Although bishops must submit their resignations at 75, many work well beyond those years, often retaining authority and influence well into their 80’s.That is a primary reason the authors of this new biography (the authors actually eschew the label of “biography” in the introduction) caution us that this book is hardly the definitive story of Cardinal Wuerl, who only recently turned 75. He arguably is America’s most important and influential prelate in the midst of the pontificate of Pope Francis. Indeed Father Rosica, CEO of Salt and Light Television Network in Canada and an English-language assistant to the Holy See Press Office says, “he [Cardinal Wuerl] is one of the most articulate interpreters of who Francis is and what Francis is doing…” Though not definitive, this book gives a thorough overview of the many initiatives and events in the life of Cardinal Wuerl. It also gives a solid introduction to his thinking. For anyone seeking an introduction to the Cardinal, this book offers a great beginning. It becomes clear in chapter after chapter that Cardinal Wuerl has consistently tried to strike a course of episcopal leadership that steers clear of extreme positions. Only in cases that he deemed most clear and urgent, such as the case of priests found guilty of abusing minors, was there deviation from this course. This “middle road” will no doubt be a topic of debate in more critical biographies and histories yet to be written, but in this volume it stands as one of the defining characteristics of Cardinal Wuerl.Indeed one of the reasons that it is important to think about the episcopacy of Cardinal Wuerl is that there is a discernible philosophy at work. Amidst his dizzying array of initiatives, committees, and ministries, which really do demand a book length treatment, a clear line of thinking and action emerges. Cardinal Wuerl is hardly the only influential American Catholic bishop of the past few decades, but he is the best example of a certain kind of engagement with the world and the church that has become known as “moderate” and/or “pastoral.”Work in the church as long as Cardinal Wuerl has it, and it is impossible to avoid controversy. Accordingly, the authors revisit Wuerl’s tumultuous early years in Seattle, where he served as an auxillary bishop to the controversial Archbishop Hunthausen. They also give a glimpse into the restructuring of the Diocese of Pittsburgh in the late 80’s and early 90’s, reveal what Wuerl did in his own diocese to deal with abusive priests, and how he handled the eventual explosion of that same story on the national scene in the early 2000’s. A whole chapter is dedicated to the “Difficult Issues” highlighted by the debate of wayward Catholic politicians and whether they should be denied Holy Communion. None of these prominent issues are side-stepped, although none are also dealt with from a critical perspective. The book very much presents the Cardinal’s side of things, with no counter viewpoints.In a different light, the book offers glimpses of the many initiatives that Cardinal Wuerl has undertaken and has been involved with to bring about renewal in the Church, often in relation to what we usually refer to as the “New Evangelization.” His well-documented advocacy for Catholic education, his establishment of the Extra-Mile Foundation, and other serious, long-term financial investments in Catholic education are documented. His desire to have more people visit the confessional, his inter-religious work, and his vast array of contacts and friends also come to the fore. The amount of information covered more than confirms Cardinal Wuerl’s reputation for hard work and long hours.“Something More Pastoral” is a lengthy but easy read. Ann Rodgers and Mike Aquilina provide a journalistic style review of the impressive and noteworthy career of an American prelate who continues to sit front and center in the unfolding story of American Catholicism. Why Wuerl and not others who may seem prominent? Maybe it's that he's "just more pastoral!" That's the impression he gives. That's what is shown in the many examples found between the covers of this. It reflects the man I recognized and met crossing the street, walking toward me in Denver during World Youth Day (1993) soon after I was introduced to the third edition of his The Teaching of Christ: A Catholic Catechism for Adults. Not even knowing me, he stopped to talk. Years later, I met him in Rome at World Youth Day. He remembered me and our quick meeting. That's a Pastor! I can only imaging how he knows people in his Archdiocese! In The Church of Mercy, Chapter 22, Pope Francis tells Bishops, "May your heart be large enough to welcome all the men and women you come across during the day." And later, "please remain among your people. Stay, stay ... Steer clear of the scandal of being 'airport bishops'! Be welcoming pastors, journeying on with your people...." Just a few words which might explain what's at the heart of the mission of this Archbishop and Cardinal. See for yourself!

