I originally bought it for my husband for Christmas, but ended up reading it before he could finish. It's a great book that is very easy to read, I think I finished it in a day. An awesome look into the life of Pete and a great motivator to be "dedicated for life."

He doesn’t just eat big, he eats healthy and it was really interesting to see how he took control of his illness, anorexia, and became famous on YouTube. A really fun book for anyone interested in healthy eating and dieting, and he is such a great persona that I loved learning more about what he has to say. Two thumbs up for this one.

I’m interested in dieting, healthy eating and related subjects and as I noticed that a professional eater like Furious Pete takes health and fitness seriously, I decided to take a look at this one. I learned quite a bit about his background and his story was definitely inspiring and talks about overcoming issues he had. It has motivated me to stay on the course with my health and gives plenty of useful advice on the subject. Glad I found out about him and learned more on what he has to say, highly recommended.

Woods In this work, Richmond-based author Thomas Nelson Page describes the struggles of a young Southern man, Gordon Keith, whose estate was stripped from him following the Confederacy's defeat. After his father is reduced to being a paid overseer of the crumbling estate, Keith vows to earn enough money to repurchase it from opportunistic Northern carpet-baggers and return it to its former glory.The protagonist does this by harnessing Northern capital in Southern mining ventures, though along the way he is faced with an array of serious personal and professional challenges by unscrupulous materialists within New York elite circles. Primary among the antagonists is Ferdy Wickersham, who would appear to be Page's archetype of the conniving, dishonorable Yankee, who will literally stop at nothing to acquire enough money and status to secure a position within the elite class. The addition of a series of romantic subplots allows Page to also contrast what he depicts as the compromised and debased state of Northern romance and matrimony with his idealistic (and arguably traditional) view of women.While the book is an enjoyable read, Page is clearly unwilling to engage here in any meaningful criticism of Southern civilization. For a more balanced fictional look at late 19th and early 20th century Virginia, the reader would be better off looking to Page's compatriot, Ellen Glasgow, who strove to counter the romanticized Southern idealism of authors such as Page.

"I am grateful to have had a life full of music," is how John Hsu ends this memoir that documents his long, successful career. Born in China, he received his early musical training in Shanghai in the 1940's with Jewish émigrés from Europe. Leaving China in 1949, just as the Communists were taking over the country, he came to the U.S. for college. After receiving his Master's degree from the New England Conservatory (which awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in 1971), he joined the faculty of Cornell University, where he taught for 50 years. While teaching cello as his primary responsibility at Cornell, Hsu learned to play the viola da gamba and had an acclaimed career specializing in the difficult French solo repertoire. He is the editor of the complete instrumental works of Marin Marais, the most prolific composer of the time. In 2001 the French government conferred on Hsu the Chevalier de l'ordre des arts et des letters for his concerts, recordings and edition of French music. An accomplished performer on the viola da gamba, the cello, and the baryton, he became a conductor along the way, leading the Apollo Ensemble (a period instrument orchestra he founded) in Haydn symphonies and the Cornell Symphony Orchestra in works from the 18th to the 20th centuries. After retiring from Cornell in 2005, he guest-conducted the Vivaldi Project Ensemble and became Artistic Director and Conductor of the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra. Told in short chapters, full of anecdotes, copiously illustrated, this memoir will be of interest to anyone curious about the development of the period instrument movement, the viola da gamba, Jews in China during the war, Haydn baryton trios, or the life of an extraordinary musician who captivated audiences for decades with his artistry, expressiveness, and eloquence.

In this memoir of a lively, talented and humane Chinese musician of the 20th century, we follow John Hsu as he comes to the US in 1949, continues his education as a cellist, embraces the viola da gamba, masters the baryton and early music performance and becomes a conductor of a wide range of music. All the while he is much loved as a professor, chamber instrumentalist, recording artist, Haydn scholar and valued colleague at Cornell for half a century. Bodlly pain forces him to give up his playing and characteristically he stretches his boundaries and develops his conducting career with his same gusto for living with good humor, depth and breadth. Martha Hsu, his life partner and former music librarian at Cornell has deftly helped to assemble this endlessly interesting book.

