By Lexar There were many things that I just couldn't enjoy about this book, and I feel like a lot of the positive reviews don't consider some of these things as actual problems.First, the writing was good. There were a few typos, and you notice when you see them, but it wasn't anything too terrible. My issue isn't with the writing, but with what was written. Some things were unbelievable while others just left a bad taste in my mouth. (Spoilers ahead:)In the very beginning of the prologue, we meet a twelve-year-old King, who is apparently at school on a playground. A playground with sandboxes. Now, at 12 King should be in middle school, so I don't know what that boy is doing with a recess break, but it left me confused right off the bat. On the one hand, they seem like they should be in elementary school, but then they seem older than they are, and it just left me unimpressed with King's character. I understand that abuse can age a person beyond their years, but that's not what came through to me.Neither King nor Preppy ever managed to endear themselves to me, and I wasn't really complaining when Preppy kicked the bucket. These characters aren't bad boys, angsty and misunderstood--they're bad people. And not just because they're involved in the drug business or because of the parties they attend. They're killers, and I wouldn't put sexual assault or rape past either of them. King flat out says that Preppy enjoys taking a woman even when she says no. And maybe that was meant to scare Doe (not that it did, of course) but that's not something to joke about. It doesn't matter that Doe's body responded to King's for their first few sexual encounters--it's clear that her predominant emotion towards him is fear, and that never stops him. They're in the truck at one point, and he claims that Doe not asking for it keeps him from hitting a home run, but her not asking for it didn't keep him from getting to third base. Their entire relationship is about what King wants, and King forcing Doe to go along with him. Nothing about their relationship with each other was romantic so much as it was disturbing. King needs serious help, because he vacillates between wanting Doe's body and wanting her dead. You would think that would send any sane person running for the hills, or at least stamp down any flames of attraction. Doe didn't get this message. I noticed some of the other reviews, before I read the book, that said Doe was spunky, or something like that. That she wasn't helpless. This was not the character that I saw. I don't blame Doe for being afraid, and I don't blame her for the moments where she's angry. But she never sticks to her anger, or at least fakes a confidence that backs up her words. She blurts something out that hints at a backbone, but then immediately cowers. She gets angry at King, and all he has to do to make his betrayal better is shove her against a wall. King is obsessive and crazy and I don't know if she doesn't realize it or if she doesn't care but it's not sexy and it's not romantic--it's concerning. Obviously we haven't really met Tanner, so maybe he's a psychotic lunatic too, but quite frankly that is the relationship I ended the book rooting for.The other one-star review that I saw mentioned how this book had all the drama of several soap opera seasons crammed into one story, and I can't help but agree. You have amnesia, you have a biker gang, you have hookers and strippers, you have drugs, you have a romance and betrayal, you have an evil drug distributor, you have a raped heroine, a dead best friend, two kids who pop out of nowhere, and enough secret pasts to make your head spin. Almost none of it made a significant contribution to the story. Why did King go off with a brunette right after his date with Doe, have her see the other girl go down on him, and then chase after her when Doe is being comforted by Bear? I don't know. He says he wanted to push Doe away. Why? No idea, but I have a feeling it's linked to his crazy. Why did Doe need to be raped if that wasn't going to have repercussions on her relationship with King or her psyche? No actual reason. Why did both King and Doe need to have children? I don't know, but I hope those two kids turn out fine and end up together. That's the second relationship I'm rooting for. I enjoyed seeing a softer side of King when he recounted his story about Max, but nothing was gained by having her be his kid over his little sister. And I don't understand how he was naive for the end scene. Why did Doe need to have a kid, and how did that not come up on the Google search? There was just so much thrown into this story, maybe for the shock value, but it was just too much. And then nothing was every really explained, so you just end up with more questions than answers. My last issue is with the whole rape scene and the events that followed it. Never use rape as a plot device. Just don't. Especially if you aren't going to handle it with the gravity it deserves. The only person who even acknowledges for one second that Doe was raped was King. Did he try and comfort her? No, but he probably didn't need to, since Doe seemed totally fine. She doesn't even mention it. At all. I know Preppy's death was supposed to be tragic and all, but really. She had no problem with being woken up with amorous attentions from King. Honestly, I want to say that the rape scene was added in last minute, after Frazier had already finished writing the end of the novel. It was unnecessary, poorly handled, and it was just the disappointment cherry on a frustration sundae.

