Read and Download My Early Life, by Winston Churchill

One of the classic volumes of autobiography, My Early Life is a lively and colourful account of a young man's quest for action, adventure and danger. Churchill's schooldays are undistinguished, but he is admitted to Sandhurst and embarks on a career as a soldier and a war correspondent, seeing action in Cuba, in India, in the Sudan―where he took part in the battle of Omdurman, of which he gives us a stirring account―and finally in South Africa.

Taken prisoner by the Boers, Churchill makes a daring escape. Back home he embarks on the political career that is to make him one of Britain's most distinguished parliamentarians.

First published in 1930, when Churchill's most testing time still lay ahead of him, My Early Life is memorable both as an adventure-story and as an account of the events and influences that helped to shape the career of a great Englishman.

My Early Life, by Winston Churchill

Amazon.com Review The voice of a vanished England speaks from the pages of Winston Churchill's evocative memoir of his first 30 years (1874-1904). The young Churchill inhabits a world in which men fight like hell in meaningless colonial wars--India, Egypt, South Africa--soldiering across the imperial map then extending the hand of friendship to their erstwhile enemy as if they were schoolmates at Harrow. Yet Churchill, born into a privileged family, was not an uncritical supporter of the Victorian status quo. He himself loathed Harrow; an especially amusing chapter skewers the school's emphasis on an irrelevant classical education and rote learning. A firm Tory, he considered himself a friend of the working class, and in 1899 campaigned for parliament with a Socialist colleague. Looking back from his vantage point of 1930, Churchill expresses the most attractive values of the English aristocracy--honor, loyalty, fair play--without giving the impression he wants to live in the past. The book's appeal also stems from its magisterial but colloquial prose. Anyone familiar with recordings of Churchill's rousing speeches during Word War II will hear in their minds' ears that growling timbre and unmistakably patrician accent as they read. Though he would have preferred the peace prize, My Early Life offers good evidence that Churchill's 1953 Nobel for literature was aptly awarded. --Wendy Smith

Review Narrator Frederick Davidson employs a slight Churchillian drawl, making this one of the most completely satisfying programs in years. --Library Journal

From the Back Cover Here, in his own words, are the fascinating first thirty years in the life of one of the most provocative and compelling leaders of the twentieth century - Winston Churchill. As a visionary, statesman, and historian, and the most eloquent spokesman against the Nazi Germany, Winston Churchill was one of the greatest figures of the twentieth century. In this autobiography, Churchill recalls his childhood, his schooling, his years as a war correspondent in South Africa during the Boer War, and his first forays into politics as a member of Parliament. My Early Life not only gives readers insights into the shaping of a great leader but, as Churchill himself wrote, "a picture of a vanished age".

A must read for anyone interested in Churchill By A Customer I interrupted my reading of Manchester's biography of Churchill in order to read this one, hoping to gain a richer understanding of the man. I was not disappointed! It is easy to see why Churchill won the Pulitzer prize for writing. He is indeed a master. The book itself is just plain fun and good reading. But the best part is that you get a real flavor for the true personality of the man himself. He has the ability to make even the very dullest facts interesting, and even adventuresome; whether he is describing a polo match or one of him many "close calls" in war. His amazing writing abilities and style are like a refreshing drink of water compared to many of today's authors.

Enormously entertaining By Amazon Customer Although most of Churchill's huge output of books were written a little too fast (apparently, he had other demands on his time) to endure as classics, in this very personal story of his boyhood and youth his prose is superb. Further, he follows the brilliant strategy of looking back on his younger years with the wisdom of age. He describes the events of his childhood with exactly the same boyish emotions he felt at the time. His account of his struggles with schooling remain justly famous, and there's adventure aplenty in Afghanistan, Cuba, the Sudan, and South Africa. A great book for boys (or former boys), especially ones with large vocabularies. --- Steve Sailer

