Excerpt from The Marrow of Tradition"Stay here beside her, major. I shall not be needed for an hour yet. Meanwhile I'11 go downstairs and snatch a bit of sleep, or talk to old Jane."The night was hot and sultry. Though the windows of the chamber were wide open, and the muslin curtains looped back, not a breath of air was stirring. Only the shrill chirp of the cicada and the muffled croaking of the frogs in some distant marsh broke the night silence. The heavy scent of magnolias, overpowering even the strong smell of drugs in the sickroom, suggested death and funeral wreaths, sorrow and tears, the long home, the last sleep. The major shivered with apprehension as the slender hand which he held in his own contracted nervously and in a spasm of pain clutched his fingers with a viselike grip.Major Carteret, though dressed in brown linen, had thrown off his coat for greater comfort. The stifling heat, in spite of the palm-leaf fan which he plied mechanically, was scarcely less oppressive than his own thoughts.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Marrow of Tradition (Classic Reprint), by Charles W. Chesnutt

From Library Journal Based upon the Wilmington, NC, race riot of 1898 and written in 1901, this historical novel makes a plea for racial justice. A group of powerful white men continue to run the fictional town of Wellington and their households as though the Civil War had never occurred. Complicating matters even further, Olivia Carteret, wife of the white newspaper editor, discovers she and Janet Miller, wife of the town's black doctor, have the same father. As the town's residents battle their way through the social and racial issues resulting from the war, Olivia and Janet work their way through racial, social, and family issues. Michael Collins provides an excellent reading with his well-paced and expressive delivery combined with a wide range of male and female voices and accents. Professionally produced, this classic tale is recommended for all public, academic, and school libraries. Review [A] compelling, engaging story of characters and events that grips the listener's total attention from beginning to end. -- Library Bookwatch & Internet Bookwatch, May, 2002

About the Author CHARLES WADDELL CHESNUTT (1858-1932) was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He drew on his experiences as a biracial American to address racial passing in his classic novel "The House Behind the Cedars," Earning a living as a court stenographer and lawyer, Chesnutt supported a writing career that included the publication of numerous short stories and the completion of several other novels, some of which were considered too incendiary to be printed during his time. An active integrationist and civil rights leader, he was awarded a medal by the NAACP for distinguished literary contributions.

