About the Author Rebecca Stone's inspiration comes from sensitive and sometimes dangerous true stories. Drawing upon her own experiences and some of the interesting and inspiring people she's had the privelige to get to know along the way. She writes without judgement as she scratches beneath the surface of seemingly violent and damaged people. Rebecca's day jobs have included wife, mother, police Detective and Business Woman; but Creative Writing was recognised as her true strength from early childhood. By Amazon Customer Dirty LuggageRebecca Stone does a fantastic job of transporting you straight back through time, you can almost feel the scratchiness of the polyester fabrics that surround the characters. The first chapter had me hooked, my mouth aghast as her exacting words conveyed the horror of the opening scenes.I really enjoyed the travel between different periods and the seamlessly way the characters from each period joined together. I was especially gripped by the themes of identity within family and how those early relationships can shape your lives. I have read many books that explore the childhood relationships with parenting, but none have been captured quite as poignantly as Rebecca Stone does. I was also gripped by the brutally honest exploration of masculinity and the struggles young men are faced with, especially when trying to outrun your own fate and stereotyping from society.Dirty Luggage is very much centred on characters, it the intricate emotions that are conveyed so exquisitely viscerally that move the story along. My heart genuinely sunk whenever the lead characters took a downturn (I don’t want to give too much away), Rebecca Stone, excels in showing you their paths and how their early experiences forever bide them to their destinies, which is truly tragic.Dirty Luggage also takes you on a unique jaunt around the world, and having been to the countries showcased, I can say that Rebecca Stone is fantastic as recreating the sights and smells in the hazy nights spent abroad. Being a true crime story, I was somewhat prepared and willing the horror to unfold, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. However heinous these acts, I still can’t help but feel an overarching empathy for Matty, I am not in any way condoning the acts, but I still can see how the events of his early life have led him to these acts. Perhaps this is a greater comment on society, with more care and love in the early years could this have been prevented? How much responsibility did that early school teacher have in this outcome? Or, was it always going to play out like this. Even as a small child, we could see through his mother’s frustration that he was hard work. Is he inherently ‘evil’? I don’t think so, but I do enjoy a book that plays out the narrative and lets you draw your own conclusions.I wholeheartedly recommend this book, though make sure you read it at a time when you don’t have many commitments as it is so hard to put down! To directly quote Matthew: “You’ll like it, he becomes a serial killer, not a cold hearted one though…”