I mean King, not King... but this book 'King'.King is a deranged psychopath, a tattoo artist, an ex-convict, a felon and overall a fearsome mofo.Preppy is King's wacko sidekick who fancy bow-tie and suspender. I love his oddball personality, his vulgar and crude mouth and his wacky charm.Doe as in Jane Doe. This poor girl suffered memory lost and can't even find a scrape of food to feed herself. Not sure whether she is lucky or unlucky when she stumble upon King, in all his menacing glory."I didn't dream about him. Because King wasn't a dream. He was a nightmare."Right from the beginning, I fell for King and Preppy's bromance. When Doe came into the picture and King getting possessive of her, they are like one big messed up family.King is a true anti-hero. He make me shiver not in a good way with his capability for violence. But at the same time make me melt for him when he did something that resemble a normal human. King is a walking contradiction. He seems to be a complex man who is neither good nor evil. He makes you want to hate him and love him at the same time. He evoked all sorts of complicated feelings in me. I wanted to smack him one too many times. Honestly, there is too much wrong with him, but there is an underlying goodness in him too."I think you are the most stubborn, overbearing, anger inducing, obnoxious, complicated, and beautiful man that has ever lived."I like Doe's sass. She tends to have verbal diarrhea and being blunt at inappropriate moment without looking ridiculous. I can't imagine waking up and not knowing who I am. I understand her dilemma and struggle to preserve the little part of herself. Two of them together gave me a serious case of lady's blue balls. Oh, the angst. When I think of it, it is ridiculous that they have so much to fight about without even slepting each other yet. King's feelings that ran hot and cold all the time drove Doe and me crazy."Most of the time I don't know if you want to kill me or f@ck me!"I don't consider this a dark read, but definitely very vulgar, crude and violent. It also filled with a ton of dark humor that make me burst into laughter when I'm not supposed to.This book gave me an unique plot with a complex hero, a heroine with a clean slate of mind and a true friend in Preppy. I'm rooting for each and everyone of them. We have some violence with the local MC gang and a person close to King that he had to save. Then we also got a big dose of heart wrenching moment that simply gut you. The cliffhanger make me extremely worried for my favorite characters. What will happen to them?I believe it might comes down to Doe. She might be the biggest wildcard in the story. Thank goodness we already have a date for the second part of the story, Tyrant. It make the wait bearable.

Frazier5/5 stars*I received an Advanced Copy in exchange for an honest review.*King is a notorious career criminal who was just released from prison and just can’t seem to get his head on straight. He’s done time before, but this is the longest stretch, and he’s always been able to get straight, something is different now it makes him even more dangerous. He’s known as King of the Causeway and he runs the county, everyone answers to him. His best friend and business partner, Preppy, has kept their criminal enterprise running while King was imprisoned.Doe has no memory. She woke up in a hospital after being brutally beaten & left for dead. But when filing a police report, she found that there were no missing persons reports matching her description and neither were her fingerprints on file. She had no one that missed her enough to search for her. She didn’t know anything about her past; not where she was from, who she was or even her name. She also has nowhere to go.Doe & King meet at his welcome home party where she is looking for a safe place to sleep & some food. But things take a turn for the worst and Doe becomes King’s property, his prisoner and is not allowed to leave his house. She may not know anything about herself, but she knows that she wants her freedom. Even though King is a dangerous man who could end her life just as easily, he also offers her safety & protection…at least temporarily. They are both confused about the feelings that begin to develop and neither are really sure about how to act on them because King has never had a relationship and Doe has a blank slate. But whatever they are building is never on completely solid ground because of Doe’s past & King’s future. Especially if they come to a head. This book does end on a cliffhanger, but the second part will be released in August. I’ll be waiting…not so patiently!

