There were once four children who spent their summer holidays in a white house, happily situated between a sandpit and a chalkpit. One day they had the good fortune to find in the sandpit a strange creature. Its eyes were on long horns like snail's eyes, and it could move them in and out like telescopes. It had ears like a bat's ears, and its tubby body was shaped like a spider's and covered with thick soft fur—and it had hands and feet like a monkey's. It told the children—whose names were Cyril, Robert, Anthea, and Jane—that it was a Psammead or sand-fairy. (Psammead is pronounced Sammy-ad.) It was old, old, old, and its birthday was almost at the very beginning of everything. And it had been buried in the sand for thousands of years. But it still kept its fairylikeness, and part of this fairylikeness was its power to give people whatever they wished for. You know fairies have always been able to do this. Cyril, Robert, Anthea, and Jane now found their wishes come true; but, somehow, they never could think of just the right things to wish for, and their wishes sometimes turned out very oddly indeed. In the end their unwise wishings landed them in what Robert called 'a very tight place indeed', and the Psammead consented to help them out of it in return for their promise never never to ask it to grant them any more wishes, and never to tell anyone about it, because it did not want to be bothered to give wishes to anyone ever any more. At the moment of parting Jane said politely—'I wish we were going to see you again some day.'And the Psammead, touched by this friendly thought, granted the wish.

Nesbit completed her best known trilogy of fantasy books with The story of the Amulet. It returns us to the lives of the brothers and sisters we met in Five Children and It and The Phoenix and the Carpet. But the tone is darker and the freedom from adult observation is due to lonelyness rather than holiday freedoms, as was the case in the earlier novels. The children's parents are in danger of their life, and they find themselves faced with the chance to help when they meet the iracible Psammiad again. It leads them to a time travelling amulet, which might have the power to grant them their hearts desire.Much of the charm of this book comes from the realism of the children's characters. No matter that they dress in the plus fours and petticoats of the Edwardian age, their bickering and wonder in the face of magical events makes them timeless.A marvelous book, and a farewell to a familier group of children hovering on the verge of adulthood.

I suggest that anyone interested start with Five Children and It, which is even better. I would recommend this book to anyone!

14 of 19 people found the following review helpful. 80 out of 100 By Caitlin I liked "The Story of the Amulet", by Edith Nesbit. It is a well written and thought-provoking book. The children introduced in "The Five Children and It" and seen again in "The Pheonix and the Carpet" are back once more to finish the trio. As in "The Pheonix and the Carpet", this is a travelling book. However in this book the children travel in both time and space to search for the other half of an amulet that, when joined, will give the children their heart's desire. I removed a star for a few reasons. One, out of the five books by Nesbit that I have read, this is ranked 5th. That is not to say that this was a bad book. It's just that I thought the other ones were better. Two, I like the books where the characters are granted wishes best, as in "The Five Children and It". However, I would recommend this book to anyone who likes magical happenings, time travel, and those who liked other Edith Nesbit books.

A road trip about memory, mateship and mortality.

It was late afternoon and a few of us were sitting about in the sun having a drink on my birthday when the friend I've known the longest sat down opposite and looked at me like he was going to say something serious.

He was, and he got straight to it. He had health issues, he said, in a tone that put the issues word in ironic quotes. He'd been to see his doctor the previous day. He had maybe a year, he said. Maybe a bit more.

I was so shocked by what he told me that, after an initial gasp, I said the only thing that seemed to make any sense to me in the circumstances. We should go away for a road trip, I blurted out.

He nodded as if he knew I was going to say that. Back south, he said.

Yeah, I said back to him.

South meant Southland, where our story started, 46 years earlier. And that was the end of that conversation. Within weeks the trip was all booked and ready to roll. I felt nervous.

A road trip about memory, mateship and mortality, into the heartland of a New Zealand that still exists and still surprises.