I expected the familiar story of our greatest leader's early life, I expected an insightful account of Britain in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, I expected a stirring tale of a young man who was a practical adventurer just as much as politician and author. I didn't expect to laugh out loud regularly for much of the story. If you've seen the film "Young Winston", based on this book, you will be familiar with some of the events. Other programmes and books have adequately explained his war leadership and his contribution to many serious political issues. However, the films and documentaries I have seen fail to capture the mischievous spirit communicated through this book. This a fascinating study of a bygone age, when Britain maintained a great empire, when most politicians took the title Lord, and when politics and army officership were sports for those of independent means. Interestingly despite his aristocratic bloodline Churchill's family was not particularly wealthy and some of the most poignant lessons stem from this.Sometimes the sentiments in the book appear bloodthirsty or imperialistic, but you have to realise that at least part of the time Churchill is writing satirically, reflecting common values which you suspect he did not always share himself. When he is sincerely expressing his own serious ideals it is usually easy to detect. These beliefs link both his skilful analysis of historical events, and Churchill's account of his own development. For example he explains the British government's failure to be magnanimous after the early victories of the Boer war as the reason that a relatively fast-moving and honourable conflict descended into "shocking evils" on both sides. The same failing is shown as a prime force in the leftward drift of Churchill's own politics.Churchill was a great writer, but it's instructive to learn that his facility with English developed largely because he was judged early on to be too dim to cope with Latin and Greek. The classics loss was our gain, the legacy including both Churchill's great deeds and great writing. The last chapter is slightly disappointing, with Churchill's early parliamentary career an anticlimax, and the story stops rather than ending on a major event. That apart, the pace, interest and humour are consistent throughout. This book was written in 1930, when Churchill was already 56, but in the "wilderness years" before he regained high office and led Britain through the Second World War. It is interesting to speculate whether the book would have been very different if it were written either much earlier or later. If you want adventure, read this book. If you want to understand a great man, read this book. If you want to do both and have a good laugh, read this book.

Linda Chapman’s life story is one of a fruitless search for love in her own family … a family where abuse, not love, became her ‘normal’. Given away at birth by her mother, Linda lived a perfect life with grand-parents who showered her with affection. Then suddenly, at the age of five, she was kidnapped by her own mother and thrown into a world of physical and mental abuse that followed her through much of her adult life. “This book has changed my life …. I look at families in a different way, realizing full-well that the idyllic childhood I had is not the same as many children lead. Unfortunately, there are too many Lindas in the world, many of them living next door or just down the street from us.” —Donna Bailey, Artist

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Beyond the Eyes of God By Cee This is a very well written book about a subject that I'm sure was difficult for the author to write about. The title is a bit misleading. but it is fitting as it is a biography of a woman that was mistreated in the worst way, starting as a young child and continued through adulthood. However, she shows that there is light at the end of the tunnel and could be an inspiration to abused children and adults as well. I highly recommend this book.

I couldn't put it down and I *HATE* saying that because this was the life of a good friends mother. It will put so much into perspective in your life. Will teach you not to judge someone, no matter how well put together they may seem.... that's just the surface.I am so sorry you went through what you did, but I am glad you put it out there for everyone to read, you are such a strong woman. May you be blessed everyday the rest of your life.

I wish the book was 300-350 pages in total. But all in all a very enjoyable read as always.

