The iconic, bestselling author delivers her first book in ten years–and the sequel to the groundbreaking novel, Fear of Flying.

Fear of Dying is a hilarious, heart wrenching, and beautifully told story about what happens when one woman steps reluctantly into the afternoon of life. Vanessa Wonderman is a gorgeous former actress in her 60's who finds herself balancing between her dying parents, her aging husband and her beloved, pregnant daughter. Although Vanessa considers herself "a happily married woman," the lack of sex in her life makes her feel as if she's losing something too valuable to ignore. So she places an ad for sex on a site called Zipless.com and the life she knew begins to unravel. With the help and counsel of her best friend, Isadora Wing, Vanessa navigates the phishers and pishers, and starts to question if what she's looking for might be close at hand after all.

Fear of Dying is a daring and delightful look at what it really takes to be human and female in the 21st century. Wildly funny and searingly honest, this is a book for everyone who has ever been shaken and changed by love.

Review

Praise for Fear of Dying

“Fear of Dying proves Erica Jong’s sustained relevancy.” ―The Globe and Mail

“(Jong) won me over with her honesty, humor and passion…as a writer she still has a lot to say.” ―The Guardian

“Flashy, flip, and hilarious as well as smart and wise…Jong has created such an extraordinary direct and intimate narrative voice, one almost forgets that this bravura performance is a work of fiction. Jong is a beacon for several generations of readers, and her first novel in more than a decade will garner much excitement.” ―Booklist (starred review)

“From the start, Jong has surged to the front, leading Baby Boomers where they fear to tread…Even in her 70s, Jong remains the brash, randy adventurer whose work curs of the world may piss on, but who isn’t about to let that stop her.” ―The Atlantic

“Jong’s writing style is quirky and engaging, layering complex themes in a story that will make readers laugh and reflect.” –RT Book Reviews (four stars)

“Fear of Dying is the perfect, spirited, funny bookend to Erica Jong’s classic, Fear of Flying. In this lighthearted, sexy, and wise romp of a novel, Jong explores some deep truths about aging, family, love, and marriage after sixty. This novel is a wonderful, readable blend of entertainment and wisdom. I loved it!” –Susan Cheever, bestselling author of Home Before Dark

“Fear of Dying by Erica Jong is hysterical and touchinh, compelling and heartbreaking, and makes me want even more to live joyfully―forever! Jong’s writing rocks into your fantasies, your bed, and your brain. I love this book!” –Judy Collins, singer, writer, and survivor of the sixties

“Erica Jong has written a whip-smart, insightful, hilarious and ridiculously relatable new novel, Fear of Dying. In her latest novel, Jong revisits and renovates her old haunts. Destined to be called an instant classic, I could not put this stunning book down. In 1973, Fear of Flying was the book we needed, now the book we need is Fear of Dying.”―Julie Klam, bestselling author of Friendkeeping and You Had Me at Woof

“Erica Jong fans, rejoice! Her new novel, the cleverly and aptly titled Fear of Dying, is a truth-teller's dream. In it, Jong and her alter egos face life's most difficult challenges, head on and all at once. As the great poet William Butler Yeats wrote, "the only two things worth writing about are sex and death," and in Fear of Dying, Jong takes on both. Along the way, she also tells the story of a marriage that grows happier despite all. This wise book, written in prose gorgeous enough to make one swoon, will delight and enrich the lives of everyone who reads it.” –Rosemary Daniell, award-winning author of Secrets of the Zona Rosa: How Writing (and Sisterhood) Can Change Women’s Lives

"How Erica is able to deal with all these sensitive issues and still make the book funny is amazing. I loved reading it.” –Woody Allen

“Erica Jong has done it again! Fear of Dying is a big, bawdy, beautifully-written romp through online hookups, female friendships, children grappling with adulthood and parents negotiating with death. Fear of Dying is a big, warm-hearted, generous book that will satisfy Jong's longtime fans and delight her new readers.” –Jennifer Weiner, bestselling author of Who Do You Love

"Moving and deeply poetic, Fear of Dying is a compelling novel that truly understands the process of aging. With astonishing images on every page, Erica Jong gives us a veiled spiritual autobiography with an unstoppable quality, a narrative momentum that held me from first to last as it seamlessly unfolds from Jong's previous work, yet with sharp new edge, giving us a wise book, a book to savor." –Jay Parini, author of The Last Station and Why Poetry Matters