I found myself tearing up over and over again at God's miraculous love and rescue from hopelessness. Every story and chapter inspired me to let go of my fears, my past, and to put complete trust in the Lord for my future.~ Susanne Johnson, Police Special Services Wendy's life journey reminds me of the Hebrews living in Egypt in the days of Moses. They underwent traumatic experiences as helpless slaves. As they cried to God for help, God heard their groaning and sent Moses to rescue and liberate them. He protected them and exposed them to His laws as He prepared them to enter the Promised Land. It seems that is what God has done in Wendy's life! The grace and mercy and loving-kindness of the Almighty poured out into such broken lives. And into the middle sections of this book, the amazement grows at seeing the hand and work of the Holy One move in even minute and intricate ways, bringing a sense of purpose and a deeper and deeper trust that can only grow from truly experiencing loss and rebuilding a shattered life. Her ability to relive the moments and articulately invite her captured audience through the doors of each breath-taking chapter By Elizabeth Welsh Cousins Nicole Clarke' ability to capture Maelanii’s attention and connect to the vast untapped reservoir lying dormant within this child is exceptional. Her ability to relive the moments and articulately invite her captured audience through the doors of each breath-taking chapter is brilliant. This has kept her readers’ interests peeked and mesmerized at her unlimited creativity in fostering a warm and safe place for the birthing of the meritorious student within this child. This is substantiation of Ms. Clarke's work, skills and dedication as an Educator. Well done Ms. Clarke!!.

This story affirms one of the educational truism: most students need an advocate, someone who believes that they can. Oftentimes, for a struggling student to become successful, she needs someone to assist her in silencing those feelings of self doubt. This story is an affirmation that all students can learn in the correct supportive environment. I think it is a must read for any child who needs some motivation to continue doing her best and any parent who searches for the right educator to assist her child.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Inspiring, Encouraging, and Reinvigorating! By Amazon Customer I love this book! What an encouraging story of a fragile, discouraged, and discontented child whose life could be changed by the simple investment of a teacher! As an educator, I'm encouraged and reinvigorated by this story. We can't lose sight of the root of it all-the kids. Many kids and teachers get caught in this testing-driven world and get burned out or discouraged by the stress. We can't afford to become assessment monsters with no heart! This book reminded me that I can still impact my students for the good with small investments like writing letters of encouragement to them and has inspired me to do so this year. Already- I've seen a difference that it's made!

This is a far cry from your father's stuffy, effete how-to book on fly fishing. It assumes you're not a wealthy snob who understands Latin, but it does expect you to have a sense of humor and the willingness to give this wonderful pastime a try. And if you are a Latin-speaking snob, I hope you read it anyway - it's never too late to be cured of that unpleasant affliction. Written for beginners interested in one of life’s greatest pastimes, Basic Fly Fishing for the Reasonably Competent is a simple, step-by-step guide that provides everything you need to know to master the basics—with no unnecessary information, no complicated diagrams and none of the high-brow Latin terminology found in most fly fishing books. You won’t need a degree in fish and bug science to master the art of fly fishing—you just need to be curious (and reasonably competent). Basic Fly Fishing for the Reasonably Competent delivers common sense instruction on the why, how, when and where of fly fishing. Combining the author’s 50+ years of fly fishing, a crisp writing style and a sense of humor, this book is all the novice needs to quickly be throwing artful casts using the right flies with a reasonable chance of catching a fish.

About the Author Jerry O’Connell has been fly fishing since he was 12. Following a career in the software industry in New England, Jerry has become active in the restoration and preservation of Montana’s Big Blackfoot River. He founded The Big Blackfoot Riverkeeper program where he is executive director, and is a board member of the Big Blackfoot Chapter Trout Unlimited. Great for technical instruction as well as the fun of it By Adam Robinson In full disclosure, I helped design this book for print, but it wasn't until I ordered my copy and really dug into Jerry O'Connell's masterful understanding of fly fishing that I really appreciated it. It's written for the "reasonably competent" -- ie. not dummies -- and even though I don't think I'll ever be able to take up fly fishing, this book made me want. It seems like a fully immersive, challenging and rewarding sport. This book totally demystifies it (while respecting the artistry as it's presented in "A River Runs Through It," which is quoted a lot in these pages). I was surprised at how, er, competently O'Connell can write about things even as technical as tying knots.

