By Steven When my friend, Clark Semmes, asked me to read his book about his CMT I said I'd be happy to, but what I really meant was I'd be happy to fulfill my friendly obligation to read it, -ish. So I did. To my surprised pleasure, the book is a page turner, an absolutely entertaining batch of stories about universal human struggles. One story after the other explores each unique person, men and women, tots and seniors, varied as can be, too often slowly diagnosed with CMT, a degenerative something that few doctors seem to know about, struggling through it while they excel through their personal lives and accomplish their own new versions of normalcy and triumph, that is limited by CMT, but is not. The clarity of the disease that is largely unknown even by the medicals is significant, and the amusing and sad and significant tales were stories that I was happy to discover. Details about the early science of CMT and the scientists who were and are defining it were consistently engaging. It's a fun book to read if you care about anything, and will helpfully broaden awareness and science and diagnoses.

Compelling personal stories of people living full lives while dealing with CMT challenges By Jeannine Mjoseth Clark Semmes' book, The Tribe of Thin Ankles, is a must-read! You get compelling personal stories of people who are living full lives while dealing with the tremendous challenges of Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndrome, along with the history of this gnarly genetic disease. He touches on the efforts by researchers who are identifying possible genetic culprits and treatments as well as the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association's efforts to raise both research funds and awareness. The author comes at the topic as someone who is experiencing his own CMT challenges, which makes the book both deeply personal and moving. This isn't the author's first effort as a writer. He and his editor, Marcia Semmes, are well-known for their funny, quirky travel stories for the New York Times and Washington Post.

This book is not only informative, but very inspiring. Clark's humor keeps the book upbeat even when discussing the specifics of CMT and the science behind it. As a fellow CMT-er, I greatly appreciate Clark's book in making CMT known to a world-wide audience as something more than just Country Music Television. Thank you Clark for doing a great justice to all of us living with CMT!

Memoir from Marc de Celle of his family's first five years in Fargo. Having always lived in either Arizona, California or Florida, Fargo was a big change -- but the biggest shock wasn't the climate, it was the culture.  The locals frequently left de Celle speechless, until he finally figured out what to say: "Oh.  How Fargo of You."

From the Introduction:

I had no burning desire to visit Fargo.  But my wife, Charlene, had decided we were going.  Her best friend Melody, who I liked very much and our kids adored, now lived in Fargo.  So we came.  It was the summer of 2001 and we were on vacation.

Our lives would never be the same.

Until then, all I knew of Fargo, other than the fact that my wife’s best friend had moved here, was that a movie with dumb criminals and people talking in goofy accents had been titled after it.  Oh, and it got really, really cold....

That was all I knew of Fargo.

So our first visit, nearly a quarter of a century later, held many pleasant surprises.  No dumb criminals – in fact, about the lowest crime rate in the country.  No goofy accents, don’cha know.  Great weather (we came in June).  And a much bigger surprise, as you’ll read in Chapter One...

Review "Five minutes into de Celle's astounding journey into Fargoism, I was having trouble believing the place he was describing really existed. By the last page, I was glad it did, and grateful a writer of his caliber gave me the tour." ― David Madrid, a journalist for The Arizona Republic and creator of fabulousfables.com "How Fargo of You made me laugh out loud with tears in my eyes! Marc de Celle gives the world an inside view seldom seen by outsiders..." ― Kerstin Kealy, Anchor, WDAY TV, Fargo "A funny, yet profound book with a remarkable surprise: It shows how America might succeed in the 21st century." ― Joel Barker, International consultant and bestselling author of Paradigms: The Business of Discovering the Future, The Star Thrower Story, Future Edge and others "A gifted writer reminds us of the remarkable people and stories that make America great." ― Senator Byron Dorgan "It often takes somebody from the outside looking in to show us how nice we have it. That's what Marc de Celle has done with How Fargo of You. The book captures why we Upper Midwesterners put up with the weather and the remoteness. But I don't think even we understood it completely until an outsider-turned-insider like Marc pointed it out to us." ― Ryan Bakken, Grand Forks Herald "This is the perfect book to share with anyone who has ever asked, 'Why do you live in Fargo?'" ― Madalyn Pezella, Village Family Magazine "You hear a lot about 'Midwestern values.' How Fargo of You explains what that means with heartwarming real examples. We often associate business and personal success with ruthlessness, but How Fargo of You shows that living by the 'Golden Rule' - treating others as you would like to be treated - creates prosperity. The Midwest is a great place to live and do business, in part because so many people show kindness in their interactions with others, whether during a chance meeting or an important business deal." ― Richard Solberg, CEO, Bell State Bank and Trust "Living in cities like Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City before spending five surprising years in Fargo, I can tell you there's substance behind Marc de Celle's funny phrase "How Fargo of You." He captures the magic of the place with heartwarming style. How Fargo of him!" ― Christopher Gabriel, Power Talk 96, KALZ, Fresno "Fargo isn't about fracking anything... People in other parts of the country think Fargo's streets are awash with oil, but the oil patch is on the other side of the state, hundreds of miles away, largely controlled by out-of-state interests... No, Fargo's prosperity isn't about fracking... Marc de Celle got it right when he coined the phrase, "How Fargo of You." He sets the record straight with his captivating, funny, real-life stories." ― Ralph Kingsbury, Kingsbury Applied Economics, Columnist for the Grand Forks Herald from 2004-2012 "How Fargo of You is heartwarming and hilarious. I found extreme delight in Marc de Celle's newcomer observations of what most of us take for granted in this part of the country. It's a great read." ― Dennis Walaker, Mayor of Fargo 2006-2014