About the Author Erica Jong is a poet, novelist, and essayist, best known for her eight New York Times bestselling novels, including Fear of Flying (which has sold 27 million copies in forty languages) and Fear of Fifty. Intelligent, literary novel -- "Fear is a waste of life" By Kathy Cunningham I was 21-years-old when Erica Jong's FEAR OF FLYING was published, and I remember being mesmerized by the way she wrote about sex. This was 1973, and while the woman's movement was definitely going strong, female sexuality was still something mysterious and not totally acceptable to talk about. But Jong's narrator, Isadora Wing, longed for what she called the "zipless ****," a spontaneous sexual encounter with a nameless stranger that would be pure experience without attachments, strings, or obligations. And now, over four decades later, Jong revisits Isadora's world in FEAR OF DYING, which focuses on the vast changes in women's lives as we grow old and face our own mortality. This time, the narrator is 60-year-old Vanessa Wonderman, a "darling friend" of Isadora's who is dealing with her aging parents, her 85-year-old husband, and a beloved standard poodle also nearing his end. The story Vanessa tells is somber and difficult, but also uplifting and affirming in surprising ways. I'm just a few years older than Vanessa, and I totally identify with her struggles to deal with her dying parents, her fears about her husband's health issues, and her oddly beautiful attachment to her poodle Belinda. It's just the sex talk that doesn't quite work for me this time around. And there's lot of it!The one thing I remember most about FEAR OF FLYING was what happened when Isadora finally found herself in a position to experience the "zipless ****." Instead of leaping into it with open arms, she rebuffed the stranger's advances, realizing only much later that she had missed her chance. In FEAR OF DYING, Vanessa is a former soap opera actress who has had many zipless experiences, as well as countless "zipped-up" ones. She's been married several times, had an abundance of lovers, and sees herself as a sexually free woman. She's also super wealthy, as is her billionaire husband. But as she watches her parents grow weaker and weaker in their final months of life, it's sex she hopes will save her from the "fear of dying." She runs an ad on a fantasy sex website. She contacts former lovers. What does she want, Jong asks? "I wanted sex to prove that I would never die," Vanessa says.Like Vanessa and Isadora (and like Erica Jong), I've changed a lot in the past 40-plus years. What titillated and intrigued me in 1973 doesn't quite do the same today. I, too, am dealing with the end of my parents' lives. Like Vanessa's Asher, my own husband has health issues that threaten to cut short his life. And my own beloved cat (like Vanessa's dog, Belinda) is showing signs that her life, too, may be nearing its end. It's all very hard, and very real, and very much a part of all of our lives. But I can't quite identify with Vanessa's delight in sexual dalliances, her love of sexually charged words I can't imagine using in casual speech, or her conviction that through orgasm she can immunize herself against death. The novel's first line is, "I used to love the power I had over men," which is all about sex. By the end, however, Vanessa realizes that "We give [sex] much more power than it perhaps deserves."I loved parts of FEAR OF DYING, because it spoke to me of things I, myself, am pondering these days. What gives us purpose? How can we forgive ourselves our shortcomings? How can we forgive those who have hurt us? And how can we face the end of life, when we're never quite sure what living is in the first place? As Vanessa finally says, "Death is fearlessness. It's the anticipation of our dying that's the problem." In some ways, Vanessa begins this novel believing that life is a huge joke, with death as its ultimate punch line. She longs for sex as a means of anesthetizing herself against the punch in the gut she knows will eventually come. But she learns pretty much the same thing her friend Isadora did years before - life and death are the same thing. The very act of living is also the act of dying, since every step we take, every move we make, brings us that much closer to the end. It's not sex that ends up saving Vanessa, but living. "Don't be afraid," Jong tells us. "Fear is a waste of life." And that is something we can all celebrate. This is an intelligent and literary novel with a believable and identifiable protagonist. She may be a bit more sexually super-charged than many of us in our sixties, but her journey is in many ways all of ours. I do recommend FEAR OF DYING.

It wasn't in my preferred genres - horror or science fiction - but just skimming a few pages made it a must buy. Jong's style - brilliant, witty, laugh-out-loud funny - was inspiring to a kid who aimed to be a writer when she grew up. (It also taught me, the ultimate innocent, a lot about sex. which was pretty enthralling in itself.) Honestly, I credit Jong in part with turning me into the character-driven (horror) writer I am today. So, while Fear of Dying is absolutely not what I normally read, I couldn't wait to crack it. I loved it almost as much as the original. Jong's style is just as beautiful and inspirational now as it was way back when. Instead of Isadora Wing, the protagonist is a feisty friend of hers, Vanessa Wonderman. Vanessa is sixty and feeling time creep up on her as she deals with her older husband's health problems, her aging parents, and her aging poodle. Everything is changing for her and she can't turn time back. The book is about coping with the changes that come with aging and its almost as instructive to me now as it was when I was learning about what it meant to become a young adult woman. Vanessa sees sex as something that can keep her young and this struck me as, well, odd, but different strokes... In a way, it's a frightening book because it deals so much with endings and death, yet it is also very uplifting. Primarily, it made me glad that I married a man my own age, but it also made me think about things I really don't care to consider... but that I should. The story, despite its serious nature, made me smile and laugh. It's a terrific book, especially if you're on the far side of forty.

Donnelly While I identify with Vanessa's stage of life, I don't agree with her nor do I like her.Why does Jong need to equate feminism with self-centeredness, a lack of loyalty and faithfulness in relationships and a true lack of personal and moral character?Vanessa is facing much of what I faced over the last decade. Parents in crisis. Death. Complex relationships with siblings. How does she react? She seeks refuge in meaningless sex through a website, Zipless--a reprise of the idea of sex with no strings attached brought into light in Jong's breakthrough novel, Fear of Flying. While Vanessa may look like she has "everything" -- money, fame (from her former days as a soap opera star), a loving husband -- she still feels that her life is somehow unfulfilled. Perhaps it's the panic she feels as she watches her parents slip into dementia and, finally, death. Or the petty squabbling over the family business that one of her siblings 'inherited'. Or maybe it's the sadness she felt in losing her dog. Whatever the case, she completely disregards her marriage and goes on a quest to fill the void via these meaningless sexual encounters. What is it that causes people to believe it's okay to betray the ones we love? Vanessa betrays her husband with little guilt. She betrays friend Isadora Wing. And when she finally realizes that the thing she most wanted was staring her in the face the entire time...I feel like she didn't deserve it.I have to say that Jong's writing has MUCH improved over the years. Fear of Flying may have been a blockbuster, but the constant soul-searching asides had me skipping pages and pages just to get through the story. Fear of Dying made me feel more in tune with Vanessa's story than I did Isadora's in Fear of Flying. I flew through this book, and the way Jong wove the characters and the story made it an effortless and engrossing read. But here's the rub: I neither like nor admire Vanessa in any way. Her narcissism and her complete lack of moral ground really made her repulsive to me. I wouldn't want her as a friend. While I've been through much of what she's experienced, there is no way that I could identify with or empathize with her actions. So, at the end of the day, while the book was well written, it's not something I'd recommend to others.

