As hard-hitting, pacy, and entertaining an autobiography as you would expect from a giant of Ulster and Ireland rugby. "When I came into the Ulster team," Stephen Ferris says with typical candor, "we were crap." It was, however, preferable to his day job of paving driveways, and that day in 2005 saw the start of an incredible journey for Ferris, Ulster, and Ireland rugby. A Celtic League title in his very first senior season with Ulster. A Grand Slam in 2009, followed by a sensational Lions breakthrough. A starring role in Ireland's greatest World Cup win, over Australia in 2011, when Ferris famously picked up Will Genia and carried him 10 yards. And leading Ulster from nowhere to the Heineken Cup final. Stephen Ferris had an incredible rugby career, tragically ended by ankle injuries so severe they will never properly heal. He is an inspiration to the population of Ulster, an emblem of the sport that serves as such a positive expression of its culture and identity, and earned the respect and admiration of fans across Ireland for his strength, pace, skill, and courage. Fearless, funny, and full of an incredible array of stories from behind the scenes of Ulster, Ireland, and the Lions, this is the must-have rugby book of the year.

Review "Written in a colloquial style that reassures you this is Ferris's story in his own words, this is a cracking read... compelling." Rugby World, Book of the Month

About the Author

Stephen Ferris is only player not from the traditional schools system to make it into the Ulster academy. Quickly established as the province's best prospect, he played for the Ireland Under-20s at the 2005 World Cup and made his senior Ulster debut in October of that year. Ferris went on to make more than 100 appearances for Ulster, winning the Celtic League in 2006, when he was named Ulster Player of the Year, and taking them to the final of the Heineken Cup in 2012 as they established themselves as one of the top teams in Europe. After making his Test debut in 2006, he won 35 caps for Ireland, winning the Grand Slam in 2009, when he also toured South Africa with the British & Irish Lions, and reaching the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 2011. He retired from playing in June 2014, after a long battle with injury.

Stephen is quite frank about his own expectations, experiences and opinions on the life of a professional rugby player, and the demands on him, mentally and physically throughout his career. A great read.

A Curious Window on Australian Comic Books and Politics By Paul Ewert This brief overview of the life of Philip Wearne is a cautionary tale of unbridled self-interest. From fighting for his recognition and ownership of his derivative comic book work to his political machinations, Wearne increasingly compounded his personal damage caused by short-sighted self-interest.

Guns, drug money and the CIA... These were not your average bankers. This was not your average bank. In 1980, following the mysterious death of Australian merchant banker, Frank Nugan, his New York-born partner, Michael Hand, brazenly ordered the destruction of the bank's records. Hand then disappeared from Sydney and hasn't been seen since. Among the ruins of the Nugan Hand global financial empire, investigators uncovered astonishing evidence of gunrunning, money laundering for drug traffickers and connections to the CIA. When the FBI and a Royal Commission failed to join the dots, those intimately involved with the case suspected a cover up. Brimming with chilling new evidence and powerful testimonies, Merchants of Menace cracks open the sensational Nugan Hand story and goes on the hunt for the world's most elusive corporate fugitive... 'The FBI integrated me on behalf of the Australians. The agents asked what I knew about the Nugan Hand bank and what happened to Frank Nugan. I said 'I don't know. But whatever it was, it was the lynchpin that started everything crumbling.' He kept saying, 'Do you know where Michael Hand is?' and I said, 'No' He said. 'Are you sure?' Finally I said to him, 'Look, why don't you ask the CIA in Langley Virginia and maybe they will tell you where he is, because they know.' I don't think they were really looking for Michael and they certainly weren't going to tell the Australian government where he was.' - Douglas A Sapper III

Dark Era of Australian History By Malcolm Cameron Merchants of Menaceby Peter Butt‘Merchants of Menace’ gives the facts, as known, of the notorious Nugan Hand bank up to 9 November 2015 when author Peter Butt found fugitive Michael Hand alive and well in the small American town of Iadho Falls.Hand disappeared in June 1980 after his partner Frank Nugan was found dead in his Mercedes outside Lithgow NSW beside a 30-calibre rifle in an apparent suicide. The Australian based Nugan Hand bank collapsed with debts of over $50 million in 1980 with evidence of money laundering, tax avoidance, violation of banking laws and suspicion of drug dealing, gun-running, organized crime and clandestine intelligence activities with rumours of CIA and organized crime involvement.Presumably, justice will now be done and the full story revealed. Hence Peter Butt’s book is a timely primer to the continuing investigation of this dark era of Australian history which includes political connections, the 1977 murder of anti-drugs campaigner and Liberal Party candidate Donald Mackay in Griffith and aspects of the Vietnam war. The question is when.Malcolm Cameron1 December 2015