I chuckled with the author's surprise at the thought process of my home town and surrounding areas. I always wondered what was with people when I left the area. But now I know, it is me-- we are a different breed up there, so nice, it's expected. If my car broke down up there, it would just be a second before someone pulled over to help. And yes, you don't have to pay at the pump or in advance. Why would you? Fargoans know you'll come in and pay. The author tells his many adventures with the niceness of the culture there. Whether it is Minnesota nice, or How Fargo of You...it is true. People are just different up there and when we move to new areas of the country.....it's a shock for us as well. With humor and wide eyed amazement, the author captures my hometown in a way that someone from there never could. An adorable read for anyone. Especially those who have met someone from that area and wondered-- what is up with those people? Now, despite the persistent niceness, and sometimes quaint naive nature of a Fargoan to the outside world-- it can be a bit insular. So I was pleased the author fit right in. Sometimes, a Fargoan will be awfully nice to you-- but that doesn't mean they accept you and can be a bit guarded. Overt anger is not much of an issue - but there is a mastery of passive-aggressiveness. I'd live to see a sequel that explores more of the areas social quirks.

More than a memoir, Lumpen: The Autobiography of Ed Mead takes the reader on a tour of Americas underbelly. From Iowa to Compton to Venice Beach to Fairbanks, Alaska, Mead introduces you to poor America just trying to get byand barely making it. When a thirteen-year-old Mead ends up in the Utah State Industrial School, a prison for boys, it is the first step in a story of oppression and revolt that will ultimately lead to the foundation of the George Jackson Brigade, a Seattle-based urban guerrilla group, and to Meads re-incarceration as a fully engaged revolutionary, well-placed and prepared to take on both

We were both teacher assistants in the computer lab in the community college that taught classes in the prison. I have read a LOT of prisoners' writings over the years -- 90% of it pathetically painful to read. I expected Ed's writing to be better than average... but was delighted to find that the book is REMARKABLY well written. He tells just enough of the story to keep things moving along, but not so much that the reader is bogged down in trivial details. The writing is superbly paced. The mark of a good writer is the ability to sustain reader interest page after page, and Ed manages to do just that.

The basic premise is that the main character sees a girl in a disco as a teenager and is spoiled for love...he spends the next 20 years destroying his life looking for her. The book is very funny and a very easy, quick read (without being shallow or too light). I loved that it was a rom com written by a man, about men too. Made a nice change. I also enjoyed the comedy industry storyline.

A story that is chilling and painful to read -- but has a happy ending! At 14, Trent wrote the story of his life (with some input from his adoptive Mom) and turned it into a published book. It took a LOT of courage to reach into the dark places and wrestle this forth into the open. It's a 'prima facie' example of some of the potential within children who have been neglected and abused by their birth families, then abandoned and abused in a different way by the Foster Care system. He was fortunate enough to be adopted -- along with his younger brother -- into a family where they both have bloomed and thrived. All four lives have been incredibly enriched and expanded. This book should be read by people who care about children... Especially parents who have launched successful kids into the world, and find themselves 'empty-nesters' with extra space in their homes and hearts. And the energy to share life with an older child or teen through foster care or foster care adoption. Lives will be changed. Great job, Trent.

