By asetts “A Long Walk with Sally”Written by David Clark, JRA Loving Family, Golf, and a tragic life changing event all come together in David Clark Jr’s personal story of golf and the loss of his 19 year old daughter Sally, the sweet “sunshine” of his life.As a Father of a daughter, an avid golfer and traveler to the British Isles, I could not wait to open this book. I have read many golf and travel books including the Jim Dodson story,” Final Rounds: A Father, A Son, The Golf Journey Of A Lifetime,” an experience overseas he shares with his Dad prior to his death. Yet, the thought of a man traveling overseas to walk great courses in search of peace with his daughter’s tragic death would be a perspective that I was not at all prepared for. With that understatement, I could not fight back the tears in several chapters as Mr. Clark shared his most intimate feelings and deepest hurts. Many golfers, including myself, have stood on the 18th tee at Lahinch and tried to ignore the left side of that hole, despite it being the shorter way home. No one has ever stood on that tee after 71 other very meaningful holes, on four trying golf courses and could feel the pressure Mr. Clark was feeling on that final tee box. I kept hearing the voice in my head say over and over, “FIND IT DAVID, FIND IT!” The emotional pendulum was heavy and in constant motion.Throughout the book, Mr. Clark shares his family’s struggles and his personal wishes for both his family and himself in a style convincing you that he has it covered and that he will “figure it out” with Jo and the others. The others in his life played significant roles at key times and as Mr. Clark realized on his long walk, he truly was not alone! The golf course list was very impressive and well explained in the book. Mr. Clark didn’t just rely on the “experts” and the popular two or three guide books; he literally went everywhere he felt he needed to go in his quest. I wish the two closing chapters of photos were captioned, especially the golf trip photos. Some of these shots looked familiar or enticing and some screamed out “great story” and maybe someday I will have a chance to walk in to Mr. Clark’s life and he will share one or two of them. Thank you again David for sharing this story.

Most importantly, David Clark's story of the tragic loss of his daughter Sally is a well-written and compelling account of how he and his wife Jo dealt with the sudden death of his daughter at the hands of a drunk driver. As others who have experienced the death of a child can attest, such a death is about the hardest to deal with, particularly when the death seems so senseless. David acknowledges that his faith in Christ was instrumental in pulling him through his darkest hours. At the same time, he found a unique way of working through the emotions over a period of several years. An avid and accomplished golfer, David, who had always loved playing the links courses in the British Isles, set out to play every links course in Great Britain and Ireland. This task took him several years, made more difficult in part by the continued discovery of new link course as well as by questions as to what exactly counts as a link course. When he finally achieved his goal, David had played close to 300 courses, some of them in heavy rain. Sensing that he has Sally with him every step of the way, he finally reconciles himself to Sally's death and to God's purpose in taking her.David Clark's story should prove fascinating for everyone, particularly for those who have experienced the loss of a child. Although having a love of golf is an added benefit, you don't have to be a golfer to appreciate the book.

Sally's Memory By Veronica Arnold David and Jo:When I received your book "A Long Walk With Sally", I started that afternoon reading it and could hardly put it down. Truly my heart beats with rushing sounds as I made my way through your book. At times, I would cry...well okay, many times. Losing a child could be one of the hardest things in life. We don't understand it, but God does and He does not make mistakes. Your book brought clarity to my mind that many mothers and fathers who have lost a child should get your book. I personally think it would help them with their struggles, perhaps even change their lives in a way that would glorify our Lord the way it did with the author, David Clark, Jr., who wrote this book about losing his daughter Sally, and his niece Grace, in a horrible car accident in April of 2004 due to (none other than a drunk driver). Much time and thought was given to the book and I admire David and Jo for their courage to write their life story of losing their daughter. Our hearts will forever be broken...but, God says he binds up the wounds and heals the broken-hearted, (Psalm 147:3) so with that, I have read the book and know that David and Jo have put their trust in Him along with the two ponds they build in memory of these two sweet girls and "Sallys Y", where people can go and exercise and forget their troubles of life that encamps each of us every day. Thanks for my signed copy and I will cherish it for a lifetime. I never will loan it out to anyone, because it was signed by David to me and for that alone, I appreciate it more. I give this book a 5-Star...because I went to high school with Sally's father and mother. What a special treasure that I have!!!God bless David and Jo and their two sons as they navigate through life now and for their obedience to The Lord, He will honor them with a beautiful granddaughter to love. She would never take the place of Sally...but it sure is close. I know because I have two granddaughters and are not allowed to see them. So you see, I have a broken heart too.