From the Foreword:

This is my second book about what it was like for a boy to grow up in Fargo from 1953 to 1980.  Make no mistake – the idea of writing these is Not so readers will come to know Me personally.  My life isn't all that notable.  I just tell stories.  In this book, I am somewhat more reflective than narrative – it isn't so much What happened that's interesting, but what lessons could be derived.

That era – 1950-1980 – is too often overlooked down on the Personal level.  Yeah – everyone has heard about the Big Historical Things, but few actually experienced most of those.

As one of my high school classmates (whose name is Very well-known in Fargo to this day) confided in a recent email, "I guess I assumed I was the only kid with an inner life."

She wasn't.  We all had Inner Lives.  We all experienced them in our own way, figuring that there was some sort of Unique thing going on that wasn't anything like the lives we saw publicized on television.  We saw the Ozzie and Harriet fantasy, where Moms and Dads were always just 100% appropriate, Fine Upstanding People in their communities, with handsome children and No genuine problems other than those silly plotlines that went on for a half hour. With commercials.

Our families weren't like that, and we were led to believe that If they weren't, there was Something Wrong – with us!

The television shows were lying.

Real People – people we knew and saw every day – didn't live like that.  Families were Not always close-knit and friendly.  Real tragedies happened and left lifelong scars.  The moments of genuine joy were so unusual that we often didn't recognize them when they happened.

Our reaction was predicated on how the television shows suggested we Should act, and not on how Real People actually experienced living and loving in a time of great social change.

So many old friends, and even folks I've never met before, have commented that after reading the Being Fargo, their own memories of their own lives somehow got freed from a lifelong set of inappropriate expectations.  Several suggested that they had believed that somehow their lives were more Failure than Success, and that had stayed with them over the years.

We are a ridiculous and endlessly funny species – sometimes.  We are also tragic and sad – sometimes.  Both experiences play out, and each teaches us something.  But we tend far too often forget or overlook the intensity of the Joy, and instead make a point of endlessly re-living the sadness.

There's no point in that.

There are many lives that really Were tragedies in many ways.  Some of those early experiences colored our abilities to experience much else over the years, so some sort of internal balance is now in order.  We would do well to remember the fun, the silliness, the funny parts and sometimes just the sheer Joy of being alive.  And having survived to remember.

If these stories provide a context for seeing how Life was experienced at the time, how the central experience of learning to Love could come about, consider them my gift.

Bary I had enjoyed Don's first book, which told his story of growing up in Fargo and the (primarily) teachers who influenced him so greatly to value honesty and depth of inquiry. He and I had shared our life stories to date as 21-year-olds far from home serving with the 11th Combat Aviation Battalion in Vietnam. Not entirely sure that we would survive to enjoy the grown-up lives we had spent 20 years preparing for, it seemed important (and fun) to tell our story to another in similar circumstances. "Being" carried his story forward from the time we parted company, told with humor and conviction. As promised in the Foreword, "Becoming" is more an internal journey than a physical journey. Whether or not you grew up in Fargo, or the 1950s/1960s, I think it touches on experiences and feelings common to most young males - scouting/summer camp, the sudden awareness of and wonderment about Girls. The section on his first real adult love relationship with LOLL is truly touching. The later chapters about MEOW and MIA CULPA reintroduce us to Don at his snarky best, but with the credit shared with a host of friends. If you enjoyed "Being", I think you will enjoy "Becoming". I did.