How openly Trent shares his story and the abuses he has triumphed over would inspire anyone and has certainly inspired myself and my kids. My kids, who are adopted from foster care and have similar backgrounds, have benefited immensely from hearing his story and have gained strength to begin sharing their open stories more openly. As a mom, Trent's story gives me insight into the hearts and minds of my kids that they are just not always able to give me themselves. Trent and his bravery are such a blessing to the world. I am privileged to have had the pleasure of hearing him share from his heart.

As a woman who also experienced some abuse as a child, I related in many ways with Trent's emotional journey; and in the areas in which I could not relate, I was brought in to a new understanding of what children in foster care go through, and the triumph of finding a forever family. The reason I am giving four stars is from a literary standpoint alone. The editing could have been better, but the story should be read by everyone. I read it in a day and then left it with my mom to read as well. Thank you for sharing your story!

The authors writing was extremely descriptive and I felt like I was there sitting at the smokey bar next to Mare watching everything happen.. But alas.. The book ended.. I hope this author continues this story into a novel, I like her writing style.

By Roger This is my fourth year in a row getting this book and it continues to grow bigger and bigger. Not sure about the Dee Gordon thing as my copy had him included. good analysis, with emphasis on advanced stats in projecting statistics for 2016. Tommy John feature unique in showing which pitchers to avoid on that front. Good stuff.

Good, quick, informative read from Elder Ulysses By Rev Victor J Belton Ulysses is an elder at Peace Lutheran Church in Decatur, GA where I have the privilege of serving as pastor. This is a very fetching bio that will explain much about how life remains even now in rural Georgia. Ulysses escaped with his life but many will not be so blessed even in this new millennium. Thanks Ulysses for sharing your self with the world.

“Amanda Montei deftly evokes the splendors and miseries of her childhood in LA, a fabulous country of the mind, a land unlike any other. The riches to rags narrative she offers breaks your heart at a hundred intersections; it is a story populated by the demonic energies of family and school life, polished and broken into shards of crystal... With relentless subconscious force Montei’s genealogy slams against her personal life story, creating a stunning reverb effect.”

—Dodie Bellamy, author of The TV Sutras and The Letters of Mina Harker

“In this deft, funny, sad, and strong memoir, Amanda Montei shows a remarkable skill for zooming in on the hilarious, unbearable, sometimes heartbreaking detail (watch for the polyps!), then panning out to give a memorable portrait of a time and place (Los Angeles in the 80s and 90s, with all its deceptive, and sometimes real, glamour). It’s as much discovery narrative as recovery narrative, as its author explores the deep mysteries of both mothers and memory with a wry and steady hand.”

—Maggie Nelson, author of Bluets, The Argonauts and The Red Parts

“A daughter gives birth to her mother’s voice and finds her own in this remarkable bifurcated narrative. Set against a backdrop of fading Hollywood glory, Two Memoirs portrays two lives, two eras, two equally compelling stories, deeply interwoven and powerfully rendered in Amanda Montei’s clear-eyed, strong-hearted and revealing prose.”

—Janet Sarbanes, author of Army of One

Two Memoirs is a biography of a mother, an autobiography of a daughter, a story about being a girl in Los Angeles—but also a conversation, an argument, an elegy, a letter, a manuscript at an impasse, and a search for an archive of memory that can never be found.

Read the often hair raising memories that made up the career of a man who served for fifty-seven years in various aspects of law enforcement. Jensen was an aide to the police commissioner of Detroit where he met both mobsters and three Presidents including President John F. Kennedy. As a rural chief of police, he investigated several murders, broke up a chop shop, arrested arsonists while simultaneously dealing with the usual drunk and disorderlies and juvenile misdemeanors that all towns contend with, big or small. He was a union leader and held a strong tie to the Democrat party where he met several senators and representatives. Despite this amazing background, Jack remained and is today a humble servant of the law and his community. Jack Jensen is an incredible man with a story you will not want to miss.

