I actually felt I knew all the characters in the story. I traveled along with them from their hometown to Brooklyn Heights and on holiday to Ireland. I laughed, I cried and I cheered for their bravery.I had planned to read this while on vacation, but after the first couple of chapters I was hooked and couldn't put it down. I didn't want the story to end...what a great movie this would be!It is a novel, but we may all know someone who has suffered from domestic violence. Unless you lived through it, you don't know how bad it can get. Kudos to you if you had the courage to escape.

Refuge shines a light on domestic violence and abuse. We should not close our eyes to it. Refuge also shares stories of healing, surviving, the beauty, grace and resiliency of the human spirit, the hope and beauty of friendship/ sisterhood - those who understand and hold compassion and love when we may not be able to find it for ourselves. I felt like I knew these characters - they were very well-developed as were the Brownstone in Brooklyn and the countryside of Ireland. This was a well written novel. I felt very positively about the ending of the novel....it felt hopeful .

It has a little bit of everything, love ,hate ,sex ,history ,friendship .The characters are very realistic. Part of the book takes place in Ireland .The author does such a great job of describing the beauty of the country that I felt like I was there. I am hoping for a sequel so I can see what happens to the friends !!
