After raising three husbands and a son, a hard-charging divorcee flees the suburban confines of Washington, D.C., for sunny Provence, where she falls in love with the local wines, a younger man and la vie boheme. Marcia Muir Mitchell tells all in "French Toast," a nakedly honest, sumptuously descriptive memoir about her often humorous, sometimes heart-breaking struggles to build a new life for herself in a picturesque village split between the old world and the new. Mitchell's affection for the arts inspired the move along with her love for an artist. Although she falls for his work before they meet, he more than meets her expectations. The relationship, however, alternates between rocky and sublime, as does Mitchell's on-going effort to adapt to the demands of a May-December romance. Though she spends time at her easel, Mitchell primarily paints with words. French cuisine, architecture, scenery–whatever meets her eye–come to vivid life as do the panoply of characters who dwell in this quaint corner of Southern France. Ultimately “French Toast” is much more than a memoir. It's also a love story, a travelogue and a cautionary reminder that one must suffer for one's art.

French Toast, by Marcia Muir MItchell

About the Author Marcia Muir Mitchell, an independent writer and creative director, traded a successful career in advertising for the life of an artist—sometimes a starving one—in the south of France. Her memoir, French Toast revisits her exploits, both romantic and enterprising, in the ancient Provencal village of Saignon. Marcia grew up in Atlanta and went to Brenau College for Women in Gainesville, Ga. She was reared to be a Southern Belle, but her parents’ stories and pictures of their French travels caught her fancy and after three husbands and seven jobs, she closed her business in Washington, D.C., and opened a new chapter in her life. Fourteen years later, Marcia returned to the U.S. with her cat, Raoul, and settled in Los Angeles near her son Ben Feldman, an actor. She adopted a rescue dog, Zoe. Though Zoe and Raoul speak different languages, they have no trouble understanding each other.

French Toast brought back good and funny memories of that time and fills in the gap since visiting with Marcia in her Potomac, Md. home. As I would expect, French Toast is well written. It is worth the read even if you don't know Marcia personally. I plan to give the book as gifts to two friends.

Full disclosure, I actually know Marcia & stayed in the village and setting where most of the book takes place. She has rendered events, environs and people with a sharp, honest, literary eye and every word she writes is true; I witnessed it firsthand. If you are nurturing a dream of life in a lovely Provencal village, read this first!