An Astounding American Novel By mp Charles Chesnutt's 1901 novel, "The Marrow of Tradition," is finally, after nearly a century, getting a broader audience, and deservedly so. Set in late 1890's North Carolina, Chesnutt's novel examines the psychology of turn of the century American race relations. Based on the incidents leading up to the 1898 Wilmington 'race riot,' "The Marrow of Tradition" is an astounding fictional study of American race relations, and their political, social, economic, and personal ramifications, which we still feel to-day. This is a novel which should join Twain's "Huckleberry Finn" as a key text in American literature courses, and in the broader social imaginary."The Marrow of Tradition" begins with multiple anxities - Major Carteret, a former Southern Civil War officer, whose family was nearly ruined as a result of the war, is in the process of rebuilding his family and his fortunes. Having founded a newspaper, 'The Morning Chronicle,' his fortunes seem to be on the rise. However, he envisions threats on every side - personally, the precarious life of his new born son constantly threatens to end his family line; politically, since the passage of the 15th Amendment, the black population of his hometown, Wellington, is increasingly subjecting his pride to the 'insult' of an 'inferior' race in positions of authority and influence. For the black population of Wellington, threats to their growing power are just as palpable - Carteret and his cronies (particularly General Belmont and 'Captain' McBane) are building up a 'white supremacy' movement; social relations between blacks and whites have the veneer of restraint, with explosive rage always bristling beneath the surface on both sides of the 'color line.' For black people like Sandy Campbell and Jane Letlow, in service to white families since before the war, investment in 'status quo antebellum' is a way of life. Others like Jerry Letlow and Josh Green represent absolute differences in opinion in their relations with the whites. For mixed-race individuals like Dr. William Miller and his wife Janet, social acceptance, respectability, and mobility seem possible. Miller's decision to build a hospital in Wellington is predicated on the hope that he might be a cornerstone for the up-and-coming black community. With a complex set of relations like this in place, the novel quickly draws us in. Carteret's determination in setting up a 'white supremacy' movement meets with various successes and failures, as he uses his newspaper to sow seeds of discontent among the white population, which is actually outnumbered in Wellington, two to one. An editorial from a black newspaper, against the extra-judicial practices of lynch mobs enrages Carteret and his group. A key relationship in the novel, between an old Southern aristocrat, John Delamere, his profligate grandson, Tom, and their longtime family servant, Sandy Campbell, sets the stage for heightened racial tensions, when Sandy is accused of murdering an elderly white woman, Polly Ochiltree, who is related to the Carterets.Chesnutt does a phenomenal job of juxtaposing the systems by which each individual and each group and sub-group in the novel deals with the realities of life in a post-Reconstruction southern town. From simple subsisting to aggressive attempts at change, from local traditions of hexcraft to public manipulation through the press, from defensive postures to mob mentality, from legislation to extra-legal action, from duties to the community to the duties owed to one's own family, Chesnutt presents his readers with a wide variety of strategies open to his characters. With a narrative voice which believes decisively in "Fate," the novel tries to illustrate the legacy of slavery, and the almost inevitable mess that comes about when stationary, progressive, and regressive mindsets clash on a public level. One of Chesnutt's major achievements is in never wholly giving way to group mentalities or broad generalizations with regard to the actors in this drama. Stereotypes are as soon dismissed as acknowledged. He clearly allows for and presents differences in opinion on the level of the individual - Josh Green's self-proclaimed mission of vengeance against white people is as deeply felt as Jerry Letlow's wishes to become white. Even within the 'white supremacy' Big Three, Careteret, Belmont, and McBane express radically different approaches to gaining what they imagine to be a common goal. White characters like Philadelphia surgeon, Dr. Burns, and Wellington newspaper man, Lee Ellis, are as inclusionary and accepting of black citizens and their aspirations as their respective social positions will allow them to be. There is a lot more going on in "The Marrow of Tradition" than I have pointed to here. Professor Eric Sundquist's introduction does an excellent job of setting up the historical, political, and biographical contexts involved in the novel. Overall, this is an extremely rich novel and very much worth reading.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. A melodramatic yet poignant tale for current times By A Customer This novel, originally published in 1901, is based on a historic event from 1898, a racially based incident in which about a dozen African Americans in Wilmington, North Carolina, were brutally murdered by Caucasians who'd lost political power, after Reconstruction, and successfully gained that power back by massacring some and completely intimidating all of the other African Americans in that community. Chesnutt, however, does not simply retell the story of the "race riot" but uses that event as the basis for a story about the tensions between peoples of different "races" and the disenfranchisement of African Americans at the initiation of Jim Crow Laws. This is an interesting read, and excellent for the classroom, particularly when thinking about using fiction as the basis to teach students to do research. There are three editions: two are good and the third should be ignored completely. Buy the 20th Cent. Classics edition (edited by Sundquist) or the Univ. of Michigan/Ann Arbor Paperback edition (edited by Farnsworth). Do NOT buy the Black Classics/X-Press version; it is a sham. The publishers have changed the title to Tradition and have left out portions of the novel, sometimes just phrases and other times whole paragraphs. The Black Classics/X-Press edition is a different read completely and should NOT be ordered.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Tradition and Justice By A Customer This Chesnutt novel is one of the most powerful fictional works about the nature of race relations published in the era of the Jim Crow South. It carefully relates issues of the "separate but equal" doctrine, Southern tradition and class distinctions, mob justice and lynching, generational shifts in race relations, and a number of other problems in an interesting narrative account of the Wilmington race riot. Chesnutt's style, powerful nuances, and memorable characters make this novel an essential read for anyone interested in the history of race relations in America.