Stories from History's Dust Bin is a 3-volume set of historical vignettes, each volume containing over 120 short stories, each of which can be read in fifteen minutes or less. The books make perfect companions for travel, relaxing near the pool, great substitutes for in-flight magazines, and ideal for those times when you're stuck in the doctor's waiting room. The books feature the unusual, such as the story of Mary Toft who, in 1726, had a lot of folks, including members of King George's court, convinced she had given birth to nine rabbits; and the story of Franz Haydn, the Father of Music, whose head was stolen after his death in 1809, and remained so for 145 years before being reunited with its body, and the story about Larry Walters, who in 1982, "slipped the surly bonds of earth," in a Sears & Roebuck lawn chair, to which were affixed 45 army surplus helium balloons. After leveling off, two pilots (TWA & Delta) radioed the Long Beach, California, tower that a guy in a lawn chair had just smiled and waved to them at 16,000 feet. Those are but three of the 366 stories contained in the set.

Paula Hickford’s first book, Lavender Girl is a bright and inspiring novel, following the new friendship between Elizabeth Bailey, 60, and Tamika Asiedu, 10, as they come to terms with losing family and find a way to cope with life after loss together.

Ever since her husband died, Liz has been alone in an empty house. Her only son hardly bothers with her, she rarely sees her grandchildren, and her best friend has left the neighbourhood. Now retired, she has nothing but housework to keep her occupied and everything in the house is immaculate, save for the tangled and overgrown garden which was once her husband’s pride and joy.

Life begins to change when a removal van pulls up next door, and Monica and Tamika move in. Monica is stressed and over-worked and Tamika is a sad little girl. Liz initially hears nothing but fighting from next door, but reluctantly gets involved in their lives when one cold, wet evening in early January, she notices Tamika waiting outside in the rain for Monica to get home. Liz invites her in and as the two of them get to know one another, their friendship becomes the catalyst that changes all of their lives for the better.

Reason to Hope is a true story of a young woman born into the privileged life of a white, middle class family in South Africa at the height of apartheid.

Despite having a bright future with a promising career and prospects of marriage, she decides to forsake the freedoms, comforts, and pleasures of this world to follow God in poverty, chastity, and obedience – for the salvation of souls – inspired by the message of Fatima of 1917.

Eventually, after a convoluted journey taking her across continents, she would become a temporary professed sister in the Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

Emotional, thoughtful, and spiritually enlightening, Reason to Hope describes the pivotal moments of Amanda's life with honesty and openness. With humility she shows the reader what she believes and why – even all these years later.

This book is perfect for those who are curious about faith, religious life, spirituality, Mother Teresa, Catholicism or even just a different side of life that is rarely portrayed in our modern times. Its call to hope is an inspiration for all.

I would recommend Miss Peter's book to anyone By Settimo Figlio I was very excited to read Amanda Peter's book having also had experience in the religious life. Amanda writes her experiences with an honesty that is deeply rooted in her faith - a faith she had not abandoned. It is delightful to read a memoir where the person who has gone through the mills comes out whole and unscathed. Too many memoirs of ex-nuns and priests usually see the writer taking an adverse path upon leaving, and perhaps rightfully so. I would recommend Miss Peter's book to anyone, especially to get a nice view of Mother Teresa and how she interacted with her sisters and the poor. I finished the book inspired.

He seems more interested in eating with his wife and room service rather than eating with the team. A bit repetitive as to why the ashes were lost rather than admitting England was a better team. Blames "doctoring " of the pitch as if this is not done in Australia.

The United States Navy’s Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training is some of the toughest military training in the world. In this behind-the-scenes account, readers join New York Times bestselling author Stephen Templin in his journey as a trainee in Class 144. Templin and his classmates endure Hell Week: five-and-a-half days of swimming, hallucinating, enduring frequent hypothermia, running more than two hundred miles, and doing over twenty hours per day of extreme physical training—having slept only four hours total for the week. After Hell Week, they face more challenges. These experiences, Steve’s insights into some of the psychology needed to overcome seemingly impossible challenges, teamwork, and an unexpected conclusion, make this a memorable adventure. Praise for Stephen Templin and SEAL Training Class 144 “Reveals an intimate look at the rigorous training.” -Nick Carbone, Time “Great to relive, remember, cringe, and laugh over so many of those memories. Steve does an exceptional job of bringing key aspects of BUD/S training to life in an eloquent, realistic, humorous, and thought-provoking manner. Whether you serve a day of your life in a military uniform or not, the lessons he conveys from his time in SEAL training are valuable, life-learning insights for all.” -Mark Beder, BUD/S Class 144 Leader, SEAL Assault Team Leader/Lieutenant Commander (Veteran) “When I read SEAL Training Class 144, I thought I was doing it again—oh, hell. It was like watching a movie—I remembered everything. I think readers will be hooked and love it. Good job, Fire Team Templin!” -José Duque, BUD/S Class 144 Honor Man, La Infanteria de Marina (Retired)

