Against a backdrop of stunning locations incorporating Florida, Cornwall, Scotland and Lancashire, their story unfolds. There was an old woman who lived in a shoe; She had so many children, she didn't know what to do. She fed them all broth without any bread; Then whipped them all soundly and sent them to bed. ~Mother Goose, The Dorling Kindersley Book of Nursery Rhymes (2000) She took them from the woods, and she took them from dells, from hamlets and homesteads and across the wide world, she found young orphans, those abandoned and left on their own, and gave them a home.  And all she asked for was a little piece of their soul in payment... Whoever said nursery rhymes were harmless?

Where Michael Crichton left off with “Disclosure”, Spears has followed with his six novels. His latest “Empowered” blends with Spears experience as a senior corporate executive along with his ability to create a solid plot with characters immersed with tension, that only a veteran of corporate life would understand, along with danger and the accompanying terror.Young 33 year old Colin Jensen acquires the dream position as the president of ThuePhase Chemicals, a division of a company owned by an investment group waiting to put the company on the market. Personally I did not like this character from the beginning to the end, but such is life in corporate American today.Beginning his new role, Jensen decides to play the role of an undercover boss working in the warehousing section of the company so that he could learn the good, bad and ugly of his division. Oh, this is bringing back bad memories of working in the production/warehousing department of a major corporation after working in a position in the corporate headquarters. Dark as it is, it is reality, although in this situation, the new disguised president finds criminal activity abound. And with criminal activity, there is danger. What to do about the criminal activity? Well, you need to read the book, but you will not be disappointed. This is, after all, a corporate thriller. Perhaps one of the best from author Spears, although for this reader his thriller “Incentivize” is a read that I still think about!

The book worked well with two parallel plot lines that come together for a surprising conclusion. A retrospective on corporate politics from Colin, the main character, and his former mentor provide a timely juxtaposition to the current mess that he has gotten himself into. Unpredictable and filled with biting commentary on corporate life, the book was hard to put down and kept me guessing throughout.

Auralia was gone without a trace. Only the memory of her lingered. Like her magic, invisible yet tangible. Before she had disappeared, she had written a note. It was addressed to no one. And yet, it was clearly directed at everyone. Her fans, the hordes of devoted followers left longing for her beauty: "I have surprised the world with my magic, but my magic has been my only company...Every man who has said they loved me, loved me only for my secrets, my powers, but most of all for my beauty. No one sees the real me. They do not see my soul. None have seen me. None, and so I must disappear..." Auralia vanished like clouds over the moon, like mist across a river, like daylight when night appears... She was gone; no one had seen her since her last performance.

Thriller set in Chengdu, China (“the city where the sun never shines”) By TripFiction Every parent’s nightmare…..Lorelei (Lori) heads off to South East Asia for a backpacking adventure – and ends up in China. It’s not hard for her mother Jo and stepfather Nick to keep in touch in the era of the internet, she regularly blogs about her travels and experiences, so everyone can follow her journey. A familiar family scenario. But soon the posts dry up, causing a ripple of concern initially but, hey, these young folk get distracted and involved in what they are doing. It’s normal. But as days turn into a couple of weeks, the anxiety rises and Jo turns from Nick to Tom, Lori’s biological father. This of course adds strain to the floundering relationship between Jo and Nick…Together, Tom and Jo decide they must set out for Chengdu (pronounced Chungdu) in Sizuan Province, China, where Lori had settled for a stint of teaching. So they head off from Manchester on KLM and pop up in hugely unfamiliar territory, where the sights, sounds and smells compound their unease. They have solid support and advice from Missing Overseas but the input on the ground is not effusive or really that engaged. Our man in Chengdu, the consul Peter Dunne, is there to help the parents though the formalities and it is clear that the the local police force doesn’t want to see the image of their city tarnished by anything murky or untoward. Resolve and perseverance, really, are the only qualities that are carrying Tom and Jo along, and the whole process feels frustratingly slow. The investigation crawls and this is palpable, the parents largely have to fall back on their own resources to get to the bottom of what has been going on; their daughter is clearly now a missing person. It is quite sobering to realise that people go missing abroad sufficiently often for charities to be established in order to help locate them and support families and friends back home. Cath talked to the Lucie Blackman Trust (formerly Missing Abroad) when she was researching the book. It is however all too clear that the wheels of bureaucracy run excruciatingly slowly in real life – and in the story Jo and Tom clearly have to push as hard as they can to find out the fate of their missing daughter.Chengdu provides a superb, hot and chili soaked backdrop to the heart stopping search for Lori, and clearly Cath renders it as a vibrant and at times oppressive place – the people mill as the parents endeavour to crack through the wall of foreign-ness with which they are confronted… feeding carp with baby bottles, or discovering that 20% of the world’s computers are made there, or bike riders wearing their jackets back to front….A gripping read.We chat to the author about writing and China: http://www.tripfiction.com/thriller-set-in-chengdu/

