3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. essential in the overall knowledge about Football.... By Kady I think this Football book has been comprehensive in its attempt to explain everything one needs to know about the sports so that he will eventually have the skills needed to master, if not perfect, it. The book has a thorough approach in doing it, very detailed and used easy to understand vocabulary too. Although I don't know anyone playing Football, the ideas I got here will help me understand the sports better so that the next time I watch one, I will not be at a lost. I appreciate the discussion about the basic rules, I think this is essential in the overall knowledge about Football.

Calypso, queen of the seas, is mad. Spitting mad. Ghosts of the dead are fouling her waters. She wants this problem fixed, and she wants it fixed now. Rushing off in search of Hades, lord of the underworld, to demand answers, she's soon shocked to discover him bound and standing trial before a jury of his peers - for nothing less than murder.

Calypso normally despises the beastly gods, all of them, but there's something about seeing Hades bound as he is that gives her an evilly clever idea. Tired of being a virgin queen, she wishes to shed that boring image once and for all, and no one seems quite as fit for the task as the gorgeous and brooding Hades. Of course, there is the minor problem of murder to deal with, but Calypso is bound and determined to have her way.

And when a dark queen gets an idea, nothing and no one can stand in her way....

Calypso is an ‘original’, older than the Gods of Olympus, more powerful than ever they imagined, with a penchant for bad subterfuge, her pet shark Bruce and an insatiable curiosity.A giant toddler at times, Calypso’s desire for Hades and to learn about all things sex bring the two into close proximity, and the battle for who reigns supreme in their relationship is a wild ride. Through it all, we get to see the insecurities that they both have, the not particularly likeable Hermes, Zeus and Demeter, learn about the perennially spoilt Persephone and the jealous Poseidon. Even more fun to meet are Artemis and the goddess of Justice who has a passion for loud music and dancing. These characters all met and conflict in varying ways, not unlike a family with petty jealousies, hurts, prejudices and agendas. But, as she works to discover who is behind the plot to frame Hades, and just where Persephone is being held, Calypso comes to discover her true need for the relationship and companionship that he has brought. With several clever and unique creatures, great dialogue and some steamy moments this story was a quick and clever read, with plenty of promise for more.I received an eArc copy of the title from the author for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

10 of 13 people found the following review helpful. get ready to laugh...a lot! By andrewsap I was gifted a copy for an honest review!I loved this book! At first I was hesitant with the pairing of calypso and Hades but after getting into the book a couple chapters kit could be no other way! Calypso it so bold and commanding but at the same time all awkward and unsure of herself and what she's doing at times. The things this girl says will have you laughing you butt off. Then we have Hades who, well you know it's Hades. He's a dark mysterious sexy beast. I've always loved Hades, to me he was the best of all the Greek gods and goddesses. I mean c'mon! It takes someone completely amazing and bad ass to control the underworld and all that goes with it. Anywho, Hades is taking a lot of heat from the other gods over something he may have or may not have done. Calypso sees an opportunity and takes it. There's a lot to love with this story and it really will leave you wanting the next one right away. And to end this review.... Carrots.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. It was okay... By Amazon Customer Unexpected pairing... Overpowering child-like heroine and while the rest of the cast were a bit bland, except for a few... I say the heroine is child-like but there are a few instances when she reminds me of a good nature, fun loving grandmother, my only problem is that about eighty percent of the time it feels like I'm reading the story of a teen rather than an entity that has existed for centuries. I get that she only recently began living a human-like life and all but this feels more like a teenager's exploration into sexhood... Anyways, the story and characters have a funny/nice twist and it was a fun story to read...

Several years ago, Diana Athill accepted that she could no longer live entirely independently, and moved to a retirement home in Highgate. When she had acclimatized, she found herself released from the daily anxieties of caring for her own property, and free to settle into her remaining years. From this vantage point, she reflects on what it feels like to be very old, and on the moments in her long life that have risen to the surface and which sustain her in these last years. What really matters in the end? And after a long life, which memories stand out? As she approaches her 100th year, Athill recalls in sparkling, precise detail the exact layout of the garden of her childhood, a vast and beautiful park attached to a large house; relates with humour, clarity and honesty her experiences of the First and Second World Wars and her trips to Europe as a young woman; and in the remarkable title chapter, describes her pregnancy at the age of forty-three, losing the baby and almost losing her life - and her gratitude and joy on discovering that she had survived. With vivid memories of the past mingled with candid, wise and often very funny reflections on what it's like to be very old, Alive, Alive Oh! reminds us what really matters, and of the joy to be found at every stage of life.