I was less than impressed with The Pact, but I wanted to give this book a chance because a romance about a single mom in her thirties sounded interesting. There aren’t nearly enough good love stories featuring characters thirty and older. Plus, the cover looks really cool. Sadly, I’m more enthusiastic about the cover than I am about the actual book. It really is so very pretty. We were introduced to Nicola Price and Bram McGregor in The Pact. Nicola is Stephanie’s best friend and Bram is Linden’s brother. Nicola is raising her five-year-old daughter, Ava, alone after her baby daddy decided he couldn’t handle being a father anymore. Bram is known for being a carefree Scottish manwhore. He’s T-r-o-u-b-l-e. He tries to hook up with Nicola at Stephanie and Linden’s wedding but when she tells him she has to get home to her daughter he happily finds someone else to shag… in the bushes… which Nicola sees. Ouch. Now Nicola wants nothing to do with Bram and she makes no effort to hide her disdain for him whenever they are around each other. Bram sees her as a challenge to be conquered.Nicola is already struggling to make ends meet when she’s fired from her job. Circumstances become even more dire and Bram offers to let Nicola and Ava move into the apartment complex he owns. And here began my exercise in frustration. Nicola has no job, she can barely pay the rent in her crappy one bedroom ghetto apartment, and she has a child to support. Yet when Bram says she can stay in a two bedroom apartment in a nice part of town rent-free until she can find a job, she says she has to “think about it”? What the hell?! She has a friend who owns a bar but she doesn’t want to ask him for a job because she’s too proud. Nicola also has a father who can help her financially but she refuses to ask for his assistance. Why? You guessed it. She’s too proud. I am a mom. I may be too proud to ask for help for myself but there is nothing I wouldn’t do for my kids, including swallowing my pride to ask a parent for help. When she decides to move into Bram’s vacant apartment, she’s barely gracious. She seems almost resentful of his generosity. I simply could not relate to this woman. As for Bram, he makes this grand charitable gesture but spends most of the time being intentionally lewd and baiting Nicola at every turn. I couldn’t figure out where he was coming from and I wasn’t feeling the chemistry between the two of them. The writing didn’t help turn up the sexual heat.“I grab her roughly and with a grunt, flip her over my shoulder, like a caveman would, like a hunter would bring home a meal, and take her into the bedroom where I throw her on the bed.”Is this Animal Planet? Somehow Bram wins over the prickly Nicola but at times I still felt like he suffered from multiple personality disorder. He could be so sweet one moment and an arrogant ass the next.Did anything work? Well, when they finally get their act together the story is kind of sweet. I liked the little family memories they create. The Ikea story is freaking hilarious! While I never did care for Nicola I did eventually warm to Bram. My favorite character though, hands down, is Ava. That little girl stole my heart. The basic structure for most romance novels is the same: boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy wins girl back, and they both live happily ever after. So I’m not spoiling anything when I say that I was just waiting for Bram to screw up. The unexpected plot twist was a nice touch; however, the easy way in which the conflict was resolved in a single chapter was unsatisfying. Like wanting a four-course dinner and getting some tapas instead. Maybe it’s because I remember having my own heart broken but I like seeing a hero really have to grovel to get his woman back.If you liked The Pact then you will probably enjoy this book. If you didn’t then you aren’t missing much by passing on it – just take a moment to admire the pretty cover.

23 of 28 people found the following review helpful. Passionate, intense, steamy & simply Bramtastic! By Valley of the Book Doll I never thought I could love another McGregor more than Linden, but The Offer has proven me wrong. Bram McGregor has my heart in the palm of his huge, Scottish hand.Bram McGregor is infamous for his playboy ways and rugged good looks. He’s never bothered to correct people because he simply sees no point in wasting away precious energy. Hiding who he truly is from everyone including his brother, Linden, has him bottling up every thought, emotion, and detail of his life. That all begins to change when a certain woman makes an impression on him one night at his brother’s wedding.Nicola Price has had to transition from a cushiony lifestyle to one one that’s a bit subpar. After her boyfriend/baby daddy left her and their daughter, Ava, it’s been her and Ava against the world. Suddenly finding herself in need of serious financial help leads her to form a new relationship with the brother of her best friend’s husband.Getting Nicola to accept Bram’s help is a full-time job, but his determination is at an all time high. Eventually Nicola solidifies her motto of “live with no regrets” by giving in to her desires and listening to her heart once again. Breaking down the cage she’s built around herself piece by piece and letting Bram in day by day.But becoming completely vulnerable to another person is never that simple. Bram also fears showing all of himself to Nicola, and in the end, that may very well be their downfall.*************The sexual tension was through the roof in this book and once they finally meshed into one, Bram and Nicola created magic. No doubt some scenes had me blushing, others had me laughing out loud, and plenty had me fanning myself. Thanks to Bram, I won’t be able to step into another IKEA without thinking of this book. What I liked about the way the sex scenes were written in this book, was the intricacy of weaving dirty and romantic aspects into one. Yes, they had hot and dirty sex, but at the same time, the passion and intimacy showed through. It’s obvious that Bram and Nicola never once had “just sex”.I think that all boils down to the chemistry these two individuals had. Nicola is independent and headstrong. Being a single mother barely making ends meet, there’s really no other way to be. Merely accepting Bram into her life as nothing more than an acquaintance is hard enough, but bringing him into her and her daughter's life further than that is certainly no easy feat.Bram’s past and steady reputation is something he can’t shake. Incidentally, this factor is the main reason as to why Nicola is so hesitant to give in to his kindness and charm in any way. Bram sees Nicola’s stubbornness and raises his persistence. He never gave up trying to get her to see the real him.For that reason, I fell head over heels for that Scottish hunk. Add on the fact that he exudes charm, and is ridiculously good-looking—oh oh oh, and how about the way he treats and interacts with Ava so well…*sigh*Nicola is sassy, strong, and knows exactly how to keep up with Bram. Two of the best well-written characters/couples I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading about! The Offer is a passionate and intense story about a single mom finding the strength to open her heart and let down her walls, and a kindhearted man with a messy past trying to reform his rep. It’s jam-packed with angst, steam and comedy, and it comes with a book boyfriend guarantee! ;)