Down-to-earth convergence of the scientific and the spiritual By Pamela I always have my eye out for authors who are interested in bringing together the scientific and the spiritual. If we assume (as I do) that there is reality to the existence of spiritual realms, beings, and principles, and that there is validity to the process of scientific inquiry, then it's obvious that the two must eventually meet. And this is in spite of the mistrust and downright animosity that partisans on both sides of this divide often show toward each other.This book is a very welcome step toward the integration of these two perspectives on "reality." It is not a lofty philosophical treatise, but rather a down-to-earth book that couples an engaging travelogue (about a trip to heaven!) with a very practical set of tips for improving readers' spiritual, emotional, and physical livesThe book is co-authored by a cardiologist/psychotherapist and a plumber from the Bronx. The cardiologist (Stephen Sinatra, MD) provides the scientific perspective, and the plumber (Tommy Rosa) the spiritual perspective that he received during a near-death experience (NDE) after being hit by a car.In Rosa's visit to "heaven" during his NDE, he received teachings from a haloed teacher he identifies as Jesus, and he recounts other encounters with Archangel Michael, Mother Mary, and guardian angels, all figures consistent with his Roman Catholic faith. Since Jesus told him that all faiths should be respected, however, he speculates that people of different faiths might encounter a teacher in the form of Moses, Muhammad, Krishna, or the Buddha during a NDE. In other words, while the teachings that he relates come from a specific divine source, they're ultimately presented as non-sectarian, good news for readers of other faith backgrounds.In addition to relating Rosa's fascinating experiences during and after the NDE, the book is organized around a number of "revelations" that he received in heaven, along with corresponding insights and health tips from Dr. Sinatra. Many of these are tied together by the notion that our health, happiness, and ability to serve others are dependent on our "vibration," and that this vibration can be lowered by such things as fear, selfishness, anger, diet, drugs and alcohol, and exposure to electromagnetic radiation.In the chapter on faithfulness, for example, Rosa recounts some of the challenging exercises his teacher put him through to demonstrate the importance of conquering fear, which has the effect of attracting to us precisely that which we are afraid of. In other chapters, Rosa's teacher and Sinatra concur on the beneficial effects of a wide range of factors, such as faith, self-love, connection with others, a diet that supports the mitochondria (!), and the importance of frequent "grounding" -- exposing yourself to the healing vibration of the Earth by such simple (but forgotten) practices as walking barefoot or in thin leather-soled shoes. Overall, as Sinatra puts it, "The key is to connect as fully as possible with who you are and what makes you happy."There's a lot in here. Rosa's personal story is amazing and inspiring, and the sections from Sinatra contain some very specific cardiologist-approved health tips. And for me, it was a joy to see the converging perspectives of these two authorities, one from the realm of the spiritual, and one from the realm of science.

Tommy has literally spelled out, in black and white, so simply yet eloquently, the most powerful truths that he brought back from heaven. As I finished reading this book, and closed the cover, I could not stop crying. I wasn't crying because I was sad, I was crying from a sense of elation. Finally, there it was in writing, you can 'DO THIS RIGHT" and make the world a better place to live in. What an amazing journey Tommy Rosa experienced and came back to share. As I read about his journey I felt like I was experiencing it with him. The first time I heard of it was when I was in Woodlands Hospital in Calcutta when my nurse told me about it and the many beauti By Linnet Mushran It is a dear little book but my personal interest in it was because for 15 years we lived in the same area (but the other side of Ranchi) so I could identify with many places mentioned in the book. And I wished so much that we had gone to McCluskiganj - but we never did! The first time I heard of it was when I was in Woodlands Hospital in Calcutta when my nurse told me about it and the many beautiful bungalows there. The book brings out the immense love the original "settlers" had for their township but the language is odd and quaint sometimes.

By hailyard I have the next larger size to this Montgomery 15 so wanted to find out what works for this hull design. Some good information but a slice of the narrative was just repetition of a very succinct long log entry.

