What Milo Saw, by Virgina Macgregor

Review I defy you not to fall in love with Milo ... What Milo Saw is a reminder to us all that in life, perspective is everything. A modern-day fable and undoubtedly a future classic Clare Mackintosh, author of Sunday Times Top Ten bestselling I Let You Go From the first page, we were hooked ... If you loved The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, this is for you ... Brilliant! ***** Heat A poignant and very clever read - you'll fall in love with Milo! Company Not dissimilar to Christopher in Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. If you enjoyed that book you'll love this one ... A truly heartwarming story of family, love and loyalty ... It might be wise to have a box of tissues at the ready ... Beautifully written and complete with a powerful message, What Milo Saw will make you think, and then pick up the phone to call your mum. Daily Express A life-affirming read ... Warm, wise and insightful Good Housekeeping Sharp, funny and hugely moving, this is a must read Fabulous It is impossible not to fall in love with nine-year-old Milo in this touching novel Stylist The characterisation and dialogue make it easy to feel empathy for the family and readers will cheer Milo on to achieve his goal Sun [An] understated and likeable tale that just might restore your faith in human nature Bella Deals with serious themes including family life and the treatment of the elderly in society. The novel addresses these issues with sensitivity and good humour reminiscent of Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time Irish Tatler A challenging and moving story about the power of love between generations Image magazine Absolutely delightful ... Everyone should read this book; it holds laughter and tears, but above all, it has something similar to a beating heart. This is not a book to be missed! Novelicious A carefully constructed comment on how appearances can be deceiving ... A heart-warming read showing children sometimes know better than grown-ups Press Association It is impossible to resist falling in love with young Milo ... A spectacular story that I will remember for a long time ... I really do recommend it ireadnovels blog

About the Author Virginia Macgregor was brought up in Germany, France and England by a mother who never stopped telling stories. From the moment she was old enough to hold a pen, Virginia set about writing her own, often late into the night - or behind her Maths textbook at school. Virginia was named after two great women, Virginia Wade and Virginia Woolf, in the hope she would be a writer and a tennis star. Her early years were those of a scribbling, rain-loving child who prayed for lightning to strike her tennis coach. After studying at Oxford, Virginia started writing regularly while working as an English Teacher and Housemistress. Virginia lives in Berkshire with her husband, Hugh.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Delightful and Heart-warming By Ashrae This book is right up there as one of my top ten books for this year (and I have read just under 200 at this point). I absolutely loved it and towards the end (about 80%) I was so caught because I wanted to know what happened but, at the same time, I knew that when I got to the end then I would be leaving Milo and I really didn't want to let him go.Milo is nine years old. Since his Dad went, he lives with his mum, Gran and Hamlet the micro-pig. He has a degenerative eye disorder that although restricting his vision having this disorder actually improves his observational skills. He is a wise child, definitely old above his years and he loves looking after Gran even though this means that Hamlet is restricted to living in the garage. Then one day, an accident occurs and Milo's mum decides that it is no longer fair for Milo to be doing so much for Gran at his age and that she needs more than they can provide so, it is decided that Gran goes to live at a care home. Although this now means that Hamlet is free to roam the house, Milo loves Gran so much and also loves taking care of her, not seeing it as a burden at all, and decides that Gran WILL be coming back home. This quest is made all the more important when Milo discovers that things are not at all rosy at the "Forget Me Not" care home.Cue then a whole cast of misfits and very quirky extras to assist Milo with this task. My favourite of these has to be Tripi. He is an illegally employed immigrant chef at the care home so he is, at first, reluctant to get involved but, seeing Milo struggle to get anyone else on-side, he realises that he has to do something. There are also a whole host of colourful care home residents all small parts but each totally distinct and all with their own contribution to the storyline. Nurse Thornhill oozed evilness delightfully. And mum, well, at times she came across as a bit of a wet blanket but then she'd been through a lot and, in her own way, was just trying to do her best by everyone. At times however, I did just want to shake her to wake her up to what was going on with Milo. And Milo, I absolutely adored him. Wise beyond his years but not in a precocious way. Quirky but never sickly he is a determined boy and, once he sets his mind to something he will do everything he can to try achieve it. For a young lad, he has been through a lot and although wise about some things, his underlying naivety and vulnerability does show through. To say that this is a rollercoaster of a read emotion-wise would be an understatement. I laughed, I cried, I cheered, I sneered, I got angry, I even shouted at people in the book. I was pretty much dragged through the wringer and left emotionally drained by the end. I felt like I had gone through the journey with Milo and not been just a simple observer. Not that I am complaining, It was lovely to have that kind of emotional connection with a book. Something I don't usually get with the genres of books I mostly read. All in all, this was a perfectly satisfying read on all counts and I would definitely read another by this author.I received a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. What Milo Saw By S Riaz Nine year old Milo Moon lives in Slipton with his mum Sandy, his beloved Gran Lou (really his father’s grandmother) and his pet pig Hamlet. Milo is a sensitive, caring boy, but his life is not always easy. Milo’s father has left his mother for another woman and now Sandy is struggling to pay the bills and cope with her feelings of depression. She feels that Milo spends too much time caring for Gran and, when Gran sets fire to the kitchen, Sandy decides she has to put her into a nursing home and chooses Forget Me Not; run by the seemingly efficient Nurse Thornhill. As well as these problems, Milo also suffers from a progressive eye disease - Retinitis Pigmentosa, which means that his vision is reduced to a pinhole and that, eventually, he will lose his sight. Before long, Milo is concerned that things are not as wonderful as the glossy pictures of Forget Me Not suggest. He just wants Gran home and for everything to be back as it was, and he is determined to do something about it. This is a warm and moving book with a great cast of characters. There is Tripi, the Syrian chef at the care home, who desperately misses his younger sister and worries constantly about his immigration status, the charming residents of Forget Me Not, lodger Al McCloud and the unkind and bitter Nurse Thornhill. Through it all – bullied at school, hampered by his sight and struggling with the loss of his dad – Milo decides to take matters into his own hands and rescue his Gran from the home. In essence though, this is a novel about family and about taking responsibility – both for others and for yourself.Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review purposes..

