Against the dark rise of American greed in the early 20th Century into the Roaring Twenties, the dapper but devious "GG" feasted on a nation of gullible prey with the flair of circus showman P.T. Barnum and on a financial scale comparable to modern fraudster Bernie Madoff.Born Jacob Simon Herzig in 1870, he later changed his name - just as he would frequently change his swindles - to make himself into one of the most imaginatively successful villains in American history. With only seven dollars to his name, Rice parlayed a chance horse racing tip into millions, lost it all to pride and ego, then won it back many times over. Vilified by securities regulators as the "Jackal of Wall Street," he sparked riots in Manhattan's financial district by perfecting the art of "bucket shop" trading with the sole purpose of bilking the public blind. From the lawless frontier of the Gold Rush to his lust for dizzying riches on Wall Street, GG's supreme knowledge of "sucker psychology" empowered him to orchestrate everything from street corner rip-offs for pocket change to elaborately scripted gambling hoaxes for hundreds of thousands of dollars, all while being vilified by old-guard profiteers like J.P. Morgan and befriended by gangsters like Arnold Rothstein. In My Adventures with Your Money, T.D. Thornton has given us an unforgettable real-life version of The Sting with one of America's most colorful con men at its center.

My Adventures with Your Money: George Graham Rice and the Golden Age of the Con Artist, by T.D. Thornton

Review "Mr. Thornton offers up a hugely entertaining biography....My Adventures With Your Money is written in a fast-paced and jaunty style, as befits the subject....Yet Mr.Thornton also has a sharp eye for detail...The Jazz Age is wonderfully conjured up with its numerous crazes and dubious promotions, from 'extracting gold from seawater...to devising a "spirit laboratory" to consult dead inventors'...My Adventures With Your Money is a grand addition to the grifting genre. Pick your own pocket and buy a copy." - The Wall Street Journal"Thornton tells the story of the most notorious grifter you probably never heard of...As such, his story is an interesting tour through the early years of Wall Street and the often blurry lines between legal and illegal business practices. A good read for anyone interested in confidence men and the history of Wall Street." - Kirkus"The book succeeds where a lot of biographies fail. This is as much a book about human nature as it is about George Graham Rice." -  Bill Finley, Thoroughbred Daily News"If you're ever tempted to believe that the current financial system has never been shadier or more corrupt, this book will quickly cause you to count your blessings. At one level, this book is a biography of an infamous con artist who makes Bernie Madoff look virtuous by comparison. But it is also a biography of an economic landscape in the first decades of the 20th Century, a time when swindles, con artistry and rip-offs dominated the land." - Ranked #5 of 10 Best Business Books of 2015 by Wealth Management"A rollicking story of high-stakes tomfoolery." - The Dispatch"The narrative is evocative and a great insight into the power of promotion, illusion and creative journalism...This reader found My Adventures with Your Money to be a very unusual and intriguing book, focusing on the Roaring Twenties from a fascinating new angle." - History ASM

"A hugely entertaining biography... My Adventures With Your Money is a grand addition to the grifting genre. Pick your own pocket and buy a copy." - Wall Street Journal

"This remarkable read of a man who swindled thousands of people out of millions of dollars is for fans of con artists, stock market history, and the films Wall Street and The Wolf of Wall Street." - Library Journal

"Set against the backdrop of the Roaring ’20s and its subculture of con men, this dazzling portrait traces Rice’s progress from small-time grifts such as inflating penny stocks to later being known as the “Jackal of Wall Street.” Thornton successfully transforms this unsavory character into a charming, irresistible anti-hero. This easy-to-read tale of survival during the earliest part of the 20th century will make readers hungry for more grifts." - Publishers Weekly“Packed with rich period detail and written in a rollicking style that perfectly captures the sheer, unbounded vitality of its incorrigible subject, T.D. Thornton's My Adventures with Your Money is a both vivid evocation of a uniquely colorful era in our nation's past and a dazzling portrait of one of its most flamboyant figures--George Graham Rice, con-artist extraordinaire. Thanks to Thornton's exuberant biography, the unaccountably forgotten Rice has been restored to his rightful place alongside the likes of P. T. Barnum and Charles Ponzi in the great rogues gallery of all-American hucksters, swindlers, and confidence men.” - Harold Schechter, author of The Mad Sculptor: The Model, the Maniac, and the Murder that Shook the Nation