New Adult angsty drama By Avid Reader Okay, I've tried Ms. Halle's paranormal stuff and they just did not agree with me (and believe me, I've tried numerous times, thinking "oh, look at all these great reviews! I must have been having a bad day when I tried that book, let's try it again." Each attempt at trying to like her paranormal stories FAILED). Anyway, I thought, well, this is a new setting - it's contemporary romance (I love that), it's about an older woman with a child (I like that - especially since I REALLY dislike the new genre of New Adult angsty bull-cr@p), the hero sounds like an alpha male (thumbs up)....okay, all the qualities that I like in a book. The "inside look" was pretty good. So I went ahead and bought the book to be read on my beach vacation. Well, this book went the way of the paranormal series. What didn't work for me? I didn't like how the main hero suddenly transitioned so quickly from a doucheb@g to a thoughtful helpful non-alpha. The first few chapters show him as a man-whore for crying out loud (with details about sex with other women) and then suddenly he's all over this woman....because he pities her? Wait, whaaa? How is there an attraction with that?! And the heroine's over-the-top drama about her daughter's diabetes. The heroine has supposedly dealt really gracefully with a lot of junk in her life. So, when she starts to fall apart over her daughter getting a treatable illness - that's just kind of strange when juxtaposed with her experience. Overall, this ended up being a New Adult angsty over the top drama read that I truly disliked. If those are things you like in a romance novel, this book will absolutely do it for you.

Tess Dyer’s husband, Jason, promised to love her forever. That was eleven years ago, before the fights, before the pain, before the bitter divorce. Now he is just another in a long line of people who rejected Tess, from her coldly distant mother to the seemingly endless string of one-night stands from her youth whose names she can’t remember.

Desperate to escape the pain of the past, Tess flees her small Maine hometown of Brookfield for the even smaller New Mills. There, she hopes to start over and forget what she left behind…with the help, perhaps, of her handsome new neighbor, Brian. He is drawn to Tess’s quirky, outspoken nature, and to the beauty he sees in her haunting paintings. She tells herself he is just a warm young body to help mask the pain, though his kindness and his affection for his troubled sister are having quite an effect on her bruised heart.

But the fear of losing his love is always there, and when a man from her past unexpectedly shows up, Tess’s personal demons threaten to destroy the fragile happiness she has found with Brian. Ultimately, she must make a choice: continue wandering through life, drifting and numb, or confront the cruel realities of her past once and for all and finally start living.

That didn't happen at all throughout the book. The story line flowed beautifully and horrifically at the same time.Reading this book brought to mind the old movie "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore." Not that the storyline was similar, just that the tone flowed in the same manner. The sex scenes were a bit long and drawn out. Many of them did not even seem to be essential to the story, at least not in the detail they were delivered.Character Development: 5 StarsEvery character was real - You could be living next door to any one of them. The main character reaches out of the pages and squeezes your heart. Her honesty and realism are refreshing. The mother is evil in ways that only a mother can be; while the father is the only type of man who could be with a woman like her.You will fall in love with Brian. I promise.Writing Style: 4 1/2 StarsAs good as the writing was, about 20% of this novel could have been left in the Recycling bin of the author's computer. There were several passages where it just 'rambled on' repetitively, driving home the same points until emotional numbness. The usage of caps to try to bring attention to certain words was a bit annoying. I think the work would have been better served by using either italics or nothing. Using caps actually detracted a little from the power of the words as I felt like I was being force-fed.Editing/Formatting: 5 StarsThere were a few errors in the text, but not so many as to overly detract from the reading experience, especially in a book of this length. The Kindle formatting was excellent.Overall:This was a soap opera "plot" told in poetic prose. It is an epic work from an author destined for greatness.Rating: NC-17 for Adult Situations, Language and Graphic Sex