By Jim Napier, mystery & crime fiction reviewer After graduating from university British student Lori Maddox wants a break. Like many recent grads she’s decided to spend her gap year abroad, photographing her travels and posting her adventures on a blog site. A twenty-three-year-old with a sensible head on her shoulders, her plans include stops in Thailand, Vietnam, and Hong Kong. Her family, mother Jo, father Tom, and stepfather Nick are delighted. They wouldn’t dream of standing in Lori’s way. In September they drive her to the airport, happy that she is opening a new door on her life. For a few days everything goes well; then the emails cease. Soon, however, she resumes posting on her blog and their concerns disappear. More weeks go by and Lori posts from Vietnam. She’s made a new friend, an Australian named Dawn Jeffreys, and together they plan to visit China. On Christmas Day they Skype Lori. Everything seems to be going really well: she’s enchanted by the sites she’s photographed in her travels, and she’s picking up bits of the language. In February she emails them with some surprising news: she’s working for an agency in Chengdu, China, tutoring locals in English. It’s giving her some welcome income and made it possible for her to prolong her stay. But by April there are some worrying signs. It’s been nine days since Lori’s last post on her blog, and she’s not answering Jo’s emails. Two more days pass and Jo considers contacting the British police. They take the details, but she is, after all, an adult, and they’re not overly concerned. They promise to pass the information on to the Chinese authorities and suggest that she contact a charity group named Missing Overseas, where Jo posts the details of Lori’s disappearance. Before long she gets a call from Lori’s friend Dawn, who’s hardly reassuring: the last time she’d heard from Lori was three weeks ago.Faced with the intransigence of the Chinese authorities and the well-meaning-but-ineffectual British career diplomat in a nearby consulate assigned to help, Jo and Tom decide to journey to China themselves and conduct their own search. What they encounter will turn out to be every parent’s worst nightmare: unable to speak the language, unfamiliar with the customs involved in approaching total strangers, and ill-equipped in investigative techniques and international protocol, they find themselves truly strangers in a strange land, utterly isolated and at loggerheads with the system at every turn.In Half the World Away Cath Staincliffe deftly taps into the concerns of many parents who are blessed with talented children entering adulthood—committed to broadening their range of experiences, yet at the same time anxious, even apprehensive, about what unforeseen situations they may encounter. Her narrative is absolutely—and terrifyingly—believable, and will send a chill deep into the heart of parents with children approaching maturity. It is the age-old dilemma of wanting the best for your offspring, yet wanting to keep them safe and look after them for as long as possible. It is, of course, an unwinnable situation, which makes its resonance with readers all the stronger. Staincliffe’s forte lies not only in her ability to create and absolutely compelling tale featuring believable and engaging characters, but also in her talent to explore the nuances of their relationships; the tension that arises between Lori’s mother Jo and her ex as they search for Lori spills over into Jo’s relationship with her present husband, and threatens to poison their relationship as well. It all makes for very convincing reading. In the end the award-winning author has produced yet another superbly layered suspense tale that will leave readers satisfied, yet profoundly disturbed._______Originally published in Reviewing the Evidence, August 2015.Since 2005 Jim Napier's reviews and interviews have appeared in several Canadian newspapers and on such websites as Spinetingler, The Rap Sheet, Shots Magazine, Crime Time, Reviewing The Evidence, January magazine, the Montreal Review of Books, the Ottawa Review of Books, and Amazon.com, as well as on his own award-winning crime fiction site, Deadly Diversions.