I totally cried like a baby while reading her struggles with dealing with this devastating, life threatening event. However, there are instances in the story I burst out in laughter. You see, that is how Kate handled her journey, with humor as well as with grace and dignity. INSPIRING, yes that is the word I am searching for, to reflect how I feel after reading her awesome, yet heart-aching journey, knowing at the end, she is a SURVIVOR!Kate explains throughout her book, her reason for fighting is her kiddos, her husband, her parents, siblings, family and friends. What better reasons to fight for your life?!? I say, none.Kate wrote about depression as well in the book. I battle with depression and anxiety on a daily basis, and have heard many people say, 'Just snap out of it!' It isn't that easy! Kate handled this topic with great care and yes, once again left me in tears.I recommend this book to all who may be suffering through their own battles, whether it be physically or mentally. YOU too can be a SURVIVOR!

By Amazon Customer Kate Mathias gives the reader an intimate view into her life as she underwent major illness and surgery. This book can encourage others dealing with similar medical challenges to continue to live their life to the fullest. Kate shows that through her trials she tried to keep life as normal as possible for her family but it most definitely wasn't and she is honest about how that affected them. There are stories that make you laugh and stories that will make you cry. To those who have not been through a trial like this it helps us to understand what that person is going through so they may have more compassion for those who are facing these trials. I think it extremely brave of Kate to share her personal story in a way that can help others going through similar issues. The book also shows the depth of friendships she shares and how much love her family has for her. Kate is selfless and brave enough to allow others to help her and her family during this time. I learned that when you go through something like this it is important to admit that not everything is ok and that you need help. It takes a special bravery to ask for that kind of help when you are not able to do the things you are normally able to do for your family. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is going though a trial or just wants to be a better friend. It reminds me of 1st Corinthians verse 13:13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. How do we show love to others? -by reading this book you will be inspired to take the opportunity to love others more in ways that are meaningful and sincere. Great book…could not stop reading it once I started.

By Amazon reader This is the journey of a young mom who is challenged by having to face multiple health issues. The ultimate challenge is a brain tumor, which has not been diagnosed for a period of time. There are stories that make you laugh and some that make you cry. The author is able to recreate her ups and downs in a believable and heartfelt way. Readers with small children will be able to relate to her daily efforts to keep their lives as normal as possible. Kate manages to battle many obstacles and she does it with a grace and wit that is inspirational. She exhibits great courage while also admitting to moments that are dark, scary, and difficult to overcome. Oprah said, " Breathe. Let go. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure." I think this could be Kate's mantra for going forward. Stay tuned for her next book about her recovery.

I was born to a devout Christian family of German ancestry in 1938, in Alt-Postall, Bessarabia, a German settlement in Russia. In 1940, orders came from Hitler through the German SS that the residents in the area where we lived were to be expelled and deported to Poland so that the areas captured at the start of WWII could be repopulated with German people. This forced departure was the first of many times in my young life that our family was to lose virtually all of our possessions. These departures included, but were not limited to, our hasty and anxious trek ahead of the Red Army near the end of WWII and even our eventual immigration to the USA. During the course of my adult life, I have had the privilege of hearing the stories of many parishioners, patients, and their families. I have also had the opportunity to speak with them or others about portions of my own life story and have been encouraged to write it down.

Goldenslaughter is the Queen of Night and she is basically a force of nature in this story, bending every circumstance to her will and ruling with an iron fist. She gets a little carried away which causes some dire consequence but wow does she ever kick ass. Loved it, can’t wait to read how she deals with the fallout in the next one.