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sweet By Kate Vane I decided to stop reading this book. It was too whimsical, too saccharine. It's about a kid! But it was such a fun, easy read I thought I'd read just one more page or maybe a chapter and within a day I'd read the whole thing. This is the story of nine-year-old Milo who has retinitis pigmentosa. His condition means his vision is restricted to a pinhole. Meanwhile, Milo's family is falling apart. His dad has left for another woman and his gran is going into a care home. Milo decides he has to bring his gran back home and that, while he may not be able to see the bigger picture, he is able to focus in on what matters. The story has a cast of quirky characters, from Milo's mum, a beautician who is letting herself go, to Gran and her fellow residents, to a Syrian refugee working as a chef at the care home. And yes, the plot is fairly predictable and the story doesn't bear much relation to reality but along the way Milo does learn about the adult world of secrets and deception and why good people sometimes hurt each other.Mainly though, it's a page-turning, joyfully escapist story. Not saccharine but genuinely sweet.-I received an ARC from the publisher via Netgalley.

What Really Matters: My Life in Stories, captures a time that threatens to be forgotten, a time when families led less complicated lives and bonds were reinforced by simple daily life. Beginning with the story of her immigrant grandparents, Irene Ostroff reveals the strength of family love and security, despite separation, war, illness and hardship. Rather than a chronology of events, she shares intimate details through tales of laughter and sadness. Today at 90 years young, she reveals her own personal philosophy that combines "Humanistic Judaism" and pluralism, with lessons and wisdom for us all.

Being a golf fan and a fan of McIlroy already, I enjoyed this one a lot. I found it fascinating reading the trials and tribulations endured lead to his success. Great example of handwork and dedication!

Highly Uninspiring By Roland Hall I don't tend to write reviews, however this item could not have been more disappointing and I feel needed an honest review. The title as published on the actual cover should act as a warning if nothing else does: RORY MCILROY: The Inspirational Story of Tennis Superstar Rory McIlroy. And it doesn't get much better from there; poorly written and incredibly brief (31 pages in total given to the subject matter - small pages and big writing). To anyone considering buying this item I strongly suggest saving your money.