57 Years, by Jack Jensen

About the Author Jack was an illegitimate child born in a time of no tolerance. He lived with an abusive grandmother and did not receive the usual nurturing upbringing we associate with success in a career. He had a wanderlust that was satisfied by hitchhiking and later by a tour of duty with the U.S. Army. In high school and college, he competed with Olympian swimmers and sang with the Detroit choir. He met the man who would be his mentor early on when he fled the abuses of his grandmother. This gentleman was a copper, as Jack likes to say, who intervened in Jack's life whenever his grandmother became too overwhelming for Jack. He would allow Jack to stay at the police station overnight and feed him and see that he got to school. He basically was the Child Protective Service for that era. Later, Jack modeled this man in his care and discipline of the street kids he encountered. Jack loved his mother, forgiving her for the absence of a father, for her alcoholism, and eventually followed her footsteps into unionism and party support of the Democrats. Because of her influence, he was asked to be the aide to Commissioner George Edwards where he met many important union and political leaders of the day. In 1967, Jensen was involved in the riots of Detroit that lasted almost a week having repercussions still seen today. He attended the 1972 Democratic convention and was later asked to work for Jimmy Hoffa, Jr. on his security detail. He shook hands with Jesse Jackson, Walter Reuther, Presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Jimmy Carter. He met Humphrey, McGovern, Bye, Martin Luther King. He drank with Coleman Young and Cavanaugh and a member of the Purple Gang who lived down the street. All the while, his immediate family, with the exception of his mother, wanted nothing to do with him or his Catholic wife and family. The feelings of his childhood have grown with him into his eighty-fifth year and still color his being and to know this man who has done so much good from so much bad is enviable and honorable. Jack still lives at 85 with plans for another book and a wide influence over his community.

On a hot summer day in 2009, Dave Sandler's life took its biggest detour. He dropped dead on a softball field, but God was not ready to take him. Taking a Detour, describes the many health obstacles and professional challenges he overcame when a cure for cancer caused unforeseen-and catastrophic-health problems decades later. Each chapter is punctuated with important life lessons that will inspire and motivate readers to persevere through their most difficult challenges. "Dave really hits home with his journey of the ups and downs with his battle to get his life back to normal. It is a moving testimonial of just how much fight we all have within ourselves to overcome adversity." - Johnny Holliday, broadcaster for University of Maryland Terrapins and Mid-Atlantic Sports Network

By Staci Ann Blank David Sandler was my very first best friend when we attended Wellwood Elementary school in Baltimore Maryland.... I left Baltimore at 13 and not until we were in our 40's did we re-connect via Facebook. Through the Baltimore grapevine I had heard that Dave was diagnosed with and beat cancer at 20, I had heard that he was happily married and had a family...I knew he was "Detour Dave"... I assumed by glancing every now and then at his Facebook that he was living the dream ...and I was happy for him because he always held a special place in my heart. What I didn't know, which turns out is pretty much anything and everything of substance regarding David's life... I learned this past week when I read his book.First of all. Pages 175-175 define David Sandler. The rest of the book is icing. His character, class and commitment are the foundation for which I believe without, he wouldn't be thriving today, both professionally, personally, socially, spiritually etc.If you read this book, and I highly recommend you do, you will learn a lot of Medical things that you never knew , all of which are beneficial for one to know and some that will just blow your mind. I had no idea that being treated by radiation back in the day could/would be the root of so many catastrophic health issues in the future... Medical issues aside the take away from this book for me, are the personal challenges Dave and his family had to embrace as a result of his health detours. The willingness to place your ego aside, be truthful with yourself and those closest to you, embrace your current reality and make the necessary changes to live in that space. Accept and truly believe that there is no shame in your game and that everyone needs a helping hand now and then. Being grateful that you have a loving partner , children, friends and relatives who have your back. Being humble , patient ,forgiving , positive andthankful even when deep down you struggle in the moments you feel like throwing in the towel. We may not all share the medical crisis's that Dave did, but every one of us has faced a variety of personal setbacks. There is not a person on the planet who wouldn't read this book and be inspired by Dave to step up their game.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I highly recommend everyone read this book By L. Bogash This book is about perseverance no matter what. My husband works with Dave and although I knew a lot about what happened that day on the softball field and the aftermath, there was so much Dave shared about his personal struggles that I had no idea about. The book is well written, witty and inspiring. Dave's enthusiastic personality and caring ways comes shining through every page. If you are struggling in any aspect of your life, this book will inspire you that if you keep going you can pull through. This book made me smile and also brought me to tears. The pages at the end where his wife and children wrote about their experience was compelling. I highly recommend everyone read this book!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Detour Dave's view from above. By Larry Wachs Detour Dave has cheated death twice. The final score will be Dave 2, Death 1. Dave wins life. And between those battles, a pretty impressive life as the local broadcast hero he always wanted to be. Very dignified, thoughtful, and mostly instructive, "Taking A Detour" gives us the insights to live better lives. Especially fun to read if you grew up in Baltimore.

