This book is a collection of stories about men, women, and children struggling to regain their health from Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses. There is Sage, who was repeatedly told she was losing her mind as her health rapidly declined. There is James, who was diagnosed with MS. There is Alexandra, whose son Mike had ADHD and a multitude of other health issues. And there is Ann, who was taking over two dozen prescription drugs at one point for all her diagnoses. There was one insidious culprit behind all of their suffering: Lyme disease and related tick-borne illnesses. These memoirs recount the stories of Lyme disease survivors who had to become their own advocates to start their journeys of healing.

I have only had the book for two days and have re-read passages and underlined parts of the book that I connected with. I could identify with so much in this book. As I read each essay I found myself wanting to yell, “Yes! Me too!” as these pioneers described what they went through, how they were treated and how they felt. It must have been terrifying to take their health into their own hands, yet that is exactly what they had to do to get well. They were very brave. I’ve heard that Lyme is called The Great Imitator and knew Lyme can present in many ways, but these essays opened my eyes to how varied the symptoms can be. I will continue re-read this book to underscore in my mind that I am not alone and there is hope.

My wife and two children also suffer from the disease with symptoms that range from mild to severe. Over the years I have read dozens of books and articles about Lyme written by doctors, public health officials, victims and the loved ones of victims. All offer information and insight into the disease and were worth reading. But none of them resonate like the passionate voices in the four stories told in Escape from the Lyme Inferno. Each of them tells about the harrowing odysseys that took them through encounters with ignorant and/or indifferent medical professionals who told them that ‘it is just in your head.’ Yet after years of frustrating pharmaceutical treatments and alternative ‘cures’ they refused to be dismissed or trivialized. The heroes of the stories are the parents and friends who never lost hope and finally found a measure of vindication and relief for their efforts. At the center of each story are the victims themselves who overcame their confusion and suffering and learned to live with and ameliorate their pain. These are four stories of triumph and celebration, not of miraculous cures, but of spirit and the reader will feel the depth of the Lyme experience more fully.I heartily recommend the book to anyone who has or knows someone who has Lyme. We will share empathy with those with a disease that only recently has surfaced as a major public health problem.

Imagine not being able to sleep and having continuous headaches. And no one can tell you why. More and more of us know someone with Lyme, and the numbers keep growing. This book gives a view as to what it is like to experience this life altering disease. We all need to understand this better, not only to know what those with Lyme are going through, but also to know why we should all be worried about getting Lyme. These are stories of determination and courage, of patients who kept getting the wrong answers from the medical community and kept searching for health. Much can be learned from these inspirational pages.