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Witty, realistic, emotional roller-coaster. By K. Crumley One of the things I like most about WAITING FOR SPRING is the prose. RJ Keller's wit adds to the story, making Tess more fleshed out and real. Tess is far from perfect, but she is likeable! She's everywoman, a welcome change from Miss Mary Sue who pops in and out of most novels every so often. We can relate to Tess, and all of her trails and tribulations. The other thing I liked was how two different love stories kind of merged--as Tess' marriage fell apart, she deals with the heartbreak. Then in its wake, she meets Brian the young, handsome guy downstairs. The chemistry between Tess and Brian is brilliant, real, and at times dramatic. It was a real page turner, and emotional roller-coaster...you feel right along with Tess. All her highs and lows, moments of joy and valleys of pain and shame. You really root for her, and you want it to all work out in the end for Tess.I highly recommend Waiting For Spring, as well as anything else by RJ Keller.

31 of 37 people found the following review helpful. Promising writer; flawed book By Scamp There is much to like and appreciate about Waiting for Spring. Keller is a talented writer who has created a believable world with a cast of well-drawn characters, most notably the protagonist, Tess, and her love interest, Brian. Some of the ancillary characters are less three-dimensional, particularly the well-to-do, who are almost without exception stereotypically typed as fairly greedy and shallow. In fact, money and Tess's perception of it as evil is an ongoing thread in the novel. This appeared to be presented as a principled stance for Tess, but the 'principle' didn't quite resonate and the reasons for it were not entirely clear to me.This book has great potential, but the excellent world Keller has created does not shine as brightly as it should, and the occasional poignant turn of phrase gets lost in the muddle. The main problem is that, in my opinion, Waiting for Spring is overwritten, so much so that it was a struggle for me to see it through to the end. I believe a good one-third of this book could be eliminated, perhaps even more. Repetition of thoughts, ideas, and impressions in Tess's internal monologue, along with some repetitive physical descriptions (i.e. "Van Dyke Brown"), give the novel a rambling, unfocused quality at times. There were a few graphic sex scenes in the book. As I came to know Tess better, I began to understand the reason for Keller's inclusion of them. Sex is, after all, Tess's default fallback coping strategy; and this is Tess's world, seen through her eyes (first-person narration). But like all else in the novel, including the excess use of four-letter words, less trumps more. The ending was a disappointment. It felt tacked on, like an afterthought, and it seemed out of sync with the flow of the book. I cannot really say more without spoilers.I can recommend this book for enthusiasts of women's fiction because of its wonderful cast of human, believable characters in an equally believable world. I hesitate to give an unqualified recommendation because I think the overwriting does necessitate a certain amount of patience that some readers may not have.

Falling deathly ill in his New Jersey home in 1990, it was highly unlikely that six year-old Christophe Lafontant would even live to see his seventh birthday. Although left completely perplexed as to the cause of this mysterious illness, doctors still did everything in their power to keep him alive. Christophe survived a pacemaker implantation, two heart transplants, diabetes, dialysis treatment, a kidney transplant, a tracheostomy, and other life altering procedures. Desperate to attain a life of "normalcy", Christophe spent his whole life trying to conceal his illness and true identity from those around him. Instead, he chose to live in a world of disillusioned perfection until one day uncovering a deep-seated family betrayal. It wasn't long, however, before those painfully dark emotions he tried so hard to bury would catch up with him, causing him to sink deeper into an already existing drug addiction. Although he consistently defied the odds medically, he was slowly dying emotionally. 1 Man, 3 Hearts, and still ALIVE.