19 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Needed reading By H. Wood It's hard to explain why this book is as good as it is. The author is a woman in her high 90s in an assisted living facility. The preface is about the scene, so horrifying to younger outsiders, of old people "just sitting there." She then engages in a series of reveries about her life. They range from the prosaic, such as memories about fashion, to the thoughtful essays about subjects such as why she lives to read Boswell and Byron, to the philosophical final chapter about her thoughts about death. It isn't a profound or highly quotable book. Shortly after realizing this, I realized that it isn't meant to be profound or quotable. It is real, and full of the traces of a life well lived and calmly thought over.

So from this point of view her life was not easy, there was WWI and then WWII followed. But in her book of short stories from her long life there are no such complains. This book is nice to read and it shows how one's life can be fully lived no matter of circumstances. All depends on how we perceive the world around us. And Ms. Athill is an expert to see even the little details as nice and beautiful. One of the most important messages of this book is that to make a life successful is to accept whatever comes in one's way. And this also applies for the end of it. Once she was really near the death and as she puts it. "My last thought - if that had turned out to be what it was - would have been acceptance." The book is full of wise thoughts and a real pleasure to read.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Loved this as much as her earlier memoir. By Janie A. I read it straight through the minute I downloaded it. Diana Athill is one in a million. She tells the truth and in her 90's, is both realistic and optimistic about growing older. She inspires me.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I loved the setting and the vivid descriptions of the characters By Michelle A. Reading this book made me want to hop on a plane to Paris. I loved the setting and the vivid descriptions of the characters, their personalities and their interactions as the story unfolded. I have to say I fell in love with Luke. There'd probably be a lot more Catholics in the world if they all looked and behaved like him. His love for Maya is so sweet, and even though they seem like an unlikely couple, they find a comfort in each other that is rare, dignified and beautiful.Perhaps the author will write another novel in the future. I certainly hope so.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful By NiKi What a beautiful story… Reading it almost felt like living in Paris with each page that I turned. As I began to take in the tone of the book, I was vividly absorbed by the beautiful trees lining the turbulent, dark, thick cloudy sky of Notre Dame, and intensely captivated by the heart of each character. It woke up my senses with deep feeling and curiosity. From that point on, I was completely immersed in God’s Beautiful Dream.God’s Beautiful Dream is not only an irresistible, exciting love entanglement with its most beautiful seductive forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. But it seems so familiar to all of us -- with this common struggle from within -- in such a way that it is so hard for logic to prevail over emotion, morality over desire. The more I got into God’s Beautiful Dream the deeper I related to my own thoughts and feelings in regard to the fruit of the “tree of the knowledge of good and evil”.The author surely did an excellent job in shining God’s Beautiful Dream through to her readers. Undeniably, she makes the readers see themselves as clearly as they really are, without any judgement and condemnation, which certainly is God’s beautiful dream.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A feel good book.....no violence, death or gore - how refreshing is that!! By Kathy Barthrop This is a wonderful story that takes place in Paris, and you can feel yourself being transported to the places mentioned! This book is not extra Religious, as one might think by the cover, so please give it a chance! Easy, fast reading.....wondering how it will end. I hope she writes a sequel to this book!

Best PDF Ebook Alone on the Wall, by Alex Honnold

The life and death-defying feats of Alex Honnold, a visionary climber of the sort that comes along only once in a generation.

Only a few years ago, Alex Honnold was little known beyond a small circle of hardcore climbers. Today, at the age of thirty, he is probably the most famous adventure athlete in the world. In that short time, he has proven his expertise in many styles of climbing and has shattered speed records, pioneered routes, and won awards within each discipline. More spectacularly still, he has pushed the most extreme and dangerous form of climbing far beyond the limits of what anyone thought was possible.

Free soloing, Honnold’s specialty, is a type of climbing performed without a rope, a partner, or hardware―such as pitons, nuts, or cams―for aid or protection. The results of climbing this way are breathtaking, but the stakes are ultimate: if you fall, you die.