With unparalleled access to the recruits, coaches, and gurus shaping football’s future, Bruce Feldman has written a modern-day tale about the making of the next superstars in the game’s most important position: the quarterback. In the world of modern football, with NFL teams worth more than a billion dollars, no position defines a franchise like the quarterback. The QB is the story of a year in the making of those star players, and of the most significant year in QB development in sport’s history… with the meteoric rise of various quarterback gurus finally coming to light. George Whitfield, profiled in the New Yorker and called the “Quarterback Whisperer,” gets a regular spot on ESPN’s College GameDay, Trent Dilfer, former Super Bowl quarterback, starts his own qb business, Steve Clarkson, another qb maker, gets profiled on 60 minutes, among many others. It is also the year 5’10” Russell Wilson wins the Super Bowl and for the first time in over 60 years a sub-6-foot QB, Johnny Manziel, gets drafted in the first round, forcing NFL power brokers to re-examine how they look at the position—and the game.          To tell the story of all that goes on to create the perfect quarterback, bestselling author Bruce Feldman gained unique access to "Johnny Football" (that's Johnny Manziel), George Whitfield and many other players in what has become a specialized and high-stakes business. In the past decade the boom of the private quarterback-coach business, with its pageant-world-for-boys vibe, has changed the position and the game. The QB tells the story of the interlocking paths of the most fascinating characters involved in this secretive world, examining how advanced analysis has taken root in football. Manziel’s portrait is the most intimate look at him yet, detailing all his talents and antics.  His guru is a man who has come to be known for making QBs--George Whitfield, unparalleled in the business. And then there is Trent Dilfer, the quarterback who never could get to the superstar level, despite winning the Super Bowl.  He is the Salieri to Manziel's Mozart. There is the computer/brain analysis company trying to quantify how playmakers think, the biomechanics expert who saved Drew Brees’s career, and many more fascinating behind-the-scenes looks into this world. Never before has the game so relied on the development of the quarterback. In The QB, the stories of these men illustrate how high the stakes of the quarterback’s game really are, taking readers on a compelling journey into the heart of America's beloved game. From the Hardcover edition.

The QB: The Making of Modern Quarterbacks, by Bruce Feldman

Review

“Whether it's your NFL team or your fantasy team, nothing will make or break the franchise like picking your quarterback. In The QB, Bruce Feldman offers unprecedented, and at times counterintuitive, insight into what to look for in the NFL QB of the future.”—Matthew Berry, ESPN Senior Fantasy Sports Analyst and New York Times best-selling author of Fantasy Life "From Pop Warner all the way to the NFL, football has never been more ‘Quarterback-centric’ than it is today, and the player under center has never had more responsibility—or scrutiny. Bruce Feldman's ingenious book delves deeper into all aspects of the position than has ever been explored before. It's enlightening, illuminating, and shows how some outside-the-box thinking can change the game.”—Charles Davis, NFL Network Draft Analyst & FOX Sports College Football Commentator"Bruce Feldman knows his way around football and locker rooms as well as anyone I know. His understanding of the intricacies of the sports and of reporting is why a book like this one is a wonderful read."—John Feinstein, best-selling author of Next Man Up and A Good Walk Spoiled"One of the most brilliant writers in the business, Bruce Feldman offers a remarkable look at the making of a quarterback in The QB. This book also provides a fascinating glimpse into the human nature of some of the game’s biggest names, and will inform and entertain both the hardcore and casual football fan. It’s Feldman’s best book yet.”—Brett McMurphy, ESPN College Football Insider"Bruce Feldman has an uncanny ability to show in rich detail the guts of the real world of football. When this game consumes you it's easy to notice the rare insider who finds the angles others can hardly see. That's Bruce!"—Joe Tessitore, ESPN play-by-play commentator, host of the SEC Network’s SEC Nation“There are lots of sports reporters but very few great reporters who happen to cover sports… Bruce Feldman has proven to be one of the latter. His deep dives on recruiting and the University of Miami broke new ground and gave deeper understand to fans of all stripes. His book examining the rising importance of the modern quarterback will do the same.”—Chuck Todd, NBC News“[A] detailed, technical breakdown of the modern QB with juicy inside stuff on Johnny Football, Trent Dilfer and the world of gurus.” —Sports Illustrated"[A] great Christmas gift for the football fans in your life…[and] another great read from [Feldman]." —Pat Forde, Yahoo! Sports"The QB, for me as a functioning footballaholic, is like crack....  It's an absolutely fascinating book. I can't recommend it enough." —Dan Wetzel, Yahoo! Sports“The book is very well written and...[a] fast-paced read." —Bookverdict.com