By Tom Cairns Dave has written a compelling and transparent autobiography of his life and his walk with God. He doesn't hesitate to share the really difficult times as well as the joys he's experienced. As a long time friend and former colleague, I was aware of some of what he's dealt with, but this fills in the blanks and challenged me in my own walk with the Lord. I'd really encourage anyone who has known Dave to get this and be blessed even as I was.

By timcrack@alum.mit.edu Partly inspired by "The Lady and Her Bonds" story from Lefevre's 1901 book "Wall Street Stories." Subtitled "A Novel," because it is. It is longer and more slow-paced with "more story" than is the more popular "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator." I think Sampson Rock and Sam Rock are inspired by JP Morgan and his son Jack, respectively (read Ron Chernow's book "The House of Morgan" for their glum story - a real downer). However, the characters here are much happier than were the Morgans. This is a good read! This is similar to Bouck White's book "The Book of Daniel Drew," except Drew was a complete %$#!@ whereas Sampson Rock and Sam Rock actaully have some heart.

Ebook PDF Life After Favre: The Green Bay Packers and Their Fans Usher In the Aaron Rodgers Era, by Phil Hanrahan

Wisconsin native Phil Hanrahan moved from Los Angeles to Green Bay to chronicle the Packers 2008 football campaign, the first season in 17 years without quarterback Brett Favre. He is there as new starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers begins what one football writer called "the toughest job in professional sports".

Immersing himself in the worlds of team and town, Hanrahan is reborn a full-blown cheesehead: living above Vince Lombardi's first Packers office, observing training camp practices, attending the team's annual shareholders meeting, interviewing players, tailgating in arctic cold, shoveling snow at Lambeau for $8 an hour, celebrating Packer great Fuzzy Thurston's 75th birthday at Thurston's bar, and, at every turn, befriending scores of die-hard Packers fans he encounters along the way.

Hanrahan also journeys far from Lambeau as well, hitting away games in New Orleans and Minneapolis and pursuing adventures in Packer Land nation-wide, from a year-round Packers bar in Scottsdale, Arizona, to wide receiver Jordy Nelson's parents' sports bar in rural Kansas, to tiny Napoleonville, Louisiana, hometown of cornerback Tramon Williams.

Here is the first book written on the new-era Packers, the team of Rodgers, Coach Mike McCarthy, GM Ted Thompson. Featuring a new afterword that brings the Packers story up-to-date and covers their amazing triumph in Super Bowl XLV, Life After Favre chronicles one of the most dramatic seasons in Packers history while revealing, with energy, insight, and humor, the story of the NFL's winningest franchise.

Life After Favre: The Green Bay Packers and Their Fans Usher In the Aaron Rodgers Era, by Phil Hanrahan

From Publishers Weekly Hanrahan's chronicle of the 2008 Green Bay Packers-the Green and Gold's first season in 17 years without three-time MVP quarterback Brett Favre-has a bit in common with the team that limped to a depressing 6-10 season: namely, a lack of focus. A Wisconsin native, L.A. freelance writer Hanrahan temporarily relocated to a Green Bay hotel (which, decades earlier, had housed the Packers' offices) to cover the whirlwind aftermath of the summer 2008 decision by team management to trade the 38-year-old, freshly returned from retirement, to the New York Jets. While Hanrahan remains surprisingly objective regarding the most dramatic episode in Packers history, enthusiasm leads him to overstuff his narrative with unnecessary detail regarding individual games and peripheral players. Told primarily through game summaries and the voices of fans that Hanrahan meets in bars-including not just Green Bay's Stadium View Bar & Grille, but the Broke Spoke in Favre's hometown of Kiln, Miss.-this volume manages a colorful team history and a comprehensive career overview of Favre's replacement, Aaron Rodgers. Unfortunately, the book ends prior to Favre's second "retirement," renounced in the summer of 2009 when he joined Green Bay's hated rivals, the Minnesota Vikings. Review

The best book ever written on the Packers.

—John Rehor, GreenBayPackerNation.com

I’d give it an A for football fans and an A+ for Packer fans.

—Rick Gosselin, Dallas Morning News

Wisconsin native Phil Hanrahan moved from Los Angeles to Green Bay [to] chronicle the first season A.B. (after Brett). In the hands of an outsider (or less skilled writer), this could have been a “Gee, isn’t it charming how folks in this quaint little town love their football team” tome, but Hanrahan used access and insight to dig for deeper details that will surprise even diehard fans. He takes you from the practice field to the locker room to tailgate parties to Packers Bars nationwide, and tells the story of Favre’s exit and its impact on the state.