In Alone on the Wall, Honnold recounts the seven most astonishing climbing achievements so far in his meteoric and still-evolving career. He narrates the drama of each climb, along with reflective passages that illuminate the inner workings of his highly perceptive and discerning mind. We share in the jitters and excitements he feels waking in his van (where he lives full time) before a climb; we see him self-criticize in his climbing journal (a veritable bible for students of the sport); and we learn his secrets to managing fear―his most enviable talent. Veteran climber and award-winning author David Roberts writes part of each chapter in his own voice, and he calls on other climbers and the sport’s storied past to put Alex's tremendous accomplishments in perspective.

Whenever Honnold speaks in public, he is asked the same two questions: "Aren't you afraid you're going to die?" and "Why do you do this?" Alone on the Wall takes us around the world and through the highs and lows in the life of a climbing superstar to answer those fascinating questions. Honnold's extraordinary life, and his idiosyncratic worldview, have much to teach us about risk, reward, and the ability to maintain a singular focus, even in the face of extreme danger.

Alone on the Wall, by Alex Honnold

Review “Honnold is the biggest name in a group of adventure athletes engaging in high-risk live action-sports spectacles that seem to be pulled from the Evel Knievel playbook.” (Grayson Schaffer - Outside)“Honnold has free-soloed the longest, most challenging climbs ever. Most peculiar of all, even to elite rock climbers, Honnold does this without apparent fear, as if falling were not possible.” (Daniel Duane - New York Times Magazine)“Alex is really the first climber to rise from the margins of this lonely fringe sport to become a kind of celebrity.” (Josh Dean - Men's Health)“Alex Honnold's climbing feats are astonishing. They are also absolutely horrifying. Reading about some of his ascents made me physically ill. As this riveting book makes clear, however, Honnold is neither crazy nor reckless. Alone on the Wall reveals him to be an utterly unique and extremely appealing young man.” (Jon Krakauer, author of Into the Wild, Into Thin Air, and Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town)

About the Author Alex Honnold is a world-class American rock climber best known for his free solo ascents of big walls.David Roberts is the author of, most recently The Lost World of the Old Ones, among twenty-six books about mountaineering, exploration, adventure, and Western history and anthropology.

If I get an adrenaline rush, it means that something has gone horribly wrong.” -Alex HonnoldAlone on the Wall is a phenomenal book from a phenomenal adventurer. I first learned of Alex Honnold's feats of climbing through the short film by the same name as this book. This book provides a deeper look into the journey that brought him to the public spotlight and the epic feats of adventuring he has completed since. It's incredibly inspiring to read in detail these accounts of Alex's ascents, link-ups, and expeditions. I was pumped every day that I was reading the book & got in lots of hiking and gym climbing. The book worked well with two authors. The narration alternates between italicized sections where Alex accounts his climbs first hand and the general text written by David Roberts that provides a third party perspective to the full spectrum of Alex's story. David also tied in key snippets of information about Alex from his climbing films, historical context for the climbing accomplishments, and enough technical explanation to allow even non-climbers to enjoy the narrative.KINDLE READERS: Locations 3170-3252 are stunning photos! I was so gripped by the story I did not even notice the photos until reaching the end of the text, at which point I flipped slowly through them with mouth slightly agape.FINAL TAKE: Highly recommended to all who want inspiration to elevate their dreams and continue pushing their personal adventures."I think of all the people who inspired me as a kid, and I sort of realize they were all normal people, too. I just do my normal life, and if people choose to be inspired by the things I’m doing, then I’m glad they’re getting something out of it.” - Alex Honnold

