Daphne and Thekla by Jonna-Lynn Mandelbaum Daphne and Thekla is an imaginative, well-researched, and beautifully written work of historical fiction based on the legendary Thekla, a Christian figure of the first century. Based on The Acts of Paul and Thekla, a scripture not accepted into the Bible, this book is a powerful portrait of friendship, of faith, and of women transcending the boundaries of their time and culture. In first-century Roman society, an arena that is particularly oppressive for women, Thekla has even more challenges than most. Her own mother wants her dead for fleeing an arranged marriage, and later a civic leader tries to have her killed―torn apart by wild animals―because she thwarted his attempt at rape. Rather than destroying her, these horrendous experiences strengthen Thekla to develop her own spiritual insights. She becomes a follower of the Apostle Paul, who eventually acknowledges her as an apostle, too. Jonna-Lynn Mandelbaum’s book follows this extraordinary woman as she breaks from her prescribed role in society, takes charge of her own destiny, and embarks on a truly remarkable life.

By Sandy Cody I have read other books by Jonna-Lynn and have always been impressed with how she incorporates true events with bits of fiction interspersed. She has an expertise for historical information and filling in the gaps with her own creative storytelling. Many of us have heard of the apostle Paul, but are not as familiar with Thekla, his faith-filled follower. From the first page to the very last, the reader is captivated with the journey Thekla sets herself upon to escape her mother's awful clutches, death by fire and an arena of wild animals. Daphne, a friend of Thekla's father who has strong maternal instincts to protect, is so taken by Thekla's cause to locate Paul and learn from his teachings. Together, the women draw strength from each other to go beyond societal norms of the 1st Century. Jonna-Lynn has a perfect balance of dialogue along with narration to keep this story flowing and have the reader captivated for what's coming up next.

Unique story about a fascinating friendship By Susan C Sims A well-researched and vivid exploration into the life of Thekla, an extra-biblical figure of both legend and history. Daphne, as her fictional mentor, is an equally interesting character, and in their relationship, we get a glimpse into the challenges associated with being a woman in first-century Roman society. You really get a strong sense of what it was like in that time and place through detailed description.

It isn't easy, and it leads to an unusual alliance between two women who both live outside the expected norms of the day but firmly within their own circle of belief.