By Vadermedic As a former Naval Air crewman and Rescue Swimmer, I thoroughly enjoyed the personal accounts regarding Stephen Templin's training to become a Navy SEAL. His writing is to the point and gritty, helping the reader imagine, if possible, the rigors of BUDS training. I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in Special Warfare as it will provide a realistic image of the mental fortitude and physical strength required to complete the training. I also suggest this to anyone like me, middle age, working hard to stay physically fit while balancing family and work, to help stay motivated and free of any pity party material.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great read about BUDS and how to overcome any obstacle By Gregory Lynn I found it refreshing to read a first-hand account of what BUDS training was like for a young man. The book is organized in an interesting fashion with some very brief chapters, but I felt the structure matched the context of the story well. The chapters organize really as lessons. I had previously watched videos of the Navy SEALs in BUDS and found new information in this narrative along with reinforcement of other points. This is not a book about the military, this is about one individual's journey through what is the hardest screening mechanism on the planet. I think it's a must read for anyone who wants to know more about mental attitude, perception, teamwork and introspection. Well done.

By Kindle Customer Reality check ahead from food, obstacles, commanders, trainers, wet sand, eating bugs, tests to Congratulations Seal!Navy Seals are so intriguing. When you hear the words, you picture *cue music* big, strong, tough men, faces painted with black grease, bodies carrying survival and assorted weapons of defense, always on a mission at anytime, anywhere, any place. Whatever the assignment, it will be completed by the extraordinary ones. Our soldiers of the night. *end music*This book is an easy and interesting read. You may feel scared, laugh a lot and bugs and wet sand...there's a lot. Mean and nice people playing their parts to help keep the soldiers from hurting themselves. BUD/S Training.....wow!All of us know that all of these men go through years of extreme training to earn this right. They are the best of the best, brothers for life, no matter what. We are so busy putting them on a pedestal that they deserve, lest we forget that each member is also a person, just like you and I. We do not consider each of their personal struggles and sacrifices to get that designation. We don't think about them crying or suffering from loss, from individual pain. *enter Rambo*Stephen Templin gives us a truly personal view of what and how a soldier becomes a Navy Seal. To be frank, I never thought about the process as much as the result. There are some god awful times, sad times and times you will bust a gut. In a way, it reminds me of being in school, which I guess it is. After reading this book, I have even more respect for Navy Seals for the fight they face on a personal level, for their pain, for their bruises, for their extreme sacrifices, their worn out bodies, their nausea, their vomitting, the days they have to stay awake, the tests they take, their discipline, their frustration and their tears. What is amazing is that people who never met before and those you have, form and bond in a comraderie and support from each other to get through every day better than the one before. The strength is takes mentally, physically, emotionally and every other -ally.I really enjoyed Stephen Templin pulling us into his story so we can see exactly what it takes and what it means to want something so bad, to be better than the rest, to want to give up yet to keep going, to struggle, to daily keep your fingers and head away from ringing the bell which says I've had enough, to be tired and hungry and grateful for a little sleep in wet sand and an astronauts pouch of food. There is also a poignant life lesson to us all. Sometimes, we don't really know what we want or are seeking in life. Expectations can make and break you. If you really want something, then son go for it balls to the wall. Never give up. Most importantly, many take their days for granted having no clue what others go through in order for you to have this safe feeling, this life. Before you pass judgment, speculate or talk about our military and special forces, you better damn well know what they do for you and each one of us. Trust me. Not every problem, battle or war is covered by CNN. You know why? Because of our protectors who believe in and love this country and all of us. Are you willing to give up your life and tear yourself apart for strangers to live a safe and happy life? Some of you have and do.Thank you Stephen for another great book. I will keep this to remind me that at the basic level, we are all human. Never forget that. To become a Navy Seal is an honor and a very, in-depth process. Only the skilled few are ever meant to get through. And a few only get through. If you are not heart and soul serious about serving your country, please stay home. If you know you can do this heart, body and soul, Stephen guides you through from beginning to end. Good luck to every foot touching that sacred and revered training ground. Stay strong because you are in for one hell of a ride. To be the best of the best, you have to earn it. By the time you get from the front to the end of this book, you will know for sure if this is your calling. If I were younger and in tip top shape, I would have run out and signed up for sure. This book pumped me up, but then, wore me out!Personally, from this readers heart, I thank you everyday for the things we never hear about because you do what needs to be done, period. I love my country and the men and women who protect it everyday with their lives. My son and his best friend signed up and will leave next year. Thank you, Stephen for explaining the process in real life terms. To them and all our military, be safe and Thank you!And as Stephen would say, HOOYAH! He loves to hear from you so please leave a constructive review. We both thank you in advance!