A quenessential read for anyone interested in the history of Canada's premier Mtn Guide and father of heli skiing By alexander sharif This is a must read for anyone living on the Eastern slopes who travels to the mountains and engages in mountain activity. Chis gives an insight in to the making of Canada's chief Mtn guide, Hans Gmoser. He also writes lots about his best friend and business partner Leo Grillmair who is still alive and kicking hard. Other legends are also mentioned. I started it on a rainy weekend and could not put it down. On a side note, Chic is in the process of digitizing Hans's 10 movies with archives borrowed from the Wyatt museum in Banff. They will be treasures of the Rockies when they are available.

I picked it up after listening to Roenick interviewed on a sports radio station in Chicago. During the interview, his stories were all over the place but, knowing radio interviews, I figured they were simply getting him to hit some high points. Little did I know the book was written with the same lack of organization as the interview. It seems to be a stream of consciousness book with Roenick rambling on about several unrelated topics that end up in the same chapter. Roenick seems to set a record for the use of the word "I" and never allows you to forget the high opinion he has of himself. I loved you as a player, J.R., and rooted for you many times during your days playing at Chicago Stadium. During my reading if this book, however, I realized my cheers were reserved for his on-ice actions. Applause and cheers need not be reserved for the pen of this egotistical, felt-centered masturbation.

He kept reading it and laughing so much I had to pick it up and give it a read. I was extremely impressed with how well the narrative was. Roenick engaged you with each story he told about his career, family and friends. It was like you could picture sitting at a bar with him listening to his tales. It also gave me a new appreciation for the man. I knew he loved his fans but to read the stories touches your heart. It makes me know that I chose the right man to follow. My favorite story was about the cat. It was wrong and made me laugh so hard I was crying. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves hockey or enjoys a few hilarious stories.

"The night conspired with the beasts that chased her, as darkness licked her naked body." The novel begins with desperation, the kind that protagonist Lorraine Cutler understands as she meets women throughout the United States who have faced agonizing moments. A journalist dealing with her own despair, Lorraine is compelled to enter a fight that she didn't volunteer to join. Set in 1999 and the new 21st century, The Third Woman confronts the historical and contemporary indifference to the treatment of girls and women. From a rural Texas town to the lofty pines of the Maine woods; from the Manhattan skyline to the northwest cityscape of Seattle-Lorraine intersects with women who must respond to and survive the physical, emotional, and psychological wounds that scar their souls. As she connects with women across ethnic, age, and class lines, she realizes that a simple truth bears a profound meaning: "Life is about what you do!"

Great book for the bike rider who is contemplating racing By David Parrish This book is for the bike rider who has long thought, "I could try racing...I wonder if I could do it?" That was certainly my mindset when I fell into racing. Paul Page-Hanson puts himself inside the mind of the would-be racer and provides a practical, no-nonsense guide for getting yourself there. With just four required items: 1-This all inclusive book (with simple terms, teaches you how to use a sextant/navigate and includes all celestial data needed till the year 2056), 2-sextant, 3-compass and 4-universal time (shortwave radio or time piece) you can navigate the globe by using latitude and longitude derived from the sun with these four items and have peace of mind knowing that you have a reliable backup to GPS. Once you have your position in latitude and longitude, this book teaches you basic navigation (destination, heading and distance), so you will never be lost. For safety reasons and because equipment fails, batteries die, and equipment falls overboard, people going to sea should have at least two different methods of navigation. The preferred primary method is using a GPS system. This book will teach a secondary backup method of my version of the “Noon Shot Fix”. If you are headed offshore, just curious about celestial navigation or have an old sextant and wonder how it works, buy this book with the other required items and you won’t be disappointed. This book can be read in a short amount of time with sextant readings starting immediately. This book is a combination of basic theory, teaching only what you need for a noon shot fix and basic navigation/plotting, along with a checklist type form to calculate your position, all inclusive celestial data, many “completed” examples and information on emergency navigation. There are many other great celestial navigation techniques out there that people use every day, however many of these techniques require more dedication to learn/use. My goal was to create a simple book, that could be used by the average person with no background on the subject, and contain all the information needed that could be called on in a time of emergency. Anyone with basic math skills can learn/use this technique.