The concept is good: it is about a supernatural Lady, the Queen of Night, and her struggle to consolidate her control over her world. She struggles with her subjects, with her responsibilities, with her power, and with herself; it's a story with a lot of interest, a lot of conflict, a lot of places it could go. I like the writing style: short sentences, short paragraphs, breaks where there shouldn't be breaks; it makes the reader consider the words more carefully, makes us notice what's being said. There's an element of the epic in the writing, in the way certain phrases – her blue-black hair and black dress; the old hard-bitten gold carpet in her throne room – are repeated, almost Homeric. And the name, of course, is brilliant: Goldenslaughter. I still don't know: are the last two syllables “slaughter” – or “laughter?” I love that ambiguity, as much as I love both possibilities.But the potential is not quite realized. The writing style is interesting, but the mechanical mastery is insufficient to allow the style to really flow; there are flaws in the writing, in the editing, that make the reader question what is intentional, what just a mistake, and that means the moments when you notice what the prose is doing, when you see it start to dance – you don't know if it's only stumbling. The epic phrases are too few, and too often repeated; they start to seem dull, rather than classical. The storyline gets lost in the mystery: the story begins with Goldenslaughter already having conquered her realm, gained the loyalty of her subjects, and then lost that loyalty through an attempt to gain total mastery of the Power that keeps her on the throne. Coming in to the middle of the plot can work, but there has to be a careful process of backbuilding, through flashbacks and the like, so that the audience can gain a complete understanding of how the story got to where it is; this book doesn't do that. The best way I can put it is that the book makes the reader work too hard to understand what's going on, rather than the writer doing all of the heavy lifting for the audience. Here: an example. There is a scene in the early going when Goldenslaughter confers with the Lady of Elements, who has had a prophetic dream; that dream gives hints of what will happen to Goldenslaughter. By the end of the book, that dream comes true, and after that happens, Goldenslaughter and the Lady mention that earlier discussion, and the warning that the Lady offered to her Queen, which the Queen did not heed. This is all fine: except the poetic language the two use in the first discussion is too abstract, and I for one had no idea what the Lady was talking about until the later scene when Goldenslaughter refers to it. So the foreshadowing of the prophecy was lost on me, as were all of the hints of what Goldenslaughter meant to do and why it would be challenging and dangerous.The end of the book is the best part: the final climax is well-done, with a good battle scene and a really fine resolution to the central conflict, when Goldenslaughter makes her choice about who and what she is. I just couldn't really follow most of the book leading up to that, even though I enjoyed reading it.

Lee, Author (LRWLee dot com) I have to say, it took me a while to get in to the writing style which is lyrical in nature, but after I did,I found the prose peeked my curiosity trying to figure out what was going to unfold. In addition to the style, not being used to having Night/Darkness be a character threw me as well. It kind of reminded me of The Book Thief from the perspective of Death being a character. But I would say the author did a good job constructing a compelling story.

Mel Renfro: Forever a Cowboy, an authorized biography, relates the life journey of an early Cowboy legend. Unlike today, the salaries in the '60s were miniscule and the good players usually stayed with one team. When Mel Renfro was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 1964, the struggling team got one of the nation's top two-sport athletes. Not only was the native Oregonian multitalented in both football and track and field, he received high school and college All-American honors. If not for his love for football, he may have been an Olympic decathlon medalist. After Mel arrived in Dallas, Coach Tom Landry recognized his talents and started him in the lineup. Mel responded by setting team records, and he was selected to play in the first of his ten consecutive Pro Bowls, becoming MVP in the 1970 game. Being a member of "Doomsday Defense I," the Cowboy defenders who played six years together from 1966-1971 and led the team to the Super Bowl VI win, was the highlight for Mel. His play as the best "shutdown" cornerback for years earned him the Cowboy Ring of Honor, and after an anxious 14-year wait, a Pro Football Hall of Fame induction in 1996. Forever a Cowboy also reveals Mel's human side, discussing how he dealt with his life-after-football and the struggles that came with it. But the completion of the loop as a Cowboy legend was Mel's selection to the Hall of Fame in 1996. Today, Mel still lives in Dallas and wears his two Super Bowl rings proudly.

The book captures his life on and off the field -- told for the first time. The forewords by Bob Lilly and Roger Staubach speak volumes. Mel identified strongly with the Doomsday defense and its importance for the Cowboys to overcome the tag of "next year's team" to play in Super Bowl V and win Super Bowl VI. There is also a compelling human side of Mel as he dealt with his life after football. With good research, his records support his inductions into 10 hall of fames--a true high school, college and pro football star.