I believe this was the fourth book of hers that I've read and enjoyed with a smile on my face. From the start I grinned, giggled, smirked, and rolled my eyes. The only negative thing is the editors failure to check and correct for grammatical errors. Nothing pulls me out of a good reading flow than seeing misspellings or wrong words or tense or even an unnecessary added word. As an example: Choose instead what should have been Chose or the word Know should have Now. Other than that I found the read fun and look forward to reading more from this author. If you are a fan of fairy tales, some wicked adult humor, and a twisted look at your childhood story characters then this the book for you.

Who doesn't love a little dip back into New Never City, especially at Christmas time? When you get fed up with all the god-resting merry gentlemen and the stress of spending, it's time to laugh at loud at this twist on an old holiday classic. Kazimer's wit shines through as she follows a certain muffet-lounging, saddle-shoe wearing, tiny blondy with evil tendencies that Scrooge would never dream of. I highly recommend this for a quick, fun escape.

Inspirational and Insightful By Amazon Customer For those who have lost a child, for those who are helping others who are grieving that loss, Tolu Peters’ book is a must read. She writes openly with honesty and vulnerability, sharing her raw emotions as a mom dealing with the untimely death of her son. All will relate to her spiritual tension of asking God for the best of outcomes while trusting him when the prayers were answered in a way different than what she had hoped. Her trust in God, her spirit of celebratory triumph in the grateful joy of loving her son, even though for a shorter time than that expected on earth, is an inspiration.

At the End of the Santa Fe Trail, first published in 1932 (and reprinted in 1948), is Sister Blandina Segale's account of her life in the southwestern U.S. from 1872 to 1892. Sister Blandina (1850-1941), born in Italy and emigrating with her family to Cincinnati when she was a child, worked with the poor, the sick, immigrants, prisoners, and Native Americans while in Trinidad, Colorado, and in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, New Mexico (and later in Ohio). The book is based in large part on her journal and on the letters she exchanged with her sister Justina, who was also a religious sister in Ohio. At a time when lawlessness and brutality were the norm, Sister Blandina displayed courage, tough-mindedness, and a deep religious faith in service to the less-fortunate. Recent efforts have been made by the Archdiocese of Santa Fe to have Sister Blandina made a saint, and in November 2015, the Archdiocese closed its inquiry and will present its findings to the Vatican for review and verification. Included in this new edition from Pathfinder Books are the original Author's Note and Foreword from the 1932 book, and Chapter Notes and Bibliography from the 1948 edition.

This is the diary of the unflappable and determined Sister Blandina recounting her experience when, as a young nun, she is sent to a mission out West. Let me tell you, she is an amazing woman! Strong, brave, and absolutely unwavering, she knows how to get things done and how to deal with all sorts of tough characters. Along with hundreds of other nuns, Sr. Blandina helped to civilize the West, although history and popular Western fiction largely ignores the contributions of these brave women. This book should be required reading for anyone who wants to know what the Wild West was truly like. Why has America left unacknowledged the crucial role that Catholic nuns had in making the West a more Godly place?

A Good History of Trinidad, Colorado By Maria This journal written by a Catholic Sister of Charity living in the Southwest as a missionary in the late 19th century is riveting. It's a first-hand account of life at the end (and near the end) of the Santa Fe Trail. Her exploits(including preventing lynchings, convincing brigands not to scalp the innocent, talking Indians in war paint not to attack a campground)are described in matter-of-fact terms, as she simply records her life as it unfolded. She would not have described herself as a heroine, but heroine she was, even as she went about her daily life building a school, teaching children, taking care of indigents who were sick, and visiting the jailed (including Billy the Kid). It's a clear-eyed slice of life in Trinidad, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque in the days of the Wild West.

By Jim Glen I would highly recommend 50 years, 50 Moments as a great historical read of the first 50 Super Bowls played. Everybody knows the scores and stats of most of the games played but what this book gives you are insights from former players, coaches, and owners that you will not get elsewhere. Jerry Rice and Randy Williams have literally beat the bushes to track down these people who give the reader a first person perspective of everything that transpired during the many Super Bowls played over the years. You will relive the greatest plays in history from players like Starr, Bradshaw and Brady to name a few. There are also some not so greatest plays that will come back to you after reading this book such as Garo Yepremian's ill-fated pass attempt in Super Bowl VII. A great non-play highlight would be the game winning drive for SF in Super Bowl XXIII and Joe Montana calling plays as well as giving a John Candy sighting while in the huddle. Again, this book has it all and I would highly recommend it! Sacramento, CA.