Life on a farm in the West of Ireland in the 1950s and 60s is anything but easy. Marked by scarcity and hardship, most families have a hard time simply keeping a roof over their heads and food in the mouths of their ever-expanding broods of children. Though at age fourteen and still technically a boy, young Tom Gallagher already does the work of an adult. His father works in England most of the year, returning each spring for a few weeks to cut the year's supply of fuel and plant the crops. When his father stops coming, brother Eamon, at sixteen, becomes man of the house. When Eamon bails out to England, Tom, at fourteen, steps into his brother's larger shoes and assumes the responsibility for completing the heavy tasks of farming with little mechanization--and impossible without the help of his mother and sisters. In this engaging memoir about growing up in hard times, Gallagher weaves the story of his own hardscrabble childhood through the larger cultural and historical contexts of the time, crafting a fascinating look at one young boy's life and the world in which he lived. Never resorting to self-pity or sentimentalism, Gallagher tells his tale in the great traditions of Irish storytellers, mixing plenty of wit, humor, and irony with the gritty realities of his experience--and the result is mesmerizing.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. One of the best Irish memoirs I've read in years By Meg Chapter 1 of Tara's Halls by Tom Gallagher developed a fan in me nearly instantly. I was so hoping Tom Gallagher's book would be made of the kind of storytelling that my Irish kin are so famous for, and I knew in the turn of a couple of pages I'd be enjoying this book and hoping it wouldn't end. While I'll admit that the few typos bugged me, the book was so personal and wonderfully narrated that I was able to let the errors go enough to enjoy the book. Mr. Gallagher has such a knack in putting the reader right in the place he's describing, be it a fort, a turf field, near a fire in his childhood home, outside the pub, or hiding out in a wooden hut and nearly changing his fate (and the fate of many others). I was so entertained by the stories, which didn't feel were broken-down or disjointed in the least bit; they flowed wonderfully. The author would steer me through a chapter that began with a backstory, drive past a terrible event and park next to a sweet piece of nostalgia, all the while describing the scenery and people with such intimacy that I felt like I knew everyone personally. Tara's Halls reminds me a lot of one of my favorite book series by Brendan O'Carroll (The Mammy, The Chisellers, The Granny and The Young Wan), mixed with a dash of Frank McCourt (Anglea's Ashes and 'Tis). There were so many parts of the book that literally made me laugh out loud, and one that comes to mind is Mr. Gallagher's telling of JFK and how revered he was in Ireland because he was of Irish descent, so clearly they "gave him to America." And how Irish homes had his photo on mantles next to The Pope and Jesus. It was hilarious to read, especially, as with all gifted storytellers, the way Gallagher shared it.Ireland is a beautiful country and one that I hold near and dear to my heart, but inasmuch as I love Ireland, I also know the history of struggle and strife and hardships that the generations before mine endured and how that is also a part of the love and pride. I feel like Tara's Halls will lend a genuine and emotional view of the Gallagher family and those who were part of their lives, no matter how small a role. I would hope that people who have never read a memoir like this will take a chance and try it, as it's a fine example of such a novel. There is a list of definitions in the back of which explains some of the Irish slang throughout the book (though it's easy enough to dissect in context while reading), and I'm glad for it because it means that the book is written without holding anything back, as a true Irish tale should be told. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to read about Ireland, living there, especially in the 1950's, and those looking for something that is endearing, will shake a tear from your eye and illicit a good laugh. It's ironic that it's a feel-good book in my opinion because of all of struggle and pain told. That is a gift of Irish storytelling, and this book is a wonderful contribution to that. I'm hopeful that the epilogue doesn't mean there won't be a second book from the author. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Although, we are given a glimpse into his life post emigration, this memoir is mainly focused on his life in Ireland. Mr. Gallagher authenticates his work by utilizing his native tongue and dialect. Please do not let this aspect hinder you from indulging in his amazing life journey, as the author provides a glossary at the end. The way in which these words are written, it definitely pulls the reader into his personal life in a most vivid way. You feel as if you have been transported to beautiful Ireland. Don't let the scenery fool you though, life is full of imperfections among the beauty. Growing up in Ireland was no easy task! Families were large and broken apart due to poverty. The men would emigrate to England or America for work to send money back home, and upon returning home for a short season would procreate to enlarge the family. Many of these families were farming families and each person had specific jobs to complete. Schooling was minimal due to the amount of help needed on the farm. My heart ached when Mr. Gallagher depicted his loss of his pet pig, Polly. Unable to keep her as a pet, every bit of Polly was utilized to sustain the family during these hard times. There is much heartache among these pages but also a strength and courage that is difficult to explain. There is so much that a reader will obtain from within these pages. I would recommend this memoir to anyone interested in the life and times in Ireland, or to anyone feeling down on their luck. This book will most definitely be inspiring.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