By bbutton Richard Coles is a blend of different faces: celebrity who appears on television at award shows and quiz shows, C of E vicar who holds the hands of the elderly and listens to their stories, faithful partner, fond dachshund owner, lover of fine music and literature. In this frank autobiography, he allows us to look beneath those faces and reveals his less-than-conventional past. From shy teen to partying pop star who experienced all the sex and drugs the music industry can offer, Coles is frank about his past and his journey to a new life of service in the Church.

3 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An honest unmasking of previous pomposity By Mr. D. P. Jay I’ve met Fr. Coles twice, before he was ordained, and thought he was pompous and snobby. I read this book too quickly and felt sad when there was no more to read (a sequel, please?) and I now realise that his outward manner was hiding insecurity so I have warmed to him. Pun intended, ‘never judge a book by its cover.’ (Though, literally, the cover is an unsuccessful attempt to imitate Gilbert and George – or, less likely, Pierre et Gilles.)As a teenager ambling along the sea front on a Sunday night, I remember the Salvation Army starting up around 8.00 and people giving their personal testimony. One was a prostitute with a drug habit until she got converted. I always felt they were more interesting before they got God. This book is written in that style. However, the absorbing, non-pious bits are quite a large section which deals with the Communards and Red Wedge. There is a harrowing section about the era of AIDS called ‘Auntie Ada’. It includes a good funeral conducted by the Salvation Army where there is no coy cover up of gayness nor the cause of the death – which was rare back then. A poignant account of another funeral: coffin carried by friends who did not have much to lift by the time the virus had finished with him. However, there is much that is life-affirming in the recounting of AIDS stories, such as the real goodness of so many people.Someone in my book group is thinking of suggesting this book for one of our future meetings. I wondered whether some people might be put off my the amount of religion but it’s not until page 197 (of a total of 278 pages) that it starts in earnest and, even then, there are plenty of other topics like being a radio presenter.Pete Bennett of Big Brother fame, gets a mention as he was bought by his mother on one of their tours. The author’s childhood is revealing. At age 6 he had a reading age of 12 and his mother told him off for showing off. He was an accomplished liar and referred to as a ‘peculiar little boy.’ He was the last to be chosen for team games, like me, and, also like me, had plaster busts of Bach and Beethoven.Like me, he stayed up late at night until into his forties. As a choirboy, he sang canticles by Dyson, Stanford and Noble which were also in our repertoire when I was in a choir. His choirmaster insisted that the Oxford Easy Anthem book was hidden behind a cover so that the word ‘easy’ wasn’t on display.I think I was an atheist before he was. It seems to be a good rehearsal for doing theology later on. Indeed, people who believe in everything tend to make mediocre theologians. He has good taste in men, judging by the photo of Matthew. (Though his first sex was late, at age eighteen)He mentions Jennings and Darbishire, of whom I had never heard, which shows that he’s more middle class than me.When he is warned that masturbation can make you go blind, his eyesight is so poor that he decides to risk it.There are various allusions to Cranmer’s Book of Common Prayer (a couple didn’t simply get married, they were ‘joined together in Holy matrimony.) and the King James Bible (her son was ‘not as other men are’) throughout, which will probably be lost to younger readers. There’s a few good literary allusions, like ‘feasting with panthers’ (Oscar Wilde, for those who don’t recognise the phrase.) And ‘the melancholy, long, withdrawing roar (of Communism.) - Matthew Arnold.I loved this account of a drag queen nicking a vacuum cleaner.I had to look up ‘Mivvi’ – ice lolly. Not posh, though I later had to look up croque-en-bouche = a French dessert consisting of choux pastry balls piled into a cone and bound with threads of caramel. I’d never heard of Boden but I now know that it is a brand name for a certain type of clothing. He narrowly missed the pleasure boat Marchionness, which sank, because of a serious water leak in his flat. His experience of High Mass at S. Alban’s Holborn is almost exactly the same as mine, though I was an adolescent in a small town anglo-catholic church when I had mine. The elevation of the consecrated host, by sacred ministers wearing damask vestments, surrounded by clouds of incense and attended to by torchbearers is wonderful for those of us who love drama. It was John Wesley who said that Holy Communion was ‘a converting ordinance’ though he was only used to Cranmer’s rite conducted from the north end of the table. I’m not sure that Coles is right to describe it as a ‘protestant’ conversion, not least because it was a shared experience in community rather than an individual surrender in a private room or a ‘going forward’ at some evangelistic rally. Some people that I know personally feature. The diligent master of ceremonies at S. Alban’s is remarkably patient despite his perfectionism. (And I loved this bit: On Palm Sunday, which marks the beginning of the week that culminates with Easter, there was a procession round the parish, everyone carrying palm crosses as a reminder of Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Our triumphal progress round Holborn was led by the Master of Ceremonies, who used a special stick to indicate piles of dog s*** imperilling our seemly progress.) Sara Maitland is exactly the sort of person to point Coles in the right direction (once she has stopped talking) and