A Conversation with Sarah Girrell and Elisa Lorello For most people, it’s hard to imagine writing a novel, let alone writing a novel with someone else. But for Elisa Lorello and Sarah Girrell, writing together was as natural as a coffee and cream. Being such good writing partners and friends, they decided to ask each other about what it was really like to share the text, their favorite (and not-so-favorite) characters, and how their own relationships influenced their work. Sarah Girrell: I’m curious, where did you do most of your writing for Why I Love Singlehood?Elisa Lorello: The most uninteresting space ever: my lap. I don’t have an official "writing space" in my apartment, so it’s wherever I take my laptop. Some days I’m sprawled out on my bed, others I’m sitting Indian-style on my couch. Whenever I need a change of scenery (which is often), I take my laptop to one of the local coffee shops. I like to write somewhere with windows. For me, the occasional staring out a window is an important part of the writing process.
Sarah: None of the places I wrote were that nice, either. When we first started working on the novel I was still in medical school so I did my writing in one of two cubicles in the library computer lab at school (upstairs from the cadavers--nothing classy or very comfortable about that). Then I used to wake up early (sometimes as early as 5 a.m. or so) and write. Towards the end I wrote pretty much anywhere any time--usually at the table or on the couch.
Elisa: I’ve talked to friends who are both single and married, and they’re really intrigued by Why I Love Singlehood’s premise and theme. Being married, did you struggle with that at all?
Sarah: I get asked this a lot, and the answer is no, it was never an issue. Actually, the question makes me giggle a little. It reminds me of this great story about Alan Alda, a well-known Democrat, being asked how it feels to play a Republican presidential candidate on "The West Wing" and if it was "a stretch." He answered, "I've played murderers too--no one ever asks me if that's a stretch."
Elisa: For me it reinforced my own acceptance of my singlehood, and it was fun to write something that ultimately celebrated being single rather than demonize it.
Sarah: What didn't you expect from the story? Is there anything that took you a while to warm up to or see? I know I identified more with some characters than others, and never really knew what to expect in terms of a resolution--especially when it came to Eva’s love life.
Elisa: Oh, good question! For starters, I didn’t expect Beulah to become someone who plays such an important role in Eva’s maturity and development. And she does it so under the radar, which I love. I also didn’t expect to fall in love with both Norman and Kenny as hard as I did. That brings up an interesting point, by the way. How do you answer when people ask who did what when it came to the writing?
Sarah: You mean did we alternate chapters or only write certain characters? It’s funny, before working on Why I Love Singlehood, when I read co-authored pieces my mind boggled at the thought. How could they do it? Literally, how did they do it? In retrospect, I’m still not sure how others do it, but I can’t imagine writing Why I Love Singlehood any other way than our constant rhythm of emailing a drafted scene piece by piece--sometimes ending midsentence--back and forth as each one of us edited and reworded and added. It gave us an automatic audience, immediate feedback, a fresh set of eyes, a reality check, and a way out whenever we felt stuck.
Elisa: And there wasn’t much organization to that, although toward the end we divvied up certain scenes between us; but even then, although one person may have predominantly drafted a scene, the other’s fingerprints were all over it.
About the Author Elisa Lorello was born and raised on Long Island, the youngest of seven children. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth and launched a career teaching rhetoric and composition. In addition to teaching, Elisa wrote the Kindle best-selling novels Faking It and Ordinary World, Why I Love Singlehood (co-authored with Sarah Girrell), and Adulation. After six years in North Carolina, she has recently returned to the northeast.