It's like to your Irish uncle telling about his life in Ireland By SueBiss I did really enjoy reading Tom's memoirs about his interesting life here and in Ireland. I was raised Roman Catholic, I am a few years younger than Tom, and I can really relate to all things Catholic and what was pumped into us to believe in God if you wanted to get into heaven, it always entailed; praying the rosaries, going to chuch a lot and never missing mass on Sunday, and feeling guilty about everything! His story put me in mind of the book of Angela's Ashes except Tom grew up on a farm poor and struggling in Ireland not in the city like Frank McCourt. Both of these author had a hard life growing up and these men are wonderful writers today from their experiences of a hard life. I could listen to Tom talk about his life all day long, his big family (I wonder how many stories he didn't tell about his siblings) the farm animals they raised as pets, how hard farming was from growing potatoes to cutting turf every year for fuel or freeze, dances they went to; where everyone stood on the sidelines waiting for the first guy to cross the dance floor to ask the first girl to dance and hoped not be turned down infront of all your friends, I had a laugh at the part about the first transistor radio, how no one could believe how you could walk around listening to the radio on something so small, and where you could get one! I wonder how lost kids today would be without a cell phone in their hands 24/7 and only had a radio to listen to! I am glad Tom had a chance to get out of Ireland and was able to come to America, our gain, Ireland loss. He made a good life for himself and a few mistakes in marriage but he did come out on top as far as I am concerned, he gave us a fantastic book to read about how one mans life lived with compassion and caring to insite on how hard work and an honest living can make for a great story telling.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I have a greater respect for Cena after reading this book! By Amazon Customer This book was not only eye-opening as it discussed the early years of his life, but it was also entertaining as it went through the transitiions he made in his career to build himself into one of the greatest wrestlers who's ever worked the circuits. Though there is a lot of interesting detail that I can share about his childhood an early years the chapter that Ioved the most was the one that covered his five greatest battles. They were descibed in such detail it was like seeing them play out in front of me. With other information like his work with Make-A-Wish, to his love of anime as a kid, and even why he began lifting weights at the age of 12, this books packs a punch with a lot of information as well as entertainment. I received this book for free in exchange for my honest opinion and for me, just like John Cena, it warrants 5 stars.