Half the world away and missing By read-along-with-sue Cath Staincliffe is a well developed author that can get your attention from the very start. If you had an adult child who wanted to travel, would you stop them? No. Her step dad was very encouraging of her getting 'life' experiences. Her Mother too, but of course us Mums would be saying "Stay in touch""Be careful, but enjoy yourself" "Let me know how you are"And such things like this.Lori, their daughter has just graduated and wants to take her photography expertise and make use of it travelling to China. Just think of all the beautiful experiences she can have there and all those photo's she can take.Waving her off was very hard for her Mom, but us Moms have to let our children flee the nest and after all, Lori has been away at University, but she did come home now and again, much more than she will be from half the world away! How would you feel if your daughter or son was half the world away from you and where they usually kept in contact, suddenly, you cannot reach them? What if you were following their blog about their trip and suddenly days go by without any posts?Text messages not being read let alone being replied to.You would tell yourself, just wait a little time. See if I am not over reacting. But then........Your instincts tell you...This is not normal. I "feel" something is wrong.Your worse fear has come true........SHE IS MISSINGThe very tense moments of this is so spell binding. I found it literally hard to break myself away from these pages when the intensity warmed up.The author writes with such feeling, such emotion, you feel you are experiencing what these parents are experiencing.Yes it has TWIST and yes it has TURNS and unexpectedly, you do not know which way it is going to go.Will she be found? Will she be found alive? What I loved about this also, was the telling of how others reacted when they knew Lori was missing. Also, that Lori is not missing in the UK she is missing in another country altogether and of course, they have their own ways of doing things which just doesn't seem feasible or acceptable at times. Can you tell I liked this book :)Its a no brainer, I would definitely say ONE CLICK this, you would miss out on a brilliant read if not.

According to Homer's Odyssey, the daughters of Pandareus, though innocents both nurtured and favoured by goddesses, were ordained by Zeus to be tormented by the hateful Furies. No hero is sent to save them. No mutiny, no uproar, not a single protest is recorded against the injustice. Generations of Homer lovers have perforce accepted this prime example of callous indifference by Olympians. Not so Alethea Crowe, who has gestated a well-argued revisionist construct to explain if not excuse the gods' behaviour. To make her case, the enigmatic professor connects and throws fresh light on those parts of the creation story and the myth of Tantalus that most strain credulity. The author brings to life the family of Olympians with fond affection. Meet straitlaced Hera daring a bamboo chair to collapse under her. Ferrari-driving Hermes overly jealous of his reputation. Aphrodite having difficulty with time. And Dionysus, the would-be thespian, who alone among them shares a very human passion. Gods and humans take their turn on stage. Mortal protagonists prove expendable. One by one they meet a violent end as Ascendant Zeus, menacing offstage presence, orchestrates the daughters' fate. But perhaps Zeus' power is not what it once was, and a new 'Ascendant' is waiting, unbeknownst, in the wings. Suspense builds up chapter by chapter throughout the author's unique page-turner, all the way to its moving and memorable climax.

Review 'This is a thought-provoking work of fiction, an enthralling thriller to be read and reread, offering new delights each time. I enjoyed it enormously' Jenny March, author, The Penguin Book on Classical Myths --.

About the Author The author, professor of History not Eng. Lit, finds the labelling of her work as historical novel misleading, as biography perverse, and detective fiction an insult.

The gods are living comfortably in the modern world, coasting on their power, when some long-discarded Titans decide to enter the game and shake things up again by using humans to unearth a dangerous secret. Among the gods, at least fun-loving Dionysus has the gumption to stand up to Zeus's terrible retribution, but I will recommend, without spoiler-ing, that you do not count the humans out.The Ascendant is a fun, twisty romp with some serious heft behind it. I devoured it as if it were my own child!

More Than Just A Rat Trap: Small Game Trapping, by Blake Alma

From the Author I often hear of one using his rat trap to trap one rat and throwing it away. It is sad, they are wasting that trap, they only used it once! Well, rat traps can be used over and over again, so do not throw them away. I'm an avid trapper, and I thought to myself, "I wonder if a rat trap can trap squirrels." I put my thought to work. Lo and behold it worked, well, sometimes. I wanted to make it better. I quickly then started thinking of mods to make the rat trap more powerful. Adding teeth, bone crushers, and more kill bar strength were my first ideas. It worked, almost to well. I ended up catching not only squirrels, but all kinds of small game. Rabbits, chipmunks, and birds were just some of the animal I trapped. I continued coming up with ideas to make a rat trap so much more than just a rat trap. I decided to put all my rat trap's mods into a small book. Once I finished the book, I had it published. The book turned out to be a hit, for it made a rat trap so much more than just a rat trap!