“In My Adventures with Your Money, T.D. Thornton shows us the heart and soul, such as they were, of one of our finest swindlers. This rollicking and highly entertaining portrait of George Graham Rice, a top-drawer hustler in the nation's great era of con, never fails to fascinate. From doped-up thoroughbreds to bogus gold stocks, Rice's money-making schemes roped in the suckers. But the big winners here are Thornton's lucky readers.” - Doug J. Swanson, author of "Blood Aces: The Wild Ride of Benny Binion, the Texas Gangster Who Created Vegas Poker

Thornton explores the human nature in all of us.....a relentless fascination with get rich quick schemes and a willingness to rub elbows with the characters and scoundrals of con artistry.....from the race track to Wall Street to the Wild West, Thornton has done a masterful job of presenting the con game in the Roaring Twenties. A must read for horse racing fans, Wall Street investors, and those of us interested in getting rich....quickly!

A Book Showing It Pays to be Careful By Ancient_Fossil Mr. Thornton’s excellent and entertaining book was recently reviewed in the Wall Street Journal. There is little to add to this well written evaluation; readers are advised to find it, if possible. This history of scamming and cons is nicely organized and composed. Many hard facts and interesting facets are presented, certain eras and decades are particularly well summarized. This is especially true of the 1920’s, the years preceding the Great Depression. The author is congratulated for his succinct analysis.Mr. Thornton’s best sections describe cons and frauds, how they present, are managed and invariably end. That is why I bought this book, and I was well rewarded. Understanding greed and vulnerability is a critical money management skill, and the book should be mandatory reading for every investor and businessperson. Neglecting this is flirting with disaster, exactly what Mr. Thornton repeatedly illustrates throughout. It is why and how cheats and scoundrels continue to find marks easy to fleece. The Gans-Nelson prize fight, particularly well presented, and is a fascinating sidelight. It is interesting to realize the astounding sums of money involve in Herzig-Rice’s scheming distortions, how he managed to surmount roadblocks to his mercenary goals, and how easy it was (and still is) to deceive people. As Mr. Thornton describes early in his book, recent Madoff-style betrayals prove we remain easy objects of deceptions. There are only a few, minor criticisms: more illustrations and maps of the far West would have been useful. (I have visited most of these towns; a few are considered “ghost” towns, although they have a few residents.)In summary, Mr. Thornton published a very fine description and history of financial deception and a professional fraud. It is a well written, enjoyable and entertaining book that is highly recommended.

King of the Con Men By Rob Hardy Everyone knows what a Ponzi scheme is, although the man for whom it is named, Charles Ponzi, is pretty much forgotten. Everyone knows who Bernie Madoff is, although half a century from now perhaps he will be forgotten, too. We have also forgotten George Graham Rice, although his contemporaries knew the name well. There is now an entertaining biography of one of the top American con artists: _My Adventures with Your Money: George Graham Rice and the Golden Age of the Con Artist_ (St. Martin’s Press) by T. D. Thornton. It isn’t just a biography of Rice, but also a look at what he was selling and why it was so attractive, what sort of people wanted to buy from him, and how the era made it possible. Rice worked very hard, and was really good at what he did, and much of the book is a rollicking story of high-stakes tomfoolery.Rice got an early start on bilking people by scamming his family. He was prodigiously smart, and a smooth talker, but honest application bored him. He went on to live a dandified youth by bouncing checks on the family business; the father honored the checks but had the son arrested. Jacob was sent to a reformatory where he befriended an elderly con man, Willie Graham Rice, learned some of his friend’s techniques, and adopted his name. Rice’s first endeavor was based on horse racing. He would not be the one betting on the races; he formed a race-tipping service for subscribers of his racing paper. When the paper folded, he went west to Nevada, where prospecting towns were springing up. Not for him was the toil of digging; instead, he formed a brokerage to sell penny mining stocks; he might be said to have originated the penny stock system. The mining business boomed and failed, and Rice returned to Wall Street. He wasn’t part of the official Stock Exchange, but entered the Curb Exchange, the outdoor market that was unregulated. It was within the arena of the Curb Exchange that Rice met and partnered with Arnold Rothstein, a powerful gangster who may have been America’s first organized-crime boss and who was implicated in the notorious fix of the 1919 World Series. Rothstein’s legal team was to prove invaluable for Rice, but nonetheless he did get a four year sentence handed to him a few weeks after the market crash of October 1929, and he served it in a penitentiary in Atlanta, where Al Capone invited him to share his cell and the luxuries therein. “I’ll take Al’s word,” said Rice, “quicker than anybody on the stock exchange.”The bust of the depression years changed everything. The public was more wary, and the government more vigilant. The age of the big, flashy con was over, and it is hard to trace Rice’s last years. No newspaper included an obituary when he died in 1943. Thornton has cheekily lifted the title of his book from a memoir Rice himself wrote in 1913, a bit of pilfering that Rice would have appreciated. Rice’s book bore this dedication: “To the American Damphool Speculator, surnamed the American Sucker, otherwise described herein as The Thinker Who Thinks He Knows But Doesn’t—greetings! This book is for you! Read as you run, and may you run as you read.” It is a measure of Rice’s confidence and skill that he could write a con man’s memoir and then continue taking the suckers in. His was an astonishing, not an admirable, career, fully worthy of this lively and funny biography.