Gang City and Cenation members: you may want to check this out By Jam Diaz This book reminds me of how the world of basketball was changed when Dennis Rodman came into the picture. John Cena was a game changer too, so to speak. Or at least how this book describes him to be. I'm no wrestling aficionado, and I only know a few names from the business, so it's a delight to be aware of this this tad bit of information. One could easily grasp that this book is written precisely and the author must have it proofread for a few times hence, the fluid writing. I also like how the author took time to explain some words related to wrestling that a non-fan may not deduced its meaning unless one searches for it on the web. Coupled with a few pictures for better appreciation. A++ for effort. However, the author focused too much on John Cena's life inside the ring and covered only a brief about his life outside of it. It would have been great to see another side of the persona that is Dr. Thugamonics, like how he was involved in a restaurant fiasco which resulted to a stabbed kidney on his part. Small things like that matter especially if one claims it to be a "NO HOLDS BARRED BIOGRAPHY". Over all, this book is an okay read. Fans of Cena may be thrilled as they relive the memories of his start as THE KURT ANGLE asked the immortal question, "WHO IN THE HELL ARE YOU?"

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Getting to know the man behind the legend. By Norman Dale Smith I am not a wrestling fan but I have seen some of John Cena's films. Although they may not have been Oscar worthy but they were quite entertaining and action packed. I first got to know more about him watching the reality show Total Divas. I wanted to learn more about him after seeing glimpses of what he's like outside of the big screen. Luckily, I found this book. It was an entertaining read. I was quite surprised that I enjoyed it a lot. The book talks about John's early childhood, his transition to the wrestling world and how he worked to make himself a big name in the industry he loved so much. I learned so much about him but I also learned a lot about perseverance, hard work and dedication. All of which he exhibited working his way to the top. It's a good read and one for John Cena fans.

It kept my interest peaked at all times and I could not find anything I would be critical about. I think anyone who buys the book and reads it will have an enjoyable time all the way to the ending.I can usually tell in a short time if I will like a book and I really enjoyed reading this one because it had very little bad language. If you like spending your time in the gutter with filth and immoral people then don't bother with this book, but if you like to feel good when you are reading then this is the book for you.

A perky southern California girl from a privileged upbringing has it all. Or does she? This powerful memoir by Amanda Sue Rose, as told to Mary Anne Benedetto, reveals the details of her journey through life with four devious husbands. Expecting sweet marital bliss, but instead exposed to cheating, drug dealing, violently exploding, murdering and suicidal spouses, will she ever discard the emotionally negative effects of a succession of catastrophic marriages and exchange wedding bands for the fifth time? This tale of four real life "groomzillas" will amaze the reader, but hopefully succeeds in raising awareness that not genuinely knowing one's intended spouse (the good, the bad and the ugly sides) is a potential recipe for multi-level disaster. Red flags must elicit caution, discernment and tons of prayer before becoming financially, physically and emotionally entangled via matrimony. Amanda Sue knows!

This little jewel flows along nicely in a very easy to read style, much as if you're sitting there listening to Amanda tell her story. This book's subject is outside the realm of the books I normally read but when I realized I might know some of the players I knew I had to buy it and I'm glad I did. Not only did I know some of them, I learned a thing or two also, and having been around the block some myself I found similarities in some of the events that I've experienced in my own life. I tend to read a book for just a few minutes a day so it takes me weeks to finish one, but this one I breezed through in three days. That says a lot right there because I almost never do that.

Zoe Jones is an eleven-year-old sixth-grader attending W. G. Wesley Middle School. The first year of middle school is supposed to be the best year of all times. However, it's Zoe Jones's first week of school, and she can't find anything to be excited about due to her parents getting a divorce. Zoe enters her first week of middle school not able to pay attention and feeling sad because she thinks that she's the reason her parents are getting a divorce. But when Zoe's teachers notice that something is wrong with Zoe, she is taken to the school nurse, who then takes her to the school counselor, to find out what is bothering Zoe. Once Zoe discloses that her parents are getting a divorce and she thinks that she is the cause of the divorce, the school counselor intervenes and calls a meeting with Zoe's mother. Will Zoe Jones continue to blame herself for her parents getting a divorce? Or will counseling help her to see that she is not the cause of the divorce and help her to accept the fact that her parents are divorcing and move on so that she can enjoy her first year of middle school? My Parents Divorced Me is a story of a child dealing with her parents going through a divorce by the incomparable Africa Hann. In the book, the main point is, when married couples are going through a divorce, they don't realize that the children are going through a divorce as well. This book is to encourage the parents to maintain a healthy and positive relationship with each other for the sake of the child, and that they should not allow their differences to interfere with continuing to raise the child as parents if not a couple. Additionally, when parents are going through a divorce, they should seek family counseling to assist the child with coping with the traumatic experience of divorce.