Fascinating Look at the New Culture Surrounding the Making of QBs By Scott Knight Being a former player and coach, not to mention a fan, I was fascinated by The QB: The Making of Modern Quarterbacks by Bruce Feldman. This is not a book about how to play quarterback, nor is it really being a quarterback. It is a revealing look at the process that is growing rapidly around training young men to be professional quarterbacks. While Feldman pulls back the curtain on QB development, he focuses on a couple of key individuals: Trent Dilfer, a Super Bowl-winning quarterback, current analyst, and the heart and soul of the Elite 11 QB competition/reality show; and Johnny Manziel, the polarizing Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback who was a first round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns. While focusing on these two men, Feldman brings in a wide variety of people, including current and former Elite 11 high school campers, several "QB gurus", and a litany of NFL and college coaches and talent evaluators. My favorite parts of this book are when Feldman discussed the variety of "QB gurus" and their differing approaches to refining and coaching quarterbacks. These include George Whitfield, Jr., Steve Clarkson (who does not come off well, in my opinion), Tom House (who made a name as a pitching coach), and Jordan Palmer, among others. Additionally, I really enjoyed the section about brain typing, an idea Jon Niednagel refined based on the Myers-Briggs personality scale. My one complaint with the book is that Feldman constantly repeated information when he spoke about his subjects. It made the book seem more like a collection of articles that was put together. This is a picky complaint, but when you binge read this book, you keep getting hit with the same stuff.Overall, I highly recommend The QB: The Making of Modern Quarterbacks by Bruce Feldman. If you have any interest in the quarterback position, you will be fascinated by Feldman's book. While he doesn't try to present any one way of training as "the way", he does present to the reader an inside look at the varied ways young men are being trained, and the men who are trying to unlock the secret to finding the next great QB.I received a review copy of this book from the Blogging for Books program in exchange for an honest review.

Initially I thought this was a book about some of the current NFL quarterbacks. However, while Feldman discusses many quarterbacks, the purpose of the book is to discover 'how a quarterback is created.'With that in mind, Feldman went on a discovery process to learn about the process. He met with former NFL quarterback and ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer and began a process of intense learning. He came away amazed at Dilfer's knowledge and ability to spot the good and not so good in quarterbacks. Ultimately this was a book which revealed the process young athletes go through to become an elite quarterback.Feldman learned about the Elite 11 Camp for the best of the best high school quarterbacks, the processes they go through, the personal coaches they utilize and how talent is defined. In the end, if you are into football, the behind the scenes aspect, I highly recommend The QB: The Making of Modern Quarterbacks. This is really a fascinating look at what happens behind the scenes for the elite quarterbacks, and the people who train them and their programs as well.I received a review copy of this book from the Blogging for Books program in exchange for an honest review.