Nice reminder that life is what you make it-so enjoy simple happinesses and celebrate victories. Even the small ones. Because there's always something to smile about. Nice fast paced easy book to read. I recommend it for anyone struggling with both physical and emotional limitations.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. how easily we are able to function and do things By Amazon Customer Once in a blue moon, someone comes into your life and makes you see the TRUE beauty of it. What you are blessed with, things we take for granted on a daily basis, how easily we are able to function and do things, and the fact that every morning God allows us to wake up again. I'm able to strive for what I want, to provide for my growing family (that in itself is a blessing), and not to limit myself in anything that the universe throws my way. We become lazy with the simplest tasks, when we should be thankful that we are able to complete them if we just put one foot in front of the other. We complain about our feet hurting, but are still able to walk. We complain about our backs hurting, but are still able to bend down to tie our shoes. We complain about our legs hurting, but we can still climb to the top of Bear Mountain, just for a glimpse of the beauty of nature that the man upstairs created. Don't take anything for granted, it's not in our hands when it can be so easily taken away. Chris Tophe.. Thank you. From the bottom of my heart, with everything I have, thank you. I have never in my life met someone so inspirational. You have the most genuine and honest soul there could ever be in a person, and you make me want to be better. "Je t'aime." ❤️

This book took me deeper into his life than I ever thought possible. His willingness to share it all for the ultimate purpose of helping others is not only commendable, but also inspiring.Christophe takes you on a detailed adventure of his life story which keeps you wanting to know more. His story is truly unique and a must read for everyone. You would think his having a rare disease would be interesting enough to write a book, but he gives you more than expected with his extrodinary life. I don't want to give away any of the shocking details because the element of surprise and wonder is part of the experience of this wonderful book!

Immigrating Tears chronicles a coming of age story of a life journey, set in motion at the confluence of the unlikeliest of events, from upbringing in abject poverty and subsistence survival in sub-Saharan Africa to the experience of navigating educational and cultural terrains of schooling and new life in Europe and America. Along the way, the reader is presented with engaging insights and deep and poignant reflections on the immigrant experience and the stories that are carried along from the perspective of an astute observer. The story line is anchored in the author's journey of embracing running from a meager initial interest to the quest for and achieving the goal of completing a sub-four hour marathon. Combining contrasting style of brutally honest and heartbreaking narrative of struggle with restrained prose, F.C. Blake leaves the reader with a transfixing portrait of a dreamy teenager's upbringing, education, travels, and survival through varying geographies, cultures, and circumstances. In looking back to the past, and connecting it to the present, he walks fluidly in time while reflecting intimately on the themes of identity, family, running, dancing, love, life challenges, triumphs, and salvation. Immigrating Tears speaks for all those that anchor to places only to leave them behind physically, but carry their impact, good and bad, forever on the journey forward. It is also about those seekers who wander in this world to find their footing and feel they belong everywhere yet fit nowhere. Above all, F.C. Blake presents us with a gripping story of the indomitable thirst and will for extending beyond the darkness of the past and present, and reaching for and running to destiny in a quest for survival and self-determination. Masterful storytelling meets fearless honesty to give us a captivating view of the cost and consequence of such life; and, in reaching for the future, what is lost of the past and self, as well as the richness of and redemption in a full life.