An impressive journey David Henry took to walk a 1,000 miles to talk about climate change By Brian Ettling I am sure you have heard the expression, 'It's not enough to talk the talk, you must walk the walk.' Basically, speaking out about an issue of deep concern is not enough, we must take action.David Henry did just that. He walked over a thousand miles to talk to people about climate change. From June to August 2013, David walked by foot from Boston, Massachusetts to South Charleston, Ohio. It's a distance of 1,042 miles over 60 days. He kept his belongings inside a large covered cart, which people he encountered thought it looked like a giant mailbox. Hence, the title of the book, David and the Giant Mailbox. In 2012, David Henry started feeling restless in his home in St. Louis Missouri that he must do something about climate change. He had read enough news reports about extreme weather and learned enough about the science of climate change from sources like skepticalscience.com. Through his interest in this subject, David learned that climate change is real, caused by human activity currently, it impacting people right now, and we must act fast to reduce the nastiest consequences. It worried David that people did not seem to care. He then discovered how Americans perceive climate change. He read the September 2012 Yale Project for Climate Change Communication published report, Global Warming's Six Americas. This report based on several public opinion surveys notes that Americans fall into six categories of attitudes on climate change: Alarmed, concerned, cautious, disengaged, doubtful, and dismissive. According to that report, only about 16% of the population was alarmed like David. As far as the other 84% the population, David felt angry they were not as alarmed as him. He wrote,"I envisioned all of humanity sleepwalking down a narrow path to the edge of a cliff. That made me pissed. I couldn't just sit back and let it happen. I decided it was time to do something."I can totally relate how David felt in 2012. The same awareness about climate change happened to me working during the winter of 2007-08 in Everglades National Park in south Florida. As I share in my current climate change talks and speeches, I became a naturalist park ranger narrating boat tours in Everglades National Park in 1998. At that time, I knew nothing about climate change. However, park visitors were starting to ask me about this global warming thing and they expect park rangers to know everything. After reading all I could about climate change for years, by the winter of 2007-08, I could not sleep at night working in the Everglades. I felt I had to do something about climate change. To this day, I still work my summer job at Crater Lake National Park. However, I gave up my winter job in the Everglades to return home to St. Louis for the winter. I had no idea what I was going to do in my hometown. However, I knew I had to speak out, write and organize locally to inspire others to take action to reduce the threat of climate change. 16 years later, I am still trying to figure how to take bold action on climate change.Over the years, I have take some bold actions to speak out on climate change awareness and promoting action with lots of public speaking and organizing. However, none of my actions are as brave as David Henry walking over a 1,000 miles to talk about climate changeThe book was a fascinating page turner about David's 1,042 mile journey on foot. It may been been over 300 pages long, but it was a very quick read. The chapters, averaging about 5 to 6 pages long, were basically an account of what happened each day. As an aspiring cross country hiker, I quickly learned that a cross county hike is not easy.David had to confront many busy streets with no sidewalks, intense thunderstorms, sore feet, fatigue near the end, sunburn, trying to find a place to camp each night, flat tires on his cart, etc. With all of the frustrations, he add ask himself multiple times if it was worth it to continue.Friends warned him to be leery of people. However, David found numerous people willing to help him out on a pinch. In his everyday life, David is more of a quiet and reserved guy. Conversations are not always easy for him. Therefore, part of the wonder of the book is seeing David break out of his comfort zone and engage people. The cart shaped like a mailbox was an amazing conversation starter or ice breaker for people he encountered. In walking long distances, David got to experience firsthand the Anne Franck quote:“In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart."David's quote though was not just to walk to meet people. His big goal was to have a conversation with as many people he could find about climate change. His specific plan was to have at least 100 global warming conversations while he walked across the country. As David shares his stories of the conversations, he provides a great example how to converse with people about climate change. After folks would approach him about what he was doing, David would gently explain he was walking across to create more awareness about climate change. Some folks took a genuine interest, others just changed the subject, some were disinterested and just a few wanted to argue with David in a hostile manner. In the few cases where folks wanted to strongly disagree with David, he would completely listen to them in a heartfelt way. He would then quietly to try correct their misconceptions about the science by quoting such sources as the Consensus Project, which affirmed that 97% of climate scientists agree climate change is hapening and it is mostly human caused.Through the book's recollection of his conversations, David gives a great lesson to not get angry, lecture, or insult the people when he occasionally met people who wanted to engage him in a hostile way. Although he imagined before and during the walk of wanting to grab someone by the scruff of the neck if they dismissed climate change, he never does that. He always tried to find common ground in every interaction while holding on to his conviction that we must act on the climate crisis. From his courage of taking this long journey by foot and his open heart when encountering people, it felt like even the most hard core climate contrarians seemed like they still found a way to like, help, and even admire David. He found other ways to relate to folks when the conversation of climate change was a non-starter. His audacious walk and friendly interactions gave climate doubters a positive perspective that they do not experience when global warming is mentioned on TV or the radio. Thus, he does become a good ambassador for caring for our planet during his trek. From his many interactions, David learned a new faith and optimism for humanity. He witnessed enough good, caring, concerned and open minded people like him that we just may avoid the worst impacts of climate change.David's experience reminded me of a quote from Julia Butterfly Hill. She is best known for having living in a 180-foot (55 m)-tall, roughly 1500-year-old California Redwood tree, affectionately known as "Luna," for two years between December 1997 and December 1999. Hill lived high up in the tree the entire time to prevent Pacific Lumber Company loggers from cutting it down. Julia documented that experience in another book I recommend reading, The Legacy of Luna. The second book wrote by Julia, One Makes a Difference, she proclaimed:"Eternal optimism joined with loving action is the most powerful tool I own."Even if I not able to personally walk across country, David's bold action gave me optimism that one person (I) can make a difference. Even more, his journey showed that people do have enough good and generosity inside of them that we can reduce the threat of climate change.David, thank you so much for writing this book.