Excerpt from The Crime of Sylvestre BonnardThat excellent French critic, Jules Lemaitre, observes: "Let us love the books which please us and cease to trouble ourselves about classifications and schools of literature." This generous exhortation seems especially appropriate in the case of Anatole France. The author of "Le Crime de Sylvestre Bonnard" is not classifiable, - though it would be difficult to name any other modern French writer by whom the finer emotions have been touched with equal delicacy and sympathetic exquisiteness. If by Realism we mean Truth, which alone gives value to any study of human nature, we have in Anatole France a very dainty realist: - if by Romanticism we understand that unconscious tendency of the artist to elevate truth itself beyond the range of the familiar, and into the emotional realm of aspiration, then Anatole France is at times a romantic. And, nevertheless, as a literary figure he stands alone; neither by his distinctly Parisian refinement of method, nor yet by any definite characteristic of style, can he be successfully attached to any special group of writers.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He was a poet, journalist and novelist, the son of a bookstore owner who became a member of the Académie Française and was ultimately awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Although he must have appeared to his contemporaries to be a revolutionary writer, a scourge of the Church and a witty satirist, The Crime of Sylvestre Bonnard is a somewhat plodding read today. True, I have only read a translation of the work of this so-called master-stylist, a first person narrative of the eponymous hero that frequently dragged. The main trouble for me is that Bonnard, a fusty old scholar with an enquiring mind and wide sympathies, doesn't actually do anything until the end of the story when he adopts a young girl, Jeanne, rescuing her from an oppressive scholastic regime. Not that our hero (or anti-hero) is unsympathetic. He is earnest and meticulous in his pursuit of ancient texts, having devoted his life to recovering works that nobody but he is ever likely to read. He sees life, as Johnson said of Milton, `through the spectacles of books.' To Bonnard's credit, he is only too aware of being buried in the past: "Bonnard," I said to myself, "Thou knowest how to decipher old texts; but thou dost not know how to read the Book of Life." The archaic language is maintained throughout, serving to underline the narrator's distance from what we might call `the real world.'The out-of-touch bibliophile is constantly being orientated to practical issues by his dominatrix of a housekeeper, Therese. `On re-entering my lodgings I had to endure the sharpest remonstrances from Therese, who said she had given up trying to understand my new way of living.' His new way of living (his Crime in fact) entails living with `the child', Jeanne, who becomes his ward and indeed spiritual inamorata, although he ultimately but reluctantly cedes her to Gelis, a younger man - shades of Esther Summerson, perhaps? But even the old man's happy relationship with the rescued Jeanne is seen by the scholar a re-enactment of the Antigone situation. Thus when Bonnard reads the Chorus of Antigone to Jeanne, the tragic heroine's face appears before him `in all its passionless purity.' He tells his ward `I am reading, Mademoiselle - I am reading that Antigone, having buried the blind old man, wove a fair tapestry embroidered with images in the likeness of laughing faces.' The realistic Gelis who overhears this protests that this ending is not in the text. No, Bonnard agrees, `It is a scholium' - a marginal note, but adds Gelis `Unpublished.' Thus does the wish-fulfilment of life in the end triumph over the reality of textual scholarship.

Has its moments By wiredweird After reading France's Thais and especially his Penguin Island, I had highest hopes for more of his gentle satire and piercing wit. Although a few examples of them appeared, generally in the narrator's self-deprecating moments, Bonnard never really engaged me. Too many premises about society and social niceties have changed, and not much actually happens - it added up to very little for me to hold onto, and no easy connection to that little.I'll come back to other works by France, but might not be so persistent in reading each one to the end.-- wiredweird