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Falls short. Pun intended. By Keith Mc Alex is a god, but this book is boring af after the first couple of chapters. He just doesn't have much interesting to say after he tries his best to describe his motivations and thought process. Also, most of what is detailed in the book has been repeated verbatim in the short videos produced by Sender, The North Face and Vice Sports. Certainly watching Alex climb for 20 minutes is far more inspiring than reading 300 pages about each pitch. Just search Alex on YouTube and you will find far more than this book can offer. Anyone with even a minor familiarity with climbing with grow impatient with the constant explanations of the sport's jargon and the photos in the center of the book are poorly curated, poorly captioned and don't particularly help facilitate getting to know Alex or project the beauty of his climbing.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Treat to the Adventurous Souls! By Chia I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sports/adventure biography. First of all, the format of the book is easy to follow with two narratives, one of Alex and one of the co-author, D. Robert. At first, I wondered why Alex chose this format as he already writes decently. Then, I realized this format provided a third person perspective for the readers to appreciate the gravity of some of the accomplishment. Alex's choice of co-author definitely was superb - I have read several D. Robert's books, always enjoyed them. Secondly, aside from the obvious (but still thrilling) climbing accomplishment/adventure, Alex's sense of humor really came through. The book was very entertaining to read! Finally, I think anyone who appreciates athleticism/adventure, climber or not (I have climbed but am not an avid climber), will enjoy this book for a lot of the "lessons" are universal. A side note, I really appreciate Alex's downplaying on those "lessons" - he doesn't overstate them, but really just tells a story and lets the readers decipher whatever apply to them. It is not "preachy", even though it still inspires the audience.

This book was born from the questions of family, friends, and strangers who were curious about my work as a teacher in Folsom State Prison in California. It is a collection of true and memorable experiences that highlight my spiritual journey through the belly of this beast. Enjoy reading about life in this community, prison operations, education in prison, and the fun this teacher had connecting with her captive audience.

I enjoyed all the true stories and the inspirational quotes. The author gives you a glimpse of prison life and of the people who are serving time. Some of them are the prisoners and some of them are the jailers. "My Life in Prison, An Education of the Heart" is fascinating. You will read it cover to cover once you start.

I think it would be very difficult to work in that kinds of environment. The writer made it a positive situation for the prisoners and herself. I read the book so fast that I wanted there to be more. I really like the writers style and the fact that it made me feel that I was with her in the classroom. I laughed and I cried. It was just a joy to read.

Steven Stinnett doesn’t grow up with a silver spoon in his mouth. An emotionally, mentally, and physically abusive stepfather makes life a nightmare at home, and his learning-disabled designation alienates Steve at school.

Thankfully, Steve’s grandparents show him love—and the love of God—as a young child, giving him something to hold onto throughout the trials and storms to come.

And come they do. After struggling through school and the shame of riding the “short bus,” Steve escapes the pain of his dysfunctional family to serve on an aircraft carrier in Vietnam. He survives the war and receives his honorable discharge from the Navy only to find himself searching for a meaningful life back at home after the war.

Through it all, Steve’s mustard seed-sized faith in God guides and sustains him, compelling him to pick himself up each time he gets knocked down—and keep walking.

Organized according to scriptural epigraphs, Life of a Baby Boomer offers hope, encouragement, and inspiration to veterans, victims of abuse, and anyone fighting for the strength and faith to keep going despite life’s troubles.

This story is of boy growing up in southern Ca during the fifties in a nonfunctional family. His only functioning parents were his grand parents who introduced him to Church and God. With all his disappointments he found that God never let him down.Good reading with some humor and tragedy.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Life of a Baby Boomer By froggie Just finished reading Steve Stinnett's "LIFE OF A BABY BOOMER" and found it to be truly inspirational. His personal stirring biography from his sad young childhood, to his graduation from High School and his many struggles during those formative years did not discourage him. He always knew that no matter how difficult life was for him in his sad and abusive childhood that a higher power "God" was watching out for him.Immediately after graduation from High School, Steve joined the Navy serving his country through the unrecognized and difficult Vietnam War. Those four grueling years serving our Country taught him lifelong virtues of Honesty, Integrity, courage and hard work. Steve always had a soft spot for the under-dog...those suffering hardship through no fault of their own. He knew he always wanted to help those less fortunate in life as he suffered the same maladies in his young life.Armed with his experience in the service, he goes on to get a college education and a job with a prison ( Correctional facility) where he would gain much insight and knowledge. He always had a burning desire to help others and perhaps one day become a youth counselor helping other young people live a good and productive life. After his many years with the Correctional Facility seeing the negative side of life with working many inmates, he suffers a severe Heart Attack and has to retire from that occupation.....However through his relationship with God and much prayer and contemplation, and much to his surprise and delight, he attains his life-long wish and desire to become a History teacher for the 7th/8th grade thereby attaining his desire to help and educate the young and help guide and steer them into adult-hood. That was his vocation for the next 21 years of his life. This is a must read book as it shows through difficult years in life no matter what the crosses life tosses your way, with Trust in God, hard work and determination, you can accomplish your utmost dreams and desires. God bless Steve, his wonderful partner and wife Brenda but most of all God whose Awesome power steered the vessel of Steve's wonderful life. I'm sure the Good Lord has a lot more for Steve to accomplish during his next, exciting chapter in life. Good luck! Job well done!Sincerely,R&R