“I believe we all have a story to tell. It’s like our shadow: it follows us all through our days.” Grace knew she had reached crisis point. Continuing along the same path would lead to destruction; giving up was unthinkable. The only option left was to fight for full recovery. One has three options when subjected to severe and on-going abuse: death, psychosis or dissociation, according to psychologists J. and H. Watkins. Grace had developed Dissociative Identity Disorder (formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder) as a result of horrific childhood abuse. She survived, but suffered years of painful struggle and a series of mental breakdowns before finding a psychologist whom she could trust to help integrate her identities. This is the story of one remarkable woman’s journey from fear and despair to health and happiness - a true story of courage, determination and above all dignity.

Shining Ones: Legacy of the Sidhe, by Sanna Hines

Review "An entertaining, well-crafted story with unusually complex and entrancing characters."--Kirkus ReviewsWhen 16-year-old Cory sees his girlfriend Lia walk into a cave and vanish, he is better prepared than most teenagers because Cory is Danann, a descendant of the Shining Ones, the Fair Folk of Irish legend. Cory calls his aunt Tessa, a police detective (also Danann), and the two plunge into the passageway...on a sacred quest ordained by the eldest Danann and the Shining Ones....Hines deftly weaves a fascinating tale wrapped around a wide range of strong characters.

From the Author Shining Ones is NOT a children's book. It's intended for teens through adults. (Characters range in age from 15 to 3000+.) The story combines elements I love most: mystery, fantastic abilities, travel, ancient places, a treasure hunt, and characters forced to become their best selves. How they learn to trust and value each other forms the heart of the story. This is true of the villains as well as the heroes. As the Kirkus reviewer said, "She gamelyportrays characters on both sides of the conflict; they're not evil, but drivenby what they think is right, however questionable their justifications may be."

From the Back Cover Cop-shapeshifter Tessa Holly won't ever grow old. Descended from Ireland's fairy race, the Tuatha dé Danann (Clan of Danu), she'll enjoy long life and spectacular abilities. This legacy comes with a price: Her life will never be her own. Tessa's Clan will choose her friends, career and husband. But when her brother and a human girl are seized by ancient Formorian enemies bent on stealing Danann longevity, the Clan goes silent. By Patricia A Webb Imagine ancient Irish deities transported into our modern world to recruit modern people into a battle for magical gifts and talents. From the first pages of the book, the reader is vaulted into ancient rivalries, renewed by kidnappings, deceit, and rituals. The story is fast-paced, and the characters are appealing and complex. A reader who is familiar with Irish lore will appreciate the author’s attention to historical detail and imaginative bringing-to-life of well-known characters, but an unfamiliar reader will also be fascinated by the weaving of the story with 21st century culture. I recommend this to anyone who loves fantasy, thrillers, and realistic fiction—this book is the perfect blend of all three!

Souter Rich in Irish folklore and peppered with a complex set of characters, Shining Ones takes the reader from today’s world of smart phones and jet travel to the land of ancient Celtic clan rivalry. The book opens with a kidnapping, followed by deceptions, murder, and a set of unique challenges faced by both shape shifters and their human allies. A fascinating look at Ireland’s landscape, its mythologies and ancient traditions reignited in the Twenty-first century.

