I was less than impressed with The Pact, but I wanted to give this book a chance because a romance about a single mom in her thirties sounded interesting. There aren’t nearly enough good love stories featuring characters thirty and older. Plus, the cover looks really cool. Sadly, I’m more enthusiastic about the cover than I am about the actual book. It really is so very pretty. We were introduced to Nicola Price and Bram McGregor in The Pact. Nicola is Stephanie’s best friend and Bram is Linden’s brother. Nicola is raising her five-year-old daughter, Ava, alone after her baby daddy decided he couldn’t handle being a father anymore. Bram is known for being a carefree Scottish manwhore. He’s T-r-o-u-b-l-e. He tries to hook up with Nicola at Stephanie and Linden’s wedding but when she tells him she has to get home to her daughter he happily finds someone else to shag… in the bushes… which Nicola sees. Ouch. Now Nicola wants nothing to do with Bram and she makes no effort to hide her disdain for him whenever they are around each other. Bram sees her as a challenge to be conquered.Nicola is already struggling to make ends meet when she’s fired from her job. Circumstances become even more dire and Bram offers to let Nicola and Ava move into the apartment complex he owns. And here began my exercise in frustration. Nicola has no job, she can barely pay the rent in her crappy one bedroom ghetto apartment, and she has a child to support. Yet when Bram says she can stay in a two bedroom apartment in a nice part of town rent-free until she can find a job, she says she has to “think about it”? What the hell?! She has a friend who owns a bar but she doesn’t want to ask him for a job because she’s too proud. Nicola also has a father who can help her financially but she refuses to ask for his assistance. Why? You guessed it. She’s too proud. I am a mom. I may be too proud to ask for help for myself but there is nothing I wouldn’t do for my kids, including swallowing my pride to ask a parent for help. When she decides to move into Bram’s vacant apartment, she’s barely gracious. She seems almost resentful of his generosity. I simply could not relate to this woman. As for Bram, he makes this grand charitable gesture but spends most of the time being intentionally lewd and baiting Nicola at every turn. I couldn’t figure out where he was coming from and I wasn’t feeling the chemistry between the two of them. The writing didn’t help turn up the sexual heat.“I grab her roughly and with a grunt, flip her over my shoulder, like a caveman would, like a hunter would bring home a meal, and take her into the bedroom where I throw her on the bed.”Is this Animal Planet? Somehow Bram wins over the prickly Nicola but at times I still felt like he suffered from multiple personality disorder. He could be so sweet one moment and an arrogant ass the next.Did anything work? Well, when they finally get their act together the story is kind of sweet. I liked the little family memories they create. The Ikea story is freaking hilarious! While I never did care for Nicola I did eventually warm to Bram. My favorite character though, hands down, is Ava. That little girl stole my heart. The basic structure for most romance novels is the same: boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy wins girl back, and they both live happily ever after. So I’m not spoiling anything when I say that I was just waiting for Bram to screw up. The unexpected plot twist was a nice touch; however, the easy way in which the conflict was resolved in a single chapter was unsatisfying. Like wanting a four-course dinner and getting some tapas instead. Maybe it’s because I remember having my own heart broken but I like seeing a hero really have to grovel to get his woman back.If you liked The Pact then you will probably enjoy this book. If you didn’t then you aren’t missing much by passing on it – just take a moment to admire the pretty cover.

By Valley of the Book Doll I never thought I could love another McGregor more than Linden, but The Offer has proven me wrong. Bram McGregor has my heart in the palm of his huge, Scottish hand.Bram McGregor is infamous for his playboy ways and rugged good looks. He’s never bothered to correct people because he simply sees no point in wasting away precious energy. Hiding who he truly is from everyone including his brother, Linden, has him bottling up every thought, emotion, and detail of his life. That all begins to change when a certain woman makes an impression on him one night at his brother’s wedding.Nicola Price has had to transition from a cushiony lifestyle to one one that’s a bit subpar. After her boyfriend/baby daddy left her and their daughter, Ava, it’s been her and Ava against the world. Suddenly finding herself in need of serious financial help leads her to form a new relationship with the brother of her best friend’s husband.Getting Nicola to accept Bram’s help is a full-time job, but his determination is at an all time high. Eventually Nicola solidifies her motto of “live with no regrets” by giving in to her desires and listening to her heart once again. Breaking down the cage she’s built around herself piece by piece and letting Bram in day by day.But becoming completely vulnerable to another person is never that simple. Bram also fears showing all of himself to Nicola, and in the end, that may very well be their downfall.*************The sexual tension was through the roof in this book and once they finally meshed into one, Bram and Nicola created magic. No doubt some scenes had me blushing, others had me laughing out loud, and plenty had me fanning myself. Thanks to Bram, I won’t be able to step into another IKEA without thinking of this book. What I liked about the way the sex scenes were written in this book, was the intricacy of weaving dirty and romantic aspects into one. Yes, they had hot and dirty sex, but at the same time, the passion and intimacy showed through. It’s obvious that Bram and Nicola never once had “just sex”.I think that all boils down to the chemistry these two individuals had. Nicola is independent and headstrong. Being a single mother barely making ends meet, there’s really no other way to be. Merely accepting Bram into her life as nothing more than an acquaintance is hard enough, but bringing him into her and her daughter's life further than that is certainly no easy feat.Bram’s past and steady reputation is something he can’t shake. Incidentally, this factor is the main reason as to why Nicola is so hesitant to give in to his kindness and charm in any way. Bram sees Nicola’s stubbornness and raises his persistence. He never gave up trying to get her to see the real him.For that reason, I fell head over heels for that Scottish hunk. Add on the fact that he exudes charm, and is ridiculously good-looking—oh oh oh, and how about the way he treats and interacts with Ava so well…*sigh*Nicola is sassy, strong, and knows exactly how to keep up with Bram. Two of the best well-written characters/couples I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading about! The Offer is a passionate and intense story about a single mom finding the strength to open her heart and let down her walls, and a kindhearted man with a messy past trying to reform his rep. It’s jam-packed with angst, steam and comedy, and it comes with a book boyfriend guarantee! ;)

New Adult angsty drama By Avid Reader Okay, I've tried Ms. Halle's paranormal stuff and they just did not agree with me (and believe me, I've tried numerous times, thinking "oh, look at all these great reviews! I must have been having a bad day when I tried that book, let's try it again." Each attempt at trying to like her paranormal stories FAILED). Anyway, I thought, well, this is a new setting - it's contemporary romance (I love that), it's about an older woman with a child (I like that - especially since I REALLY dislike the new genre of New Adult angsty bull-cr@p), the hero sounds like an alpha male (thumbs up)....okay, all the qualities that I like in a book. The "inside look" was pretty good. So I went ahead and bought the book to be read on my beach vacation. Well, this book went the way of the paranormal series. What didn't work for me? I didn't like how the main hero suddenly transitioned so quickly from a doucheb@g to a thoughtful helpful non-alpha. The first few chapters show him as a man-whore for crying out loud (with details about sex with other women) and then suddenly he's all over this woman....because he pities her? Wait, whaaa? How is there an attraction with that?! And the heroine's over-the-top drama about her daughter's diabetes. The heroine has supposedly dealt really gracefully with a lot of junk in her life. So, when she starts to fall apart over her daughter getting a treatable illness - that's just kind of strange when juxtaposed with her experience. Overall, this ended up being a New Adult angsty over the top drama read that I truly disliked. If those are things you like in a romance novel, this book will absolutely do it for you.