Stories of leaving family behind, stories of challenges and opportunities, successes and failures, stories of how their and their family’s lives have been shaped by their experiences. Irrespective of the color on their skin or the corner of the world they come from, they tell beautiful stories. Immigrating Tears is such a beautiful story. Elegantly and eloquently written that will resonate with many!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. 032 Blake's crocodile tears By Asko Korpela I only ask myself whether it is too cruel to hint to crocodile tears in this connection but having finished the book I had the odd feeling that the author withholds something pertinent, but what? Would it be that he never mentions his real origin by name as if shamed of it.But in many respects this is a very remarkable text. Not least because its fluent narration and rich language. It is not just choice of words, that too, but also the scenery awaking from his colorful expressions and erudite references. I really liked his English and did not mind having several times to refer to dictionary being a nonnative speaker myself. All to my own upbringing, one of the main purposes of reading in general. It is one of the best features of ebooks that dictionaries are available by one click. Only should the word definitions remain in the readers Notes & Markings file in addition to his faible memory (and the markings file be downloadable as a lasting souvenir of the book in question). However, having read some twenty first pages I had a slight feeling of disappointment. Now almost regretting for having summed the first reading lot as 'dull', quite too harsh and quite too soon a judgment, as it soon turned out. Next time I could not finish but devoured some fifty pages finding it everything else but dull.I had chosen the book by hints to running, especially marathon running. I had just read another Amazon book on marathon running, What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami. And quite correct, the passages of running really, literally, offer colorful scenery as he describes his routes in training and competition. But here was also my worst disappointment, although that too, unfounded. Actually not unfounded, but completely wrong-minded, just wrong-minded, not ill-minded. I was disappointed with Blake's level as runner, an hour slower marathon than mine. But the essence of marathon is not time but the run itself. The real accomplishment is finishing it. In a way a four hour marathon is a bigger accomplishment than a three hour marathon. Four hours of continuous sincere effort and pain is something definitely more than only three hours of the same. Big hail to Blake, the marathoner! Suggest first name acquaintance in runners' club.Another reason for fascination throughout the book was a certain similarity of his career with mine. From primitive circumstances to doctor's degree. He even mentions about the secret of trees flourishing around his first home. I could tell something similar, although there is a tremendous difference in climate conditions. My harsh winters compelling to much more severe attitudes to the prime necessities of life for survival. Then there is his teen age education away from home in strange surroundings in Italy. I also had to leave my home early, at the age of twelve, to go to school. Although not very far, away from home, anyway. Much later on I had my experiences of Italy and Italian language. The more nice a surprise was it to find a paragraph where the author list the most memorable impressions of his trips in Italy outside his site of education. I could write, or better still, almost cite this paragraph as a list of my experiences in Italy. A real nice coincidence of life.Further reasons of community feeling with the author through the book, which is my habit of seeking in all reading, is in economics. In my case it is the core of my whole career being a professional economist and having written several economics books. From his mentioning of economic events and terminology it is easy to see that he has had excellent success in his courses of economics, although economics not being directly his main career. Sticking to personal impressions, he tells a lot of his attraction to music and dancing. As sportsman, dancing was also my hobby during years of teenage, but later only occasionally. His liking of music, on the contrary, has nothing to do with my very narrow taste of listening 24/7 barock of 1600-1750.All in all, a very entertaining and in many respects worth while reading these Immigration Tears, A Story of Survival and Running to Destiny by F.C. Blake, well deserving my four stars, if not quite five because of the lack of a real big sting.

For many years before we began to hear about the threats that Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) weapons pose a serious and growing threat to our national security, I used to tell my husband that if anyone wanted to send us back to the stone age, all they would have to do is destroy our electrical supply because every aspect of our lives was so dependent upon it. And that was before computers and cell phones became so much a part of our lives.“Into Autumn” does not mention EMP’s—but the power grid has gone down and along with it all internet and cell contact. The only thing that still seems to work is the ham radio network, and that is for the few who have them. The first sign of disaster was the spiralling downward plunge of the stock market which sends shock waves throughout the country. (Today, as I write this, the stock market has dropped precipitously over the past 3 days and I must admit I have thought about Landgraf’s story!)Eileen Branson works in the stock exchange. At first, she is puzzled, then stunned and frightened. As she watches the news on TV she realises that fear is turning into chaos in the cities and she makes the decision to pack a few belongings and prepare to leave early the next morning. She rushes out to get some cash but doesn’t think to fill up her car's gas tank. Panicked by the sound of shots in her neighbourhood, she hurry’s home and hides out in her house with no lights on to draw attention to it. Early the next morning she leaves the city and heads out, not knowing where she is headed but knowing that she will surely die if she doesn’t get away from the city. She is unarmed, has a limited amount of food, a limited amount of water and a gas tank that is not full. She embarks on a journey that I am pretty certain I could not have survived. I could imagine the fear, the anxiety, the uncertainty and the desperation she felt after her car stopped and she walked down a road in a forest, having no idea where it would take her or if she would survive.Lars Lindgren had chosen to live life off the grid a few years earlier, so is fairly well equipped to deal the circumstances when society falls apart. He has solar panels that provide a limited amount of power. He grows enough vegetables to feed himself, he hunts for his meat and trades with the few neighbours who are in the neighbourhood. His is a good shot and he is well aware of the dangers of intruders. In fact when he discovers a ragged, starving Eileen at the side of his house, she was very fortunate that he didn’t shoot her there and then.Into Autumn is an interesting look into what life would become like if infrastructure that keeps our world working failed. No money, no government, no food, no fuel for vehicles, those who have guns would inevitably maraud and kill the helpless to take the little that they have. Civilized humans would quickly revert to savage animals in the quest for food and shelter.I believe this book is a pretty realistic portrayal of what life would become if you had the “will” to survive in those circumstances. Everyone would have to pull their weight, neighbours would either band together in support of each other for protection and the comfort of human company—or they would kill each other and the survivors would take the spoils. Hard choices would have to be made, and some of them would totally go against what a person’s moral beliefs, yet to survive they would commit to the choice. Invariably loved ones would die and the survivors would pull themselves together and face the days ahead. There are many other elements to this book. This isn’t an end of the world story, but it is a portrayal of the collapse of society. There is a love story or two and yes there is the human element of sexual relationships—sometimes pretty steamy. There is loyal friendship, struggle, hard work, celebration and sharing of goods to provide food and safety. When I finished reading the book I felt certain that Landgraf was a “Survivalist” so I looked up his bio. I didn’t find anything that might link him to the groups that we hear about, but he produced a great story! My husband is pretty picky about what he reads, but I have told him that I think he would enjoy “Into Autumn, “ and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a book that has action, adventure, murder and mayhem interwoven with the ordinary aspects of life.