In 2013, José Mujica is the president of Uruguay. A man who's lifestyle differs radically from other heads of state. President Mujica has rejected the use of the presidential palace and chosen to stay living in his house, a small farm on the outskirts of Montevideo. His home is located in a remote area with roads of dirt and under the custody of only two policemen. Mujica says to be coherent with his way of thinking, he declares that he takes from the world only what he needs. For this reason, he lives away from any opulence, drives his own car, does not employ any house cleaning or assistance, works mainly from his home and donates 90% of his salary to different charities. José Mujica seems to be a character born from a fantasy novel, but the president is very real. This volume compiles a selection of his most memorable quotes from where there is much to learn.

Polley This would be a good book except for the nonexistent editing, which results in printing the same quote over and over again, and at least one glaring spelling error, in which President Mujica "swore his oat on March 10th, 2010." Obviously this is supposed to be his "oath" of office. What made the error hilariously funny was turning the page and finding "oat" as the first word to be read. There is really no excuse for the errors and the terrible editing, which turned the book into an unreadable book that I didn't finish.

Here is an excerpt from the book:

There is an untold story behind Donald Trump that reveals that his entrance into politics is not an anomaly, but a natural progression of his career as a public figure. Trump casts himself as a political outsider, but, in so many ways, Trump has been hovering on the periphery of the political establishment for decades. A gravitational pull has been tugging him closer and closer to its center. Ironically, the establishment folks were the ones inviting him to join all along. Meanwhile, as he was being nudged toward politics, his career in business was cultivating the skills and, most importantly, the connections needed to succeed as a politician, while his career as an entertainer was training him in the theatrics and originality of a political hotshot.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I wanted to know more. By TxLadyrah I enjoyed this book very much. It's very well written, and easy to follow. However, I wanted to know more. I'm sure a man as complex as Donald Trump could have had more written about him. Perhaps we'll find out if he becomes our President.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Balanced Approach to Understand the Genius of Trump. Great Title for Kindle Unlimited Library. By Bill Anderson Length: Print, 35 pages; Audible, 1 hour 10 minutes.Target Audience/Genre: This brief article is provided for people interested in the notorious candidate who is, at nearly every critical juncture, proving his genius as a deal maker extraordinaire. What was the Amazon Rank on the date this review was published? 98,099.Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first? Yes, but this should be only a starting point. Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures? No, a few, but not very many.Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read? Yes, it should take not more than an hour for most people to read. What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made? Except when using direct quotes, there is no foul language. Plain English. What I actually appreciated is that the article was reasonably balanced. I had expected it to be a rah rah endorsement of a man I’ve always had mixed opinions regard. Only in the last few days have I come to understand, what makes the Donald so polarizing and so successful (even in the face of extreme crisis and inevitable failure) is that Donald Trump is a genius, is an incredibly quick thinker when on his feet, and has a will to succeed beyond the imagination of most everybody.Having stated his genius, I remain extremely skeptical regarding his ability to govern the United States. I am only trying to point out that he is especially brilliant. Similar to Steve Jobs, Trump does not play by the rules. He makes the rules. Such a person succeeds greatly or fails greatly. However, they rarely, if ever, govern successfully. Further, such brilliant people frequently have problems getting along with other people. That, however, is of critical import when running the greatest country on Earth. But, this is a review, not a political analysis. My point is that this article does do a credible job giving us a review of Donald Trump’s biography. The first two chapters are more about his grandfather and father. Although they don’t shed much light of importance relative to Donald Trump, the two chapters make for interesting reading.I’ve included a small excerpt below, so readers can peruse the style of presentation utilized by the