Set in Ireland, Wales and Northern England. Now imagine is it was written by Stephen King. That’s the best description of this book I can think of.I’ve always found King so thoroughly readable. He’s like catching up with an old raconteur friend in a quiet beer garden, somebody you trust can tell a good story that you can relax and chuckle with over their insight into human nature before they hint at the danger tapping at the window pane on the other side of the closed curtains.Gaiman is great at inserting the most human aspects of people into utterly fantastical situations, the big ideas that keep getting bigger, but are grounded by characters so utterly real you’re not sure if they’re based on friends of yours or yourself. He’s like that great teacher from school who could bring to life Classical Rome, Medieval England, Greek Myth and the South Bank of Tudor London and really get you invested to such an extent, you felt like you could write a postcard at the end of the lesson.Gaiman and King are very alike in making the strange completely identifiable. But they are also rather different. With King it’s easy to recognise his characters and place them on the stage he has built for them, to recognise the world he is working within. Gaiman always suggests there’s more to his characters than you will ever know, more to the world than you could ever help to understand. You may completely disagree, so good for you.Sanna Hines brings the muscularity and clarity of King’s prose to the expansive world of Gaiman. This is a story about a group of friends and family, some of whom happen to be faery folk, some of whom know their history and the skills that entails, some of whom are still learning or are completely unaware. On the other side, their Foe, also very faery-like but lacking the mortal longevity. The world in which Ms Hines’ characters frolic is grounded in the modern day but has the rich heritage of Celtic folklore to play with. At no point do you doubt the author’s research, but it never feels like she is giving you some dry lesson verbatim from a well-thumbed school text book. (I learnt most of my Celtic and Faery lore from the comic character Slaine in 2000AD, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream – and Gaiman’s version too – and, as every British schoolboy surely has to on fear of being run through with a rapier – the tales of King Arthur I would consume in any medium). The two sides, Foe and Faery, have very different ideas on how to interact with our world, and this leads them into conflict with each other. Both sides have good points to make, and due to their races’ past histories, interactions and adventures, they can’t help but distrust each other leading to thousands of years of intrigue and war.As there is magic, shape-shifting, fantastic skills and enchanted weaponry at hand, these clashes can take many different forms, and Ms Hines handles these battles with incredible aplomb. You can easily follow the action and as you genuinely care for the characters, the stakes are high. And the characters, especially of the group of ‘good guys’, are a joy to be around. Brooding billionaires, arrogant scientists, young cops desperate to do the right thing, teenagers still finding their feet, parents desperate to protect their children, children desperate for their parent’s vindication – they are all very real and miles away from cliché. Even the more divine, powerful characters (that one could call gods, I guess) are rather identifiable, as is the broad cast of supporting characters that pop up to aid or thwart our friends in their quest. And a quest is what it is all about. Four things need to be found to stop the bad guys. But it is so much more than that.As you may be able to tell, I loved this book. There are a few foibles which are just nit-picking. Sometimes the bad guys seem to be just “bad”, but as you get to know them, you realise their pasts and aspirations have twisted them into people they may not want to be. I hope as the series progresses, for this is just the first book, there will be a little more nuance to the Foe.The ending has a lot to do, and due to alternate names for some characters, some of which sound alike or are akin to the names of the magic weapons that people are using, it can become a little overwhelming (or I may have been tired – I couldn’t sleep until I’d finished it). There were some big ideas that didn’t need tidying up if there is a second book coming, and other flags that suggest where the next book will go that felt a little crammed in.But all the characters we care about have their own endings that make sense (it’s a lot more satisfying than that but I want to avoid spoilers.)The cover, whilst beautiful, and the title itself, in my opinion, do not suit the book. They would appear to suggest more a children’s collection of fairy tales than an exciting romp through an epoch-spanning conflict between gods and monsters, magical beings and broken families and a really realistic and touching love story.Ah, the love story. Once again, it would be too spoilery to discuss further but the author doesn’t shy away from the internal dialogue of our lead, the flirting that turns to something deeper, and the associated paranoia as attraction becomes something more.I can’t stress enough how much I enjoyed this book. I usually write notes when I need to review work, but I only managed one page as I was so wrapped up in it. I also don’t generally need to worry about spoilers but this story warrants it so I don’t tread on any other reader’s expectations. It’s hard to believe this is Ms Hines’ second full length work of fiction. 96% of this book is without doubt a 5/5. It’s the tiniest confusion (probably on my part) at the end that knocks is off the perfect 5/5 for me, but it’s an extremely high 4.And finally, apologies for the length of the review, I know you need to get on, but there’s one line I realised I’ve always wanted to read in a novel, but I hadn’t known this until the phrase appeared on the page. If this doesn’t get you, nothing will.“Make haste to the boats!”Well, fair reader, make haste to the Shining Ones. You won’t be disappointed.