—Drew Olson, OnMilwaukee.com

Compelling.... Hanrahan doesn’t fall prey to sports-book clichés, and, as a result, Life After Favre ends up being much more a celebration of the inimitable culture that surrounds the Packers than just a look at one specific year or player.

—Jason Albert, Onion AV Club, Madison ed.

Freelance writer Hanrahan moved to Green Bay to live the life of a Packer fan, enhanced with a backstage press pass for player interviews.... While Hanrahan’s profile of personable new Packer quarterback Aaron Rodgers is particularly good, his strongest emphasis is on the delightful fans he meets not only in Wisconsin but also in far-flung Packer outposts in Kansas, Arizona, and Mississippi. VERDICT: A literate, fresh take [that] will be of interest to all football fans.

—John Maxymuk, Library Journal

Pack aficionados will dig glimpses of Green Bay’s storied past while they’re guided through [the] present. ... The book’s soul is Hanrahan’s interaction with fans. Whether he’s hanging with them in Kansas or Kiln, or shoveling brats or snow with them at Lambeau, those fans remind you that it is indeed a Packer Nation.

—Howie Magner, Milwaukee Magazine

About the Author Phil Hanrahan is a Wisconsin native and lifelong Green Bay Packers fan who has taught writing at Marquette University, managed publicity for Oxford University Press-NY, and served as media aide to a former presidential candidate. Currently based in Los Angeles, he is a summa cum laude graduate of Middlebury College, studied literature at Oxford University, and holds an M.A. in English from Duke University.

By Cecil Natapov Life After Favre, despite the fact that Favre's name is in the title (probably for obvious marketing reasons...) is really about the town of Green Bay and Wisconsin, really, and in fact it goes beyond Wisconsin to talk about both where the players come from and where the fans go (there are zillions of Packers bars all around the country, and world, for instance -- who knew?), so it is about Packers lore and fandom and about the culture of the midwest, too, and what curious mixes you get of players and fans. Jamaican Atari Bigby playing in the snow, Mormon linemen, Favre's mississippi hunting roots played out in Wisconsin duck hunting. Also, you learn that Green Bay is the only serious pro sports franchise with a community of fan ownership, which is cool, and there is a great chapter on Rodgers, and the stuff on Favre and the vikings -- written BEFORE Favre came back for the whatever-th time, of course -- is kind of prescient. Hanrahan even pictures a purple-clad Favre getting sacked by Kampman in the first Monday Night Football game...we'll see if Hanrahan got that right, cause the Pack and Vikes play twice this fall.Anyway. It's ambitious and literary, and while there is football game and football season narrative from 2008, it's really the profiles of the town and the team and the weather and the individual fans that makes this book a contribution to serious fun sports writing, and makes it much more than an account of the 2008 season, per se.It's really in the tradition of Plimpton and Halberstam. I hope to see more from Hanrahan, because he mixes a love for the game with great research and a light touch with the pen. Don't miss the section where he talks about Favre and the greek notion of "thymos" -- comparing him to Achilles, the epic, flawed hero! He also drops in to Ruby's Roadhouse in Bloomer, Wisconsin and meets Skeeter and Hooter, who tell some off-color jokes; a different kind of hero, the everyman. Fun.

Sometimes he or she gets lucky, sometimes he doesn't.Phil Hanrahan, the author of "Life After Favre," was rather unlucky. He started off nicely off. He decided to move to Green Bay for a few months in 2008 and write a book about the Packers. When he came up with the idea, Brett Favre was apparently headed toward retirement with Aaron Rodgers taking over the quarterback position of a team that was one pass away from a Super Bowl the previous year. But then Favre decided he wasn't done after all, starting a drama that Shakespeare would have stolen for his next play had he been around to see it. Favre and the Packers had a public disagreement, and so the public took sides on whether to keep their beloved quarterback or move on with Rodgers. The team's management opted to let Favre move on to the Jets via trade eventually, angering part of the fan base. That gets the start of Hanrahan's book off to a good start, even if we know how the story turns out -- especially years after publication. But once the quarterback controversy settles down a bit, as Rodgers plays pretty well and Favre has his ups and downs in New York, the book heads in a few different directions.Hanrahan tries something of an inside-and-out approach to the story. He does get some media access to the team, allowing him to attend the odd practice and news conference as well as to conduct some interviews. But for the most part, Hanrahan looks at the team from the outside, along the lines of how a Packer fan might.Indeed, the best parts of the book are the ones that cover Packer Nation. Football fans know that the Packers play in the smallest city in the National Football League by far and that the team is technically owned by the community. Packers fans are known for their devotion no matter where they live, and Hanrahan talks to quite a few of them during the course of the book. He even goes to the hometowns of Favre and a couple of the current players. The fans are devoted but not without perspective, so the author paints a very pleasant picture there. No wonder most of the reviews here are very positive. Hanrahan also does some good work on Packers' history; he happened to pick a hotel that used to house Vince Lombardi's office, which served as inspiration. As for the season itself, it didn't work out well for the author or the team. After a decent start, the Packers slowly unraveled through a string of close losses. Green Bay finished 6-10, well out of the playoffs. The portions of the book are rather detailed and don't date particularly well. At the point of some years out, it is easy to see the mind wander while reading. It also would have been nice to have had a roster and week-by-week record of the team in the appendix for reference.Hanrahan gets one final bit of bad luck at the end, when he writes that Favre had retired again from football and everyone was moving on from the drama of 2008. As we know, Favre wrote a sequel to the drama by coming back to football in the summer of 2009. There were no happy endings for him in Minnesota either, but the Packers got one under Rodgers in February 2011 when they won another Super Bowl."Life After Favre" comes across as a little unfocused in spots as the story bounces around a bit with only some attention paid to chronology. Still, it's a pleasant look at a franchise that is rather special in a number of ways, and thus should still be read and liked by those in Wisconsin and elsewhere who bleed green and gold.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. "We're No. 1" By Bryan J. Sverchek As the previous reviewer said, this isn't a book about Favre. Yes, it's about the Midwest and Wisconsin, Green Bay and Lambeau field, and rookies and veterans. But really it's about identity and what it means to play for or (maybe more importantly) to root for the Green and Gold in its first year without its most recognizable face of the last two decades.Hanrahan is an excellent writer, effectively navigating the intersection of professional sports and human interest. This is sports writing at its best--funny, literate, and truly moving at times. I challenge anyone not to feel chills as Hanrahan describes lifelong Packers fans watch Favre play his first game in Jets kelly green.Favre fans, Packers fans, Jets or Vikings fans, football fans, and really anyone simply interested in people will find something to love in this book. Sure, we learn a lot about state of Wisconsin and the Midwest U.S., Lambeau field and the town of Green Bay, NFL veterans and NFL rookies, but in the end, what we know is that even in a year where they go 6 and 10, the Packers and their fans really are "No. 1."