Anyone who has travelled by land from Massachusetts to Ohio will enjoy David’s tales of his 1000 mile walk By Kathleen Hull David and the Giant Mailbox will appeal to a wide range of readers, and I found it intriguing on several levels. On his sojourn David met many people with differing opinions on climate change. The repartee in the conversations he had shows a continuum of beliefs and practices. We have a long way to go before any agreement is reached, and thanks to David for entering the fray. He obviously touched many lives, and stimulated some thinking on the subject, including mine.Anyone who has travelled by land from Massachusetts to Ohio will enjoy David’s tales of his 1000 mile walk. In an age where few walk to the grocery store it is almost inconceivable to imagine walking through four states. He faced many challenges finding food, shelter, replacement parts, laundry facilities, and a safe route for his two month trip, as well as battling insects and sore feet. His descriptions of the many trails travelled and his tales of camping exploits whetted my appetite for similar adventures. All in all it’s a story well worth reading.

By Mary Outten David has given us a wonderfully written account of what is is like to step out of our modern digitally-enhanced comfort zone and converse with total strangers. His topic, climate change, is complex and difficult to grapple with in everyday conversation. He writes honestly about the discomforts of walking 1,000 miles. The uplifting conclusion one reaches after reading this is that he found plenty of people who were willing to engage in conversation, and plenty of people who showed quite a lot of compassion and respect for a "climate-walker". Truly inspiring, an excellent example of someone who "walks the talk".

The 1970s have long been a decade regarded with a wary eye by those who never experienced it and a weary eye by those have. The 1960s had come to a shaggy, uncertain end and the only sensible reaction was to find solace in what writer Tom Wolfe termed the Me Decade. Claymont, Delaware, was a typical town in the 1970s. The clothing styles, music, pursuit of recreation and day to day life were no different than what you might find in Haddonfield, New Jersey, Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, or Jacksonville, Florida, at least on the surface, but it was also distinctly Claymont as seen through the eyes of one of its more feckless, curious and mischievous junior citizens. Meet his family, Rodney Reeves, Freddie Lang and a host of others, including the inimitably unforgettable Boomer, and their wild and wooly adventures.