Review "5.0 out of 5 star This book has all the elements of an exciting motion picture screenplay.By Clark E. Hodges on December 19, 2015Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseI am impressed with this wonderful book written by Mr. John Graden. This book speaks with truth, from the heart. Sometimes, the truth is a hard, dark and uncomfortable subject and Mr. Graden has presented this with grace and respect.Yes, I was there and I can tell everyone that the writer is spot-on with the story line and I was VERY IMPRESSED with his point of view while relating the sometimes shocking stories that were the "facts of life" of Walt Bone, Debbie Bone and Mr. Mike Anderson among others. This book is as exciting as any motion picture thriller. It is biographical, historical, exciting, thrilling, and tragic all at the same time. John Graden has done the world a favor by writing this insightful book. The fact that Mr. John Graden is one of the greatest karate and martial arts instructors and a world-class champion himself, make "Who Killed Walt Bone" a legitimate "must read" for ALL who love a great book that reads like a fictional thriller, but is the history of a true legend... By Jungle Clark I was impressed with this wonderful book written by Mr. John Graden on the history of Florida Karate Academy's legendary Walt Bone. But, this book isn't only "legend", it's speaks with truth, from the heart. Sometimes, the truth is a hard, dark and uncomfortable subject and Mr. Graden has presented this with grace and respect. I earned the rank of 1st Dan Black Belt under Richard Jenkins, Walt Bone and Hank Farrah of Florida Karate Academy, and I remember John and his brothers well and, even though they were "kids", all of them had a discipline that everyone admired.Yes, I was there and I can tell everyone that the writer is spot-on with the story line and I was VERY IMPRESSED with his point of view while relating the sometimes shocking stories that were the "facts of life" of Walt Bone, Debbie Bone and Mike Anderson among others.Even though "I was there", after reading this book I still learned MUCH more that I DIDN'T know! This book is as exciting as any motion picture thriller. It is biographical, historical, exciting, thrilling, tragic and elating all at the same time.I am proud to have known Mr. Graden, and he has done the world a favor by writing this insightful book on one of the world's greatest karate champions. The fact that Mr. John Graden is one of the greatest karate and martial arts instructors and a world-class champion himself, make "Who Killed Walt Bone" a legitimate "must read" for ALL who love a great book that reads like a fictional thriller, but is the history of a true legend... Walt Bone.

By Richard W Jenkins Personally knowing Walt Bone from his earliest color belt days training at the Texas Karate Institute school I ran for Allen Steen, in Dallas, to St.Louis, where he ran one of our Black Belt Karate Association schools, to our trip together with Debbie, to St.Petersburg, Florida, where we found and opened the first Florida Karate Academy school in Seminole, at a space that had been an appliance store, then the St.Pete school, and the last in Largo, Florida.I know and knew the main characters in this book for many years before its author began training, and afterwards to this day.Walt Bone was Fred Wren's student and mine, my friend, and my business partner, as was Debbie Bone. This is a marvelously written history of Walt and Debbie, from the early days of the Florida Karate Academy, until Walt's death, in 1982.There is no doubting its accuracy from first to final page, except Its author will have to vouch for its validity in his personal family life. What I can vouch for is how brilliant John Graden's literary prowess is, and how much of it he applied in writing this amazing account of karate and those individuals involved in the story, the circumstances, and lifestyles.KUDOS to Mr. Graden on a job well done, which proves he's not just another pretty face.READ THIS BOOK and add it to your library … it's a story you'll never forget, and one you will not be able to put down until it's finished!Richard W. JenkinsHouston, Texas