author.EXCERPTTrump’s empire was crumbling; the media would not stop barking, and he even lost the loyalties of his children. “How can you say you love us? You don’t love us! You don’t even love yourself. You just love your money,” Donald Jr. reportedly told his father, furious because Donald seemed to prefer Maples over his mother. Amidst the chaos, another soap opera blew up in Trump’s face. His second marriage fell apart. His first ex-wife could stop twisting the knife in his back; his sheer existence seemed like punishment enough. Understandably, Trump seemed cool to the idea of a second marriage; he felt that the first one had been a ticking-time bomb. Marla and Trump had postponed plans on five separate occasions until 1992 when she offered him an ultimatum. Together Together, the couple had a daughter, Tiffany. Maples attempted to calm the storms of the nineties; she tried to bring a sense of intimacy and spirituality to Trump’s universe. She likely wanted to usher him into a quieter, less bombastic role. She probably saw no need to make more money, conquer more markets; the man had seemed to do enough already. “Marla wanted to do things, go places, vacation in Europe. He’ll go to Europe— but to go shopping for business,” one tabloid read. The mogul had developed an obsession with work, affording himself little time for leisure. As he would do with a real estate project gone south, Trump lost interest in Marla. The two announced their divorce in 1997 to the howls of the tabloids. For her part, Ivana had no comment.Around this time, however, Trump managed to get back on his feet. The rough-and-tumble 1990s seemed like a karmic punishment for his smashing success in the 1980s. The late 1990s boom has been well documented by economists, and Trump himself gives evidence to such a turnaround. By the time of his divorce with Maples, Trump had restored millions of his assets. The bleeding stopped around 1995, and, by 1997, Trump was again worth an impressive two billion dollars. He outlived those in the press who were trying to bring him down. The damage done to the Trump brand had been permanent. A public opinion poll, released in 1999 and conducted by CBS, showed that over 70% of Americans had an unfavorable opinion of Trump. He had recovered his financial empire but he had lost the public relations campaign. To rehabilitate himself, he knew he needed to pivot away from real estate. The comeback kid narrative would not serve him well in the field. He thus decided to make a play for the position he had passed up in 1988. Trump was never short of encouragement, either. He had received a letter from Richard Nixon after his appearance on The Phil Donahue Show way back in 1988. The former president predicted that, “Whenever you decide to run for office, you will be a winner!” In 2000, Trump declared his candidacy for President of the United States. He hoped Nixon would prove to be right.Southerland, Benjamin (2015-11-03). Donald Trump: A Biography of the Mogul Turned Presidential Candidate (Kindle Locations 297-317). . Kindle Edition.Bottom Line:I recommend this book for anyone who wants to quickly review Donald Trump’s history without wading through a score of google searches or reading the one-sided comments by either his supporters or detractors. I wish the article was more than a simple regurgitation of articles penned by others though, and feel the selling price is a bit steep for 35 pages, therefore, I recommend it more as a Kindle Unlimited borrow than as a purchase. In other words, I rate it as four stars out of five.Comments?

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Inspiring and very detailed By Soul Lifted 82 "And So I Rode" is a very inspiring account of this remarkable teenager's Pacific Coast cycling adventure! The journal entries are concise and straightforward, yet the imagery he stirs up in each day's after comments draws the reader into both the scenery and his struggles. His descriptions of the landscape drew me into the beautiful Pacific Northwest and California coast. The details of what he ate, the route he took, campground details and the obstacles he encountered would all be helpful to someone planning a similar ride down the coast. If you want to be motivated to reach a seemingly unattainable goal, (cycling or anything else) read this book and find courage to embark on your own journey.

I will admit I am biased as I know the author and watched the progress of his trip. Andrew provides insights of a young man striking out on a quite an adventure. He provides insights as to his daily mental and physical struggles and his determination to complete what he started. He offers insights into his own personal drive to achieve and a loving relationship with both his parents as well as their concern and support. Both the trip and the book are an achievement for anyone, much less a 16 year old. Enjoyable read.