A Different Face of War is a riveting account of one American officer in the Medical Service Corps during the early years of the Vietnam War. Assigned as the senior medical advisor to the Army of the Republic of Vietnam in I Corps, an area close to the DMZ, James G. Van Straten traveled extensively and interacted with military officers and non-commissioned officers, peasant-class farmers, Buddhist bonzes, shopkeepers, scribes, physicians, nurses, the mentally ill, and even political operatives. He sent his wife daily letters from July 1966 through June 1967, describing in impressive detail his experiences, and those letters became the primary source for his memoir. The author describes with great clarity and poignancy the anguish among the survivors when an American cargo plane in bad weather lands short of the Da Nang Air Base runway on Christmas Eve and crashes into a Vietnamese coastal village, killing more than 100 people and destroying their village; the heart-wrenching pleadings of a teenage girl that her shrapnel-ravaged leg not be amputated; and the anger of an American helicopter pilot who made repeated trips into a hot landing zone to evacuate the wounded, only to have the Vietnamese insist that the dead be given a higher priority.

A Different Face of War: Memories of a Medical Service Corps Officer in Vietnam (North Texas Military Biography and Memoir Series), by James G Van Straten

Review "Daily letters home are the basis of this important memoir. The author’s insight into all that was swirling around him was outstanding. He was on the move all the time, in the air and on the ground, in hostile territory and in the relative sanctuary of the cities. He witnessed what is recorded. If you have any interest in the history of the Vietnam War, the age-old culture, values, and religions of the Vietnamese people, the terrible effects of the war on the civilian population and the challenges of providing medical advisory support—this book is for you. I had one problem with it. I could not lay it down."—LTG Quinn H. Becker, U.S. Army Retired, Former U.S. Army Surgeon General   "This is a fine memoir that will add significantly to the historiography of the Vietnam War. Van Straten witnessed more death and destruction than most combat soldiers, and his memories of those moments are riveting. No one can tell the story of the devastating effect of war on civilians better than a medical department officer."—Ron Milam, Texas Tech University, and author of Not a Gentleman's War: An Inside View of Junior Officers in the Vietnam War   “In this sensitive and compassionate account of his year as an advisor, Colonel Van Straten provides valuable insights into the lives and culture of ordinary South Vietnamese struggling to survive a hellish war. An important addition to the literature of the conflict. Highly recommended.”—Lewis Sorley, author of A Better War: The Unexamined Victories and Final Tragedy of America’s Last Years in Vietnam   "The outcome of the Vietnam War might have been different if President Johnson had had the insights and information of then-Major Jim Van Straten, so thoughtfully shared in A Different Face of War. His stories of little Ho Thien, the gifted Dr. John Henry Giles and the German hospital ship, the Helgoland, presage what we know today as ‘medical diplomacy.’ He is inspired—and inspiring—as he describes ‘winning the hearts and minds of the Vietnamese people’ through the best of medicine and education."—John P. Howe III, M.D., Former president and CEO of Project HOPE   "Van Straten was a very attentive observer and has thoughtful and detailed observations of numerous aspects of Vietnamese culture. The book is full of great snapshots of Vietnamese life during the war, and of many aspects Western accounts rarely discuss.”—James E. Westheider, University of Cincinnati-Clermont, and author of Fighting in Vietnam: The Experiences of the U.S. Soldier   “In stark, yet humane language, Jim Van Straten has rendered a great service for those who still seek  to understand America’s failure to win the ‘hearts and minds’ of the Vietnamese people. In graphic detail he describes tragedies witnessed by few Americans, and provides clues for today’s leaders of America’s wars on behalf of, and against, indigenous peoples. He was true to the principle that a soldier is charged with protection of the weak and unarmed.”—Thomas M. Hatfield, Director, Military History Institute, Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, University of Texas at Austin"Beyond describing his everyday activities, Van Straten tells stories about revelatory encounters with a long list of people, from the famous to the unknown. He explores nuances of Vietnamese culture overlooked in many other Vietnam War memoirs. He provides memorable word pictures of scenes such as the difference between American and Vietnamese casualty wards. He editorializes against the tactic of search-and-destroy."--The VVA Veteran"[Van Straten] has written about the Vietnamese people and soldiers in a way that is honest, yet compassionate and personal. As a result, he enables us to see the war through the eyes of an American Advisor, immersed in a difficult, dangerous and often baffling environment. . . . A Different Face of War offers a valuable look into the developing confidence, tempered with a growing sense of frustration that characterized the journey of most Advisors, regardless of their assignment, rank, or duties."--Counterparts"A Different Face of War presents a soldier and practitioner of medical diplomacy discharging his duty to conserve fighting strength while fully meeting the requirement to protect the weak and the unarmed. One hopes Van Straten's legacy will inspire serving and future MSC officers."--On Point, the Journal of Army History"[A] captivating account of Americans serving in Vietnam during the early days of a tumultuous time in our nation's history. While written as a memoir, it also serves as a heartfelt tribute to military service members and the South Vietnamese who battled communism a half century ago in the hopes of a better tomorrow."--San Antonio Express-News