What an insult By Sandwich Tearing apart Doyle's great work, removing "objectionable" content about Mormons (it's fiction, deal with it), shortening the lovely descriptive paragraphs, and swapping around words is a horrible undertaking. It's really no different than censorship, just like when Albermale County, Virginia removed the book from its sixth-grade required reading list. It's not like the bits with murderous religious fanatics were truly intended to offend anyone, and by removing these things from the book, you leave a gaping hole in the plot. I bet Sir Doyle is turning in his grave.

I can't find a free Kindle edition of A Study in Scarlet except for one that's been "remastered" to appeal to "newer audiences"?! I am one of many people who have a deep appreciation for the classics, and part of the charm that classic literature holds is the "archaic" language it uses. This is practically a sacrilege towards classic literature. Doyle's writings are definitely worth paying for, but I am disappointed that, while able to find other Sherlock Holmes titles in their original formats for free on Amazon, I'm unable to find this one for free.

By J Grey I really enjoyed this book.I have slowly been gaining weight over the last 2 years and finally decided to do something about it. I have heard of intermittent fasting and wanted to learn a little more about it.This book explains it very well and is very well written.I am currently skipping breakfast and eating in an 8 hour window. This seemed strange at first but after about 4 or 5 days, it was no problem at all.I am staying away from the carbs and have upped my proteins and fats which is making me a little cranky but it will be worth it in the long run.This method of eating is much easier to plan my life around than weighing food and counting calories so I'm sure I will be able to stick at it long term,RecommendedThanks James

There are people for and against this way of life; it works for me. I have more energy, less allergic reactions (used to impact me a lot) and I have shed body fat. One of the recommendations on Primal was to fast at least once a week. After doing this for a while I have read more about it and found Intermittent Fasting (IF) has become one of the newest trends that is resulting in increased benefits. After reading many posts about IF on the Internet I decided to read a book on the subject to get the A to Z.It is a pretty quick read and covers all of the topics from what fasting is, the different types of fasting, how to approach it, the rules and how it impacts on your daily life whether that be working or exercising. For example, if you want to have a cheat day where you indulge there is an approach you can take. The book isn't heavily technical but does give you a flavour for what is happening at the hormonal level and its impact to body's functions.I would recommend this book as a starting point for anyone looking to understand and try out Intermittent Fasting.Three key takeaways from the book:1. Types of Intermittent Fasting (i.e. Leangains, Eat Stop Eat, The Warrior Diet, Fat Loss Forever). Choosing an approach depends on how you work and whether you can fast for long periods of time. For example if you want a day to indulge with food then one type of intermittent fasting may be more beneficial2. Impact of Growth Hormone (GH) when fasting. One of the big fallacies of fasting is that it impacts on muscle growth. Apparently your growth hormone increases during sleep, when you work out on an empty stomach and during/post fasting.3. Incorporating high interval training (HIT) on your cheat days is beneficial to reduce the impact of a high calorie day

It contains proven steps on how to get healthy now. This book clearly explains the science behind intermittent fasting weight loss, and why it is so effective. It introduces different intermittent fasting methods, and help you choose which one is best for you. Intermittent fasting is proven safe and effective in weight loss, and improve your over all body health.. This is an amazing challenge to build lean muscle and this helpful guidebook showed me the right path and effective techniques. This book walks you step by step through each aspect of intermittent fasting, explaining the benefits, why it works, and different ways of making it fit into your lifestyle. This book has explained thoroughly the whole idea of intermittent fasting. Overall it's a great book.

It was a distressing time; and poor Jerusha Abbott, being the oldest orphan, had to bear the brunt of it. But this particular first Wednesday, like its predecessors, finally dragged itself to a close. Jerusha escaped from the pantry where she had been making sandwiches for the asylum’s guests, and turned upstairs to accomplish her regular work. Her special care was room F, where eleven little tots, from four to seven, occupied eleven little cots set in a row. Jerusha assembled her charges, straightened their rumpled frocks, wiped their noses, and started them in an orderly and willing line toward the dining room to engage themselves for a blessed half hour with bread and milk and prune pudding.