Fr. Gaskell has been a blessing to countless numbers of people.I am not sure I liked his ‘outing’ of some gay clergy (unless they were already out and/or had given him permission to do so. Coles tells his own story built I am not so sure that he should tell stories that belong to others.I have an atheist friend who regularly goes on retreat to Buckfast Abbey and who will scream with laughter when I tell him that it is nicknamed, because of its business acumen, ‘Fastbuck Abbey. The recent synod on the family, which voted against welcoming homosexuals into the church, will lead to a perpetuation of his experience in confession of a priest focussing on homosexual ‘genital acts’ rather than in helping him ‘to be more attentive, more forbearing, more clear-sighted, more just, more loving, in my relationships with other people’.I think that we Anglicans do confession better – maybe because there are fewer punters so we can take more time on it and go into more depth than just a shopping list of misdemeanours.I was aware that Ephesians was probably not written by S. Paul but not that is it probably not an epistle, nor that it wasn’t meant for Ephesus. Now that I think about it, it lacks the traditional salutations and some manuscripts omit reference to that city.I didn’t know there was a gay porn star called Harry Enfield in addition to the bloke on the telly.Coles was unfortunate in having a migraine at his selection conference (he describes the procedure by which would-be ordinands are screened very well) and a heavy cold just before his ordination. His descriptions of Mirfield, especially during Holy Week, brought back fond memories for me, though I don’t think Peter Allen would like to be described as ‘short and silky’. I was sad to see that a coterie choose ‘names in religion’ (drag names) for new students. I thought that only happened at St. Stephen’s House, Oxford. Same with alcohol – but now I can see why Coles thought that a cocktail cabinet was essential equipment for a seminarian.I can better his account of a student and guest noisily having sex on Good Friday. When I was there, some years previously, a couple had sex on a single bed on the guest wing. The legs collapsed and the bed crashed on to the stone floor during the greater silence before the Easter Vigil and the whole wing was awake.I had forgotten how liturgically fussy the place was, where errors of choreography or speech/singing were jumped on. I remember the late Brother Dunstan interjecting, ‘That’s the wrong reading’. And it’s not as if anyone was going to preach on the text during a weekday evensong.I had an interesting interlude finding about what a Dieux du Stade calendar was.His feelings about Uganda and the Anglican Communion are a lesson for some of us. Despite Uganda’s vilification of may people , the Mirfield fathers vigorously fought. (I remember reading, in the 1960s) about the boy Hugh Masekela getting a trumpet from Fr. Trevor Huddleston and hadn’t realised he was still alive. Reading about Steve Biko’s widow was also good. So maybe the Communion is worth preserving after all.)Coles was the first to visit the vestment sellers setting up stalls in the college. Why doesn’t that surprise me?After an unsuccessful religious broadcast, someone denounced Coles as ‘the worst thing to happen to Christendom since Charles Darwin.’ That’s very far from the mark since a friend of mine who works in schools says that the only priest that most of the kids approve of is Richard Coles. Whither mission to a new generation if clergy like him are to be demonised? The C of E‘s most vociferous killjoys, a group ironically called ‘Reform’ have stated, ‘The promiscuous behaviour, it seems, was not seen as sin leading to lostness from which he needed salvation, but a positive part of Coles’ spiritual journey, affirming him as a good and attractive person, from where he felt able to move towards God to satisfy the hunger in his soul. He says this: “Do I think it was consistent with a Christian calling? No. We are called upon to be faithful. But it was extremely healing for me. Would I repudiate it? No…I can’t.”….. A much more serious problem is the ‘Gospel’ he is promoting, whereby sexual excess liberates the soul and affirms the believer in his or her identity and self worth, leading to closer encounter with God and eventual settling into domestic “faithfulness”. Some are no doubt thinking that this Gospel could become popular and even arrest the decline of the C of E, asking why we haven’t thought of it before. Will Church leaders, ‘faithful’ in the true sense of the word, dare to speak and act against what is an ancient and destructive heresy?Well, the ‘destructive heresy’ is that promoted by Reform – they seem completely unaware of the spiritual classics’ take on desire. They are also aware of the lives of the great saints. Reform, need to repent of the false god, which is an idol that they have created in its own image. There are a few errors in memory – Gay Sweatshop did not precede but succeeded Consenting Adults. Gay News was monthly, not weekly.Compline does not come from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. Its English form is from the ‘deposited book’ of 1928I wish there was an index. I wanted to find mention of bassist David Renwick (pp. 81, 104)The book ends with his diaconal ordination with a lovely anecdote: Nicky, vicar of the church down on the estate, where lives could be as rough as any lives anywhere. … told me that the bishop had been recently to confirm some of her kids and asked them before the service if they had any questions. There was silence, apart from one girl who said, 'I've nicked this top from me nan, but do you think it shows too much tit for church?'A wonderful book that made me reflect upon my own life; a life and experiences similar in some ways and different in others. I was moved to tears after reading some chapters and one of those who rarely ‘allows’ tears.