It was love at first sight when, as a young girl in 1904, Elsie first visited Palomar Mountain. Forever after she would refer to “my mountain” as some might speak of “my husband.” Elsie and her husband Jack managed their own apple ranch and rustic mountain resort on Palomar during WWI and the years following. Rising 6,000 feet above San Diego and other coastal cities, Palomar provided a creative setting for a life that was anything but dull. Elsie recalls in delightful detail their “proper” British cook, the threat of dangerous forest fires, and the shock of finding out that they had hired an escaped ax murderer. When Elsie Hayes Roberts was ninety-seven, writer Larry Littlefield described her as “having a memory as sharp as an Ansel Adams photograph.” Those who knew Elsie would agree, for she was a master storyteller who viewed life as a glorious adventure. Her true stories transport readers to life in another era. Although the majesty of Palomar Mountain belonged to all who ventured there, for Elsie it would always be her mountain.

By Ellen, Ontario, Canada Review of "Elsie's Mountain" - If only all our grandmothers had kept journals as Elsie did! I have long favored historical fiction for reading, but this, being true, is far better! What a rich and full life Elsie lived on her mountain! Constantly canning and baking, always cooking for visitors to the mountain, coping with having to get the phone line fixed and writing poetry! I loved the poetry! "Mrs. Lofty" made me laugh. "Mountain Blessing" made me sigh and wish I'd been there. I don't think I would try the enclosed rabbit stew recipe, but she did make some mouth watering wonders which have almost become a lost art. I ached with her in the difficult years and rejoiced at her joy in life returning to her mountain and travelling to Great Britain with her sister in her later years. What a rich legacy she passed on to her little granddaughter Barbara and how fitting that Barbara should write her book. I LOVED "Elsie's Mountain"! And I'm reminded that, as a little part of our nation's history, we might all be keeping a journal or blog to pass on.

A Warm Look at a Woman Who Appreciated Life and a Place that has Stood the Test of Time By Janet from Arizona Elsie's Mountain takes us back in time in so many ways. Yet it reminds us that "the more things change the more they stay the same." Anyone privileged to visit Mt. Palomar today will see modern conveniences scattered about, but the flavor of the mountain and the sense of majesty about the place remains timeless. A few gnarled apple trees still exist from Elsie's original orchard, as does her cozy little home at the bend of the road. The author did not merely copy well preserved journals, she brought them to life in a way that takes the reader to Mt. Palomar to feel the sense of place along with Elsie. This book is not only a compilation of letters and diaries, it is life at it best and sometimes at its most difficult; it is history in the making and history well preserved. Congratulations to Barbara Anne Waite for the loving perseverance it must have taken to gather Elsie's story into one beautiful book!

Elsie fell in love with Palomar Mountain, California, as a young girl. She and her husband, Jack, tamed the mountain after their wedding and cultivated apple orchards there. Their day-to-day adventures are delightfully told in Elsie’s Mountain.Elsie’s granddaughter, author Barbara Waite, lovingly interweaves photographs, letters, and journals written by Elsie into a memoir that will transport you to a memorable and endearing world. You’ll feel like you are sitting in Elsie’s living room, drinking tea, and sharing stories. The book is packed with sheer old-fashioned coziness. Adventurous storyteller Elsie is masterfully brought to life by Waite’s talent. Mementos from an old family trunk left in the attic are woven into an eventful chronicle. A great book for California historical societies and museums. Don’t miss this one.

