Excerpt from What Became of Mr. DesmondTruth is stranger than fiction - a platitudinous remark frequently resorted to by plantitudinarians. Its triteness, and a certain smack of profundity that clings to it, endears it to such persons; just as its truthfulness - its very undeniability - prevents them from getting so much as a glimpse of its reality. The ordinary, the platitudinous mind, lacks imagination, and it may even be courage enough, to grapple with reality. Had the majority of us a sufficient supply of imagination, indeed, to grasp the true meaning of the battered and hackneyed saying so universally quoted, it is probable that the ordinary supply of courage might give out in contemplating the possibilities of Life under such a search-light.For, what is Fiction?About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. AS the year was 1922, the speech is ofthat time. Mr. Desmond is a devoted family man. He and his wifehave 6 children and there is nothing Mr. Desmond would not do tosee that his wife and children (and also a sister who resides withthem) were happy. He was also very domesticated. He could fix anyand almost everything by himself. In the parlor were a group ofpictures on the wall. His sister noticed most of them were barelyhanging there and was afraid they might fall so Mr. Desmond, ofcourse set about to remedy this problem. The following is a sentence in the book about the pictures: In some households, the falling of a picture spreads dismay. Like the breaking of a looking-glass, it is held to be a portent of disaster. Not so in the Desmondfamily, "Here is a job for the Master," and Miss Desmond, wanted toknow what her brother could have been thinking of, to leave thepicture cords so long uninspected. Mr. Desmond worked hard, whistling andhumming, in cheerful preoccupation. He decided he did not haveenough of the correct nails to fix the pictures so told hisfamily he would just step around the corner to, Tenterley's,a machine shop that would have everything he needed. He was in his overalls, already dingy and dirty from fiddlingwith the pictures. so his family patiently waits for him toreturn to finish fixing the pictures. They wait and wait andwait until it went into hours and still no sign of Mr. Desmond.they stepped around to Tenterley's where Mr. Tenterley said hehad not seen Mr. Desmond. Then they get panicy and call thepolice. I won't spoil it for the reader what happened from herebut it is truly bizarre. This is certainly a fascinating book. You will be on pins and needles waiting to find out what happenedto Mr. Desmond; something you never in a million years expected.