About the Author Africa Hann, who comes from a working-class background, is an Atlanta writer who would only write when she was feeling down. After earning a master degree from Clark Atlanta University's, Whitney M. Young, Jr., School of Social Work, Advance Standing Program and becoming a child protection service worker in the special investigation unit at the Department of Human Services, she decided to implement what she has learned into her writings. Her passion for child abuse and neglect, mental health disparities, and the elderly population has inspired her to write not only when she is feeling down but also for the love of people and understanding.

By Amazon Customer This book is a great read especially for children that are experiencing or have experienced the trauma that divorce brings when dealing with the dynamics of their parents being separated or divorced. This book sends a positive message to the parents that advises them not to use their cold or children as leverage when going through a divorce. I advise all married couples to read as well as children.

50 Women, Book Two is the second part of a two book anthology series of personal stories of strength and perseverance told by 50 different women from 30 countries. In these individual stories, the women discuss their unique experiences overcoming obstacles concerning political, cultural and societal issues, armed conflict, gender based violence, immigration, health afflictions and business ventures. Many of their stories challenge common stereotypes and provide living historical accounts of the densely complicated political and societal issues of our time. In this second book of the 50 Women anthology series, we explore stories from North America, South America, Central America, Mexico and Western Europe.

50 Women: Book Two, by Jessica Buchleitner

Review "The women of 50 Women, Book Two show us that our voices must be heard. Their courage, grace, and determination reverberate through us all."  - Julie Burton, president, Women's Media Center  "Inspiring tales of women who've surmounted incredible odds." - Julia Scheeres, New York Times bestselling author of Jesus Land: A Memoir and A Thousand Lives: The Untold Story of Jonestown  "History has hushed the voices of women. Here, those voices roar into nourishing stories that benefit us all."- Cameron Conaway, 2015 grantee, Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting (India) and former executive editor the Good Men Project  "50 Women, Book Two is a powerful example of pro-voice--supporting women as they tell their own story. Let's listen closely, with open minds, and give our support and respect."- Aspen Baker, executive director of Exhale and author of Pro-Voice: How to Keep Listening When the World Wants a Fight  "Across countries, cultures, and classes, the stories in this volume offer gut-wrenching insights into the often vicious politics of gender and the strength it takes to be a survivor."- Meenakshi Gigi Durham, author of The Lolita Effect and professor, University of Iowa "50 Women, Book Two makes clear that there is no doubt about the strength of women of all ages. All of us will be inspired by these accounts and be assured we should seize the moment as well as the years and decades on the horizon to hit the ground running."- Rita Henley Jensen, editor-in-chief, Women's eNews"50 Women, Book One was so compelling in helping us begin to understand the lives of so many women all over the world from the Middle East, Africa, and other regions. With 50 Women, Book Two, Buchleitner continues to provide fascinating and intimate portraits of individual women's lives, including their barriers and successes. The storytelling provides critically important commentary about the diverse lives, cultures, and statuses of women from the Americas and Europe." - Liz Abzug, professor, Barnard College, Columbia University and founder/CEO, Bella Abzug Leadership Institute   "These writings take you to the battlefields that women face each day because of discrimination and the constant mutilation of their rights and dignity. After reading these stories no one could say this isn't happening. Men and women need to stand against violence in any form. Peace will come faster if each person stands up for what is right. Silence is not an option anymore. Let's fight with activism by calling out injustices everywhere." - Ada Alvarez, founder and president of Stop the Silence Foundation and director of Women Committee in the Senate of Puerto Rico