A story told about Navajo children during a traumatic period in history, whentheir people were captured, marched hundreds of miles, and were imprisonedin a camp for four years. Their strong foundation is what kept them going andhelped some of them survive. The story concentrates on a clan whose youngest being a three-month-old baby andthe oldest a sixteen-year-old. The children endured the harshness of the elementsand the Us government. The children created a bond that would last foreverwith an elderly Navajo woman, who became their anchor when they could not find their loving parents. While the children were held captive, they carried onthe legacies of their clans. Some reunited with their parents and returned totheir homeland. With promises of better lives, the Navajo people were releasedto a land reserved within the four sacred mountains. They were forced to lead a different lifestyle, less flourishing than before, but they kept their families togetherand continued their traditional ways of life. This included the introduction ofa formal education. Navajo leaders figured that acquiring an education wouldplace them at an equal advantage of the dominant society. The children, however, had a different experience. In the end, most of them found balance in their lives back on their homeland.

In a riotous Nantucket sleigh ride, The Totnes Monster's rollicking narrative reels surreally from a controversial oil strike in the eponymous Totnes to a creakingly ancient Greek submarine wallowing out of Corfu harbor on its voyage round the Mediterranean to the Bay of Biscay, drunk-driven by the ouzo-boozy Captain Halitosis Kamakis, formerly of the Royal Hellenic Navy...along the way, there are the lugubrious musings of a sperm whale named Big Dirk and the sex-crazed Californications of Guru Shami Randi, self-proclaimed Enlightener and Master of the Vagina, whose facial resemblance to a pig owes much to the cocaine-induced collapse of his septum.

The aforementioned insalubrious lot soon cross swords with the denizens of formerly sleepy Totnes, now racked with black gold fever, among them an ample-bosomed sex therapist, the grasping councilor, the long-suffering vicar, John Priestley and his newcomer nemesis Swami Tikka Masala...oh yes and God, who puts in an appearance when the debauchery gets that bit too despicable to put up with, along with a very nasty virus known as SLIM....

By Christos Spyrou Never in two lifetimes would I have picked up this book, read the synopsis and purchased it. A friend, however, recommended that I do; and I did…..An altogether amusingly wacky, madcap and off the wall yarn; never having experienced a halluciagenic trip, I should imagine it would be something resembling the story line… characters and plot (I use the word sparingly), reminded me of that chaotic and screwy film…’It’s a mad, mad, mad, mad world’.Did I enjoy it? You betcha. An easy read filled with sex, hilarity, drugs, sailors, did I mention humour? and a libidinous cetacean. Thoroughly recommended!!

Mis-Information represents William Paskert’s memories of his twenty-eight year career as a telephone operator. It wasn’t the job he imagined he would end up in, but it’s the job that was granted him. Never a good student due to his dyslexia, he was simply looking for a regular paycheck. The type of job wasn’t as important as finding one that would allow him to successfully reach his monetary goals and to retire at a young age without too many scars. Mis-Information relives the journey of his working life in a format consisting of many amusing and poignant memories that occurred throughout his days as a telephone operator. William provides great insight into all the many capers that he was involved in over the years. The unique perspective of his thoughts about a telephone company and its uncaring attitude toward its employees, their morale or their futures, gives you the opportunity to visit the shallow world of insecure, uneducated, and nepotistic managers that represented the underbelly of the beast. Let William take you on a journey down the telephone line and into a world of electrons and machines that brought a world together, in a way like nothing less than the Internet, and continues to keep us all connected today.

This is a classic Greek tale retold by a master story teller for children. The retelling is filled with subtle humor, but some of the language contains words that most young children will not know. Two things follow: This is an opportunity for parents and children to interact with parents defining the difficult words. Alternatively, this is not a book for very young children. But, the story should be known because it has become a part of world culture. The story is about Perseus, who with his mother were placed in a basket and sent off in the river by evil people who wanted them dead. The two land on in an area where every inhabitant is bad except for the fisherman who found them and raised Perseus. When Perseus grew, the king wanted him dead and wanted to mistreat his mother. The king persuaded Perseus to undertake a mission of bringing back to him the head of the monster Medusa, one of three Gogons who wore snakes instead of hair. The problem was that anyone who looked at a Gorgon would be turned to stone. Perseus undertook the mission, but had no idea how he could accomplish it.

The Blue Fairy Book, by Andrew Lang

From the Back Cover It is almost impossible to envision what childhood would be like without the enchanting world of fairyland. Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, giants and dwarfs, monsters and magicians, fairies and ogres—these are the companions who will thrill young boys and girls of all lands and all times, as Andrew Lang's phenomenally successful collections of stories have proved. From the day that they were first printed, the Lang fairy tale books of many colors have entertained thousands of boys and girls, as they have also brought pleasure to the many parents who have read these unforgettable classics to their children. The Blue Fairy Book was the first volume in the series and so it contains some of the best known tales, taken from a variety of sources: not only from Grimm, but exciting adventures by Charles Perrault and Madame d'Aulnoy, The Arabian Nights, and other stories from popular traditions. Here in one attractive paperbound volume—with enlarged print—are "Sleeping Beauty," "Rumpelstiltskin," "Beauty and the Beast," "Hansel and Gretel," "Puss in Boots," "Trusty John," "Jack the Giantkiller," "Goldilocks," and many other favorites that have become an indispensable part of our cultural heritage. All in all, this collection contains 37 stories, all narrated in the clear, lively prose for which Lang was famous. Not only are Lang's generally conceded to be the best English versions of standard stories, his collections are the richest and widest in range. His position as one of England's foremost folklorists as well as his first-rate literary abilities makes his collections unmatchable in the English language.  Unabridged and unaltered republication of first (1891) edition.

