What does a man do when he arrives at a place in his career where he is doing what he always wanted to do, only to find that he really wanted something more? In his mid-thirties Kenneth Howell was teaching in a Protestant seminary after nine years of Presbyterian ministry. After receiving the highest degree possible in his field, he was exactly where he wanted to be. The future looked very bright. But two nagging questions wouldn’t let him alone. Is what he believes really true? Does he really understand what it means to be a Christian? And the second: is this all there is to being a Christian? Could there be a deeper spirituality out there that he had not yet encountered? Those questions kept Kenneth Howell up at night. He tried to avoid, ignore, and suppress them, but they wouldn’t go away. He was faced with a tough choice. Either pursue the truth and the God of all truth with integrity and zeal, or sit back into a comfortable life of familiar places and familiar faces. He decided that he really had no choice. It was all or nothing. As he tried to answer these questions, Kenneth Howell began to find life more difficult, not easier. His pursuit of truth, goodness, and love gradually led him into a world he had only vaguely glimpsed from afar. It was a world filled with things he had always longed for. It was the fullness of truth.

Review "In a tightly-written narrative that feeds the mind and heart, Dr. Howell carefully leads readers through the penetrating series of questions - and their unexpected answers - that moved him to resign his position as a Presbyterian minister and seminary professor to seek the fullness of Christian life and faith...in Christ's Catholic Church." -- Amazon User Review "Endorsement"

About the Author "Kenneth J. Howell is Resident Theologian of the Coming Home Network International. Dr. Howell taught in higher education for almost thirty years, most recently for over a decade as a Professor of Religion at the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) where he taught classes on the history, theology, and philosophy of Catholicism. At the same time he served as the Director of the Institute of Catholic Thought of the St. John s Catholic Newman Center at the same university. Dr. Howell was a Presbyterian minister for eighteen years and a theological professor for seven years in a Protestant seminary where he taught Hebrew, Greek, and Latin as well as biblical interpretation and the history of Christianity. During his ministry and teaching, Dr. Howell s own reading on the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist started him on a six-year journey that eventually led him to Catholicism. On June 1, 1996, Dr. Howell was confirmed and received into the Catholic Church at St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Bloomington, Indiana. In 2000, he received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice award from John Paul II in recognition of his service to the Church (the lay equivalent of the title Monsignor). Kenneth Howell has been married to Sharon Canfield for forty years and they have three children. Rebekah, their oldest daughter, lives with her husband, John, in Champaign, Illinois. Their son Colin and his wife live in Rome, Italy. Their youngest daughter Rachel lives in Champaign. They have six grandchildren. Dr. Howell has authored dozens of articles and seven books."

A conversion speaking to both mind and heart By Shane Kapler Dr. Kenneth Howell's conversion story, "Something Greater Is Here," is an absolute page-turner. (It arrived in the mail yesterday afternoon and, once I started reading, I couldn't go to bed before reaching the conclusion.)You are undoubtedly familiar with Dr. Howell from his work with the Coming Home Network and Catholic Answers, as well as the courageous stand he took for academic freedom as an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois. Here, however, Dr. Howell recounts the many graces that readied him to serve God in this capacity. In a tightly-written narrative that feeds the mind and heart, Dr. Howell carefully leads readers through the penetrating series of questions - and their unexpected answers - that moved him to resign his position as a Presbyterian minister and seminary professor to seek the fullness of Christian life and faith (the "something greater") in Christ's Catholic Church.Conversion stories typically focus upon a few key issues - e.g., Scripture and Tradition, the Papacy, the Eucharist. What stands out about Dr. Howell's story is the vast range of issues it allows him to explore with readers: the necessity of faith and reason; the Catholic Church's appreciation of scientific method; the absence of a biblical hermeneutic within the texts of Scripture (and subsequent need for Tradition); the sacrificial reality of the Eucharist and Christ's substantial presence therein; apostolic succession and the ordained priesthood; the ongoing nature of justification; the papacy; and redemptive suffering.Hans Urs Von Balthasar said that theology is best done on one's knees, best done in prayer. It is an apt description of Dr. Howell's journey. He is a man of true spiritual depth, a quality arrived at through decades of sharing Christ's prayer in Gethsemane. I was completely unaware that his wife's conversion to Catholicism came years after his own; that they cared for their oldest child through a protracted illness; or that in 1995, while teaching a course at Indiana University, Dr. Howell was shot (and the shooter never apprehended). I consider the peace that permeates Dr. Howell's writing a proof of the power of Christ, crucified and risen; it should instill hope in each of us.In times like ours, when relativism is the creed of the majority, and persecution seems perched on the horizon, Dr. Kenneth Howell reminds us that "Something Greater Is Here" - Christ in the midst of His Church - and that the powers of hell cannot prevail against them.

Vost Something Greater is Here is a rich, fast-moving description of a decades-long thoughtful, prayerful, and very eventful journey toward the home of the Catholic Church. Dr. Howell's love for Christ, fellow Christians, Christianity, and the fullness of truth is apparent in every page.I was familiar with some of Dr. Howell's trials and tribulations that had become a public matter five years ago after he had presented Catholic doctrines on natural law and sexuality at the Newman Center of a major state university, and was fascinated to read how that story played out in the life of the man at the center of the controversy. This entire story of his ongoing conversion is equally fascinating, and what really rings through to me is the author's relentless pursuit of the truth of the Catholic Church and his charitable love and respect for the people and institutions of various non-Catholic Christian denominations that played a huge role in his spiritual development and personal story. Interesting too is how all these sorrowful and joyful events affected his wife and the rest of his family. Though every story of every journey home to the Catholic Church shares some common elements, each is unique and intriguing in its own way. Dr. Howell's story is particularly striking one, told so well and so graciously.Something Greater is Here is a must read for anyone on the journey toward joining the Catholic Church and for anyone who is simply curious about how the Catholic Church and its teachings and traditions could persuade a Protestant minister and holder of two Ph.D.s (in Linguistics and in the History of Christianity and Science) to give up his pastoral and professorial livelihoods to eventually join it and its great Communion of Saints. Something Greater is Here is also a must-read for every Catholic who would seek to reignite his love for Christ and the Church through the author's contagious enthusiasm for something greater -- for the truth, beauty, and goodness of the Catholic Church that Christ gave us.

Holmes I purchased this from CHResources as part of a charitable donation, but I thought it was a very interesting and enlightening book, especially with regards the differences between Protestant and Catholic teachings on justification and sanctification.
