The implements of the little feast had been disposed upon the lawn of an old English country-house, in what I should call the perfect middle of a splendid summer afternoon. Part of the afternoon had waned, but much of it was left, and what was left was of the finest and rarest quality. Real dusk would not arrive for many hours; but the flood of summer light had be gun to ebb, the air had grown mellow, the shadows were long upon the smooth, dense turf. They lengthened slowly, however, and the scene expressed that sense of leisure still to come which is perhaps the chief source of ones enjoyment of such a scene at such an hour. About the Author Henry James was an American author, essayist, and critic known for his contributions to both literary criticism and the realist movement, which focused on presenting everyday life as it actually was. In creating realistic portrayals of life and society, James often included elements of social and political commentary in his works, notably his depiction of the feminist movement in The Bostonians, and the exploration of culture clash between America and Europe in Daisy Miller. James s best known works also include The Portrait of a Lady, The Ambassadors, and the novella The Turn of the Screw. American by birth, James spent much of his time in England and eventually moved to London. He became a British subject just before his death in 1916.

The way James developed his characters was fascinating, and there was always the right amount of suspense. It takes a while to get in sync with his writing style (verbose and circuitous), but well worth the effort! I'm off to Volume II... and I hope there is more resolution in this one.

If you keep going you'll get to spend a lot of time with one of literature's more interesting women. She's intelligent, quick, and has impeccable integrity. Eventually, she goes up against a nicely drawn narcissist, a man who cannot tolerate someone he's close to having their own mind, a man who quietly seethes resentment but can charm birds out of the trees if he's a mind to.You'll never confuse James' style here with Hemingway's, but HJ doesn't try to see how many dependent clauses he can knot a sentence into, here, as he did, later.