Although if you are a hockey fan, you will thoroughly enjoy all the detailed info! I felt like I was on their journey, learned some great traveling lessons, got some great ideas, felt their gratitude, passion, and most of all it made me start thinking not only about a bucket list, but what I could do to make those seemingly unattainable thoughts a reality. Great read and a great gift!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Their love and passion for the game come through loud and ... By Ramon K. Jusino The title of the book is The Hockey Tour. But this book is only incidentally about hockey. It is a journey story. It is a story about two young ladies who, after having been inspired by the movie The Bucket List, began to contemplate their own “bucket lists.” The authors take the reader on their journey, from the early planning stages to its conclusion. Their goal: to watch at least one hockey game at each of the 30 NHL arenas in one season. Their love and passion for the game come through loud and clear in this book. The authors challenge the reader to think about what they would do if given the opportunity to throw caution to the wind for several months and embark on such a journey just for the love of it. At the end of the book, the reader is encouraged: “Whatever it is that you are passionate about, whatever it is that drives you, whatever it is that you feel you are meant to do, don’t wait. Do it now.”What is your “bucket list” journey? You will, no doubt, reflect on this question while reading this book. Hockey might not be your thing. Your bucket list journey might be another sport, or another venue entirely, or traveling to places you’ve always wanted to go, or meeting people you’ve always wanted to meet…etc. Anything. Think of that one thing you’ve always wanted to do, but never had the courage or discipline to carry out. This is the story of two young ladies who thought about these things, and then acted on those thoughts. They followed their bliss. This book is packed with a lot of information about each of the games they attended. Look for a few surprises as well. Enjoy.

Howard Feldman was a high-flying commodity trader, living a seemingly perfect life, with a perfect wife and perfect children, in an unbelievably perfect world. His tie was Hermès and belt Ferragamo. Suits were Boss or Armani, shoes were Prada. Rolex was passé unless it was the Daytona. Ties had to be skinny, unless you were not. Louis Vuitton luggage was "showy" unless plain black.

But then this "King of Chrome" gets attacked. And attacked again. Then he gets sick. His business folds. And his carry-on baggage simply gets too heavy to hold.

As Howard unpacks his bags both literal and metaphorical he unravels all the "perfect" banners he has raised to the world, his family, his community and himself. He measures their value against a new benchmark of success, and reconsiders his life s travels from Zug to Zimbabwe, New York to Tel Aviv. Returning home to South Africa, he discovers not just the meaning of home, family and friendship, but also himself.

Carry-On Baggage: The Story of a Man Who Thought He Travelled Light, by Howard Feldman

About the Author A businessman, philanthropist and social commentator, Howard Feldman is also a commodity trader with a (not-so-secret) passion for writing. He got side-tracked for an exceedingly long time before remembering how much he loved to write.

Born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, he attended Wits University studying English Literature and completing his law degree. Howard is Chairman of the Board of the SAJR (South African Jewish Report), the only weekly Jewish focused newspaper in South Africa. He is rapidly gaining an impressive reputation for his erudite insights on the crazy world we live in.

Warshawsky The story of a forty five year old man with unique life experiences, told without any hint of pretense or self righteousness. While it can be argued that all of us have compelling tales to tell, Mr. Feldman has done it with the gift of a master storyteller and a talented writer.I found myself reading the book in one sitting. This is not a saccharine recollection of a tormented man who finds salvation as he travels through life to finally uncover its meaning. Rather it is an honest baring of the soul of a man who has experienced much and is poised to encounter much more in his full and often turbulent life. One senses that Mr. Feldman has written this book more for himself and his need for clarity, than his intended audience, which makes it all the more endearing. Without pontification and a complete lack of smugness, this is a story we can all relate to, as at its core it the story of our lives.

He was the King of Chrome Ore not only in South Africa, but internationally. He had six offices around the world. He had a strong marriage, a beautiful wife, five children, a gorgeous home and he lived in Johannesburg, Israel, New York, Switzerland and travelled extensively. So much so that he was recognised by flight attendants and he had associates literally falling at his feet. He answered emails on tours and searched for signals on safari. He found out that, “traders don’t do work-life balance.” He met presidents of African nations, financiers, lawyers, thieves and con men. He made piles of money and wore only top international brands like Boss, Prada, Hermes and Panerai. But then he got attacked. He was back at work in an hour. Then he got sick. Three months later he was attacked again. And his business folded. And his carry-on baggage simply got to heavy to lug. The perfection was unsustainable.Feldman unpacks his bags in this book – both literally and metaphorically– and he unravels all the very perfect banners he raised to the world, his family, his community and himself.Living once more in South Africa, he discovers not just the meaning of home, family and friendship, but also himself. Howard offers insight as to how we can survive our own existence in a positive way without having to hide who we really are. He rejects the belief that we will be rejected if people see our authentic selves.