I read the first book in this series and could hardly believe what these women had survived. Although it was a hard read at parts because of the subject matter I wanted to see the experiences of the women in this next book. This second one was even more powerful and the stories were just as unbelievable. Cults, border crossing. You really learn that women are freaking tough souls! Men can read this series too, of course. Anyone can because many of the stories touch on current events but I am happy to share this with my daughter and Niece for the most part since it celebrates and honors strength and dignity. Beautiful!

Excerpt from DeadlockThe publication of "Deadlock" brings the career of a most arresting and significant novelist to the, point at which it becomes possible, if not imperative, to add something to what Mr. J. D. Beresford wrote, some six years ago, in his wholly admirable Foreword to "Pointed Roofs." That career, here defined by another milestone, has proceeded thus far, through considerable stages of growth, to be sure, but without essential change of direction. It has also become - what, for all I know, Miss Richardson herself might humorously deprecate the notion of its being - a substantial Force.Somehow, I cannot imagine this writer as attaching much importance to the concept of herself as a contemporary and future influence. She is all for thinking with one's nerves: for seizing, with sensitive delicacy of intuition, the immediate quintessence of things as they are in themselves - not the ultimate effect of things as they arc in their implications. She once made her recurring character, Miriam Henderson - a being whom I choose, without argument, to identify with certain past phases of the novelist's own consciousness - deliver several pages of really fruitful speculation on the ultimate function of the novel.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Deadlock By Steven Davis In the previous novels of Richardson's autobiographical series her protagonist, Miriam Henderson, has been largely concerned with establishing her own identity as a single and independent woman in a world where this was still a novelty for a woman of her age and class. She develops curious blends of nationalism and cosmopolitanism, Christianity and agnosticism, science and spirituality. The one area where her attitudes are unmixed is her resentful and largely homegrown feminism. At age twenty-five, Miriam now has her first serious relationship with a man. He is a Russian Jew named Michael Shatov. Every attribute of his being seems destined to expose and inflame Miriam's inner contradictions while being irresistibly appealing to her both intellectually and sexually.Miriam hungers for foreign culture and contact with foreigners, yet she can't help wanting to prove Englishness superior to all foreign values. "London is heaven and can't be explained. To be sent away is to be sent out of heaven." Yet Shatov exposes her to ideas and feelings that she simply can't find in her English experience.Race and religion are intertwined in Miriam's mind, as they were in general at that time. Shatov's Jewishness is more alien to her than his Russianness or his masculinity. Underneath her facade of intellectual curiosity and open-mindedness she finds a core of bigotry. Rather than directly face and challenge her values, Miriam looks for an escape. She projects her internal conflict as resentment against the one who exposes it. One moment she is craving Shatov's companionship, the next moment she is unable to stand the sight of him. She takes a smug pride in her association with someone so exotic, yet she is embarrassed to be seen in public with him.Sexually Miriam is prepared from the beginning to resent Shatov and distance herself from him simply because he is a man. But here again he disarms her by declaring himself a feminist (a word she had never heard before), by agreeing with her on most gender issues, and by being almost effeminate himself. Yet here he exposes a conflict she would not have anticipated: intellectually she adores his androgynous makeup, but sexually she is repulsed by it. She wants him to be more of a man to her, even though she would hate him for it. Sexual feelings she has never experienced before come suddenly up against the feminism that she has considered unshakable. So this is the multi-dimensional deadlock in which Miriam Henderson finds herself. It is a condition strongly representative of her time--perhaps most times--perhaps in the development of most thinking individuals--when abstract thought runs afoul of traditional cultural values and the desires of the body defy those of the mind.