34 of 35 people found the following review helpful. Humdrum story that is excellently written By akb--bookworm Eva (pronounced AY-vah, not EE-vah) is a 33 year-old single lady and proud of it. So proud, she decides to blog about it and creates WILS, Why I Love Singlehood. Eva owns her own coffee shop in a college town after leaving academia shortly after being dumped by the love of her life, Shaun. She surrounds herself with work, baking, and a large cast of friends, regulars at her coffee shop, and her sister who lives states away. After Eva learns that her ex has moved on and is engaged, she realizes she's just been stagnant hoping he'd come back to her. Eva decides it's time to jump back into the world of dating.WHY I LOVE SINGLEHOOD wasn't a bad story, there just wasn't a whole lot to pull me forward. It was easy to put down and pick up again in a day or two. The story was of Eva's quest for happiness. No matter what she does, she's not truly happy and not sure why nor how to fix it. Will she be happy by throwing a book at the head of her ex? Will she be happy if her ex comes crawling back? Will she be happy in the arms of another man? Is she REALLY happy being single? Where will she find her happiness? Although the story was believable and rang true, it seemed almost too real life to be any fun to read. I know that sounds ridiculous, but it felt like I was reading a diary/journal about a 33 year-old woman who never learned to love herself go about her day to day business.There are great things about the book. Everything was exceptionally written, which is a huge plus. The cast of characters surrounding Eva are diverse and engaging. Love is all around Eva in so many forms, platonic, familial, religious, and sexual. I thoroughly enjoyed the blog posts on WILS, but there weren't many: I think there were only a total of 7 or 8 in a 364 page book. The few blog posts really had a way of hitting things on the head with humor and candor. It's too bad there weren't more.All in all, it was a good story. I did enjoy it, but I don't see myself picking it up again. Just be warned this is NOT a romance or a romantic comedy. I'm not even sure if it qualifies as chick-lit.

By Amazon Customer I hadn't read a good old fashioned chick lit book in awhile so I was fairly excited when I received this book in the mail. The premise seemed promising, single girl writes a blog detailing her trials while wading through date after date, but it just fell short of interesting for me. While not a bad book, it just wasn't a book I'm going to go back and re-read for years to come, nor will I even remember the plot in a week.Eva leaves the safe world of academia to pursue her dream of owning her own bakery/coffee shop. She finds a nice little niche for herself amongst her regular customers but still feels some dissatisfaction from her love life. While everyone around her is pairing up she feels happy being single and starts a blog entitled "Why I Love Being Single." The blog unfortunately only is empowering on the single front for the first few entries and then Eva starts dating and finds herself in a relationship.I had high hopes for this book being humorous, especially during the speed dating scenes and her foray into the world of internet dating, but what could have been some very funny moments instead were very mainstream and boring. I wanted to root for Eva on her quest to find love but instead, about halfway through the book I found her to be kind of conceited (there is a point where she is convinced that there is a club of men that come into her coffee shop that all have crushes on her.) I was also very frustrated with Eva still dwelling on her ex for most of the book.Overall I would say that this would be a good read if you've exhausted your supply of chick lit novels and are desperate for anything to read. I didn't like this book, yet I didn't hate it, it was just kind of there.

She loves her work - she owns and runs The Grounds, a funky coffee shop in a college town - and she loves having the freedom to spend time with her friends and make her own rules. She's so happy to be single that she starts a blog titled "Why I Love Singlehood." However, once she learns of her ex's recent engagement, she decides its time to at least dip her toe into the dating scene. So begins a journey through online dating, speed dating, and she even gets involved with one of The Grounds' regular customers. It soon begins clear to Eva that she must decide who exactly she is and what exactly she's looking for in a partner or this dating thing will never go her way.I enjoyed Elisa Lorello's two previous novels, Faking It and Ordinary World so I was more than happy to pick up a copy of this collaborative novel. I'm happy to report that Why I Love Singlehood is another fun, engaging chick lit novel with a ton of heart, just like Lorello's other novels.Eva is a character that most women will find easy to relate to. She's had some bad luck when it comes to love - the relationship she thought would end in marriage didn't work - but she's not wallowing in self-pity. Instead, she's looking to the bright side of things, enjoying the wonderful aspects of her life, and relishing in the fact that she can enjoy being single. I appreciated that she acknowledged that a person doesn't have to be in a relationship to be happy, and that just because someone is in a relationship doesn't necessarily mean they are happy - this is something most chick lit novels do not admit.Eva's foray into the dating scene provides many hilarious moments for the reader, and also some heartwarming ones. Some of her adventures were quite entertaining, and I must admit to really enjoying being along for this ride.The ending of the novel was a bit predictable, but satisfying all the same. Eva does go through quite a bit of introspection and self-analysis before finally setting on the right guy for her, and while she does find something resembling love in the end, the lessons she learned about herself are a huge part of the resolution as well.I'm happy to have picked up Why I Love Singlehood and would definitely recommend it for fans of chick lit type novels.
