On a cold November morning a fourteen year old paperboy was delivering his route when he saw a brightly wrapped package on the roof of a parked car. Curiosity got the best of him and when he picked it up it exploded, killing him instantly. This is the true story of the investigation of his murder and numerous other related murders which occurred over a fifteen year span. It shows how investigators were able to link the murders to one man, a motorcycle gang enforcer.

This story provides a comprehensive look into the criminal justice system and reveals not only it’s successes, but also it’s failures. From police officers to detectives to forensic experts to medical examiners to prosecuting attorneys to witnesses and even informants, everyone contributed. No one gave up!

It’s the story of how all the pieces were put together, the killer identified, and the case presented for prosecution. It also shows how one elected official became the biggest stumbling block to justice for all the victims.

And, being retired, he is willing to share stories about them and the people involved. After reading his book, I have to think that he is particularly willing to tell his story when he is really pissed off at how the legal system screwed one of cases right out of the water. "Justice Delayed" is one of those stories.I'm not going to spoil the story, which clearly deserves to be optioned by a major studio. I will, however, note that my reason for withholding the fifth star is the absolute shambles the editor made of the text. The author is a cop, and any editor worthy of that job description should know when to blue pencil exclamation marks. It's really criminal.Despite this flaw, Hinterthuer comes through with a truly first rate story. Highly recommended. For full disclosure, my mother suggested this book, and she lives near the author. She says he swears every word is true.

By Richard Farrow The story is factual, based on the experiences of a detective during his career of 29 years. It is down to earth, well written and a good read. The book seems to be a refreshingly honest account of the activities of some criminals and the efforts of the law enforcers to bring them to justice. True to life some investigations work out better than others. One unusual feature is the book is comprised of many short chapters, generally about 3 pages each. This does no harm to a book that I recommend as entertaining and easy to read. I read it over a week-end which is very unusual for me.The account leaves the reader with questions over the political aspects of the prosecution of criminals

By FJT I first became acquainted with the author some years ago at long distance (by E and phone) through a mutual friend we were assisting, and though we have never met, I felt that I knew something about him. However, after reading this, I can truly say that I learned a lot more than I had known or even suspected. When Roger first told me he was writing a memoir, I encouraged him to consider Kindle as I do most of my reading on E now. I am glad he took me up on it!First a few words about the author. Roger is, as noted, the "friend of a friend" and we have never met in person, though we have had a number of chats by E and phone over the years. At first acquaintance, he hardly seems to be the type to be a former hard-boiled detective who had worked on one of the longest and most difficult murder cases in his region. He is friendly, kind, and charitable, and is a musician who (as I learned from his book) originally had embarked on a musical career, playing and later teaching music - before embarking on a much grimmer career.I should also note that I am not usually a fan of police, detective, or mystery books or films, either fiction or non-fiction, and I read this book in spurts around my usual busy schedule. At first, I must admit that I started because of my personal knowledge of the author and a mild interest in his career. However, that soon turned to a deeper interest sparked by his plain, unadorned, and clearly factual recounting of one dedicated detective's attempts over a decade and a half (!) to solve a series of murders by a brazen killer, and his dogged determination not to let it go - even when his department and the system tried to get him to do so. Though the case often went cold and lay dormant, Roger never lost his desire to find, try, and convict a cold-blooded, ruthless, and utterly remorseless killer, who left a trail of bodies in his wake. After many years of stops, starts, and disappointments, and episodes and interactions of all kinds (both positive and negative) with local, state, and federal officers and officials (including incompetent, corrupt and downright criminal ones), Roger was finally able to collect enough "bits and pieces" of direct and peripheral evidence, testimony, and facts to mount an almost airtight case against the killer. What happened then was mind-blowing! While I won’t tell you the end, I will say it is well worth reading the whole story to get the entire picture.Roger left no stones unturned in telling the story to his readers, giving them “just the facts” (as his fictional predecessor, Sgt. Joe Friday used to say) - and he is obviously not afraid to let the chips fall where they may, while praising those who deserve it.This book is well worth a read, if only to remind us of the men and women across the nation who work long and hard to "serve and protect" - and to also remind us that while there are bad apples in almost every barrel, not all cops are bad or killers, and that many clearly, like Roger, take their oaths very seriously, and are honest, hard-working, and dedicated to trying to do a tough and often dirty and thankless job in a system that is often full of holes.