The incredible depths ofspiritual frankness, as well as the raw confessions of his childhood life were a revelation. I felt like I was meeting new people....but knowing them as wonderful' loving, open people I should not have been surprised at their backgrounds. Proof that out of adversity can come some lovely, loving, giving people! Fun people with so much to offer all of us!

Excerpt from The Red PlanetLady Fenimore's compliments, sir, and will you be so kind as to step round to Sir Anthony at once?"Heaven knows that never another step shall I take in this world again; but Sergeant Marigold has always ignored the fact. That is one of the many things I admire about Marigold. He does not throw my poor paralysed legs, so to speak, in my face. He accepts them as the normal equipment of an employer. I don't know what I should do without Marigold... You see we were old comrades in the South African War, where we both got badly knocked to pieces. He was Sergeant in my battery, and the same Boer shell did for both of us. At times we join in cursing that shell heartily, but I am not sure that we do not hold it in sneaking affection. It initiated us into the brotherhood of death. Shortly afterwards when we had crossed the border-line back into life, we exchanged, as tokens, bits of the shrapnel which they had extracted from our respective carcases. I have not enqmred what he did with his bit; but I keep mine in a certain locked drawer... There were only the two of us left on the gun when we were knocked out... I should like to tell you the whole story, but you wouldn't listen to me. And no wonder.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Kipling in WW I? By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson Major Duncan Meredyth, late R.F.A., Boer War hero and wheelchair-bound dynamo, finds himself forced to sit on the sidelines of the Great War, doing whatever little trifles his disability allows him to do. As he does his duty by the Empire, and urges those around him to do the same, mysteries seems to bubble around him, in the quiet little town of Wellingsford; deep, disturbing mysteries. This book was a bestseller in 1917 Britain, and I was curious to see if the author realized how the Great War was eroding the values of the Victorian/Edwardian era. Major Meredyth struck me as a latter day Arthur “Stalky” Corkran (a character created by Rudyard Kipling), wedded to martial virtues, duty and honor. That any able bodied man would not rush to the trenches of Flanders is beyond his understanding. The people of Wellingsford who have lost loved ones to the War carry on with stiff upper lips, proud that they have given their all for the great and good Empire. The answer is “No,” the Victorian values of Kipling still stand in the Red Planet. A man’s duty lies in defending the empire, with his soul transported to Valhalla if he dies on the field of honor. No honor is too great for those who served. However, rest assured that the wages of sin must be paid in full, and they can never be dodged for long. But, am I saying that this is a bad book? Definitely not! If you are a fan of Victorian and/or Edwardian literature, then you can rest assured that this is an excellent book, carrying on in the same style. I loved this book (except for the end, which I found a tad contrived), and found myself unable to put it down; I am quite surprised that I never heard of this book before. It is very good, and I highly recommend it to you.

"Servants don’t just happen. We are not born with a natural inclination to serve. We tend to want something repaid for our time and efforts. A young child does not just wake up one morning and say, 'I think I am going to grow up and serve others.'" As a young boy, little does John Basham know, when he is called by God to serve, which path he will be led down, what horrors he will witness when his calling takes him to Africa. Nothing seems to make sense when he sees so much death and destruction around him. How does what he experiences there affect his relationship with God? What does it mean to serve Him? What is God trying to teach John?