Gr 9 Up-Jerusha Abbott has grown up in the John Grier Home for orphans. As the oldest, she is in charge of the younger children. An anonymous benefactor on the Board, "Mr. Smith," decides to send her to college, as long as she writes to him faithfully detailing her education. Originally published in 1912, Jean Webster's coming-of-age tale continues to be relevant to young women today. Actress Kate Forges shares these months and years, from freshman to senior in college. Through a series of letters Jerusha writes to "Daddy-Long-Legs," a relationship filled with affection and respect develops, even though she is the only correspondent throughout the years. Although the narrative unfolds slowly, the language is sophisticated, highly descriptive, and witty. Jerusha's concern about social class standings may seem a bit dated to most listeners, as the reference to "Negro waiters" when she is riding the train may surprise and offend some listeners. Forbes gives an outstanding one-woman performance. Her crisp elucidation, varied intonations, and enthusiasm for this character provide a first-rate reading. A sweet story with a twist By Amazon Customer Usually I absolutely hate novels that are supposed to be a collection of letters and/or diary entries for this simple reason, they are as transparent as saran wrap. Something along the lines of "I'm just jotting down a casual letter to inform you that I just had a terrible fight with so-and-so, here's what we said word for word complete with speaker attributes"That's why I was so pleasantly suprised with this book. The writing is entertaining, intelligent and always realistic. That is EXACTLY how a person in their late teens, early twenties writes (I know, I'm a letter writer in that age group) and it is so refreshing to read an author who knows what she is talking about on the subject.Judy Abbott is most certainly not a Pollyanna, she teases, gets angry and argues but she has a nice nature and always manages to patch things up. She is an orphan who writes to her mysterious benefactor whom she dubs "Daddy-Long-Legs". Because he is her fairy godmother for all purposes, she confides in him even though she knows he will never answer. The ending is marvelous with a great little twist. I think this book is great for girls 8-80 and am sorry I did not read it sooner
33 of 33 people found the following review helpful. A Classic You Can Read in a Day By Michelle Bowden I've read this book a few times, and every time I come back to it, I can't put it down. It's short (around 200 pages) & sweet. The book was published in 1912, and is one-of-a-kind, as it consists almost entirely of letters written by Judy. Judy is an orphan from the John Grier Home, an orphange she was raised in since she was a baby. Her future seems very bleak until one day she is unexpectedly offered the opportunity for a paid college education to become an author by one of the orphanage's trustees. In return, she has to write monthly letters to the unknown trustee who is known as Mr. John Smith. She calls him "Daddy-Long-Legs" because she saw his tall shadow as he left the building. Her letters are very entertaining, and often impertinent. That is really all I want to tell of the story, but here are a couple of quotes from the book that I loved:"It isn't the big troubles in life that require character. Anybody can rise to a crisis and face a crushing tragedy with courage, but to meet the petty hazards of the day with a laugh -- I really think that requires spirit.""I think the most necessary quality for any person to have is imagination. It makes people able to put themselves in other people's places. It makes them kind and sympathetic and understanding. It ought to be cultivated in children."
17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. a delightful printing of a wonderful book By Mindful Consumer first, please allow me to say that i am quite enjoying these puffin classics editions of some of my favorite novels!'daddy long legs' is the story of a young orphan girl named judy who was removed from the orphanage by an anonymous patron/guardian who sends her away to school. the trade-off for this extraction is that she must write him a letter at least once per month.the joy in this novel is the progression and self-assurance that builds with each letter she writes to him. i will spoil none of the story, but the ending is heartwarming and will not disappoint.having this updated printing reminds me of when i first read this in grade school/middle school. these joyful memories are priceless.a bonus here with the puffin classics is the addition of backstory included at the end of the book. here you can learn more about the author, the story, the characters, and so much more. what a delightful thing to include!i have purchased most of these puffin classics editions, and will certainly look for future additions to add to my collection.