Strange things have started to happen in the small town of Holy Cross. Black cats, sneaking suspicions and wine-powered ecstasy lay their grip on the clueless inhabitants and local news strongly suspects witches are behind it all. Meanwhile, poor Rosie McLeod is simply trying to deal with day to day catastrophes including lapsang souchong tea, carpet slippers and the impending doom of old age. With the innocent brewing of some herbs the frontiers between innocence and guilt, logic and magic, start to shift and events come thick and fast. Charles Gray’s debut novel is a highly entertaining trip to Scottish village life and what really happens beneath its apparent dullness. The pillars of every community – church, politics, and pub – take a pounding and events of mystical origin claim their sacrifices. But who is the offender? And what is the charge? The Herbal Detective is an outstanding story that stays gripping until the very end.

It has Jun Fan Gung Fu, grappling, kali, kickboxing, and everything else anyone could ever want in a JKD book. Also, it is VERY well written and has very helpful pictures. Mr. Balicki knows his stuff and it shows in this book. It has very helpful drills and techniques that can be easily learned and applied. It also has a cool (but not as helpful as I would have liked) section on handling group attacks. I highly recommend it!

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Eclectic and interesting book By magellan I'm a pretty eclectic martial artist myself, having trained in Okinawan, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Filipino, and western systems, including empty-handed and weapons-based styles, so the very eclectic aspect of this book didn't bother me as much as some people. For me it's all "sauce for the goose," as they say. If you have primarily trained in one or two arts, this book will expose you to some other concepts, which is fine, too. For me, the most important aspect of the book was the section devoted to multiple attackers. From my own experience in training and teaching martial arts, this area is one of the most neglected. Other than the classic Nakayama and Draeger book on defense against multiple assailants, which of course was Shotokan-based, and Bucksom Kong's Tiger-Crane set Hung Gar book, which showed some applications of the form, there are few books on the market covering situations with multiple attackers. But these scenarios should be practiced also, especially by advanced students who are already compentent defending man-on-man with one attacker.

While it tends to be a little too philosophical it has great drills and training tips for any JKD practioner. I am an Asst. Instructor in JKD and I can tell you that I use a lot of the material from this book when I teach. Trust me get this Book!

A Pennymaker Tale

Young Snowden “Snow” Reynaldi is brilliant, beautiful, and alone. Though he’s shy, weird, and tolerated by the NorCal University students because he’s a renowned whiz at chess and helps put the school on the map, that doesn’t keep him from dreaming of the object of his desires: Riley Prince, championship quarterback.

When Riley needs a physics tutor, Snow jumps at the chance, and their relationship heats up―but Riley has to come out of the jock closet to get anywhere. Meanwhile, Snow’s one true friend and mentor, Professor Kingsley, marries a woman who secretly wants the chess tournament glory and money for herself. Soon after, the professor collapses and Snow finds himself underwater―literally. In a car!