Modern Quarterbacks By Sheep23 The QB: The Making of Modern Quarterbacks by Bruce FeldmanWhat is the major difference between those QB’s who make it in the League and those who fall by the wayside? Is it skill or leadership, poise or strength? Bruce Feldman, in his new book The QB seeks to answer what makes a quarterback not only thrive in the NFL but what makes him great. This book began as Feldman heard the curious meanderings about quarterbacks by former NFL QB Trent Dilfer. Trent is well-known for his deft way of understanding the ins and out of quarterbacking in a league filled with so-called experts (8).Starting with the Elite 11, a program designed to seek out the best high school quarterbacks, Feldman looks at how Dilfer and others have helped players with more than just the right technique for a perfect spiral (17). The problem with some private enterprises designed to help aspiring quarterbacks is the lack of real work that translates beyond high school, through college and into the Pros (23). Feldman gets into the work that Johnny Football went through at A&M by looking at his work with George Whitfield, a Southern California quarterback based coach. After spending some time with Johnny Whitfield, harping on him for his throwing motion and where he held the ball, Johnny went back to try to win the spot on A&M’s squad (50-51). More interesting, Paul Manziel, Johnny’s Dad was constantly forecasting what he thought his son was going to do, in tones much like prophecy.Analyzing the way Dilfer looks at Elite 11, Feldman brings out Dilfer’s DQ, Dude Qualities that is both amusing but very telling of the intangibles of quarterback play. These dude qualities are based upon things like competitiveness, moxie, grit, and resilience. Further, quarterbacks who set the climate for the locker room rather than reacting as a challenge comes up are what Dilfer looks for as the next best recruits. Interestingly enough, Dilfer seems to shy away from five-star recruits in hopes of landing some recruits who are more gritty or possess leadership qualities that others haven’t developed.I enjoyed this book but I really felt it was more of a survey of private quarterback gurus or coaches who want to make a name for themselves. Thanks to Blogging for Books for the copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Yum! By PattyLouise Little Beach Street BakeryByJenny ColganThe main and most important characters in this book...in my opinion...Polly...lover of banter and breads, Neil...the portly puffin, Huckle...bee keeper and former resident of Savannah, Georgia, Tarnie...fisherman, Mrs. Manse...meannie and former baker and Polly's landlady...now maker of tasteless toasties, Chris...Polly's sort of clueles ex boyfriend and Kerensa...Polly's best friend. There are other grand and great characters but these were my faves. My very brief story summary that includes bits and bobs from the beginning, middle and end of this book...Every once in a while a book is just simply perfect and totally magical. Polly leaves her life behind...or rather her life leaves her...she is without a home, a job, a fiancé! All she really loves to do is bake breads! Fully carb loaded amazing breads! She travels to a little island where you have to know when the tide is in or out to actually get to it and she finds a little loft on top of an abandoned bakery. She meets fishermen and a beekeeper and a millionaire, a wounded puffin...Neil...and a mean and nasty landlady! What is so much fun about this book is Polly and the banter between everyone. This book is fun, quirky and dare I say...it's adorable...but not in a sickening kind of way. If I was Goldilocks I would pronounce this book...just right! Plus I love portly Neil The Puffin! He loves brioche and tea kettles...lol!My actual most favorite part of this book...What I really truly loved about this book was the actual day to day life of living in this little beachy town. I also loved seeing Polly grow, blossom, and bloom! The descriptions of breads...and warm honey and jams and tea and good strong coffee and fish and chips and cheeses...OMG! Lovely! To die for! Amazing! My actual real and true feelings about this book and whether or not other potential readers will enjoy it...Books appeal to different readers for a multitude of reasons. For reasons unknown this book simply sang to me. I loved everything about it. Readers who enjoy quirky clever sweet books...should truly love this one.My thank you to Edelweiss for allowing me to read this book on my Kindle Paperwhite!

A popular book blog recommended this one and I was a little surprised from the beginning. It reads like some of the novellas I get for my kindle around Christmas time- not at all serious, Hallmark movie-esque, easy reading. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I guess I was expecting it to be a little smarter, if that makes any sense. I really enjoy Sophie Kinsella and she has a positive quote on the cover of this book. The cover also has a cupcake on it, and the bakery in the book is a bread bakery- no cupcakes! That's no big deal, of course; the big deal for me is just how choppy the writing is. I have noticed one example of this in romantic comedy books lately- the story will be told in third person but mostly from the girl's point of view, but then all the sudden, you're getting the guy's point of view for like half a page. It's awkward and it's inconsistent. There were also a lot of awkward transitions in the book. A character will be feeling strongly one way and then shift to an opposite feeling with no explanation- off the top of my head, this happened with Huckle (Haha! Worst name ever! Do British people really think Americans have names like that?! which also reminds me that the dialogue written for the American was jarringly bad), Kerensa, and Mrs. Manse. Another awkward aspect is the shift in setting without proper explanation- i.e. you thought they were on the beach but now they're back at the hotel. But I guess all of that would've been okay if I felt like I really knew or understood the characters. They were either poorly drawn or caricatures. There were also a lot of over the top cliche situations- massive storms, humungously unrealistic parties, dramatic beach and rain scenes, etc. I like "beachy reads" but this one just didn't work for me.