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Christian faith and service . . . By Joy Hughes I was offered this book by a third party, as a beta read prior to publication. The author writes from the heart about his Christian faith and the call to serve. He spreads the Christian message through mission work, witnessing his faith to others who may or may not have already been introduced to Christianity. He undertakes his training in the USA and initially his main area of mission is within Africa but in the later stages he serves in other countries away from Africa. His wife Janie also serves as a missioner and in due time, two children are born into the family. The author has written from the heart about the people he served and those who served beside him, of his love for and of the people he served. He also writes of his distress at the horrors he observes in places like Rwanda and Somalia. Through his journey, his wife shows her strength in her work, and backing her husband's call to serve. She is the author's pillar of strength providing support and stability in his life, a life that at times is filled with horrors . . . events and situations the author observes to which no person could possibly be immune. He writes so descriptively about his experiences that perhaps it would be emotionally safe for readers to place limits around pictures formed in their imagination, thus avoiding a form of secondary trauma. The one thing about the book that did surprise me, was the lack of reference to Janie and the children from about the middle of the book, until near the end. I realise it was a book about the author living his faith through service, but given the service of his wife who supported him to continue to serve in Somalia, Rwanda, other parts of Africa and England, there appeared a lack of reference to her in the last half of the book. This was especially noticeable because of the important role she played in serving and living her faith, both before and after the children were born. In the latter stages of the book, the tone changes and it appears the author was more concerned with writing facts, to bring the book to a close. I felt I did not learn much more about the author as a person. It was almost as if all the death and destruction he observed over the years, made him unable to continue personalising his story. In spite of this, I have no hesitation in recommending this book.If you are seeking a book about the niceties of life and not wanting to know the unvarnished truth of various events that are still taking place in parts of Africa, then this book is not for you. If you want to understand the dynamics of Christian service and relate that to humanity, then this book will appeal to you.

Serving is a Pilgrimage … it's not always easy, but it's always worth it By Bob Allen John's book gives great insight into the life and thinking of a missionary who is committed to taking the gospel to some of the most resistant people groups on earth. Using short vignettes from his 30-year career as an international missionary, John illustrates his theme — that serving other people is a process of growth. Most chapters end with a succinct statement clearly showing what God has shown John about service in that particular time in his life. He also shows very clearly that following God's will doesn't mean that life is easy. In fact, it may be quite the opposite, but John affirms that any difficulty, any sacrifice is worth it because of the joy to be found in seeing God work.I've known John since shortly after he and Janie arrived in Kenya to teach at the high school in Mombasa. The stories are true … if anything, he has understated what he has experienced. No matter what they faced, John and Janie courageously and faithfully served God and other people.

I felt like I was there with him in all of his adventures. I admire his attitude toward serving people and sharing his faith with others. He is obviously a man of deep faith in God and has a heart to be directed by God, by being obedient even when he felt incapable. The story telling was done masterfully and it was easily read and understood. I would highly recommend this read to anyone wanting to serve in Africa or to those who has been there, can relate, but did not get into the hard stuff. If you have never been to these parts of that great continent here is a way to see the good, the very good, the bad and the ugly. Thank you John for sharing your story with the world.

PDF Ebook Miguelito leaves Cuba for America: A True Story, by Michael Ruiz Jr.

Miguelito Leaves Cuba for America is a testament to the arduous quest for precious freedom-found in America-and the dear price that a Cuban family has to pay to finally reach the great “melting pot” of the United States. The book is also a picturesque colorful narration of a small happy Cuban familia. This is a very touching story of a little boy growing up in Communist Cuba: his beloved familia, Mama Isela, Papa Miguel, Grandma Maria, friends, dogs, chickens-it was indeed a scary time for Miguelito. But after a long journey on a boat to Africa and then to Nyc, the moving story has a strong moral and a happy ending. This is a book that every American child should read and every family should have on their book shelf at home.

It will serve as an inspiration for immigrant children across the nation who have been wrenched from their homes, and should help others to understand the challenges they face. Mr. Ruiz has created a gem that speaks to our era on many levels.

The first book of Ramon Maiden's considerable body of work Dandy delinquent, artist and wanderlust king, Ramon Maiden has acquired a dedicated following on both sides of the Atlantic for creating that rare thing—a totally original, recognizable aesthetic derived from the traditions of tattoo. Working with old religious prints and magazines, Ramon usurps them with startling inkings which add a whole new dimension to images which might otherwise have been consigned to extinction. Madonnas with serpent tattoos, photos of male torsos in vintage medical books overlain with mystical imagery, and 1930s pinups smiling sweetly yet inked with dragons and daggers, all suggest another, very contemporary, dimension. Maiden is being increasingly fêted, with recent solo shows in NYC and London.