Frink I so appreciated the scope of football history that encompassed generations from the 1940's though to the present. Mel Renfro's journey encapsulated the dreams and aspirations of so very many individuals within our society. From the Vanport Flood, to the JFK assignation, and other prominent events of our times, are all felt and experienced again through Mel Renfro's journey. I highly recommend it to every football fan and to any who has a dream.

Lewis Is On Target Again By Angelus I enjoyed Bill Lewis' "Bowhunting" so much I decided to take a look at this one on spearfishing which I have had an on-again-off-again interest in for years. This is just as good and delivers the same level of detail regarding the best ways to start off spearfishing, improve and enjoy the sport. Great book for novices and the more experienced alike. Once again, highly recommended.

By Jennifer Nielsen By their very nature shorter novels must quickly create an investment between the reader and the characters through solid character development and growth. The emotional connection Ms. McKay produces so effortlessly shows she is a master at her craft and clearly loves her work. This is a beautifully written, heartwrenching story about people you'll wish you actually knew in real life. As this is her debut novel, I am anxiously awaiting her further works. You won't be disappointed.

Hello there, I am Leandra Vane. I write a sexuality and book review blog called The Unlaced Librarian. I read a lot of books about sex, so I figured it’s about time I wrote one. My entire life I have been working to understand three core aspects of my identity: My sexuality, my visible physical disability and my femininity. For the longest time, I never thought I’d be able to live in a world that accepted all three without reprisal. Part memoir, part commentary on social issues in sex and disability, I write about my experiences growing from a timid, small town “nice girl” to an empowered, confidently sexual and kinky disabled woman. From my first pair of sexy panties through navigating my open marriage, I hope to shed light on how embodied experiences play a role in shaping our sexual lives. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. One of the best books I've read in a while By Jeff Finley One of the best books I've read in a while. Such honest and intimate writing. It was so relatable and I found myself feeling inspired and hopeful for my own "sexual coming-of-age" in my 30s. We may not all have the same challenges, but are all "passing" in some form or another. Meaning, we try to fit into society and "be normal", but are hiding our true selves underneath fear and shame. Leandra puts this struggle into such beautiful words. She doesn't hold back and has the courage to talk about taboo subjects with such intelligence and vulnerability. I can't recommend this book enough for anyone who is trying to be more authentic and true to themselves.

Her experience living with a visible disability has made her extraordinarily clear on social lenses, narratives, and that disparity between how you feel and how you are perceived.Her stories are relatable regardless of your experience with a disability, because she speaks to the interpersonal and intrapersonal experience of self-understanding and expression. Disability itself simply becomes a symbol of that thing in each of us that we've been told not to show, that thing we fear expressing, that thing we struggle to integrate into our healthy sense of self.One of my very favorite aspects of this book is the heavy somatic component. Vane has become a master of embodiment through her journey of extreme intimacy with her body, which has at times included the experience of checking out from her body. It strikes me that, as a person with unavoidable pain, she does not avoid pain in general. This is paramount to being in your body. You will experience pain as well as pleasure and neutrality. That's not a reason to run. As Vane demonstrates with incredible clarity and humor, it is a reason to get really, really good at knowing what your body likes.Here are just a few of my favorite verses from her about embodiment:"I've been in many places and out of body has been by far the most excruciating and unbearable.""...my sexuality was crucial to having a whole, finished experience in my body.""I learned pleasure would not abandon me."Other vital topics that she covers include kink, passing, porn, non-monogamy, and s***.

Some people are overwhelmed by life's challenges; Leandra Vane looked them in the eye, worked through her fears, and decided to be herself. At least three of her decisions (to be in an open and ethical relationship with her husband, to investigate the world of kink, and to become a sex blogger) put her at odds with America's Puritanical and hypocritical attitudes about sex. To be disabled was not her choice. But she seems to be doing a better job than many more-able-bodied people in showing a lively interest and care in looking after herself. There is a fierce, funny, and altogether likable honesty about Leandra Vane. Recommended.
