Odon L. Bacque Jr. figures his poor eyesight rules him out for the draft, not to mention the fact that he's studying law in college, so the young man doesn't worry too much about the war raging in Vietnam. But when his law school requests he doesn't return, Bacque learns just how wrong he was.

Still convinced his eyesight—or rather the lack of it—disqualifies him from a combat position, he learns once again he’s mistaken. Sent through Officer Candidate School, he winds up assigned to the 5th Special Forces…the Green Berets.

Once in Vietnam, Bacque prepares for the worst—only to have fate finally cut him some slack. Reassigned from an A team back to a B team, he finds himself removed from the front lines and ordered to perform a task better suited to an accounting major, a course he barely passed in college. Still, it beat trying to survive jungle warfare with a serious vision impairment…

A Walk in the Park: A Vietnam Comedy charts Bacque's experiences in Vietnam along with his growing disillusionment with the war's management. Funny without being disrespectful, his story offers a surprisingly comedic look at wartime service.

Prudhomme This is a fascinating look inside one of the most controversial engagements in our history called the Vietnam Nam war. However, it is not your typical 'war-time story of just battles and conflicts. Instead, it is a true life story of a young Army officer serving during the Vietnam Nam war and how it affected him from the time he was recruited to his final days of being discharged. There are tragic moments in his story, but most of the escapades are humorous in how he survived the ordeal by his wits, creativity, luck, and esprit de corps.Once I started reading "A Walk in the Park", I couldn't put it down. The author's ability to tell his story with such vivid detail while being humorous at the same time left me laughing out loud at how he managed to dodge the bullet so many times. The reason he is able to remember the details so well is that he wrote letters to his wife every day he was in the Army telling her about the events of each day. She kept all the letters and he used them to tell his story some 40 years later. There is an interesting epilogue at the end where he shares his current views from a perspective of looking back all these years. If you like great stories or need a reason to remember how blessed we are to live in a free country, I highly recommend you read "A Walk in the Park".

Lobb I don't know if it is because I know Odon or because of my service during desert storm, but I found this easy to read book to be addictive and hard to put down.Odon manages to capture the bond formed during military service, provide insight into the ludicrous requests, and tie the "let the good times roll" culture of Louisiana into what seems to be the Special Forces version of MASH. He captures a political undertone on why so many protested and opposed this divisive military event. His story is personal, real, and illustrates the leadership theory of "do, and ask for forgiveness later". Odon's perspective on Vietnam is probably very different than many the Vietnam vets I served with in Desert Storm, this is because he (admittedly) was able to weave his way through a very dangerous environment without ever getting himself into a "combat situation".While I suspect he has made light of many dangerous situations he was in and probably held back on stories which should never be told, I was very much entertained throughout his writings.Well worth the read.