Van Straten, is my brother---the first-born of seven children in a loving Wisconsin family. It is not surprising to me that through his hard work and force of character, he found countless and ingenious ways to not only help American and Vietnamese military doctors, nurses and Navy corpsmen heal the battle wounds of soldiers but also found ways to facilitate the giving of compassionate care to the helpless civilian population suffering the ravages of war. His memories will warm your heart. Donna Van Straten Remmert

By Don Helin In his memoir, A Different Face of War, Colonel Jim Van Straten chronicles a harrowing account of his experiences as a senior advisor in the northern five provinces of Vietnam known as Military Region (MR) I, Van Straten's day-to-day account provides a slice of history, documenting the successes and failures, joys and pain of the critical war years from 1966 to 1967. For many, the memories of these events will be a scar on their heart for the rest of their lives. An account not to be missed. -- Don Helin: award winning author of Secret Assault and Devil's Den.

The advisory effort in support of the RVN and civilian population was one of our best programs, run with very limited resources By Amazon Customer This book by Colonel Van Straten is an outstanding account of the Vietnam War many in our country never heard or knew about. I was also an MSC Advisor in a different part of Vietnam during some of the same time as he and was facing many of the same situations. His clear and accurate description of everyday occurrences, interactions with Vietnamese and American military and civilians, and his insights into the conflict gave me the feeling I was reliving much of my own year's worth of experiences over again. The advisory effort in support of the RVN and civilian population was one of our best programs, run with very limited resources, during the conflict. His accounts provide a great opportunity to learn about the Vietnamese culture and the horrific price paid by a civilian population in a war zone. Easily readable and hard to put down. Daphne and Thekla by Jonna-Lynn Mandelbaum Daphne and Thekla is an imaginative, well-researched, and beautifully written work of historical fiction based on the legendary Thekla, a Christian figure of the first century. Based on The Acts of Paul and Thekla, a scripture not accepted into the Bible, this book is a powerful portrait of friendship, of faith, and of women transcending the boundaries of their time and culture. In first-century Roman society, an arena that is particularly oppressive for women, Thekla has even more challenges than most. Her own mother wants her dead for fleeing an arranged marriage, and later a civic leader tries to have her killed―torn apart by wild animals―because she thwarted his attempt at rape. Rather than destroying her, these horrendous experiences strengthen Thekla to develop her own spiritual insights. She becomes a follower of the Apostle Paul, who eventually acknowledges her as an apostle, too. Jonna-Lynn Mandelbaum’s book follows this extraordinary woman as she breaks from her prescribed role in society, takes charge of her own destiny, and embarks on a truly remarkable life.

By Sandy Cody I have read other books by Jonna-Lynn and have always been impressed with how she incorporates true events with bits of fiction interspersed. She has an expertise for historical information and filling in the gaps with her own creative storytelling. Many of us have heard of the apostle Paul, but are not as familiar with Thekla, his faith-filled follower. From the first page to the very last, the reader is captivated with the journey Thekla sets herself upon to escape her mother's awful clutches, death by fire and an arena of wild animals. Daphne, a friend of Thekla's father who has strong maternal instincts to protect, is so taken by Thekla's cause to locate Paul and learn from his teachings. Together, the women draw strength from each other to go beyond societal norms of the 1st Century. Jonna-Lynn has a perfect balance of dialogue along with narration to keep this story flowing and have the reader captivated for what's coming up next.

Unique story about a fascinating friendship By Susan C Sims A well-researched and vivid exploration into the life of Thekla, an extra-biblical figure of both legend and history. Daphne, as her fictional mentor, is an equally interesting character, and in their relationship, we get a glimpse into the challenges associated with being a woman in first-century Roman society. You really get a strong sense of what it was like in that time and place through detailed description.

It isn't easy, and it leads to an unusual alliance between two women who both live outside the expected norms of the day but firmly within their own circle of belief.
