Robert Trivers is a living legend in biology and the social sciences, a man the Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker calls ''one of the great thinkers in the history of Western thought" and Time magazine named one of the greatest scientists and thinkers of the 20th Century. His theories on the evolutionary tensions between parent and offspring, sibling and sibling, man and woman, friend and friend, and a person and himself or herself have not only revolutionized genetics and evolutionary biology but have influenced disciplines from medicine and the social sciences to history, economics, and literary studies. But unlike other renowned scientists, Trivers has spent time behind bars, drove a getaway car for Huey P. Newton, and founded an armed group in Jamaica to protect gay men from mob violence. Now, in the entertaining tradition of Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman, Trivers tell us in his inimitable voice about the inimitable life behind the revolutionary science. He comments with irreverent wit and penetrating insight on everything from American racism to the history of psychiatry to who killed Peter Tosh, musical heir to Bob Marley. Sprinkled with anecdotes about such luminaries as Richard Dawkins and Stephen Jay Gould, and with photographs throughout, this volume is sure to enlighten and entertain anyone with an interest in science, the human condition, or the nature of creative genius.

By Gordon McQueen Maybe some people enjoy stories about the Jamaican criminal underclass, but half way through the book I realised I'm not one of them. Pointless guff.saved from one star by the last chapter and other takes on other biologists. Most distressingly are some of Trivers ridiculous theories, such as the idea that Jamaica has high a murder rate because evidence rots quickly in the tropics, even as he mentions that another bit of the country is well policed and doesn't have a high murder rate. And what about Singapore? It's enough to make a person look anew and askance at some of his better known theories, such as his theory of self deception; the idea that we are better able to fool others if we are thorough going "method" actors, and which in addition to being methodologically disentangleable if taken seriously implies that being deluded about reality has a greater survival value than verisimilitude. On the other hand, the depth of his revolutionary politics is revealing (Trivers is strangely loathe to criticise characters of extreme violence). Self deception theory in this sense can be seen as a reworking of revolutionay ideas about "false consciouness" as a manifestation of class interest. Substitute genetic interest for class interest and self deception theory is born. Is this right? Who knows? Trivers tells us barely a thing about his intellectual processes.

By artemis Read it if you want to know the real deal about Jamaica, not just about Trivers' remarkable (and often times crazy) life as a genius scientist and renegade. You're not going to find anyone else telling it like it is about Jamaica, the good, the bad and the ugly.

His foundational ideas have had a lot of power in shaping my views about human nature and life in general. I really enjoyed reading this very personal account of a life with much drama and insight. Trivers lays himself bare with an honesty he has probably cultivated after decades of studying self-deception. The insight into the wacky Jamaican life and the human behavior he witnessed there was likely as important a form of field research as the lizards he went there to study.