This is a story of a young man who finds himself in the art of karate, how his life is led and led astray by the instructor he idolizes. He writes very candidly and recreates the boyhood enthusiasm that gripped him when he began his journey in the martial arts. Mr. Graden brings back to life the karate scene in the late 1970s and his relationships with some of the key figures of that era (Joe Lewis, Mike Anderson, etc.). What is important in this book is how martial arts helped shape him to become the man he is today, a very respected figure in the American karate scene. His story should be read not only as authentic karate history but as a reminder that if one learns from the obstacles he has run into, one can overcome all obstacles. This is an inspirational book that should be required reading for all young and aspiring karate students.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Will Power's Willpower... By A. Marbach First off, I use to be hard core into IndyCar driving back when the series was called CART. When the series broke up to form IRL and CHAMP I kind of drifted back to NASCAR for my fandom. Now I am a devout NASCAR (Tony Stewart) fan yet I am a still a casual fan of IRL. If there is race on and I don’t have anything better to do I will watch it. Of course this holds true any time any type of motorsports- the other day I was watching dirt bikes because it was the only racing I could find, but I digress. So I “know” the IRL drivers in that, I know their names, car number, sponsors…the basics. But I don’t know their stories. This book gave me the chance to dive into Will Power’s story and get to know Will on a deeper level. But I don’t think you have to be a Will Power fan to appreciate his story. The book starts off with him growing up a child who “played racing” as a child. Of course it didn’t hurt that his father was a grassroots racer in Australia. It follows his career through his eyes and the eyes of those closest to him, including his family and close friends. It spans the course of his racing from a young boy in Toowoomba Australia (and now I know where the name of my favorite dish at the Outback comes from) as an up and coming driver in Australia, to his move to England for F1 and then eventually to America and then to Indy car and everything in between. The book aptly covers both the extreme highs of winning a championship and the lowest of lows throughout different points in Will’s carrer. There are parts of Will’s career that will ring true to any racer, any style of motorsports- especially his early struggles to attain much needed sponsorship money as an early racer in Australia, to what could have been a terrible career ending injury at Sonoma Raceway. And then there is living the horrifying accident at Las Vegas Motor Speedway that took fellow driver Dan Wheldon’s life through Will’s eyes. Let’s just say it was a good thing I wasn’t wearing mascara when I read that chapter. Now for the book itself: The Sheer Force of Will Power is a lovely hard bound (also available in e-book format) book with 352 pages and includes two sections of color photos spanning Will Power’s career. It also contains a fairly extensive glossary- so don’t let the difference in open wheel and stock car racing vernacular worry you if you are a NASCAR fan as many of my readers are.I highly recommend this book for Will Power fans, IRL fans, and motorsports fans in general because I think that everyone will get something out of this book.(part or all of the above review originally appeared on badgroove.com)

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. True Muay Thai Boran By Joseph Cisneros This is an excellent book for anyone interested in martial arts. This book is about Muay Thai Boran not the form that most people are familiar with, but made popular by Martial art Movie star Tony Jaa. It starts out with a detailed account of how they gathered information about the Martial Arts of Thailand. Then it goes into an explanation of the development of the art/sport of Muay Thai, and the different regions of Thailand having their own styles for the art. At the end is where the author explains moves and combos based on the traditional Muay Thai Boran, which is different from the Muay Thai form that most people recognize. Overall it is a very interesting read and an amazing source of history and information for this relatively unknown form.

If I'm not mistaken the original was written in Italian. The content of the book is informative if you can get pass the direct to English translation. In addition, The book feels like a compilation of articles that the author had published in magazine. Therefore, it didn't really have a good flow from one chapter to another.I was expecting a bit more pictures illustrating the Muay Boran Technique along with explanation. There are a few, but not as much and clear as I like.I would've given it a 4 star if it weren't for the stuff I mentioned above. In any case, a good collection to have in the book case if you collect martial arts books.

The Perfect Step-by-Step Manual On Training/Living in Thailand By C Huynh This is the ultimate resource for anyone wanting to train, or even just travel, to Thailand. The author thoroughly explains what sets Thailand apart from all the other popular training destinations. Then he explains how to make it all possible. Reading this book is like having an inspirational and motivational conversation with a friend, professional fighter, coach, manager, travel agent, and Thai local, all-in-one. There is no other resource available that even comes close to the knowledge Kesler provides.Kesler goes in depth on which cities are best for training, what the top gyms are, where to eat, Thai culture, how not to be taken advantage of, etc. More importantly, he outlines the financials of it all. He details the avenues available to finance your stay, as well as documents his every expense and budget.Like I said before, there's just no other resource that can touch the breadth and depth of knowledge you'll find in this book!

Alyssa Whether you are a Muay Thai athlete or just someone who wants to try something different to stay in shape, this book caters to all different kinds of Muay Thai enthusiasts. The author knows what he is talking about, having studied the sport in Thailand for many years. This book primarily focuses on training techniques and training plans for beginners and experts. Instructions are clear and easy to follow and after reading the introduction chapters you just want to start training. What I personally liked was that this book is not all about the physical training, but it is also going into detail about the mindset you have to be in when you want to start your Muay Thai training. It really makes you understand where you have to stand to take on this sport, if it's for your benefit and in your own home only or if you want to become a professional fighter.Other than the training plans and exercises, this book is also filled with lots of interesting facts about the sport.Had a great time with this book.