Seven frat brothers from Grimm College rescue Snow just in time for his life to get even worse, and Snow discovers the one relationship he always wanted slipping away. With evil looming at every turn, Snow must survive if only to prove he’s the fairest of them all and regain the trust of his handsome prince.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. but the book constantly describes him as being more beautiful than any woman… I disagreed with that assessment and ... By Susan65 I picked up this book because I am a huge fan of this author; and that’s it. The cover didn’t grab me, the blurb didn’t grab me, and I was hard pressed to see how a nerdy chess master and a college football quarterback could breathe new life into the tried and true college athlete vs nerd theme. But I was wrong. There was so much to this story, so much depth and plot and characterization that I was actually hard pressed to even put it down. And I didn’t put it down until I finished it.The cover and the description of Snow didn’t quite work for me. He’s a cutie, for sure, but the book constantly describes him as being more beautiful than any woman… I disagreed with that assessment and forced myself to picture him differently in my head. That, my friends, was the only bad part of this story for me. Not much of an issue than, huh?Riley and Snow’s romance is actually incidental to the whole storyline…and what a crazy story it is. We have a psycho trying to discredit and possibly kill Snow, homophobia running rampant on the college campus and especially the football team, Snow being accused of any and everything to ruin his chance at a championship and love. In a way it was over the top, but at the same time, it kept me on my toes wondering what would happen next. I was entertained….highly.The many secondary characters were just as well rounded and integral as the main guys. The wacky older woman who lived in Riley’s apartment building, the fraternity from the other college that rescues Snow, Snow’s mentor, and especially his mentors lovely lady, Anitra. My head was spinning, but I never lost interest and couldn’t wait to see how the author settled all the drama. Needless to say, it has a happy ending and I highly recommend any book by this author, including this one.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. 'Driven Snow' by Tara Lain By Lena Grey “Your life lies before you like a path of driven snow, be careful how you tread it cause every step will show.” ~ Lowri WilliamsIf there was ever a person who is much more than he seems, it's Snowden “Snow” Reynaldi of Tara Lain's 'Driven Snow’. True to the expression “white as the driven snow”, he is young and beautiful and virginal. However, he's also wickedly intelligent and a master's master in chess. It is a huge mistake to underestimate him, although many do. Like Snow White, Snow is innocent in many ways, especially when it comes to having intimate relationships, and therefore quite alone. But when he realizes that someone Snow has admired from afar, his prince, Riley Prince, is interested in him, he can't help but dream that his isolation is over. When Riley starts having trouble in physics, Snow decides to tutor him. Things are rough for Riley until Snow uses football to explain the relationships of physics and game strategy. It's brilliant and Riley becomes accomplished enough to pass and keep his spot on the football team. Being together leads to a few confessions, each man telling the other their feelings. Unfortunately Riley feels he has to stay in the closet because of his football career. They meet secretly and are happy until someone starts a rumor that Snow engages in sex-for-pay, which, of course, isn't true. Riley wants to believe Snow, but there is just enough doubt to convince him. Riley turns out to not be Snow's prince after all. This breaks Snow's heart. He's not sure anything could ever make up for the hurt Riley has caused him, but Snow has to keep going, for Professor Kingsley's sake if nothing else.Professor Kinglsey, a king in Snow's eyes, is also his best friend and the closest thing Snow has to family. They work so well together that Snow can't imagine anything that would come between them. He's unpleasantly surprised when the professor comes in with a woman named Amitra, who is his fiancée. Amitra is the opposite of Snow—dark hair, olive skin, and bosomy. Snow immediately dislikes her. It goes further than jealousy or losing the complete attention of Professor Kingsley. She's beautiful and obviously intelligent, but Snow has a strong sense that Anitra is not what she appears to be. Only Snow sees her as a possible wicked witch with ulterior motives. Snow's suspicions are confirmed when attempts are made on his life.Every time I read one of Tara's stories, I delight in her ability to invent such vivid, endearing characters. Snow is no exception. In fact, he may be one of the most interesting of all with his combination of innocence, courage, and loyalty. It doesn't hurt that he's so beautiful and smart either. The thing is, Snow doesn't have a conceited bone in his body and that makes me love him more than ever. When it comes to “who's the fairest one of all” it's Snow for me, hands down. I loved the Snow White references with a king, prince, Snow White, a beautiful, but wicked witch, and, of course, the seven dwarfs, in the seven fraternity brothers who gave Snow refuge in their house. There is even a fairy godmother, in this case, a fairy godfather. I totally enjoyed this story with its twists and turns and fairy tale references. I highly recommend this tale to anyone who enjoys revisiting a childhood story with a very modern twist, wonderful characters, and, of course, a happy ending. Thank you, Tara, for your modern-day take on a beloved story.Originally reviewed at Rainbow Book Reviews.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. 3.5 Stars. By V. Rundell of V's Reads This book is a contemporary M/M romance loosely-based on the Snow White fairy tale. It's the second in the Pennymaker tales series, but has no connection to the previous book, Sinders And Ash.Snowden is a college senior and a Grandmaster chess champion. He's been working toward competing in a major international tournament at which he's the favorite to win. He's held a longstanding crush on the resident BMOC, quarterback Riley Prince, who's a fan of Snow's, too.Riley needs tutoring, and Snow's the right man for that job. Through their interactions, Riley admits that he's a closeted gay man with a beard instead of a girlfriend. Riley wants to come out, so he can date Snow openly, but there's a whole lotta drama in doing so.Meanwhile, Snow's coach and closest confidante, Prof. Kingsley reveals a rapid courtship and shotgun marriage to a suspicious woman, Anitra. Anitra is a chess champion in her own right, and the decisions she's making--to withdraw Snow from the chess championships--are bizarre. Snow's afraid he'll lose his last parental figure in his life, and he's in worse trouble, especially when Anitra enlists Hunter her well-endowed *wink wink* "cousin" Hunter to keep Snow from competing...by any means necessary. As Snow and Riley explore their potential scandal tears through Snow's world, and he's even more friendless than he'd ever been. There's a bit of contortion to bring Pennymaker back to this tale. It felt more contrived than organic, especially as Eudora seemed a capable fairy godmother for this story. That said, I never had a question about who was behind the tragic events of the book. I was pretty peeved that the homophobic football players were barely even reprimanded, let alone punished for their nastiness. This book, being based on the darker tale of Snow White was much darker than the other modern fairytale. I thought it would build more depth in the characters, but I didn't feel the tension. There were a lot of plot arcs, and Snow was a pretty sympathetic character, but I didn't really sense his agency. He seemed to be a victim for so much of the book, and Riley was a wishy-washy love interest. The ending was a bit convenient, even for a fairytale. I liked the sexytimes, because they showed a good amount of sensitivity and vulnerability. I get that these are young men--barely 21 in fact, but they sometimes read as juvenile, to me.