Ernest Hemingway is nearly as famous for his drinking as he is for his writing. Throughout his collected works, Papa's sensuous explorations of the delights of imbibing engaged both his characters and his readers. In To Have and Have Another: A Hemingway Cocktail Companion, Philip Greene, cocktail historian, spirits consultant, and cofounder of the Museum of the American Cocktail, offers us a view of Papa through the lens Papa himself preferred—the bottom of a glass. A bartender’s manual for Hemingway enthusiasts, this revised and expanded volume offers a unique take on Hemingway’s oeuvre that privileges the tastes, smells, and colors of the cocktails he enjoyed and the drinks he placed so prominently in his stories they were nearly characters themselves. To Have and Have Another delivers fascinating and lively background on the various drinks, their ingredients, their histories, and the characters—real and fictional—associated with them. From the Hardcover edition.

To Have and Have Another Revised Edition: A Hemingway Cocktail Companion, by Philip Greene

Review "A fascinating literary-booze study…”

—Washington Post“An interesting read and a must-have for Hemingway lovers and craft bartenders.”

—Kirkus“At a time when cocktail books have become rote, To Have and Have Another by Philip Greene subverts the formula and provides recipe-by-recipe substance to Ernest Hemingway's drinking ways…. [Greene] lets the drinks lead the way but fleshes each one with meticulous detail to round out the pieces of Papa's lusty life.”

—San Francisco Chronicle “Even a casual student of the novelist Ernest Hemingway knows the man liked to drink. But a quick skimming of Philip Greene’s new book, To Have and Have Another: A Hemingway Cocktail Companion, reveals exactly how much the man enjoyed his cups.”

—The New York Times“Might be the next best thing to drinking with Hemingway.”

—Imbibe“Greene, the co-founder of The Museum of the American Cocktail, makes it easy to recreate some of Hemingway’s most memorable literary libations, including the Dripped Absinthe from For Whom the Bell Tolls and the Jack Rose from The Sun Also Rises.”

—Wine Enthusiast“[A]n off-beat and worthy addition to the Papa bookshelf, especially for the imbibers among us.”

—The Florida Book Review“To Have and Have Another is light and engaging, a fast read that works as both a dictionary of cocktails and a reference text on Hemingway's works and personal life.”

—Serious Eats

By Lindsey Kops To say the author did Hemingway justice is a true understatement. This is no ordinary cocktail book, yet an insider's journey into the world of one of the most fascinating world icons, how he lived, how he drank, and all the stories in between that I've never heard of! I recommend this as a gift for the spirit lover, the Hemingway fanatic, storyteller, or history buff - you really can't go wrong. I just bought 8 for the holiday season! I can't wait to start making some of these classic libations. Cheers!

Kennedy The airport lounge full of stranded travelers began to smell like the bull pens in Pamplona as the snow slowly buried Minneapolis in its fluffy sarcophagus. "Two more hours' delay, Ingles", said the shoe-shine boy on his fifth pass over my now-darkened natural canvas all-stars. "You had better take a walk to the bar by Gate 67 before your shoes stiffen up." I looked up from the book I had been reading. A good book. A book filled with hope, and fine stories and memories of days on fishing streams with good whisky and stories of women, some with few clothes. i walked through the corridor to the bar, to a dulled, scratched expanse of wood with filmy rings from travelers departed months ago. I put down the book, opened it, pointed to the page, and said "Remember the Maine. Can you make it? Can you make it cold, and sweet, and with the spirit of Papa looking over your shoulder as you add the absinthe?"......

By Marsh Muirhead Travel back in time, into the pages of the life and lore of Hemingway with a drink in hand: Absinthe in Paris in the 20s, Champagne with bitters and a sugar cube in Stresa, Italy; a Maestro Collins with London dry gin while fishing for marlin out on the Gulf Stream between Key West and Havana. Philip Greene, master mixologist and Hemingway aficionado combines photos, anecdotes, side-bar items about bars, books, and drinking buddies -- and the recipes of course -- in this great book that is a party unto itself. Literary types will appreciate the insights into Hemingway's stories and novels and how the drinks are woven into the tapestry of the writing; serious drinkers will enjoy the historical detail of ingedients -- the what and how people of a certain class drank almost one-hundred years ago. Cheers! Marsh Muirhead - author of Key West Explained - a guide for the traveler
