About the Author Tom Spears earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from Purdue University and a Masters in Business Administration from Harvard University. He spent twenty-seven years working for four U.S.-based public Corporations. During fifteen of those years he held the title of President or Group President. Tom retired from his last Group President position in 2010 to pursue his interest in writing fiction. He consults occasionally, having expertise in manufacturing, engineering, pricing, strategy, and corporate politics. Tom lives with his wife and seven children in Ashland, Nebraska.

Where Michael Crichton left off with “Disclosure”, Spears has followed with his six novels. His latest “Empowered” blends with Spears experience as a senior corporate executive along with his ability to create a solid plot with characters immersed with tension, that only a veteran of corporate life would understand, along with danger and the accompanying terror.Young 33 year old Colin Jensen acquires the dream position as the president of ThuePhase Chemicals, a division of a company owned by an investment group waiting to put the company on the market. Personally I did not like this character from the beginning to the end, but such is life in corporate American today.Beginning his new role, Jensen decides to play the role of an undercover boss working in the warehousing section of the company so that he could learn the good, bad and ugly of his division. Oh, this is bringing back bad memories of working in the production/warehousing department of a major corporation after working in a position in the corporate headquarters. Dark as it is, it is reality, although in this situation, the new disguised president finds criminal activity abound. And with criminal activity, there is danger.What to do about the criminal activity? Well, you need to read the book, but you will not be disappointed. This is, after all, a corporate thriller. Perhaps one of the best from author Spears, although for this reader his thriller “Incentivize” is a read that I still think about!

The book worked well with two parallel plot lines that come together for a surprising conclusion. A retrospective on corporate politics from Colin, the main character, and his former mentor provide a timely juxtaposition to the current mess that he has gotten himself into. Unpredictable and filled with biting commentary on corporate life, the book was hard to put down and kept me guessing throughout.