About the Author Andrew Lang (March, 31, 1844 July 20, 1912) was a Scottish writer and literary critic who is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. Lang s academic interests extended beyond the literary and he was a noted contributor to the fields of anthropology, folklore, psychical research, history, and classic scholarship, as well as the inspiration for the University of St. Andrew s Andrew Lang Lectures. A prolific author, Lang published more than 100 works during his career, including twelve fairy books, in which he compiled folk and fairy tales from around the world. Lang s Lilac Fairy and Red Fairy books are credited with influencing J. R. R. Tolkien, who commented on the importance of fairy stories in the modern world in his 1939 Andrew Lang Lecture On Fairy-Stories.

By Inkhorn If you are new to Lang, it started in 1889 with the blue fairy book, and then a series developed, yellow, crimson, orange, red, and so forth. The fact that this series has endured to now is a testament to its quality. As you read, you will discover fairy tales and myths from all over the world, including the well known writers such as Grimm, Andersen, Perrault, and Mme D'Aulnoy. These are not the politically correct stories you might expect, and I believe you will find them useful whether it's for your own reading pleasure, of for passing on stories to children. In fact, if you look beyond the surface of the story, there is a cautionary aspect for children who might get lost, and the evil characters they might meet like the wolf in sheep's clothing, or the boy who cried wolf, or the nice person who offers a gift, but is really a wicked queen in disguise. There may be a young prince who helps a hairy man escape, and the king embarrassed and enraged orders the child to be killed. Naturally the woodsman slaughters an animal instead, and returns those to the king instead as evidence of performance of the deed. There are stories of boys becoming men, being tested by the princess, and doing great deeds to prove their worth. Some characters are wicked and evil, and so the protagonist has to develop resources of their own to defeat the deceit, trickery, jealousy, ambition, and wickedness of the people they encounter.I recommend you start with the blue book, because it has most of the best known stories, for example, Aladdin, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Bluebeard, Puss in Boots. You can check the contents of each book at mythfolklore, and even read the stories online. If you are buying Lang, you need to know which publisher, because there are many editions through different publishers, some are good with nice print and pictures, others have small print and no pictures.I highly recommend the Dover edition which has pictures and good size print. These pictures are black and white drawings. The Boomer books edition has good size print. If you want a durable hardcover library style book with a red string bookmark, I recommend the D N Goodchild books. Avoid the compilation book, and buy them individually. One of my favorite stories not in this edition is The wooing of Olwen. It's unusually cruel and bloodthirsty from Wales and King Arthur's court.I know you will enjoy these wonderful stories, and I hope this review was helpful.

Thirty-seven marvellous unadulterated fairy-tales By Mike Christie Andrew Lang's series of fairy-tale books are some of the fundamental children's reading of the twentieth and late nineteenth century. The stories are not "original": there's no such thing when they were almost without exception passed down orally; but they are in old, not very modernized tellings. Many readers who have only seen or read modern, Disney-fied versions of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty or Snow-White will not recognize some of the darker twists in these tales. For example, in Sleeping Beauty, when the Prince wakes the Princess and marries her, the story is by no means over. The Prince's mother is an Ogress, whom his father married for her wealth, and it's suspected that she likes to eat little children; that "whenever she saw little children passing by, she had all the difficulty in the world to avoid falling upon them". The happy couple have two children, named Day and Morning, and the Ogress decides to dine on them one day when the Prince is away. Yes, it still has a happy ending, but Disney it isn't.The illustrations--8 full page, plus 130 smaller ones--are all from the original 1891 edition. They're black and white woodcuts; very atmospheric, and I think most children will like them. The only thing that might have to be explained to a child is the occasional use of vocabulary that is no longer current. Most often this is the use of "thee" and "thou"; but a few other words will crop up. However, they're usually inferable from context, and the stories are marvellous entertainment regardless.

It has an excellent group of stories from different fairy tale writers, including Perrault, d'Aulnoy, and Grimm. This book was originally printed in the 19th century. It has not been abridged, nor have any of the original pictures been taken out. (Be warned, they're *artistic*) These are the original, unaltered by Disney versions, and contain the nightmarish plots they were meant to have. Anyone who collects fairy tales should have this.

This is a true story of adventure aboard a small sailboat. It's a book not just about sailing but about life. Good times and bad. It's about what happens at the very limits of physical, emotional, and mental capacity. Ultimately it's about how personal tragedy led to a life-changing discovery - The realisation that hidden deep inside of us all is the perseverance and passion needed for achieving long–term goals. It's a book that might just start you on your own Foolish Voyage. Story synopsis. Disillusioned with his life of normality a young man decides to buy an 18ft sailboat, make her his home and set sail in search of adventure. He finds it. Single-handedly sailing the South Coast of England to Falmouth. Working as yacht delivery crew. Near shipwreck on Spains 'Costa da Morte', the Coast Of Death. Fire onboard in the Atlantic. Engine failure in the Mediterranean. Then he decides to sail his own tiny boat across the Bay of Biscay . It all goes terribly wrong. He returns to a life of 'normality' and gives up on his dreams. It all goes terribly wrong. In the depths of depression, he makes a decision. He'll build another boat, he'll go on another Foolish Voyage. Here's what some of the Beta-readers said about 'A Foolish Voyage' "Holy S**t Neil! You had me in tears at the end. What an amazing story". - Craig "A compelling retelling of a young sea-gypsy's maiden adventure which, despite the outcome, makes you want to grab your kit-bag, let go the lines and cast your lot in with the waves. I wish I'd read this 30 years ago." Jon Kutassy "I love your book! You're honest, the book has spirit, you describe fun things as well as drawbacks in a lively and easy to follow way. It's not a story about beautiful Islands, lovely seas and all going smooth as most authors nowadays seem to try to tell their readers. It's a real-life story that doesn't hide things like the problems we sailors face, and, on the other hand, it allows the reader to feel some bit of the freedom our life has to offer." - Dody "Wow! I really enjoyed the read. It seemed like 2 stories. One was of the development of you as a skipper, to the point of the fateful voyage. The second was the voyage itself and the psychological impact it had on you. Like all good books it left me wanting more." - Peter "Recommended even if you are not a sailor, Neil writes from the heart. This is an open and honest account of his sailing adventures from the beginning to the point where he sadly loses his boat in his 'foolish voyage'. An intriguing and enjoyable read." - Jackie