So many great stories about sleepovers, tree-climbing, squirting pickles, jackhammers and shirtless, pasty, mumbling mental patients. It was a perfect, late-November "Welcome Home" for us both!

I'm not a big fan of being told what to do and disagreed with the rules contained in this book. Why do I have to conform to the authors rules on how pages are laid out? If I want to start on page 42 and then go to 13, then the book should conform to me. Some may say that doesn't make sense but why does anything have to make sense. I live my life on nonsense and do what I want. It works for me and sometimes I get lucky and others follow in the tangled web I weave. Anyways, now looking for an assistant hydration coach for my staff. If your kids a recruit hit me up and we may be able to work something out.

By SCT I don't mean to offend- especially since writing and publishing a book takes a lot of time, energy and bravery. HOWEVER, this was really just so insulting as a female reader. I am not a die hard feminist, prude, or bitter female. I am an educated woman who loves Science Fiction. The female characters in this book are so incredibly pathetic. All of them more busty and beautiful than the next and really are just a bunch of whores. Yeah, yeah, it is mentioned SO MANY times in the book how "attitudes towards sex have changed in the future." How convenient. I have a really hard time with the fact that there are so many more women than men, and all they want to do is screw the main character. No one is grieving the loss of their families, homes, friends. They "play fight" over who gets to have sex with Jake each night and tease each other afterwards. Seriously? It is a joke and I so wish I did not waste my time finishing this book- Unfortunately, I was committed to it.Besides all of that, everything was just so perfect. None of the main characters died, everyone good wins, there's no food, water shortage- Wonderful gourmet meals made by underground future robots...oh yes and the constantly horny young (some underage) females. Like a bad futuristic version of "The Bachelor." I felt like I was reading some story written by one of my puberty ridden, male, high school students.