Mason First, I want to say I was given a free copy in exchange for an unbiased review of this book.Second, my rating of books is different of everyone else. This book is very long and took me at least a week with several hours a day to finish. When I read, I immerse myself into the story, and this was no exception. This type of story fit into the one of the genres that is my favorite. Without giving anything away, it seems as if the author has some personal experience which influenced the main character. There are so many questions I asked myself as the story progressed. Are the characters based off people he knows? I do like how two characters grow and change throughout the story. He doesn't hold back as many authors do in both ends of the emotional spectrum. One of my favorite authors, Stephen King, is whom I compare most authors with. By the end of this story, I wished there had been more to follow; a continuation if you will. There are some redundancies and overuse of words throughout, however I've found no grammatical errors. I've read books that were so bad I couldn't finish them. The small issues did not affect the story such that I would stop reading and have a negative thought of the author. Maybe.....that is the way that he writes.Given that and since Amazon cannot let me, I give it a 3.5 Star Rating.

The story is about a group of people that somehow survive in the USA after the stock market fails. Widespread looting and total collapse of the infrastructure occurs. Only survivalists who predicted that armageddon would someday happen are able to make do for themselves. The rest of the story is a tedious description of everyday life in a world without modern conveniences. One of the families' male member is so well stocked with mres and loads of guns and ammunition and a variety of combat equipment that he and his neighbors are able to use to thwart any intruders. I kept waiting for some real action scenes of heroic feats but it never happened. I guess if you want to read about someone peeing in the woods or peeling potatoes and carrots for a meal, this is a must read for you.

Exploration of an Extraordinary Life By Ralph Stevens My Life, My Letters & My Loves by Alida Henrietta Struze is comprised of sixty-five Christmas letters (one each year since 1950). Each letter describes the events and life of the author in vivid detail from 1950-2014. She describes what happens in her life similar to a year in review. She talks about her family and friends, with a warm felt affection toward all those that touched her heart during the year. Alida affectionately describes her relationship with her Mother, Father, Aunt Pinkie, her Brother Walt and other family members. Each year is a walk down memory lane describing Cleveland, and especially her home in Lakewood, Ohio. She talks about her employment at the Federal Reserve Bank and The Legal Aid Society, the latter she was employed with until she was eighty-eight. She helped those individuals who couldn't afford it to find attorneys to take Pro Bono Cases. Because of her dedication and hard work many of her clients stayed in touch throughout the years, She formed a tight bond with the attorneys that helped her provide a more enriching life for those people who were in need. Her letters portrays a picture of the many memories that she experienced throughout the years. In addition to family, she describes her active participation in the the Church that remains so very important in her life. The last twelve chapters in this book deals with those events that were meaningful in the author's life. There are many unsung heroes in the world today, most don't receive the publicity that others come by and, in my opinion, Miss Struze exemplifies one of those people. I enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it to anyone searching for a meaning to their lives.