Much of the same stuff found in other "l'm living the sailing-life and you're not"-books. in my opinion a lttle more honest than most, a little less Preachy than many and seems very sincere. Also the fellow can spin a yarn, not as good as some of the old timers but way better than most of the new gang since we have entered the E-book-self-published world of, " I went sailing so I am writing a book". Well worth the price, good information and genuine as far as I can tell. The chap also seems to realize that everyone living on land is not miserable and everyone living on a boat is not in a constant state of bliss. Good book

Neil's determination to live a life worth living inspires the reader to do the same: to challenge the status quo and to evaluate a life's direction. It is a story of achieving a dream and the hurdles one must overcome on the way. It is also a story of failure and how it impacts our lives and spirits. For some, failure is an unscalable brick wall, a devastation so complete as to halt the endeavor. For others, it is a challenging opportunity to grow. In A Foolish Voyage Neil bares his soul and allows us, the readers, to join him in the examination of our own failures if we dare.A Foolish Voyage is a stroll through the world of the small-boat sailor in England, rich with the types of characters one always seems to find in the vicinity of small boats and replete with the heady sensations of harbours as well as the open sea. It is at once both a tale of courage as well as doubt, a vivid account of those moments that, if survived, make the stories sailors love to tell “round a pint” or two...much, much later.Deb Akeywww.theretirementproject.blogspot.com

By Amazon Customer An honestly written book by an ordinary bloke, so easy to relate to and learn from. I liked the fact that the closing adventure was not excused as something outside his control. He just wasn't ready for such a trip and he, not the boat or the seas, was responsible for his surrender to the option of rescue. I have been sailing for over 40 years and found this book refreshing, amusing and thrilling.

I found myself tearing up over and over again at God's miraculous love and rescue from hopelessness. Every story and chapter inspired me to let go of my fears, my past, and to put complete trust in the Lord for my future.~ Susanne Johnson, Police Special Services Wendy's life journey reminds me of the Hebrews living in Egypt in the days of Moses. They underwent traumatic experiences as helpless slaves. As they cried to God for help, God heard their groaning and sent Moses to rescue and liberate them. He protected them and exposed them to His laws as He prepared them to enter the Promised Land. It seems that is what God has done in Wendy's life! He snatched her from bondage and mercifully revealed Himself to her through His living word. It is my hope and prayer that Wendy's testimony be anointed by God's Spirit and alter the soul and spirit of the reader!~ Eddy Swieson, Author of Why The Angels Laughed &Commentary Writer for Community Bible Study (CBS)

"God was offering his love and acceptance for free, without my earning it or proving I was good enough to receive it" (p. 77)."UNbroken" is about God- His love, His compassion, His provision, and His care. Her story surely makes Psalm 23 come alive from the darkest valley to the highest of the mountain where our Heavenly Father prepares a table in the presence of enemies. As the readers take journey into her brutally honest yet humbly courageous life story, they will witness God carefully collecting her and her family's broken scars and arranging them in His perfect way to create an exquisite masterpiece that He treasures. It was very uplifting for the author to clearly present that loving God is a conscious choice. And once that choice is made, God cannot resist but to lavishly pour out His love. Her story is a testimony that God not only cares for the big aspects of our lives (redemption, restoration, etc.), but He also cares, sometimes with sprinkles of humor, about the littlest details such as an oval tub.The best part of her journey is the fact that it did not just end with her family receiving God's blessings. Her numerous testimonies of how she is being relentlessly used by The Lord to share everything that she received from Him in order to fulfill the Great Commission of gives us hope that we will be hands and feet of Jesus in this world even if we are imperfect vessels.Overall, this book is well-written and thoughtful. If you want to vicariously experience the intimate love of God, this book is a must read. I pray that after you finish the last page, it will inspire you to stay closely connected to the Father in Heaven like it did for me.

By Kammi This book spoke such encouragement and positive thought into my life right when I needed it! This amazing woman's journey through one of the darkest and most vulnerable places in her life truly speaks to the strength of herself, her daughter and her family, as well as the strength of her Lord. Seeing true, day to day experiences where the Lord came through time and time again in real ways reminds the reader that God is there and cares about every possible aspect of our lives, no matter where we stand or the strength of our faith. I appreciate this authors honest vulnerability and her openness in sharing her day to day struggles not only on her own but as a mother caring for her children. So positive and inspiring in every way, this book shares encouragement and hope in any situation!