The Hockey Coaching Bible, by Joe Bertagna

Review

“For those of us who were fortunate to play college hockey, the lessons we learned there, on and off the ice, have never gone away. The Hockey Coaching Bible presents the best of these lessons from an array of coaches, some still active and some retired. The messages collected in this book are sure to help hockey coaches and players at all levels of the game.”

Mike Eruzione-- Captain, 1980 U.S. Olympic Team

“The hockey world is full of colorful, passionate characters. Joe Bertagna has culled some of the best and brightest from this world to collaborate on a range of coaching topics. These guys know the game intimately and deliver insightful perspectives to current or aspiring coaches. Better—and cheaper—than any coaching clinic you can find!”

Mike Milbury-- NBC Sports Network Analyst and Former NHL Player and Coach

“Some of the great coaching minds from college hockey have come together in one place to give young coaches all they need for success. They cover every aspect from building a program to setting an example for honest behavior. This is a must-read for any young hockey coach.”

Bobby Orr-- NHL Hall of Fame Defenseman

“Hockey coaching really is several vocations rolled into one—a process that combines constant teaching, communication, and counseling with full-time study of the sport. Every time a coach runs a practice, coaches a game, or watches a game, he or she sees something new. The Hockey Coaching Bible gathers many of those observations into one volume that is sure to be useful for coaches, players, parents, and fans of our great sport.”

By Mark G Ryan The Hockey Coaching Bible is a compilation of chapters written about college hockey from some highly prestigious coaches who are experts in the field. Though the book seems to be marketed for coaches at any level, I think it would be a worthwhile read for any hockey parent or spectator who wants to learn more about the game. The early chapters discuss such topics as recruiting practices, team mission, professional responsibility, funding and community support and putting together a new team. They were interesting and informative. However, I really enjoyed the sections which discussed the ideal skills necessary for each position on the team and specific drills, plays and tactics used in practice and competition. As a college hockey season ticket holder, it will increase my ability to understand and appreciate what I am watching. I know some hockey moms who admit to not really knowing the game; this book would certainly help!Lastly, for those of you like me who have been enjoying the game for decades now, interwoven in the chapters is reference to the evolution of the sport as well as developing trends for the future. These brought back happy memories of my youth and made me feel like I had some insider info for the future.

It is based mostly on NCAA hockey. And THAT is the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. If I KNEW it was so much about college hockey before I bought it, I'd give it 5. '

I am not a hockey coach but live in hockey country and know many people involved in the sport. I think this book would be very useful for anyone coaching or attempting to start up a club program (for any sport for that matter, but obviously in particular for hockey)...there are a lot of descriptions of different aspects of the game, as well as aspects of developing your team, team philosophy, etc. As a spectator, I found many of the descriptions of strategies and different playing styles interesting and useful in my understanding of the sport, and there were a lot of neat little tidbits about hockey history as well. My hometown of Austin, MN even gets a nod in the annals of hockey history!I liked that each chapter is written by a different prominent coach, and there is a description of each coach's experience in the back of the book.