Light-Hearted Read for Foodie Fiction Fans By Miss Bonnie When Polly’s long-term relationship comes crashing down and with it the business they’ve built together, she’s left to start over completely from scratch. With so few options available to her, she agrees to rent a run-down flat with a leaky roof on the island of Polbearne. She finds solace in utilizing her baking skills and filling the air of the island with the enticing smell of freshly baked bread.Polbearne, a quaint seaside village off the coast of England, is based off the actual island St. Michael’s Mount in Cornwall. Colgan’s descriptions of the village were thorough, detailing not only the people and their way of life but of the town itself and the sole causeway being the only way to come and go on the island. While the people in the village weren’t always the most friendly (since they saw Polly as an outsider), the village itself sounded like a such a lovely place to reside with its small shops on cobbled streets and a ruined yet still charming castle on the top of a hill overlooking the island.Polly’s ever-constant baking was also given much detail and constantly left you craving delicious breads. After one particularly tasty sounding chapter I became determined to also become a master bread maker. Long story short, I failed miserably. Bread is FAR harder to bake than Polly makes it sound like just so you know! I didn’t actually attempt any of the recipes included in the story (Cheese Straws, Sweetcorn Fritters, Cinnamon Rolls, Focaccia, and my favorite: Shortbread) but I’m determined to try again. Someday. This fun little foodie novel is not without its fill of drama though. Polly immediately begins butting heads with her landlord who is the sole baker on the island and Polly’s freshly baked bread is hampering her sales. Her landlord has her own personal history that ends up being told as a side-story. Polly also gets involved in some romantic complications that ends up being something akin to a love square. While I’m not a fan of love triangles and especially squares in general, what really disappointed me with this one in particular was the lack of chemistry between Polly and any of the men. What I loved most about Polly was her empowering story of hitting rock bottom and finding the strength to not only make a living but to find out who she is while being on her own again. The romance element wasn’t completely necessary in my opinion and especially not that many romances. It made it all avoidably messy and I would have appreciated a much more simplistic story in that regard.I don’t know how I’ve failed to mention the best part of the story this far into my review! When Polly moves to Polbearne she unintentionally takes on a new pet which she names Neil. Neil, the puffin. Neil was by far the cutest addition to the story even though he was unrealistically tame, but whatever! Now I want a pet puffin.Little Beach Street Bakery is a sweet, entertaining tale about learning to navigate the harsh realities of life and finding what you’re passionate about. It’s the perfect read for foodie fiction fans and readers simply looking for a light-hearted read.

This book was written by Coach Charlie Francis in 2008 to highlight the key concepts of sprint techniques and the dynamics which take place during a race. In Race Dynamics and Sprint Techniques, Coach Francis analyzes how a world class sprinter’s technique shifts throughout a race and the how the mechanics of the sprinter deliver this technique for maximum speed to be attained. He also devotes a significant amount of the book to explaining his ideas around how training for power trumps training for technique as better technique results from power. This book written by Coach Charlie Francis is highly specialized towards track athletes but applies to all power and speed performance sports. His ideas of training for power, and having technique as an outgrowth of that power, was innovated during the time he was a coach but has gained momentum in sport as of 2015 this thinking has become the standard. As with the other books in this series it will change the way you currently think about your training regimen or reinforce what you know to be true from your own experience. Additionally, his thoughts and illustrations on technique throughout the race with give you a fresh perspective to tune your training program appropriately. This book brings to life, in the race setting, all of the training ideas which were highlighted in the other books in this series. To learn the specifics of the other books in the Charlie Francis “Key Concepts” series, please read “The Structure of Training for Speed”, “Training for Power and Strength in Speed”, “Super Compensation and Recovery” and “High Intensity Training – Expanding the Limits of Performance”. Further information can also be found in the books Charlie Francis Training System and *Speed Trap (*Francis tells the story in Speed Trap how he became a coach and what he did to build one of the most dominate sprint groups in the world). Many of the Key Concepts are highlighted in the video training series called “GPP Essentials” and “Inside the SPP” which are available at www.charliefrancis.com. Race Dynamics and Sprint Techniques is a must read for sprinters, coaches of sprinters and anyone working with athletes in speed and power events.