By HeroFan The Good, The Bad, What The Frak??The good:- I loved the research the writer was willing to do with regards to technology, military and social custom changes. The premise of the book is past dude slept into the far future. Basically a Buck Rogers classic story. And the character has to contend with technological and societal changes of the future. I liked the amount of work the writer put into making his military officer believable and the social norms that have changed over times as well. Without making it so weird and different that we couldn’t relate to the story. This reminds me a lot of Empire From The Ashes by David Weber. In that book the MC discovers ancient ADVANCED tech that gives him an edge over the modern world and he uses it to help his planet overcome an alien threat. And Mr. Lamb evokes that same feeling when I read his novel. Thanks!-the book is written for adults over 18. So be warned. But tastefully done so. Also be warned, though the MC is a gentleman, he is still a man. I liked how the writer can blend the story and backgrounds to make the relationships plausible. The bad:- A few typo at the later chapters. It’s as if the editor, whoever that is, kind of slacked off and missed a few words here and there as it got closer to the end of the book. BUT that didn’t distract me from the enjoyment of the book. (THAT will be the What the Frak part)- The MC had FEW challenges in the first ¾ of the book. Without any major spoilers, that was kind of annoying. 1 man, with a good crew, will still have a TON of challenges to his control and power. Yet..I didn’t get any of that. Now for the What The Frak??:(I will try to avoid spoilers…but…my BIGGEST complaint lies with a major plot point...so be warned.)- If the main villains that devastated the world had a weakness that was so deadly, why didn’t they have shielding against it? I know that if kryptonite is my ONE weakness, if I was nigh invulnerable, I’d be wearing something / anything to prevent or keep kryptonite away. The villains had that one weakness. Yet they didn’t protect themselves from such a weakness. Heck they didn’t even KNOW that they had such a common weakness. Which again is odd, given they are an OLD group of villains. No it was not earth germs, but very close.- The villains didn’t have anti - aircraft missiles. They had missiles for attacking planets and yet for a militaristic villain they didn’t seem prepared for large ship to small ship combat? Wow total disbelief breaker there for me. That was such a huge hole in their ship defenses it cried story logic hole to me.These last two points are why I didn’t give it a 5 star rating. 4 was because it was such an AWESOME start…but left me puttering in the last quarter. If Mr. Lamb can justifiable and logically explain why those to big holes exist, I’ll give him a 5 next time. All the same, I’ll read the next book. Because I am hooked and do want to know.Mr. Lamb: You write. I will keep Kindle Unlimited to read it.

17 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Interesting story, virtually no editing, elementary errors By Ted from Florida The story has held my attention for several hours - kudos on that. I'm at the point where the girls have informed Jake of 'the arrangements'.The author failed fifth grade English and never took a remedial class. He has no concept of the difference between plural and possessive - and lord help us if the word is both plural and possessive. Affect and effect problems. Author did not use spell- or grammar-check on his word processor, or all the instances of missing commas and dashes would have been eliminated.A story is like a music composition, it has rhythm and meter, pauses and flow. The written word has those same attributes- as if the tribal storyteller is speaking to us around the campfire, thrilling us with another story that takes us out of our mundane surroundings and transports us to other times and places. Puntuation is the breaths taken while he speaks - the dramatic pause before the next revelation in the progressing tale is told.To screw up the punctuation as badly as this and many (most) other e-book authors do, is like hearing the first day of sixth-grade band practice when expecting to hear the London Philharmonic. This work was not proofread, nor is there any evidence it was beta-read or edited in any way. I see a trend in the Kindle books I've read over the past year that indicates the authors are putting their wares on the market for sale in a half-assed ill-prepared manner. We, as buyers, must demand more of an effort from them, or settle for mediocrity in our literary choices - as well as a decline in the care and useage of the English language in the written word. The spoken word is already taking a beating.

By SarahWeinisch This is a wonderful mixture of a part of American history, as well as the personal history of one family, the Henderson's. This book has a little something for everyone!