Odon L. Bacque Jr. figures his poor eyesight rules him out for the draft, not to mention the fact that he's studying law in college, so the young man doesn't worry too much about the war raging in Vietnam. But when his law school requests he doesn't return, Bacque learns just how wrong he was.

Still convinced his eyesight—or rather the lack of it—disqualifies him from a combat position, he learns once again he’s mistaken. Sent through Officer Candidate School, he winds up assigned to the 5th Special Forces…the Green Berets.

Once in Vietnam, Bacque prepares for the worst—only to have fate finally cut him some slack. Reassigned from an A team back to a B team, he finds himself removed from the front lines and ordered to perform a task better suited to an accounting major, a course he barely passed in college. Still, it beat trying to survive jungle warfare with a serious vision impairment…

A Walk in the Park: A Vietnam Comedy charts Bacque's experiences in Vietnam along with his growing disillusionment with the war's management. Funny without being disrespectful, his story offers a surprisingly comedic look at wartime service.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A fascinating look inside a controversial war By William J. Prudhomme This is a fascinating look inside one of the most controversial engagements in our history called the Vietnam Nam war. However, it is not your typical 'war-time story of just battles and conflicts. Instead, it is a true life story of a young Army officer serving during the Vietnam Nam war and how it affected him from the time he was recruited to his final days of being discharged. There are tragic moments in his story, but most of the escapades are humorous in how he survived the ordeal by his wits, creativity, luck, and esprit de corps.Once I started reading "A Walk in the Park", I couldn't put it down. The author's ability to tell his story with such vivid detail while being humorous at the same time left me laughing out loud at how he managed to dodge the bullet so many times. The reason he is able to remember the details so well is that he wrote letters to his wife every day he was in the Army telling her about the events of each day. She kept all the letters and he used them to tell his story some 40 years later. There is an interesting epilogue at the end where he shares his current views from a perspective of looking back all these years. If you like great stories or need a reason to remember how blessed we are to live in a free country, I highly recommend you read "A Walk in the Park".

Lobb I don't know if it is because I know Odon or because of my service during desert storm, but I found this easy to read book to be addictive and hard to put down.Odon manages to capture the bond formed during military service, provide insight into the ludicrous requests, and tie the "let the good times roll" culture of Louisiana into what seems to be the Special Forces version of MASH. He captures a political undertone on why so many protested and opposed this divisive military event. His story is personal, real, and illustrates the leadership theory of "do, and ask for forgiveness later". Odon's perspective on Vietnam is probably very different than many the Vietnam vets I served with in Desert Storm, this is because he (admittedly) was able to weave his way through a very dangerous environment without ever getting himself into a "combat situation".While I suspect he has made light of many dangerous situations he was in and probably held back on stories which should never be told, I was very much entertained throughout his writings.Well worth the read.

Excerpt from Over the RiverClare, who for seventeen months had been the wife of Sir Gerald Corven of the Colonial of the Colonial Service, stood on the the boat deck of an Orient liner in the River Thames, waiting for it to dock. It was ten o'clock of a mild day in October, but she wore a thick tweed coat, for the voyage had been hot. She looked pale - indeed, a little sallow - but her clear brown eyes were fixed eagerly on the land and her slightly touched-up lips were parted, so that her face had the vividness to which it was accustomed. She stood alone, until a voice said:"Oh! here you arel" and a young man, appearing from behind a boat, stood beside her. Without turning, she said:"Absolutely perfect day! It ought to be lovely at home.""I thought you'd be staying in Town for a night at least; and we could have had a dinner and theatre. Won't you?""My dear young man, I shall be met.""Perfectly damnable, things coming to an end!""Often more damnable, things beginning."He gave her a long look, and said suddenly:"Clare, you realise, of course, that I love you?""She nodded. Yes.""But you don't love me?""Wholly without prejudice.""I wish - I wish you could catch fire for a moment.""I am a respectable married woman, Tony.""Coming back to England because - ""Of the climate of Ceylon."He kicked at the rail.