Francis is an outstanding biographical book that is well put together & really transports you back in time. Kevin does not hold back & really opens up about some of the nuttiest things he did as a kid during his numerous adventures through Claymont, Delaware & its surrounding areas. He verbally maps out locations & what was going on at the time so that the reader can envision the surroundings of some of the stomping grounds & scenes of silly shenanigans that occurred frequently in these pages. Throughout the book there are neat little side bars about pop culture of the day & other miscellaneous trivia. To say this book is funny would be an understatement. It had me laughing repeatedly & often left me smiling. This is a rare example of a book that is genuinely fun to read, puts real life in the present on pause, & rewinds everything back to the days when kids could always find a way to get into some mischievous excitement. This book really is timeless & brought forth a flash flood of memories growing up getting into goofy adventures in southeastern Pennsylvania & Delaware in the 80’s & 90’s. I thought I was the only guy with some of these types of insane happenings & outrageous acquaintances in their past, but Kevin experienced a lot of the same things & then some… & some more... a real wild ride.

By ELP I know there are many of these "hack" books out there, so I wasn't sure how good this one would be. But you know what? This book is what a "hack" book should be. It has a ton of great and valuable information in a short amount of space. Not sure of the things you'll need while camping or what you'll need to know how to do? It's all here in checklists and bullet-point lists. I especially liked the "Know How" chapter. It had concise info on emergencies, getting lost, how to start a fire, etc. Overall, this is a well-written camping guide.

By Richard Stevens For someone who is looking to get started camping this book has given me a great starter's guide of what's required before I head out for my first venture. Plenty of detail, including ideas of good spots to go, what to expect, and activities to do (far too numerous to list)..The most useful section for me was chapter 2 which was a thorough checklist for me to tick off before I head off. I may also have to take chapter 5 with me in case of emergencies. HahaThe free backpacking guide was also great in giving me a good idea on what to wear and what food to bring on my longer journey. A great supplementary book.

When my husband died at age 31 I joined the young widow club. No one wants to be a member of this club. As I worked my way through day to day of raising a child I was worried that I wasn't being the "right kind of widow". Was I too happy to soon? How long should I wear my wedding ring? How many trips to the cemetery is too many? I received much unwanted advise from well-meaning friends and family but none of it seemed right to me. I tried to find books to read but they all seemed to be written on dead and dying and were written my men. What did they know about being a young widow? With encouragement from my counselor I decided to write my own book. I wanted to tackle many topics that I knew were a bit off beat and maybe others were asking the same questions. I didn't want to burden anyone with a long book. I wanted a quick read and want the readers to feel like they're just talking with a friend about a tough subject. The premise of this book is that you'll read how I got through this terrible situation but you'll find nuggets that you can apply to yourself or a friend. Don't let anyone tell you have to grieve a certain way. It's all individual. I learned this the hard way. You don't have to wear black to be a "good" widow; you can wear lime green and still honor your love while moving on with your life.

The Difference a Day Makes (Perfect, Indiana), by Barbara Longley

From Booklist On the night his drinking and playing Russian roulette would have turned deadly, army war veteran Ryan Malloy gets a phone call from his former lieutenant asking if he’d like to come work for his American-heritage furniture company in Perfect, Indiana. Because he knows he's in a dangerous spiral, Ryan accepts. Meanwhile, his lieutenant's sister, Paige Langford, is fired from her first job when her boyfriend at the firm sabotages her. Licking her wounds, she flees to Perfect and her brother. When Paige and Ryan meet, sparks fly, but both resist because their self-esteem is at rock bottom. As they get to know each other and work at the furniture company together, however, their attraction and their sense of self-worth build. Longley successfully attacks issues associated with returning veterans as well as those commonly associated with finding oneself as an adult and recognizing true love. Neither Ryan nor Paige can truly be there for the other until both dispel their demons and become whole. — Pat Henshaw

Review "In this tender, emotional addition to the Love from the Heartland trilogy, Longley tackles the issue of veterans struggling to reintegrate into society ...The settings and the characters are described with such enthusiasm, it's obvious the author spent many hours trying to capture their essence entirely." —RT Book Reviews, 4 stars

About the Author As a child, Barbara Longley moved frequently, learning early on how to entertain herself with stories. Adulthood didn’t tame her peripatetic ways: she has lived on an Appalachian commune, taught on an Indian reservation, and traveled the country from coast to coast. After having children of her own, she decided to try staying put, choosing Minnesota as her home. By day, she puts her master’s degree in special education to use teaching elementary school. By night, she explores all things mythical, paranormal, and newsworthy, channeling what she learns into her writing.