During the time he served on the bench in Indian Territory, Judge Isaac Parker's court was famous throughout the world. Known as "the hanging judge," Parker was not the stereotype of the rough, fire-breathing frontier judge. He was articulate and impassioned about the rule of law. But he served at a time that epitomized the lawless Old West. With non-tribal whites pouring into the territory, a vicious crime wave swept the region. For two decades, Judge Parker's mission was to establish law and order. He did that in part by hanging eighty-eight men who appeared before his bench. For over one hundred years, this book has stood as the best chronicle of the Parker Court. It is vast in scope and thrilling in execution, there is something here for everyone from the True Crime reader to a law professor. See how justice was dished out in the Old West as seen through the eyes of the court. Every memoir of the American West provides us with another view of the migration that changed the country forever. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. THE WILD, WILD WEST By M. G. Swift Though published in 1899, this book is still important and interesting. I'm so glad that I found it on Amazon, it's hard to come by. The book relates the true life of the early days of Arkansas and Oklahoma, crossing into Missouri and Kansas where the bad guys would hide out after their robberies, murders, etc. Judge Isaac Parker was the law at the time, but I have a personal interest in one of the lawmen of the time, Chief United States Marshall Jacob Yoes, who was my great-grandfather. His name is mentioned often along with the many deputies of the time. He was called Colonel Yoes, but the Colonel was an honorary title. He served in the Civil War on the Union side, was injured and survived, was captured three times and exchanged for Confederate prisoners each time. I heard interesting stories from my grandmother, who was widowed at a young age and lived with us from the time I was born. The city of Fort Smith, Arkansas is in the process of forming a Marshals Museum, which is scheduled for dedication in 2016. Check it out on the internet. My great-grandfather died in 1905 and is buried in Fort Smith. It is important that we not forget our history, our heritage. With the violence in our country today, maybe we need the U.S. Marshals to saddle up again!

Parker is a unique person, trying to clean up the west. No Rooster Cogburn in here, but a lot of other people who are just as interesting. Good read and great for a history buff.

A story of humour, sadness and overwhelming compassion, as well as love, this book will enlighten the hearts of its readers everywhere.

Diane's well written book captures the gripping emotions of growing up in a crazy family encompassing violence, hate and her feeling of powerlessness at being the effect of a psychopathic father. Her experiences in the Spirit World lifts her to the path of love, compassion and acceptance.

Carmel Greenwood (Author of Letting Go & Loving Life, Soul Energy, Wake up Mum ~ Drugs are stealing our children)

White Feathers on a Bed of Nails is a moving, personal account of a spiritual journey that transcends and shapes the life of a little girl living in circumstances that are harsh, often brutal and very much at odds with her innately sensitive interaction with the world she is growing up in. Over the years she comes to know White Feather, her spiritual guide and her world becomes transformed in ways which we can only hope to experience ourselves.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Spiritually uplifting. By Craig L. Kelley Loved the story, elegant writing style, poetic, wonderful description of some spiritual channelings, divine interventions and guidance from the Spiritual realms. A fantastic read. :)

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Extraordinary read! By Ram Das Batchelder This richly-written and haunting spiritual autobiography is truly an awe-inspiring treasure. As Ms. Trevena begins leading her readers on a beautifully-detailed tour of her horrific, poverty-bound childhood, I couldn’t help but be impressed by the miracle that her artistic sensitivity and rare spiritual abilities had survived such a hell realm. She shares with us pages from her childhood diaries filled with beautifully written depictions of her nightmares, and yet studded with high philosophy and her irrepressible love for everyone, including her father, a violent brute of a man whom she tried desperately to love instead of hate, despite his glaring character flaws. I appreciated her honest sharing of early sexual experiences, and her heartbreak at watching her own emotional disturbance destroy her first relationships. It was fascinating to learn of her experiences in a local Spiritualist Church, and at one point she has some unusual encounters with ghosts, one of whom saves her from a catastrophic bout of sleep paralysis. When her marriage enters a period of crisis, one night she has her first of many encounters with a spirit guide, a North American Indian named White Feather, who appears in a visible form in her room and channels his wise and caring voice through her writing. Clearly there is more to Ms. Trevena’s story, and I hope to see a sequel coming soon. This is a wonderful book!~Ram Das Batchelder, author of “Rising in Love”

From the beginning I was drawn in by Diane's writing style, story and incredible gift of writing. This is a beautifully inspirational story of life circumstances, a deeply difficult childhood, strength, perseverance and forgiveness. The story touched me deeply and through it all Diane has emerged the ever beautiful butterfly, spreading joy, beauty and inspiration. Part of what I love about it most, is that it in no way resembles and written tale, it is pure experience and spiritual wisdom that shines from the story so well written and shared.