Great book, I recommend it as a fighter myself By Michael H Having lived in Thailand for the last 8 years and training Muay Thai I can relate to many aspects of the book. With myself a digital nomad I know how cheap and easy it is to live here while earning a western wage.Brandon gives great detail in most aspects of his writing, letting you know that you can stay here long term, you just have to plan it right. I ave been to China and made some decent money so everything is possible. As a fighter myself Thailand is the best place to come to learn muay thai at the best rates for anywhere in the world.

Prince Liam of Broskoe will no longer bow to his mother’s outrageous orders. Because of his speech impairment, the result of a childhood illness, most people— including the queen— believe him to be a half-wit. Neglected in his upbringing, Liam has learned to take what he wants, by whatever means necessary, be it a lover, an education, or secret training as a spy. Forced into hiding, he flees to neighboring Doros and gets work in the kitchen of the castle keep.

Finley, Duke of Doros, finds himself between a rock and a hard place. The King of Carsson has once again demanded an increase to the annual levy, and Doros’s resources are dwindling due to a poor harvest, worsened by early snows. Not even he, the mightiest of warriors, can stop winter from coming early, but he will not stand by and watch his people starve.

Two men— two lonely hearts— meet under the strangest of circumstances. Each learns to grapple with formidable enemies: not only the forces of Mother Nature, but the darker aspects of human nature. They must overcome greed, lust, loneliness, and betrayal, as well as their own insecurities, if they are to find that one thing that makes life worth all the trouble.

DETERMINED is a romance inspired by the nineteenth-century German tale Allerleirauh, written by the brothers Grimm. The most common English translation for this title is All-Kinds-of-Fur.

WARNING: In addition to depictions of violent combat and death, which some readers may find objectionable, this book contains graphic sex scenes and is unsuitable for underage readers.

By Tex Reader 3.5 of 5 stars –I love gay fantasy and romances, and for me, the retelling of a Grimm fairy tale increased my attraction, and I'd say I was satisfied with the read. This had all the hallmarks of a "romance" novel, with the addition of some scenes that were a little more racy, which was fine by me. I was curious and read a little about the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, "A Cloak of All Furs", and this m/m reinvention followed the original storyline fairly closely, with of course the nice gay twist. The story kept me interested, particularly the addition of the spying part (which wasn't part of Grimm).Bealevon Nolan's writing was easy to read, nicely descriptive, and moved along at a pretty good pace. I did feel, though, that particularly early on, there was more telling the story, rather showing, saying and doing. But it eventually turned into a good story with suspense, and I got wrapped up in the relationship that appealed to the romantic in me.I did have to keep in mind that this was a romance, and a fairy tale at that, so for the sake of enjoying the story I did give some leeway - for example, I liked the MCs but their characters weren't deeply developed, there was some implausibility in the relationships along with some rather convenient circumstances ***(such as the whole set up that required them to strip and warm themselves)***, the court politics and machinations were fairly simple and not too involved (thus not as intriguing), ***the incestual desires of the mother came out of nowhere and handled awkwardly***, and it was a bit unrealistic that an intelligent and aware guy like Finley, at his mature age, would be completely oblivious to and then suddenly attracted to men; it just doesn't happen that way among guys.A bonus as part of this romance were the multiple sex scenes that were mostly well told, especially later on ***with the lovemaking on their wedding night*** being particularly descriptive and passionate. The scenes made sense, weren't too many, and generally fit in well with the story, which drew me in all the more.Upon reflection, the title can have many meanings - a determined prince, a determined duke, determined as in a future determined for you, or determined as by fate - and it was nice how all this played out into a fun reinvention of a fairy tale.[Thanks to the author and Goodreads' Don't Buy My Love program for a free copy in exchange for an honest review]

Thank you Ms. Nolan for offering up your story. This story is based on a well-known fairy tale: Peau d'âne written by Charles Perrault in France and its variant Allerleirauh written by Jacob Grimm and his brother in Germany. I was surprised in the comments of some other readers that it is not very well known outside Europe. The original story is about incest but here it is not the main topic just the starting point of the book (linked to the Queen's madness).A romance that begins as a fairy tale and will carry us into a historical world full of adventures, conspiracies, fighting, death and of course love. It is well-written, easy and pleasant to read despite a few scenes with some violence (but which have their place in the context of the story).I really like Finley, he is interesting, endearing and credible. But I have some reluctances about Liam... he makes me think of a character’s caricature (he looks like more a sex maniac than a prince at the beginning). Luckily he improves a bit at the end! There are also a few interesting and endearing secondary characters (who would also deserve to have their own story written). There are many interesting things in this book: the historical aspect (I think that story takes place in the middle ages), exciting adventures, full of suspense and well told for each of the characters and a few love scenes (just what it should be… neither too much or too little). I enjoyed reading this book and would have like a sequel.