18 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Another Perfect (Indiana) story By Constantreader This is the second sweet romance taking place in Perfect, Indiana. Like the first, it's about a war veteran with PTSD who's trying to cope with life after recovering from his physical injuries. Ryan Malloy went into the army to cope with a tragedy in his life, and then had the experience of being one of the few survivors of a suicide bomber. In despair and at the end of his rope, he suddenly gets a call from his former lieutenant, Noah Langford (the hero of the first book) offering him a job. He jumps at the chance and comes to Perfect. Noah's sister, Paige, has just lost her job in Philadelphia after a betrayal by her boyfriend, and arrives in Perfect just in time to see Ryan at his worst. The two connect, but Paige's ambitions seem to limit any relationship between them. Paige and Ryan are interesting people and the romance between them is an enjoyable read. While this is a pleasant romance, however, it suffers in comparison to the first in the series. For one thing, the story is very similar, without some of the more original character touches in the first book. What's also missing are the involving secondary characters in the town of Perfect, which gave that story more depth. Longley has a knack for giving dimension even to characters only seen briefly so that we want to see more of them. I suppose that makes this a backward compliment in that I felt cheated of those people I expected to see more of. There is another book planned, and hopefully more of the folks of Perfect will show up in it. All in all, I'd recommend this one as pleasant, if unoriginal.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. too much sex By tomby there was far too much sex content that took away from a book that could have been far more enjoyable. The story line was good.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Unlike others I was not impressed - at all - an average book at best By tim can Unfortunately I guess I expected too much and it is a typical romance. Fluff content and an unlikely, happily ever after ending. Come on - how many of those abusing alcohol magically quit when they go to a VA counselor? Statistically only 15 percent of drinkers successfully stop and then it is usually the battle of their lives.PTSD is not so easily treated, I am sorry to say and it does not go away just because you have someone who loves you - if it did it would not be such an issue with those who return from war to their loved ones. I suppose with such a novel you are supposed to check your brain at the door and enjoy - sorry I couldn't.The author begins in suicidal contemplations rather than giving the reader any reason to care about the character first. The author also built sexual tension to a high level and then utterly failed in the sex scenes to bring it to any conclusion. Sex is supposed to alter charaters in the story and it didn't in this book - in fact they had sex so early that what could have been a life altering act was simply wasted lust. Compared to the sexual tension created the sex is anticlimatic and disappointing.I guess I am just not suited for such "romance" novels. I expect the same quality writing as any other book and here they are clearly lackingI was provided a free coy in exchange for my review.

Memphis blues and rock legend writes about a long career that involved close associations with Joe Cocker, Leon Russell, George Harrison, Freddie King, Furry Lewis, John Mayall, and many others

When Don Nix began his career, he was still in high school. Over time the Mark-Keys evolved into Booker T. and the MGs. As a producer and musician Nix worked with Freddie King, Furry Lewis, Lonnie Mack, Albert King, Delaney, Bonnie * Friends, the Staple Singers, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and many others. He was asked by Beatle George Harrison to organize the 1971 Bangladesh Concert at Madison Square Garden. Nix's stories of living at George Harrison's mansion in England make for exciting reading. In 1971 Nix organized a touring band named the Alabama State Troupers, featuring Wayne Perkins, Clayton Ivey, Fred Prouty, bluesman Furry Lewis, singer Jeanie Green and the Mount Zion Band and Choir. Their music was a brilliant mix of southern rock and roll, blues and gospel.

Memphis is where rock & roll started & Don was there to witness & experience it first hand. But his book doesn't stop there....his stories about Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Leon Russell & many of the top artists from around the world make this an excellent read.Anyone who has ever heard any of the songs Don has written knows he is a great writer, but this book shows another side of his talent. I hope he writes a 2nd book.guy miller

While I did have some very limited experiences with music in Memphis, I really wasn't sure I would enjoy this book. I could not put it down until I finished it and I really loved it. Don certainly can tell a story - maybe as well as he can create music. I really recommend this to anyone interested in music but I suspect most anyone would enjoy this book.

I was lucky enough to be in the business part of the music industry during the latter part of this time period. These are some of the best memories of my life. But Don Nix was there from the beginning and is still going strong. Absolutely fascinating life to be there for the birth of that great Memphis sound, then grow into an international writer, producer, arranger for some of the best music legends in the world. I will treasure his book. And to anyone who has the desire to know how it all started, don't miss this must read recollection of a wonderful musician and man.
