The life and death-defying feats of Alex Honnold, a visionary climber of the sort that comes along only once in a generation.

Only a few years ago, Alex Honnold was little known beyond a small circle of hardcore climbers. Today, at the age of thirty, he is probably the most famous adventure athlete in the world. In that short time, he has proven his expertise in many styles of climbing and has shattered speed records, pioneered routes, and won awards within each discipline. More spectacularly still, he has pushed the most extreme and dangerous form of climbing far beyond the limits of what anyone thought was possible.

Free soloing, Honnold’s specialty, is a type of climbing performed without a rope, a partner, or hardware―such as pitons, nuts, or cams―for aid or protection. The results of climbing this way are breathtaking, but the stakes are ultimate: if you fall, you die.

In Alone on the Wall, Honnold recounts the seven most astonishing climbing achievements so far in his meteoric and still-evolving career. He narrates the drama of each climb, along with reflective passages that illuminate the inner workings of his highly perceptive and discerning mind. We share in the jitters and excitements he feels waking in his van (where he lives full time) before a climb; we see him self-criticize in his climbing journal (a veritable bible for students of the sport); and we learn his secrets to managing fear―his most enviable talent. Veteran climber and award-winning author David Roberts writes part of each chapter in his own voice, and he calls on other climbers and the sport’s storied past to put Alex's tremendous accomplishments in perspective.

Whenever Honnold speaks in public, he is asked the same two questions: "Aren't you afraid you're going to die?" and "Why do you do this?" Alone on the Wall takes us around the world and through the highs and lows in the life of a climbing superstar to answer those fascinating questions. Honnold's extraordinary life, and his idiosyncratic worldview, have much to teach us about risk, reward, and the ability to maintain a singular focus, even in the face of extreme danger.

Alone on the Wall, by Alex Honnold

Review “Honnold is the biggest name in a group of adventure athletes engaging in high-risk live action-sports spectacles that seem to be pulled from the Evel Knievel playbook.” (Grayson Schaffer - Outside)“Honnold has free-soloed the longest, most challenging climbs ever. Most peculiar of all, even to elite rock climbers, Honnold does this without apparent fear, as if falling were not possible.” (Daniel Duane - New York Times Magazine)“Alex is really the first climber to rise from the margins of this lonely fringe sport to become a kind of celebrity.” (Josh Dean - Men's Health)“Alex Honnold's climbing feats are astonishing. They are also absolutely horrifying. Reading about some of his ascents made me physically ill. As this riveting book makes clear, however, Honnold is neither crazy nor reckless. Alone on the Wall reveals him to be an utterly unique and extremely appealing young man.” (Jon Krakauer, author of Into the Wild, Into Thin Air, and Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town)

About the Author Alex Honnold is a world-class American rock climber best known for his free solo ascents of big walls.David Roberts is the author of, most recently The Lost World of the Old Ones, among twenty-six books about mountaineering, exploration, adventure, and Western history and anthropology.

If I get an adrenaline rush, it means that something has gone horribly wrong.” -Alex HonnoldAlone on the Wall is a phenomenal book from a phenomenal adventurer. I first learned of Alex Honnold's feats of climbing through the short film by the same name as this book. This book provides a deeper look into the journey that brought him to the public spotlight and the epic feats of adventuring he has completed since. It's incredibly inspiring to read in detail these accounts of Alex's ascents, link-ups, and expeditions. I was pumped every day that I was reading the book & got in lots of hiking and gym climbing. The book worked well with two authors. The narration alternates between italicized sections where Alex accounts his climbs first hand and the general text written by David Roberts that provides a third party perspective to the full spectrum of Alex's story. David also tied in key snippets of information about Alex from his climbing films, historical context for the climbing accomplishments, and enough technical explanation to allow even non-climbers to enjoy the narrative.KINDLE READERS: Locations 3170-3252 are stunning photos! I was so gripped by the story I did not even notice the photos until reaching the end of the text, at which point I flipped slowly through them with mouth slightly agape.FINAL TAKE: Highly recommended to all who want inspiration to elevate their dreams and continue pushing their personal adventures."I think of all the people who inspired me as a kid, and I sort of realize they were all normal people, too. I just do my normal life, and if people choose to be inspired by the things I’m doing, then I’m glad they’re getting something out of it.” - Alex Honnold

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Falls short. Pun intended. By Keith Mc Alex is a god, but this book is boring af after the first couple of chapters. He just doesn't have much interesting to say after he tries his best to describe his motivations and thought process. Also, most of what is detailed in the book has been repeated verbatim in the short videos produced by Sender, The North Face and Vice Sports. Certainly watching Alex climb for 20 minutes is far more inspiring than reading 300 pages about each pitch. Just search Alex on YouTube and you will find far more than this book can offer. Anyone with even a minor familiarity with climbing with grow impatient with the constant explanations of the sport's jargon and the photos in the center of the book are poorly curated, poorly captioned and don't particularly help facilitate getting to know Alex or project the beauty of his climbing.

First of all, the format of the book is easy to follow with two narratives, one of Alex and one of the co-author, D. Robert. At first, I wondered why Alex chose this format as he already writes decently. Then, I realized this format provided a third person perspective for the readers to appreciate the gravity of some of the accomplishment. Alex's choice of co-author definitely was superb - I have read several D. Robert's books, always enjoyed them. Secondly, aside from the obvious (but still thrilling) climbing accomplishment/adventure, Alex's sense of humor really came through. The book was very entertaining to read! Finally, I think anyone who appreciates athleticism/adventure, climber or not (I have climbed but am not an avid climber), will enjoy this book for a lot of the "lessons" are universal. A side note, I really appreciate Alex's downplaying on those "lessons" - he doesn't overstate them, but really just tells a story and lets the readers decipher whatever apply to them. It is not "preachy", even though it still inspires the audience.