Fun By Delaney This book was given to me for free in exchange for an honest review.Liam, the prince of Broskoe, is on the run from his mother the Queen, who has suggested a very screwed up proposition. His mother believes Liam is a simpleton because of a speach impediment from a childhood illness. She treats him like a child and with disgust, and therefore so do many others. When he comes of age to train as a warrior he is forbidden, but some believe in him and he is secretly trained as a spy. While on the run he ends up disguising himself as a mute servant female at Finley, the Duke of Doros home. Finley has problems of his own keeping his people from starvation due to an alliance with a traitorious king. Liam has his sights on Finley from the start and comes up with an unconventional way of getting his attention. Due to certain circumstances situations change and difficulties are overcome. Both characters are well written. And the secondary characters are fantastic. The only problem I had was that I thought to myself (several times) that both Liam and Finley had their minds on sex when they should have been on taking care of business. Some things in the story (like a Duke traveling without his own guard and leaving someone he doesn't know in charge of his home and people) were unbelievable. That being said I did have a good time reading this. The premise of the story was new and had some interesting twist. It also had a lot going on and moved along at a nice pace. I'll definately give this author another look.

Excerpt from A Mummer's TaleThe scene was an actress's dressing-room at the Odéon.Félicie Nanteuil, her hair powdered, with blue on her eyelids, rouge on her cheeks and ears, and white on her neck and shoulders, was holding out her foot to Madame Michon, the dresser, who was fitting on a pair of little black slippers with red heels. Dr. Trublet, the physician attached to the theatre, and a friend of the actress's, was resting his bald cranium on a cushion of the divan, his hands folded upon his stomach and his short legs crossed."What else, my dear?" he inquired of her."Oh, I don't know!" Fits of suffocation; giddiness; and, all of a sudden, an agonizing pain, as if I were going to die. That's the worst of all.""Do you sometimes feel as though you must laugh or cry for no apparent reason, about nothing at all?"About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Crabtree Jealousy, theater, joy, church, affairs, revenge, tragedy, stalking, suicide, and much more can be found herein!A young man is quite amourous toward a gregarious, young stage actress but she leads him on. He's also burdened with a solid competitor for her affections. The young man's emotional journey, tenoned with the shrewd and subtle humor of the work, will hold the reader's attention to the very end.The author, Anatole France, (a pseudonym for Jacques Anatole Thibault, 1844-1924), was one of the great novelists of his day. He was a very prolific writer in the mainstream of French classicism."A Mummer's Tale," (aka, "Histoire Comique") was written in 1903 but remains timeless in its certainty to entertain those who enjoy a good, solid novel. If you're a bit apathetic about the dreary selection of novels on the current market, this fine story might just make you a huge fan of Anatole France.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A masterwork of readable late-1800s literature! By Patrick W. Crabtree Here, we have a fine novel, not much heard of, by a Master of the light fiction genre. I don't know why it hasn't caught on like wildfire other than, perhaps, the academics at the various colleges have somehow overlooked it and have thus not promoted it to students. It's the story of two prospective lovers of a woman, a vain theater actress, who is also a bit of a tease. One of these fellows lusts for her moreso than the second, (the more confident of the two), which leads the former down a path of dubious decisions. The actress, being a tease and not a big thinker as well, will leave MEN who read this book wishing to strangle her just a little and from time to time. *.*But that is the beauty of this book -- the reader becomes engaged in the action from the very start. This is the Hallmark of France's craft-work.This volume work pretty much offers up all the reasons that we read great fiction including, drama, love, religion, jealousy, and, in this instance, suicide -- a really shocking one.So, about the time you feel that you've read all that is worth reading, try this one and you'll have found yet another. I really thoroughly enjoyed this one.
